The traditional 9-5 office desk job is slowly being replaced, with corporations providing remote working (or working from home) options for their employees.

by CHRIS WARD Coonabarabran is a prime example of an ideal setting for employees who want to escape the rat race of the big city and take advantage of more affordable housing o pt i o n s a n d a m o r e relaxed lifestyle.

One of those work from homers is Sacha Perram, who was able to take advantage of the ability to work remotely in her G ove r n m e nt a g e n c y position.

It al lowed her to s wa p t wo - h o u r d a i l y round trips to and from work in the hustle and bustle of the city for the relaxed atmosphere and zero commute time of working from home in Coonabarabran.

While she said there were other benefits, she a d m it ted th e re we re also a number of cons associated with remote working. “ I t ca n r e a l l y f r e e u p yo u r t i m e to g et some exercise in o r other important things when you take out the commute time between work,” Ms Perram said.

“Plus, you can put your washing out during your lunch break! “ H o w e v e r, y o u ’ v e always got your wor k there in front of you, so there can be a lack of boundaries.

“You really need to have that sepa ration between life and work (when wo r k ing from home).

“And, at first, you can find yourself going to the kitchen and looking for snacks all the time.”

Ms Per ram said she was more than happy with her work situation and said she would likely struggle if forced to go back to a full-time office setting.

The major shift in working from home

came during the COV I D -19 p a n d e m i c when companies hands were forced - to maintain operations, many employees were required to work from home due to i so l ation l a w s and restrictions being placed on the public.

I t h e l p s t h a t m a ny occupations these days can be performed from just about anywhere, due to improved technology and the internet.

T h e fo rce d s h i f t to remote working seemed to be a lightbulb moment for many corporations that realised the extent of savings and benefits by allowing staff to work from home.

A research paper p u t to g et h e r by t h e Australian Government Productivity Commission revealed why working from home was here to stay.

The report outlined the cost of communicating and commuting had, in essence, s witched.

Travelling has become more expensive and the cost of communication (a t a d i s t a n c e) h a s dramatically decreased.

It goes on to explain that firms will continue to experiment with the work-from-home option until they reach a result that will typically work for them.

“Firms will initially decide on work-fromhome po l i ci es ba sed on what they perceive best meets their needs,” it read.

“The hybrid model is likely to be popular, as it balances the benefits of working from home with those of working from the office.

“Firms will observe the outcomes of their own and others’ choices, and adjust their policies in response.”

According to La Trobe University in Melbourne,

prior to the pandemic approximately 24 per cent of employees were engaged in some degree of working from home.

That figure jumped to 41 per cent during the pandemic.

Bet ween d if fe rent repo r ts, tables and surveys including from the Australian Council of Trade Unions, it was clear there were positives and negatives for both employees and employers when it came to working from home.

Coonabarabran is Leanne Colantonio, who works remotely for an insurance company and offers service and sales.

While she enjoys the ro l e, she wa r ned the sedentary lifestyle can quickly catch up with you.

“You’ve really got to take ca re of you r self physically and, in pa r ticula r, you r back care,” she said.

“When you’re sitting down in front of a computer for eight hours a day it can take a toll.

“But I like being able to blend in some domestic duties and hanging the clothes out to dry during my breaks.

“Overall it’s been a good move and a refreshing change, but I wouldn’t rule out going back to an office-type

setting for the right job.”

While Mrs Colantonio s a i d re m ote wo r k i n g wa s n’t fo r eve r yo n e, she predicted a further uptake in the movement as la rge companies co nt i n u e to s t r u g g l e to attract staff back to work.

“It can be more productive if you have the right person in the right job, but if you get the wrong person it won’t work.

“I think the younger generation will drive it more. If they can perform their job from home they w i l l wa nt to d o t h a t and force an upward change.”

Report on Coona plane crash released The Australian Transport and Safety Bureau has released a report in relation to investigations into the plane crash at Coonabarabran Airport that claimed the life of a local man last year.

On 18 April 2022, the pi lot of a C es sn a 172 aircraft had performed severa l ‘ t ouch a nd go landings’.

The pilot then per for med a low pa ss (15 -2 5 fe et ab ove t he ground) over a tractor that was being used to slash a field adjacent to the aerodrome.

During that pass the

aircraft came in contact w ith powerl i nes a nd impacted the ground at a steep angle, cartwheeling to the right and coming to rest inside the boundary fence of the aerodrome.

T he rep or t det a i led how one of the witnesses who was operating the tractor at the time saw the pla ne come i nt o contact with the with the

powerlines just behind and above the tractor.

He recalled hea r ing a “whistling and a crack” as the wires travelled over the tractor cab.

Another witness inside a nearby hanger recalled hea r i ng the a i rcra f t fly past the back of the hanger, with the engine sounding as though it was at “high power”. Not long

T h is road is a v ita l link between these two towns and offers the only route to avoid a minimum of 13km of the Golden Highway.

by CHRIS WARD For t ho s e r e s ident s still suffering flashbacks and the after effects of PTSD from the 2021 mice plague, the bad news is the numbers are on the rise again as more and more of the critters have been spotted over recent weeks.

Reports are coming in thick and fast of more sightings of the creatures throughout the Shire.

CSIRO mouse expert, Steve Henry said it has come down to a race against the clock and hoping the cooler weather sets i n sooner rather than later to put a stop to breeding.

Thankfully, impacts of the mouse-breeding season have been delayed by about two months due to wet weather.

Mr Henry said up until now the heavy rains had gone a long way in helping to keep numbers down by inundating nests and d row n ing many of the litters. But, with the rains subsiding, he is expecting to see numbers increase – at least until the weather cools off and they cease breeding.

The double-edged sword however, is that as numbers increase and the weather cools off the mice will look for shelter, resulting in more sightings.

“Now that it’s drying out a little bit we’re starting to see new recruits, when

two months ago we weren’t trapping any,” Mr Henry explained.

“But now they a r e show i n g s i g n s of reproduction, and yes, un for tunately, we a re likely to start seeing more of them.”

However, in some good news, Mr Henry said they shouldn’t reach the plague proportions of two years ago.

Mr Henry explained th at wh i le nu mber s shou ld n’t get t o the m o nu m e n t a l l e v e l o f pr ev ious ye a r s , ther e could still be enough to do damage to crops.

He urged farmers to use livestock to get rid of and limit the amount of grain laying around.

“ The key message at the moment is to manage your stubble and if you have livestock allow them to graze on the stubble to reduce the amount of grain,” he said.

“Spray out germinations and bait as the crop is sown with 50-gram baits.”

Mr Henry said using 50 -gram baits ensures every grain is a lethal dose.

“If they don’t consume a lethal dose they won’t take the bait again,” Mr Henry warned.

For urban residents Mr Henry said trapping was the best alternative, reduci ng the r isk of secondary poisoning of pets and other non-target animals.

“It’s best to use traps and make sure any holes in your home are filled in with steel wool and don’t leave food scraps or pet food out and uncovered,” he warned.

Farmers lost much of their crops thanks to the hungry critters.

by JIMMY WHALAN The coffee shop’s first customers enjoyed their morning brews with some even more delicious treats including cakes of the day – hazelnut chocolate mud cake, carrot cake and cheesecake, all served with home-made ice cream!

The gorgeous new area has been in the making for the last few months and was possible thanks to the hard work of Harald Nilsson and Tally Magee, who painted the walls of the interior and outside areas, Paddy Savage, who completed the renovations alongside Harald, and business owner, Michelle Jaggers, who selected the paint colours and décor to make the space as stylish and welcoming as it is.

The vibes the coffee area brings are unmatched; it ’s l i ke it t ra nsp or t s you to another place, yet still feels relaxing and welcom i ng l i ke you’re right at home.

Michelle has proven once again that she can turn her visions into a reality, running her beautifully decorated boutique, all the while having an equally beautiful café hiding in the back.

Michelle said that it was all thanks to the tireless work of Tally and Harald and that without them the project wouldn’t have been

possible.

The gates at the side of T he L ighthouse are now open to prov ide a disability-friendly entrance to the café area so ever yone ca n enjoy a coffee and a delicious

home-made treat.

Michelle has encouraged ever yone t o come a nd enjoy the space for their morning coffees and even for a change in scenery for meetings. “ Ever yone is more

than welcome to buy food from any of our amazing cafés and bring it here,” Michelle said.

“This is a space we have created for everyone to enjoy!”

Cattle and goat carcase weights on the rise • • •

National male cattle carcase weights were maintained at 347.7kg/head Female cattle carcase weights have improved 38.5kg/head in the last 10 years Goat carcase weights reach record highs with better management systems in place

Carcase weights for beef cattle and goats are on an upwards trajectory, according to the latest data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Here, MLA’s Market Information team takes a deep dive into the driving factors.

Adult cattle carcase weights Average cattle carcase weights have been increasing in recent years due to improvements in genetics and management systems across Australia.

According to the ABS, average carcase weights have risen by 30 per cent since June 2003 – when the average carcase weight was 245.86kg/head – to sit at 320.16kg/head nationally in Q4 2022.

Attributed in part to the higher numbers on feed, Queensland cattle were, on average, the heaviest cattle with weights 5% higher than the national average in Q4. This is unsurprising – see further details in the latest Lot feeding brief, released this month.

According to the ABS, average adult male cattle carcase weights have remained at 347.7kg/head nationally for the last four quarters. Male carcase weights in Queensland are 4% higher than the national average and in 2022 Queensland male carcase weights reached a new record of 363kg/ head, beating the previous record set in Q1 2022.

WA male carcase weights also reached a new record

of 314kg/head.

Female weights have also improved over the past 10 years, with the current average for Q4 sitting at 282.2kg/head nationally. This is a 38.5kg increase on average weights compared to Q4 2013.

The abundance of grain and feed available in the past three years has allowed these weights to lift more consistently across the board.

Goat carcase weights and production Due to the goat industry taking a more managed approach to the operation of its production system, historically elevated carcase weights supported by better genetics and increases in more consistent supply have delivered improved production volumes in 2022.

Additionally, the number of goats being processed has lifted considerably in the past two years with the improved carcase weights and slaughter numbers enabling production to increase dramatically.

According to the ABS, goat production reached 8,377 tonnes carcase weight in Q4 2022 and goat slaughter hit record levels in March 2022 with 36,610 head processed.

Studying to become a doctor was once a dream, but now a reality For local Coonabarabran pharmacist, Helen Smith, becoming a doctor was always the dream, but with a family, a move to a city to study was not possible, until she heard about the program in Dubbo.

Inspired and encouraged by local Gene ra l Practitione r s D r s Ke r r i e Stewart and Aniello Iannuzzi, Helen moved to Dubbo with the intention to study medicine.

H e l e n i s cu r re nt l y a f i r s t - ye a r student in the University of Sydney’s D octo r of Med i ci ne p rog ra m i n Dubbo.

S h e w i l l c o m p l ete t h e e n t i r e fo u r-yea r pos tg ra d uate d e g ree i n D u b b o w i t h c l i n i ca l t ra i n i n g centered on the newly redeveloped Dubbo Hospital.

As a mature student, mum, and a health professional, Helen brings a wealth of experience to her studies.

She has a keen love for learning and is looking forward to immersing herself in study and the camaraderie that goes with a small cohort of just 26 students.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support of my friends, family and the local community,” Helen said.

“I have loved how enthusiastic and encouraging my patients have been when I’ve told them I’m off to study medicine,” Helen said.

“We all know we need more rural doctors and I’m so excited that one

day I might be able to help.”

Helen is pa r t of the second cohor t of students now studying the University of Sydney’s entire fouryear Doctor of Medicine program in Dubbo.

Students in the Dubbo Stream study the same world-class medical education as their peers in Sydney, with the added benefits of living and studying in a regional location while gaining hands- on exper ience in rural and remote medical practice.

Pilliga Forest roads warning There is not enough signage to warn motorists of all the hazards on roads in the Pilliga Forest, so drivers are being advised to be vigilant.

by LIZ CUTTS An alert has been issued t o a nyone consider i ng driving through the Pilliga to exercise extreme caution on hazardous forest roads.

Authorities are racing to fix damaged roads now that rain and flooding has stopped.

M a ny of t he ac c e s s roads and fire trails are i mpa s sable a nd , w it h the bushfire risk high, clea r i ng f i re tra i ls is taking priority.

Visitors to the Pilliga are being urged to drive very carefully and keep their eyes open.

There is signage up, but the New South Wales Forestry Corporation has only been able to cover a fraction of the area so far.

Conan Rossler, cypress production and f i re manager for the Northern Cypress District of NSW Forests, said the repair bill was going to be huge.

“Three consecutive La Nina events have really hammered the roads,” Mr Rossler said. “ We ’ v e g o t q u it e a few machines out at the

moment trying to fix the roads; four graders in the past couple of weeks, but there is a lot of work to be done.

“We have put a lot of sig nage out but, quite frankly, we have not yet got to the end of it in terms of identifying what all the issues are, so there’s a whole lot of extra work to be done going forward.

“However, the biggest consideration at the moment is that we have extreme f i re-danger warnings, so we need to get all those access roads open so we can respond to fires. “ T h e r o ad s we a r e targeting for repairs are not the ones used by the public.

“Obviously, we look after the timber ha r vesting roads, but there is not a lot of activity on these at the moment.

“The other thing is that we have a lot of bee keepers in the Pilliga.

“A few month s ago, when it was really wet and the nectar flow was on, there was a lot of road usage by heavy vehicles.

However, the primary d r iver w ith us at the moment in determining our actions is the fire risk, which has kicked up a level.”

Cracks Mr Rossler said that in 2020, heavy rain right after the drought caused hundreds of deep cracks in the ground that brought timber logging to a halt.

“We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fixing it up,” Mr Rossler added.

“But I think that what has actually happened, given we have had three conse cutive L a Ni na events, is that the soil has swelled. “ We cer ta i n ly d id a lot of work back filling some of those cracks, but I think now that the soil has reached a field capacity, it’s almost back to what it should be.

“I’m sure there is still some residual damage in places, but it’s largely sor t ed itsel f out now, thank goodness.

“The big issue is that road surfaces are in very, very poor condition, and the other concern is that

when you get a lot of rain and the ground is saturated and if conditions are windy a lot of trees go over.

“Multiple roads are now closed because of fallen trees. “ We a re ask i ng the public to be very, very careful out there. People should not assume anything. “ We h ave put a lot of signage out but, as I have said, don’t assume that if there is a hazard that there will be a sign because we have just not got around to checking the hundreds of kilometres of road networks throughout the Pilliga. “ It is essential that drivers be alert at all times. “ The message to the public, who don’t normally travel those roads, is to drive to the conditions.

“You might come around the corner and find a tree across the road, so you really need to proceed with caution – because it’s potentially very, very dangerous. “ We a re ver y lucky,

we have got a very good r el at ion sh ip w ith ou r contractors, but everybody is screaming out for the sa me mach i nes t o f i x roads.

“It’s a very competitive

env i ronment at the moment i n terms of getting equipment to do this remedial work.”

Mr Rossler said that it is difficult to give an exact cost of the road repairs.

“I suspect we are well north of $200,000 already; there is very significant damage and we have a long way to go, we are not yet close to addressing the issue,” he concluded.

Users of Pilliga Forest roads should exercise care at all times.

Many roads in the Pilliga are closed due to damage from flooding.

Tooraweenah Public Small Schools’ Swimming Carnival It was smiles all round at the Sma l l S cho ol s ’ Swimming Carnival i n D ubbo last F r iday.

Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 enjoyed the cool water on what was a sweltering day.

Activities in the pool included across-the- pool novelt y races , wat er games and activities on the splash pad. It was great to see our students have a go at the different activities on the day.

With so many younger students, I was impressed b y o u r K-2 s t ud e nt s ’ fabulous behaviour and participation.

We are very thankful to parents for transporting students to this event.

the overall points score and to Stuart Town Public S c ho ol , t h at wo n t he handicap points trophy.

St Lawrence’s has had a flying start to 2023!

On Thursday, 16 February, 15 St Lawrence’s students competed at the Western Region swimming carnival in Coonamble. All students who represented the school should be very proud of their efforts.

Congratulations to those students that were successful in their events.

The next round of swimming will be the Diocesan swimming carnival on Wednesday, 8 March, to be held in Dubbo.

On Tuesday, 21 February, students from St Lawrence’s travelled to Binnaway for the Junior Judging Day. Students had a very fulfilling and educational agricultural learning experience and we thank everyone who organised such a wonderful event.

Tooraweenah Preschool February 2023 It has been very exciting to be back at preschool with our friends – both returning and new friends.

Everyone has had a great time catching up whilst getting busy with some fun preschool projects with Miss Marie and Miss Shannon; we sure have been super busy these first few weeks!

The most exciting project of all, however, is waiting for the chickens to hatch in the incubator!

We carefully placed them in their ‘cradle’ and have been watching them each day. We’ve numbered the days on our calendar to help us work out when the chickens should arrive – as some friends wanted them to hatch that afternoon.

We have seen them grow when Miss Shannon showed us how to ‘candle’ the eggs, and we have been learning more about and investigating different animals that lay and hatch from eggs.

We have also been busy working on other projects together outside in our playground. We all worked together to move sand with our wheelbarrows from the school yard to our ‘Yarning Circle’ area, making sure we tipped it on top of the weed mat and under the shade cloth shelter.

It was very exciting to open the big box with our fire pit in it: we have some wood there to put in it but have also used it for a duck pond and other imaginative play. The box was also heaps of fun for the rest of the day inside with it being a pirate ship, a Jack-In-The-Box,

a cubby, and a possum’s hidey-hole.

We’ve threaded some colourful wind chimes using recycled items such as lids and straws, adding some beads, bells and other interesting things and hanging them on small sticks. We’ve even made several more and have them tied up to a very long stick from Miss Marie’s garden, now hanging up under the shelter in the Yarning Circle, looking fabulous!

While we were working with our wheelbarrows and getting sand, we placed sand in our dry riverbed to stop the rocks wobbling too much. We’ve been doing a lot of digging as we are creating garden beds on either side of our wooden walkway bridge.

Our next project is to fill our new hanging baskets and making another new garden to beautify our entrance with plants and fun garden hangers and ornaments.

On recent hot days we have enjoyed blowing bubbles and playing in the water trough. We’ve placed some ice in the water that has colour in it, so as it’s melted the colour has merged with the water. This has fascinated our friends as they can see their hands ‘change colour’ as they immerse them in the water. It’s also been fun pouring and measuring with our scoops and small containers as part of our play.

Inside, our friends have been busy building with the ‘magna-tiles’ and using them to build houses and shelters for the farm animals and sheds for the farm vehicles. We’ve had a very busy café on site that takes lots of take-away orders, and we have loved playdough, painting and creating at the busy table.

It sure is great to be back at Tooraweenah Preschool!

Coonabarabran Public A s t he s c ho ol ye a r gets into full swing and everyone buckles down to learning, we have resumed ou r s t a g e a s s em bl ie s and fortnightly awards.

A ll parents and carers are welcome to attend assembly, which is held on the even weeks on Friday afternoons – K-2 at 1.40pm and Year 3-6 at 2.20pm At the K-2 assembly we had many proud recipients of academic awards who were celebrated for their achievements including g reat writing and wonderful mathematics.

We always begin with the Acknowledgement of Country song which we all sing along enthusiastically to. There is then a solum moment at the recitation of the School Pledge, which ends with a promise of many hands making a house and many hearts making a school.

The awards were then presented to the following recipients: Sportsperson awards: Eva Ford, Aurora McKernan, Hunter R omans and Dusty Pearson.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Values awards: Naomi Green, Kolt Mitchell and Annabelle Milligan.

The Stars of the Week were plentiful and shining examples of the hard work and enjoyment seen in i nd iv idua l classro oms and presented to Tommy Dicks, L ouis R ouse, Marnisha Gall, Emma Hayman and Khaleessi Polock.

Always the highlight of the assembly is the announcement of the Class Star – this week won by Kindergarten and proudly collected by Jetta Birtles.

We waved our representative swimmers off to compete at North West. Well done to Hudson Jenner, Lyla McKernan and Olive Moppit and best of luck.

Binnaway Junior Sheep Judging was held recently and many students from CPS attended the actionpacked day which involved animal husbandry and first aid.

Olive Moppit and Sophie Leedham penned therr reflections of the day, as follows: “ W he n we a r r i v e d , we all grouped up and

found our meeting place where we ate recess and lunch. We hear that some of the judges could not make it, along with the poultry and the working dogs. Therefore, the day turned into an information day. We all went off to

our different groups and rotated around the variety of st at ion s . E ver yone enjoyed the fabulous day.

BARADINE LIBRARY NEWS Baradine Librar y celebrated the annual NSW Seniors Festival with a week of free events and activities.

Older residents took the opportunity to come together, share a laugh and tap into community services information.

Library Lovers Day was celebrated on Tuesday, 14 F e b r u a r y, w it h a n invitation to call in and have a blind date with a mystery book. A number of borrowers joined in the fun choosing either a brown paper wrapped fiction or large print book and be in the running to win a box of chocolates.

Sen i o r s Tech Sav v y sessions have started in the library and are held every Tuesday between 2.30 and 4.30pm. These are face-to-face training sessions with a variety of topics covered from smar tphones, social

media and computers to ema i l and sha r i ng p h oto g ra p h s . At t h e conclusion of each session, time is taken to help with any specific questions or technology issues. The sessions are free and offer beginner, intermediate and advanced assistance.

With technology advanci ng at such a ra p i d rate, it ca n be a challenge for some older adults to keep up and these sessions are a great opportunity to get connected at your own comfortable pace.

Celebrate reading at a Baradine Library event on Friday, 10 March, when published author, Tina Pech reads poems from her book ‘Heart Weavings’. The event is free and includes afternoon tea.

On Tuesday, 21 March, come along to the library and celebrate Harmony Week when local resident, Julie Mash gives a fascinating insight into her life in the Philippines a n d a ta s te of so m e traditional food. This is a free event that will take place between 2.30 and

WEATHER WATCH As the month of February draws to a close, Perth will still record its third -driest summer in 148 years, with a rainfall of only 1.4mms, just behind 0.2mms in 200910 and 0.8mms in 1974-75.

Roma, in southern inland Queensland, will also record its seconddriest summer since 1870; the driest summer being 36.4mms in 2018-19.

By contrast, places in far north of Qld recorded above average rainfall during February including 604mms at Kowanyama,

not far away from Cooktown which did record over 450mms.

The absence of notably high maximum temperatures continued through February. The highest temperature in Coonabarabran this month was only 36.5 degrees and has not reached 37 degrees since early December of 2020. This is the longest spell without 37 degrees or more since March 1916 to November 1918.

The very cold first half of February in Victoria and the Riverina, which was the equal coldest since the first half of February of 1872, will impact upon our regions by providing an autumn season that will be warmer by day and drier than usual until the first significant rain arrives at the end of May or early June – and from then on until February of 2024 rainfall will be above average most months.

Cricketers make Ladies golf news major semi-final

On Wednesday, 22 February, the lady golfers completed their summer stableford competitions.

Coonabarabran’s cricket team is to set to contest the major semi-final next weekend after defeating Curban convincingly at Coona’s No 3 Oval last Saturday, 25 February.

In beautiful conditions for cricket, Curban won the toss and elected to bat.

Curban started slowly but solidly and advanced to 27 before losing their first wicket. That started a steady flow of wickets a nd t he side f i n i she d all out in the 34th over for 95.

Main contributors with bat were Nigel Allan (22), Stewart Younghusband (18), Jack Chandler (17 not out) and Tom Kelly (12).

Kerrie Ward had a great score of 38 points, winning a club voucher.

The next best score was 35 from Julie Shinton.

Julie won a ball for her efforts.

Balls also went to Lou Dowsett, Cis Bruce and Lou Coulton.

O n S a t u r d ay, 2 5 February, the ladies held their Opening Day of their official program. The event was a 4BBB stableford with a draw for partners after play.

It was lovely to have two beginner golfers join us and play their first 18 holes.

Tracey played particularly well, having 43 points.

Kerrie Ward was able to repeat her performance from Wednesday having 38 points.

Obviously, everyone was keen to be drawn out with either one of these players.

The first cards were drawn out being Tracey and Kerrie, giving them a total of 81 points.

The rest of the players knew they had no chance and Tracey and Kerrie were declared the winners.

Binnaway Young Judges attract record numbers Approximately 215 students from across the Warrumbungle region took part in the 2023 Binnaway Young Judges Day learning about livestock, produce, farm safety and careers in agriculture at the Binnaway Showgrounds on Tuesday, 21 February.

Jointly coordinated by the Binnaway Centra l S cho ol a nd B i n n away S h o w S o c i e t y, t h e i n i t i at i v e h a s g r o w n over the last six years, Binnaway Show Society t r easu r er Ji m L a rk i n said. “ Each yea r we have more and more students wanting to be part of this positive, hands-on day,” Mr Larkin said. “ T he d ay i s r u n by the community for the community and wouldn’t be possible w ithout t he help a nd s upp or t of presenters, schools, v olu nt e er s , s p on s or s , t ho s e who l o a n t hei r livestock and of course the students.

“Given it’s an annual event we like to keep it fresh and new each year with different stations for the children to hear from.”

about agronomy, goats, emergency ser v ices, fat scor i ng cattle a nd shearing and fleeces said Binnaway Central School teacher, Simone Wilson. “ Days l i ke these broaden the horizons of our students as well as allowing them to learn outside of the classroom,” Ms Wilson said.

“We aim to stay true to the Young Judges’ roots o f j ud g i n g l i v e s t o c k , however, this year the judging component wasn’t possible due to presenters being unavailable last minute. “ We wer e for t u n at e t h at ot her pr e s ent er s were still able to give the students a fantastic day of learning about everything to do with agriculture and the many careers possible across the industry.”

Spotlight on bank closures North West communities that have lost their bank are in the spotlight as part of a recently established Senate inquiry into regional bank closures.

Chair of the committee, Senator Matthew Canavan was joined in Moree by Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton as part of a national tour he is conducting to speak with communities that are being impacted by bank closures across regional Australia.

The inquiry was established following 92 bank branches across the country being closed or slated for closure since September, and the committee called on all banks to halt branch closures until the completion of the inquiry as a sign of good faith.

“We’ve seen a reprieve for some communities that were faced with losing their banks, but Moree is one that will still sadly be closing,” Mr Canavan said.

“We need to be finding solutions that enable the ongoing ability for these communities to access banking services without the undue need to travel multiple hours, especially when businesses and community groups need to have access to bank cash.

“All four of the big banks have signed up to support the referendum on The Voice but we’re seeing them close branches in communities with a high proportion of Indigenous people. If they really wanted to make sure they were having a positive impact they would be working with these communities to en-

sure they don’t lose an essential service, and that’s what we’re wanting to achieve with this inquiry.”

Mr Coulton has urged banks to focus on finding solutions rather

than pulling the plug on regional branches.

He is supporting the appeal of the Senate Committee to halt further closures until councils, businesses and affected customers

can submit their concerns to the inquiry.

“Banking is not just about commerce in regional communities but provides an essential service to the most vulnerable in the

community,” Mr Coulton said.

“The closure of branches in Wee Waa, Gunnedah, Gilgandra and now Moree has put undue strain on these communities.

Funding boost for FlatTrack MOREE Moree’s innovative and successful youth work organisation FlatTrack has a received a huge boost, securing a $251,120 state government to help construct a designated learning environment for local youth, aged between 12 and 24.

The funding boost was announced by Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall last week.

Mr Marshall said four separate buildings would be constructed to accommodate the expanded youth education and training FlatTrack programs, as well as a new lunchroom and a separate toilet block.

“This is a huge funding win for FlatTrack which does great work with Moree’s schools, police and court to help get youth back on track,” Mr Marshall said.

“Krist Grasnick and his team

give so much to the community and it’s about time they got a little bit back in the form of financial support to expand what they can offer.

“FlatTrack is critical to keeping a number of local young people out of the criminal justice system and into work and having productive lives in the community.”

Founder and program manager of FlatTrack Youth Works, Mr Grasnick said they were really looking forward to getting the project up and running and being able to provide great facilities for their participants.

“We have kids excited about learning, excited about living, excited about giving back and it’s our responsibility to do everything we can to help them become who they want to be,” he said.

“The idea for a learning centre came about from some of our kids who struggle with literacy and

numeracy and can’t cope in the formal education setting.

“To have a designated classroom and facilities block gives us the ability to offer our young people the chance to complete an education via distance education or undertake further studies and training.

“It will allow us to have our various programs running at one time. We can be running our life skills program in the shed, while having students getting an education in the new building, another group loading up for our work experience crew and another couple of kids can be grabbing something to eat in the lunchroom.

“This project will benefit an infinite amount of people. We know from experience that if we can change one kid’s life and get them over their mountains and back on the flat track, that it echoes.”

“The closure of Westpac and ANZ in Moree is particularly disappointing given the high proportion of Aboriginal people who live here,” Mr Coulton said.

“If these banks were serious about fulfilling the aims of their Reconciliation Action Plans they would not be withdrawing their services from places like Moree.

“These decisions will disadvantage the elderly, people with disability and Aboriginal people who require access to in-person banking because they lack digital literacy or have no means to access the appropriate technologies required for online or telephone banking.

“This may lead to more people being vulnerable to online banking scams; and I am equally concerned about the personal safety of people who may feel forced to take out and carry around larger amounts of cash.”

Mr Coulton said the importance of face-to-face banking for the most vulnerable members of the community cannot be underestimated.

“While I am pleased that Westpac has halted closures in other areas, I find the closure of its Moree branch to be especially short-sighted,” he said.

“Moree is an agricultural powerhouse at the intersection of major infrastructure projects like the

“So what this signals to other regional centres is that banks do not believe in the future of inland Australia. Their actions speak louder than words.

“While closures are typically a commercial decision, as a general principle, banks should also look at the services they provide to country towns as part of their social licence, and take into account loyalty shown by customers over many decades.

“The Moree Westpac branch opened in 1876, and there are families in Moree who have been customers since its beginning almost 150 years ago; if that’s not loyalty I don’t know what is.”

Bank branch closures across the North West have also drawn criticism from state MPs, civic leaders and local business chambers.

Submissions to the Senate inquiry close on March 31 and can be made by any member of the public.

The inquiry is expected to report back to the Senate by December 1.

Hunter New England Health to start search for new chief The Hunter New England Local Health District will start the search for a new chief executive following the resignation of Michael DiRienzo.

Mr DiRienzo will remain on leave until vacating the position on March 9.

Tracey McCosker PSM will continue to act as chief executive until a recruitment process has been completed.

Ms McCosker, the former chief executive of NSW Health Pathology, has worked in the state’s

public health system for almost 30 years.

Hunter New England Local Health District released a brief statement following the resignation, confirming Mr DiRienzo’s departure and the interim measures in place until a permanent appointment is made.

“We wish to acknowledge and thank Michael for his years of contribution and achievement as chief executive of the district,” a spokesperson said.

Inland Rail once in a generation opportunity for Moree: Mayor MOREE Moree Plains Shire Council mayor Mark Johnson has featured in a new video from Inland Rail to help promote the benefits that the Brisbane to Melbourne freight rail line will bring to rural and regional communities like Moree along the alignment.

Moree is part of the Narrabri to North Star (N2NS) section of the Inland Rail program, helping the council secure $194 million investment from the NSW government to fund the first stage of design and construction of the Moree Special Activation Precinct.

A SAP is a dedicated area in a regional location identified by

the NSW government to become a thriving business hub, helping to create jobs, attract businesses and investors and drive economic growth through simplified planning approval processes.

“The Special Activation Precinct opportunity probably wouldn’t have presented itself to our shire without the Inland Rail,” Cr Johnson said in the video.

“The SAP is a once in a generation opportunity for this town.

We’ve had 10 to 15 years of declining population and for the first time the state government is projecting that we will actually have a population increase.

“The SAP is going to be a wonderful opportunity for this town

over the next 40 years. The state government is projecting our population will increase by up to 4000 people and that gives our town scale in terms of housing and infrastructure, education, health, all of those things that flow off population that Moree hasn’t had for a long, long time.”

In addition to the significant benefits that the SAP will bring to Moree, Cr Johnson also said that the arrival of Inland Rail will deliver huge gains for local farmers by lowering their cost of taking goods to market.

“We’re an agriculturally based community, we produce about a billion dollars of agricultural product in any one year, but not much

Helicopter assists in alleged Moree stolen vehicle arrest Police news A 14-year-old boy was charged with a number of offences after an incident in Moree.

About 3:10pm on Monday, February 20, a Red Honda 520 quadbike was stolen from an address on Jones Avenue.

Police were notified and, with the assistance of a member of the public using a helicopter, began to track the motor vehicle's location.

The driver was seen at various times driving dangerously on various streets in Moree, including on the footpath and on nature strips where he narrowly avoided collisions with other motor vehicles and pedestrians.

About 3:50pm, the quad-bike was tracked into a lane-way near Adelaide Street.

Police from the Moree Highway Patrol and New England Police District converged onto the area and arrested the boy without further incident.

The Moree boy was already

on conditional bail for a number of offences relating to other stolen motor vehicles in the town.

He was charged with entering enclosed lands (trespass), take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, never licensed person drive on road, use unregistered motor vehicle, drive in a manner dangerous to the public and breach of bail.

The boy was initially refused bail and appeared at Moree Children's Court on February 21.

“So to be able to put that in containers on a train that’s 1.8 kilometres long, heading north and south will create great cost efficiencies for our farmers.”

Moree beef and grain farmer Oscar Pearce said like most farmers, they sell to nearly every country around the world but transport in Australia is extremely expensive.

Mr Pearce said they are competing in a global market so they need to be price competitive.

“Inland Rail’s extra capacity and reduced freight costs will mean that our businesses are going to be able to export when we need to and meet buyer demand better,” he said.

“We will be looking to expand our operation as the market dictates so that if new markets open up that we can get products from the farm gate to the buyers in a cheap and effective manner.

Captivating Japanese drumming performance in Gunnedah on Thursday A captivating performance of Japanese drumming ‘taiko’ is coming to Gunnedah this Thursday, March 2.

The touring taiko drumming group called Taikoz, formed in 1997 and is continuing to give Australia an expressive and intercultural experience.

Its performance is described as ‘thunderous taiko meets soulful flute, sonorous handpan, dynamic movement - enveloped in a colourful light sculpture’.

This will be the first time the group has performed in Gunnedah and with it brings the rare opportunity to watch a group that has toured around the world.

Ian Cleworth, Kerryn Joyce, Sophia Ang, Ryuji Hamada and Claudia Wherry are the creative ensemble and composers behind Taikoz.

Composers have been largely influenced by effects of COVID-19 and their pieces reflect a story from darkness to growth and new life.

The night features Karlin Love’s Fierce: The Vengeance Of Joy, a winning composition of Taikoz’s 2020 Women Composers Competition.

The group prides itself on pieces from both taiko and non-taiko composers to create a unique experience.

Taikoz’ performance titled ‘Side by Side’ will be performed at The Civic on Thursday March 2, 2023, at 6:30pm.
