Warrumbungle mural to return home A stunning mural of the Warrumbungle Mountains once displayed at the Miniland Museum will soon be making a return to Coonabarabran – to be displayed at another of our local treasures.

by JIMMY WHALAN & KAYLA HARRIS The giant 3.5 by 2-metre tall ar t wor k painted by Margaret Hadfield, took pr ide of place in the Miniland museum in the 80s, but was later given away following the closure of the theme park in 1999.

M s Hadf iel d sa id she had lovingly restored the painting herself after it had been eaten by white ants and covered with bird

excrement over the years.

She had used the artwork as a backdrop for her art studio in Canberra, but made the decision to sell the piece with hopes of the artwork making its way back to its r ightful home in Coonabarabran.

After a Facebook post c reated conve r sat i on amongst the community, many suggestions were made for local businesses to p u rch a s e t h e m u ra l i ncl udi ng Sidi ng Sp r i ng

Obser vator y, the Visitor Information Centre, and the Warrumbungle Visitor Centre.

The masterpiece w a s u l t i m a t e l y p u rch a s e d by a n ot h e r o f C o o n a b a ra b ra n’s loca l t reasu res, Cr ysta l Kingdom.

M s Hadf iel d sa id she was thrilled that the piece was purchased by Crystal Kingdom owners, Ken and Debbie Newton.

“Congratulations to the

Newton family! I know the Zo rg d ra g e r, H e a d a n d Bredereck families of the past will be ver y happy with this ar rangement,” Mrs Hadfield said.

“This is a significant art piece that featured in the Australasian Post in 1987.”

Crystal Kingdom owners Debbie and Ken Newton and daughter Angela said it felt like it was destiny that they we re able to bring such a historic piece back to Coonabarabran –

like the final piece of the Cr ystal Kingdom puz zle t h e y d i d n’ t k n o w w a s missing. “ I t ’s g re at to b r i n g a piece of Miniland back home and we think the mural will rea l l y com p l ement ou r collection and help bring it all together,” Ms Newton said.

Kitty celebrates 100 years of priceless moments It was a celebration of the century – for a century – as Cooinda Coonabarabran provided a local resident with a heart-warming birthday morning tea.

by GEORGIA SPENCE This week Cooinda celebrated 10 0 years of Cather ine (Kitt y) Hall in, sur rounding her with balloons, friends, family and Turkish delights.

Mrs Hall reflected on her century and expressed her gratitude towards her life and the people who contributed to it.

Or iginally from England, Mrs Hallin and her family wanted more opportunity after serving and surviving World War II. Experiencing WWII meant Mrs Hallin had to send her son off to war, while she remained and worked on a farm with other woman under the Women’s Land Army. They were known as Land Girls and replaced male farm workers who had gone to war.

She enjoyed the work and jokingly said she wished she had married a farmer, however, Australia had more to offer her children and she was loved by her husband, a coal man at the time.

D u r i n g t h e wa r, Au s t ra l i a wa s a d ve r t i s e d throughout England as a good place for families to move.

Once settled in Australia Mrs Hallin worked in a hostel and eventually trained as a nurse.

She said moving was one of the best decisions she could have made.

“It was so smoggy in England from the bombing, I couldn’t see in front of me - I once went straight into a brick wall and broke my two front teeth because of the smog,” Mrs Hallin said.

“If you feel you want to move, don’t think too much about it. If it is an improvement, don’t hesitate.”

Mrs Hallin’s secret to longevity was to “eat right and don’t over indulge”.

“I also treated people how I would like to be treated. We are all in this together,” she said.

Throughout her life Mrs Hallin saw a lot of change.

She witnessed the birth and death of the Queen, noticed many changes in food and its accessibility, and many societal changes, specifically with male and female roles.

Currently residing in Cooinda, Mrs Hallin has made many friends who gathered to celebrate with her.

“This is the first time in my life I have had anything like this. I am happy I live here!”

Optus update Following a multitude of reports regarding poor Optus mobile service, the Coonabarabran Times went back to Optus for more answers.

by JIMMY WHALAN A nswer ing these inquires, Optus ack nowledged recent i ssues w ith net work coverage that resulted in an outage that lasted the length of the day on Tuesday, 3 October.

Optus Territory general manager Northern NSW, Chris Simon said the issue that caused this outage had since been rectified, with service resuming as usual.

However, as any local Optus customers would know, it’s not such a simple fix.

Upon receiving this response from Optus, a further inquiry was m ade r e g a r d i n g t he frequent outages that occur almost every day, with some lasting just a few minutes, and others lasting hours.

‘Starry Nights’ claims Star Art Competition The clear night sky of Coonabarabran inspired the creation of this year’s winner of the SPACE gallery’s Star Art Competition.

This year’s theme was ‘mono ch rome’, wh ich gallery manager Katie Noonan described as, “any colour within the tones of that colour, from black to white.”

Naom i Taylor wa s awarded the first-place cash pr ize for th is competition with her beautiful artwork on the starry night sky, with black as her essential colour.

“I did it because I enjoy painting and wanted to do something for myself,” Naomi said. “ I haven’t done something that large before, so I was just really surprised to win.”

Throughout the process of creating her artwork, Naomi received guidance from Katie and previously participated in a six-week ‘Introduction to Acrylics’ course run by the SPACE Gallery. “ K atie gave me some tips and hints on different types of brushes

and techniques to try to get the look I was going for,” she said.

“I didn’t even know to put gesso on it, so the course helped a lot, especially with the f u nd a ment a ls of painting.”

A s a ch i ld , Naom i loved arts and crafts and did a lot of drawing and sketching.

“Painting was someth i ng I st opped doing since I left school and then sort of picked back up after having kids and more free time,” she said.

“I find it to be relaxing, it’s sort of like my ‘me’ time.”

Naomi was born and raised in Coonabarabran.

A fter attending university at Newcastle she then moved to Sydney. Recently, she moved back to her home town with her family.

She stated that what inspired her most when creating her artwork was Coonabarabran’s beautiful night sky.

“My husband started work i ng up at the observatory and I went to have a look at all the

different photos on the walls up there, it sort of inspired me.

“Here you can actually see the stars in the sky at night, which is so different compared to Sydney.”

One piece of advice Naomi received from Katie that assisted her when starting out was t o “ move away f r om perfectionism”.

“I think the advice I’d offer those who want to

give painting a go is to just get a canvas and give it a go,” Naomi said.

“It might not always look exactly how you want it to the first time – but that’s okay.”

What Miniland means to me Ever wondered what it’s like to call Miniland your home? Well, that’s exactly what Miniland has been for me for the last 16 years – home.

by KAYLA HARRIS T h i s ye a r m a r k s 51 ye a r s s i n ce M i n i l a n d was officially opened to the public by Peter Zo rg d ra g e r a n d 21 years since my parents purchased Miniland to raise their children and to be closer to family.

Miniland is my childhood home, one tied with an extensive history that will live on through the memories of those who used to visit it when it was open.

After the Wambelong bushfire in 2013, almost everything at Miniland was dest royed. Ou r fa m i l y t h e n d e c i d e d to get rid of, or rebuild what remained.

The memorable ‘ B r o n t e t h e b rontosaur us’ was given to McEvoys Earthmoving after they helped my family clean up after the fire.

T h a n k f u l l y, t h e m u s e u m w a s salvaged, giving us the opportunity to build our home.

We live in a museum that thousands of peo p l e h ave wa l ked through – a little

confronting when you think about it.

I remember when I w a s a r o u n d s eve n , my parents asked me where I wanted my b e d ro o m to b e, s o I ran around the museum assuming they wanted me to pick one of the old exhibits which t h ey’d r e i nve nt a s a bedroom.

I chose an exhibit with a gorgeous background, not understanding that the background was going to be taken away and n ot b e a p a r t of my bedroom.

Ve r y l i t t l e o f t h e theme park was salvaged, but the things that were still remain at Miniland today.

The electr ic cars rally track is where we now t i e ou r dog s up, and the giant bird cages have been used fo r va r ious an i ma l s including chickens and pigeons. However, one is extremely overgrown with bamboo and is probably f illed with snakes!

The water sl ide and pool are what most people see when they

drive by our property.

We sti l l use ou r waterslide ever y s u m m e r. W h e n my b rother and I were younge r, we we re so excited that we had our ve r y ow n wate r s l i d e!

Now it has become a normal part of our lives.

Many fond memories have been created due to our waterslide, some good and some not-so-good ones.

Wh i l e t h e a d d i t i o n of a waterslide to bi r thdays, Ch r i stmas, N ew Ye a r’s E ve, a n d Aust ral ia Day pa r ties was incredible, it has a l so been th e ca use of va r i ous i n j u r i es – bruises, fibreglass burns and even a concussion.

With its famous histor y, our home still at t ra ct s p e o p l e w h o l i ke to d r i ve b y a n d stop at our front gates to take photos of what Miniland now looks like.

T h a n k f u l l y, my d a d d e c i d e d to p u t u p a m a s s i ve fe n ce, ot h e r w i s e w e w o u l d have too many unwanted visitors!

I w a s n’t y et b o r n when Miniland was a theme pa r k, but my

parents were and they have fond memories of it, much like many of my friends’ parents as I’ve been told countless times.

Miniland is a private property and my ch i l d h ood h o m e. It’s the place my brother and I grew up in, and the place where I took my first steps.

It’s the place where I s ta ye d u p a l l n i g ht to catch Santa Claus, the place where I was fo rced to have my picture taken on my first day of high school, and the place where my first relationship ended.

It’s our home – where w e’ v e h a d m a s s i v e bonfires, where we stayed up al l night playing murder in the dark with friends, and where my brother discovered his passion for motorbikes.

It will be the place where I will say goodbye to my parents when I move away from home.

Miniland has been my home th roughout my childhood and for t h at, I a m ex t re m e l y grateful.

Fatal accident near Gowang A man has died following a single vehicle accident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Just before 1.30am on Saturday, 28 October, emergency services were called to the Newell Highway at Gowang – about 30km south-west of Coonabarabran – following reports a Jeep SUV had crashed into a wall.

sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.

He has not been formally identified, but is believed to be aged in his 70s.

Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District established a crime scene, and investigations are underway into

the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Weekly cattle and sheep market wrap • The heavy steer indicator lifted by 4¢.

• Lamb and sheep prices generally eased.

• Lamb yardings lifted by 73,888 to 237,969 head.

Cattle The cattle market was varied this week, as prices diverged based on category and location.

In general, prices in Victoria and NSW held firm or improved, while prices in Queensland, South Australia and WA eased.

Cattle yardings fell by 3,753 to 43,490 head.

Numbers at several larger sales in NSW and Queensland were well below week-ago levels, while some fortnightly sales did not run.

Heavy steer prices lifted by 4¢ to end the week at 205¢/kg live weight (lwt), off the back of reasonably active

processor bidding and improved condition from last week.

By contrast, the feeder steer indicator eased by 2¢ to end the week at 204¢/kg lwt. Prices lifted by 4¢ in NSW but fell by 8¢ in Queensland, as dry conditions in Queensland continue to impact buyer demand and feeder steer condition, while central and southern NSW have been less affected as those regions have seen some rainfall, albeit sporadic.

Sheep and lambs The sheep market generally eased this week, with larger yardings and mixed animal conditions contributing to price

declines.

Total yardings lifted by 82,095 to 309,714 head. Most of this came from a 73,888 increase in lamb yardings to 237,969 head and made this week the largest week for lamb yardings so far this year.

The restocker lamb indicator eased 34¢ over the week to end at 327¢/kg carcase weight (cwt). A large yarding at Naracoorte made up the largest contribution to the indicator, and restocker lamb prices rose 41¢ compared to the previous sale a fortnight ago, but the trend was negative in NSW and Victorian saleyards. In Wagga, a 35% increase in

restocker lamb numbers was matched with a 124¢ fall in price to 336¢/ kg cwt, with varying conditions affecting bidding.

The exception to general price easing was the heavy lamb indicator, which held steady at 507¢/kg cwt. A general trend has been evident in the market over the past several months in favour of heavier, wellconditioned lambs over lighter lambs or lambs lacking finish. This trend was again evident this week, with several NLRS market reports noting the preference for finish and condition, especially among export buyers.

Slaughter Numbers continued to rise this week, with cattle slaughter reaching 132,421 head, the highest figure this year and the largest weekly slaughter figure since May 2020.

Increases were seen in every state except South Australia, where numbers dipped 728 to 3,342 head.

Combined lamb and sheep slaughter fell by 10,371 to 575,779 head.

This was due to a 28,338 decline in lamb slaughter to 422,261 head, while sheep slaughter lifted by 18,017 to 153,518 head.

All aboard the Gravy Train Live music is returning to the Coonabarabran Golf Club, with newly-formed local band “Gravy Train” making its debut performance.

Zoe Holcombe, Golf Club licensee said, “the Golfie is the most familyfriendly place in Coona.”

I n s pi r e d by g r a nt money given to the club in 2022 for a golf event, the Golf Club team decided it would be better to run an event that would give the club more exposure.

“After nearly giving the money back as we were short on staff, Kevin

Sharp came to the rescue to help run this event,” Ms Holcombe said.

“We thought, instead of running an actual gol f event , we c ou ld g ive bigger exposu re by including the whole community by doing free social golf, hiring a golf simulator, hiring a live band and providing free food.”

The addition of a golf si mu lat or w i l l a l low people to experience golf virtually, and attract the younger generation.

“The aim was to use the grant money to support local businesses, bring the community together, r ebu i ld c om mu n it y cohesion and create a new event the whole

community can enjoy,” Ms Holcombe said.

At the event, a courtesy bus will be running from 2pm to 7pm.

Gravy Train was more than happy to perform at the event.

“We wanted to support local talent and we are hoping to get another local band for the next one,” Ms Holcombe said. “ The event is proudly funded by the NSW Government – Community Events Program. “ We a re hopi ng t o do another two events after this one, before 30 January.

“The club is all about exposure and getting people in the doors at the

moment.”

The Coonabarabran Golf Club hopes to attract new membersh ips by hosting these community events. “ T h i ng s a r e h a r d , the government keeps raising alcohol prices, electricity is through the roof and insurance is a killer – also our club is out of town, so we generally have to think outside the box a lot to attract people to the club,” Ms Holcombe said.

“It’s only $11 for new membership and $10 to renew. It helps the club operate.

“Come see me on the day if you would like to join up!”

Police take action to tackle Shire-wide crime Continuing cases of private home and business break-and-enter and farm thefts has Warrumbungle residents expressing concern over what they see as a lack of action by police.

Soon after, a 41-yearold man was arrested at Coonabarabran Police St at ion a nd cha rged w ith nine of fences including acquire pistol subject to f irearm pr oh ibit ion order, three counts of supply prohibited drugs and deal with proceeds of crime.

Earlier this month, t he C ou nt r y M ayor s Association (CM A) of NSW announced it has joined forces with the Police Association of NSW and NSW Farmers to call for a Parliamentary Inquiry i nt o c r i me , l aw a nd order in r u ra l and regional NSW. CM A chairman, mayor Jamie Chaffey said statistics showed residents of r u ra l, r eg ion a l a nd r emot e NSW were more likely to be sexually assaulted.

They are also more likely to have their cars stolen, more likely to have their homes broken into, and more likely to be impacted by domestic violence.

A nd when these crimes did occur, the p ol ic e r e s p on s e wa s delayed due to resources available.

Survey “For the first time, our CMA annual survey has revealed that crime, law and order is now in the top five emerging issues for NSW local governments,” mayor Chaffey said. “ We k new c r i me wa s i n c r e a s i n g , but we looked to the NSW Bureau of Cr ime Statistics and Research ( B OC S A R) data t o clarify the situation.

We put this down to the fact that we consistently demand more action be taken. That’s not to say that we don’t have issues and I remind residents of the impor ta nce of reporting any criminal activity, no matter what it is.”

Coonabarabran Fire and Rescue was tasked to a car fire at North Street, Coonabarabran at around 3pm on Thursday, 26 October.

Arriving on scene, the crew found multiple vehicles and caravans on fire and requested back-up support from Fire and Rescue and assistance from NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).

A shift in wind resulted in the fire spreading to nearby scrubland at the rear of the property, which quickly became out of control.

After two hours, the blaze was brought under control due to efforts from Fire and Rescue and RFS. Local residents have also been thanked for helping to prevent spot fires on property fencelines.

Two vehicles and three caravans were destroyed in the fire.

CHOCOLATE STARFISH Chocolate Starfish band members have guaranteed they will immerse the Bungle Rumble crowd into a state of pure rock-and-roll glory...be ready to move like you haven’t since the 90s!

by GEORGIA SPENCE A community united through music can do powerful things. It can create a moment in time where one may release their worries, jump out of their seats and dance with one another.

If there is one band who can freeze time and guarantee a stellar performance, it is embodied in the embracers of rock-androll – Chocolate Starfish.

H e a d l i n i n g Coonabarabran’s Bungle Rumble concert on 25 November, the stage will be set for the band to preview its 30th anniversary tour.

They will be performing Starfish hits along with album covers from INXS, Queen and Meat Loaf.

Lead singer, Adam Thompson said over the last 30 years, the band has played thousands of shows around Australia.

“Coonabarabran may be one of the last towns we are yet to perform in – but we assure you it will be memorable!”

Chocolate Starfish blasted onto the Australian music scene in the 1990s with their cover of Carly Simon’s, ‘You’re so Vain’.

The band has kept up with the times through their honest demeanour and punchy shows, which Mr Thompson notes “is entertaining as hell.”

“I think Chocolate Starfish is a bit of an anomaly,” he said.

“We have a stage presence that is very inclusive of the crowd.

You get a lot of heritage acts of our generation where everyone sits back on chairs and watches them at festivals.

“It is not like that with us – you will be smack bang in the middle of the show. I will be smack bang in the middle of you. In some of the songs I will come out and probably sit on your knee, I’ll probably get you standing up and singing along with me.

“It is very interactive, but it is also you can never predict what is going to happen.”

The band is looking forward to exploring the natural sights of Coonabarabran and surrounds, and Mr Thompson hopes to connect to local Gamilaroi people.

Mr Thompson runs a program called Backtrack, working with Aboriginal communities to listen and share support. He said it is important for communities to come together and he believes Bungle Rumble will help open up the opportunity for that community connection to occur.

“Our band will make the audience feel like they are apart of a powerful, community event,” he said.

“The music is the catalyst to the relationships and the togetherness you experience at a Chocolate Starfish concert.”

Throughout the years, the band has seen a lot of change. They were popular during a time where social media was non existent and shaving your head into a ponytail, while wearing grandma’s

fur coat was original.

The energy at a Chocolate Starfish concert appears to remain memorable, whether one saw them perform recently or back in the nineties.

Mr Thompson said their success is inspired and influenced through each other.

Having had to confront many challenges over the years, including losing ba nd me m b e r Zo r a n Romic, who passed in 2012, Chocolate Starfish has continued to grow and evolve.

Mr Thompson said the ability to be vulnerable amongst each other and their audience creates a relatable atmosphere.

“We can work together and push things out and move forward with strength. That is a testament to who we are,” he said.

Coming up to 30 years of being together through the high and lows, Mr Thompson reflected on one of his favourite memories.

He remembers performing at a bar in Los Angeles and deciding

to open up the front doors to the gig.

“I jumped out in the middle of Melrose Drive and stopped traffic with my mic and started singing ‘You’re So Vain’.

I got people out of their cars, dancing,” he said.

“And this was playing in a country that would have arrested us in the next five minutes. That is the sort of stuff we are renowned for”.

Chocolate Starfish is set to be a highlight of the Bungle Rumble.

“I am going to create some magic out there, but I can’t create it if you aren’t physically there,” Mr Thompson said.

“It will be one the concerts of your life – and that is my iron-clad guarantee.”

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public Students in K- 4 travelled to Dubbo for a theatre performance of the well-loved children’s book ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox, presented by Monkey Baa Productions.

Students and staff greatly enjoyed the entertaining performance, music and clever use of props which brought this story to life.

Students also enjoyed a Possum Magic themed treat of lamingtons and pavlova in the morning before they boarded the bus to Dubbo!

Tooraweenah Show The Tooraweenah Show is always a highlight of our local community calendar and the 107th annua l show d id not d isappoi nt. Students were very successful in various sections of the show pavilion including f ine a r ts, hand icra ft

and fresh produce. With plenty to see and do, all who attended the Tooraweenah Show had an enjoyable day.

We were pleased to showcase our school in the pavilion with photos, art and bookwork proudly on display.

Tooraweenah Preschool Back for term four and lots of busy friends at preschool! We welcome our new preschool friends and their families to our “Tooraweenah Preschool family”. Everyone has settled into preschool happily and with c on f idence, wh ich i s fabulous to see.

We l o v e d g e t t i n g r eady for the r e c ent Tooraweenah Show that was held on Saturday, 21 October. Everyone made lots of amazing artworks for our pavilion display, including easel painting, drawings, colourful golf ball printing and lots of photos of our friends enjoying preschool.

Thank you to everyone involved for such a fun day and a really great show.

Preschool friends also enjoyed icing biscuits and decorating eggs for

show entries. Everyone loved icing the biscuits and decorating them, and we made sure that each day we iced one for the show and one for us to enjoy for afternoon tea. As one friend said, “We are good cooks at preschool!”

We a r e lo ok i n g forward to our “Beach to Bush” session w ith To oraweena h Public School friends a nd lea r n i ng about staying safe when we are swimming at the beach. This is a great safety program and so important as we move into the summer months and holiday time.

F r iend s have been enjoying playing outside in the lovely weather with lots of dramatic play in and around the ‘fruit shop’, with friends enjoying fruit smoothies at the table while they r o ck t hei r babie s i n the pram. Sometimes friends have to ‘go to work’ so leave the babies

with the teachers ‘to babysit’.

Our farm has again been a very popular and busy play space inside, with friends doing stock work , bu i ld i ng mor e yards and stables with the ‘magna-tiles’ for the horses, and loading stock into our various wooden trucks and B-Doubles.

There also been a lot o f m a i nt en a n c e a nd checking of the farm machinery and getting ready for harvest.

The café has also been quite busy with lots of take away orders being phoned in and some have even been delivered!

A nd in between all of that fun, we’ve been problem solving, investigating, creating and discovering some amazing things w ith puzzles, games, craft experiences, and small world play, along with si ng i ng a nd da nci ng with the piano and the CD.

Ella Atkinson showcased her talent in the Meat Judg ing Competition, where she visited the JBS Meat Processing Plant and judged Retail Cut and Primal Identification, Beef Carcass Judging, and Beef Primal Judging Classes.

Coonabarabran High School is proud of its students who displayed a positive attitude, hard work , a nd t ea mwork a t t h e s h o w. T h e y represented the school with excellence.

A charitable cause in bloom Coonabarabran VIEW Club hosted a blooming charity event in Coonabarabran last weekend, taking a peek into local backyards to admire several stunning gardens.

by GEORGIA SPENCE The ‘Garden Tour’ fund-raiser was held on Sunday, 29 October, following its successful inaugural event in 2022.

An estimated 100 people attended the local tour, as individuals travelled from across NSW to help raise money for The Smith Family charity.

Funds raised will support disadvantaged children, keeping them at school and in comfortable, clean clothes.

The event consisted of

five hosts opening their gardens to the public, with a morning tea provided by VIEW. VIEW Club was created by The Smith Family charity, empowering women to have a voice on societal issues and create change within their own communities.

VIEW stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women. There are over 300 VIEW Clubs across Australia and members’ efforts support more than 1680 disadvantaged children.

In Coonabarabran, the local branch has been running for over 30 years and encourages social connection, with members meeting once a month.

Carolyn Fretwell, president of the Coonabarabran branch, said she enjoys the sense of fellowship with likeminded people.

“Mr Smith believed every woman should have one night out where she didn’t have to cook a meal, so our View Club revolves around having a meeting with an evening

meal,” Mrs Fretwell said.

“For me, I live under the policy of ‘I am blessed to be blessing’.

“If it can help someone as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain.”

The club meets monthly and aims to establish lasting friendships.

Each year the club hosts two fund-raisers which allow the group to have a positive impact on children’s lives, gaining relatable connections under the framework The Smith Family charity.

A swing and a hit for Westpac Rescue golf day On Saturday, 28 October, the annual charity golf day for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service was held at the Coonabarabran Golf Club – marking the 20th anniversary of the event!

A great turn out of 17 teams participated, helping raise approximately $4200 for such an important service to our tow and district in times of emergency.

Chairperson of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Coonabarabran Support Group, Amanda Sutherla nd extended her thanks to the many volunteers that help keep the rescue helicopter operating.

“Our wonderful volunteers do an amazing job and work tirelessly th r ough the yea r t o raise vital funds for the chopper,” Mrs Sutherland said.

“A big thank you to all – and now you can have the next couple of months off!”

Nearest to the pin was won by Wally Tighe and the long putt was won by Bill Wilkin.

The final round of the John Walker Memorial Trophy was played and won by Bill Brown with a net 61. Second was Mick Noy with a net 65, and third was Bill Wilkin with a net 71.

Some revised rules of golf A ball hitting a tree sh a l l b e de eme d not to have hit said tree.

Hitting a tree is just bad luck and has no place in a scientific game. The player should estimate the distance the ball would have travelled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there.

There shall be no such

thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course somewhere and eventually will be found and pocketed by some one else. It has thus become a stolen b a l l a n d t h e pl ay e r should not compound the crime by charging himself with a penalty stroke.

I f a putt passes over the hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity holds that any object attempting to maintain a position in the atmosphere without something to support it must drop. The law of gravity supersedes the law of golf.

The same thing goes for a ball that stops at the brink of the hole and hangs there defying gravity. You cannot defy the law.

A putt that stops so close to the cup that it inspires comments like “you could blow it in” may be blown in – but on ly i f it is no more than eight centimetres from the hole. After all, no one wants to make a travesty of the game.

Pony clubbers in the medals at Zone Jamboree Four local young riders were draped in sashes and trophies following a strong performance at Jamborree.

On Monday, 2 October, Ziara and Savannah Swansen, Hazel Bartlett and Benjamin Birrell, representing Coonabarabran Pony Club, travelled to Wee Waa fo r th e a n n ua l Zo n e 5 Jamboree competition.

At the Jamboree, riders from across 14 clubs came together to compete across a range of disciplines over two days, including flat riding, dressage, showjumping and sporting.

Af te r set t i n g u p ca m p, getting the horses settled and prepared, the riders were keen for an early start on the Tuesday and ready for competition.

Tu e s d a y wa s t h e b i g g e s t day of competition, with riders completing thei r flat r iding, d res sage and show j umpi ng events.

Coonabarabran riders performed exceptionally well in the dressage, with all of them placing in the top three riders for their age groups.

In the flat riding they faced toug h com petiti on, but s ti l l managed to come away w i t h s eve r a l p l a c i n g s a n d demonstrated amazing skills and sportsmanship.

Ziara and Ben then finished the day with showjumping. Both had a high number of riders to compete against and came

away thrilled with their results and performance.

It was anothe r ea r ly sta r t on the Wednesday to f inish the competition with sporting.

There were six events run on the day, focusing on some very challenging skills; the aim, of course, to get the fastest time.

The Coona participants rode fast, producing more amazing results across the board.

At the final awards, p resentat i o n s w we re m a d e on foot instead of on horses, d u e to a s to r m m ov i n g i n , with the Coonabarabran pony clubbers justly recognised for their efforts.

Ben B i r re l l recei ved the highest point scoring boy in his age group of nine and under 11, with the girls not to far behind in their own point scores.

Then, in a complete surprise, they were announced winners of the Rex Wate r house Memorial Shield for small clubs.

This award is given to the four r i d e r s f ro m t h e s a m e c l u b, producing the highest point sco re fo r a team. Togethe r, the Coonabarabran team of four riders stood out from the rest. Not only did they achieve amazing results, together they were the ultimate team to take out the prizes!

Fiona Simson praised for leading national federation Liverpool Plains farmer Fiona Simson has handed over the reins as president of the National Farmers Federation after leading the organisation since 2016.

Ms Simson, the first female president of the national body, has been an industry leader at a state and national level since 2008.

Among her achievements after completing two terms in the top role, Ms Simson will be particularly remembered for the launch of the first Diversity in Ag Leadership Programme as well as continued lobbying efforts across many issues including trade bans and biosecurity threats.

Addressing the National Press Club at the end of her tenure, Ms Simson said it was the organisation’s members who had granted her the incredible opportunity to lead the NFF. “It’s their collective wisdom and expertise that has determined every position we have ever taken during my time at the NFF,” she said.

Ms Simson, who was joined by her husband Ed for last week’s Press Club talk, also heaped praise on her children Tom and Jemima.

“This job certainly takes its pound of flesh and there is no way I could’ve done the endless travel, the phone calls, the media interviews, the Zoom meetings and the frank feedback, and the ability to step away from the farm and home so often,

Funds for continued childcare in Mungindi Mungindi families will reap the benefits of having continued childcare services after Moree Plains Shire Council secured $900,000 through the Community Child Care Fund for the establishment of the Mungindi Community Child Care Education Hub. Minister for Early Childhood Education, Dr Anne Aly last week announced the outcome of the grant recipients for Centre Based Child Care services, providing $600,000 for establishment and sustainability support and $300,000 for capital support over the next two years.

The fund is a federal government investment of more than $16 million to help establish new early childhood education

services in regional communities that currently have limited or no services operating in their area.

Dr Aly said the new services would help ensure Australian children don’t miss out on the critical benefits of early childhood education and care.

“We know the first five years shape a child’s life, with quality early childhood education and care setting children up to succeed at school, in higher education and throughout their lives,” said Dr Aly. “These exciting new services will also give local families the ability to choose when it comes to increasing hours for work or returning to work or education.

“This investment means more

local jobs and more locals able to join the workforce in regional and remote areas.”

Moree Plains Shire mayor Mark Johnson said he is excited for the community of Mungindi.

“This outcome brings peace of mind for families who will now have continuing access to quality care and early education, enabling families to remain active in employment,” Cr Johnson said.

“The hub will bring added benefits of providing employment for approximately four to eight employees, which is significant in a small town”.

Currently, preschool facilities for three year olds are located on the Queensland side of Mungindi. Following changes to

the present Queensland funding model, three year olds are no longer funded for preschool, which will result in the facility having to close its doors at the end of 2023.

Through this grant funding, council is now able to provide for the community of Mungindi equal and accessible access to education and social interaction through a long day care facility for children 0-5 years of age, along with out-of-school hours care and vocational care available to all children.

In a statement released last week, council said advocacy for this high quality of care and education was strongly supported by the federal Member for

Parkes Mark Coulton, state Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall, the NSW Cross Border Commissioner James McTavish, Mungindi Central School, Balonne Shire Council, Mungindi Progress Association and St Joseph’s School, Mungindi.

Balonne Shire Council and Moree Plains Shire Council will continue to work together to advocate for additional funding, strengthening and growing the cross-border relationship.

The hub will be owned and operated by current approved provider, Moree Plains Shire Council. The location of the Mungindi Community Child Care Education Hub is still being investigated.

Watch out! Trains about between Moree and North Star The Moree to North Star rail line is back in service after two and a half years and people are urged to take extra care near the rail line and at level crossings.

Work on the northern section of the Narrabri to North Star Phase 1 (N2NS P1) Inland Rail project alignment has finished and the line will be operational from October 27, 2023.

This means trains can run again between Moree and North Star.

The track has been inactive since March 1, 2021 when construction on the line started for the Inland Rail project.

The section between Narrabri and Moree was returned to service in November last year and this year Inland Rail construction contractors Trans4m Rail have been putting the finishing touches on the section between North Camurra and North Star, in the lead up to operations resuming

on October 27.

As part of Inland Rail’s commitment to improving rail corridor safety, they have upgraded 57 public and private level crossings and road approaches along the N2NS P1 alignment.

Between Moree and North Star alone, six locations have been upgraded to active crossings, meaning they will now have boom barriers, bells and flashing lights instead of just stop or give way

signs. These include: County Boundary Road, Milguy Croppa Creek Road, Crooble Buckie Road, Croppa Creek Croppa Moree Road, Croppa Creek Croppa Creek Road, North Star I B Bore Road, North Star Inland Rail has also delivered a brand new dedicated active pedestrian crossing at Buckie Road in Croppa Creek.

All crossings now have bigger and brighter signage (see image), upgraded road approaches and new rubber crossing panels, which reduce the time it takes for a vehicle to traverse the level crossing.

But just because level crossing safety has been improved, local

communities cannot get complacent about driving across the track.

Locals and visitors travelling near the rail line and using level crossings are urged to take extra care, especially north of Moree.

Grain trains and other rail vehicles can run at any time.

Inland Rail utilises a consistent safety-based approach for determining public level crossing treatments.

This includes a national system called the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model (ALCAM) which considers factors including road and rail traffic numbers (based on 2040 estimates), vehicle types, speeds, and sighting distances.

Connecting city and country is something Ms Simson had dedicated much time to over her advocacy career. Ms Simson said she has strived to bridge the gap between farmers and consumers so that both can understand the challenges and opportunities each face.

“It’s so easy to curry favour in some parts of the bush, by further wedging the city-country divide by talking about us and them. Talking about the latte sippers and how they don’t care or don’t understand.

“That sort of talk in my view is not leadership. It also ignores the fact that you can get a bloody good latte in Werris Creek or Gunnedah.

“The us and the them rhetoric pushes us farmers further from the people that we ultimately serve.

The people who eat our food and use our fibre.”

Ms Simson said this builds on the damaging misconception that what farmers do isn’t valued in the community.

who have relegated that sort of talk to the past.”

Incoming NFF president David Jochinke thanked Ms Simson for her leadership.

“Fiona leaves an incredible legacy that will resonate for years to come,” Mr Jochinke said.

“She’s left nothing on the table, and her considered, collaborative and engaging leadership has left farmers everywhere in a far stronger position.

“I thank her for the partnership we’ve had during our time together at the NFF and wish her, Ed and their family all the best for their next chapter.”

One of Mr Jochinke’s first official duties as NFF president was to address last week’s NFF conference.

Female leadership was also in the spotlight through the Diversity

in Agriculture Leadership Program graduation.

Farmers, agricultural leaders and 35 program partners from across Australia saw 12 extraordinary women from a cross-section of professional and personal experience take their leadership journey to the next level. The graduation, coinciding with the NFF’s National Conference, showcased the growth in female leadership in agriculture and celebrated the partners’ commitment to equality.

It also heralded the announcement of the program’s inaugural Patron, Ms Simson, who founded

the initiative in 2018 after seeing the dire lack of women around agriculture’s boardroom tables and in management positions.

Ms Simson will advise the program on future and strategic direction and also be an advocate for inclusion and diversity in agriculture.

“I feel so honoured to continue this very important work,” she said. “As the program has grown, it’s important to look at ways to ensure we’re truly including and embracing not only gender diversity, but diversity in all its forms.”

Helicopter service heroes Life-saving role of rescue helicopter in the spotlight

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service will respond to almost 400 missions from its Tamworth base in a year.

While these services are ready to be deployed to all parts of northern NSW when needed, most of these missions will be to communities in the New England and North West, including Narrabri.

For Narrabri resident Sarah Ford, she is one of those almost 400 people in a year who can thank the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service for being there in a critical time of need.

When Mrs Ford suddenly became ill in July this year, little did she know the helicopter crew would be deployed to transport her to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

Suffering what she thought was severe back pain, Mrs Ford presented to the Narrabri Hospital with a heart attack and would later go into cardiac arrest.

It was a terrifying ordeal for Mrs Ford and her family, however, the care from Narrabri Hospital, the rescue helicopter and John Hunter Hospital was exemplary.

Mrs Ford reflected on her experience at a gathering of ‘Rescue Club’ members at a meet the team event held at the service’s Tamworth base.

People who owe their lives to the work of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service are part of a unique group of people in the region known as the ‘Rescue Club’.

“The emergency department and the doctor at Narrabri Hospital were amazing,” Mrs Ford said.

Her praise is equally as glowing for the helicopter crew who did everything they could to put her family at ease.

For Mrs Ford, it was the helicopter crew’s reassuring approach to her son, Jobe, that meant the world.

“It was very distressing,” she said.

“The helicopter crew showed Jobe the helicopter and things like the ear muffs.

“They were fantastic to him. To be so reassuring to Jobe was a huge things for us.”

The service’s family friendly nature aside, it was their onboard medical expertise and ability to quickly connect her with critical health care that was the difference between life and death.

While no one in her immediate family had required the use of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service previously, community advocacy through its Narrabri support group meant Mrs Ford was well aware of the service and its important role in the North West.

are in safe hands,” she said of being transported by the service.

The experience has also made Mrs Ford a strong advocate for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

“I want to do more to raise money and awareness for the rescue helicopter,” she said.

“Living in the country, we are so lucky to have a service like this.”

The weekend’s Rescue Club gathering in Tamworth was also an opportunity for former patients to meet the crew who are ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For Mrs Ford, she was able to meet the helicopter pilot who helped transport her safely to Newcastle to ensure she would receive specialist care.

Little did Mrs Ford know at the time that she was in the safe care of Trent Owen, a training and checking air crew officer with 23 years’ service with the rescue helicopter.

Mr Owen said the Rescue Club gatherings, which are also held at other bases including Belmont and Lismore, gave patients closure after being transported for medical care.

Mr Owen said patients often

come into the care of the service unconscious and remember little, or nothing, of their time in the helicopter.

“It’s a service you wish you never have to use. But when you need it, you’re glad it’s there,” he said.

With decades of experience flying on missions across the North West, Mr Owen is all too familiar with landing at the Narrabri Hospital helipad to ensure patients can receive care in their critical time of need.

Being able to meet these patients after being in the care of the service is a rewarding experience, he said.

“It’s also great for them to meet the staff behind the service in a relaxed manner.”

Working from the Tamworth base, Mr Owen was inspired to work with the rescue helicopter because it combined his desire to give back to the community with his love of aviation.

“Watching my father serve in Fire and Rescue NSW instilled the value of helping your community in a time of need, and honestly I was torn between applying for a position with Fire and Rescue NSW, or following my passion for aviation,” Mr Owen said when he marked his 20th anniversary with the service.

During his tenure, Mr Owen took a position with the Westpac Life Saver operation in Sydney to diversify his experience, but he always came back to Tamworth to cover shifts where necessary.

Looking back on his achievements, which include being named Australian Hel-

icopter Aircrew Member of the Year’ by the Australian Helicopter Industry Association in 2018, Mr Owen said he never could have dreamed of the career he has had as a 20-year-old.

His role as training and checking air crew officer now sees him apply the skills he has learnt over two decades and share his passion for aviation safety with others.

Being able to pass on his experience, help train staff on the new generation aircraft and apply skills learnt over the last two decades to help Northern NSW in their time of need is an absolute honour, he said.

“I am so proud that we have a world class service to provide for regional NSW,” Mr Owen said.

Zucchini, Basil & Parmesan Frittata Preparation 15 min | Cooking 50 min | Serves 4 NOTE: Serve this delicious frittata with a mixed salad for a light meal!

INGREDIENTS 1 tbs olive oil + extra for greasing 500g zucchinis, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, crushed 10 free range eggs, at room temperature 1⁄2 cup cream 1⁄2 cup freshly-grated parmesan cheese 1⁄4 cup basil leaves, finely chopped Extra basil leaves, to serve STEP 1 Lightly oil a 6-cup (about 6cm deep) baking dish. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Heat oil

in a frying pan over medium heat. Add zucchini and garlic and cook, stirring often, for 4-5 minutes until slightly tender. Set aside to slightly cool.

STEP 2 Whisk eggs and cream in a large bowl. Stir in cheese and basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Stir in cooled zucchini mixture. Pour mixture into prepared dish. Bake for 45–50 minutes until just set in the centre. Sprinkle with basil leaves and serve hot or cold.

Good for you ... Zucchini Flowers Zucchini are a source of vitamin C. This vitamin is important for healthy gums and also helps the body fight infections. Dark green varieties contribute some beta carotene, an antioxidant pigment which the body can convert to vitamin A.
