First sod turned on National Park Road upgrade Major works to seal National Park Road officially commenced on Tuesday, 16 July, with a special visit from NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison MP and Mr Roy Butler MP for the official sod turn.

National Park Road is a crucial regional route pr ov id i ng essentia l access to the north of the Gi lgand ra sh i re.

L o c at e d i n a m aj o r grain producing area, it also supports multiple school bus routes and serves as an alternative route for visitors to the Warrumbungle National Park.

National Park Road upgrades will see the sealing of 12.5 kilometres of u nsea led se ctions of the road, enhancing its resilience against future weather events and improving travel conditions. Works will also include formation w idening w ith the

addition of pavement and seal.

The total cost of this project is $4,878,344, with the NSW Government providing $3 mi l lion th rough the Fixing Local R oad s P r og ra m , the Australian Government contributing $878,444 through the L ocal Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and $999,900 in funds from Gilgandra Shire Council.

M inister A itchison said the National Park R oad upg rade w i l l deliver improved safety for motorists and reduced travel times. “ I ’m so pleased t o

visit Gilgandra to see the sta r t of work on this important upgrade, wh ich w i l l g reatly i mpr ove lo c a l t ravel and transport links,” Minister Aitchison said. “ T he NSW L abor Government is proud t o be i nvesti ng i n regional road upgrades l i ke th is that help improve access to education, employment, economic and tourism opportunities.”

Member for Barwon, Mr Roy Butler MP, said upgrading the unsealed roads is very important for his constituents. “ With the NSW Government funding, we expect to see many

more kilometres of sealed roads to be constructed i n t he ne a r f ut u r e .

R eliable, all-weather roads mean that councils spend less ti me a nd money grading unsealed roads, and producers and the general public have safer, more dependable transport routes.”

Gilgandra Shire Council mayor, Cr Doug Batten said the sealing of unsealed sections of National Park Road will provide opportunities

for regional development and tourism, as well a s s upp o r t i n g l o c a l rural families through regional connectivity and sustainability of the road network,” Cr Batten said. “ National Park R o ad pr ov ide s v it a l access to Curban, A rmatree, Gilgandra and Gulargambone silos.

This project is essential in supporting the local agricultural industry in g rain distribution by providing a safe and

reliable route.

“Families in the Curban and Tooraweenah area along t h i s r o ad w i l l h ave improved access to health and education facilities through reduced travel times and all-weather access, leading to greater livability for this region.

“At present. motorists have no alternate routes to these centres when the road is closed due to inclement weather.”

network allow small rural communities to grow and thrive, in a time where grasping employment and alternative business opportunities is key.”

Minister Aitchison and Mr Butler later travelled to Coonabarabran, where they met with Warrumbungle Shire C ou n c i l m ayor, C r Ambrose Doolan, general manager Roger Bailey and other Council directors and staff.

Lions support worthy cause On Thursday, 4 July, the Binnaway Lions Club presented a cheque to the Warrumbungle Domestic Violence Committee to support the creation of essential packs for individuals escaping domestic violence situations.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY The Wa r r umbung le Domestic Violence Committee is made up of ser vices and members of the community who work together to bring awareness of domestic violence to the Shire.

The g roup is the fo rce behi nd many activities a n d i n ce nt i ve s s u c h a s programs to local schools, White Ribbon events, raising funds to purchase domestic violence awareness flags flown in the streets across the Shire’s towns, and creating all-round awareness.

The donation was made at a Lions Club dinner meeting on 3 July, before being presented to War r umbungle Domestic Violence Committee the following day.

“The donation will support ou r essential’s pack s fo r women, men and children fleeing a domestic violence s i t u a t i o n ,” s a i d M i s s i o n Australia suppor t worker, Vicki Barnes.

“These packs will have essentials such as toiletries, a n d i te m s fo r c h i l d r e n , a s peop l e f l eei ng these situations often leave in a hurry and do not have the means to take items with them.

“We would like to thank the Binnaway Lions Club for their generous donation to our cause.”

Industrial area needs street appeal Coonabarabran’s industrial area on the northern side of town is flourishing with local businesses and government institutions alike, and is essential in supporting many families and farmers in their livelihoods. However, when it comes to street appeal, some think more can be done.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Against a t ypical palette of steel, concrete and bitumen greys are heavy diesel mechanics, earth-moving businesses, local builders, a nursery/ petshop, stock feeder, s to ra g e s h ed s, m eta l fabrication and government institutions.

Amongst them is the highly established Prugger Family Group, which owns the nursery/ pet shop/coffee shop, landscaping, eight of the school buses, and the main Prugger workshop/ office, with around 30 employees across the board.

A n t h o n y P r u g g e r ’s parents were the force behind much of this, and he retains a strong sense of pride for a legacy he is carrying on, but feels that the industrial area is lacking in an aesthetic street presence.

He admits to driving a round such a reas in other towns, and these travels have instilled an invaluable mindset in the focused business owner.

“The way that a b us i nes s i s p resented can be a reflection of the way owners carry out their day-to-day business – usually when you see quality, it’s reflected,” Mr Prugger said.

However, when you enter the industrial sector of many regional or rural areas, the same cannot always be applied.

Mr Prugger suspects t h at i t’s re l ate d to l a n d va l u a t i o n , b u t, regardless, hopes to see other businesses follow suit with his family, by

a s ses s i ng thei r s t reet presence factors such as lawns and driveways, emphasising it means a lot to prospective clients dr iving past, or those w ho want to use the services.

Council responsibility?

Warrumbungle Shire Council owns the land from the concrete gutter to the fence lines and, as such, the responsibility of keeping the lawns mowed and presentable falls within its jurisdiction.

While many businesses in the industrial area opt to mow their own nature strip, Mr Prugger said the type of grass is rough and difficult to mow.

He would l ike to

see the cur rent g rass in the industrial sector replaced by a variety that i s m o re d roug ht tolerant and, in doing so, improve street presence.

Mr Prugger said it would be a huge u n d e r ta k i n g to s t r i p back the old grass and replace it, made harder by red tape involved in traffic management for such a task, but was looking to discuss options and seek assitance from Council on how to move forward.

Mr Prugger reflected on the effectiveness of a recent letter distributed out by Council encouraging land owners to improve street

appeal. He considers t h i s a s o l i d s te p p i n g s to n e fo r Co u n c i l to replace the grass with ongoing maintenance of new grass falling on interested businesses.

Communicating the next step An imp roved street presence in the industrial area would not only be of benefit for the town an the locals. Prospective businesses have looked at establishing themselves in the area, however, have failed to follow through.

In the spirit of re co g n i s i n g p o s s i b l e areas of improvement for the industrial sector, Mr Prugger believes it’s not

only a lack of “uniform street presence” that has hindered the introduction of new people and businesses, but an unreliable NBN connection that resulted in local businesses taking matters into their own hands.

The NBN cuts off just before the 50-kilometre sign leading into Coo n a ba ra b ra n a nd while mobile signal was offered, it wasn’t reliable enough for industrial area businesses, particularly in the sheds.

F o l l ow i n g t h i s , t h e NBN company installed satellite dishes, which lasted only a few days before ultimately failing.

For the Prugger G r o u p, t h e s a t e l l i t e d i s h e s o f fe r e d w e r e never going to last, due to the steep price they w e r e c h a r g e d fo r a non-unlimited ser vice, which had to be spread between CCTV cameras a n d d a ta w i t h i n t h e buses and trucks.

From this, they and many other establishments in the a rea tu r ned to Starlink, however, they sti ll exper ience some connectivity issues. In an e ra whe re many businesses are online, this is a huge barrier.

Moving for ward, M r P r u g g e r b e l i eve s landscaping should

be the f i rst step in mak ing the industr ial area more attractive to prospective businesses and clients, with strong communication required bet ween involved businesses and Council.

Rectifying the connectivit y issues where possible should fo l l ow, e n a b l i n g businesses to operate smoothly.

It seems a huge task, but Anthony Pr ugge r knows it can be done and said with the proper time, organisation and funding, will undoubtedly prove a wor thwhile venture in the long run.

Car Club turns 30

Fifteen members were present by the second meeting, and with that the ‘C oonaba rabra n District Restorers Club’ was formed, with fees being $20-$30.

B y t he e nd o f t he g r oup s f i r s t ye a r i n March 1995, the club had amassed 20 members, with 15 cars registered between them.

T o d a y , t h e organisation is known as the Coonabarabran Automobile Restorers Society (CARS).

“CA RS is a social club wher e memb er s can enjoy sharing their passion and mingling at various venues each month with the benefit of ver y i nexpensive registration and insurance costs for their

restored vehicles,” said Geoff Patrick, secretary/ treasurer.

In celebration of the club’s 3 0 th yea r, it s annual general meeting

was conducted at the Binnaway Showground, where 10 of the original

members were granted the honou r of a L i fe Membership.

Skate Park reopens The Coonabarabran Skate Park is once again welcoming skaters and visitors after a recent incident of vandalism left the park temporarily closed.

“The damage, which included g raff iti and i r r epa r able h a r m t o the park’s shade sail, occur red earlier this week, was extremely disheartening for ou r c om mu n it y,” s a id Wa r r u m bu n g l e Shire Council mayor, counci l lor A mbrose Doolan.

“However, following thorough clean-up ef for t s by de d ic at e d Council staff, the damaged shade sail has been safely removed, and the skate park has u ndergone ex t en sive maintenance to ensure it meets safety standards.

“A s a r e s u l t , t h e park has reopened just in time for the school holiday period, much t o the rel ief of lo ca l r e s ident s a nd s k at e

enthusiasts.”

Acknowledg ing the skate park’s significance as a recreational hub for the youth, Cr Doolan encouraged continued community vigilance. “ We urge residents to report any information related to the vandalism incident to the authorities. It’s essential that we all work together to protect and maintain our public facilities,” he added.

Singing priest shares message of hope An internationally-acclaimed author, singer, songwriter, public speaker and youth worker has taken students on his amazing journey from drug addict to a passionate priest.

An ordained Catholic priest currently serving Melbour ne, F r Galea moved to Australia from Malta, his home country.

He is the founder and executive director of IC ON M i n istr y, a charity organisation that ministers to millions each yea r across the world.

“I talk to large crowds, sometimes 1.5 million at a time, but my greatest joy is when I come to towns like this to talk to young people about my love for God and to help them reach their full potential as human beings,” he said. “ Ver y often we a re blinded by the business of life, we are hampered by the insecurities that we c a r r y. I work t o encourage young people to find their hope and their dignity.

“Music is part of what I do. I am evangelist, I am a communicator a n d I u s e mu s i c t o communicate to young people. Music is the language of the heart so it transcends and I am grateful that I get t o use th is means of communication.”

K now n t o m i l l ions a s ‘ Father R ob f r om Austra l ia’, ma ny a re not aware of how far removed his world is today from his life as a troubled teenager on the island of Malta. Knowing that he needed help, he forged a relationship with Jesus Christ and said he has never looked back. His message to youth is about recovery, redemption and faith.

“I was a drug addict unti l I was about 16 years old; I lived on the streets,” he added.

“I get to share a little bit of that story with young people from the aspect of dignity and hope and I a lso ta l k about theolog y a nd philosophy according to the age level of the audience.

“I believe people long for human connection.

At the end of the day, phones are great tools, but it is when we become slaves to them that we start to lose our sense o f pu r p o s e , e v e n o f joy. I give my story; I show video and I give testimony.

“I have been getting a g r e at sen se of joy f r om t he s t udent s I have talked to today and there was a lot of engagement. My work is

usually with secondary kids, I have not worked with primary before so I have welcomed the opportunity to do this here. They all seemed very engaged and ready to listen and understand the message I am trying to give.

“Ultimately, I am a priest. I get to stand on big stages, yes, but at the end of the day I want to serve people, I want to love people, so whether it’s in a small town or in a large stadium, people are there to love and it is wonderful that I get to relate to people in this way. “ It is wonder ful to watch the kids interact, I work in thousands of schools and the kids are so much calmer and so much more present in this town, you have a lot to be grateful for.”

NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE LONG-SERVICE MEDAL PRESENTATION

Dedication and commitment recognised at RFS presentation Local NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers were honoured at a ceremony in Coonabarabran at the beginning of July, with the presentation of medals in recognition of their service.

Held at the Coonabarabran Fire Control Centre, RFS Assistant Commissioner Jayson M c Ke l l a r A F S M j o i n e d s p e c i a l g u e s t s , including Stephen Lawrence, Government Duty MLC for the Barwon electorate, for the presentation of 42 Long Service Medals and the official handover of five new firefighting vehicles to local brigades.

“With years of service ranging from 10 to 72 years, many of these volunteers have dedicated a significant por tion of their life to protecting others, including Arnold McWilliams, who joined the RFS in 1951,” Assistant Commissioner McKellar said.

“A r n o l d h a s been a co m m it ted a n d respected member of the Turrawan and Belar Creek Brigades.

“He is a worthy recipient of the 70-years

Long Service Medal and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Clasps.”

Also honoured for 60 years Long Service were the late Andrew Mackay, of the Belar Creek Brigade, Robert Shannon, from the Goor ianawa Valley B r igade, and Peter Munns, from the Baradine Brigade.

“T h e i r p rofes s i o n a l i s m h a s n ot g o n e unnoticed and while they don’t do the work for praise, this week’s events provide us with an oppor tunity to acknowledge their commitment,” Assistant Commissioner McKellar said.

Robert Shannon was proud to receive his fifth Clasp for 65 years of service as member of Goorianawa Valley and Goolhi Rural Fire Brigades.

Mr Shannon officially joined the RFS in 1958

commencing service with Goolhi Rural Fire Brigade.

He then joined Goorianawa Rural Fire Brigade in 1996, when he moved to the valley, and quickly became a very active member, holding the position of deputy captain from 1995-2013.

While Mr Shannon said, “I have done my time as an active member,” when a fire started on his property last bushfire season, he was the first person on the back of the truck. His fellow firefighters said he just can’t help himself!

“The RFS is committed to ensur ing its members have access to modern firefighting tech no l ogy w hen p repa r i ng fo r and responding to fires and other incidents,” he said.

“Many RFS members go above and beyond for their brigades and local community, and it is fitting to recognise the dedication they all show.

“I also acknowledge those who support volunteers in what they do – the family, fr iends, employers and colleagues. We know it takes their ongoing support and patience to assist and enable our volunteers to do what they do to save lives and protect property.”

VIEW CLUB NEWS Last month, Coonabarabran VIEW Club celebrated its 28th birthday, with the Coonabarabran Gospel Choir entertaining members with beautiful renditions of favourite songs.

It was great they could join us for our birthday fund-raising meal, which was provided by all members, who then still

paid for this meal!

I liked June’s saying on the program which was ‘a birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun’.

This month we were privileged to have a young woman from the National Parks speak about her passion and work to protect the few Rock Wallabies that are

in the park. May Whittall showed interesting slides of the work being done to fence an area and eradicate feral prey from that area, so that the Rock Wallabies can be moved there and hopefully breed in this safe place.

Garden Club plans are well underway, with Lindy Swanson and Sue Stephenson leading the

way.

Members have also committed to shifts on the Driver Reviver roster for the school holidays VIEW members were very proud to contribute to the Smith Family’s Winter Appeal to help those less fortunate keep warm during these cold months.

Parent, student, teacher conferences on Monday and T uesday a f ter noon prov ided an oppor tun ity for students and parents to discuss their child's learning streng ths a nd goa ls for f utu re planning.

all at the carnival.

Mr Sean Brannan has been visiting our region with Sydney students

for about 10 years. We love the association and always look forward to the visits.

and sta ff had the privilege of a full day concert and workshop with Fr Rob Galea and

his band.

Coonabarabran Public Spelling Bee 2024 Imagine the pressure of standing in front of your peers to spell out random words read to you from a selected list of dictionary vocabulary… that is what 53 students subjected themselves to on Wednesday, 26 June, at the Coonabarabran Public School Spelling Bee. In the junior section, 33 participants encountered tricky words, often stumbling over the many vowel combinations that English is notorious for using.

In the third round, all 10 remaining students spelt their words incorrectly and we had to redo the round. After

six rounds we crowned the champion – Rebecca Staniforth, who spelled ‘novelty’ correctly.

Runner up was Clayton Savage (Year 2), who misspelled ‘membrane’.

Twenty students in the senior section were vying for the crown.

After seven rounds, William Weatherall was declared champion with the words ‘vacuous’ and ‘melancholia’.

Matilda Graham came in second with the word ‘extravaganza’.

Rebecca and William will now be invited to participate at the regional finals to be held next term. We wish them success as they represent our school.

Tooraweenah Preschool Preschool friends have had a fun time during ou r B u s h P r e s c h o ol visits lately, with lots of engineering and building skills being used to build several ‘stone cities’ along the banks of the creek.

We thank the parents and community members who have joined us on these fun ‘outside the gate’ ventures.

Children have also tested their climbing a nd ba la nci ng sk i l ls when negotiating the ‘mou nt a i n s ’, a s wel l as finding some other ‘tracks’ up and down the creek banks. Some have worked well, others were a little steep.

T he ‘crocodile logs’ that children placed in the ‘waterhole’ several we e k s a g o a r e s t i l l f loating and children have enjoyed seeing how high the water splashes when they’ve carefully thrown stones into the waterhole: remembering the rule that we have to be standing next to our friends in a sideways line! We don’t throw any rocks in the creek as we don’t want to squash any of the frogs there.

We h ave aga i n practiced our emergency drills both on our own and with friends from To or awe en a h P ubl ic S cho ol . It i s r e a l ly impressive to see how our preschool friends work together as a team and keep each other safe,

keeping calm and being very responsible. Well done friends!

We recently received our new puzzles that we were able to purchase thanks to the Gilgandra IGA Community Chest donation. We have a new set of four fabulous dinosaur puzzles and also some ‘optical illusion’ puzzles, where we need to match and sequence colour, size and shape.

These have been more challeng ing than our friends have thought.

We were also able to purchase some wooden mu lt icu ltu ra l pe ople figurines for small world play, some Australian animal figurines and three new water and s a nd whe el s for ou r sandpit fun outside.

We h av e e nj o y e d our weekly visits on a Thursday to big school where we have enjoyed shared reading with our friends at Tooraweenah Public School. We are ver y i mpressed w ith how clever our school friends are at reading, with our older preschool friends who are going to school next year excitedly telling us that, “ This time next year, we’ll be reading to you!”

What fun we had when we visited Gulargambone Preschool recently for a fun day of play with f r iends f r om severa l different preschools. We had a lovely time, had

a great bus trip (special thanks to Mrs Tindell and the Gulargambone Community Bus) and everyone involved in the organisation of this fun day.

The games were fun and the sausage sizzle was a h igh l ight! We can’t wait to see our Gulargambone Preschool friends again next week when they come over to our preschool to join us for the day and for Bush

Preschool.

Healthy Harold has been for a visit with his friend Josh and taught us all about ‘Super Safe Harold’.

We’ve had such a busy end of term two, we hope everyone is resting up in the school holidays because we are going to be just as busy in term three, which begins for us on Wednesday, 24 July.

WEATHER WATCH Cocos Island has had the warmest December to May period in 72 years of records, with each month being over one degree above normal.

The previous warmest December to May periods were in 1957-1958 and 1997-1998.

The July to December period last year was also

the driest in 121 years, with only 79mms, and it was also dry from July to December 1997. This may suggest this year will follow that of 1998.

Despite suffering a heavy loss to the Baradine Magpies on Saturday, the Coonabarabran Unicorns’ league-tag team displayed a ‘never-say-die’ attitude.

The winter blues have had an effect on our golfing numbers, with six players starting on Wednesday, 10 July, but only four finishing the 18 holes. Two players r et i r ed w ith nu mb fingers and toes.

The winner on the day was Carmel Munns, who was in fine form scoring 46 stableford points.

That’s an excellent score and you can expect a big drop in your handicap.

Our girls also put in a g reat per forma nce at the Binnaway Open Tournament. Four of our new players – Carmel, Elaine, Kat and Trish – were excited at the thought of playing on a different course and,

from the scores returned, had no problems with the different layout.

Brave Kookas in epic Golfers contest Nurse Taylor Trophy battle against ‘Roos WEEKEND GOLF

A cold south-west wind welcomed players, sponsors and supporters to Coonabarabran’s number three oval on Saturday, 13 July, for the vital clash between Coolah and the Kookas, who were placed second and third on the competition ladder.

RUGBY UNION This was a game the Kookas needed to win to secure third position and a home semi-final fixture.

The Kookas elected to run with the wind in the first half, hoping to use the advantage to dominate territory and establish a good lead by half time.

However, it was Coolah who dom i nat ed , thei r big forwards charg ing relentlessly at the Kookas’ defensive line. Many times they looked certain to score, only to be thwarted by the desperate, lastditch defence of the home team.

F i n a l ly, C o ol a h managed to score a try after the ball was thrown along the backline and t hei r w i n ger, L i a m McLoughlin, crossed in the corner. The try wasn’t converted.

Kookas made their first visit inside the Coolah 22 and a great run by Brad Pugh took him to within five metres of the Coolah line. As he was tackled, Pugh delivered a spectacular pass inside for Tyler Fraser t o g rab a nd cr oss for the try. Unfortunately, the conversion was unsuccessful and the score was 5-5, which it remained until half time.

C oola h opened the scor i ng i n the se cond half with their number eight, Murray Wilkinson, diving over and Logan Pike adding the extra two points for a 12-5 lead.

A penalty goal to Liam McLoughlin followed soon after when the Kookas were caught offside, taking the score to 15-5.

The match appeared to be slipping away from the Kookas, but they rallied superbly. The forwards began to get on top of their

bigger rivals and the ball was sent out wide along the backline in several attacking raids.

A great break was made

by Jed McEvoy as he burst through the opposition defence, found only the Coolah fullback in front of him, who he easily wrongfooted, and ran around to score next to the posts.

Caine Thompson converted the try to make it 15-12.

The Kookas tried very hard to score again, but the Coolah defence held on a s t he home t e a m came within centimetres of s c or i n g on s ever a l occasions.

The full-time whistle sounded and the score remained at 15-12, with Coolah securing the win.

All the Kookas players can be very proud of both their defence and the spirit they showed in making a strong comeback in the second half.

Coolah is a good

team and have secured second spot on the ladder.

They will be a threat to Wel l i ng t on when they meet in the major semifinal in two weeks’ time.

The Kookas now need to defeat Trangie next week, who have had their first win in two years, to lock in fourth position and potentially a trip to Molong for the minor semifinal.

O n e o f t h e C o on aba r abr a n G ol f C lu b’s m ajor t r ophy events was played on Saturday – the Nurse Taylor mixed 4BBB. The draw for partners drew some early

contenders for the trophy event, but in the end, it was school buddies Zoe and Aden who took the win from Stan and Trish on a count back with 39 points.

points.

League action under lights Playing a home game under lights on Saturday, 13 July, the Coonabarabran Unicorns first-grade side won a hard-fought local derby against the Baradine Magpies in the Castlereagh League competition, winning 20 to 6.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE Earlier, despite guts and determination, the Unicorns league-tag side went down to Baradine by 60 points, the game p l a y e d i n w i n t e r y, blizzard-like conditions.

At Gilgandra, players and suppor ters would have been well pleased w ith the Panthe r s’ pe r fo r mance i n the opening 40 minutes of their game against the Narromine Jets, despite the fact that they were down by four points, with the score board reading 16 to 12 in favour of the visitors as they trooped to the McGrane Oval dressing sheds at half time.

The home side had come from a 10-nil deficit mid-way through the first half to lead the Jets 12 to 10, with just a minute to go before the break, only to see the visitors score a converted try after a Gilgandra handling error handed the visitors great field position which they duly transfor med into points at what was a vital stage of the game.

As it turned out, the error by Gilgandra was to be a p recu r so r fo r the Panthers’ secondh a l f d i s p l a y, w h i c h saw them repeatedly squande r pos ses sion, p ut t i n g t h e m o n t h e back foot throughout the rema i nde r of the game. During that time the Jets powered away to a strong 42-12 win.

That win positions N a r ro m i n e n i ce l y o n the competition ladder in third place while, at the same time, all but killing off any hope that Gilgandra had of playing in the semi-finals.

In other games, Cobar was too strong at home for the Gulgong Terriers, taking the game 52 to 12, while Coolah had little trouble fending off the Coonamble Bears in a Boronia Cup Challenge game with a 56-4 victory, remaining undefeated and at the top of the competition ladder.

Tur ning to round 12 games, the Gilgandra Panthers have a ver y faint, flicker ing flame of hope of gaining a semi-final berth if they can win thei r th ree remaining games and t h e G u l g o n g Te r r i e r s lose all of their games, so the impor tance of the game between the two clubs at Gulgong on Saturday should not be understated – but it is a long bow that the Panthers will be drawing.

Unicorns, who currently sit in equal fourth position w ith Gu l g ong on the l a d d e r a n d face th e unenviable task of trying to be the fi rst side to take the bounce out of the Coolah ‘Roos this weekend, are assured of a semi-final position because they have a bye the following week.

The Cobar Roosters face the long road trip to Baradine for the ‘Battle of the Feathers’ against the Magpies, and while they should be confident of retu r ni ng home as winners, they would be very ill advised to take the Maggies lightly.

The highly-popular reser ve g rade competition continues with games at Narromine, Gulgong, Baradine and Dunedoo, with results in all of them being vital to the composition of the final five.

Moree Boars remember Bernie Briggs in fine style

Rugby league and rugby union shared the Moree sporting spotlight at the weekend, with both codes drawing big crowds at their respective matches despite cold, blustery weather both days.

At Moree rugby grounds on Saturday, Weebolla Bulls hosted Ladies Day, where more than $30,000 was raised for local not-for-profit organisation, Gwydir Industries.

Across town at Boughton Oval on Sunday, Moree Boars trounced Narrabri Blues 78-22 at a special sponsors’ day round honouring the late Bernie Briggs, a sporting icon and treasured member of the Moree community.

Briggs died in 2017, age 58, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sponsors’ Day, featuring the Bernie Briggs Shield, came two weeks after Moree Boars celebrated Old Boys’ Day in honour of Paul “Poey” Raveneau, another local sporting icon taken by cancer three years ago.

Moree Boars president Todd Mitchell said the club remembered two great men of local rugby league.

“Poey and Bernie were terrific clubmen. They were what being a part of Moree Boars is all about – they typified the club,” Mitchell said. “My best memory of Bernie is of him walking past my work every day, wearing his towelling hat. He’d nearly always pull up for a yarn.

Chills and thrills at Moree Bulls’ Ladies Day

A huge crowd braved a chilly afternoon at Weebolla rugby grounds on Saturday to support Gwydir Industries, one of Moree’s best-loved, not-for-profit organisations.

Moree Bulls’ Ladies Day is the biggest event on the club’s social calendar, with gate takings, raffle sales and auctions this year raising more than $30,000.

Out on No. 1 oval, the Bulls defeated Quirindi Lions 29-12, with three tries to Mitch Adams and two to Simon Harris.

Afterwards, a painting by acclaimed artist Jo White and 23 commissioned, one-off jerseys – the full kit from first-grade – went to auction.

The painting, portraying a

Gilbert football emblazoned with Moree Rugby Club’s celebrated Weebolla bull badge, went under the hammer for $3500.

Collectively, the jerseys made up the bulk of money raised on the day, with the No.3 jumper worn by James Gall fetching $6200.

Weebolla Bulls club president David Watts said there was one prerequisite when Jo White donated her artwork to the Ladies Day fundraiser.

“Jo requested all proceeds from the auction be donated to Gwydir Industries, our beneficiary for the day. It’s a magnificent painting and created a huge amount of interest.

“We expect the final amount raised will exceed $30,000 but it will be a few days until we tally it all up. It was a very good day for the club and, of course, a great day

Gwydir Industries board president Bill Crawford said the afternoon of rugby and fundraising again showcased the Moree community’s generosity.

“It’s been a great day; people are spending up and buying raffle tickets all over the place,” he smiled.

Gwydir Industries, a special needs organisation established in Moree more than 60 years ago, provides large-scale recycling, furniture restoration and joinery, trophy engraving, letter- and paper-folding and a shredding service for confidential paperwork.

Mr Crawford said money raised on Saturday will be used to establish a girls’ administration training area.

“We were genuinely thankful and humbled to be considered as the beneficiary of the auction and raffles, and have been blown away by the generosity of the club, and the people of Moree,” he said.

“We have been developing ideas to expand our services to encourage more girls to join our workforce.”

He said the organisation plans to add administration training, gardening, sewing and artwork to its list of services.

“We will also consider ideas from potential employees if they are interested in a particular area of work. Hopefully, we can help that person in their desired field,” Mr Crawford said.

“The Moree community has been supporting Gwydir Industries for 60 years, allowing our employees to continue supporting Moree through our services.”

Ladies Day is traditionally the biggest event of the year for Weebolla Bulls.

Sponsors’ tents and a special ladies area offered all-day grazing boards, ploughman-style lunches, and complimentary gifts and lucky door prizes.

Over the last five years the massive day of rugby, live entertainment and socialising has raised more than $100,000 for local charities and not-for-profit organisations.

“We really wanted to promote Gwydir Industries and let the people of Moree know what they do, and what they do for the town.

“Each year we support a different organisation. Last year, the recipient was Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the year before was the cancer support group at Moree Hospital.

“Ladies day is by far our biggest event of the year, for a regular round day, and a great way to raise money for such a fantastic, local organisation,” he said.

Shore director of boarding debunks common boarding school myths Despite preconceived ideas of boarding schools being overly authoritarian, for regional families, they are increasingly becoming the preferred choice as they place great value on a well-rounded education that nurtures comprehensive development.

Boarders relish diverse opportunities at TAS Boarders Clare McDouall and Dustin Uebergang enjoy life at The Armidale School so much, they even opted to spend some of their recent school holidays there.

Clare, from Upper Horton and Dustin, from Inverell, were two of the student managers of this year’s long-running TAS Forensic Science Camp, an academic extension opportunity that attracted 80 Year 8 boys and girls from 18 schools in NSW, Queensland and the ACT in July.

Over the course of the week, the budding young detectives sharpened their laboratory skills, applied logic and interrogated their intuition to solve hypothetical crimes scenarios created by the ‘camp controllers’ - TAS Year 9 and 10 students who undertake a special Stage 5 elective subject designed for the event.

“It gives students an insight into the world of forensics, building skills and what sort of career paths are available,” said Clare, whose duties included camp logistics such as recruitment, catering, accommodation and entertainment.

It’s not the first time Clare has given up some of her holidays to spend time at TAS; earlier in the year she returned for a production camp for the school musical ‘Chicago: Teen Edition’.

“I take as many opportunities as I can and sometimes the biggest challenge is what to say ‘no’ to, says Clare, who is also a cadet leader and prepares meals for the

Dustin attended last year’s camp before starting at TAS this year.

“I thought the controllers last year did a great job at coming up with challenging crimes, and

given the experience I had, I wanted to help make it a good camp for this year’s detectives. It was pretty fun making the crimes, and the semester elective taught us a lot about what kinds of tests can be done and how to piece together a mystery,” he said.

Dustin says he loves boarding at TAS and the other opportunities it has given him.

“Lots of sport such as playing rugby against the Sydney GPS schools, academic challenges like the da Vinci Decathlon which I enjoyed, as well as boarding life

generally. The staff are really nice and I’ve made some great friends – everyone has been very welcoming.”

Moree Boars remember sporting icon Bernie Briggs in fine style Continued from front page

“Bernie was just a great bloke.

He’s one of the nicest blokes I’ve met, and everyone liked Bernie.

He didn’t have an enemy in the world,” he said.

Briggs played in seven rugby league grand-finals for Moree, in juniors as well as seniors, and helped win six titles.

He played in 142 A-grade matches, was a long-standing life member of the club and collected the coveted A-Grade Best and

Fairest Award in 1980 and 1984.

In 1973, Briggs converted a John Brooks try to bring the coveted University Shield home to Moree.

Pancreatic cancer also claimed Poey Raveneau, the 27th life member of the club.

Raveneau played more than 350 games for the Boars, 221 of them at first-grade level.

He captain-coached first-grade to the 2004 Group 4 grand-final, won by Wee Waa Panthers, and coached different Moree sides at

different times for many years.

Raveneau moved to Ballina in 2017 with wife Stacey and sons, Bryce, Layne and Peyton.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020 and died in March, 2021, two days after his 47th birthday.

“I often call Poey ‘the glue’. He was the glue that held the club together for a long time,” Mitchell said.

“He kept the core group of players together as a team during

times when the club was doing it pretty tough – he kept the club going.”

“There are three blokes I think of when I think of the Moree Boars – Alf Scott, Bernie Briggs and Poey Raveneau,” Mitchell said.

Scott passed away in 2019, aged 94. Incredibly, for 71 of those years he was directly involved at local and regional group level.

Scott was afforded life membership in 1973, and in 2016 Moree

Boars unveiled the Alf Scott Medal, an annual award recognising individuals responsible for the growth, prosperity and success of the club.

“Alf was a great bloke and stuck with the Boars through thick and thin,” Mitchell said.

“He stuck solid with Moree. We had some pretty tough years for a while, and we were on the end of some pretty big floggings at different times, but Alf always remained upbeat and positive.”

• What made you decide to choose Wenona boarding for your daughters?

Our first contact with Wenona was at a Boarding Expo in Narrabri. The Wenona staff were amazing, and we walked away from our discussions feeling that Wenona was a strong possibility. We also had the chance to speak to a Wenona alumna who had graduated only a few years prior which made a significant impact on us. A few weeks later we toured the school, and we were so impressed with the facilities and all it had to offer our country kids, but what stood out the most was just how happy all the girls were. Everywhere we went the girls were smiling and they looked happy to be at school.

Wenona boarding suited us because we had three very different girls, who all needed different things. The smaller boarding community meant that our daughters could get the one-onone attention that they needed.

We love how the girls interact in the house. Girls from Year 7 to Year 12 all get to know each other - lots and lots of big sisters.

We love that our country girls can learn to live in the inner city and appreciate all it has to offer. The boarding house itself also feels like home, not a serviced apartment.

• What aspects of Wenona boarding do you as a parent appreciate the most?

The care and support that Wenona offers boarders and boarding parents is unparalleled.

In our nine years at Wenona, we have never felt let down or disappointed. The staff really know our children and can guide, discipline and care for them. This was a major factor in our decision-making. This has been the case for all our girls in almost every aspect of not only their education, but also sports, cadets, further education choices; even down to boyfriends and friendship dramas! The challenges faced by a Year 7 girl compared to a Year 12 girl are different, but Wenona Boarding has guided our girls (and us) through these years. There is also a significant amount of care for parents which I didn’t know I would need, but have gratefully received over the years.

say that they are fearless - they genuinely take every opportunity that comes their way and are so independent.

• What are your thoughts on Wenona’s location in North Sydney?

We were adamant that we were

going to give our girls the experience and confidence to live in the city and Wenona’s location was central to that. The girls learnt to navigate all forms of public transport and to be independent in making their way around the city.
