Local nurse scoops award Coonabarabran registered nurse Garima Nepal has taken out the Pauline Webster-Cox award for New to Practice Nurse of the Year, announced by Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) on Friday, 12 May, during International Nurses Day celebrations. In addition, awards were presented for Nurse of the Year, Team of the Year, the District’s inaugural Nursing/ Midwifer y Leader of the Year and Aboriginal Nurse/Midwife of the Year. Adrian Fahy, WNSWLHD Executive Director of Quality, Clinical Safety and Nursing, congratulated all nominees and award winners, saying they were never people who seek accolades, but who thoroughly deserve them. “Our nurses are the frontline across our health system. They, along with all our midwives, continued to do an incredible job, providing first-class care to our communities through another challenging year,” Mr Fahy said. “Their warmth, compassion and ded ication conti nues to p rovide empathy and care in every patient interaction. The skills, leadership and communication our winners have d e m o n s t rate d i s a tes ta m e nt to their talent and drive to continue developing.” Mr Fahy announced the following winners, who were presented with their awards at local celebrations across the District. • Nurse of the Year: Rachel (Simone) Purtell (Registered Nurse, Narromine Health Service); • Te a m o f t h e Ye a r : Wa l g et t Multipurpose Service Nursing Team; • New to Practice Nurse of the Year: Garima Nepal (Graduate Registered Nurse, Coonabarabran Health Service); • Aboriginal Nurse/Midwife of the Year: Lee-Ann Hurst (Clinical Nurse Specialist Ambulatory Care, Bathurst Hospital); • Nursing/Midwifery Leader of the Year: Madeleine McKenzie-Lindgren (Nurse Unit Manager Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, Dubbo Hospital). Along with Garima Nepal, other local nominations for the awards included Narelle Andrews – Aboriginal Nurse of the Year; Tracey Pickette – Leader of the Year; and Coonabarabran Health Service – WNSWLHD Nursing and

Midwifery Team of the Year. Ms Nepal said she was extremely honoured to receive her award, which recognised ‘demonstrated excellence in care and leadership, attaining a high-level skillset which has allowed to manage complex situations with minimal support, and her opinions and advice are valued highly by her colleagues. Garima commenced a pathway of learning to allow early transition to undertake triage and emergency department work, takes every opportunity to support colleagues and learn new skills, and always goes above and beyond in providing care’. As a small child, Garima had dreams of becoming a doctor, however, she was inspired by her brother to move to Australia and study nursing like him. So, in 2018, she packed up her life, leaving family and friends behind in Chitwan, Nepal, population 700,000, for a better life. She undertook her training at the Australian Catholic University in Sydney alongside her brother, who is now working as a nurse in the USA. When the opportunity arose to come to Coonabarabran, Garima and her partner jumped at the chance, arriving in Februar y 2022 with their golden retriever, Leo. Garima said she enjoys the country lifestyle, being able to travel around seeing the countryside and relaxing with a good book. She continues to embrace and continue her culture with her love of Nepalese/Indian music, cooking mainly Nepalese food of rices and curry, and her Hindu faith. In accepting her award, Ms Nepal thanked her fellow staff members and said she was grateful for the support she has received within the community. When asked if there was there one thing that made her job here in Coonabarabran so special, she said she had recently received some kind words from a very sick patient and “it was a very personal experience that I hold in my heart.”
