IN FOCUS: NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

Our future scientists In celebration of National Science Week, local schools have jumped in on the action, with a variety of activities for students to learn about science...and have fun while doing it! by JIMMY WHALAN S t u d e n t s a t Coonabarabran High School were given the o p p o r t u n i t y t o t a ke par t in a range of act i v it i es th roug h out Sci ence Week i n c l u d i n g a ‘c r y pt i c clue’ competition held at morning assembly, where students needed to interpret clues in order to find the solution. Student s we re a l so a b l e to ta ke p a r t i n activities during lunch time, including a science macro photog raph co m p et i t i o n, a Le g o league robotics competition, a drone challenge, and paper plane competitions - all aimed at strengthening students’ scientific thinking and

sparking an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The fun also continued in class, with ‘STEM box’ activities that included building a wind turbine. National Science We e k f u n wa s a l s o enjoyed by students at Coonabarabran Public School, with students receiving a visit from Warrumbungle National Pa r k E nvi ron menta l Education Centre staff. Junior students were also encouraged to dress up as ‘mad scientists’ on Wednesday, 16 August, looking the part as the conducted a range of sci e n ce ex p e r i m e nt s including bouncing bubbles, robotics and drones!
