Fresh face taking on Coona Cup fashion Shining a spotlight on the glitz and glamour of the Coona Cup race meet is the highly-anticipated Fashions on the Field, this year led by fashion enthusiast, Abby Baker.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY After assisting with judging the fashion at last year’s Coona Cup, Abby expressed her excitement about taking on a bigger role this year as the event’s coordinator. With outof-town judges joining the panel and a surge of online buzz, she said the event is shaping up to be bigger than ever.

Abby has been travelling to race meets for the last five years to

contest Fashions on the Field competitions and, as such, is the perfect fit to take the reins of Coona’s event this year.

“I like putting together an outfit, talking to milliners, finding the dress, accessories, and creating the outfit,” she said.

With judges attending from western NSW and Queensland, Abby is excited to show them what Coona and the surrounds is about, through competitors’

fashion.

“I’d like to see people in an outfit they’ve created and feel really comfortable in, something that shows their personality,” Abby said.

When it comes to what exactly those outfits should look like, Abby explained it’s not as daunting as it may seem.

“Colour, light fabrics and millinery are favourites and it’s recommended to steer

clear of any heavy, winter fabrics in line with the spring criteria,” she said.

“In a cost-of-living crisis, however, getting dressed up doesn’t need to come with a steep price tag.

“Lots of people are making their own outfits, fascinators and millinery.

It’s nice when you ask someone where they got their outfits from, and they tell you they made it themselves.”

race meets have drawn around 50 participants for the Fashions on the Field competitions, featuring women, men, and children from both the local community and visiting guests.

Fashion spotters are on hand during the event, encouraging potential contestants to step up and showcase their style.

Also of note is the ‘Silver Section’, for those aged over 60.

The brainchild of long-time Jockey Club

member Sarah Baglee, this section has been running for over eight years.

“At many other such events elsewhere, the fashions are just for those over 18, but we like to have different categories to show off different styles.

“A lot of people have commented that they like the over 60’s section, which has been great to hear.”

Regardless of age, Fashions on the Field is

as popular as ever, with a strong community of regular competitors.

“Especially in the country, I think there’s a lot of people who like to dress up and wear something different,” Abby said.

“I’m excited, I’m ready! “ We ’ v e g o t t h e judges, and over $5000 in cash, vouchers and gift prizes generously donated by businesses.

“There are categories for everyone.”

A popular section of the Coona Jockey Club’s Fashions on the Field is the Silver Selection, won in 2023 by Charmaine Ledden, Coonamble, and Ashley Scifleet, Mudgee.

CHOPPER MISSIONS Hospital transfer – Coona to Orange Around 1.00am, on Saturday, 12 October, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance on an urgent inter-hospital transfer from Coonabarabran Hospital to Orange Hospital.

medical condition, was stabilised by hospital staff and the NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic and a NSW Health doctor from the helicopter’s critical-care medical team before being airlifted to Orange.

Years of study put to the test: HSC exams commence High schools all around the state are quietening down, as Year 12 students commenced their Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations this week, kicking off with “English” on Tuesday, 15 October.

“Students have been work i ng ha rd w ith their teachers over the holidays, putting the f i na l pol ish on thei r preparations,” M r Graham said. “ Students w i l l be glad to have their first exams out of the way.

As prepared as they are, it is always a relief to get that first exam done and settle into the HSC period. “ S t a f f e qu a l ly a r e always glad to have the individual exams done.

“The work both they and the students put in both during and out of school time is incredible and part of the great results students achieve. “ This year, overall, 42 students from Coona High will sit a variety of exams to complete their HSC journey.

“Many already have spots i n un iversity courses and will look for wa rd t o that next step in their education

journey, while others have post-school careers mapped out.”

One of these students, Cameron Whittle, was asked t o represent

students on a st at e wide ‘teams’ meeting on Monday to discuss his HSC preparation and major-work process with the state’s education leaders.

The 2024 HSC exams commenced on last Tuesday, 15 October and will continue through to 8 November.

Local farmers prepare for promising harvest As the harvest season approaches, farmers are gearing up for what looks set to be a great finish to the year.

by JESS RICHARDS With a mixture of crops being harvested across the distr ict – canola, wheat, chickpeas and more, Ulamambri farmer, Andrew Young is excited a b o u t t h e s e a s o n’ s prospects, saying, “the canola is one of the best crops I’ve grown in a while.”

Baradine-based agronomist and farmer, Alexander Deans said late f rosts we re the b i g g e s t co n ce r n fo r growers from Purlewaugh back across to the west.

“A final rain for some l ate r c h i c k p e a s a n d wheat crops would b e i d ea l, ke e p i n g i n mind harvest is already underway for some,” Mr Deans said.

“Roads and delivery po i nt s, co u p l ed w ith some commodity price suppressions, are also of concern for growers moving into harvest.

“Growers can see the potential sitting there and would love an easy run home. The old adage ‘it can be difficult to get a good crop to in the bin’ has never been more pertinent.”

In questioning Mr Deans if new farming techniques had been rewarding this season, he said the implementation of zonal mapping

had allowed more prescr iptive nutr ition, letting growers focus on the best outcome for each production zone.

“Growers are seeing greater uptake in this due to an increase in input costs over time,” Mr Deans said.

“The zonal mapping, coupled with long-term optical spray technology, is creating real value for producers.”

Andrew Young said he looked at following h i s c ro p rotat i o n, a s opposed to commodity market pricing.

“I have a set cropping r e g i m e; s o m e y e a r s one commodity is up, other years the other commodit y is up,” Mr Young said.

“My decisions a re based on max imising production relative to input – and years like this it is moisture input, which I have no control over.”

On farm issues This year, farmers are currently struggling with a number of threats and issues to their crops, such as feral pigs.

Mr Young said he has trapped around 200 pigs since the start of June.

A s a n i n d u s t r y, M r Deans said farmers were also facing challenges w i t h S c l e rot i n i a a n d crown rot expression, which will take some low

percentages of crop, however, harvestability, weather patterns and marketing would be the main focus for producers ove r th e n ex t e i g ht weeks.

Storage concerns Due to the amount of grain around this year, storage could also pose a potential problem for producers.

“Ca n o l a h a s b e e n an issue in the past because Baradine and C o o n a m b l e g rowe r s fill up our closest canola silos at Premer, pushing growers from Coo naba rab ra n a nd district to Spring Ridge, Werris Creek and Willow Tree,” Mr Young said.

Mr Deans said onfarm storage would be paramount this season, particularly if roads and bottlenecks became an issue.

“I would like to see a few more 3’s and 7’s in front of cereal and canola ex-farm values res p e ct i ve l y, to h e l p maintain gross margins,” Mr Deans said.

Farmers are also feeling the cost of living, the same as everyone else, w ith input costs having increased exponentially.

“Fuel costs have been at their lowest – but have also had their highs,” Mr Young said.

T h i s ye a r ’s h a r ve s t season presents a unique blend of optimism and uncertainty.

Uncertain season While crops like faba beans, canola, wheat and chickpeas are showing strong potential, the challenges posed by unpredictable weather, late frosts and the looming threat of vermin have farmers on edge.

“With the added pressure of fluctuating commodity prices, logistical bottlenecks, and escalati ng i nput co s t s , t h e p at h to a successful harvest is not without its obstacles,”Mr Deans said.

“Howeve r, the resilience and adaptability of growers leveraging innovative farming techniques offer hope of some healthy returns.

“A s t h e s e a s o n prog resses, g rowers remain focused on weathering these challenges and capital ising on the potential of a strong crop, all while navigating the complexities of storage and marketing.”

While there are still many unknowns ahead, one thing is clear: the har vest may be a mixed bag, but farmers’ determination to see it through is unwavering.

Local farmer, Andrew Young is excited about the prospects of this season’s harvest.

Protecting NSW from parthenium weed spread this harvest People bringing harvesting equipment into NSW from Queensland are required by law to ensure equipment is free of the devastating parthenium weed.

Headers and fronts must be inspected at border-crossing sites. All supporting machinery and vehicles that have been in Queensland must be properly cleaned before entering NSW. With grain growers preparing for a big 2024 harvest, people bringing harvesting machinery into NSW from Queensland are reminded they must ensure machinery crossing the border is free of the devastating parthenium weed and its seeds.

NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) Parthenium Weed Response Program lead, Nicola Dixon, said headers pose a high risk of introducing parthenium weed into NSW. “It is required by law that all harvesting

machinery, equipment and vehicles which have been in Queensland must be properly cleaned and inspected before entering the state,” Ms Dixon said.

“The person in charge of a header, including the comb and comb trailer, must submit a completed Record of Movement form online or directly to an authorised NSW DPIRD officer at one of our inspection stations.”

The form includes a declaration that the header and comb have been cleaned in accordance with Schedule 1 of the Biosecurity Order (Permitted Activities) 2019.

Operators of all machinery have a legal duty to prevent their machines from spreading parthenium weed into NSW under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015.

comb trailers from Queensland into NSW unless you have a Carrier Biosecurity Certificate from DPIRD inspection sites.

Machinery and equipment, including harvest field bins, augers and grain movers, trucks and low loaders carrying a header, harvest support and escort vehicles, mineral exploration drill rigs and vehicles transporting rigs must be cleaned to remove all plant material, dust, soil and accumulated grease or be treated with a seed sterilant.

Parthenium is the greatest weed threat to NSW. Contact with the plant or pollen can cause serious allergic reactions in people. It is dangerous to grazing animals, hosts crop viruses, prevents desirable plants from establishing and reduces crop and land values.

Local hotels named finalists in excellence awards Two iconic hotels in the Warrumbungle region are in the running for some of the most sought-after titles in the hospitality industry.

by LIZ CUTTS The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) NSW, the pea k hospit a l ity industr y body in the state, has revealed its finalists in this year’s Hotel of the Year awards for excellence for regional and metropolitan pubs.

C o on a ba r a br a n’s I mp e r i a l H o t e l a n d B a r a d i n e ’s T h i r s t y Farmer are both finalists in three categories – Best Traditional Pub Accommodation (under $150), Best Steak, and Best Regional Casual Dining (Western).

Manager of the Imper ia l Hotel, Sam Brown, which also has a nomination for Best Cheap meal under $20, said staff were delighted to be in the running for an award. “ We a r e e x c it e d to be finalists in four categories,” Mr Brown said.

“Best steak would be great to win, as I often receive comments from patrons about their steak being cooked perfectly and tasting delicious. “ We t o o k o u t t h e award for Best Regional Casual Dining last year and we are confident we can win this again, as patronage in the bistro and flow-on to the bars has continued to grow.

“For the first time, we are a finalist in the cheap accommodation

category, which is great as we want to make our ac c om mod at ion even better.”

Mr Brown said while the hotel boasts some great amenities, it is the tireless work of staff that makes the venue what it is. “ The pub game is a 24/7 operation and we are proud and passionate a b out t he work a nd prov id ing a g reat customer experience for everyone all the time,” he added. “ The pub is a place where ever yone is welc ome t o have a quality meal, a drink or two, share a laugh and enjoy and relax and have a hospitable experience every time.”

Hotels from Sydney and the Hunter to the mid and far North Coast and Central NSW are in the running for awards in 43 categories.

Inspiring anthology of local stories Coonabarabran and the Warrumbungle Shire is rapidly becoming the home of artists, drawn in by the natural beauty of the Warrumbungle Mountains and the dark skies. One such artist is Kyro Jurd, who is collating an anthology of written short stories about the land.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Originally from the Centra l C oast , Ky ro moved to Coonabarabran three years ago, without any prior knowledge of the area.

For h i m , t he l ac k of writing groups was disappointing after a city of open mics and spoken word event, so he decided to start his own. “ O r ig i n a l ly, I wa s just wanting to jump in and do a casual writers’ group, and then other people in the community who ran creative programs said, ‘Coona hasn’t had a reg ular writers’ group in a long time. It’s a lot of effort to go to if no one shows up, so it might be better to do something shorter’.

“The process to date has been a long one, starting in August last year – writing the program before applying for a grant from Orana Arts in February, which was then accepted in June.

Orana A rts, the first being creative writing workshops, which included authors being invited to give feedback on pieces.

Stage two is now fully underway, expanding the program to include short fiction pieces that showcase and promote the local area.

Kyro, as the organiser, has submitted a few pie c e s , a s h av e t he participants.

“We’ve sent a call out to regional writer groups like the Canberra Spec fiction group, Hunter Disability Group, and the Outback Writers in Dubbo,” he said. “ T he g o a l wa s 2 0 stories, but we’re going to see what we get back and work with that.”

It appears the project w i l l exceed expectations, with the t o p 10 s u bm i s s i o n s being chosen from c o m mu n i t y e n t r i e s , participant works and published authors “ We’r e not a i m i ng for a big publication, it’s more so that the pa r ticipa nts ca n see

their work in print. We’ll do a limited run of a couple of hundred copies at most, promoting the local region,” Kyro said.

“We’re trying to make it somewhat sel lable locally – though it’d be an interesting thing to give family or friends from elsewhere.

“It tells them about the area through the lens of fiction.”

T he antholog y will also include art – all me d iu m s a s c l o s e ly or lo osely relat ed t o t h e Wa r r u m b u n g l e / da rk sky theme as pa r t ic ipa nt s w i s h – with the plan to have submissions due by mid November for editorial work and publication in early 2025.

“It just keeps growing as more people collaborated and come i nt o the pr oje c t a nd make it bigger, it’s been really fun,” Kyro said. “ I’ve never run workshops before, so it’s a really brilliant learning experience for me more than anything.”

2024 School Leavers’ Guide available Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton is encouraging school leavers in the Parkes electorate to pick up his free guide to assist with life after school.

Mr Coulton said the 2024 School Leavers’ Guide contains information about further education and training opportunities, financial assistance available, finding employment, and mental health support services, as well as important advice about obtaining a Medicare card, applying for a Tax File Number and enrolling to vote.

“Completing school is an exciting time for young adults who have lots to look forward to,” Mr Coulton said.

“However, it can be daunting entering ‘the real world’ after years of schooling.

“There’s a lot to think about when deciding what to do after school. There are so many opportunities and many different pathways to get there.

“That’s why it’s important to explore all your options and have up-to-date information to ensure you make the best choice for you.

“This School Leavers’ Guide is a great resource for all graduating students, providing relevant information that can help set them up for the future.”

Planting seeds of peace Country women throughout Australia have welcomed the funding of the first Rural Women in Action project.

by LIZ CUTTS Members of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) gathered at the Triennial South Pacific Area Conference held in Griffith from 8 to 12 September to learn and share with South Pacific communities.

The ACWW is the largest international organisation for rural women with a membership of nine million through its 365 member societies in over 70 countries. The CWA of NSW is one of these member societies.

CWA members, Evelyn Hampton (Baradine) and Michelle Southwell (Mendooran), attended the event along with Dunedoo member and NSW state president, Joy Beames.

The Rural Women in Action Fund provides a way for each individual member to take an active part in the work of ACWW. ACWW world president, Madgie de Kock talked about Planting the Seeds of Peace project, a new 12-month program designed to develop and

implement a practical training course for Ukrainian refugee children centred around the ecological growing of plans and vegetables.

“The aim of the project is to help children recover from the stress and trauma of war through the therapeutic practice of gardening,” she said.

“The participants will attend monthly classes during the school year to gain knowledge of horticulture. Alongside this the participants will attend practical gardening sessions.

“The practice of gardening has been proven to be a very therapeutic tool for those who have suffered trauma, it has been found to reduce stress, anxiety and depression and to improve psychological wellbeing.

“The project will be implemented in Bucharest, Romania at a school hosting 200 Ukrainian children.”

Inspirational Keynote speakers delivering inspirational messages were a feature of the four-day gathering.

Heather Swan shared her unique story on her transformation

from senior corporate executive to world record-setting wingsuit pilot. She is still the only woman in the world to BASE jump a Himalayan mountain. This groundbreaking climb and jump earned her a Spirit of Adventure Award and countless invitations to speak about her inspiring journey.

Soil and plant expert, Dr Gary dal Broi talked about the large wormfarm development in Griffith and Leeton and the vast improvement to crops after using the worm compost, which has proved to be an excellent source of beneficial microbes and soil probiotics.

Susie Rowe, a teacher of English as a second language to migrants, spoke about effective communication and the difficulties of learning the English language.

NSW anti-slavery commissioner, Dr James Cockayne talked about the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (NSW). He said that more than 4000 people are classed as modern slaves in Australia, with most of them being mainly migrant workers.

Other keynote

speakers included Bill Calabria, from Calabria Family and McWilliams wines; international human rights lawyer, Sarah Mahon; Karen Bentley, CEO of WESTNET who spoke on gender-based violence in the digital world; ovarian cancer specialist Professor Nava Navaneethan, who spoke on early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer; tuberculosis nurse Emma Hunt; HIV programs manager Lauren Coelli; and radiation oncologist, Dr Joseph, who spoke about breast cancer.

ACWW board members presented reports and discussed some of the projects that the organisation is involved with including the voice for a change in women’s health and education, and the Mongolian Project that addresses domestic violence against women.

At the conclusion of the event, it was announced that the next ACWW world conference will be held in Ottawa, Canada in 2026 and the triennial South Pacific Area Conference will be held in Darwin in 2027.

Successful Binnaway Horse Camp Horse camps in the September school holidays are a rite of passage for any horse-loving kid, and Binnaway just wrapped up a three-day camp, hosting over 40 junior riders, with people travelling upwards of five hours to attend.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Organised by M i c h e l l e R a p l e y, J i m La r k i n and Pam Southwell, it was warm weather and laughter that marked this event, as r ide r s s w itched popping over striped p o l e s fo r cow s a n d ropes, with a western fo cu s ta rg et i n g t h e nex t generation of farmers, competitors and ever yone in between.

Four instructors were invited, combining decades wor th of teaching and competitive ex per ience: Bec Bel l, f rom ‘Bel l’s Stock Horses’ in Lake Cigarillo, Adam Wrobel, from ‘Wrobel’s Ho r ses and D og s’ in Denman, Scott McNaughton, f rom ‘ S + L M c N a u g h t o n’, and roping duo, Philippa and Greg Leys, from ‘Crooked Creek Ra n ch’ i n Tamworth.

The kids were split into groups based on age, going from eager seven-year olds just off the lead, to 18 -year olds, and completed a range of activities such as working cattle with Scott and Adam, patterns and ground wo r k w i t h B e c, a n d roping with Phillips and Greg.

The enter tainment didn’t stop when the sun went down, with demonstrations from the instructors.

Bec Bell’s par tner, James, gave a whipcracking demo which was well received by some very eager kids.

Other enter tainment included working dog trial from Adam, and rides on a mechanical bull controlled by Greg and Philippa.

Michelle Rapley said it was a well-received camp.

“We had fantastic weather, and incredible instructors who we are grateful to fo r s h a r i n g t h e i r time and the wealth o f k n o w l e d g e t h ey have,” she said.

“Special shout outs go to Pam Southwell and J i m La r k i n fo r helping bring this together, the Binnaway Show Society and the Binnaway Lions Club for their involvement and support.”

WEATHER WATCH Regional airport funding available I’m pleased that applications are now open for Round 4 of the Regional Airports Program, with up to $7.5 million in funding available for regional airports to undertake essential works to improve aviation safety, access and transition to net zero emissions.

The Dubbo, Broken Hill, Narrabri, Narromine and Gilgandra airports have each received funding under the first three rounds of this program, so I’m hopeful that the Parkes electorate will also be successful in this latest round.

3G shutdown reminder It’s only two weeks until the 3G network is shut down on 28 October, so I’m providing everyone in the Parkes electorate with a final reminder to check if your devices are impacted.

It’s so important that you act now to update or replace any impacted devices so that you and your family can stay safe and connected once the

3G network is closed.

Devices which may be impacted include phones, smartwatches, tablets, in-home personal emergency alarms, EFTPOS terminals and fire and security alarms.

You can check if your mobile phone will be impacted by texting ‘3’ to the number ‘3498’. For all other devices, contact your service provider.

Local newspapers alive and thriving

Last week in Parliament I paid tribute to Narrabri’s Ian and Wanda Dunnet who have recently retired after selling the Narrabri Courier, and its associated newspapers, which has been in the Dunnet family for three generations. It’s the first time in 104 years that The Courier has had a change in ownership, which is an incredible achievement in this day

and age.

Rural newspapers have been dealt a shocking blow by corporate takeovers, but our locally-owned papers are in safe hands.

I thank the Dunnets for what they've done in 104 years, and I wish the new owners, Mark and Susie Slack-Smith, all the best with their endeavours to keep local journalism alive and thriving.

Few pl ac e s i n ou r reg ion have recorded no r a i n f a l l si nc e 2 6 S e p t e m b e r, a n d i t ’s worse off in Queensland, where Palmerville and Normanton in the Gulf Region have not had a drop of rain for now for 200 successive days – the longest since 245 days in 2019.

Trangie was one of the stations which had no rain since 26 September and the first fortnight of this month has being ra i n le s s , wh ich a l s o happened previously in the Octobers of 1898, 1900, 1940, 1978 and 2006.

There was some useful rains near the end of October and early November after some of these episodes, but the summer was very hot indeed, although many places got some muchneeded rainfalls either at the end of December

or early January in our region.

L a s t W e d n e s d a y, 9 O c t ober, Ome o, i n Victoria, recorded minus 2.8 degrees, the coldest in October since minus 3.7 degrees in 2006 and before that in 1994, 1989, 1978 and 1965.

The Melbourne subu rb of S coresby r e c o r de d 0 . 5 on t he same day, the coldest i n O c t ober si nce 0.1 degrees in 2006.

It maybe worth noting that the challenges of long-range forecasting are increasing because the o cea n patt er ns are no longer normal.

A l mo st t he whole of the Pacific and Indian Ocean sea-surface temperatures around Australia have been two degrees above normal for several months.

At Cocos Keeling Island it has been not ably wa r mer a nd somewhat d r ier than usual every single month since September 2 0 2 3 , 13 m o nt h s i n succession, and nearly every month this year has recorded the highest-ever

temperature for those months in 72 years of records dating back to 1952.

L o ok i ng at a l l the records for Cocos Island back to 1952, there was certainly no prolonged warmth like this current one, which makes longrange forecasting very difficult indeed.

S o f a r t h i s mont h at Cocos Island it is sti l l notably wa rmer and drier than usual.

Usually, when the odd month or so bei ng notably warmer than u s u a l at C o c o s t h i s time of year, it leads to above-average rain in our region.

O n 17 S e pt em b e r, Darwin, with 52.4mms, had its wettest S eptember day si nce 54mms in 1981. Other very wet Septembers at Darwin were in 1942, 1950 and 2020.

From my historical r e c ord s I went for a hot t er su m mer t h a n usual and also wetter than usual, particularly in Victoria. I don’t expect to be very accurate after th is fore cast I made nearly a month ago.

Bowman eyes $500K win in Kosciuszko Race Coonabarabran horse-racing enthusiast, Brett Bowman is in a position to win up to half a million dollars in the Kosciuszko race, as one of only a dozen sweepstake ticket winners across the state.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY It was a surprise for the whole family when Brett got a call from a mate while in Lismore, on only a single bar of service. “ I had no idea the draw was on that day, and I thought there was no chance of winning,” Brett said.

“Then, Ben, my mate, asked if I bought a ticket in the Kosciuszko, and I said ‘yeah I did’, and he sent me the last four d ig it s of t he t icket s which lined up, so I said ‘send me the first four’, which he did, and those numbers also lined up. “ I started to shake be c ause I c ou ld n’t believe it was me.”

The Kosciuszko is the world’s richest race for country-trained horses, carrying $2 million in prize money.

Ever y horse in the race is nominated by a winner of the Kosciuszko sweepstakes, who share in the prize money of their nominated horse.

Brett explained that he h ad b ou g ht $10 0 worth of tickets a few months ago, giving it a waiting period before buy i ng a nother $15 0 worth.

A fter the ticket a n nou nc ement c a me through, Brett selected ‘Boom Torque’ within a matt er of hou rs,

explaining that he knew the tra i ners a nd the horse’s background.

Boom Torque is currently ranked second favourite to win.

It’s been a positive ex p er ienc e f r om t he get -go for the whole Bowman family.

“I’ve been offered to go down to the stables and see the horse and I’ve been invited out for dinner. Matt Dunn (the ow ner) has made me very welcome.”

Over the years, Brett a nd h i s fa m i ly h ave put a lot into the local racing industry, buying and breeding horses, with three broodmares and a few of three, two year olds, yearlings and foals on the ground.

This year the family is also stepping up to sponsor the C o onaba rabra n C up, hopi ng “ what goes around comes around.” “ This is a lifechanging opportunity, and even it we have no luck and come near the rear, we still end up in the front,” Brett said.

“It’ll be a great day, we’ve got tickets for the family and friends.

“I haven’t been able to sleep for the last couple of weeks to tell you the truth, and we’ve still got days to go.”

Jan returned a fantastic score of 47 points on Wednesday, 2 October, and I did do a write up on her wonderful performance, but where it went after I pressed “send” is a mystery – the article has not been seen since.

We feel that Jan’s score was possibly a record for our club – 47 points over 18 holes of golf !

Fantastic turnout for Outlook Ag field day

The spectacular setting of Outlook Ag’s annual field day at ‘Lochearn’ Bellata is hard to beat, with the Nandewar ranges providing a magnificent backdrop to the trial crop plots on what was a beautiful sunny day.

The interactive and informative sessions were just as impressive, and the high crowd numbers reflected the growing interest from the agricultural sector with more than 160 people attending the recent event.

“It’s a brilliant crowd,” said Mitch Cuell, agronomist and Outlook Ag director for the Narrabri region.

“It is engaging and that’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to make it pretty interactive and get people asking plenty of questions - roving mics, panel sessions.”

The crowd included a mix of growers, agronomists as well as agricultural and industry representatives from across the North West plus this year there were even some international visitors from Morocco and Pakistan.

Attendees would’ve built up an impressive step count for the day as they moved from session to session inspecting the trial crop plots. They were encouraged to ask questions, network, and check-out

the variety of trade stalls.

Outlook Ag agronomist Drew Penberthy has been hosting research trials at his property ‘Lochearn’ for 20 years and Mr Cuell praised both his generosity and passion for the farming game, helping agronomists share research with growers in an effective way.

“Having Drew’s support and him offering his farm to do all this work - it’s second to none,” said Mr Cuell.

“Drew’s pretty modest but what

he does for the North, I mean, he’s got quite a productive farm and to forgo a lot of this land for production and to develop trials for all the farmers here to adopt in the next few years is pretty selfless.”

The field day hosted popular guest speakers and discussions about new crop varieties, crop nutrition and protection, disease, and precision ag case studies.

“We’ve got a lot of new varieties here on display,” said Mr Cuell.

“So, on Drew’s farm he’s sown commercial strips and we’ve got small plots as well.

“But probably the notable mentions are Sundancer so that was released by AGT, which is sort of an early, early to main season variety sowing window.

“So that’s going to be a really good fit for us here in the north.

“And then we also have Optimus, the Lancer replacement, which is stacking up to be really, really good and has got the same structure as Lancer and looks to be as high yielding - we’re pretty pumped to have that.

“And we’ve got some really good disease work here too.

“So, looking at rust and stripe rust in particular across a lot of those varieties and fungicide strategies on those varieties and getting some really good results and really good interaction.”

A stand-out feature again in 2024 was the large soil pit display, dug out to clearly demonstrate what happens underground as crops grow and to show the root development within the soil profile.

Mr Cuell said they’d received positive feedback about the display and it was one of the highlights “Obviously, every year, the new varieties are a bit of a key takeaway for a lot of growers but probably the soil pit and the nutrition chat as well.

“There are just a lot of interactions there that a lot of growers wouldn’t necessarily see at a lot of other field days.

“We did the soil pit last year at the field

day in a dry year and seeing how the crop works underground in a dry year, and our wet year this year - it just gives everyone that little bit of a thought in their head: ‘Oh, maybe that’s why that crop’s doing that at that growth stage’ or there’s a soil constraint there that’s affecting that type of crop.

“So yeah, I would say the takeaways are from the nutrition discussions and then also the rust trials, too.

“They’re pretty visual when it comes to understanding why it’s important to manage rust.

“We also had Dr Steven Simpfendorfer, who’s probably the leading pathologist in the north, to help us run through it and understand the interactions of the rust in the different varieties and the key timings for fungicide strategy, and he extends it really well.

“Every year he comes to these events and really engages the crowd and gets a good energy and a good vibe around his presenting.

“It’s just been a really great day.

“And obviously, another big highlight was the smoking meat van - that got everyone pretty fired up.”

Mr Cuell thanked the attendees, Outlook Ag team and supporters who helped to make the field day such a success.

“We’ve got some amazing supporters and our trade stalls here, who have supported the day. INCYT a technology company - they’re into all the latest tech, probes, weather stations, etcetera.

company, Omnia, Neutrologics, which is a fertiliser company and Spray tech, another fertiliser company.

“AGT - a seed company. Longreach Plant Breeders - seed company.

“Go grain, a grain logistics app. We’ve got Imtrade crop science, they sell a lot of chemical and support us with products like Guerrilla and Propyzamide.

“And then we also have Intergrain who breed barley and wheat but predominantly barley in this neck of the woods.

“Syngenta, they’re supporting us with their product Victrato, so it’s a crown rot seed treatment coming to market.

“ADAMA has a product called Monsoon, so they’re supporting us as well and BASF has a product called Revista.

“So, all those guys, together with Rabobank and Foundation Agri Finance - it wouldn’t happen without their support.”

‘Contractor’ concerns

Moree Plains Shire Council has been informed that there are ‘contractors’ in Moree offering cheap driveways/repairs with ‘leftover hot bitumen’ from council work.

In a statement, council said residents should be very cautious if they are approached by people offering this type of work via a doorto-door approach.

Council suggests that any resident approached and offered services like this collects whatever details can be safely obtained and report the matter to NSW Fair Trading by calling 13 32 20 or lodging a complaint online.

Homeowners should ask for a tradesperson’s licence and check the business name and ABN before they agree to a contract and pay any money.

Caloona Road reconstruction work starts Moree Plains Shire Council has advised that reconstruction and traffic control works on Caloona Road between Barrakee Road and Whalan Creek have started. Work started on October 9 and will be carried out between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday and is expected to be completed in four months (weather permitting).

Changed traffic conditions including intermittent stop/slow and a reduced speed limit of 40kmh will be in place during work hours. Motorists should allow extra travel time.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signage.

Children’s photos on the wall and the fridge, nominations above the window, a backyard full of wellloved play equipment, including a boat to let the imagination soar and trampoline to jump into the sky. It is a place for toddlers and children to grow early memories while also being a place full of nostalgia for early 2000 kids.

Most importantly, this is where the Family Day Care (FDC) Tamworth and North West Regional Educator of the Year operates.

The “wonderful families” that Carrie Leader works with nominated her for the FDC Educator of the Year Award which acknowledges educators for their work.

As the name suggests, her family’s lives have been ingrained into the business and Carrie believes they were “probably more excited” than she was about receiving the award. “[My children] are thrilled because they have grown up sharing a parent and having their backyard not always theirs,” she said.

“They had to put up with locks on the cupboards and things like that, having to shut the gate and put things away. Having to respect my business in their home.”

The educator is not one to enjoy the limelight but she now has no option after receiving the regional title. Carrie’s nominations for the award from the last 10 years are proudly on her living room wall, but now she can add that gratifying honour right beside them.

“I was just surprised,” she said. “I know I am only one out of a thousand people or more who would be in the running for it.

“What I do everyday is my passion, so to receive an award for

Carrie stated the “love of children” kick started her career, having a background of babysitting while working at the Commonwealth Bank.

She always felt a connection with children and would rather play with the youngsters at a party than be with the adults.

After her ‘daycare mum’ broke her arm, she offered to look after the children and within three months was enrolled with FDC. Trying to juggle work, life, family and being a mother to three children, (one of which with a disability), was difficult and going to a centre was not an option. “[FDC] gave me more flexibility in my working life to be around for them,” she said.

family sharing space with a business, but more than a decade later she is still in full force.

“I will probably retire in my backyard,” the educator said.

Many of the children in Carrie’s care started at just a few months old and some are well into teenagehood. She has begun recognising them behind the counter at Woolworths or out and about with their families.

It takes a moment for the realisation to click into place for the children but once it does, that is when Carrie hears all “the great stories”.

She currently has 13 children in her care including those in before and after school care.

“You form such an important bond with children and their families that makes your career worthwhile,” she said and emphasised her fortune of having a career that “enriches” her own life.

“They are happy to come here because it is a part of a family,” she said.

“It is a sense of belonging to this area and environment.”

One of the adversities faced by FDC educators is the ongoing need to prove the job is more than ‘babysitting’.

Educators are trained under the Education and Care Services national Regulations and Law and have a minimum required qualification of Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, with Carrie holding a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care.

“We are not backyard babysitters.

We are equal to educators who work in centres,” she stated.

The next step for Carrie will be an award ceremony in Sydney next month to see if she takes the state’s title.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has cancelled all 12 products containing the herbicide chlorthal dimethyl. This follows the recent United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) emergency order to stop use of chlorthal dimethyl (DCPA), also known as Dacthal, in the US. Chlorthal dimethyl is a herbicide used in vegetable crops, lawns and cotton that is currently in 12 products available in Australia.

APVMA chief executive officer, Scott Hansen, said the APVMA identified an immediate risk of serious injury or serious illness which could result from use of these products.

“The APVMA has the power to act swiftly where we identify an imminent risk to human health and we are exercising that authority today with the cancellation of all products containing chlorthal dimethyl,” said Mr Hansen.

“We haven’t taken this decision lightly and are exercising a high degree of caution in cancelling these products and ask those who

hold them to cease use immediately. We will issue information on the product recall requirements shortly.”

Mr Hansen said this decision brings Australia into alignment with international counterparts and reiterated that there is no phase out period for the products due to the risk to human health.

“The APVMA considers the risk of continued use to be unacceptable as the risk of exposure cannot be effectively mitigated.

“The primary risk is to pregnant people’s unborn babies, particularly where those people have handled the chemical or re-entered areas where the product has been used within the last five days.

“We understand the impact that this regulatory decision will have on industry, but the safety of people is of paramount importance.”

Farmers and retailers may continue to hold product until further notice, but must not use it. The use of chlorthal dimethyl as an agricultural chemical product is now illegal.

Regional crime inquiry gets Closure of 3G underway in western NSW The Parliamentary Inquiry into Community Safety in Regional and Rural Communities has started with hearings conducted in communities in western NSW. Hearings have been held in Bourke and Broken Hill, with future locations and dates to be advised by the committee.

The inquiry has received almost 200 submissions from individuals, organisations and services from across NSW. The inquiry is investigating the drivers of youth crime in the regions, as well as specific actions the NSW government can take to support best practice prevention initiatives and improve community safety.

Bourke hosted the first hearing on a Tuesday earlier this month and was followed by a session in Broken Hill on the Wednesday.

Committee chair, Edmond Atalla said these were the committee’s first regional hearings.

“As part of this inquiry, the committee wants to hear first-hand from regional communities about the issues they are experiencing with respect to crime and public safety,” Mr Atalla said.

“We also want to hear about services and programs that are working well – from standout community services to law enforcement initiatives and leading diversionary programs – as well as gaps in service provision that need to addressed.

Narrabri Shire Council was one of many local government areas to make a submission, detailing its own work in relation to crime prevention.

In its submission, council said it is of the view that a whole of government approach is appropriate and necessary in the reduction of the drivers and root causes of youth crime in regional and rural NSW. “Narrabri Shire, like many remote rural and regional areas, is experiencing increasing rates of juvenile crime. There is real concern that the age of legal responsibility (“Doli incapax” will be increased without appropriate analysis and supporting measures to our communities to manage youth crime and justice issues, including but not limited to appropriate diversion programs,” council’s submission read.

“A Youth Justice Taskforce, similar in nature to that introduced in Queensland, is urgently

requested to enable a whole of community and government approach to this issue.

“The importance at crime prevention to our community has been recently reflected in a recently commissioned Micromex community satisfaction survey which identifies that community safety/crime prevention has one of the highest levels of importance and the lowest levels of satisfaction.”

Council said further support and emphasis on diversionary programs, including the PCYC model, is needed.

In its 2023/24 operational plan, council has listed the investigation and advocacy into a PCYC that operates outreach services across the shire as an action item.

NSW Nationals Leader Dugald Saunders said the start of hearings in regional NSW is an important step to developing a whole-of-government approach.

“In the past year, we’ve heard terrible stories of people being bashed in their homes, knifed in their yards and having their cars stolen, leaving our residents living in fear,” Mr Saunders said.

“The fact is, it took the Premier more than six months to take this issue seriously, and the situation

is only getting worse, so this inquiry has been a long time coming.

“Our communities have been calling for this, and now they finally have a chance to share their stories and help contribute to possible solutions that are tailored to them.

“Although this is a good start, I would like to see this inquiry expanded as soon as possible to visit more areas across the regions, because a cookie-cutter approach won’t work. Every community is different and will need slightly different approaches.”

Shadow Minister for Police Paul Toole, who is on the committee, encouraged people to get involved.

Mr Toole said the government has put a lot of focus on Moree, but the people of other regional communities are still no closer to a solution.

“This Parliamentary Inquiry will look at the problems in each area and will give our police the backing and resources they need to address this crisis,” Mr Toole said.

“Our country cops are doing the best they can. They are on the front-line every day and have done an excellent job at getting through a heavy workload with very little resources.

“But they need help, and this inquiry will give us the chance to figure out what the core issues are and what our hardworking police need to combat this issue.”

$1.2 million safety upgrade for Rangari Road Rangari Road has received a $1.2 million safety upgrade on a section of roadway near the Narrabri Shire boundary.

The work included road widening and sealing work on a 650-metre section of road about 25 kilometres east of the intersection with the Kamilaroi Highway at Boggabri.

Last year, Transport for NSW completed work on the

19.6-kilometre upgrade of Rangari Road between Boggabri and Manilla, located in the Gunnedah and Tamworth local government areas.

The work involved widening and sealing the road from 3.8 kilometres east of the boundary of Gunnedah and Tamworth local government areas to the boundary of Gunnedah and Narrabri council areas.

Labor Upper House member and Duty MLC for Barwon, Stephen Lawrence MLC said the $1.2 million upgrade work will help ensure a safer and stronger road network across the New England.

“This work will improve safety for motorists by straightening the sharp bend motorists had to navigate when entering Narrabri Shire,” Mr Lawrence said.

“This is a huge win for the local community and will benefit 300 motorists, including 30 heavy vehicle operators, who used this section of road each day.

“These two sections of improvement work complement each other and ensure all road users travelling to, from and around the north west of NSW experience safer and smoother journeys.”

network looms Nearly 60,000 mobile phones will not connect to triple-zero when the 3G network shuts down, as telcos continue urging customers to upgrade their technology.

Telstra and Optus will close the ageing mobile network from October 28, having delayed their earlier deadlines to launch a public safety campaign.

A Senate inquiry in July confirmed thousands of phones would not be able to connect to the emergency line after the closure, while medical equipment, EFTPOS machines, alarms and farming technology could be cut off.

About 59,000 handsets remain that will not connect to triple-zero on the 4G network, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said industry figures show.

These devices have been a concern for the government and industry as users may not know their phone relies on 3G for emergency calls until after the shutdown.

The handsets - often bought overseas or second-hand - use 4G data for regular calls and texts but bump triple-zero calls to 3G because they do not have a technology called Voice over LTE. There were 740,000 of these devices in use in early 2024, prompting the government to form an industry working group.

The latest figures represent a marked reduction, Ms Rowland said in a statement to AAP. “Industry has undertaken significant efforts to identify and contact potentially affected customers and share critical public information about the 3G switchover,” she said.

All telcos have a service for customers to check the status of their device by texting “3” to the number 3498.
