Lightning sparks Pilliga fires Over the weekend, fire crews grappled with several blazes that were ignited in the Pilliga Forest after an electrical storm on Friday, 8 December. by JIMMY WHALAN Kate Carter, public information officer for NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Narrabri Brigade, said the fires were attended by several crews including Narrabri RFS brigades, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), NSW Forestry, and Narrabri Fire and Rescue. Friday’s electrical storm saw dozens of fires ignited, with three remaining out of control – the Duck Creek, Terra Delba Road, and Sawpit fires. Over the weekend, crews worked to establish control lines, with the Terra Delba Road listed as ‘being controlled’ on Sunday, 10 December. The Sawpit fire was contained at 8am on Saturday, 9 December. As of Sunday, the Duck Creek fire had continued to grow, as it approached 15,000 hectares in size. Ms Carter said that crews from Castlereagh Zone RFS, as well as crews from the Hunter and the Mid North Coast arrived on Sunday to aid in the response to the fires. “Crews that attended the fire included 25 units, comprising approximately 65 crew,” Ms Carter said. On Sunday, NSW RFS reported that the smoke from the fire had been impacting surrounding areas along the Newell Highway, but that there was no immediate threat to communities. As of Monday, 11 December, firefighters continued works to contain the Duck Creek fire and conducted backburning operations overnight to strengthen containment lines. At the time of going to print, NSW RFS spokesperson Greg Allan gave an update on the status of the three fires in the Pilliga. CONTINUED PAGE 2
