Climber falls in Warrumbungles At about 6pm on Saturday, 7 October, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to attend Warrumbungle National Park, west of Coonabarabran, to assist a man in his 30s who had fallen approximately 50 metres and sustained multiple injuries.

Arriving on scene, the helicopter critical care medical team was unable to be winched into the location due to high winds.

The helicopter landed at a location nearby, and the medical team hiked to the scene on foot.

Unable to be extracted due to the severe weather conditions, a critical care paramedic and doctor treated the man for shoulder, rib and limb injuries before spending the night at the scene with him.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter returned to

base around midnight and returned to the scene at about 9am Sunday, 8 October while still facing challenging weather conditions.

A second critical care paramedic was winched into the scene to assist the medical team with the patient’s extraction.

The patient, doctor and the two critical care paramedics were winched into the aircraft before being flown to Dubbo Airport, where the man was transported by road ambulance to Dubbo Hospital.

Here’s some original art you can bank on Simon Martin has spent the past year preparing for the grand opening of his gallery in Coonabarabran, which will contrast modern art with old architecture in the former Westpac bank building.

by GEORGIA SPENCE As a local artist, Mr Martin is hoping to immerse Coonabarabran into his world of peace and creativity by opening the door to his own gallery in John Street He describes his work as ‘visionary art’ and is excited to share his passion with community.

During COVID, Mr Martin spent a lot of time on the road, living in various national parks.

He found hi mself resid i ng at Coo n a ba ra b ra n’s I m pe r i a l H ote l and while sitting on the verandah, he noticed 71 John Street across the road.

The fo r mer bank bui lding is 98 -years- old and has had a long history of owners.

The building first opened as the Bank of Commerce in 1915, serving as various financial institutions before transforming into a community and computer learning centre in its later years.

Decades down the line, it is soon to face a new future as an art gallery.

“My aim is to open the gallery and to sell my art to fund renovations,” Mr Martin said. “ I w o u l d l i ke to r e n ova t e t h e building back to as new as possible and continue making art.”

The building holds many memories for people and Mr Martin hopes the renovations will leave the building standing for another hundred years of memory making.

Once open, the gallery may also be accessible on weekends.

Mr Martin anticipates his opening w i l l b u i l d c o m m u n i t y, c r e a t i n g a n i nv i t i n g s p a ce fo r p e o p l e to decompress.

“A theme of mine is that I like to put

peace back on the agenda,” he said.

“I’m trying to paint peace into the world.”

Throughout his life, Mr Martin had an interest in learning about art.

Growing up in Mullaley, he ventured to have many careers, including work on cranes, the disability sector and advocacy.

I n 2 0 17, h e w a s i n s p i r e d b y Indigenous art in the Daintree and wanted to learn the techniques.

Attempting to teach himself the technique, he discovered his own unique style.

He feels his farming background allowed him to “jump in and give it a go.”

Mr Martin said he is inspired by the patterns he sees when he closes his eyes.

He descr ibes the feel ing of inspiration as an epiphany.

“I can’t draw, I can’t paint and I can’t sculpt, but when I put it all together it looks alright.

“I don’t paint things – I paint ideas,” he said.

Each painting takes around two months to create, however, he is able to manage multiple projects at once.

Future plans involve hosting events in the space, combining modern art and music.

The grand opening of the Simon Martin Galler y will be held on S a t u rd a y, 2 D e ce m b e r, o f fe r i n g a n i g ht of a r t, ch a m p a g n e a n d canapes.

For now, Mr Martin is working hard to create an immersive space and waits in anticipation fo r opening night.

“No one knows what I’m doing until I open up the doors,” he said.

“I’m very excited to share it.”

Water restrictions introduced Ongoing dry conditions and a drop in water supply has forced War rumbungle Shire Council to introduce level one water restrictions for C oonaba rabra n, Binnaway, Mendooran and Merrygoen, effective f r o m T u e s d ay, 10 October.

Despite rainfall across most of the region last week, Timor Dam has fallen to 70 per cent capacity, which is the trigger for introduction of water restrictions in line with Council’s Drought Management Plan.

Christmas lunch returns After a four-year hiatus, local volunteers are embracing the Christmas spirit as they prepare for the Coonabarabran Community Christmas Lunch once more.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Christmas is around the corner and the Coonaba rabran community is preparing for t he C om mu n it y Christmas Lunch.

For some, Christmas Day is a day of giving and celebration, but for others, the day can be lonely and leaves many feeling isolated.

This is apparent in r u r a l c o m mu n i t i e s , with many who may not have access to family memb er s or supp or t networks.

I nd iv idua ls w ith i n C o onaba rabra n have recognised the common struggles and are dedicating their time to provide an all-inclusive Christmas lunch.

A popular past event, the luncheon has had previous set backs over the past three years due to COVID and a lack of volunteers.

This year, however, 30 volunteers have come on board, offering to bring the community together to celebrate the festive season.

This year’s lunch has been spea rheaded by Sally Taylor, who has prev iou lsy helped t o organise the event.

W hile pleased with the response, Ms Taylor notes more volunteers

a re needed , as more roles could be filled.

Initially, the lunch was instigated to provide disadvantaged people with a place to be on Christmas Day. T h e lu n c h i s n o w inclusive for all community members.

“No one has the right t o determi ne what people’s disadvantages are,” Ms Taylor said.

“It is about respecting each other in the community.”

Catered th rough donations from community members and businesses, a brightly de corat ed ha l l a nd tables will feature all the Christmas trimmings, with attendees welcome to join in a sing-along.

T he Commun ity Lunch highlights the spirit of Christmas – celebrating community and giving without the need to receive.

While the aim of the day was to bring the community together, Ms Taylor said the venture was not possible without the effort of volunteers. “ We d o n o t w a n t people to sit alone at Christmas,” she said.

“Everyone is welcome!”

Transport will also be offered to those who require collection and drop off.

Lions: service that roars Lions Club members from across the district will converge on Coonabarabran this weekend, 13-15 October, as the organisation hosts its annual general meeting and convention at the picturesque venue of Warrumbungles Mountain Motel.

The first Lions Club was formed in Australia 75 yea rs ago a nd has s i n c e i mp a c t e d m a ny lives as a not-for-profit organisation.

Forty-five clubs th roughout the 2 01 District are preparing to meet in Coonabarabran for their annual general meeting.

T he D i st r ic t c over s areas from Coonamble, down to Wagga Wagga and out past Griffith.

G eof f F reudenstei n, D istr ic t G over nor, has been a part of the Lions Club for 23 years.

C u r r ently, he i s busy organising activities for the weekend.

He notes the purpose of the general meeting is to have fun, while sharing and gaining knowledge. “ I t ’s a c o n f e r e n c e , br i n g i n g l i ne s o f t he d i s t r i c t t o g e t h e r, t o share ideas and thoughts and to have our annual gener a l me et i n g,” M r Freudenstein said.

T he con ference w i l l include multiple g uest spea kers, cover i ng a range of topics.

One guest speaker will be ‘Donna the Astronomer’

– Donna Burton, who will provide the clubs with a tour of the stars, while promoting the importance of a dark sky.

Attendees will also be trained in the technology needed for the Lions Eye Health Program.

The technology from the pr og ra m pr ov ides children aged from 4-12 with a free assessment of their eyes.

Mr Freudenstein said the program is to help children gain a better education and start in life.

Another guest orga n ised t o spea k at the conference is David Horne, general manager of Lions Hearing Dogs.

Throughout the weekend, club members will also have time to mingle and enjoy the local sights.

Mr Freudenstein acknowledges the Lions C lubs as a rewa rd i ng service.

“A town is not complete without a Lions Club,” he said. “ T he respect and

s upp or t t h at a L ion s Club can give to a town is unbelievable. “ W h i le it may seem small at times, it is very rewarding to be involved.”

Mr Freudenstein hopes the conference held in Coonabarabran will lead to the re-establishment of a Lions Club within the town.

He encourages anyone over t he age of 18 t o joi n a nd b e c ome pa r t of creating a difference within communities.

With a motto of “ We S e r ve ”, L ion s C lu b aims to gain insight on what communities need throughout the nation and action the knowledge they uncover.

Geoff Freudenstein, 201 District Governor of Lions Australia, will welcome club members to the annual convention to be held at Coonabarabran this weekend.

Will there be a Voice?

This Saturday, 14 October, the Voice referendum voting day will be held across Australia, when Australians will have their final say as to whether they support the proposed alteration to the Constitution.

by JIMMY WHALAN For those who have not registered for a postal vote or voted early, local polling will be held at the Coonabarabran Sport and Recreation Centre (Youth Club) on voting day, with polling centres also available at Purlewaugh Mechanics Institute, Binnaway Central School, Tooraweenah Public School, Baradine Central School, Tambar Springs Public School, Mendooran Central School, Coolah Central School and Dunedoo Jubilee Memorial Hall.

These polling centres will be open from 8am-6pm.

Though the Australian Electoral Commission will not formally announce the result of the referendum until a strict confirmation process confirms the result, an ‘unofficial’ result could be known on the night.

The official result could, however, take almost two weeks to confirm – depending on how close the result is.

At the time of writing, millions of Australians had already voted in the referendum, with 2,212,581 people having voted at an early voting centre, 1,945,823 applied for a postal vote, and 92,162 having voted via an AEC mobile polling team.

The last time Australia held a referendum was in 1999, when Australians voted on whether Australia should become a republic, meaning Australians under the age of 40 have never voted in a Federal referendum.

There, the helicopter’s critical care medical team further treated and stabilised the woman before airlifting her to Tamworth Hospital.

Elsewhere, rain was more limited, but large parts of southeast Queensland, South Australia, and southwest WA had at least some ra i n, i n cont rast to a relatively dry winter.

Cattle Markets were disrupted last week by the public holiday, which prevented several sales from occurring. Numbers were down among sales that did run, which meant cat t l e ya rd i n g s we re down almost two thirds

from last week to 27,396 head.

Indicator prices were mixed. The feeder steer indicator eased 4¢ to 218¢/kg liveweight (lwt), while the heavy steer indicator lifted 22¢ to 231¢/kg lwt. The reduced number of sales changed the composition of the indicato r s somewhat, affecting performance.

Sheep and lambs Similar to cattle, fewer sales went forward due to public holidays, which meant yardings fell. Lamb ya rd i n g s we re d ow n 82,192 from the previous week to 120,646 head, whi le sheep ya rdings we re d ow n 17, 8 69 to 168,685 head.

Indicator prices lifted substantially compared

to the previous week. The trade lamb indicator rose by 45¢ to 478¢/kg carcase weight (cwt), while the mutton indicator lifted 65¢ to 170¢/kg cwt.

In percentage terms, the m ut to n i nd i cato r rose 64% over the week, the largest single-week increase for the indicator on record. Fewer sales affected indicator performance, but prices increased week-to-week in ever y saleyard that did run except for the SA livestock exchange and Warwick.

Cattle slaughter fell by

3,228 from the previous week to 124,875 head.

Slaughter in NSW fell by 3,2 28 to 31,051 head, and Victorian slaughter eased by 1,001 to 14,608 head, while slaughter in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia rose.

Combined sheep and lamb slaughter fell by 55,603 to 577,986 head.

Slaughter fell in every state except South Australia and Queensland, and the largest drop was in Victorian lamb slaughter, falling by 32,166 to 196,871 head.

Exports Australian red meat exports for September totalled 168,579 tonnes, 1% l e s s t h a n A u g u s t and 35% more than

September 2022.

Beef exports rose 40% year- on -year (YoY) to 98,712 tonnes, and the United States was the l a r g e s t b e e f m a r ket fo r the month, w ith exports increasing 184% YoY to 24,4 31 tonnes.

Promisingly, exports to Japan lifted for the first time this year, suggesting that demand for beef is beginning to rise after several subdued months.

Locally-discovered comet makes a return Comet 103P Hartley, discovered at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) in March 1986 by astronomer Malcolm Hartley, will make a return this week, having a favourable appearance in the night sky.

by JIMMY WHALAN The comet will reach ‘perihelion’ (the point at which it is closest to the sun) tonight on Thursday, 12 October.

T hou g h t he c omet reaches this ‘perihelion’ once ever y 6 .5 yea rs (the length of time it takes to make one orbit), the comet only makes a favourable appearance on every second perihelion – meaning this will be the f irst favourable appearance of the comet since 2010.

The comet may not be visible to the unaided eye, however, a pa i r of binoculars or small telescope would provide a view of the comet.

The comet will be low to the north, but heading south during the second half of the night.

The Discovery On 16 March, 1986, as he was checking for any imperfections on the previous evening’s

illuminations, Malcolm Har tley discovered someth i ng he wasn’t expecting to find.

Mr Hartley said, back then, the observations ca me as negatives, meaning objects in the sky, like, stars appeared as black dots on a clear background.

Upon noticing a dark haze around a trail, Mr Hartley thought he may have discovered a comet.

Upon submitti ng h is f i nd i ngs t o the Minor Planet Centre in Cambridge, the centre informed the astronomy commu n ity of the discovery of what would be called Comet Hartley 2; also to be known as Comet 103P Hartley.

Mr Hartley said it was a fantastic feeling to have made the discovery, but m o d e s t ly ad d e d that in a commun ity like Coonabarabran – the astronomy capital of Australia – it’s “not

really a big deal.”

The comet M r Har tley said the 103P Hartley is a periodic comet belonging to the Jupiter family of comets.

“Jupiter family comets a r e c ome t s w it h a n orbital period of less than 2 0 years” M r Hartley said. “ It is classi f ied as a dwarf comet, with a nucleus of approximately 2.2km across.”

Mr Hartley said this Deep Impact Spacecraft passed w ithin 70 0 kilometres of the comet.

“The spacecraft used two sma l l telescopes w ith d ig ita l colou r cameras and an infrared sensitive spectrometer to image the comet nucleus – shaped very much like a peanut!”

Case closed? Optus responds to service drop-outs In last week’s edition of the Coonabarabran Times, we heard from some locals about issues the community has been having with Optus mobile service. In search of an explanation, we contacted Optus and our Federal Member for some answers – following is what they had to say.

by JIMMY WHALAN Optus Optus Territory genera l ma nager, Northern NSW, Chris Simon said Optus was committed to expanding a nd en ha nci ng thei r network and explained the reason for the local outage on Tuesday, 3 October. “ R e c ent ly, ou r net work c overage i n C o onaba rabra n a nd Binnaway encountered d isr uptions due t o a fibre break caused by an external party, and a power failure,” Mr Simon said. “ The sites impacted have since been restored, with service resuming as usual.”

Mr Simon said Optus was actively exploring plans to improve customer experience in the region.

“Our team will be conducting a comprehensive sit e inspection, prov iding

insight into the coverage status and improvements required to bolster our network resiliency.”

He said Optus had added n ine mobi le sites within the Parkes ele ct orat e t o thei r network since 2019, and that the company was committed to ongoing investments.

In the meantime, Mr Simon said enabling WiFi calling accessibility was a great way to stay connected, especially during emergencies or natural disasters.

“Customers can call 000 even if their mobile provider does not have network coverage in the area – the call will be carried on any available mobile network,” he said.

W hen asked for an e x pl a n at i o n f o r t h e sporadic outages that local customers were facing almost every day, Mr Simon said this week, Optus team members wou ld be conducti ng comprehensive sit e

health checks in an effort to improve transmission link stability in Coonabarabran. “ T hese ef for t s a r e a i med at add ressi ng the minor daily service disruptions being experienced,” he said. “ We are committed to enhancing the connectivity experience for customers in this region.

“Expect further updates as we prioritise implementing a solution.”

Mark Coulton Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton s a id he wa s awa r e there were connectivity issues for Optus users in the Warrumbungle Shire, including the recent outage i n Coonabarabran.

“At this point I have not yet been informed as to the reasons for the O ptus out age i n Coonabarabran, however, my office is aware of it and been following the situation,” he said.

Mr Coulton explained that although the Federa l G over n ment w a s r e s p o n s i bl e f o r t ele c om mu n ic at ion s , it was a shared responsibi l ity w ith multiple party involvement, including i nd iv idua ls, network prov iders, a nd State Governments. “ In this space I have fought for better connectivity across the regions, as I am aware of how great a need this is, especially in rural or remote areas,” Mr Coulton said.

“I live in a rural area and travel frequently in remote Australia, so I know well the limitations of poor connectivity and the impact of mobile black spots.”

M r Coulton said moving forward, he would continue to advocate for improved connectivity and that his office had raised many issues with providers over the years and had

even helped individuals find workarounds for the connectivity issues. “ I encou rage those struggling with connectivity issues in our regions to make use of the Australian Government’s R e g ion a l Te c h Hu b, wh ich m ay pr ov ide advice or solutions on t e l e c o m mu n i c a t i o n s services in your area.”

In reference to con nectiv ity issues du r i n g emer genc ie s , M r C ou lt on sa id the Coalition Government initiated steps to i mpl em e nt a P u bl i c Safety Mobile Broadband capability ( PSMB) in recognition of the safety aspects of connectivity.

“This capability has now been allocated a t a s k for c e u nder t he Nat ion a l E mer genc y M a nagement A gency (NEMA) to ensure that in the case of natural disasters, hazards and threats, Australians are able to stay as safe as possible, even in areas

with poor connectivity.”

Local view L ocal woman, Sara Gordon, said she had been plagued by Optus d rop outs, of t en i n emergency situations.

“I have had several moments when I have needed to contact a close friend in a hurry, but if she isn’t at home with Wi-Fi, then I can’t reach her,” Sara said. “ L ast we ek , I was trying to call her as we were racing to Gunnedah, as my daughter was in labour and I couldn’t get through – no service.

“A few months ago, I was trying to call her as her niece was missing and, again, I couldn’t get through. “ It is absolutely appalling that anyone i s pay i n g for O pt u s these days – they spend more time down than working.”

Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman media unit said in the last financial year, they had received over 20,000 complaints from NSW. Of these 20,0 0 0 complaints, just 21 were made by p e ople a nd small businesses in the Warrumbungle Shire.

Most of these c ompla i nt s were i n relation to poor customer service, problems with a bill, having no phone or internet service, and poor mobile coverage.

T h o u g h t h e O m b ud s m a n c a n n o t compel a telco to build additional infrastructure, they can help in situations where customers were sold a service that doesn’t work as expected.

Baradine to celebrate 120 years of racing Historic connections to horse racing in Baradine will be recalled when racing buffs, horse owners and punters gather to celebrate a milestone event.

by LIZ CUTTS Member s of the Ba radine Jockey Club w i l l commemorate 120 years of racing involvement at a luncheon, with a display of memorabilia followed by a Baradine Cup Calcutta.

Local resident, Roy Matthews has had a lifetime association with country racing in his role as longserving president of the Western Racing Association.

A racehorse owner and member of the Baradine Jockey Club, Mr Matthews is also the caretaker of some of the early records of the club.

“Records show that over the years the club was actually known by three different names,” Mr Matthews said.

“In 1902 it was known as the Baradine Amateur Turf Club, then the Soldiers and Citizens Race Club and in the 1950s the Diggers Race Club.

“The club’s honorary secretary in those early days was Baradine identity, John Witter. He was obviously prepared to give his time to work for local community groups and support events that brought benefit to the town. He is recorded as being the organiser of many successful race meets.

“Another notable contributor to the local race meets was Mick Worrell, who was the official starter for many years.”

Historical records show that horse racing started in Australia not long after the First Fleet arrived in Sydney, and was well established by 1810. Since then, horse racing has developed into one of the nation’s most loved sports.

Although officially formed in 1903, the first record of the Baradine Jockey club race meet appears in the Mudgee Guardian of Friday, 8 December, 1899: ‘The Baradine Amateur Jockey Club has a good programme out for 5th January. This is just a week before the Coonabarabran meeting and should just fit in with the requirements of owners’.

From that time on there were regular news reports on race meetings held in Baradine.

Course fenced T he i s sue of th e Coo na m b l e I ndependent newspaper dated 5 January, 1906 reports that the weather was ‘pretty warm but pleasant and the attendance was exceptionally good. Since the last meeting the Baradine course has been fenced, a saddling paddock enclosure erected and a neat stand built, which proved a great convenience to the officials and also to the public. The appointments were much admired and the stand by people liberally patronised, especially by the ladies, where gay costumes lent a charming appearance to the meeting. The course was in apple pie order and the officials left no stone unturned to achieve an unqualified success, the hon. Secretary (Mr J Witter) being most assiduous in his attentions’.

Apparently, after the first race, Mr J.P Commins unfurled the Federal flag and officially declared the new grandstand open and the Baradine Amateur Turf Club presented John Witter with a gold watch as a token of their appreciation for his valued services.

An indication of the local enthusiasm for horse racing was gained from the Dubbo Liberal on 25 August, 1914, which reported: ‘Baradine is only a small place but the people there are good sports and know how to make life interesting. They now have two race clubs, the Jockey Club and the Amateur Turf Club’.

In 1930, a report in the ‘Arrow’ publication had the headline, ‘Racing not dead in western NSW’, and rather amusingly stated that ‘Despite the presence of old man Depression, racing is holding its own in the central and far-west. Baradine Soldiers and Citizens Race Club is the latest to hold a successful meeting.

There were plenty of gee-gees and lucre there, and the club emerged with a three-figure profit.

The ‘books’ had a profitable time with two clean sheets by the unexpected wins of “Coonanbar” and “Cylienne Laddie”. ‘Cylienne Laddie’, who is now owned by that all-wool-and-a-yard-wide Coonabarabran sportsman, ‘Buster’ Brown, won the chief event at the second day in Baradine by a head from Titus and Swan Dial’.

But racing in Baradine was not without some controversies. In a news report from the Mudgee Guardian of 13 January, 1927, the local horse “Coolah Hatton” won a double at the New Year’s Day races in Baradine. ‘Coolah Hatton carried off the principal handicap of one mile on the first day and followed this up by winning the Baradine Cup over one and a quarter miles on the second day. Mat Fitzpatrick, who owns the horse, piloted him in both races and on the first day earned the displeasure of the stipendiary steward for careless riding and was fined £8. It appears Coolah Hatton was winning easily, but before reaching the post was eased up by his rider, as a result of which the race was nearly lost’.

In 1951, the Coonabarabran Times reported that three horses fell during the running of the Coral Sea Improvers Handicap at Baradine, that resulted in “Partando” being destroyed Flourished In her book “Best of Times”, local historian Judith Hadfield wrote that the club flourished until WWI, when its activities were suspended and then 7 - Coonabarabran Times, Thursday, 12th October 2023

struggled to hold events until the commencement of WWII, when operations were again put on hold.

Racing returned to Baradine after the war and regained popularity. However, eventually race meets in the town were affected by the introduction of tougher rules and regulations that control present day events.

In 1954, the consistent local horse “Conviviality’” ridden by Arthur Seymour, won the Diggers Cup held at the annual race meet. The trophy, donated by Mal McDonald junior, was presented to Mr H Fitzsimmons owner/trainer. The then president of the club, Roy Miller congratulated Mr Fitzsimmons on his success and presented a whip to Arthur Seymour.

In 1980, longtime Baradine Jockey Club member and racehorse owner, Denis Todd had a winner at Baradine, which was followed with winners at 50 different racecourses.

“There are currently about 20 members of the Baradine Jockey Club and we have benefitted from the experience of some excellent trainers over the years,” Mr Todd said.

“The history of the Baradine Cup goes back many years and it is still awarded at our annual race meetings, held these days in either Coonabarabran or Coonamble.”

Mr Matthews added that it is disappointing to see racing dying in small communities because of the difficulty in meeting the regulations and covering operational costs.

“The last race meeting was held in Baradine in 1993,” Mr Matthews said.

“It is sad for our small town; these types of events bring the community together as well as attracting visitors."

Interest Current president of the Baradine Jockey Club, Nathan Harris said that in the last few years the club has been lucky enough to have generated strong interest from locals in being committee members.

“We can usually fill a 45-seat bus for the annual Baradine Cup meeting,” Mr Harris said.

“A group of us became involved in the Jockey Club after we purchased a mare, “Shady Favour”, from the Inglis Easter broodmare sale at Sydney – but it was pretty slow! Denis Todd kindly offered us a service to his stallion “Chat up line” with a condition that we joined the Jockey Club committee! Before that, the club was kept functioning with a handful of older locals, who we have now nominated for club life membership.

“M ov i n g fo r wa rd, we a re h o p i n g to o pen membership to the general public and we still have a dream of holding a race meeting in Baradine, but at another track as unfortunately the original one is no longer usable; but that is another story.”

The celebration lunch will be held at the Baradine Bowling Club on Saturday, 21 October, with everyone welcome. It will be followed the next day with the running of the Baradine Cup at the Coonabarabran Racecourse.

circumstances in 1913, when Charlie Miller, a promising violinist in inner-west Sydney, had his violin-playing career cut short by an industrial accident.

Undaunted, and driven by his passion for music, he started a men’s chorus – the Petersham Glee Club. By 1919, this had become the Sydney Male Choir and throughout its long, unbroken history it has learnt to change to suit the musical tastes and preferences of the times.

VIEW CLUB NEWS Man airlifted following After having to cancel last month’s VIEW Club meeting, everyone was enthusiastic and glad to ‘catch up’ again at our annual fund-raising dinner. Each member brought a long a prearranged dish, but we s t i l l pa id ou r u s u a l dinner fee.

This was a great way to raise funds for our four students and the me a l wa s abs olut ely ‘professional’, showing o f f t he c o ok i n g a nd presentation skills of our members.

fire at The Lodge

Emergency services were tasked to Binnaway on Tuesday, 10 October at approximately 10.15pm, after reports of an explosion at a private accommodation facility. Arriving on the scene at ‘The Lodge’ in Renshaw Street, crews from NSW Rural Fire Service were joined by Fire and Rescue, Police and Coonabarabran Volunteeer Rescue Association, helping to evacuate residents from the building and bring the blaze under control. NSW Ambulance treated multiple patients at the scene, while a man in his 50s was treated for serious burns by paramedics before being airlifted by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. Investigations are continuting.

Parvovirus plaguing pets Parvovirus is a deadly virus affecting canines. It is highly durable and contagious in nature, with the virus being found throughout all towns and environments across the district, prompting local vets to issue a timely warning about vaccinations.

As the weather heats up, more cases of the canine Parvovirus are occurring within the environment.

Parvovirus is highly c o nt a g i o u s a nd c a n affect all dogs and their gastrointestinal tracts.

The virus is spread th rough dog-t o - dog contact, contaminated

faeces and environments.

P uppies and unvaccinated dogs are the most at risk.

Veter i na r ian M att Ha r r is, f rom the C oonaba rabra n Veterinary Clinic, said the v i r us a f fects a l l towns within the district.

“The virus lives within the g round and soi l, meaning hot weather or extreme wet weather can strengthen its effect,” Dr Harris said. “ T he h a rdest pa r t of the virus is that it is extremely tough to kill, as it lives in its environment for up to 30 years.”

Once in fected, a dog w i ll excrete and shed the virus into an environment.

Dr Harris said the nature of the virus is

gastrointestinal, and he recommends looking out for signs of lethargy and low appetite in the animal.

Signs of vomiting and diarrhoea are strong indicators of the virus occurring within the environment and may be debilitating for smaller dogs.

“If there is Parvo in the env i ronment , a n unvaccinated dog will get it and young pups will die,” Dr Harris said.

As there is no specific cure for the virus within ca n i nes, D r Ha r r is strongly u rges dog owners to vaccinate their animals to prevent the virus from occurring, with pups especially at high risk.

“Generally, a puppy will receive three initial

vaccinations,” he said. “ It is ver y ra re t o get Pa r vov i r us onc e vaccinated.”

A yearly booster is then recommended.

For i n fe c t ed dogs , the treatment provided aims to support their body systems, until the immune system can fight off infection.

Immediate treatment is encou raged by D r Harris and consists of fluids and antibiotics.

He notes, however, that treatment can be pr olonged a nd of t en results in poor outcomes, due to the durable nature of the virus.

Dr Harris said it is important to look for the signs of infection and seek veterinarian support immediately.

CWA events celebrate a farming life A bestselling author is teaming up with the Country Women’s Association for a series of events celebrating rural women and their resilience, in the lead up to the 2023 International Day of Rural Women.

Branches at Coonamble, Purlewaugh and Quirindi are organising events this month featuring Liz Harfull, who wrote the centenary history of the CWA of New South Wales, published last year, and has just released a new book about women farmers.

The Purlewaugh function will be a special morning tea on Friday, 13 October, commencing at 10am. Everyone is welcome of course, with a gold coin donation to support the branch.

At each event, Ms Harfull will share fascinating true stories of resilient Australian rural women, from the pioneering spirits who established the CWA and fought to change the lives of country families, to women featured in her latest book, ‘A Farming Life’.

The book explores the lives of handson farmers as their resilience is tested by personal loss, illness, fractured relationships, natural disasters and the challenges that come with working in a traditionally male-dominated world.

Most of the women are responsible for managing their own farms, and their defiance, tenacity and genuine humility shines through, as does their hope for the next generation already lining up to follow in their footsteps.

They include Northern Territory cattle producer Amber Driver, whose mother came from the Coonamble district, and Kelly Dowling, based at Mudgee who was the first woman to be appointed a district wool manager

by Elders anywhere in Australia.

“As a child growing

up at Narrabri, Amber dreamt of marrying a cowboy. After finishing high school, she packed her ute and headed to the outback to work as a jillaroo. Within months, she met her future husband, whose family have held Elkedra Station for three generations. It sounds like a fairy tale, but there were tough times ahead,” Ms Ms Harfull said.

“Kelly Dowling has faced more than a few challenges too. She went back to work on the family property at Gunning, just as the millenium drought kicked in. Later, she had to overcome lifethreatening illness and the loss of a brother, but she is genuinely passionate about sheep and wool and has pushed on, expanding the family enterprise to cover five properties running around 36,000 sheep.

She still classes every single fleece.”

Other women featured in the book include Helen Clark and her daughters, Kristen and Donna, who run a 1000-cow dairy enterprise near Finley in the Riverina; respected kelpie breeder and trainer, Nancy Withers, from western Victoria; and Ruth Robinson, from South Australia, who took over the family farm when she was just 23.

“This is a great opportunity to come along and meet Liz as she tours through the area,” said Purlewaugh CWA member, Jo Wilkin.

“Her contribution to creating a record of life for women in rural Australia is incredibly valuable, and this is your chance to hear her speak.”

Do you have a nickname? Most people call me Nette.

H o w d i d yo u co m e t o l i ve i n Coonaba rab ran? I was bo r n i n Coona and grew up here. I went away to school and uni and then came back. I got married and the rest is history. Coona is a great place to live.

What ’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? Teaching. I love teaching and even though I have retired, I still do casusal teaching today.

You’ve had a stressful day – what’s your way of winding down? Glass of wine and offload to my husband - or anyone who wants to listen!

How would your friends and family describe you in three words? Loyal, sociable and positive.

Have you read any good books lately? ‘I am Pilgrim’, by Terry Hayes was a really good read and I have just discovered a new Australian author, Tim Ayliffe.

D o you h a ve a n i n t e res t i n g o r random fact to share? Butterflies taste the flowers through their feet.

What’s something people might not know about you? Way back, I did a wool classing course and worked in a shearing shed for a season. I enjoyed the theory but I did not enjoy the cold, early morning starts in the shearing shed. Hence, I discovered it was not my forté.

What is your favourite season and why? Autumn, as it’s not too hot and it’s not too cold. It’s just right.

What gets you through a long road trip? Music and the radio. If there is a car load of friends, we talk.

If you could pick a decade to visit on a time machine what would it be?

The 70’s because I was a witness to a lot of social change at that stage and it was a fun time to be young.

If you could have anyone around for dinner (dead or alive) who would it be? I like get togethers and parties. I would have all my family and friends and I would probably resur rect Johnny Horton from the dead to entertain us with Dad’s old family songs.

And what would you cook them?

Definitely a barbie - my husband cooks a mean steak.

When was the last time you had a really good laugh? Most days I find someone to laugh with and I have a fun lot of friends.

What’s something you’re looking forward to? I am catching up with school friends in November for our annual schoolies get together. There are nine of us and we are staying at a really nice BnB on the Gold Coast.

We all like a wine and a chat, so you can only imagine…

Authors’ notes – “Coonabarabran, As It Was In The Beginning” Readers will be aware that, in my articles, I often provide many quotes from “Coonabarabran, As it was in the Beginning” , by Joy Pickette and Mervyn Campbell. These have been allowed, with the Joy’s permission given just before she passed away in 2020.

During many of my readings of this book, I became aware of the “Preface” by Mervyn and the “Introduction” by Joy, and I thought that these notes, not being read by other than owners of the book, should be seen by others.

by Mervyn Campbell “I well remember coming to the Purlewaugh district with my parents in the early 1920s, when my father took over the property “Box Ridge”, an area of unimproved country subdivided by a pony fence. As a boy of seven I was allowed to ride over half the property but forbidden to go beyond the pony fence.

On occasions, riding up to the fence and looking into the forbidden territory, I imagined a vast area of deep gullies and dark gorges in which bunyips and goblins lived.

“I was also told that a ghost existed at the old pub on “Box Ridge” and was somewhat afraid whenever I ventured near that part of the property.

Some of the old hands who worked for my father would not set rabbit traps anywhere near the old pub because they were afraid to go around them at night.

“When I returned home after the Second World War the boyhood fear of the ghost was replaced by a fascination to trace the history of the old Box Ridge Inn. Many years later this interest was expanded to a study of the history of the surrounding district and its personalities. I was therefore overjoyed when approached by Mrs Joy Pickette, of Ulamambri, and asked

WEATHER WATCH The main weather event over the past week has been the heavy-to-flood rains which swamped eastern districts of Victoria, while the rest of this state west of a line joining Ouyen to Wonthaggi received rainfalls of less than 25mms generally.

The heaviest rains were to last Wednesday morning, 4 October.

Record daily October rainfalls included 198.8mms at Mt Hotham, which has only ever had one wetter day –reading of 271mms on 16 May 1974.

Record daily October rainfalls were also set at Falls Creek 149mms, Lake Eildon 108mms, Eildon Fire Tower, 97.8mms, Latrobe Valley 96mms and Sale 100.5mms. For some of these places, the previous wettest October day was on 21 October 1953, which was a dry year in our region north from about Condobolin.

In 1957 there was an separate heavy-rain event just like this recent event in eastern Victoria. This lashed Tasmania, with Hobart receiving 156mms on 15 September – its wettest-ever day in 175 years of records.

The southern fringe of Victoria also copped heavy falls in mid September 1957, when Melbourne had its coldest September day since 1905.

Other areas of Victoria missed out, with only lighter falls, and the severe dry conditions continued through to December 1957 right up to inland areas of Queensland, with maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees by the first week of November and reaching 46 degrees by mid December 1957.

Last month, Lord Howe Island recorded its driest September, with only 27mms in 137 years of records.

The previous driest September was 27.6mms in 1938. From August 1938 right through to early February 1939 it was notably very dry and much warmer over much of the eastern states and also South Australia. Victoria had Black Friday bushfires; Wilcannia recorded 50 degrees in January 1939; and many towns recorded maxima up to 48 degrees, right up to Charleville and Longreach.

Very dry Septembers occurred at Lord Howe Island in 1897, 1927, 1972 , 2017 and 2020. All of these set up above-normal warmth up to the following summer, but many places did have above average rainfalls between November and February; which may mean more thunderstorms than usual.

by Joy Pickette “When my husband, Lindsay, and I bought land at Coonabarabran, it was a portion of the first block ever sold in the district. We owned a small part of William Field’s original purchase of 320 acres, bought in 1859.

“On summer evenings, I would sit and watch the sun set over Nandi Mountain. A wonderful serenity, a timeless q uality, settled over the scene. I would look out across Field’s old cultivation paddock to the site of his Traveller’s Home Inn. I began to wonder what it had been like in those early days.

Had Maria Field, with her busy life, had time to sit and watch the sun set?

“Thus began an interest in the history of the town.

I longed to know who the early people were, where they had come from and why they had settled here.

Soon, I began writing down little pieces of information that had been told to me. Before long I was actively searching for more knowledge.

“The more I learned, the more I wanted to knoww. I found that, although I had studied Australian history at school, I had not scratched the surface. I went back to the beginning and studied the way that the vast lands of the little colony of New South Wales had been settled. I began to understand the driving force that had encouraged people to leave the security of the “settled districts” and venture into the wilds of the” interior”, a region barely known to white men.

“I learned of wealthy m e n, who se nt the ir servants to increase their wealth, grazing sheep, and cattle on lands to which they had no rights.

I read of convicts, who had come unwillingly to this country, owning nothing more than perhaps a

handkerchief and a cap and of how many had raised themselves to be men and women of respectability and means.

I heard of free settlers, who had left their families in “the old country" and adopted Australia as their home, of their hopes and struggles to fulfill their dreams.

“Finding out about Coonabarabran’s past was made more difficult because much of the knowledge is widely scattered. After my holidays in Sydney, my cupboards began to fill with maps, notes, copies of old newspapers and other data. I felt this information should be put into some orderly form.

Mervyn Campbell was more than willing to help.

“This book became an attempt to record as accurately as possible

the early history of the Coonabarabran district.

The area covered is that of the old Squatting Runs which joined the Coolabarabyan Run and those of local importance further out. People have been included who played a major role and who left documented evidence of their lives. It is not, nor was it intended to be, the entire story. Undoubtedly there will be some who have been overlooked.

“I have kept to “old” money and Imperial measurements as they were originally recorded.

Somehow the conversion to decimal currency and metric measures seemed incongruous in a story of last century. For those who wish to make the change, it is a simple enough matter.

“The collection of material has proved a

highly enjoyable exercise.

There is still a wealth of information to be found.

To anyone who has the time and the enthusiasm, I can recommend the gathering of it as a rewarding experience.

“I hope that this book may encourage others to take an interest in the fascination the past has to offer, not only in our small community, but throughout the land. If it helps to give a better understanding of the way our town developed, I shall feel it has been worthwhile.”

Coona defeat Baradine to start new cricket season Coonabarabran’s cricket team made a great start to the new cricket season, defeating Baradine convincingly at Coona’s number three oval last Saturday.

CRICKET On a beautiful day for cricket, Coona won the toss and elected to bat. They were soon in trouble, with some good bowling from Baradine having the home side 4-53 after 12 overs.

At that point in the innings, Cameron W hittall joined Nick Wi l loughby at the crease. Nick had scored 27 to this point and the whole tone of the game then changed.

The boys put on 192 before Nick retired on 127. Cameron went on to make 103, putting Coona in a commanding position.

The Coona side was eventually bowled out on the last ball of their allotted 40 overs for 282.

B en Hjor t, Peter Eastburn and Brandon Worrell each took two wickets for the visitors.

B a rad i ne faced a n enormous task when they star ted their innings and were never likely to overhaul the Coona total. Wickets fell regularly and the

visitors were eventually bowled out in the 24th over for 55, a last wicket partnership of 23 between the Worrell Brothers, Brandon and C a me r on , b ei n g t he

highlight.

Successf u l bowlers for Coona were Jerico Chatfield (4-10), Locky Campbell (3-6), Anthony Harris (1-13) and James Moffat (1-0).

This weekend Coona has a bye. Their next game is the week fol low ing, when they play Town Services in Gilgandra.

Coona Cup sets the pace The Coona Cup is set for a jubilant weekend as organisers prepare for larger than usual crowds.

by GEORGIA SPENCE The Coona Cup is successfully leaping out of the barriers, as early preparations for race day set the scene for a festive weekend.

Organisers are wo r k i ng to amp up Coonaba rab ran’s premier racing event, bringing conditions of the track up to standard and committing to the installation of new facilities.

O v e r t h e p a s t 12 months, 20 new day stalls have been built to house horses until they race.

The racecourse now meets racing compliance, with 10 0 day stalls available for race day.

The new facilities were funded by the Racing NSW Development Fund.

New, 24/7 surveillance systems have also been installed to monitor the racetrack and enforce compliance during race

He expects the d a y to r u n s m ooth l y, as sponsorship was snapped up and marquees successfully filled.

Race day will involve live music from Taylor T ighe and Chicka Maiden, face painting and fashions on the field.

M r F r e e m a n encourages punters to wear their racing finest and contribute to the festivities of the day.

With few big events listed on Coonabarabran’s social calenda r, the Coona Cup promises a fun day o u t, a i m i n g to b r i n g the community out of hibernation and adding a boost to the town’s economy.

support of the town and its proceedings.

“T he b ig g e r event s are always important to support local community groups, plus it is a co n n ect i o n po i nt fo r everyone,” Mr Freeman said.

While there is no word on the forecast for race day, Mr Freeman and organisers would like to see more rainfall to give the track a boost.

“One of the wo rst outcomes for western racing is when the turf becomes dry and loose,” Mr Freeman said.

“A shift in track with a lot of dry grass affects the safety of all involved in race day.”

“If we get some fine weather on the day I think everyone is in for a good time,” he said.

The Coona Cup is not the only race being held over the weekend.

The traditional Yabbie Races will be held on S a t u r d a y a f te r n o o n , 2 1 O c t o b e r, a t t h e Coonabarabran Bowling Club, the event a fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Golf monthly medal hotly contested WEEKEND GOLF The Coonabarabran G ol f C lu b’s O c t o b er monthly medal has rolled around and we had some great weather and a good turn out.

The winner in A-Grade was Frank Nottle with a brilliant net 69! He even four-putted the 9th green

with that score.

Runner-up was Aden Larance with a net 74.

B-Grade winner was D Stevenson with a net 71, with Kerry Vallette the runner up on a count back with net 74.

International netball debut Local netballer, Emma Thompson recently represented the First Nations Budgies netball team at the International Netball Festival held on the Gold Coast.

by JIMMY WHALAN Held from Tuesday, 26 September to Wednesday, 4 October, the competition attracted teams from a c ro s s Au s t ra l i a a n d from several countries, including New Zealand, Samoa and Singapore.

Emma was selected to represent the First Nations B u d g i e s i n J a n u a r y, selected from a group of hundreds of girls and the only player from NSW to be selected for the team.

After meeting the team on Thursday afternoon for a training session, Emma then played from Friday to Monday, with three 40-minute games each day, followed by finals.

Emma said while her team narrowly missed out on second place, her team was awarded t h i rd p l a ce fo r t h e i r efforts throughout the tournament, in which they only lost two games over the four days of competition.

With almost 10 teams in the competition, it was quite the achievement fo r t h e F i r s t N a t i o n s Budgies, especially consider ing they had only one substitution to rely on throughout the competition, while other teams had three to four.

While initially nervous

about the competition, as she hadn’t met any of her team members, Emma said once she got there and played a couple of games her nerves disappeared, and it was a great experience.

Emma named the fr iendships she made and the opportunity to play against teams from other countries as the most enjoyable aspects of the tournament.

Moving for ward, Emma said she hopes to continue with the sport with hopes to continue playing for the Dubbo representative side and the Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS).

L a s t y e a r, E m m a wa s i d e nt i f i ed a s a n I nd igenous Ta l ent by Netball NSW and one of her goals is to achieve that again this year, as it is the final year in which she is eligible.

Having commenced the sport just last yea r, E m ma sa id she transitioned from athletics to netball because she likes that it is a team sport – one where the pressure is shared by ever yone on the team, and one where you can make many new friendships along the way.

Fighting chance for koalas A two-year program to increase and enhance koala habitat near Gunnedah will provide local marsupials with a fighting chance amid worsening weather conditions ahead.

The $1 million Kamilaroi Guda Koalas program, delivered by Local Land Services and funded by the Australian government, recently finished its activities.

It sought to give the local koala population the best chance of survival and recovery in a changing climate.

An area between Carroll and Gunnedah adjacent to the Namoi River was targeted for the program due to the proximity of permanent water, existing remnant native vegetation and suitable koala habitat.

On travelling stock reserves (crown land), 275 hectares of targeted weed control (tiger pear and African boxthorn) and 17 hectares of tree planting took place.

These practices increase the diversity of shelter, feed species and age of trees, as well as remove obstacles to koala movement. Additionally, 50 hectares of improved management practices were also undertaken on private land, which included tree planting and weed control.

To create an important link between habitats, significant remediation activities and revegetation was carried out at a site along the Namoi River, and a wildlife drinker with a permanent water source was installed at another location.

Senior land services officer at Gunnedah, Angela Baker, said the habitat links are an important part of koala survival as the animals are most vulnerable when on the ground.

“Koalas use a lot of different trees and this allows them to move through the landscape more safely,” she said.

An ecologist also carried out a koala presence survey using a detector dog to update previous koala survey data from 2016 and 2017. The findings showed a significant decline in koala activity and will influence where additional surveying will take place over spring and summer this year.

Ms Baker said the dogs are trained to detect koala scat, or poo, and while they don’t usually sniff out individual animals, the canines help better inform koala surveys particularly after good seasons and high grass growth.

“It is more about presence and absence [of koalas],” she said.

“The dogs are particularly helpful after rain, when there is a lot of grass cover and it’s difficult to see [the scat].”

Gunnedah koalas have been in serious decline since at least 2008, largely attributed to prolonged heatwaves in summer and drought. Coupled with the extreme weather, high rates of chlamydia infections have further decreased the population.

Now with the looming threat of El Nino and the dry weather forecast, Ms

Baker said the koalas will again be under immense pressure to survive.

“It is going to be pretty severe,” she said.

“Koala numbers are already incredibly low, and combine that with chlamydia, it’s just one more added stress for them.”

It is not just koalas that are expected to suffer from the dry weather ahead.

Ms Baker said all tree-dwelling arboreal animals will be impacted and there is some evidence their populations are already being affected.

“From the early data we have, it’s looking like numbers have declined,” she said.

Ms Baker stressed the data was not conclusive and could also indicate their activity has decreased.

There has been recent evidence of a koala population existing at Coolah Tops National Park. It was possible there may also be some at Kaputar National Park but recent koala sightings in the Gunnedah area, are rare.

To assist local koalas, Ms Baker encouraged property owners and landholders in the area to apply for a free Tree Troff through WIRES which can help koalas access water during dry times. Even an ice cream container of water, weighted with a rock inside, located at the base of a tree can help koalas and other native wildlife manage heat stress.

The two-year program at Gunnedah was assisted by Aboriginal community support officer, Wally Hammond, who worked closely with the community to increase awareness and engagement in the project and about koalas. Initial consultation with the local Aboriginal community recognised that the Kamilaroi/Gamilaary word for koala should be used, hence including the word “guda”.

Local events in Gunnedah were held to help educate people about the plight of the koala. This included an expert workshop, a Gunnedah community event called Kamilaroi Koala Stories and Star Night and the release of a short documentary titled “What has happened to the koalas around Gunnedah?” which is available free online via Local Land Services.
