Pretty in pink for charity race meet Although the rain disappeared just in time for Coonabarabran Jockey Club’s ‘Do It For Cancer’ charity race meet last weekend, the day was somewhat dampened due to a lack of attendees.

Fashion on the Field winners from last Saturday’s ’Do It It For Cancer’ race meet were: Jess Skinner, Binnaway; Chloe Wortt; and the ever dashing, John Hutton, Neilrex.

The sun was shining and the pink ensembles dazzled at the Coonabarabran Racecourse on Saturday, 6 April, but a lack of numbers at the track was evident – impacted by two days of heavy rain and the timing of the event after the Easter long weekend.

In spite of this, around 100 people attended the event and those who did enjoyed a great day of racing.

Race caller, Col Hodges, said many individuals from the industry were impressed with the quality of the track.

“A big talking point at the meeting was how well the Coonabarabran track handled the heavy rain leading up to race day,” Mr Hodges said.

“And despite the surface being heavy, was completely safe and very well presented by curators Kerry Vallette and Stewart Rodgers.”

The club was expecting high numbers after multiple races were called off for the weekend.

Coonabarabran Jockey Club committee member, Sarah Baglee said the lack of racegoers was disappointing, but she was unsure as to what more could have been done to draw people in.

“It is such a great effort to get happening, you would hope the community would be behind you,” Mrs Baglee said.

“We aren’t here to benefit from the day. We are here to give back to community.

“We tried to make money for a worthwhile cause, however, the donation will now be made from the Jockey Club, not the turn over.

“We want our community to have a diverse range of activities for people, but often it can be

difficult to get the support.”

Many attendees did donate throughout the day, including children, horse trainers and a man who was receiving treatment for cancer.

Even 91-year-old John Hutton, the male winner of Fashions on the Field, donated his winning funds back to the cause.

Fashions on the Field Lady was won by Jess Skinner, while best-dressed girl was won by Chloe Wortt.

Mrs Baglee said the smile could not be wiped off young Chloe’s face, as she loved to dress up and hopes to follow in her mum’s footsteps as a strapper for local trainers.

Coonabarabran Jockey Club’s next race meet will be held in July, while the ever-popular Coona Cup is set down for Sunday, 27 October, and will be held in conjunction with other events throughout the weekend, including the Yabbie Races and WACCI art show.

Mrs Baglee said the October meet aligns with other community events to draw travellers in for the weekend and experience all Coonabarabran has to offer.

After the October meet, structural work will commence at the racecourse.

The Coonabarabran Jockey Club is currently looking for younger members to join and would appreciate any volunteers, whether it be for five minutes or a few hours.

“Being on a committee is the best way to make a community better,” Mrs Baglee said.

“A town can be pretty boring without events and it can be a lot of fun seeing it all come together.”

The thin blue line: Police staffing and recruiting NSW is staring down the barrel of a severe police shortage which can largely be attributed to the costly training required for aspiring officers.

often placing additional strain on those who set their sights on a career in the Police Force.

Becoming an officer

requires applicants to complete a prerequisite course, followed by a nine-month traineeship – w ith no assu ra nce

of employment on completion.

and it is a significant fact or contr ibuti ng to the struggle of the NSW Police Force in recruiting and retaining

staff.

Recent research conducted by the Police Force found student fees were the number one barrier to applying for the job.

Sixty-seven per cent of pe ople sa id they would be more likely to join the Police Force if they were paid to train at the academy.

NSW is carrying 1500 pol ice vaca ncies a nd low retention rates of an alleged 40 per cent, due to the mental and physical strain of the job.

To combat the issue of police traineeships, the NSW Government has committed t o pay i ng student police officers to study at the Goulburn Police Academy.

F rom Ma rch 2 024 , student police officers will be employed as clerk grade 1/2 administrative employees on a temporary, fixed-term contract.

This means students will receive a salar y of approximately $3 0,98 4 over the 16 week study per iod , wh ich w i l l i nclude super and award-based allowances.

Enhanced pay cond itions were a lso identified for retaining existing officers a nd proved t o be a sig n i f ica nt fac t or i n meeti ng re cr u itment targets.

The Police Association of NSW is fighting to increase wages for police officers, with motions to remove the 2.5 per cent wage gaps placed on public-sector workers.

Members of the NSW Police Force saw the first aspect of this in effect in July 2023 with a 4.04 per cent increase applied to salaries.

T here are hopes to see the Government’s ef for t s i n re cr u it i ng police spread to Coonabarabran.

Local claims $100K on scratchie win A Coonaba rabra n shopper has scratched their way to a vastly different future after discovering they’d won an incredible $100,000 prize.

The Coonabarabran player’s winning $5 Instant Scratch-Its ticket was purchased at Coonabarabran Newsagency.

However, the ways in which the winner’s future will change will forever remain a mystery, as the successful scratcher has chosen to remain anonymous.

Coonabarabran Newsagency manager, Melinda Thompson said her entire team was over the moon and wished their winner all the best for the future.

“We’ve all been so excited! It’s wonderful news,” Ms Thompson said.

Campers hop to it Once again, the Easter long weekend had the campgrounds at Warrumbungle National Park at full capacity, marking it as its busiest time of the year.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Over the Easter period, th e Wa r r u m b u n g l e National Park shifts from a peaceful oasis to a central spot for travellers to convene.

Around 60 0 people travel led to the a rea in order to soak up the co o l e r w e a t h e r a n d ventu re on the many bushwalks the National Park has to offer.

During peak periods, customer interactions can reach around 6000, as individuals utilise various channels such as email, phone calls, and on-site visits for day trips to the park.

Campsites were booked out months ahead for Easter, with most bookings coming from families of three to five people.

Visitor Centre s u p e r v i so r, A l ex B a i n said Easter was the busiest time of year for the Warrumbungles.

“I think it is because we come out of the quietest time, as summer is so hot, into Easter, when the weather starts to cool down,” Ms Bain said.

“Easte r i s a f ree, long weekend for most people and we still have good weather. It is hot enough during the day and you can have a fire

at night.

“The shoulder seasons, which are in spring and autumn, gain the most traction due to the pleasant weather.

Our second busiest weekend is the October long weekend.”

Although NSW will n ot ove r l a p w it h t h e Queensland school holidays this year, Ms Bain said similar numbers are expected.

Instead of numbers b e i n g c o n c e n t r a te d over a two-week period, t h e s e v i s i to r s w i l l b e s p rea d o ut ove r fo u r weeks.

T he ex tended t i m e per iod could result in more travellers camping, as there will be capacit y at the park to accommodate a co n s i s te nt n u m b e r of visitors over the four weeks.

A soft opening of the newest amenities was also a highlight over the Easter weekend in the Warrumbungles.

Cu r re nt l y, t h e amenities consist of functional toilets and hot showers, however, they will remain closed until a the official opening at the start of the school holidays.

In order to finalise the works, aesthetic designs need to be completed,

including the planting of trees and completion of paths.

Ms Bain said the upgrades were necessary and she was feeling positive about the official opening.

“T he amen ities a re looking good and fancy.

was 20 years old and with the popularity of the ‘Bungles growing, we thought it was essential,” she said.

T h e Wa r r u m b u n g l e National Pa r k is a significant tourist attraction for the region, w i t h v i s i to r n u m b e r s expected to fluctuate positively th roughout the year, reflecting the park’s enduring appeal and popularity.

Do you have a nickname? Mel or Meli.

H o w d i d yo u co m e t o l i ve i n Coonabarabran? My family moved here when I was eight-years-old. I’ve left a few times, but I always come back.

Where would people recognise your face? I’ve worked many places over the years – Woo’s, Sunshine Café, a few motels, Saddlery by Thompson, the Coona Hotel, and now, the Coonabarabran Newsagency. I play tennis and darts. I’ve volunteered for 10 years with the local radio 2WCR and longer than that with Riding for the Disabled in the past, and most recently, the Bunny Bazaar for the past two years.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A healer. I wanted to be a vet for many years and it evolved into healing all things.

What ’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? Living and working on the Gold Coast I got to practice healing modalities, work with many new and established Queensland and Aussie musicians, work at music festivals and hang out with some lovely women in a Heart to Hands craft group, where we worked with natural fibres to create beautiful pieces that we sold to raise money for the school my kids went to. It was a very nourishing time in my life.

You’ve had a stressful day – what’s your way of winding down? If it’s been stressful, I am more exhausted than usual, so I buy dinner for the kids and go to bed early. Playing guitar and singing soothes my soul.

How would your friends and family describe you in three words? “My do it” (a quote from when I was a kid) or “she doesn’t stop”.

What are your favourite places to visit on a road trip? Anywhere with loads of bush or water. I love to visit the artesian pools at Pilliga and Moree.

I f you h a d a n a n i m a l o r p l a n t

renamed in your honour, what would you want to carry your name? The Wapiti Elk or the Elm Tree (wait, that’s an anagram already!), moss or lichen maybe.

What’s one totally irrational fear that you have? That I’m not enough.

It’s hard work mothering four kids, running a farm and having a full-time job on top.

Do you have a favourite community event or group? Coona has such a great community and so many wonderful organisations it’s hard to pick just one. I really miss the Crooked Mountain Concert in the Warrumbungle National Park.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? It feels like home.

If you could have any superpower what would it be? Clicky powers – I help people without them noticing with the snap of my fingers!

Have you read any good books or watched any good movies lately?

I’ve fallen asleep during quite a few lately!

What are the top three items on your bucket list? Raise good kids into fantastic adults, make a difference in my community, do something to be remembered for.

Do you have a hidden talent? Poi – I can twirl fire!

If you could pick a decade to visit in a time machine, what would it be? If you said century, I’d pick when the pyramids got built, but a decade would probably be the 70s. I was born in a decade when a lot of interesting people died. I’d love to meet them.

If you could have anyone around for dinner who would it be? My grandparents. I miss them.

When was the last time you had a really good laugh? Telling jokes with my Dad. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Trust your instincts and listen to your heart.

Embroiderers, knitters and sewers throughout the region have submitted their best work for the upcoming Country Women’s Association (CWA) state competition.

by LIZ CUTTS Members of the Castlereagh C ountr y group of CWA gathered at I l ford on Monday, 25 March, for a council meeting and judging of the g roup handicra ft competition.

Group president, Annie Johnston welcomed ever yone, with a reminder that the CWA of NSW annual conference will be held in early May at Coffs Harbour, and thanked all the branches who are fund-raising for the new C WA accommodation wing at the Macquarie Homestay in Dubbo.

Group international officer, Helen Marsonet reported on the international seminar on France, this year’s CWA country of study, which she recently attended in Dubbo. “ There were a large number of members in attendance to listen to the French ambassador, His Excellency PierreAndre Imbert, give his address,” Helen said.

“He talked about some of F r a nc e ’s c u lt u r a l ach ievements du r i ng its diverse history and the upcoming Olympic Games t o be held i n Paris. He mentioned the fact that France produces 1000 varieties of cheese and is wel l k now n for its gastronomic achievements. “ Va r iou s s p e a ker s gave a n i nsight i nt o the culture and history of th is i nteresti ng country. Art historian and author, Dr Susan Steggall talked about her life in Haute-Savoie, a depa r tment i n the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, bordering both Switzerland and Italy, and Ruth Shanks, former AC W W world president, presented a wonderful illustrated talk on the handicrafts of France.”

A g r icultural and environmental officer, Louise Press informed members that the competition for primary school ch i ld ren f rom kindergar ten to year three was a colouringin stencil and a short story (200-400 words) for students in years four to six. She also provided some i n formation on microbats, the study animal for 2024.

Microbats “ M icrobats a re the only mammals capable of f ly ing a sustained distance and there are more than 60 different ty pes of M icrobats in Australia,” L ouise explained. “ The smallest microbat weighs only three grams, the largest, the carnivorous ghost bat , weighs just 15 0 grams. They move fast and are rarely seen or heard. You may be lucky to hear a White-striped Freetail Bat as it sends out its high-pitched echo-

location, which is one of the few bats that can be heard by humans.

“During summer and autumn, microbats go into a feeding frenzy as they fatten up on insects to help them survive the winter.

“Adult microbats feed on lawn g rub moths, weevils, caterpillars, beetles, midges, flying termites, mosquitoes and other insects. They can eat as much as 40 per cent of their own body weight in a single night or several hundred insects per hour. Once the n ights become cooler and the insects

disappear, they lower their body temperature and go into a state of mini hibernation until their food returns in spring.

“Many of our microbat species are hollow dependent, which means they l ive du r i ng the daylight hours inside the hollows of trees or branches. Competition f rom bi rds, possums and gliders, along with the clearing of many old trees, means that m i c r o b at s m ay f i nd t he r o of or wa l l s of your home the perfect roosting place.

I n t he h a nd i c r a f t competition, Baradine member Brenda Croxon took out the over-80’s trophy for the second year in a row. Two of her items, a beautiful handembroidered box and a little teddy bear were chosen to go to state for judging.

Bringing the country to the city Residents hailing from various corners of the Warrumbungle Shire showcased their talents on the city stage as they competed in the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

A lthough not every entr y was a success, ma ny fou nd a new sense of confidence and motivation to work hard for the next year.

T h e S y d n e y R oya l Easter Show c omp et it ion s a i m t o honou r the trad ition o f lo c a l a g r i c u lt u r e and produce markets around Australia and recognises innovative growth.

To win at the Sydney Royal Show is a high level achievement and is a testament to the diligence, skill and hard work of competitors.

Competitors at every level are encouraged to compete and feedback is granted to all those who enter.

Coonabarabran High School Year 12 student, Emily Larkin, followed her passion of realistic drawing to the Sydney

Royal, after winning the People’s Choice Award at the Binnaway Show.

Judges awarded her second place in the open drawing category, where s he wa s up a g a i n s t individuals with years of experience.

“I learnt that art can be rea l ly subje ctive.

Making an artwork with more meaning appeared to resonate better than s ome ot her s , i n t he judges’ eyes ,” Em i ly said. “ T he de t a i l I c a n achieve is one of the things I enjoy the most about drawing. I love seeing how an outline can then become a realistic portrait. It feels like a real achievement.”

Emily said she will continue to share her a r t i n c omp e t it i o n s throughout the year.

Sig nif icant awards were also won by sisters, Teagan and Seona Chapman, daughters of Pau l a nd K at ie Chapman, who paraded their steers and were successful in the hook categories.

In her fourth year of competing at the Sydney Royal, Teagan and her

steer, ‘G oof y ’, won a silver medal on the hook and secured sixth place in his hoof class.

Seona, competing for the first time, also won a silver medal in the hoof category.

The Chapman sisters represented their boarding school, Scots A ll Saints College in Bathurst, contributing to the school’s success, in multiple categories, with their 24 steers.

Even butchers were successful at the Royal, as Warrumbungle Meats was presented with the opportunity to purchase stock in the beef sections of the show.

Local abattoir owners, Craig Harris and George Giovas, purchased the st o ck t o suppor t H a m i s h Fau c hon i n his Young Auctioneers Competition.

as their youngest female, Alice, won first prize at the Bitch Challenge.

Mrs Folli had attended dog shows at the Sydney Royal for over 12 years and knew what characteristics the judges were looking for in her Pomeranians.

“They are meant to be square, buoyant, have their tail up and over their back and they are said to be extroverts,” Mrs Folli said. “ We love g oi n g t o t he s how for t he camaraderie. In the end it doesn’t matter who wins, we feel like we all get to take the best dog home.”

There were many more entries and local success stories from the Sydney Royal and the common theme for all competitors was their hard work and commitment t o thei r passions.

Being able to stand i n f r ont of a judge c a n b e c o n f r o nt i n g , however, ever yone who competed in their chosen categories found the courage to showcase their talent and grow their skill sets.

Following Emily Larkin’s People’s Choice Award win at the 2024 Binnaway Show, the year 12 student took out second place in the open drawing category at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for her illustration.

Helen and Peter Waters had a nice day catching up with friends and supporting the #doitforcancer fund-raiser.

CJC vice president Brad Edwards was on hand to congratulate jockey Chelsea Ings, winner of race one, and thank Coonabarabran Automobile Society president Gary Baglee, with wife Pam, for its sponsorship of the race.

Representing the local Cancer Support Group was its lovely president, Nicole Hadfield, who provides information and support to those going through the cancer journey.

Visiting friends and frocking up for the races were Blythe Stranger, of Barraba, and Edwina Knight, Manilla.

Drinking in success: container recycling hits record high Warrumbungle Shire Council’s container deposit scheme celebrates 10 million containers returned, while NSW celebates 11 billion in total!

In a significant milestone for environmental s u s t a i n a b i l i t y , W a r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e’ s container deposit schem e ha s ach i eved t h e re m a r ka b l e fe at of collecting and recycling 10 million containers.

Since the establishment of the container deposit stations in Coonabarabran and Dunedoo in 2 0 1 9, t h e c o m m u n i t y has wholehear tedly embraced the initiative, contributing to its resounding success.

W a r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e C o u n c i l m a y o r, Cr Ambrose Doolan, expressed his delight at the achievement.

“This is a wonder ful achievement for not only our Warrumbungle waste team, but the community that is making the most of this great ser vice,” Cr Doolan said.

“The collection of these containers not only helps the community, but also

the environment with less waste going into landfill.”

The success of the initiative underscores the community’s commitment to sustainabilit y and responsible waste management practices.

Pa r tici pation i n the ‘Return and Earn’ program is simple and accessible to a l l membe r s of the community.

R e s i d e n t s a r e e n co u ra g e d to co l l e ct eligible bottles and cans a nd ta ke them to the designated return points at t h e Co o n a b a ra b ra n landfill or Dunedoo transfer station.

Every eligible container retur ned entitles the depositor to a refund of 10 cents, providing both an incentive for recycling and a tangible benefit to participants.

To e n s u re ef f i ci e nt processing, it is essential for participants to follow guidelines, including pack i ng g l as s p roducts

separately in designated b a g s a n d a d h e r i n g to maximum quantity limits per bag.

This ensures the smooth operation of the scheme and facilitates effective recycling processes.

“Council is thrilled with community participation in this scheme over the last five years,” Cr Doolan said. “ We a p p r e c i a t e t h e community’s cooperation when depositing conta i ne r s at Counci l sites.”

The milestone is also part of a broader success story fo r re c yc l i n g i n i t i at i ve s across NSW. Ret u r n a n d E a r n, t h e ove ra rching p rog ram encompassing the container deposit scheme, recently celeb rated a m o n u m e nta l m i l e s to n e of 11 b i l l i o n co nta i n e r s returned since its inception in 2017.

With its enduring success, Return and Earn stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

As the scheme continues to g r o w a n d evo l ve, i t reinforces the importance of co l l a bo rat i ve ef fo r t s b e t w e e n g o v e r n m e n t, industry, and communities in creating a more susta i nable futu re fo r generations to come.

Sam Brown: We have heaps of bottles we need to recycle at the pub. We used to chuck them out, but we know it is good for the environement to recycle. Undecided what we will do with the money yet, it could be something fun!

Helen Innis: My husband does. We think it is a good thing to do, not because we need the money or anything. It can be hard when travelling as we end up with bags and bags.

Jewel Toynton and Nolene Gale: Just been to the dump, they are snowed under, cans are everwhere. Someone came in with 8000 the other day. They said you can fit about 400 in those bags they give you – and they had a lot!

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Coonabarabran High On 3 April 3, Year 12 English studies students f rom C oonaba rabra n High School undertook an enriching educational journey to Gunnedah.

Commencing their d ay w i t h a t h o u g h t provoking brainstorming session at Pensioner ’s Hill L ookout, students devised queries to engage w i t h t h e a n t i c i p at e d guest speakers later in the day. This intellectual wa rm-up was followed by a delectable repast at a local Korean barbecue establishment.

The culinary adventure proved to be a delight for the st udent s , who unan imously favou red Korean F r ied Chicken ( K FC) and Korean pancakes. Subsequently, t h e y we r e p r i v i l e g e d t o l i s t en t o p oi g n a nt narratives from two distinguished representatives of the Gunnedah Multicultural Women’s A s s o c i at ion , h a i l i ng f r om F iji a nd Chile, respectively.

Among the excursion’s

highlights was Charlie’s valiant attempt to conquer excessively spicy cuisine, eliciting both laughter and admiration. Additionally, Charlotte distinguished herself with her insightful i nqu i r ies, ga r ner i ng

Coonabarabran Public praise from peers and speakers alike.

U n d o u b t e d l y, t h e excursion proved to be a reservoir of cultural enlightenment and indelible memor ies for a l l pa r ticipa nts.

Through engaging with diverse perspectives and i ndu lg i ng i n cu l i na r y delights, students not only broadened their horizons but also fostered deeper connections within their cohort.

Tooraweenah Preschool We loved celebrating Easter at our combined Easter celebrations with Tooraweenah Public School, choosing one of our favourite stories, “Whitney and Britney, Chicken Divas” to perform.

We made our crowns and props and practiced our story, with extra singing and dancing in it (so we could rock everyone’s socks off). After telling this story, we had fun at the Easter Hat Parade and Easter Egg Hunt with friends from Tooraweenah Public School!

We have loved having Miss Kristy start at preschool in the educator position permanently and together we have all had fun playing and getting to know each other.

With our tent inside,

we had fun camping by the creek and fishing (a magnetic game), before adding a campfire so we could cook our catch. This all came from the children sharing their ideas and telling us stories of what they have done when they have been camping.

We also found some sausages and eggs (from the home corner) that we cooked on the campfire, and even the dolls had fun fishing and bushwalking on our holiday adventures.

Friends have been very busy investigating magnets and magnetics through different items each week and, of course, the magna-tiles construction is a standard experience on offer as we all enjoy that. Friends have been busy building

sheds and stables and lots of structures for the farm machinery and farm animals that are also standard experiences readily available to the children.

We’ve been practicing our emergency drills and our fire-safety messages of ‘Stop, Drop, and Roll’ if our clothes are on fire and “Get down low and go, go, go” if the room is full of smoke.

And we all know the safety number of ‘Ready, Set, Go, 000”. We taught our families these important things for our ‘homework’.

Easter fun including playing with Easter ‘toys’, the wind up ‘jumping’ eggs and bunnies, and lots of sorting and classifying with the different sized and coloured ‘eggs’ that we could mix and match,

even adding some egg cups and egg trays to the fun as well! The funny Easter sunglasses and headbands also added fun to our dressups, and our imaginations went wild with fun stories and adventures with these characters.

We are now getting ready for ANZAC Day and our combined performance with Tooraweenah Public School students at the community service. We are always very honoured to be able to perform at such an important community event and show our respect at the service through this performance and also when laying our wreaths and joining in the parade to the park.

We wish everyone a safe and happy school holiday break.

Recently, on a warm day in Gunnedah, Will Weatherall and Sophia Leedham represented our Zone at the North West tennis trials.

The competition was fierce, and both Sophia and Will played exceptionally wel l a nd thorough ly enhanced their skill level.

Unfortunately, they did not gain selection in the North West team, but both gained both confidence and tennis expertise from this wonderful experience.

We were understandably proud of them both.

In other sporting achievements, a number of students attended the Zone cricket trials recently held at our very own sports ground in Coona. After many hours of batting, bowling and practicing o u r s k i l l s at c r i c k e t enthusiastically, Hudson was selected and recently completed at North West.

Despite the torrential rain causing the trials t o be held i ndo or s i n Tamworth, Hudson played exceptionally well and did us all proud. What a sporting champ is our Hudson.

Special thanks to Mr Willoughby who ran the trials, his expertise and enthusiasm is such an asset. It was fantastic to see so many students try their hardest and exhibit such wonderful sportsmanship behaviours.

More recently, a small group of students travelled all the way to Inverell with Ms Hawkins and Mr Robinson for touch football.

Our team of girls played hard and showed their strength and resilience, playing six rounds without a substitution.

The boys also played ha rd , c ombi n i ng w ith Coolah, to have Hudson Jenner and Wi l l iam Birtles selected in the possibles and probables.

Staff were very proud of the high standard of play and safe respectful e x e mpl a r y b e h av i o u r

our students displayed t h r o u g h o u t t h e d a y.

Congratulations to our touch football teams.

A thrilling and very ent er ta i n i ng pa r t of our week was the drivethrough breakfast visit from the Variety Club Bash. Every couple of years this wacky, colourful and enormously entertaining procession entertain us

with their decorated cars and fancy-dress costumes.

We look forward to these fantastically fun visits.

This visit, they gave us not just the opportunity to apply for a big grant, but a fabulous toy donation which our creative and learning-focused principal has made as a creativewriting prize.

The staff and students of St Lawrence’s remembered the events of Holy Week during our Lenten Liturgy l a s t T hu r s d ay i n t he church.

Holy Week is the most important week of the church’s year, and is the final stage on the journey to Easter. We remember the suffering and death of

Jesus Christ.

K indergarten, Years 1 and 2 recalled the day Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey as the people waved branches to welcome him.

VIEW CLUB NEWS T h is month at the Coonabarabran VIEW Club meeting, we had an excellent attendance and an excellent meeting.

Sherree Conn reported on the delegates’ meeting in Gunnedah, she had attended ea rlier t h at s a me d ay, a nd enlightened us on all information from the national minutes.

One concern was the

inability to pay some accounts by cheque, i.e. the post office box.

International Women’s Day featured a guest, Kimberley, who spoke on how her two daughters have benef itted from scholarships through the Learning for Life pr og r a m . K i mb erley s a id she wa s h appy that her girls now have everything they need for

school.

Another guest speaker was Lucy Gallagher – a voice for Mental Health on the Land. Lucy is a Manilla farmer and believes that education, and lots of it, is the answer to many problems.

“There is no straight line where we take off from. There is no level play i ng f ield , wher e everyone gets a crack at

the finish line,” she said.

“We all need to speak for ourselves, and for those who cannot. We are stronger than we think; we should choose courage over comfort.”

Lucy was an excellent speaker.

POLICE NEWS A man has been charged on multiple Domestic Violence accounts.

VIEW co-presidents, Carolyn Fretwell and June McWhirter, chair the recent meeting.

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District attended a home in Coonabarabran on Friday, 5 April, in relation to a domestic violence incident.

A 33-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by a man known to her and police commenced an inquiry into the incident.

Around 10am the same day, police were patrolling Coonabarabran and the same man was seen walking along King Street.

He was arrested and taken to Coonabarabran Police Station where he was charged with destroy or damage of property (DV), stalk/intimidate with the intention to fear and physically harm (DV).

He was also charged with the intention to choke a person without consent (DV).

The man appeared at Dubbo Local Cour t on Monday, 8 April, 2024 where he was formally refused bail.

He will reappear in court on Thursday 23 May, 2024.

WEATHER WATCH The first week of April h a s b e en not ewor t hy for heavy rainfalls, at first in central Victoria a nd G ipp s l a nd , w it h Melbourne and suburbs recording their wettest April day since 1977.

Wilsons Promontory, with 116mms in two days, had its heaviest April rains since 1901.

This occurred after the driest-ever February to March period in 183 years of records in Melbourne and at many other places nearby.

Soon after, a complex, active low pressure formed just off the Queensland and NSW coast, bringing widespread heav y r a i n f a l l s w it h m aj o r flooding at some towns.

The heaviest rainfalls were recorded at Penrith, 254mms, Gosford, 245mms, and Port Macquar ie ,261mms – the wettest start to April since 1963.

Rainfalls were light to moderate further west into our region, the heaviest gauging being 67mms at Moree, which had already experience well-aboveaverage rainfall for April – and the wettest start to April since 1988.

Further north, G oond iw i nd i recorded 136mms in three days,

the wettest for April also since 1988.

Over in the Kimberley r e g ion of We s t er n Australia, Broome, after a very dry December to February period of only 23mms, recorded wellabove-normal rainfall of 140mms during March.

T he December to February period of 198788 was also very dry at Broome, then heavy rain fell during March 1988.

A l ice Spr i ngs, w ith 2 2 6m ms , h a s h ad it s wettest March since 1988.

The rest of 1988 was rather wet, with a mild, wet winter and an early spring.

October 1988 was dry and hot, but November and December 1988 were both very wet, particularly in Victoria Ca r na r von, i n the Gascoyne region of WA, r e c or de d a m a x i mu m t emperatu re of 4 0.6 degrees on Wednesday, 3 April, one of the hottest April days in over 115 years of records.

Other very hot April days were in 1910, 1911, 1928, 1937, 1958, 1998 and 2017. The majority of these did lead to a wetterthan-average year in our region.

WEDNESDAY GOLF It is wonderful to see Lou Coulton playing 18 holes again after her painful accident.

We a l s o wel c ome d Julie Shinton, who joined us for a few holes, testing her knee after recent surgery.

Julie hit the ball quite well and declared that she should be back very soon to play competition golf.

The stroke event played on Wednesday, 3 April, brought a good number of competitors to the course. The weatherman gave us a chilly start, but we soon warmed up with sunshine and a mild breeze. T he fair ways were not too bad, a bit hairy, but with a ground sta f f shor tage and mechanical breakdowns, we managed to return some reasonably good scores.

The winner on the day was Jane McW hi r ter with a net 76, closely followed by Jason Mills with a net 78.

Lou Coulton won a ball for her net 80.

Ken was a staunch Magpies supporter, talented player, and former club president. Ken was a member of the famous Western Division side that won the coveted AMCO Cup in 1974, defeating the Penrith Panthers 6-2 in the final of the 21-team competition.

Something for everyone to enjoy at the Gunnedah Show Gunnedah Show is less than a week away and it is promising to be an action-packed weekend for everyone.

The show is the weekend of April 12 to 14 and it is has a jampacked programme.

This year the key entertainment attractions will be the camel racing, roving entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display

which will light up the Gunnedah night sky.

Other highlights are the animal nursery which opens Friday at 11am and Saturday at 9am.

Rodeo events will be held on the Saturday starting at 12pm, with the main performance at 4pm.

Fresh from his Australian Idol audition, local legend Sam Snape will perform at the show bar in

the evening.

The dinosaur races are sure to be a hit on Saturday night and round out the entertainment offering.

As usual, there will be a variety of food vendors to cater for a range of tastes at this year’s show.

For the equine enthusiasts, there will be plenty of opportunities for some spectacular viewing

of horses in action.

Being an agricultural show, animals of all shapes and sizes will be on display, from cattle to lambs, chicken and poultry to the animal nursery and the pet show, ensuring family fun and a platform to showcase the best examples of various breeds.

The Griffith Pavilion will also be a hive of activity, with a fine

display of children’s art, cooking and preserves just to mention some of the home-made goods and crafts which will be on show.

There is also spectacular art and photography created by talented locals as well as trade displays.

Side show alley is sure to please the kids, with the bright lights, fun games, rides and showbags guaranteed to be a hit.

Camel racing set for a comeback at the show The Gunnedah Show Society is delighted to announce the eagerly awaited return of camel races at the 2024 Gunnedah Show, scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Saturday, April 13, in the main arena.

After a hiatus, camel races are set to make a grand comeback, promising thrills, laughter, and unforgettable entertainment. The Show Society already has some local jockeys signed up, but we also invite some more locals to join the camelry.

“We are thrilled to bring back the beloved camel races to the Show,” says Caroline Mitchell, convenor of entertainment.

“Camel races were a cherished tradition of the show in the 90s, and we are excited to revive this exhilarating spectacle for our community."

Mitchell further encourages individuals with vibrant personalities to saddle up and take part in the camel races.

“If you know someone in your business or community who has what it takes, we want to see them on the back of a camel. If you can ride a horse, you can ride a camel.”

Camel racing enthusiasts will witness three heats followed by a final, adding an extra layer of excitement.

Mitchell emphasises the historical significance of camel racing, stating, “Camel racing holds a significant place in history, with its origins tracing back to the early Islamic period in the seventh century. While it is a serious international sport in some countries, camel races in Australia have had a rich history since the late nineteenth century.”

Kicking off at 9am near the South Street gate entrance, utes from near and far will muster for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie.

Judging will commence at noon, with participants showcasing their vehicles and vying for top honours in various categories.

“All utes will go in the grand parade at approximately 2pm, adding an extra layer of excitement and atmosphere,” added Kelly.

“It's a fantastic opportunity for people to see these incredible vehicles up close and in action.”

Following the grand parade, prizes will be presented in the main arena, and the grand champion ute will be announced for 2024.

“We can't wait to see them (and hear them!) at the show this year,” remarked Kelly, echoing the anticipation felt by many.

Project Pathfinder launch celebrated in Moree The NSW government is continuing work to provide diversionary pathways for ‘at risk’ young people across NSW, with the launch of Project Pathfinder last week in Moree.

Project Pathfinder is a partnership between the NSW Police Force, National Rugby League (NRL) and Youth Justice NSW, and will provide at risk teenagers from regional areas with mentorships and opportunities to reach their potential.

The program will see young people provided with unique access to the NRL environment and an NRL mentor to support and engage with their families.

Three teenagers from Bourke, Lightning Ridge and Moree have recently completed the pilot program and will be recognised for their selection and efforts at the program launch today. They have already met their mentors, set goals with appointed NSW

Police Force Youth Engagement Officers and attended last month’s NRL Multicultural Round.

Following the launch, the NRL hosted a skills clinic for local Moree public schools at Boughton Oval, with the help of NRL and NRLW players Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Quincy Dodd and Rhiannon Byers.

Premier Chris Minns said Project Pathfinder is an innovative example of how the government can work with community partners to support young people stay on the right track and pursue their goals.

“I commend the young people who have already commenced in the program for their dedication and hard work so far.

“Sport is an invaluable tool in a young person’s life which teaches them vital lessons about teamwork and leadership,” Mr Minns said.

“I want to thank the NRL for their partnership with the NSW Government on this program, and for the time their players are dedicating to provide mentorship to our state’s young people.”

NSW Police Commissioner, Karen Webb said policing in regional communities is not just about reducing crime, it’s also about prevention.

“Being part of diversionary program like Project Pathfinder allows police to connect with young people and help them reach their potential,” Comm Webb said.

“NSW Police are pleased to partner with organisations like the NRL to engage young people in regional areas and it’s projects like this that can highlight the many opportunities and pathways open to them.”

Adam Marshall to resign in May State Member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall has announced the end of his almost 20 years in public office and his intention to resign from the NSW Parliament in May. Mr Marshall first entered public office serving on Gunnedah Shire Council.

He was then elected to parliament in May 2013, representing communities in the New England and North West regions.

Announcing his decision to resign from politics last week, Mr Marshall said he will

formally hand his resignation to the Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly on May 13.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my years in public life serving the communities of Gunnedah Shire and now the people of the Northern Tablelands, as a Councillor, Mayor, State MP and a Minister.

“Their support for me has been overwhelming and heart-warming. It’s been an honour and a privilege to serve rural communities and country people and I thank them sincerely for that opportunity over the last two decades.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that despite absolutely loving our region, its people and my role as a local State MP, I cannot put this move off any longer. This will be the end of representative politics for me.

“While there will be plenty of time for reflection over the next five weeks and beyond, for me,

I’m firmly focussed on the work I still have to do, which I intend to carry out with the same enthusiasm and energy as I always have.”
