Local Gover nment Week presents a unique opportunity for councils th roughout NSW to spotlight their extensive ar ray of ser vices and initiatives that extend well beyond traditional functions such as roads, rates, and waste management.

It serves as a platform for residents to explore and app reciate the

b readth of ser vices available to them and to actively engage in local decision-making processes. Unity staff expressed their desire to fur ther s u p p o r t t h e i r c l i e nt s in becoming more physically and socially active, highlighting the

numerous benef its of doing so.

U n it y Aus t ra l i a h a s successfully hosted five similar mini-groups locally this year, with more planned. This i n itiative has been emphasised since COVI D, a t i m e w h en social isolation for the elderly peaked due to heav y restr ictions on visitations in aged-care facilities, staff shortages, and a general increase in mental-health issues among the elderly.

IN FOCUS: 2024 PARIS OLYMPICS

From Dunedoo to Paris Dunedoo has made it to Paris, with local boccia player Jamieson Leeson proudly representing her town and country at the 2024 Paris Paralympics this month.

Diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy when she was 18 months old, Jamieson has proving a ny t h i n g i s p o s s i b l e, making her Paralympic d e b u t i n To k yo 2 0 2 0 a f te r o n l y a y e a r o f competing in Boccia.

B o c c i a w a s introduced to the Paralympics in 1984, and i s played by ath letes with a significant p hy s i ca l i m p a i r m e nt affecting all four limbs.

Boccia is played indoors and tests co m p et i to r s’ m u s c l e control and accuracy, w ith competito r s i n wheelchairs.

Athletes throw, kick, or use a ramp device to propel six red or blue leather balls as close as possible to a white ball called the ‘jack’.

Ath l etes compete in singles, pairs and teams’ events, and is a mixed-gender event.

Leeson described “in the country there’s no Pa ra - s po r t, l et a l o n e Boccia. I would have to travel two hours to O range and only did that a few weekends because it wasn’t a very big club.”

I n 2 018 s h e wa s scouted from a school to u r n a m e n t, a n d by

2019 Leeson was at her first international event.

In 2020, in the middle of COV I D, s h e wa s p re p a r i n g fo r To k yo, a n d c o m p l et i n g h e r HSC through Dunedoo Central School.

To d a y, J a m i es o n i s studying a Bachelor of E co n o m i c s a t t h e University of NSW, and has made her name as the youngest person to represent Australia in Boccia.

Beside teammate David M ichel, suppo r ted by ramp operators Ash Maddern (Michel) and Jasmine Haydon (Leeson), they a re cu r re nt l y ra n ke d number one in mixed pairs.

For Jamieson, going to Paris is the ability to “share the word about disabled sports and so much about Boccia b e ca u s e i t i s s u c h a small sport.”

Her shor t term goal i s to “ s ta r t a c l u b to hopefully get some new players” and in the long term she is hoping to “make a difference in the country and get out to regional areas.”

Jamieson is proving a ny t h i n g i s p o s s i b l e, and has become a shining star of Dunedoo.

The seed has been planted A group of local gardeners is sending out an SOS – that’s ‘Save Our Seeds’ – with a vision to develop a seed library to benefit the community.

by JAYNE MURPHY O n S a t u r d a y, 2 7 July, around 20 people w it h a n i nt e r e s t i n horticulture and susta i nable l iv i ng gathered at the Coonabarabran CWA hall to hear gardening enthusi ast s L i zz ie Bennetts and Jaimee Brent talk about t hei r v i s ion fo r t he Coonaba rabran Seed Library and how anyone can help with the project rega rd less of thei r s k i l l s or ex p er ienc e with gardening.

The library will be l o c at e d i n g i f t a n d clothing shop, T he Lighthouse, in a chest of d r awer s t h at h a s be en r ef u rbi shed by Men’s Shed volunteers wh o ad d e d s e c t i o n s for filing envelopes of seeds.

The Rotary Club has a s si st e d w it h st a r t up funds and now the community is invited to contribute seeds saved from their own garden – or donate packets of unused seeds.

Vo lu nt e e r s w i l l also be required to categorise, label a nd s or t s e e d s i nt o envelopes for storage.

Once the collection is established, people will be able to access seeds

for free for use in their own gardens. At this stage, the focus is on vegetable seeds.

A s i d e f r o m encouraging gardening and community i nt eraction , a seed library has the potential t o develop i mpr oved plants.

“Every area has its own unique conditions and if we harvest and grow out seed from our s t r on g e s t pl a nt s we can get genetics that are more resilient to our local climate which means stronger plants and better harvests,” Ms Brent said.

The event at the CWA h a l l enc ou raged the sharing of gardening tips and learning from others’ experiences of saving seeds.

Samples of vegetables and seeds were available for attendees to examine as well as the basic equ ipment required to wash, dry, sort and store seeds.

Struggle street – navigating the roads to disability support Are people living with a disability in rural communities falling through the gaps?

by GEORGIA SPENCE F o r t h e p a s t t h re e years, Angela Page has been concerned about her parents’ safety and comfort as they await renovations from NDISapproved builders to m a ke t h e i r h o m e suitable to live in.

I n the meanti me, her parents face homelessness since their rental property has been put up for sale.

Cu r rently, Angela’s parents, Jim and Jeneen Hand, live along a fire trail through a national park.

Angela said a fourwheel drive was needed for the isolated roads and her parents could n ot g et to tow n i f i t rained.

A carer comes once a week and if they do

not show up, Mrs Hand’s hyg iene and health needs are not met.

The family has found a house i n B i nna way to move into, but the bathroom requires modifications and the door ways need to be widened to a c c o m m o d a t e Angela’s mother and her walker.

After a tragic incident, Angela’s mother suffered a brain injur y and is unable to care for herself, having reverted to the cognitive state of a toddler.

She is also too large to walk by herself, or pick herself up if she falls and relies on her 83-year-old husband, Jim, as her fulltime carer.

Three years ago an application was made, requesting NDIS-

approved bui lder s to renovate thei r new home, however, after years of trying, no action had been taken.

Although Angela understands the cu r rent sho r tage of trades persons, she was frustrated at the lack of support for people living with a disability in rural towns.

“The matter is extremely urgent and I think it is a rural issue,” Angela said.

“I used to work with NDIS so I know what is available to people, but I also admit it could be a number of other things.

“We need Mum closer to town and resources. If Dad is incapacitated, he can’t do the essentials.

He doesn’t even have a car suitable to get her in and out of.

“It’s like they are living in a third-world country and it is tragic and depressing.”

For Angela, it felt like h e r M u m wa s fa l l i n g through the gaps.

“It could be a lack of resources, or it could be a lack of persistence on our end. Whatever the reason, no one should suffer like this,” she said.

After contacting the Coonabarabran Times, a builder has been finally been secured to renovate the new home.

Currently, Mr and Mrs Hand a re wa iti ng fo r renovations to begin on their new home. They h a ve b e e n i nfo r m e d that a builder would be available by the end of June, or the start of July.

After three years, Mr Hand said he would not “put all his eggs in one

basket” and was tired of struggling.

“We just don’t know if anyone will turn up,” Mr Hand said.

“After three years of nothing happening, I’m now too old to do the things I was once able to do. I just need to get Janeen into that new house. I’m not sure what we will do if we can’t.”

Whi le they await a b u i l d e r, M r a n d M r s Hand will continue to struggle with everyday tasks, due to a lack of access to daily care.

Once they are closer to town, accessing daily resources and care for Mrs Hand will be easier.

The fami ly hopes t h e i r s to r y ca n h e l p others who have fallen through the gaps of the healthcare system.

Althea Catts: I haven’t had any trouble.

Peter Ryan: We have had troubles and I’m not the only one. It’s been a struggle for us from day one, whether it be tradies, mechanics etc. It’s like they run on their own time.

A complete lack of customer service.

Paul and Carole Hunt: Overall, we haven’t struggled too much. There was an instance where we couldn’t find a tradie, but our friend gave us another number.

School unveils sign RED CROSS NEWS of respect In the spirit of reconciliation, a Baradine school has unveiled a welcome sign acknowledging the building is situated on Gomeroi country.

P roceedings i n c lude d a smok i n g ceremony followed by the sign unveiling by Pat M adden , deput y chair of the Baradine Local Aboriginal Lands Council (LALC) board of management.

S chool pr incipa l, Margaret McKinnon said the sign, which features the image of a sa nd goanna, was designed through a consultation process with First Nation students and members of the Baradine LALC. “The Baradine LALC has suppor ted ou r endeavour from the start with helpful instruction, clarification and advice,” Mrs McKinnon said. “ In August last year we discussed how best to reflect that our s cho ol i s lo c at ed on Gomeroi land. Through discussion we were able to confirm that the totem of the sand goanna is an important part of the local Aboriginal culture.

“We wanted the sign t o be a g reeti ng, so the Gamilaraay word ‘Yaama’, for hello, was the obvious choice to be included.

“Aunty Robyn Ruttley c o n f i r m e d t h at o u r school sits on Gomeroi country and we sought perm ission f rom the LALC to base the design of the sand goanna on a painting which can be seen on the front of the LALC building in Wellington Street.

C r e at ion s , l a s er c ut the outline onto a steel panel and the sign was lo c at e d i n t he f r ont garden of the school. We thank Chris Wallis for the erection of the sign and Mrs Wallace, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander officer, for c o ord i n at i ng the

manufacturing process.

“We chose an unveiling ceremony as a symbolic act representi ng the revealing of memories and legacies from the past and the continuing culture of the Gamilaraay Nation here in Baradine.

“The sign is to serve as an ongoing focal point at

our school for the town and community.”

Students presented a delightful rendition of ‘Mirii-dhuul, mirriidhuul, ngandanganda’ (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Sta r) i n Gami laa ray language and the event concluded with cutting the 2024 NAIDOC cake.

The new welcome sign was unveiled by school captains Harriet and Page, with deputy chair of the Baradine LALC, Pat Madden.

A traditional Smoking Ceremony was held prior to the sign unveiling.

Coonabarabran Red Cross comprises of a small band of dedicated locals who meet once a month to discuss Red Cross in general, how to help with local needs, if any arise, and just generally socialise.

This past financial year members were active with attendance at the Town Promotion Expo, a Melbourne Cup afternoon tea, various morning teas held by

members, raffles and 100 Club at the Christmas Spectacular and for Mother’s Day. Trauma Teddies were needed at Gunnedah Hospital this year and we were able to supply the required amount.

We always need knitters to keep our supplies up ready for emergencies.

We have commenced this year’s fund raising with a Christmas in July luncheon and display of

nativities from around the world.

I would like to thank our small band of members for their support this past year and Coonabarabran in general for helping us to help not only Red Cross, but locals as well.

New rest stops Adequate rest stops along long stretches of highway in the bush are so important, which is why I’m pleased the Australian and NSW Governments are jointly f u nd i n g a n upg r ade to a rest stop on the K a m i l a r o i H i g hw ay between Walgett and Brewarrina.

T he $1 .75 m i l l ion u p g r a d e t o Ya m b i e Lagoon Rest Area, about 60 kilometres east of Brewarrina, will involve building toilet and shelter facilities as well as picnic tables and parking for heavy and light vehicles on both the eastbound and westbound shoulders.

T h is w i l l prov ide truck drivers, tourists and all road users with the opportunity to stop along this remote stretch of highway, helping to reduce driver fatigue and ensure they arrive at their destination safely.

I’m also excited that work has started on the new heavy vehicle rest area about 12 kilometres north of Narrabri on the Newell Highway.

will feature eight heavyvehicle parking spaces for short and long-term parking, 10 light vehicle and ca ravan-pa rk ing spaces for short-term pa rk i ng, ac cessible toilet facilities, a picnic shelter and solar lighting, rubbish bins, and tree planting and landscaping.

I personally saw a huge change in the health of the soil on my property as a result of using glyphosate and was able to retain important topsoil that would otherwise be lost.

Coona rolls out the red carpet for new residents This year’s ‘Hearty Welcome’ to Coonabarabran will be held on Sunday, 11 August from 11am-2pm at the town hall, connecting new residents with our community.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY T his will be the second year of the event, organised by the 2357 Development Group and championed by Narelle Pfeiffer.

S p e a k i n g t o 2 3 57 D evelopment Gr oup representative, Kalyna Sparks, she explained that “we were noticing lots of new faces around town, and in an effort to want to meet them, introduce them to locals and get them connected into the community, the event was born.”

With some community organisations active on social media, and others

less so, this initiative encou rages g roups, fami l ies, ind iv idua ls young and old, locals and new faces alike to get involved, and support initiatives that keep the town growing.

The inaugural event brought together sporting groups, social clubs, arts and crafts clubs, commun ity support organisations, s er v i c e g r oup s , a nd churches to showcase everything the community had to offer.

This year’s event aims to build on the previous success, with the goal of hosting it biannually, similar to Dubbo’s New

Resident Night, which is held every six months.

“This year, we hope to reinvigorate long-term residents and show them the amazing activities they can get involved in, Kalyna explained. “ S ome pe ople th i n k , ‘what is there to do in small country towns,’ but if you scratch the su r face, you’ l l f i nd something different to do every day and night of the week.”

As a part of the work to connect new and old residents alike, 2357 D evelopment Gr oup member, Cat Facchi, has been working to create an online archive of all

the active community groups with their contact details. “ This will hopefully become an easily ac c e s s i ble l i n k t h at residents and visitors a l i ke ca n lo ok up,” Kalyna said.

T h i s ye a r, 2 3 57 D e v e l o p m e n t Group members anticipate around 100 at t ende es , i nclud i ng representatives f rom the various groups and organisations.

There will be a lucky door prize, lunch, and l ight ref reshments provided, and everyone is invited.

Do you have a nickname? DP. How did you come to live in Coonabarabran? My parents own the flower far m, so seven years ago I decided to move up to Coonabarabran.

Where would people recognise your face from? The local Coonabarabran Show.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I didn’t really have any aspirations when I was a kid, I’ve just fell into whatever I have done.

What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had? Selling luxury boat advertising in the mid 2000s. I got to go on lots of super yachts and to all the boat shows around the country.

What’s one totally irrational fear you have? Snakes.

Do you have a favourite community event or group? The Coonabarabran Show.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? The community and the people.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Probably to fly, to take away the travel time from back and forth to Sydney.

Have you read any good books or watched any good movies lately? No, but I did just binge watch ‘Suits’ from start to finish.

What’s on your bucket list? 1. Visit Europe. 2. Drive a racing car.

You’ve had a stressful day – what is your way of winding down? Having a couple of beers.

Do you have a hidden talent? Or what is something people might not know about you? I can play the piano, which not a lot of people know.

How would your friends and family describe you in three words?

Organised, loyal , friendly.

Probably the 50s.

What are your favourite places to visit on a road trip? The outback and the coast.

When was the last time you had a good laugh? Last weekend, around the campfire.

What is the best advice you have been given? If you get an opportunity, take it.

What are your main responsibilities and duties?

My role involves planning, grants submissions, designing, and overseeing the implementation of various civil engineering projects. This includes infrastructure developments such as roads, footpaths, drainage systems, and public facilities. I collaborate with different departments, stakeholders, and contractors to ensure that projects meet both technical specifications and community needs.

How did you get started in Local Government?

My journey began with a strong foundation in civil and structural engineering. Upon completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, I embarked on a professional journey encompassing a range of complex infrastructure projects within the private sector in Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. To further enhance my expertise, I pursued a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering in the United Kingdom. Subsequently, I expanded my industry experience through roles in the private sector in Singapore and Australia. Seeking a more impactful career aligned with community development, I transitioned to the Local Government sector.

Warrumbungle Shire Council presented an ideal opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and challenging environment while delivering essential infrastructure projects for the region, which aligned perfectly with my career goals.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Local Government?

A career in Local Government is incredibly rewarding. If you’re passionate about making a tangible difference in your community, consider the following: • Develop a strong technical foundation – A solid understanding of engineering principles is essential for success in this field.

• Build strong communication and interpersonal skills – Effective communication is crucial for collaborating with colleagues, stakeholders, and the community.

• Cultivate a passion for public service – A genuine desire to serve the community is fundamental to a fulfilling career in Local Government.

• Be adaptable and open to learning – The Local Government landscape is constantly evolving, so staying updated with industry trends and embracing new challenges is key.

What do you enjoy most about working for Warrumbungle Shire Council?

Working for Warrumbungle Shire Council is incredibly fulfilling. The opportunity to contribute to the development and improvement of our region is immensely satisfying. I particularly enjoy the variety of projects and the chance to collaborate with a dedicated team. By delivering essential infrastructure and services, I am helping to build a stronger, more resilient community.

What motivates you to work in public service?

My motivation to work in public service stems from a deep-rooted desire to create positive change. The knowledge that my work directly impacts the lives of our residents is a powerful driving force.

What are your main responsibilities and duties?

I’m responsible for managing the organisation’s internal and external communications, as well as liaising with media agencies and State and Federal government agencies. Currently I am learning and acting in the role as Manager of Corporate Services which encompasses customer service, Service NSW, IT and communications to governance, risk, insurance and information management.

How did you get started in Local Government?

After completing a double degree in communications/public relations and business studies, I worked in the private sector in Sydney, before back-packing across the world. Returning to Australia I moved out to Coonabarabran and still really wanted to work in an organisation environment. I placed my name down for casual administration work at Council and now, after seven years, have moved through a number of positions and have found my passion again in communications.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Local Government?

Apply!!! Put your hat in the ring! It might not be your dream job where you start, but there is so much room for growth and development and lots of opportunities for career progression.

A career in Local Government is incredibly rewarding. Everyone is passionate about making a difference in the community and working with like-minded people who are part of the local community makes it fun to come to work.

What motivates you to work in public service?

Having a direct impact on our local communities is the main motivator working in public service. You get to see your hard work shape communities, but making our staff proud of what they do and their achievements known to the community is the most rewarding thing.

What are your main responsibilities and duties?

To maintain safe water for both communities to consume and use, by way of testing water and making sure it meets standards to a specific benchmark that has been provided by the EPA. I also maintain two sewer treatment plants in both Coolah and Dunedoo. These plants are to provide somewhere for the community’s waste water to be processed.

How did you get started in Local Government?

I started working in Local Government in a casual position as a cleaner and a bank teller, which then led me to the full-time position of treatment plant operator/bore operator.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Local Government?

Go for it! It’s stable, filled with great team mates and consistent.

What do you most enjoy about working for Warrumbungle Shire Council?

Have you seen this part of the world? It’s amazing! That is the biggest sell for this Shire – the fresh air and the communities.

What motivates you to work in public service?

Working in the public service provides a service to our local community. In saying that I guess it gives us an important responsibility in the community and a feeling of self-worth…and a reason to get out of bed every day.

As part of the Children’s Services team, I work at both Yuluwirri’s Bandulla Street campus, as well as at OOSH (Out of School Hours) in Robertson Street. My role is to educate children by playing and learning alongside them. It is also important to develop relationships with families and the community, providing a safe and happy place for all children to learn.

How did you get started in Local Government?

I saw an advertisement online and successfully applied for the position. I started at the beginning of the year.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in Local Government?

Give yourself time to get all of your credentials organised and in order.

What do you enjoy most about working for Warrumbungle Shire Council?

Being able to work with children and the higher wages are attractive, compared to other education services.

I put my name down for casual work and after three years of working casually across all different areas of Council, I applied for a Traineeship in Civil Construction where I progressed up the ladder.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Local Government?

Go for it! It is full of great opportunities and a lot of room to grow and develop your career.

I enjoy working and giving back to my local community directly.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Coonabarabran Public Term three at CPS started with a bang and the arrival of 25 Early Birds. What a busy and fun day they had. So many interesting and beneficial activities to participate in and so much stimulating play, we ran out of time to do everything.

On the Monday, our visitors went into the classrooms and worked with Lawries’ students.

On Tuesday, everyone went to the oval and

With National Pyjama Day on Friday, 19 July, Children’s Services celebrated all week across all centres with children and staff wearing their cosiest PJs, slippers and Oodies to help raise awareness of children living in foster care.

At Robertson Street Preschool (Monkey Room), the children continued their inquiry-based project investigating bugs, worms and insects.

Wearing their pyjamas, the children’s goal was to find as many worms as possible in the garden and add them to their worm farm. Working alongside each other, the preschoolers dug around in the outdoor area before they ‘struck gold’ in the rock garden. The children added 10 worms to the farm and are looking forward to checking on them regularly.

journey is being led by our newest friend, Sam, and his deep knowledge about bugs and insects.

During the past few weeks, the children have been sharing and building their own knowledge about minibeasts, specifically

those that are found in our outdoor play areas.

The preschoolers have been strengthening their STEM skills using magnifying glasses, microscopes, scales and rulers to investigate the creepy crawlies in our environments.

AROUND THE TRAPS WEEKEND GOLF Saturday, 20 July, the women were way too hot to catch, yet again.

Trish Lithgow took the win with 37 points, and following close behind were E Gardiner 36, K Christoff 33, S Agalidis and M Resch on a count back with 32.

On Sunday, a couple of the Coona team went to Coolah for their Open.

Zoe came equal second with 82 and a long drive, while Jason won the handicap with 75 net.

Stan also had a great day on the windy hill.

Thanks to Coolah for a great day.

On Saturday, 27 July, it was a wet start to the day and most players obviously took the opportunity to do jobs at

home by the looks of the numbers.

There were only five starters and the winner on a count back was Frank Nottle with 33.

Ball winners were P Cain and Zoe 30.

This weekend we head into the August Monthly Medal. Burmac has put some great prizes up for the day, so please come and support them. Tee off will be 11am and you need to stay around for the card draw.

We also have Karaoke on Saturday night, where Salty and Stass are first up with their duet, ‘I’m a Barbie Girl’. The bus will be running.

VETERANS’ GOLF Tuesday, 23 July The winner of the veterans’ golf competition played at the C oonaba rabran Golf Club on Tuesday, 2 3 J u l y, w a s B o b Guichelaar, with Steve Larance the runner-up.

Nearest the pins went to Bob Guichelaar, Mick Noy and Steve Larance.

John Davis won the long-putt competition.

It was a great day to play golf – thank you all who participated.

T wo of the g i rls, Lou Coulton and Trish Lithgow, returned very good scores of 42 points, with Lou winning on a count back.

Yesterday we played a stableford.

The ladies also competed for the Sally K night Memorial Trophy. It was expected t o be a pleasant day with a good roll up of competitors.

Under 13’s tag rack up the wins It was a successful weekend for Coonabarabran’s under 13’s league tag, winning both of their games against the Dunedoo/ Coolah team – 44-0 and 44-8.

Amazing results.

Team work and positive vibes got the job done, along with the ever-important weekly training sessions with coach, Rechelle Hynds.

Mia Freebairn has continued to step up her leadership on the field, with clear communication helping to guide the team along with setting up successful plays from her position as dummy half.

Our first receivers, Lyla McKernan and Kyra Stanton, have grown within their positions in both confidence and skill.

They have an important role and continue to step up.

Mahari Mitchell had a cracking game, defending hard and fast along with some fantastic runs.

Marni Stanton jumped into a new position this weekend and thrived.

You can always count of her to chase the ball down hard.

Gemma Wilkinson had some fantastic runs right through the defensive line.

Laicey Harris is stepping up each week and had some impressive runs and tags.

Memphis Pennicott, our fullback, had some incredible kicks and also worked some great tricks with dummy half, Mia, fooling the opposition.

Rubi Soussa, Elise Harris and Millie McDonough protected the wing and formed a great part of the attack when the ball game wide – couldn’t have done it without these girls.

Andrew Freebairn stepped in as coach this weekend as a one off for and he thought the girls worked together really well as a team and that made all the difference on the day.

“The girls should all be really proud and continue to back themselves and each other,” Andrew said.

“Keep turning up with a positive attitude and have fun. That’s what makes a winning side.”

Coonabarabran’s under 13’s league tag team, with fill-in coach, Andrew Freebairn, had a successful weekend, winning both their games by considerable margins.

Coolah Kangaroos keep Cup! The Coolah ‘Roos held off a formidable challenge for the Boronia Cup from the Cobar Roosters in their Castlereagh League round 13 blockbuster played on a heavy track at Coolah’s Bowen Oval last Saturday.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE The home side survived the clash to retain the silverware w i t h a h a r d f o u g ht 18 to 12 win over the R oosters, the v ictory not only meaning that they remain undefeated in season 2024, but it also assured them of the minor premiership and

subsequently the hosting rights to the major semi final on Saturday, 17 August.

While Coolah has the top spot on the ladder stitched up, the final pecking order of the top five is yet to be decided.

Junior Kookas shine at Gala Day On Sunday, 28 July, the Coonabarabran Kookas Junior Rugby Union Club hosted its annual Gala Day.

Clubs from across the Central Nor th m a d e t h e t r e k ove r for the day, as well as some extra clubs from the Western Plains zone including Coonamble, Wa l get t, Bou r ke and Gulargambone.

T h e J u n i o r Ko o ka s h a d p l a y e r s participating across all age groups including the under 6s, under 8s, under 10 s and under 12s.

The club is slowly but surely growing in

numbers and it’s great to see.

It was a fantas tic day of r ugby fo r the Coonabarabran Junior Kookas, and all of the par ticipating clubs, with many qualit y games of junior rugby played, NSW Rugby staff and club coaches held an excellent training session for the under 6s, while the canteen, Rotar y barbecue and coffee car ts were all in full swing, and beaming smiles could be seen on kids’ faces in every direction you looked!

Kookas bow out at Cumnock The Coonabarabran Kookas travelled to Cumnock last Saturday to play Molong in the minor semi-final, needing a win to stay in contention for the finals.

Molong was the first to score through a penalty goal to Wells, with Clifton equalling the score for the Kookas at 3 -3 some mi nutes later.

Senior Cougars pounce to victory in basketball grand final In an exhilarating finale to the Coonabarabran Basketball United Mixed Twilight Competition, the Senior Cougars clinched victory with a commanding performance, defeating Green FN with a final score of 64 to 50.

Key players from the Senior Cougars, included Emily Matthews and Shannon Oakes who delivered standout performances, making crucial plays that ultimately secured their win. The team’s defensive prowess and offensive efficiency were evident throughout the game, highlighting their dominance in the competition.

Green FN’s Koopa Thompson and Katrina Whittall also had great games.

Koopa Thompson was also commended by organisers on putting together his basketball team, which progressed through the games and battled it out against Beef Cheeks in the semifinal to secure a place in the grand final. “ K o o p a h a s shown resilience and persistence, making sure his team tried to respect everyone through the games,” Emmah Watton said.

Military museum opens

After nearly a decade of hard work, ample sweat, and a few trials and tribulations, the doors to Moree RSL Regional Military Museum were opened to the public for the first time last Friday.

The museum shares the former War Memorial Education Centre and old town library building with the Dhiiyaan Centre, and has been a work in progress for eight years.

The ‘soft’ opening was a long time coming, with Moree RSL SubBranch president John Williams welcoming visitors and guests, including Moree Plains Shire deputy mayor Susannah Pearse and Tourism Moree chair Vivien Clyne.

“We’ve been operational committee-wise for eight years. There’s been a few hiccups along the way, but we’re open at long last,” Mr Williams smiled.

“The hard work has been done by a core group of about five people, and it’s amazing what those people have achieved.

“I am absolutely thrilled. It’s so important we were given this space by the council, because it’s actually a war memorial building, built and paid for many years ago by the citizens of Moree,” Mr Williams said.

The museum currently exhibits more than 500 items as well as an extensive library holding 800 books.

“We have another 3000 books to catalogue, and another 500 exhibits in storage,” Mr Williams said.

Deputy mayor Susannah Pearse was mesmerised as she explored the museum.

“This is a phenomenal achievement, and demonstrates what community can do with a very small amount of money,” Cr Pearse said.

“To think this has all come

together with a grant that was under $100,000 is a real credit to the committee and the RSL subbranch. What they’ve done is amazing, and demonstrates the power of what can happen when a

community gets together.

“And what this committee has delivered is an impressive, regional facility that will not only benefit our community, but school and community groups from outside

The deputy mayor has close, family ties with the armed forces.

“I’m a daughter of two army officers,” Cr Pearse said.

“My father was a lieutenant-colonel who served in Vietnam and my mother was a captain in the Royal Women’s Australian Army Corps.

“My grandfather served in Papua New Guinea in World War II and my great-grandfather served in Gallipoli and the Somme, and was taken prisoner-of-war in France, so the respect and value I have for the defence force is in my breeding,” she said.

“As a former army brat I’ve got quite a soft spot for recognising the service of our defence force and I know the Moree plains and regional areas were well-represented in times of conflict.

“I think it’s appropriate we have this museum, and I think it’s a real testament to the committee and RSL Sub-Branch with what they’ve delivered,” Cr Pearse said.

Sub-branch president John Williams was a proud man on Friday.

He served his country in the Vietnam conflict and now, more than 50 years later, he is still serving his country and the community he loves.

“I went to Vietnam and served my time in the 5th battalion,” Mr Williams said.

“A lot of people didn’t like the idea of national service, but I felt I had a responsibility to the government and to the country, and that’s why I went.”

The proud Vietnam vet said the memories of all men and women who went to war need to be preserved.

“This museum is one way of achieving that – the memories have got to be kept alive for a long, long time,” Mr Williams said.

will be open to the public each Friday and Saturday between 10am to 4pm (Fridays) and 10am and 2pm Saturdays.

“We will try and make those days and hours ongoing,” Mr Brady said.

“Our first day wasn’t the official opening, only a soft opening at this stage. We hope to get a military dignitary to Moree later in the year to officially open the museum. We’re working on a date in September.”

After a wet start at the weekend, the first of Moree Plains Shire Council’s Transport for NSW Open Streets events finished Sunday afternoon with plenty of laughs, full bellies and happy children.

The Winter Festival on Balo Street, capped by another soul-stirring performance by Moree’s own Kyla-Belle, drew stall-holders, food vans, street musicians, balloonists and entertainers from across the region.

Free activities included ice-skating and mechanical snowboarding – first-time treats for many Moree kids.

The Moree Community Library was open throughout the festival, and offered quiet chill-out spaces for children and parents as well as activities and arts and crafts.

The two-day carnival was co-ordinated by Moree Plains Shire Council’s community development liaison officer, Jacqui Moore, who smiled skyward when sparkling winter sunshine appeared Sunday morning.

“I was dreading the weather (Saturday) but people still came out and stall-holders said they had a constant flow, even in the wet weather,” Ms Moore said.

“Sunday was really good, too, and people kept filtering through all day. Something like this is really good for Moree and it gives the kids something different to do.”

For many Moree kids, snow globes, snow-boarding and ice-skating were eye-opening

novelties.

“Most of the kids had never seen this sort of stuff, and there were a few busters down at the ice-skating,” Ms Moore laughed.

Council’s general manager Kelvin Tytherleigh said a wet, slow start made for a great finish.

“We made the call at about six o’clock Saturday morning to proceed, and it was the right call,” Mr Tytherleigh said.

“People still arrived on Saturday despite the rain and the stall-holders were all very happy.

They’ve done a massive trade and the ice-skating was very popular – there’s been a queue all day.

“The concert Saturday night was fantastic and the fire display was spectacular. We’re really happy with everything,” he said.

The Winter Festival was funded by an $8.7 million NSW government initiative promoting safe road closures.

More than 70 councils were funded to deliver about 140 street events across New South Wales.

“Our grants team applied for funding and council is very grateful for the funding we received,” Mr Tytherleigh said.

“We picked up a pretty good amount of money overall, and the Winter Festival is just one of the events we have planned.

“There will be different events right around the shire, not just in the Moree township, and we’ll start advertising those soon,” he said.

Much-loved Eulah Creek Vintage Machinery Day back this weekend

Friendly hospitality will again be on show for the return of the much-loved Eulah Creek Vintage Machinery Day and campoven cook-off.

The machinery day – which combines a country fair atmosphere, craft stalls, great food and fun for kids with vintage machinery demonstrations – is a popular fixture on the district calendar.

The Beulah Park Hall committee volunteers have been busy preparing the grounds and hall ready to welcome visitors to the festivities.

Cast iron chefs can put their skills to the test in the campoven cook-off on Saturday, August 3, with the celebrations continuing the next day, Sunday, August 4, for the vintage machinery day.

Novelty events are again planned for Saturday afternoon before the campoven cook-off food is served up in the evening.

There are prizes and trophies for open and junior Cast Iron Chef, Cast Iron Dessert Chef as well as open and junior billy boiling champions.

Spectators are also welcome to come along and enjoy dinner for $15 per person or $50 for a family of four.

Sunday will again feature vintage machinery as well as a large display of motorbikes and vintage cars. Market stalls will also be featured on the day. Machinery day inquiries can be made to Dave Morris 0427 005 559 and Bruce Evans 0428 500 857.

Entry to the machinery day costs $5 for adults and is free for children under 15 years of age. The two events are cash only (no EFTPOS available).

The annual festivities serve as the primary fundraiser for the Beulah Park Hall.

The campoven cook-off is a more recent addition to the Eulah Creek festivities and is held on the Saturday. Peter Chambers, Armidale formerly Narrabri, with Dave Larsen who was checking his curry entry for the camp oven cook-off in 2023.

Recognition for late World War II veteran A World War II veteran from Moree has been recognised for his military service during a special presentation recently.

Member for Parkes Mark Coulton presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Darryl Brady who accepted the certificate on behalf of his late father Edward Martin Brady.

“Certificates of Appreciation are just one way that the Australian government expresses its gratitude to those who have given so much in protecting our country’s interests and helping to restore and maintain peace around the world,” Mr Coulton said.

Lucena Deakin wins Gold for Australia – and Moree

The Athelite Australian Emus mixed 30s touch football team, starring Moree born-and-bred try-scoring machine Lucena Deakin, won Gold for Australia after beating New Zealand 10-9 in a heart-stopping final at the Open Touch World Cup in Nottingham, England.

“The team is on cloud nine right now,” Deakin beamed shortly after full-time.

“We are definitely walking with our heads held high, and are very proud human beings.”

Deakin grounded the ball three times, including a killer dive try.

To cap an amazing series, Deakin was presented the Coach’s Award, chosen by Athelite Australian Emus mixed 30s’ coach, Danny Goodwin.

“I’m lost for words,” Deakin said.

The Emus mixed 30s worked hard for 40 long minutes against a gallant kiwi outfit to scrape home by one point.

“What a bloody game,” Deakin said.

“New Zealand really know how to turn it on when the gold medal is up for grabs. Full ‘props’ to them – they are true professionals and took us on in great spirit.

“It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions coming into this final and there was nothing left on the table, or in the tank,” she said.

“I've never had to play under such intense conditions before, where we play with our hearts on our sleeves and dig deep for an outcome.

“The hardest part is keeping your

composure under such pressure – we did it though,” she smiled.

The one-pointer came after a week-long competition that saw Deakin’s team advance to the finals with wins against Wales (142), United States (17-2), Samoa (11-3), Hong Kong (21-nil), Germany (10-5), France (14-4), England (13-3) and Cayman Islands (17-nil).

After giving Chile a 15-0 drubbing in the quarter-finals and beating England 15-4 in the semis, the mixed 30s team met New Zealand to decide which side of the Tasman the cherished gold medals would find forever homes.

Deakin, a former St Philomena’s Catholic School student in Moree who later relocated to the Sunshine Coast with husband, Steve Gill and their children, threeyear-old Austin and one-year-old Florence, has been playing touch football since 2007.

“Steve has been an endless support. He holds down the fort when I’m participating in local competitions, or travelling for high-level competitions and weekend training camps,” Deakin said.

“If it wasn’t for Steve’s support, I would not be where I am today.”

Deakin plays with the Coolum Blue Fins Touch Football Association and was overwhelmed when she gained selection to represent Australia at the World Cup. “I would have never in a million years thought I would be selected to represent my country for the sport I love,” she said.

“I am extremely proud of my accomplishment, particularly after having two children. They were my motivation to show them what hard work and

dedication can get you.

“Not everything stops when you have children,” she smiled.

Australia retained overall World Cup honours after winning 12 finals in 13 divisions, including the women’s open (6-2) and men’s open (9-6), both against New Zealand.

The team’s only loss, 4-3 to New Zealand, came in the men’s 40s final.

Incredibly, Australia has won the Touch Football World Cup every year since its inception in 1988.

The series, with 39 countries competing this year, will be hosted

by New Zealand in 2028.

Animal Welfare League branch plea for ‘foster parents’ Work starts

The kittens at Moree Markets huddle patiently and stare anxiously as people stroll by.

They watch, they wonder and they hope. Their huge, soulful eyes are impossible to ignore.

Animal Welfare League NSW volunteer Jenny Smith gently strokes each kitten and purrs soothing words of encouragement.

“Maybe the next one,” she whispers.

The kittens have names like Blaze, Miss Kitty, Thumbelina, Sparky, Comet, Oreo, Peanut and Coconut. All they want is a new home and a family to love.

It’s not too much to ask.

But Jenny’s work with the Moree branch of Animal Welfare League NSW may come to a close if she can’t get volunteers to help.

Jenny, with the help of daughter Jaime, has been caring for homeless and abandoned animals through the league’s local branch for more than 20 years.

Jenny and Jaime desperately need foster mums and dads to look after abandoned cats, kittens, dogs and puppies until forever homes are found.

“Becoming a foster parent for these animals brings the joy of saving lives, loving the animals and making them healthy,” Jenny said.

“To become a volunteer, people need to be able to take the animals into their homes and love and care for them until adoptive homes are found.

“We don’t have anyone to foster both dogs and cats, only myself and Jaime. We’ve had up to 22 kittens in care at any given time.

“We do cats and dogs, but at the moment there are no dog carers available – just myself and Jaime for cats,” she said.

“I love the cats and kittens – they are all special,” Jenny smiled.

Jenny and Jaime attend the Moree Markets regularly, and animals are often adopted by loving families.

“The markets put us out there, so people know about us,” Jenny said.

“Having the animals there puts a smile on everyone’s faces, and there’s plenty of cuddles.

All veterinarian costs are covered by Animal Welfare League NSW and there is a small adoption fee.

The league is dedicated to the protection and welfare of animals.

The organisation, established in

1958, strives to provide a safe and loving environment for abandoned, neglected and surrendered animals.

Services include adoption, veterinary care, welfare inspections and community programs.

Foundation and pavement work have started on the Newell Highway’s newest heavy vehicle rest area, which will also be the largest of its kind in north-western New South Wales.

This project will be delivered as part of the $261 million Newell Highway Heavy Duty Pavement Upgrades project which is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

The Australian government is contributing $205.7 million, with the remaining $55 million being funded by the New South Wales government. This project is part of the Australian government’s $1.5 billion total investment in the Newell Highway.

The new rest area will feature: • Eighteen heavy vehicle parking spaces up to 48.5 metres long providing for short- and long-term parking • Ten light vehicle and caravan parking spaces for short-term parking • Toilet facilities, including disabled access • Picnic shelter and solar lighting • Rubbish bins, and • Tree planting and landscaping.

Telling the Stories of Cotton: Click 24 Photography Competition winners Cotton growers and their families are among those who have submitted spectacular images, and the stories behind them, in this year’s Click 24 Photography Competition, making a difficult task for judges.

With nearly 300 entries from across the country, from Kununurra in the west to Adelaide River in the north and as far south as Leeton, the competition highlighted the diverse and vibrant world of cotton growing.

Cotton Australia announced the award recipients. First place winner: Kieran Shepherd, Narrabri, for his photo of farm supervisors Tess and Ellie overseeing picking.

Runner up: Belinda Dimarzio-Ryan, Warren, for her photo titled ‘Find a bale, climb the bale, chill on the bale. Kids will be kids!’

Planet winner: Brodie Ryan Cronau, Brookstead, for his photo of the sun setting after the first incrop water.

People category winner: Michelle Hutchinson, Moura, for ‘Performance ready cotton’.

Paddock category winner: Jean-Baptiste Copin, Hillston, for ‘A busy round paddock’.

Wildcard winner: Annabelle Rogan, St George, who celebrated that there’s no place like home where it is all paws on deck during picking after a long-awaited trip back to the family cotton farm after being at boarding school.

The winning entries will be displayed at the Cotton Australia stand during the Australian Cotton Conference and all in attendance will have the opportunity to vote for the last category to be decided: the People’s Choice Award.

The Stories Behind the Photos The Click 24 photography competition encourage entrants to take unique photographs that showcase their experiences and dispel myths surrounding cotton production, community life,

innovation, and the growers themselves. The competition aim was to empower growers and their regional communities through the lens of photography, to open a window to farming life.

Pride and hard work One of the standout themes in this year’s competition is pride and hard work. As one entrant shared, “There is always a buzz around the town and the farm watching fields of green turn to white gold. The long days may blur into one but, pulling up and taking a second to admire it ending gives me a sense of pride knowing all the hard work paid off.”

Innovation and Sustainability in Action The way cotton is grown is changing, cotton fields are frontiers of innovation and sustainability. One photo captured this with a child in an astronaut costume standing in a cotton field, inspiring awe and wonder. “This cotton field isn’t just a farm—it’s a frontier where we push boundaries, redefine possibilities, and embark on a journey towards a sustainable future,” shared another photographer.

Family and Community Life The competition also highlights the importance of family and community life in cotton farming.

One entrant expressed their joy in raising their children on the farm.

“We are so grateful to be able to raise our children on our farm.

With muddy feet and a sense of adventure, our kids love nothing more than running down the farm road after school.”

Annabelle Rogan, the Wildcard winner, shared a similar sentiment: “Despite being at boarding school for the past 6 years, I was lucky enough to grow up on our family cotton farm in St George … school holidays, and the long-awaited trip back to the gum trees (and cotton bolls) never comes too soon.”

Challenges of Rural Life However, the photos and captions also shed light on the challenges faced by cotton growers, including isolation and remoteness. One poignant quote from the competition states, “Living in a cotton community in the Northern Territory means the nearest

daycare is two hours away.”

“No matter how pretty the landscape is, the farmer is still isolated from friends and family,” another entry revealed.

TARONGA COLLABORATES WITH INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS TO CONSERVE THE ICONIC PLATYPUS 40% anticipated decline over the next 50 years, this event highlighted the urgent need for more research on climate impacts and triggers for wild interventions.

A WORLD-FIRST RESEARCH PROGRAM aiming to conserve the iconic Platypus is now underway on Dundullimal Tubba-Gah Wiradjuri Country at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, Australia.

The multi-year project is a collaboration between Taronga Conservation Society Australia, which operates Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo and Taronga Zoo Sydney, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the University of NSW (UNSW).

In consultation with First Nations communities, a team of scientists seeking to learn more about these unique egg-laying mammals has launched the first-of-its-kind research program to improve conservation of the species – before it’s too late.

Four new platypuses have joined Platypus

Rescue HQ at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, providing a unique opportunity to study the species’ breeding behaviour and biology in a state-of-the-art setting where environmental parameters can be monitored and controlled.

Prior to their arrival, and as part of the Zoo’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, a Smoking Ceremony was performed by Traditional Owner, Tubba-Gah Maing Wiradjuri man Uncle Lewis Burns, to signify the connection of Wiradjuri Peoples to Country.

In February 2024, Taronga opened Platypus Rescue HQ, thanks to funding from the NSW government, philanthropic donors and WIRES. This facility is the world’s largest dedicated conservation centre for platypus, with the capacity to house up to 65 platypuses at once in times of extreme weather events, and encompasses areas for refuge, research and recovery.

“We hope that the refuge area inside Platypus Rescue HQ never needs to be used, but with increasing impacts of climate change and extreme weather we now have the capacity to undertake emergency rescue interventions,” said Taronga Cultural Programs Coordinator Kirsty Hargraves.

“This is important for Indigenous Communities, their ancestral connection to Country and to ensure connection to cultural identity for future generations. These animals are crucial to our heritage and the Wiradjuri story.

They are our ancestors and if we look after our ancestors, we’ll always look after Country.

“The Smoking Ceremony was also Ngunggiyarra, to make a promise to the ancestor being, Platypus and to foster good intention moving forward, promoting partnerships and pathways for First Nations peoples and communities to be able to continue to practice Country through Taronga Western Plains Zoo conservation projects.”

Equipped with independent stream systems, waterfalls, and plenty of space to dig cozy burrows, Platypus Rescue HQ’s purposebuilt research facility is designed to mimic the wild and allow researchers to monitor the platypuses in the most natural setting possible.

The research program, which combines ex-situ monitoring and wild population field work, aims to refine the conservation strategy for the Platypus by understanding how this vulnerable and elusive monotreme is responding to environmental stressors like climate change, and identifying interventions required to protect the animal’s future.

“The Platypus is such a loved and iconic Australian animal, but there is still so much we need to learn about them if we want to help them thrive into the future,” said Program co-leader, Wildlife Conservation Officer, Dr Phoebe Meagher.

“Understanding the key factors leading to reproductive success and how platypus respond to extreme climatic events like severe drought are crucial knowledge gaps we plan to fill.

“Taronga’s ongoing consultation with Traditional Custodians and local Knowledge Holders is building strong connections and trust between Taronga across our two zoos, our partners and Indigenous peoples in caring for Country.”

During the last significant drought in 2019, Taronga and UNSW led a successful emergency rescue of platypuses. With a 21% overall decline in the species’ geographic range and a further

National Park to re-establish a previously locally extinct population.

Taronga also co-led an emergency translocation of 7 Platypus from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve during the mega-fires of 2019/20. In 2024, Platypus Rescue HQ was opened at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, further cementing Taronga as a global leader in Platypus conservation.

“In 2019-2020, we saw just how vulnerable platypus are to prolonged drought, megafires and floods, which are only going to become more common as a result of a changing climate,” said Taronga and UNSW research associate Dr Tahneal Hawke.

“This project will also monitor wild platypus populations over a range of environmental conditions, improving understanding of when interventions might be necessary and the species’ breeding requirements.

“This project is really exciting because now, in collaboration with our partners, we have a unique opportunity to work out what we can actually do about it, and how we can improve the future for Platypus.”

“Platypuses play a crucial role in maintaining the health of their native watersheds and uniquely contribute to our planet’s biodiversity,” said Dr Hendrik Nollens, vice president of Wildlife Health with San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

By using this facility in combination with wild population monitoring, scientists believe they will be best prepared to inform Taronga’s future emergency response strategies, and develop a genome resource bank and genetics database to better understand and protect wild platypus populations.

Crucially, the program aims to crack the code on platypus breeding, with only 23 puggles produced in zoos since 1943, and many of the physiological, behavioural, and environmental factors
