Award wins for Coona Times Building on its success from 2022, the Coonabarabran Times has scooped two major awards at this year’s Country Press NSW Awards of Excellence.

This year’s awards were adjudicated by a panel of industry experts drawn from Queensland, NSW and South Australia, and chaired by Country Press NSW Life Member, Barry Wilson.

The Coonabarabran Times will now proceed to judging in the Country Press Australia National Awards.

Australia votes ‘No’ to the Voice On the evening of Saturday, 14 October, the Voice referendum failed, with a majority of voters in the majority of states voting against the proposed change to the Australian Constitution.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has, however, said that he would not push to legislate a Voice if the referendum failed.

Mr Albanese said that though he was disappointed with the result of the referendum, he would continue to seek better outcomes for Indigenous Australians, their children, and the generations to come.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney acknowledged that the last few months have

been tough for Indigenous Australians and said that all Indigenous Australians should be proud of who they are.

Ms Burney said this is not the end of reconciliation and that in the coming months she would have more to say about the government’s renewed commitment to closing the gap.

“We all agree we need better outcomes for First Nations people,” she said.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said he thought the result of the referendum was “good for the country” and said the Coalition is committed to addressing Indigenous disadvantage, but disagrees that the Voice

would have been the correct solution.

He described the Voice as “the referendum that Australia didn’t need to have.”

Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, Jacinta Nampijinpa Price said much work has to be done to bring Australia together to tackle tough issues.

“The Australian people have said ‘no’ to this, the Australian people want practical outcomes; a unified country where we can move forward together.”

Indigenous supporters of the Voice issued a statement calling for a ‘Week of Silence’ starting from the evening of

Saturday, 14 October, during which Indigenous leaders would not further comment on the result, but rather take time to grieve the outcome and reflect on its significance.

The statement also requested that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags be lowered to halfmast throughout this week of silence.

The numbers Nationally, 60.73% voted against the Voice, with only 39.27% of Australians voting in favour of the Voice.

When looking from a state level, none of the six states voted with a majority of ‘yes’ votes.

Of these states, Queensland had the highest majority of ‘No’ voters, with 68.95% of people voting against the Voice.

Though no states voted in favour of the Voice, Victoria had the highest percentage of ‘Yes’ votes for a state, with 44.96% of

people voting in favour of the Voice, and 55.04% of people voting against it.

The ACT was the only territory to vote in favour of the Voice, with 60.79% of people voting ‘yes’, and 39.21% voting ‘no.’

This electorate covers the entirety of the Northern Territory, excluding Darwin, and has an Indigenous population of 40%.

Local results In the Parkes Electorate, from a total of 89,910 voters across 94 polling places, only 20.61% of people voted in favour of the Voice, with 79.39% of people voting against the proposed change.

Wrapped with love On Monday, 16 October, local knitters came together to celebrate their hard work in creating a multitude of colourful blankets in support of the Wrap With Love charity.

decade, creating almost 900 wraps since 2012, when records began to be kept.

Despite being s m a l l e r i n nu m b e r s this year due to illness, the Coonaba rabran k n itti ng g roup was

able to create 72 wraps, which will be sent to its head office in Sydney to be forwarded across the world to places in need.

Fund-raiser to support Kyle Turner’s children The South Sydney Rabbitohs, Souths Cares and the Family of League have organised a number of fundraisers to help support the three children of Kyle Turner.

The Trustees for the fund will be the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ CEO, Kyle’s manager Steve Gillis and the Family of League, all of whom w i l l be entr ust ed t o administer the Trust f u nd a nd d i s t r i but e funds at the appropriate time. All funds raised for the Trust fund will go to the children of Kyle Turner.

Auctioneers, Livestock and Property Servicing Warrumbungle Shire

Weekly cattle and sheep market wrap • Cattle and sheep yardings lifted after disruptions last week.

• Feeder steer indicator fell 13¢ to 205¢/kg.

• Lamb prices eased but remain above month-ago levels.

Cattle Cattle yardings lifted by 8,243 from last week t o 3 4 , 2 9 9 head , as several sales in NSW and Queensland that did not run in the previous week due to public holidays ran this week.

T he pr o cess or c ow indicator lifted by 13¢ to 155¢/kg live weight (lwt). This was in part due to the inclusion of the Wagga sale in the i nd ic at or, wh ich d id not run in the previous week. Making up 18% of throughput, processor cows at Wagga sold at 8¢ above the national average, which pulled up the indicator overall.

Processor cow prices lifted more generally,

w it h pr o c e s s or c ows increasing in value in every state bar South Australia, where slightly higher throughput and slow bidding saw the indicator ease slightly.

Steer prices fell, with the feeder steer indicator easing 13¢ over the week to 205¢/kg lwt and the heavy steer indicator easing 11¢ to 220¢/kg lwt. National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS) market reports noted a g row ing gap between quality lines and plainer cattle, and the heavy steer indicator is now 15¢ more expensive than the feeder steer indicator, the largest heavy steer premium seen since October 2019.

Sheep and lambs Yardings Lamb yardings lifted substantially from last week – by 32,851 head – while sheep yardings lifted by 41,018 to 97,563 head. Wagga yardings lifted 23,500 from the previous week to 69,500 head, for the largest yarding since March and the largest sheep yarding since December 2022.

Lamb indicator prices eased moderately this week, but not by enough to erase the price rises seen the week before. The heavy lamb indicator fell by 9¢ to 484¢/kg carcase weight (cwt) as NSW heavy lamb prices eased.

heavy lambs, while the ind icator in Victor ia actually rose by 2¢ over the week to 484¢/kg cwt.

Despite the price falls this week, all the lamb and sheep ind icators remain above monthago levels, as the easing was relatively limited compared to the considerable price uplift seen the week before.

Slaughter Week ending 06/10 As expected, overall slaughter was down last week as public holidays reduced the number of operating days in several key states.

Cattle slaughter was down 11% week-on-week t o 111,125 head, the smallest kill since early

May. Public holidays had a clear impact. NSW slaughter fell 10% to 27,862 head, Queensland slaughter fell by 19% to 54,925 head and South Australian slaughter fell 16% to 3,388 head, while slaughter in Victoria and Western Australia rose.

Sheep and lamb slaughter also eased.

Lamb slaughter fell by 11,121 to 415,357 head, while sheep slaughter fell by 16,180 to 134,698 head. A notable exception to the general trend was Victorian lamb slaughter, which rose by 35,303 to 232,174 head, the weekly figure on record.

Snake season slithers in Watch your step! With warmer weather on the way, it’s the perfect time for a refresher on snake safety, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable time in nature.

Eastern brown snakes are common around the Warrumbungle Shire area.

Local snake catcher, Steve Wallace said most snakes that went into hibernation last season would have survived dormancy due to fairly mild conditions over winter.

“Moving into the warmer months, we’ve got perfect conditions for all sorts of snakes to come out and look for a mate, lay eggs, or give birth to live young if they’re black snakes,” Mr Wallace said.

“We also had a mouse plague just before winter, so there’s lots of mice in the field that are still around, and though the snakes are coming out of dormancy with plenty of fat reserves, they’ll still be hungry and looking for both food and a mate.”

Mr Wallace said that as we move into snake season, it’s important for the public to be aware that Australian is home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world.

“The eastern brown snake – which is all we have around Coonabarabran, we don’t have king browns – is responsible for 27 out of the last 35 snake-related

deaths in Australia; so they actually kill more people than taipans.”

Going into some of the gruesome details about the effects of a brown snake bite, Mr Wallace said the venom creates clots in the brain, liver, kidneys, and lungs.

“It also has a myotoxin in it to help the muscles relax, allowing the venom to move through the system.”

When it comes to treating a snake bite, Mr Wallace said the first thing you will need is a 15-centimetre bandage, with adult limbs requiring two of these bandages.

“Basically, you just need to start at the bite site and work up from these until you run out of bandage,” Mr Wallace said.

“So, if bitten at the knee for example, you would start at the knee and work your way up towards the groin, and then all the way back towards the ankles.”

Mr Wallace did recommend, however, not to bandage the fingers or toes in the event of a snake bite, as this may keep the venom in these areas and may exacerbate the effects of the venom.

“The most important thing is to go towards the heart first – start at the bite site, then wrap towards the heart.”

To avoid being bitten in the first place, Mr Wallace said it’s important to always remain vigilant when bushwalking and to wear thick jeans or other clothing to protect your legs from snake bites.

“It’s also a good idea to carry a snake bandage or two and, if bitten, stay calm and cool,” Mr Wallace said.

Shingles vaccine on offer soon Australians at risk of shingles will soon have access to a newly funded vaccine, providing protection against a painful condition.

T he G S K sh i n g le s vaccine ‘Shingrix’ will be available to eligible people from 1 November 2023, through the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

S h i n g le s c a n b e a painful and potentially debilitating condition, w h i c h i s c au s e d b y the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus – the same virus that c au s e s c h i c k e n p o x earlier in life.

S h i n g le s t y pic a l ly presents as a rash, with painful blisters across the chest, abdomen, or face, with pain being descr ibed as ach i ng, burning, or shock-like.

Following the rash, people can also experience post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) – pain lasting from at least t h r e e m o nt h s up t o several years from the onset of the rash.

About one in three pe ople w i l l develop shingles in their lifetime and nearly all adults aged 50 years and older carry the inactive virus that causes shingles.

Robert B ooy, honorary professor at the University of Sydney and infectious diseases exper t, said the N I P l i s t i n g i s a p o s it ive s t ep for wa r d by t he government in helping Au st r a l i a n s m a n age their risk of developing shingles. “ Shingles can be ser ious, and in some cases ca n resu lt i n patients being impacted by debilitating, longterm effects,” Prof. Booy said.

“People who develop shingles generally need time off work, sometimes for weeks, and if they experience post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain can l inger long a f ter the rash and blisters have disappeared.”

Wa r r umbungle Medical Centre practice manager, Dr Aniello Iannuzzi said he reccommended eligible people discuss the vaccine with their doctor during a routine visit. “ Shingles is a very painful condition and I recommend that all eligible persons consider having the vaccine,” Dr Iannuzzi said.

“Please note that it is not a seasonal disease like in f luenza, so no need to panic to get an appointment.”

On the road to Baradine On Sunday, 15 October, locals Bel Mills and her daughter Kenzie took on an enormous task, journeying from Coonabarabran to Baradine to raise awareness for autism and juvenile diabetes.

by JIMMY WHALAN With a combination of bike riding and walking, Bel and Kenzie tackled the 42-kilometre journey in just four hours, finishing their journey at the Thirsty Farmer Hotel in Baradine.

Bel said she did the walk to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes. “ My daug hter a nd great niece both live with juvenile diabetes, so finding a cure is my ultimate dream and wish,” Bel said.

This year, Kenzie chose to run for the one in 70 Australians on the autism spectrum.

“The little boy I babysit has autism, and also friends who work with my dad, their son has autism,” Kenzie said.

“Any contribution, large or small, will help make a huge difference in the lives of families waiting on an autism

diagnosis.”

Bel said the result of the fund-raiser was incredible, with many people stopping along the way to find out what they were doing.

With some gifting any spare change they had and others donating as much as $50, Bel said their fund-raising efforts were a great success.

“A lot of people also turned up at the pub and made donations, while others donated online - so it’s mostly just been word-of-mouth and people have taken it from there.”

By the end of their marathon-long journey, Bel said she and Kenzie were exhausted, but proud of their efforts on the day.

“I was quite emotional – just the fact that we were able to do it, especially with Kenzie being type 1 diabetic,” Bel said.

“She had a couple of highs and lows [blood glucose levels], which we expected, but she just took everything as it happened and kept pushing forward.

“Juvenile diabetes isn’t really acknowledged anywhere as a lifethreatening illness, but it is – it’s non-curable and it’s life-threatening.”

Bel said she had catalogued the journey on social media, with some live streams and photos throughout the day, with hopes to encourage more people to support the cause.

“We didn’t necessarily make a target for how much we wanted to raise, it was more just something we wanted to do,” Bel said.

“We raise money for diabetes every year, but Kenzie will always pick a different cause to support, so this year she picked autism.”

Mark Kotynia, Ballz n All bassist, said the band is excited to return to Coonabarabran, saying it was and opportunity to meet new people and sh a r e t hei r or i g i n a l music.

“Our EP is about the stories of people we have met and the things we have seen,” Mr Kotynia said.

He mentions a story of one character they met in Parkes, whom the band have written a song about.

“He was a bit of weird dude,” Mr Kotynia said. “ He was heav i lyt at t o o e d , we a r i n g a yellow Adidas tracksuit and had a push bike.

“He introduced himself and said, ‘my name is Jay, but you can call

me 46’. Then he pulled up his tracksuit pants and he was wearing an ankle bracelet – or a jail monitor,” Mr Kotynia said.

There is no official release date for the EP, however, M r Kotynia expects the songs to be released very soon.

Ballz n All has travelled and performed throughout most of the Central West and other Western regions within NSW. The band commenced p er for m i n g t o g et her at local Cobar shows c a l le d “ Fou r on t he Floor”, organised by Mr Kotynia.

These events quickly gained traction and the band built up a popular following.

Mr Kotynia said the band rarely rehearse, not i ng thei r up -beat performance comes from a place of passion and the crowd’s response.

T he band has a symbiotic relationship w ith thei r crowds, believing the better a performance, the more a crowd will respond.

“Once you are up there digging it, we will give you more,” Mr Kotynia said.

Each band member has had music influence their lives, discovering a good song is derived from a good beat and performance.

Their shows aim to br ing people to their feet and encourages the audience to enjoy the feeling of music.

“If it is a good beat they can feel it in their bones,” Mr Kotynia said.

Most members of the band have worked with wel l-k now n a r tists, however, M r Kotynia said he has the most fun with Ballz n All. T he ba nd ’s f ut u r e plans include performing at Tamworth Country M u s i c Fe s t i v a l a n d expanding their experiences to reach a wider audience.

They hope to apply for more festivals and to complete a full-length album over the next 12 months.

Bungle Rumble is shaping up to be a successful day and Ballz n All is ready to bring their wildly energetic sound to the concert.

What ’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? I have only had two main jobs – the bank for over 20 years and then Cooinda for 23 years – both interesting.

You’ve had a stressful day – what’s you r way o f w i nd i ng down? To relax at home where it is quiet and peaceful.

How would your friends and family d e s c r i b e yo u i n t h r e e wo r d s?

Reliable, kind, loyal.

What is your favourite season and why? I like autumn – I don’t like the hot weather much and I love the autumn leaves.

What gets you through a long road trip? Listening to a podcast or just taking the time to think.

Have you read any good books l a te l y ? Yes, lately I have been reading courtroom drama books lent to me by my friend, Janette.

D o you h a ve a n i n t e res t i n g o r random fac t to sha re? Positive thoughts change the structure of the brain.

Do you have a hidden talent? I am saving my talents until I retire and have more time to explore them – I must have some, I am sure.

If you could pick a decade to visit on a time machine what would it be? I would like to go back (not forward) and visit the 50s – I think that life was simpler than it is now.

What’s the most used emojis on your phone? Smiley face, birthday cake, champagne, thumbs up.

If you could have anyone around for dinner who would it be? The late Pete Crawley – our big mate who we still miss.

Spotlight on legume potential at local field day

New book unveiled: Bush Tragedies

A compilation of 23 short stories about historical crimes, murders and tragedies has been compiled into a new book by Warrumbungle region farmers have been learning how to improve legumes in pasture systems through award-winning journalist, Bill Poulos. a series of field days run by AgSTAR Projects in conjunction with UNE Agriculture.

The stories featured in “Bush Tragedies” hail from western NSW and south-western Queensland and once made headlines around Australia.

The tales have long been forgotten – until now.

“Bush Tragedies is a compilation of short stories from dark pockets of Australia’s history, recorded in stark, descriptive detail,” said Moree-based author, Bill Poulos.

Readers will travel a gruesome journey across outback NSW, stopping at obscure little towns and villages where these shocking crimes and tragedies unfolded.

Bush Traged ies ch ron icl es h i sto r ica l events from towns, villages and settlements including Goondiwindi, St George, Narrabri, Bingara, Inverell, Warialda, Quambone, Dubbo, Coonabarabran, Biniguy, Gilgandra, Garah, Mungindi, Boggabilla, Terry Hie Hie, Barraba, Collarenebri, Uralla and Moree.

The creation of Bush Tragedies was enti rely accidental, the author said.

“The book is a classic case of serendipity, given I was working on a completely different project when the idea for this book came along,” Mr Poulos said.

“I was researching information on the history of horse-racing in the bush, and I kept getting sidetracked by sensational headlines and news reports about murders, crimes and tragedies in towns and villages across western NSW and the bottom end of Queensland.”

Bush Tragedies, comprising 23 stories, 130,000 words and 526 pages, covers the years from the mid- to late-1800s to around 1950.

The stories are deeply-researched and detailed, and written in a style known as creative non-fiction.

“Rather than compile boring, historical essays, I wanted to make these stories as interesting as possible,” Mr Poulos said.

Mr Poulos urges readers to support their local bookseller, where possible.

“Please check with your local book shop or retailer about the availability of Bush Tragedies – there’s nothing better than over-the-counter sales to support small businesses, especially in country areas,” he said.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, the events are part of U N E ’s O v e r c o m i n g the K nowledge Gaps project, building drought resilience by increasing the use of deep-rooted leg umes i n pastu re systems.

UNE associate professor, David McNeill said the program aimed to help producers overcome c om mon c on s t r a i nt s experienced with legumes by discussing appropriate species selection, soil type, climate and management practices. “ Legumes can take nitrogen from the atmosphere and donate it to the surrounding soil and microbes,” A /Prof McNeill said. “ S ome deep -r o ot ed legumes can also access nutrients that may be b eyond t he r e ach of shallower-rooted grasses and accumulate these nutrients in their aboveground biomass.”

AgSTA R P rojects ag ronomist, Ca llen Thompson organised the field days and said he had a strong response from local farmers. “ The first field day was an introduction to legume establishment a nd m a n a g ement i n tropical pastures at Sam and Megan Clifton’s place near Purlewaugh,” Mr Thompson said.

“Our two-day, legumes’

masterclass followed and goes into more depth on soil characteristics, leg ume selection and fertiliser use.”

James Forbes, from Coonabarabran, attended the masterclass and said it was very interesting. “ It’s reinforced the importance of fertiliser for production and

sele cti ng the r ight legumes for the right country,” Mr Forbes said.

B i n n away f a r mer Jim Larkin hosted the masterclass field visit at his property “Clarefield”, which he manages with son, Jack. He enjoyed the opportunity to learn from presenters and other farmers.

“ We a r e t r y i n g t o improve all the time and get a lot out of these events,” Mr Larkin said. “ We are seeing and learning the potential of hard-seeded legumes such as ser radel la , biserrula and arrowleaf clover in tropical pastures.

“These legumes have

potential to maintain productivity and handle the variability in seasonal conditions, which will me a n when s e a s on s are favourable we can continue to maximise pasture production.”

The second day of the masterclass was held in Coonabarabran on Tuesday.

The encounter, played in a spirit of sportsmanship, left spectators on the edge of their seats.

Gunnedah High exhibited their prowess, setti ng a form id able target of 130 runs for Coonabarabran High.

T he s t a r of t he d ay was one of Gunnedah's openers, who played an

extraordinary innings, remaining unbeaten at 77 runs. Her exceptional performance set the tone for Gunnedah's batting display.

Coonabarabran High School, however, va liantly defended against a formidable b owl i ng at t ack f r om Gunnedah. While their defence was st out, t hey c ou ld n' t m at c h the s c or i ng pace set by t he i r o pp o ne nt s .

Coonaba rabran High managed to reach 53 runs after their allotted 20 overs, falling short of the target.

Despite the outcome, both teams are applauded for thei r exceptiona l spor tsmansh ip and dedication to the game.

Tooraweenah Public Warren Marshes Landcare Excursion Wa r r e n We t l a n d s proved to be a fantastic place to do some hands-on, in-the-field environmental education, last week.

Gu ided by WOW (Window on the Wetlands) volunteer, Jim, students t o u r e d t h e Wa r r e n Wetlands searching for bird-life, hearing bird calls and spotting some very interesting birds including a yellow-billed spoonbill, king f isher, va r iou s p a r r ot s a nd wrens.

T he wetla nds a re looking low at present due to the limited rain, but we were able to see the water mark from last year, still visible on the trees. We can’t wait to return to visit after more rain.

Back at the Window on the Wetlands (WOW) Centre, students learned about different nests of birds, how the wetlands provide important habitat for wildlife. Jim, along with Therese Ryan, of Coonamble Landcare, a l l o we d s t ud e nt s t o explore the WOW Centre g a r den s a nd en g a g e in a treasure hunt for mat ch i ng pla nts a nd trees. Students explored the centre in g reater detail by hunting for facts and figures using c l ipb o a r d s t o r e c or d their findings around the centre.

It was a delight to visit the centre. We are very thankful to Coonamble Landcare for providing the funds to support our pa r ticipation on th is worthwhile excursion, and to the Window on the Wetla nds C entre volunteers.

Teachers get a taste of the bush At the end of term three, 50 teaching students journeyed to several rural schools, engaging with communities to gain valuable insights into what it’s like to teach in regional and rural areas.

The five-day trip saw second and third-year university students travel to several regional, rural, and remote NSW public schools including Coonabarabran, Binnaway, Narrabri, Tamworth, Barraba, Gunnedah, Taree, Quirindi and Mudgee.

As part of the Rural and Remote Education Strategy, the idea was to deliver high-quality educators who were aware of and interested in the localised needs of country areas.

After successful

completion of the study tour, applicants will be encouraged and supported to complete a future rural practicum through the program or to commence employment in a rural setting following graduation.

Coonabarabran High School principal, Mary Doolan said the program was a great opportunity to inspire teachers to come back to the bush.

“I think the program is incredibly worthwhile as it gives teacher education students a window into what it is like to teach

in rural NSW, and the huge opportunities which flow from refining your craft in the supportive environment of a country school.”

Senior education officer of Attraction and Engagement Programs, Shannon Brehony said the department has had an overwhelmingly positive response from all the pre-service teachers who attended the tour, with many excited to pursue a teaching career in regional or rural NSW public schools.

After a week

experiencing teaching at rural schools across the state, third-year university student Sarah Noble found that she didn’t want to leave.

It really hit home for the Newcastlebased Ms Noble after her presentation night, when her students had to depart.

“I was ready to hop off the bus and stay there,” Ms Noble said.

“I didn’t want to come home – if I didn’t have the rest of my teaching degree to do, I would have just stayed.”

Baradine campdraft rides high on success The recent Baradine Campdraft attracted more than 100 competitors over two days and featured a range of top-quality local and visiting riders.

was much better than expected,” Mr Tanner said.

“Overall, the registrations were not as high as in previous years, but we put this down to the rise in fuel prices and the fact that we are going into tough times again, with some farmers already feeding stock.

“In fact, at one point we were not sure we would even be able to hold the event as it is t ota l ly dependent on stock availability. But we ende d up h av i n g plenty of stock for the runs, even having more cattle than we could use – which was great.”

M r Ta n ner gave a special mention to the event sponsors a nd volunteers who, he said, were the backbone of running such an event. “ We h ad a g r e at number of sponsors so we had prizes for every plac i ng,” M r Ta n ner said.

“It is a big call to ask breeders to lend their stock for an event like this. All the cattle were strong, fast and in good condition considering the current season. We are very lucky to get such support.”

Mr Tanner added that the campd ra ft was a great way for the horse community to connect and celebrate the sport in competition together. “ T he competition was of a high quality; congratulations go to all participants,” concluded Mr Tanner.

COONABARABRAN DARTS The final of the C o on aba rabra n Da r t s Competition was played on Wednesday, 11 October, where the Bowlo Jokers 6 (Randall Ruttley 100) defeated Bowlo Skulls 5 (Chubb Watton 100, Mel Clark 110).

The games played were very close, with the score at five-all going into the last game, which was won by the Jokers.

Bowlo Skulls played very well for their first year in the competition – so watch out for them next year!

played last night between Bowlo Assassins and the Bowlo Jokers – results in next week’s Coona Times.

VETERANS’ GOLF Tuesday, 10 October Eleven veteran golfers enjoyed playing in the second round of the John Walker competition at the Coonabarabran Golf Club on Tuesday, 10 October, in good weather conditions.

The winner on the day was Dick Clark with a net 30, while the runnerup was Dave Bunyan with a net 31.

Nearest to the pins went to Dick Clark, Peter McDonald, Bill Brown and Mick Noy. The long putt was won

COONABARABRAN LADIES’ GOLF Our beautiful golf course at Coonabarabran is suffering from lack of rain, as is the case everywhere around the town and district. The poem, ‘My Country’, by Dorothea MacKeller, rings true – ‘a land of fires, droughts and flooding rains’.

With water restrictions already in place, how will we cope with the summer heat? We’ve been through it before and I’m sure we will do it again. We can deal with the heat and dry conditions but, please, no fires.

The stableford played on Wednesday, 11 October was won by Kerrie Ward, who played very well, returning a score of 39 points.

Runner-up was Jan Keppie with 35 points,

also a good score. Nearest the pin on the 4/13th hole was Doreen Searle.

Three of our girls competed in the Mudgee Tournament over the weekend. There were 100 competitors on the Saturday in a four-ball event where Lou Dowsett and Jane McWhirter came in third place. Well done!

Seventy-five ladies contested Sunday’s event where Jane placed in the top 10 – and she also won the nearest the pin prize.

Two good but long days with so many competitors. The weather was very hot, which added to their discomfort.

Acknowledgement for dedication to the arts for Patricia Robertson A luncheon was held at ‘Newstead’, Mullaley, the home of John and Julia Anderson, to commemorate the retirement of Julia’s mother, Patricia Robertson OAM, of Coonabarabran as the patron of an innovative arts group, the Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Society (ADFAS).

The occasion was attended by the National Association of ADFAS chair Jane Smith, ADFAS National events and workshop coordinator and ADFAS Tamworth society co-chair Meg Larkin, and ADFAS Narrabri chair Elizabeth Campbell.

Mrs Robertson is the founder of ADFAS and has devoted many years to the non-profit organisation, also heading a philanthropy charity named the Patricia Robertson Fund (PRF) in her honour.

Nearly four decades ago, Mrs Robertson was the driving force behind an idea, one that launched an concept which has today grown into 37 arts society groups and more than 5500 members across regional and metropolitan Australia.

Founding chair of the Association of ADFAS and the visionary behind the first arts lecture held in Sydney in 1985, the group now have an administration run by a governing body and collectively by hundreds of volunteers on local committees Australia-wide.

Offering illustrated, informative and entertaining lecture presentations on many diverse topics relating to the arts, in many communities the local ADFAS society has become the focus of cultural activities, connecting people with the arts and with each other.

Mrs Robertson first became aware of The Arts Society UK (or NADFAS, as it was then known) in the mid 1980s during an overseas trip to England. After attending what she felt was an intriguing and informative arts talk, she was encouraged by the NADFAS National Chair to form an equivalent society in her adopted city of Sydney.

Mrs Robertson returned to Australia and with the support of rallying friends, she nurtured and cultivated a determination to see ADFAS succeed.

The first ADFAS arts lecture was launched in Sydney in March 1985 and delivered by Edmund Capon, director of the Art Gallery of NSW and later elected president of the Association of ADFAS. During this time, Mrs Robertson approached Sydney cultural enthusiast and socialite Lady Marjorie Pagan (dec) to offer her the prestigious position of founding patron. Lady Pagan initially demurred and decided to join the committee instead. Later acqui-

escing to the position of patron, Lady Pagan assumed the title from 2004 until 2015.

ADFAS societies had already begun to spring up across the country; Canberra in 1986, Armidale and Melbourne in 1987, and Bowral, Newcastle and Sunshine Coast in 1988. Following the formation of the National Association of ADFAS in 1989, Brisbane, Shoalhaven, Toowoomba, and Yarra launched societies that same year.

Soon, cost-effective circuits of towns and cities were established, which have today expanded into three circuits comprising of 37 society venues, as far-reaching as Perth, Hobart and Launceston.

UK Arts Society lecturers are keen to visit Australia and the organisation offers a mix of International and Australian speakers to arts enthusiasts nationwide.

Mrs Robertson’s tireless efforts in support of ADFAS did not end there. Throughout the ensuing years, she has been a friend and mentor to successive office bearers and the instigator of a philanthropic charity.

Long recognising that conservation is a significantly under-funded area of the arts, Mrs Robertson suggested that ADFAS could make a meaningful difference to this vital work. She desired to develop a fund to assist young and

mid-career conservators in advancing their skills and practice in the conservation of Australian cultural materials.

To commemorate its 20th anniversary milestone, it was decided to actively support conservation in accordance with the ADFAS mission statement and spirit of giving.

Subsequently, ADFAS was pleased to make a three-year commitment to an annual Association of ADFAS Student Conservator Award, providing financial support for outstanding conservation graduates.

Appropriate mechanisms were then put in place by the Association to establish a separate permanent resource to further the cause of conservation and be derived exclusively from voluntary donations. This new fund was officially launched in 2014.

In early 2017 a new agreement between the Association of ADFAS and the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) was formed.

It was agreed that for three years (2017-2019) three awards would be granted annually. This arrangement continues to this day.

ADFAS societies additionally support young students across all avenues of the arts, offering annual grants and showcasing budding young talent within their

respective districts.

Mrs Robertson was awarded the title of patron of ADFAS upon the death of Lady Pagan in 2015. To this day she retains a keen interest in the growth of ADFAS. “I feel so blessed to have had wonderful successors to continue on with a passion and devotion to the arts”, said Mrs Robertson. “I enjoyed every minute of setting up the Sydney society, and it just

went on from there.

“There was a particular satisfaction in bringing the arts to rural areas of Australia which do not have such easy access to the arts and cultural events as their city counterparts.

“I have made many lifelong friends through my involvement with ADFAS, and those friendships and memories are still with me today.”

High winds forced emergency services to remain on scene overnight in Warrumbungle National Park where a man sustained multiple injuries in a fall.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked to assist a man aged in his 30s who had fallen about 50m.

But after arriving on scene, the helicopter’s critical care medical team was unable to be winched into the location due to high winds.

The helicopter landed at a location nearby and the medical team hiked to the scene on foot.

Unable to be extracted due to the severe weather conditions, a critical care paramedic and doctor treated the man for shoul-

der, rib, and limb injuries before spending the night at the scene with him.

The rescue helicopter returned to base around midnight and returned to the scene at about 9am the following morning but still faced challenging weather conditions.

A second critical care paramedic was winched into the scene to assist the medical team with the patient’s extraction.

The patient, doctor and the two critical care paramedics were winch extracted into the aircraft before being flown to Dubbo Airport where the man was transported by road ambulance to Dubbo Hospital.

Aquatic centre tender awarded Moree Plains Shire Council resolved at its extraordinary meeting, held on October 12, to award the tender for the construction of the 50-metre pool at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre (MAAC) to Crystal Pools Pty Limited.

Crystal Pools Pty Ltd is a leading Australian commercial pool builder, owned and operated since 1957.

Having been in the business for over 65 years, they are certified for federal, state and local government commercial swimming pool

design and construction, making them familiar with regulations and requirements, council said in a statement.

“My fellow councillors and I are very excited to have secured a reputable company to complete the 50-metre pool for the community and our visitors, as we are all aware the artesian water brings tourism to our shire,” Mayor Mark Johnson said.

“To have the centre completed with its cold-water pool, will help us reinstate us as the ‘Artesian

Capital’. We understand the frustration this process has caused in the community, however, we needed to ensure our due diligence was done regarding this project.

“The awarding of the tender today marks a significant step forward to returning this iconic asset to our shire.”

In its aquatic centre update, council also provided a timeline of redevelopment works.

Current/October 2023: - All pools at the MAAC are

currently closed. Belgravia Leisure remains operating the centre to allow customers access to the gym and café and to assist patrons with any enquiries.

- Tenders for the club house and grandstand are open for a further two weeks.

November 2023 - The Program and Passive Pools will re-open.

- The ‘Learn to Swim’ Program will recommence.

Remembrance Day service clarification from Moree RSL Sub-branch Dear sir,

Regional Australian communities deserve local news as much as our big cities do.

Local independent newspapers still connect more than 80% of the country, but currently the commonwealth government invests close to 0% of its advertising budget here.

The federal government could help secure the future of regional news with zero extra cost by simply allocating a fairer share of government advertising to local and regional news services.

One page per week of important government information in regional newspapers would be a great start. This shouldn’t be controversial.

It’s a simple and fair solution for the future of regional news.

Strawberry & Banana Yoghurt Muffins Preparation 25 min | Cooking 15 min | Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 350g dried orecchiette* or penne pasta 2 tbs olive oil 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into 4cm pieces 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1-2 (to your taste) small red bird’s eye chillies, deseeded and finely chopped 250g tomato medley**, halved lengthways 40g rocket leaves, trimmed 75g feta, crumbled Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling *Orecchette is small pasta shaped like a little ear. **Tomato medley is a colourful mix of mini roma, cherry, tear drop and kumatoes sold in punnets.

STEP 1 Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling water, following packet directions, until al dente.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add asparagus, garlic and chillies and cook, stirring often, for 3-4 minutes until asparagus is almost tender. Toss through tomatoes.

STEP 3 Drain pasta. Add pasta to asparagus mixture and toss over low heat. Gently toss through rocket, sprinkle with feta and season with pepper. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil to serve.
