Question of the Day

Trusses and Pressure Treated Lumber Stan Sias - National Manager

Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie

The phone rang this morning and the caller said that “they had a real quick question.” They went on to ask if “standard truss plates could be used with pressure treated lumber?”

January 1st, 2016 #09198 Page #4 SAWS

2004 TCT Model 1100 Linear Saw Cut 2x4 and 2x6 Lumber from 3” to 20’. Tops, Bottoms, Webs, Sliders, Wedges and Scissor Bottoms. 230 Volt / 3 Phase 5 HP Motor with 24” Blade. Ink Jet Printer. Scrap Conveyor. $36,900 FOB AR. Wasserman & Associates 800-382-0329 www.wasserman-associates.com

Hmmmm…the questions that some questions prompt. It sort of reminds me of the questions that I used get back when I was a component manufacturer and EWP supplier. I had a sign on the wall behind my desk that simply said $2.00 each. Folks would drop by my office and the first words out of their mouths would be…”How much is …?” and I would point at the sign. Before we could address “How much?” we needed to address the question of “What is it that you need?”, as understanding the scope of work and other expectations surely helped me to answer the question of “How Much?”. Back to the call this morning; when the caller asked his question. Where did my mind go; as this question prompted the additional questions. The short answer would have been no, but before giving that one out I decided to probe a little deeper. Questions: 1. What exactly is your intended application? 2. Why does the lumber need to be pressure treated? Is it really a ground contact situation or wetting and drying? 3. If at or near the ground, and unprotected, is it really a good place for truss plates? 4. If wetting/drying is occurring, eventually any truss plate will be expelled from the lumber in the swelling/shrinking of the wood fiber that accompanies these cycles. Could this possibly be OK? 5. Is the wood exposed to some sort of corrosive environment, outside the corrosive salts used in the pressure treatment of the lumber itself? Is the treated lumber then kiln dried after treatment (KDAT)? 6. Will the lumber stay dry in the finished exposure or environment? I like to end the line of questioning with “Will the lumber stay dry in the finished environment?” as it then begs the question, “If so, why the added expense of PT?” It just happened that my caller this morning was calling in from Canada, where their standard plates are made from G90 galvanized steel versus the G60 commonly used in the US. That aside, the questions above all still remain. It is well known that the wetting and drying of embedded truss plates will eventually expel them from the wood. If the final application is going to be exterior, or some other scenario where there will be constant wetting and drying, the answer again would be no. What if the application is wet and the embedded truss plates will stay constantly wet? We can design with the assumptions for green (wet) lumber and make the appropriate adjustments for the wood members (see ANSI/TPI 1, Sections 6.4.6 – 6.4.9) but what about the pressure treating chemicals? How corrosive are they in the wet environment? Perhaps then it would be necessary to contact the wood treater to get a definitive answer. What about other environmental corrosion issues? TPI 1 addresses some in Section 6.5, where we are looking to provide increased corrosion protection to metal connector plates. Remember, when using any of the recognized coatings, all surfaces of the connector plates left exposed (front and back sides of all plates and exposed teeth) must be covered with the selected coating in the minimum thickness recommended by the supplier. The point is that sometimes we don’t know the correct answer until we dig a little deeper and know exactly what issues we’re dealing with. For me, the short answer is no, and often the long answer is also no, unless we can get a very explicit specification to limit my scope of work risks. May the New Year bring good health and much prosperity your way. Thanks for reading, SS PHONE: 800-289-5627

Valuing Relationships in Business

Obviously, we all make decisions based on value. Cost vs. benefit. Risk vs. reward. But too often, we are all encouraged to think of value only in terms of dollars and cents. Too be sure, money plays a big part, but it’s not always simple and straightforward. Building Relationships After moving to Oklahoma, I applied for a job in the membership department of the Chamber of Commerce. Folks who know me will remember that I’m very committed to my members, and I take my job in membership service very seriously and personally. The interviewer, however, was determined to have me look at the job simply as sales and explain how I would convert no to yes. To her chagrin, I answered with this: It is never just a matter of a simple yes or no at a given point in time; membership is developing long-term relationships. People do not need a slick salesman; they need a friend and a resource to provide direct and indirect services and support. By focusing on individuals and not on dollars, you will make lasting connections, build community, and grow an organization.

Needless to say, I was not offered a position with that group. But what kind of group can it be if, at the end of the day, the primary thing of value is still only the money? Commitment and Determination Here at The Advertiser, I don’t expect to be perfect. I won’t have all of the answers, and everyone won’t agree with the things I say. But as long as I’m here, I’m committed to doing the best I can for our group. Tell me what you think, and I will listen. Tell me what you want, and I will try to make it happen. New Year, New Ideas I’ve never made a New Year’s Resolution, so I don’t intend to start now. But a new year is a great time to reflect on what we might like to see in the coming year. Please consider giving me your input, feedback, criticisms, suggestions, and just plain thoughts on what you’d like to see in these pages, and/or online, and/or face-to-face in the months ahead. Bearing Lubrication Bearing lubrication is essential to the longevity of the equipment’s lifespan. Proper lubrication will assist in reducing bearing failures and keep the production equipment producing revenue. There are many factors that contribute to inadequate lubrication, today we will focus on just two. Lubrication serves three purposes: 1. Separating the mating surfaces to reduce friction 2. Transfer of heat 3. Corrosion resistance Over filling and under filling are the two most common issues our staff discover on site. It is common to find a machine bearing dripping and oozing grease throughout the factory. A bearing oozing grease is prone to rapid failure. This is a clear sign of over filling or over lubricating a bearing. Over filling a bearing is as detrimental as starving or under filling a bearing. Over filling a bearing can cause excessive heat buildup in the bearing by limiting the roller bearings/ ball bearing rotational capacity or preventing the heat from dissipating correctly. Excessive grease will oxidize over time. Oxidized grease tends to darken, become hard, thus trapping heat inside the bearing. Wipe the excess and oxidized grease away from the bearing surface to allow proper heat dissipation from the bearing. When inspecting a bearing failure, over filling will often create a flat spot on the roller bearing or the ball bearings; therefore, creating the excessive heat and wear that leads to the premature failure.

Under filling a bearing with lubrication works in much the same way. Excess heat is generated by steel on steel contact. This results in excessive wear, possibly deformation of one or more of the mating surfaces. It is not uncommon to find metal debris located near the area or within the bearing itself. There are three primary ways to lubricate bearings on equipment. The first, and certainly most common, is the act of manually lubricating bearings. The staff travels from machine to machine lubricating each point as directed by the manufacturer’s direction. The second, is a lubrication system wherein, each bearing’s lubrication point is brought to a central lubrication system that commonly lubricates all points simultaneously. The third, and rapidly becoming my favorite, is a solid lubricant. Square 1 Design & Manufacture Inc. has been testing a Microporous Polymeric Lubricant (MPL) for the last two years with zero bearing failures. This microporous polymer allows lubricant to flow through the pores adding and reabsorbing the lubricant to the bearing surfaces as needed. Thus eliminating the need to manually grease bearings throughout the factory. Many applications inside the factory allow for the addition of MPLs. We are certain, we are among the first to bring another solution to the truss and panel market. We look forward to offering MPL bearings on additional lines of new equipment in the near future. Do you know how well your company did in comparison to the average? Perhaps you are not privy to such information, but maybe you know that things need further improvement. If improvement is actually your goal for this new year, maybe you should consider doing something different instead of repeating the same processes and expecting different results. Everyone should ask, “What are some of the things that prevent serious improvement from happening within my group?” Time and/or money are excuses many offer as the main reasons for not trying something different. Others say, “I need to find the right individual(s) to move us in the right direction.” If you feel these are your main obstacles, your company is more than likely going to continue repeating the same patterns and garner the same results it has always achieved. So what is preventing any company, department, or individual from making real, positive changes to garner better results? There are two main obstacles that must be overcome: pride and admitting you don’t have all the answers. According to psychology studies, “Modern cognitive theory states that people tend to perceive reality in light of pre-existing expectations and will ignore large amounts of contrary data before finally changing their minds.” In other words, we perceive the world the way we want regardless of the evidence showing it differently. Why is this so often the case? The answer is simple but hard to overcome. In one word, it is pride. We cannot see that change is needed, or if we do indeed recognize the changes needed, our pride blinds us and prevents us from admitting it. We allow our pride to perceive everything as being right or wrong, as if by admitting that a change is actually wanted or needed, we are saying, “We were wrong and they were right.” This is an absurd way of viewing life in general. What worked in the past was a good thing, but evolving to meet the challenges of today does, in fact, require us to make changes and see things from a new perspective. To embrace better ideas, one needs to set aside pride and actually listen to others with a different perspective and experience. I can tell you from experience that I have seen the results, time after time, and that making positive changes garners significant net-profit gains that many are simply blind to. Had they implemented the changes without an outsider making the suggestions, they would indeed have gotten the same results, but they had roadblocks of simply not knowing and/or pride that prevented them from admitting that the changes were needed. What are some good resources to start educating yourself and learning new ideas? Reading or listening to audio books is always a good starting point. Examples: The Goal by Goldratt covers theory of constraints, any of the Dale Carnegie publications covers better management practices, and any books covering lean manufacturing will assist process improvement. Also, seminars at your local colleges and online training on the above topics can help. In other words, start by looking outside our industry for better practices! An all too common, repeated mistake everyone seems to make is to only listen to the equipment and plate vendors, but how effective has that been going for you? Yes, many of you feel that you have developed a close and trusting relationship with them and they have witnessed many different operations. But be honest with yourself and ask, “When the last time any of the vendors told you that you were making serious mistakes and really challenged your current practices?” The answer is never. The last thing they want to do is possibly threaten a future sale. Also, they tend to go with the latest popular practice that some of the so-called industry leaders are embracing without truly understanding the pros and cons. A disheartening example of this is witnessing clients explain how their three-man assembly team easily outpaced their very

of all the equipment being offered. Sometimes no new equipment is needed when processes are changed.  "Every component manufacturer looks to their plate/equipment supplier to help them solve some particular area of their production, like a new saw or table. Todd was able to look at our existing equipment, explain how to get more with what we have without changes, or modify what we have to get even more and finally recommend different types of new equipment purchases to get the most for our money. He gave us multiple alternatives with different level of risk and potential gains. Taft Ketchum, PDJ Components  Linear Saw Time Spreadsheet – 11 different types for expected productivity. Large productivity differences!

expensive, brand-new linear saw for common-run trusses. Yet the latest trend is to advise everyone to have a dedicated linear saw with a build team for all of the cutting and assembly lines. (See December’s article: Increasing Net Profit While Sacrificing Labor Efficiencies?) This may seem odd, but what about learning from someone who actually makes a living by giving advice and challenging your current practices: someone who’s actual, full-time occupation is to constantly read, review, and test the best practices within our industry and can teach your people better methods? A person, who, when offering advice, must back up the advice with proven methods that follow all of the lean-manufacturing and time-study practices. That person is me. I am a paid, lean-manufacturing consultant who has spent an entire week in 85+ different companies. Just imagine the knowledge anyone could garner if they spent that kind of time in 85+ different companies, challenging their practices and offering solutions. One tends to learn from each consult and take that new information to the next. But just a warning about other services: a free consultation from some outside consultants is like a cheap public defender: not worth the time, even though they were free. The most common statement I have heard from clients is, “You sure are not the typical B.S. consultant(s) we tried before. It is obvious to everyone you are a truss guy and know what you are talking about.” Always get referrals and do your due diligence before wasting your time and money on any consultant. Like any other investment, it is all about the return you get for the time and money you spent versus what you actually gained. The good ones are worth every penny. Long story short, pride can blind us all from seeing and learning things from a new perspective. Expecting different results from doing the same thing is foolish. Instead, we should all be smart enough to know that we do not know everything, and that we should look to others to find that missing knowledge and better ideas. PHONE: 800-289-5627

2016……Wait….What?!?! That was my reaction when I realized last week that 2016 was right around the corner. Well, actually I hit a stark realization around the middle of December when I had a birthday and could not figure out how I got here. You know, to this place in time. It seems like yesterday that I was a hairy legged punk kid racing around on my motorcycle. But, that is another story. 1999 ASI/Haulin 42'-60' So, sitting at my computer to write this article, I started thinking Expandable Trailer about how we all got to 2016. The last 10 years had a little of everything. •Hydraulic Lift Neck We were all riding high when economic disaster struck. Then came the •Sliding Tandem Axles lean years where we all tried to figure out why we bought that last brand new piece of equipment instead of •Air Lift Load Control looking at good used equipment…..oh yes…..I remember…..we were riding high…..making money….letting •DOT is not current ego get in the way of sound business decisions…….that’s it. Then we all focused on pulling in the reins and $8,500 FOB IL. Wasserman & Associates worked hard at staying in business. We learned how to do much more with fewer people. Everyone became 800-382-0329 more productive and more knowledgeable about their business. Instead of making money by accident we www.wasserman-associates.com became experts in cost control. We all learned how to manage debt service and how to make a profit in the toughest of times. Then as things started to come back economically we would not let ourselves be deceived. We were absolutely going to be more cautious. We were going to maximize efforts with existing equipment and be certain that we needed more before even looking at a purchase. Could we squeeze another board foot of production from existing equipment? So, here we are. In speaking with a number of equipment manufacturers and salespeople I have learned a great deal. One of the things I learned is that I have a friend that must be an equipment savant. He called it way before anyone else. He said, “Look, everyone has been holding off on buying equipment. When the economy stabilizes the first equipment to be purchased will be saws. They are all using older technology and they will want to 2015 Precision Equipment get more productivity with a newer saw.” He was correct. First, all of the used saws left the market. They Roll-Off Trailers sold out quickly. A lot of good solid used equipment went overseas. It didn’t take long before orders for 40', 48' and 53' Fixed Lengths. 36' to 51', new saws started piling up. All of my friends in the saw business tell me they are 9-18 months out on saw 42' to 60', 46' to 64', 50' to 70' and 53' to 80' deliveries. I know, right?......it sounds absolutely insane. My “savant buddy” explained his thoughts further Expandable Lengths. 102" Wide. Air Lift by saying, “Pressing equipment, like gantry systems, will last a while longer, if maintained properly.” That ICC Bumper. Self Contained Hydraulic is true. Most pressing equipment will outlast a saw. But, now that we have some positive growth behind us, Power Unit. Spring Loaded Composite component manufacturers will start looking at upgrading presses and other production equipment. Finding Fenders. Dual Rear Rollers. New Low Pro Tires. Air Operated Roller Pin Lock System. the right equipment is the primary concern. Air Operated Load Control System. Sliding In the past we all witnessed companies automating simply for the sake of automation. They didn’t really Air Ride Suspension. Strobe Lighting. improve their throughput, they just automated and capacity remained static. A lot of companies automated Mesh Between All Rollers. Patented Load before the downturn and took on a pile of debt. This forced some of those companies out of business. Lifts. LED Lighting System. ExtendThey couldn’t manage the debt load when the economy moved in a negative direction. I place a lot of the a-Rail. 4" x 35' Load Straps. Patented responsibility on slick salespeople that didn’t evaluate the need of the manufacturer. They were simply making Strap Locks. Strap Winches. Dove Tail a sale. Of course, the buyer must take some responsibility as well. Evaluate your need. Do you really need on Rear of Trailer. Hydraulic King Pin the most automated, most expensive piece of equipment? What is the return on investment? Can you reduce Plate. Removable Headache Rack. 7 Way labor with the new equipment? Will the new equipment increase productivity? Do you have other bottlenecks Receptacle on Rear of Trailer. Split Rollers. Sliding Winch System. Aluminum Tool Box. that limit your productivity? These are all questions that must be asked and answered before deciding on any Trailer is Sandblasted & Primed with PPG purchase. That goes for buying new or used equipment. Polyurethane Paint Wasserman & Associates There are a lot of very bright people out there working as consultants that can provide an objective 800-382-0329 outside perspective. Yes, it costs money to have consultants provide an evaluation and recommendation. But, www.wasserman-associates.com it could be far less expensive than overreaching on a piece of equipment that isn’t going to provide the result you are trying to achieve. Reach out to your key people internally and ask for a solid reason for a new piece of equipment. Also, use your relationships with key suppliers for their opinion. If they have the best interest of your business in mind they will give you good solid information and not try to simply make another sale. Many of your suppliers have worked on both sides of the industry and have experience that could be very helpful in evaluating needs. So, there we have it. How we got here and how we should move forward. Move deliberately. Move cautiously. Make investments in your business carefully and with as much input as you can. Be certain that if the economy takes a step back (as it most surely will) that you have your debt structured in such a way that you will be able to remain in business and profitable. It all sounds pretty simple. Make a sign and post it in places you will see it every day. The sign should be simple. Mine simply says, “Think”. Those of you that Th e know me must be wondering about that……now, about that motorcycle story….. Component Manufacturing

FASTENERS SIMPLIFY WIND-UPLIFT RESTRAINT Door & Stair

Building homes and structures with a continuous load path in regions of the country susceptible to high winds can now be accomplished from inside the structure with easy-to-install fasteners. Strong-Drive® SDWC Screws Truss/Rafter-toPlate Connection and Stud-to-Plate Connection

Tried-and-true metal connectors, fasteners and anchors are traditionally used as a system to connect the roof, floors and foundation together. But now there’s another choice. Simpson Strong-Tie offers two structural fasteners designed for wind-uplift restraint: the Strong-Drive® SDWF Floor-to-Floor screw and the Strong-Drive® SDWC Truss screw. There are several key benefits to using structural fasteners for continuous load path connections, including: • • • • •

Fast installations (significantly fastener than traditional methods) No predrilling No interference with finish materials Floor-to-floor framing alignment is not critical Ease of installation: The SDWC and SDWF install from inside the structure, eliminating exterior work on upper stories

Wind-Uplift Restraint

For illustrative purposes only. See installation specifications.

The Strong-Drive SDWC Truss screw provides a stud-to-bottom-plate or stud-to-top-plate connection and can be used to fasten trusses and rafters to top plates. It is designed to simplify continuous load path connections at the roof and foundation. The SDWC is available in a kit that includes 500 screws, two driver bits and two metal installation guides. The SDWC screw is code compliant (IAPMO-UES ER-262) and is for interior use only. The Strong Drive SDWF Floor-to-Floor screw attaches upper and lower walls together from the top, spanning the floor system to create a strong connection between floors. When used with the TUW take-up washer, the SDWF screw simplifies the floor-to-floor winduplift restraint connection. The patented TUW take-up washer plays a key role in the long-term performance of the SDWF Floor-to-Floor screw when installed between the screw and the sole plate of the upper floor. As the structure settles because of shrinkage and construction loading, the threaded portion under the head of the screw ratchets up through the tabs of the TUW. The interlock between the tabs of the take-up washer and the threads under the head of the SDWF screw prevents the screw from sliding back under load. This provides a simple yet reliable means of shrinkage compensation for up to 3 ⁄4" per story. The SDWF screw is code compliant (ICC-ES ESR-3046), as is the TUW take-up washer (ICC-ES ESR-2320) – both are for interior use only. When used together as a system with anchor bolts at the foundation, the SDWC and SDWF screws are a reliable, safe and economical solution for creating a continuous load path and resisting wind uplift. To learn more, call (800) 999-5099 and visit strongtie.com/sdwc.

Celebrating 30 Years of Softwood Framing Lumber Market Analyses and Forecasts

LAYMAN'S LUMBER GUIDE

North American Softwood Lumber Market Evaluation

Matt Layman, Publisher

Lumber Market Strategy Report Card: How Did Layman's Lumber Forecasts Do In 2015? A couple of weeks ago Thom McAnally, publisher of Component Advertiser, asked if I would write a summary of how following Layman's Lumber Guide Forecasts helped/ or could have helped you in 2015. My first inclination was to create the graph below to determine that 37 of 52 weeks, our lumber market moved as forecasted...in sync with the Forecasted Decision Points trend...71% of the time. That forecast is projected weekly...one year in advance. Not too shabby. Then it occurred to me that this did not answer Thom's question. "How did, or could, Layman's Guide forecasts help you?" When I first began publishing a lumber market analysis back in 1985, my focus was on when buyers, even producers, should accumulate or liquidate excessive inventory to take advantage of the major up or down trends. As the years passed, taking those risky positions has become less palatable for lumber buyers. Inventory turns have become more important. Therefore, my suggested strategies have evolved to include long term, as well as timely, weekly recommendations. The graph below shows where the long term forecasts hit and where they missed in 2015. What it does not illustrate is how "you", specifically, can benefit from Layman's Lumber Guide on a weekly basis. Regardless of the long term forecasts, the weekly strategies hone in on whether you should buy early in the coming week in rising markets, or late in the coming week in falling markets. Why is that so important? On weeks that prices change, that average change is $9 per thousand board feet...either up or down. That is over $200 per truckload to be made or saved. How many trucks of lumber did you buy in 2015? That is how Layman's Lumber Guide can, and will, help you. 2016 will be an exciting year for housing and softwood framing lumber. Production is under control. Mortgage rates are creeping higher. Housing is gaining upward momentum. Not only is Layman's Guide your only weekly lumber market forecast, it is your best. There is no other weekly and long term lumber market forecast that projects when prices will change direction, rise and fall, and accelerate momentum. The weekly buying strategies will help you keep your inventory turns and take advantage of price volatility. Let's talk. matt@laymansguide.org. 336-516-6684

Safe Lifting Techniques

The back is a network of fragile ligaments, discs, and muscles which can easily be thrown out of order. The back’s complex design breaks down when it’s forced to perform activities it was not designed to do. Lifting with the back twisted or bent just begs for a pulled muscle or ruptured disc. One sure way to risk injuring the back is to lift heavy or bulky loads improperly or unassisted. Never be afraid to ask for help with loads that you know you cannot lift safely. Lift with good sense and a little extra help from a co-worker or mechanical aid when necessary.

If you decide you are capable of lifting a light load, make sure you lift correctly. •

Move in so that your feet are close to the base of the object to be lifted.

Face the object squarely. Bend your knees and squat over the item to be lifted. In this position, the back gets added lifting strength and power from the legs and arms.

Move up close to the item, because the backbone must act as a supporting column, and it takes the least strain close in.

Tilt the item on edge with its long axis straight up so that the center of the weight is as high as possible above the ground.

Still squatting, the feet should be set with legs pointed right at the load, with the back straightened, the worker may then grasp the load with both arms and slowly stand up with it, pushing up with the leg muscles. If you can’t lift slowly, you can’t lift safely.

A good way to learn the right from the wrong way to lift is to practice lifting correctly a few times. You will notice that the correct way to lift is the easiest way to lift the load, with the least strain and awkwardness. To lift the wrong way will, over time, cause injury and pain. The back can be damaged quickly but can take a long time to heal.

The Last Word...

Enriching Our Work From a Distance

This time of year, when most job changes occur, we need to especially engage our remote employees. We must nurture, retain and recruit more of these people who don’t have an office, but have become the backbone of many companies. Truss designers, bookkeepers, and IT people increasingly work very effectively at home. While technology is the great enabler of this trend, it is no substitute for face-to-face interaction. As we begin a new year, having just spent more time with our families, we may feel more anxious about our jobs. We realize that our ability to provide for our families depends in large part on our relationship with our bosses and coworkers. To those of us fortunate few, our company has been part of our lives longer than the family we live with.

Having been outside of an office for 30+ years, here is what I work hard to be: 1. Pro-active. My job is to find out, and not wait for someone to tell me. 2. Grateful. Express gratitude for orders received, work done, and opportunities received. 3. Contributor. Doing more than asked. Adding something more than what is required. 4. Rewarding. Paying compliments at times least expected, not just when something is done for me. 5. Personal. Set aside time to be personally with your boss and those who report to you. 6. Nurturing. Discussing how to improve on shortcomings. The hardest, least practiced, but most long-lasting attribute is the final one; nurturing. This is criticism with a purpose. I remember the very few times in my career that someone nurtured me after I made a serious mistake at work. But I remember even more vividly when I was fired or demoted. After my bruised ego recovered somewhat, I was usually able to understand, and eventually accept, or even thank my boss for helping me improve.

To test your application of the above attributes, ask yourself the following questions: A. Do you always speak of your employer in the first person using the pronouns “I” or “we”, never “they”? B. Do you say “I’ll find out” when you don’t know the answer to a question instead of passing the buck. C. Do you ever accuse someone as being a poor communicator, when you should have known to ask? D. Did you go out of your way to resolve a problem or conflict, rather than just reacting? E. Do you ask your boss and the people who report to you, “How am I doing?” Managing just yourself, or a group of people, is a challenging task. But this New Year will be better if we all make a conscious effort to practice at it. Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com
