Looking beyond well-intentioned statements and monuments, acclaimed scholar Andrew I. Port will discuss how the Holocaust shaped German responses to modern-day genocides in other countries after 1945.
Through this discussion, he will also highlight how these foreign atrocities recast Germany’s understanding of its own horrific history.
Refreshments will be served.

ARNOLD ZUROFF
was beloved by everyone he met...from his Jewish community, to his dental community, among his friends everywhere, and especially among his family. His great sense of humor, his boundless enthusiasm, and his huge heart were recognized and appreciated by all. Arnold was fortunate - he loved his work, because it gave him a vehicle to express his compassion and his sense of humor as he greeted each day and each patient with joy. He truly loved people and his work as an endodontist allowed him to interact with all kinds of people. Arnold was a real baal chesed, providing treatment free of charge to Jewish people from around the world.
Arnold was also fortunate to be blessed with his life partner - his wife Joanne. She enables and encouraged him to do chesed through his work. Many of the people that Arnold first met in the dental chair eventually found themselves at a Shabbat meal or Passover seder at the Zuroff home, as Joanne also contributed from her own wellspring of chesed.
Arnold had a passion for golf, which provided him hours of joy in the outdoors and precious time with golf buddies on the course. This time was especially important to him after the loss of his wife, Joanne. He was widely known for his creative approach to the rules of golf, but since he was so widely loved, no one ever complained. Although Arnold was able to find a way to provide dental care free of charge in his own practice, not every dentist is able to do that. It is this model of chesed that is the inspiration for the JEWISH DENTAL CLINIC.
HAROLD LURIA
, a member of Alpha Omega for almost 70 years, exemplified excellence in dentistry while treating patients like family during his 50 year career. Known for the practice of painless dentistry, he was the 'dentists' dentist', having the ability to reconstruct the most difficult patient, while still promoting patient comfort and positive rapport. He was instrumental in the conception of continuing education programming during the infancy of the Detroit District Dental Society. Harold also served as the International President of the Academy of Dental Practice Administration. Dr Luria set a tone during his life of utilizing new techniques, integrating holistic health into the practice of dentistry, and providing the best care. Harold and Esther, his wife of more than 50 years, lived a holistic lifestyle, dedicating themselves to healthy foods and exercise long before such life choices were in vogue. He enjoyed good food, a good book, a strong cuppa Joe, and loved playing golf with his three sons. He was an exemplary role model with two of his sons and one grandson following in his footsteps. To be sure, his were big shoes to fill! Even late in his life, he still was exercising , eating well, and loved to visit Greystone Golf Club, in which he proudly shared part ownership. A great day for Harold in his retirement was taking in a round or two of golf and shmoozing with the employees. He was enthusiastic and passionate about all that he endeavored to achieve, making a profound difference in the lives of many through his dentistry, healthy beliefs, and his love of family and friends.

This is Shemitah produce and should not be purchased. If already purchased, consult your Rav for guidance.
GREEK STYLE PITA BREAD from Kordas / Metropolitan Baking Co. that does not bear the K-COR symbol, or that has the symbol covered by a sticker, is not certified by the Council of Orthodox Rabbis / Vaad Harabbonim.
BELL PEPPERS and MINI PEPPERS of all colors, domestic and imported, have recently been found to have a high level of infestation on their exterior surface, especially around the stem. Kashrus agencies are recommending the following procedure:
1. Remove and discard the stem/crown section.
2. Turn the pepper upside down and wash the entire surface, including the crevices and the bottom depression, under a strong str eam of water while rubbing with one’s fingers.
3. If the crevices and/or the bottom depression are not entirely reachable, first cut the pepper at its length into four and then wash as described above. Alternatively, use a small brush while washing.
4. Peppers should not be cooked, roasted, or eaten whole with the stem/crown section still attached.
SUGAR SNAP PEAS and SNOW PEAS: Last year it was discovered that these are infested with thrips on the outside of the pods Currently, there are various opinions among the Kashrus agencies regarding washed, unwashed and frozen types, with some not recommending their use, and others allowing them with certain washing procedures. Regarding unwashed types, at the very minimum the following procedure is required:
1. Agitate the snap/snow peas in soapy water for 30 seconds.
2. Let them soak in the soapy water for at least one minute.
3. Rinse very thoroughly under a strong stream of water.
THE FOLLOWING NEW SODAS are Kosher and pareve (no symbol required):

Many TRADER JOE’S ORGANIC LOLLIPOPS that are offered locally to children at the checkout counters do not bear Kosher marking. Only those bearing the Kof-K symbol should be accepted as Kosher.
SNAPPLE ELEMENTS “FIRE” DRAGON FRUIT JUICE DRINK contains grape juice. It is not Kosher certified and does not bear an OK. Only those Snapple drinks that bear the OK symbol are Kosher. (Also check for their pareve / dairy status. A plain OK symbol indicates pareve; OK-D = dairy; OK-DE = dairy equipment.)
RED GOLD TOMATO KETCHUP in 1 oz. “DUNK” [dipping] CUPS, a Foodservice item, is not OU certified and does not bear an OU. Only Red Gold products that bear the OU symbol are OU certified.
FRIENDLY FARMS ALMOND MILK, COCONUT MILK and OAT MILK sold at Aldi bear a plain OU on some containers and are pareve (mfd. at Plant # JP). Other containers bear OU-D and are dairy equipment (Plant # 18-388). Check each container carefully.

Supervise your swimmers: A parent/caregiver must be “within arms reach” of their non-swimming child at all times.
Avoid distractions: A Cell phone should be available for emergencies only, not to call or text friends. It only takes seconds for a child to go underwater.
Floaties, life jackets and puddle jumpers do not replace a parent being within arms reach of their child. Babies and toddlers have fallen face down and have gone under water in this equipment.
Secure your pool: Install a solid 5 foot fence with no gaps or areas that a child could climb over. Make sure the gate is self-closing and selflatching. The latch should be open outward and be out of your child’s reach.
Even adults should never swim alone. Teach your child to swim with a buddy and always with a lifeguard or an adult watching. Never assume that another child can safely watch your child in the water.
Choose from the huge variety of updated styles on our user-friendly website. A representative will contact you to bring your invitation to perfection.
It’s that easy.
YOUR STEPIN' STYLE YOUR STEPIN' STYLE
Howgood are you at identifying people by their walk? Maybe, from afar, you spotted someone you knew, but his swagger indicated otherwise? Conversely, although he had his hood up, you knew who it was by that characteristic stride.
Our movement pattern is unique to each of us. We don't all walk the same. Sometimes, a distinct walking style may be a gait abnormality that indicates poor balance and/or poor posture. Below are 4 aspects of the perfect walk. If you find any of these difficult to maintain, you may have muscle-weakness or tightness. As we can't easily see ourselves walking, I suggest you ask someone to observe you with this list in mind:
1.Feet: parallel and forward facing
2.Shoulders down and back, away from ears, leading with chest
3.Heel-to-toe roll: heel strike and roll off of big toe
4.Arm swing: from shoulders, elbows slightly bent
Limitations in any of the above areas are possibly due to a previous injury, for example - compensation for the discomfort leads to a negative change in your walking style, which then becomes a poor walking habit. Remaining seated for long periods of time is another common cause of poor walking form.

CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES, ETERNAL VALUES
Ingredients:
6 medium bone-in chicken thighs (~2 lb)
1 tsp sea salt
3/4 tsp paprika
3/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
Directions:
Pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towels.
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp margarine
3/4 cup chicken broth, reduced sodium
Season chicken thighs on both sides with sea salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken in a single layer, skin side down. Sear chicken thighs for 3-5 minutes, until the bottom side is golden brown and crispy.
Flip the chicken and sear for 3-5 more minutes, until golden brown on the other side. Add the chicken broth and margarine to the pan, around the chicken but not directly over the skin. Move the margarine around, until melted.
Reduce heat to medium-low and cover the pan with a lid. Cook chicken thighs on the stovetop for 4-8 more minutes.
Transfer the chicken from the pan to a plate. Rest for 5 minutes before serving with the pan sauce.
