Weight Training

If you believe that strength training is a sport for only the brauny, think again. Lifting light weights won't bulk up your muscles, but it will keep them strong. As we age we lose muscle mass hence our metabolism slows. A great way to increase metabolism is to keep muscles strong. I recommend 10 minutes of weight training 3 times a week.

A few guidlines: 1. Before starting a weight training program, be sure to learn the proper form to avoid injury. Men, start with just 5-10 lbs. Women, one to two lbs. You should be able to lift the weights 10 times with ease. After a couple of weeks, increase that by a pound or two. If you can easily lift the weights through the entire range of motion more than 12 times, move up to slightly heavier weight. You can learn good form through a class or one-on-one sessions with a certified exercise professional.

2. Breathe out when you are lifting or pushing; breathe in as you slowly release the load or weight. Never hold your breath while straining.

3. DOMS (Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness) is common when weight training as a new activity.

As with all exercise, consult a physician if there is a concern.
