Who’s Raising These Kids?!

How can I clean for Pesach while a crew of kids are wreaking havoc? How can a Pesach Seder be meaningful if it keeps getting interrupted by children of all ages?

How can I plan a memorable Chol Hamoed trip with every one of my kids making it abundantly clear that nothing will make them happy?

As a wise man once said, “It’s much easier to raise a family without kids! ” And that is the epiphany. If children were born perfect, there would be nothing to raise up. If parents were perfect, they would gain nothing from raising children.

Rabbi Daniel Kalisch points out the fallacy of wishing a child to be a tzadik. The goal is not to be a tzadik, the goal is to become a tzadik! And each baby step in that direction is an opportunity for the parents to lead the way.

For every neshama that journeys through this world, Hashem takes two partners who will be responsible to set this neshama up for success. From the entire Jewish nation, you, the parents have been selected.

This is perhaps the greatest of all the tasks that we carry as a Yid; in the words of Chazal, the mitzva rabba. And like all mitzvos, it is designed to elevate us to a closer connection with Hashem.

Parents have so many responsibilities. There is carpool multiple times a day, meals multiple times a day, and bedtime way too many times a day. It is so easy to get bogged down in the soap suds and lose sight of the dishes.

All of the hectic preparations, family time, and Yom Tov seudos are golden moments that lead toward becoming a tzadik. Late night potato peeling DMCs, Seder minhagim and singing together, family get togethers and outings are all meaningful and beautiful steps in raising up your family.

Real personal growth, however, requires struggle. When tension builds, lean in and channel it upward. Instead of cowering under the stress, embrace it. You can guide your children to a positive resolution.

That ke’ara might not shine as you dreamed, you may not get to share that inspirational dvar Torah, and the neighbors went on a much better trip than you. Your confident insistence that your child cleans up, your calm response to a tantrum, and your clarity on your family’s approach to luxuries are far more impactful.

Hashem gives us everything that we need to grow. Including our children.

New MOUNTAIN DEW BAJA BLAST soda, a limitedtime release, is Kosher.

SNAPPLE FRUIT PUNCH JUICE DRINK normally does not bear an OK symbol because it contains grape juice that may not be Kosher. Recently, special arrangement was made for temporary approval of Snapple Fruit Punch, only for 64 oz. containers produced between March - May 2014, and only when bearing the OK symbol. There are also other Snapple varieties that are not certified, plus some that may be dairy or dairy equipment. Each bottle or can should be checked carefully for the OK symbol and its Pareve / Dairy status.

RECANATI WINE of 2022 vintage was mistakenly sold locally. It is a Shemitah product and is not recommended due to Shemitah concerns (and it therefore does not bear the OU symbol)

New MOUNTAIN DEW SOLAR FLARE fountain soda, available exclusively at 7-Eleven, is Kosher.

bears MK Pareve certification. Product of the U.S. plant bears a different certification and is certified Dairy. Consumers should check each package for its correct status, as stores alternate between Canadian and U.S. product.

POMEGRANATES: U.S. grown pomegranates are currently out of season, and many stores are now selling pomegranates from Israel (that is nearing the end of its pomegranate season), which require taking of Terumos and Maaseros. The country of origin will be listed on the original case. It may not be listed on the stickers of the individual fruits.

SOPHIA PITA BREAD is Kosher (not Pas Yisroel) only when bearing the K-COR symbol. Some Sophia pita bread not bearing the K-COR is made by a non-Kosher plant.

SHURFINE brand CHILI LIME ALMONDS contains dairy ingredients, as stated in the ingredient listing, but some packages mistakenly bear a plain OU without a D.

THOMAS ENGLISH MUFFIN TOASTING

GREENFIELD NOODLE CO. has exhausted its stock of Yoshon flour. New product is using Chodosh flour and does not state “Yoshon” next to the expiration date. Product that still states Yoshon is in fact Yoshon.

7-ELEVEN AT LINCOLN & GREENFIELD in Oak Park now has COR certification for all three of its slurpee machines.

REMINDER - The following products are no longer Pas Yisroel. They continue to be certified Kosher when bearing the K-COR symbol:

PITA BREAD • under the following labels: TANURI (American Bakery), MEIJER, PERFECTION DELI, SOPHIA, and TRADER JOE’S. This applies to all packages that have a date of APR 14 or later on their plastic closure, except for the Trader Joe’s brand for which the date is APR 12.

BREAD: A limited amount was inadvertently labeled with the Kof-K Dairy logo. This bread contains dairy ingredients and is not certified by the Kof-K.

ROSEN'S brand BAGELS produced by Alpha Baking Co. are no longer OU certified. Rosen's breads and buns bearing the OU symbol on the packaging continue to be OU Pareve certified [COR Note: and are Pas Yisroel - glow-bar method]

SLURPEE FLAVOR CARDS on slurpee machines at 7-Eleven stores bear an OU symbol on some varieties. Please be advised that while the OU certifies many Coca-Cola and Fanta brand varieties of frozen beverage syrups, this certification applies only to the original box of syrup manufactured by Coca-Cola. The OU does not provide store level supervision to guarantee that a store is using certified syrup for the slurpee products that bear these flavor cards. Stores sometimes use syrups that do not correspond with the brand and variety posted on the machine.

Some 12 oz. jars labeled as ELF brand HERRING FILLETS IN WINE SAUCE - OU actually contain HERRING FILLETS IN SOUR CREAM - OU-D and have been recalled. The mislabeled product has a Best Before date of 21 May 14 and lot number 03553, and will be obvious to the consumer because the white sour cream sauce can be seen through the clear plastic jar. Properly labeled Elf Herring Fillets in Wine Sauce product has a clear sauce. For more information, call Vita Food Products at 800-989-8482.

WONDER MILLS WHITE SPELT FLOUR from Israel with a date code of June 12, 2023 [“12/06/23”European format] has been found to be infested, and should not be used without sifting.

LAWASH brand FLATBREAD • from American Bakery Products that was manufactured after March 15. The date of manufacture can be determined by the last six digits of the manufacturing code stamped on the bag; e.g., 031514 = March 15, 2014.

PESACH ALERT

KRAFT STRING CHEESE PRODUCTS have OU Dairy certification on the following varieties, only when bearing the OU-D: Kraft String Cheese 2% Milk Mozzarella, Kraft String Cheese Cracked Black Pepper, Kraft String Cheese Jalapeno, Kraft String Cheese Tomato Basil, and Twists Mozzarella & Cheddar. Packages bearing a KD are not recommended.

TARGET FRUIT FLAVORED ANTACID, and CVS STRAWBERRY FLAVORED and ASSORTED FRUIT FLAVORED ANTACID contain carmine, an insect-derived coloring, but some packages were mistakenly labeled with an OU symbol. These products are not certified.

PACKAGES OF THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS WITHOUT PESACH MARKING were mistakenly placed in local stores’ Pesach sections. Check every label of your purchases for Pesach marking:

ORONOQUE ORCHARDS 9” DEEP DISH PIE

CRUSTS with UPC: 70427 13709 mistakenly do not bear the OU symbol on the most recent printing of packaging, but are nevertheless OU certified Kosher pareve.

Locally, the COR provides supervision for slurpees at four 7-Eleven stores, but only for certain machines in each store, as specified on the COR certificate posted there. (Lincoln & Greenfield: all three machines. 11 & Coolidge, 13 & Greenfield, and 11 & Lahser: only the left machine.) At nonsupervised stores, the COR recommends that the consumer verify, with the manager’s permission, that the box of syrup in the back which feeds the slurpee machine is a Kosher brand and variety, and also whether a non-Kosher or dairy flavor was used very recently in this same spigot, in which case there may still be a mixture in the barrel. (Stores generally do not clean the machine between flavors.) For your convenience, a Kosher slurpee list from the Chicago Rabbinical Council is available at http:// www.crcweb.org/Slurpee%20list.pdf .

• GEFEN ULTRA DISH SOAP LIQUID [Pesach containers bear OU-P. Non-Pesach containers bear a plain OU and state “Not for Passover use”.]

Remember – when shopping for Pesach, check every label for Pesach certification!

New BREYERS GELATO INDULGENCES in four flavors recently became Kof-K certified, and new product produced in the U.S. bears the Kof-K Dairy symbol on the bottom label. However, please be advised that there remains on the market a limited supply of product that was produced previously in Italy without supervision; this product states “Product of Italy” and does not bear the Kof-K, and should not be considered Kosher.

ROLLER BALL CANDY TYPE

COOL CUPS NATURAL GELS CUPS bear an unauthorized Kof-K symbol.

IPM brand CANNED MUSHROOMS from Limson Trading Inc. bear an unauthorized Kof-K symbol.

CHEESE SPREAD contains actual bacon and does not bear a Kosher symbol on the package. While at first the OK announced that many Kosher varieties of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Spreads would be affected by this change and would lose their certification, Kraft Foods has made adjustments to its process in response to consumers’ requests, and the currently certified varieties of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Spreads will remain Kosher and will continue bearing the OK-D symbol.

PRODUCT WARNINGS
