SUCCESS MEETS SUPPORT
2019–2020 ANNUAL REPORT
SUCCESS INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES, AS WELL AS RESPONSIVENESS TO STUDENT NEEDS, HAVE MADE COLLEGE OF DUPAGE ONE OF THE STRONGEST UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS IN THE STATE AND A VALUED AND RESPECTED COMMUNITY RESOURCE.
SUPPORT WITH THE ONGOING SUPPORT OF DONORS, THE COLLEGE OF DUPAGE FOUNDATION INVESTS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS, THE EXPANSION AND ENHANCEMENT OF PROGRAMS, AND OTHER EDUCATION ESSENTIALS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHO — WITH DETERMINATION AND PERSEVERANCE — TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION.
DEAR FRIENDS, On behalf of the College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation, thank you for your generous support over the last two years. College of DuPage is truly a community college, where everyone can benefit from its wide variety of academic, career/tech, and lifelong learning opportunities. But it wouldn’t be COD without the support of our generous donors, whose gifts make such a difference in the lives of our students. This past year has brought unprecedented challenges. With the onset of COVID-19, our students, like many across the country, have suffered from job and home losses, food insecurity, and health scares. Thanks to our individual, corporate, and private foundation donors, we have been able to respond quickly to these needs, providing emergency assistance funding to over 550 students — and we continue to seek funding to help our students stay in school and achieve their goals. Like the rest of the world, COD has faced other challenges, too. The McAninch Arts Center (MAC), our beloved destination for cultural and performing arts, had to cancel a portion of its spring season, move the current and upcoming seasons online, and postpone the exciting Frida Kahlo exhibition to 2021. Now entitled Frida Kahlo: Timeless, the exhibition will take place from June 5–September 6, 2021, and we hope you’ll join us for this amazing event. Your continued support of the MAC is so appreciated! Despite the struggles of the past year, we are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of our donors, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the engagement of community members who have shown us just how valued College of DuPage is.
WALTER J. JOHNSON VICE PRESIDENT, INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT COLLEGE OF DUPAGE

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 1
ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF DUPAGE FOUNDATION The College of DuPage Foundation strives to be an exemplary steward of philanthropic dollars, putting student success at the forefront. Founded in 1967, the COD Foundation serves College of DuPage by supporting educational innovations in programming and student support services, providing scholarships and awards to students, and recognizing both faculty and graduates. The COD Foundation works closely with the College’s Office of Institutional Advancement to raise the visibility of and resources for the College to address its long-term academic, cultural and institutional priorities.
DID YOU KNOW? • Over 8,250 donors support the College of DuPage Foundation.
The COD Foundation is dedicated to supporting the mission of COD to be a center of excellence in teaching, learning, and cultural experiences by providing accessible, affordable, and comprehensive education. By obtaining and stewarding financial and in-kind contributions, the Foundation helps expand educational and cultural opportunities for the College of DuPage community.
• The COD Foundation is led by 20 volunteer community and business leaders who share their vision and expertise to support the educational and cultural opportunities at COD.
Thanks to the ongoing commitment of COD supporters and friends, the COD Foundation has invested millions of dollars in student scholarships, the expansion and enhancement of programs, and other education essentials. As we continue to grapple with challenges related to COVID-19 and its economic fallout and work to rebuild a better future, our work continues to be important and donor support as vital as ever.

STUDENTS
SUCCESS Student success is the top priority at College of DuPage. The College of DuPage Foundation funds programs and services that aim to increase access to educational opportunity and help students progress through their programs to achieve their academic, personal and professional goals. The COD Foundation helps connect students with activities, resources, guidance, and other services to ensure their success. From clubs to athletics, the COD Foundation supports co-curricular activities and engagement opportunities that develop a student’s confidence beyond the classroom and maximize their potential.
The COD Foundation collaborates with faculty and staff to identify student needs and provide the resources necessary to ensure student success. Over the past two years, student success has been challenged in many unforeseen ways. Through it all, COD Foundation’s commitment to providing resources and support to students has never wavered and instead, has expanded to help see our students through this crisis. When the pandemic struck, students lost jobs and missed rent and car payments. When classes moved online, many had no internet access. To help students, the COD Foundation created the COVID-19 Student Relief fund and raised over $250,000 from individual donors and corporate and foundation grants to provide emergency assistance to students experiencing financial hardships. The Foundation also established the COVID-19 First Responder Student Relief Fund with a generous $50,000 grant from Motorola Solutions Foundation to provide assistance to first responder and front-line health care students experiencing the same hardships. Already a growing concern, food insecurity among students increased the demand on the “Fuel Pantry.” To respond to students’ needs in real-time, the COD Foundation funded food purchases, expanded the Pantry, and aided in the development of the Community Garden, which provides fresh produce, snacks, and lunch foods to students. Over the past two years, the Foundation provided hundreds of scholarships while also funding Applied Music fees, a Psychology research lab, scholarships for veterans and women seeking CDL licenses, and tuition for juveniles at the Warrenville Correction facility.

FACULTY
EXCELLENCE Organizational Culture is one of the four strategic pillars that will support COD’s future growth. The COD Foundation’s Resource for Excellence grant program has been an integral part of COD’s culture by fostering innovation, creativity and initiative among faculty and staff by providing seed money to test ideas, pilot new programs or methods, conduct research, and try new services. The COD Foundation recognizes that given resources, we have the capacity to contribute to the improvement of instruction and support for the students and communities.
DID YOU KNOW? Since 2013, the Resource for Excellence program has: • Has funded more than 67 of the 128 faculty and proposals its received. • Awarded $971,710 to faculty and staff to pilot their innovations. • Renewed 12 projects for two to three years of support. • Had at least five projects become self-sustaining, including the Visiting Artist Series, the New Student Enrollment Seminars and the College Credit Partnership with the Illinois Youth Correction Center in Warrenville.
4 COLLEGE OF DUPAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT
The COD Foundation supports high-quality instruction and services for students through its Resource for Excellence Fund (RFE). Each year, the COD Foundation provides grants to faculty and staff who propose innovative projects designed to improve access to educational opportunities, help students complete their programs, and ensure their successful transfer to a four-year institution or place of employment in their field. As funding tightens, faculty and staff seek support from RFE grants to develop creative ways to address student needs and take advantage of new learning opportunities as they arise. Yet currently, almost half of the proposed projects cannot be funded, leaving many good ideas behind. Your support ensures that innovation, creativity, and responsiveness continue to be the culture at COD. Over the past of couple years, RFE projects have included support for The Nursing and Health Sciences Symposium, Architecture Design + Build studio projects, Law Enforcement Virtual Training, GED Test Vouchers, and COD Fuel Pantry Expansion. The cross-collaborative Community Garden project also continues to grow, providing Biology, Marketing and Culinary students with opportunities for real-world learning while stocking the COD Fuel Pantry with fresh produce.

ARTS & CULTURE
INSPIRATION The McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage is a recognized leader in regional arts programming. Named as an Illinois Arts Council Agency Partners-in-Excellence, its resident programs with the New Philharmonic Orchestra, Buffalo Theatre Ensemble and Cleve Carney Museum of Art have always been an inspiring beacon for the local arts. The arts are essential in creating a vibrant life and economic development in the College of Dupage community. The MAC prioritizes access, fosters a lifelong relationship with the arts and expands appreciation of diversity.
Unfortunately, like so many places, the MAC was forced to close its doors amid the coronavirus and postpone the Frida Kahlo 2020 exhibition. This was disheartening at a time when many could benefit from the arts. But the MAC did what it does best — it got creative. To help keep the arts alive, the MAC developed a series of free and paid live-streamed programs including performances by New Philharmonic Orchestra, Frida Kahlo related events, artist lectures, and free online art projects for children. As restrictions continued, the MAC rolled out a virtual 2020–21 season and new online programs to keep the community engaged and entertained amid the shutdown. During that period, the Cleve Carney Museum of Art was expanded in preparation for hosting the Frida Kahlo: Timeless exhibit, moved to summer 2021, and the COD Foundation raised funds to support the upcoming exhibition in unique ways, including raising over $90,000 by hosting a virtual gala called “For the Love of Frida – Bringing it Home.” To remain a flagship destination for cultural and performing arts in the region, the MAC relies on donor generosity. The COD Foundation is committed to advancing the MAC’s mission to curate educational and entertaining performance opportunities as a way to encourage artistic expression and engagement, establish a lasting relationship between people and art, and enrich the cultural vitality of the community.

PARTNERS
COLLABORATION Partnerships help to connect the wide range of programs and resources at College of DuPage to the local communities. The COD Foundation cultivates partnerships with large and small corporations, area businesses and other foundations to engage the community with all that is happening at COD. Our partners provide unparalleled support for students and the community through scholarships, internships and grants to specific programs, as well as through generous monetary donations and sponsorships for cultural or performing arts events on campus.
Over the past two years,* corporate and foundation partnerships resulted in generous support for the upcoming Frida Kahlo: Timeless exhibition and the “For the Love of Frida” galas, New Philharmonic Orchestra performances, and the Lakeside Pavilion Summer Concert Series. During these unprecedented times, support and partnerships are as critical as ever. Within the past year, corporate partnerships have helped support the COVID-19 Student Relief fund and other scholarships. The College of DuPage Foundation would like to thank the following corporate and foundation partners for their generous student, program, and event support over the past couple of years.
