STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Cheryl Mayer
|
Major: Baking and Pastry Arts
Cheryl Mayer fell into the culinary field. “One day my daughter asked me to make cake pops for her – they were very trendy at the time – and I found all of the recipes tasted pretty much the same,” she said. “I started experimenting with flavors because I wanted mine to be the best. Going forward, I knew I wanted to do more.” She turned to College of DuPage, which was an affordable option at an ideal location, plus classes fit well into her schedule. Returning to school also provided a unique challenge. “I am the first person in my immediate family to attend college and it’s been a journey,” she said. “In addition to returning to school, I lost my father-in-law, my father, and our first grandchild was born. Life is all about ebb and flow and you just have to keep moving forward.” Helping Mayer to continue moving toward her goals is the College of DuPage Foundation, through which she applied for and received a multitude of scholarship: the Danny Young Memorial Scholarship, Foundation Textbook Scholarship, Foundation Returning Adult Scholarship, George Macht Scholarship and James C. Kohler Memorial Scholarship. “I feel extremely fortunate to have been awarded these scholarships because it has allowed me to focus on my studies by relieving some of the financial burden. We are now a oneincome family and my husband is also in school full-time.” Mayer plans to graduate in 2016 with her associate’s degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. After that, she plans to work for herself as a baker under the Illinois Home Kitchen Operation, which will allow her to stay at home.
Because of her positive experience at College of DuPage, she strongly recommends that other students consider COD and its exemplary Culinary Arts program. “Take a tour of the Culinary and Hospitality Center because we have an amazing facility!” she said. “As students, we bake for the market as well as dinner service, and it’s my personal belief that it gives me direct motivation. I want to create exceptional products for our clients, making them say, ‘Wow! A student created this?’ “My GPA is currently a 3.61. Although I have worked very hard, I feel indebted to the professors, chefs and the Foundation, because their dedication helped me get to where I am now.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Patricia Rohan
|
Major: Radiography
Patricia Rohan took her first class at COD in spring of 1991 after graduating high school early. Exactly 20 years later, she graduated in 2011 with an Associate’s in Applied Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Imaging – Radiography. “Somewhere in between then and now, I earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University and always took at least one summer course at COD for the convenience and savings it afforded me,” she said. “I started a promising career in corporate and higher education but was faced with a long journey of health setbacks that forced my career to the back burner.”
“I looked at several programs and schools in the metro area and decided on COD for its convenient location, affordable tuition and excellent reputation for health care programs.” For 10 years, Rohan wanted to return to school to enter the health care field. Finally, everything came together and she found it an easy choice to return to COD. “I looked at several programs and schools in the metro area and decided on COD for its convenient location, affordable tuition and excellent reputation for health care programs,” she said. “The DMIR program has been by far the most challenging of my college career but has been equally rewarding. I have been consistently impressed with the knowledge, expertise and career guidance from all of the instructors in the program. “I am also grateful for the many friends and colleagues I have met at COD and through my clinical site. One of the great things about a community college and the DMIR program is the diverse age group and population I have worked and studied with. I have no doubt many of these friendships will last a lifetime.”
6 C O L L E G E O F D U PA G E F O U N D AT I O N A N N U A L R E P O R T
In addition, Rohan has been fortunate enough to earn several Foundation scholarships, including the Returning Adult scholarship. As for her new career, Rohan sees it as a new beginning and feels like the sky’s the limit. She started working at Hinsdale Hospital as a registry tech and temporarily filled in as the clinical instructor for radiography for three months. She then worked on a special project at the hospital as it transitioned from written physician orders to computer order entry. Finally, she was officially hired full time. “I love the hospital setting, working with the public and seeing the constant technologic advances in the medical community,” she said. “Medical Imaging is a very dynamic field, so I don’t see myself getting bored with it anytime in the near future. I love my job and feel like a veteran already. The job is interesting every day, and meeting new people and working all over the hospital are two of my favorite parts of the job! “I also have a love for higher education and teaching in general, and perhaps the two will come together in the future and I can teach in conjunction with maintaining a position in the medical community. I am serving on the DMIR Advisory Committee, which is an exciting opportunity to meet with radiologists, instructors, current and former students, and other technologists in the field who are committed to making the DMIR program the best that it can be. This will also allow me to continue working with instructors and being a part of the College. Anything is possible!”

YOUR GIVING OPTIONS Whether it is a student you want to motivate, a loved one you wish to honor or an educational program you would like to see expanded, the College of DuPage Foundation is here to help. To give to College of DuPage and increase the impact public higher education has on our community, please consider the following giving options available through the College of DuPage Foundation: ESTABLISH AN ENDOWMENT Endowments are donated funds that are invested in perpetuity. Principal-generated earnings fulfill the scholarship fund’s charitable intent as established by the donor when the gift is made. If you are eager to see your gift impact lives now and in the future, establishing an endowment is a wise choice. SPONSOR, PARTICIPATE IN OR VOLUNTEER FOR OUR UPCOMING EVENTS Friday, Aug. 26 — 50th Anniversary Community Kickoff at the Lakeside Pavilion featuring: Chicago Brass Transit (Chicago tribute band) Saturday, Sept. 17 — COD Food Truck Rally and Sunset 5K Saturday, Sept. 17 — Annual Meeting Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 — Homecoming: Alumni Reunion Weekend Wednesday, Oct. 12 — Scholarship Reception Thursday, Nov. 10 — Distinguished Alumni Awards Saturday, January 7, 2017 — 50th Anniversary Scholarship Fundraiser: Chaotic Vanities Fashion Show GIFTS OF STOCKS AND BONDS Stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have increased in value and have been held for more than one year are one of the most popular assets used for charitable giving. By making a gift of appreciated assets, you can avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be due if you sold these assets and they are tax deductible for the full fair market value when the gift is made. If you own securities that have lost value, you can sell the stock, take a capital loss deduction, and make a gift to the Foundation.
MAKE A GIFT To make your gift, call (630) 942-2462, send your gift (check or money order made payable to the COD Foundation) to COD Foundation, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 or donate online at foundation.cod.edu. Please note that gifts may be made in honor or memory of someone if you choose. GIFTS OF INSURANCE Donors may give new or existing policies to the Foundation. If the Foundation is the owner of the policy, the donor may make gifts that are tax deductible to the Foundation for the purposes of paying the premiums. GIFTS OF RETIREMENT ASSETS Most people do not use off of their retirement assets during their lifetime. A gift of retirement assets, from your IRA, 401k, 403b, pension or other tax deferred plan, could make an excellent way to give back thanks to special tax considerations. Retirement plan beneficiary designations can be changed at any time by contacting your investment manager, or by logging into your retirement account and changing the beneficiary and gift percentage online. GIFTS IN KIND Gifts in kind are non-cash contributions of goods or services. COD receives a variety of in-kind gifts which include artwork, supplies, cars, uniforms, computer hardware and more. To determine if your donation qualifies, please contact us today. CAR DONATION Do you have an old or unneeded car, truck, boat or other vehicle sitting in your driveway, or taking up space in your garage? Consider donating it the Foundation. To learn how to donate your vehicle, please contact foundation@cod.edu.
All gifts made through the College of DuPage Foundation are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Pledges may be paid in installments. College of DuPage faculty and staff may also take advantage of payroll deduction.
