Fostering News We have been running some workshops for foster parents, which focus on “What to do when nothing works!” Lots of you have been asking us about this free workshop, and we are noticing these are really popular. New Qualifications - coming soon!

Editor’s Note Welcome Everybody, As we enter May, we're just a month away from our highly anticipated CoECT International Conference for 2024. At CoECT, all of our trainers are therapeutic parents and have lived experience of caring for and supporting children who have experienced trauma. We understand things won’t always go to plan and normalise the need for a plan a, b, c, and even a plan d sometimes. The International CoECT Conference “The Essential Tools of Therapeutic Parenting” is taking place on Thursday 20 June, from 10:00 - 16:00 (BST) and is a unique opportunity to gain insights from renowned experts in the field. This year's conference is based online, so secure your place and join us from the comfort of your home, or workplace.

The conference's main focus is revisiting the foundational knowledge of therapeutic parenting and providing you with essential toolkit strategies. Whether you're an experienced therapeutic parent looking for a refresher or new to the concept, this Conference is designed to equip you with practical information and tools that you can immediately apply in your work.

In this edition of our Trauma-Informed Parents (TIPs) Magazine, we offer a sneak peek of the topics that will be covered during the upcoming Conference. In our wellbeing section of this issue, Mary-Joy Johnson, a psychotherapist, founder of Wildways Therapy, and associate member of The Haven Parenting and Wellbeing Centre, has written an article discussing parental mental health and well-being and looking for those “glimmers” of hope.

This issue also explores the ground-breaking psychosensory technique, Havening. We are joined

by Dr Kate Truitt, clinical psychologist, neuroscientist, best-selling author, and developer of the Havening Techniques. Dr Kate explores how the Havening Technique can support emotional regulation in children and young people and provides some practical tools to support you and your family.

We are also joined by Dan Boxall-Simpson, a Therapeutic Foster Parent and Independent Vice Chair for two therapeutic fostering agencies. Dan shares insight into what it's like to be an independent vice chair in a therapeutically focused and trauma-informed panel.

The Tentacles of Trauma Written by Sarah Dillon

T

he subject explores how historical trauma is recreated in the present. Attendees are given insight into how a child is conditioned in early childhood to behave in the way they do.

Most complex and challenging behaviours exhibited by children from trauma are a communication of traumatic early life experiences and unmet developmental needs.

Common behaviours, such as lying, stealing, rudeness, control, aggression etc. are explored and understood as symptoms of developmental trauma disorder. Many of these behaviours arise from significant neglect.

During the session, we will look more closely at the roots of such behaviours and give a new lens through which to view them and offer effective ways of responding using therapeutic parenting.

It is vitally important to understand a child’s behaviour as their mode of communication.

Things they have not yet processed or made sense of are demonstrated through behaviour. I believe that the child’s behaviour is their loudest voice and sadly for some, their only voice!

When parents and supporting professionals view a child in this way, they begin to depersonalise even the most extreme behaviours and are able to consciously respond as opposed to emotionally react.

This enables the child’s relationship with the parent to remain intact and avoid being catapulted into toxic shame whenever there is an incident. Understanding that the child is often stuck in an egocentric state enables those caring for the child to reduce their expectations around the child’s ability to show empathy, compassion, and ISSUE 9

understanding for themselves and others. The child may deny, blame and minimise their behaviour to avoid expected rejection. This is because they may have not experienced regular relationship repair as a young child, but it’s also compounded by the way in which their brain processes threat.

Unfortunately many of our children will perceive threat where there is none. This is called faulty neuroception, a subconscious system in the brain for detecting threat. Sarah Naish calls this the ‘faulty smoke detector’. The detector constantly ringing the alarm and pushing the child into a fight, flight, freeze response when there is no apparent reason for it. Recognising and responding to the child’s behaviour is better managed when we consider their history. Access to the child’s chronology is imperative if we are to pre-empt possible behaviours or

better understand what the child is experiencing.

Many claim to be trauma-informed but knowing the theory isn’t enough. Parents have to be trauma-aware and they are at their most effective when they are able to remain connected with their child using empathy and nurture.

Sadly, children and their families are set up to fail when they are not adequately prepared for what lies ahead.

Trauma is an ugly thing and cannot be made pretty with nice words and empty promises that everything will be OK because the child is now in a safe environment.

From the child’s perspective, no environment is safe and no adult can be trusted. It takes a very long time for a child to risk investing in a T.I.P'S MAGAZINE

relationship with new adults when all others failed.

An awareness of trauma at all times enables parents to ‘listen’ to what their child is communicating and develop their ability to understand their own triggers alongside the child’s.

It’s not my fault that I act this way I haven’t ever learned to relax and play: To be the child I was born to be Was sadly taken away from me.

ver the time that we have worked together professionally, Sarah Dillon, Sarah Naish and myself have learned a great deal about some underpinning strategies that are essential as first steps to help children overcome early adverse experiences and have their needs met in a new home. We will be talking about these building blocks and strategies at our conference, but I wanted to share this top tip with you.

By maintaining a consistent, predictable and reliable environment many unmet needs are met helping a child to adjust their internal working model. I call this intervention CPR for the brain.

We have all heard of CPR, right?

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation – it’s a life saver.

Well, now I want to talk about a different sort of CPR that can help to rewire, reactivate and build brains!

CONSISTENCY PREDICTABILITY RELIABILITY Wait, what? No, it can’t be that simple, surely?

OK. First of all, it IS simple. But amazingly complex. Here’s why: We know now that our experiences build our ideas and our Internal Working Model (way of understanding the ourselves, others and the world). Our earliest experiences received through our senses activate pathways in our brain and give us survival information. For children that have suffered abuse and trauma, this can lead to a brain wired to survive.

Thus: I am – bad, worthless, unlovable, stupid, rubbish, lonely, scared, invisible. My life is in danger.

Others (adults) are – scary, dangerous, cause me pain, untrustworthy, unreliable, unpredictable.

The world is – dangerous, hostile, unwelcoming, scary. I have to remain alert all the time to stay alive.

When we introduce Consistency, Predictability and Reliability into our routines and responses and approach our children in a caring, empathic and therapeutic manner this activates different pathways.

They are not as strong as the old ideas.

Actually, our feelings start to mirror each others…

I am - confused. This doesn’t fit.

I feel wobbly and out of control. I have to take charge.

Others (adults) are – confusing. They seem to care.

That can’t be right, its probably a trick. It will all change. I must keep my guard up.

The world is – not how it used to be. I don’t understand. I think my head will explode while I try to make sense of it.

Parents find they have much the same feelings. Try not to worry, it’s a sign of connection to your child.

Over time, as we keep to our routines, our boundaries, and provide a nurturing therapeutic environment the new pathways T.I.P'S MAGAZINE

become stronger, more resilient.

The old pathways remain, but they are activated less frequently and usually under extreme stress or as a result of an early memory/feeling triggering a response. It is hard, but children can resolve their conflicts with support and this will enable them to have a different kind of life and relationships to the one they were stuck in, through no fault of their own. Then: I am – OK. Pretty good actually. I am learning that I am loveable, I have skills, I am caring.

Sometimes I still feel bad.

Adults are – Usually loving and helpful, especially my parents. Its ok to be careful with strangers.

My parents can help me sort things out.

The world is – not so scary. I know I can have help to work things out. Parts of it are even quite fun!

Parents feel much the same, but as parents and child/ren continue the process they can find joy in each other.

Looking for the 'Glimmers' of Hope: Focusing on the Parent's/Carer's Mental Health and Wellbeing Written By Mary-Joy Johnson

A

commitment to, and curiosity about our own mental health is one of the most resourcing and positive things we can do to support our life as a parent.

I don’t just mean a preoccupation with what makes us sad, angry, depressed or scared, I also mean what makes us ‘tick’, where our happiness reserve is, what/who/where brings us our deepest peace and joy (or even just a little sprinkle of it?).

Sometimes these things are interrupted and lost in the day to day stuff of parenting. If parenting is hard and you are experiencing a lot of stress and trauma then finding peace and joy can feel impossible, or too much effort, especially when our children's’ needs take priority. But not doing so is also a risk, for we are our children's’ greatest resource and advocate.

I trained as an integrative psychotherapist, trauma-therapist and adoption support counsellor because I am passionate about providing safe, inclusive, non-pathologising and nonparent-blaming mental health services to parents and carers. I recognise and have lived experience of the unique and compounding issues of developmental trauma in family systems.

I am inspired and revived by the natural world and identify the deep connection and origin story we all hold with nature, both implicitly and explicitly. There is a diverse evidence base for the supportive impact on our mental health of immersing in nature and I look to harness this across my services. One of the ways I do this is by acknowledging the exquisite mammalian features of our own nervous systems. Yes, those nervous systems that mean we are often run ISSUE 9

ragged by the needs of our children (as their behaviours communicate distress and dysregulation) are also our greatest resource! In my work I help clients look for ways to seek soothing and regulation for themselves by looking for their own cues of safety, feeling into sustainable daily routines and expanding our awareness of our own sensory worlds.

Even in online sessions we work with sensory themes and the natural world. In-person, sessions are held in outdoor spaces, walking and interacting with the environment including partnering with horses, bringing opportunities for therapeutic relationships to emerge and with it, corrective emotional experiences of what it is to be with another. This can be so important when we have experienced traumatic relationships within our families.

So often the focus of our care is on our children - tracking their triggers, planning low demand interactions, soothing transitions and pre-empting meltdowns.

Well, what if we did that for ourselves?

We are encouraged, trained and taught to be the steadfast coregulators of our children, but for some of us the exposure to trauma fuelled behaviours, or our own traumatic pasts, mean we are at risk of being in our own trauma response and dysregulation. We need to help ourselves first. This takes time, effort and focus, but knowing ourselves, tracking ‘our’ triggers, having low demand time and pre-empting our own distress’ means we can become that ‘unassailable safe base’ (Sarah Naish) because we are that for ourselves first.

I work with the concept of ‘Glimmers’. Coined by Deb Dana (licensed clinical social worker and author), she invites us to be curious about the little sparks of possibility, the quiet, gently ameliorative things that act as a T.I.P'S MAGAZINE

Humans are designed to move towards homeostasis, we have the mechanisms for feeling safe, regulated, peaceful and joyful within our own physiology, it’s in ‘our’ nature.

Our own childhood trauma, bereavement, chronic advocacy for services for our child(ren), changes in personal circumstances like losing a job/career, issues around intersectionality and marginalisation, traumatic events and chronic, prolonged stress can have happened to any of us. Sleep deprivation, relational challenges, child-on-parent abuse, false allegation, ill health, life changes (such as menopause), 24/7 caring for vulnerable, traumatised children…. the list of potential stressors is long! There is no failure in being human and reaching overwhelm.

Things to help: Write yourself a note/letter - a list of simple and accessible things you love to do (glimmers and sensory friends), see if you can do one (some) of these things. Even just sitting and remembering them can provoke a sense of wellness, a ‘glimmer’. Keep the note somewhere you can find it on days when it is hard to remember or share it with a trusted person who can remind you when times are rough.

Find a safe, truthful space to explore what is going on for you.

momentary intervention that give us a ‘glimmer’ of hope, peace and perhaps a hint of joy. These glimmers matter because they create an internal physiological shift in our nervous systems and promote an orientation back towards regulation. Glimmers, like triggers, are unique to us all. Often imperceptible until they are happening and easily forgotten, the clues are there if we look for them. A glimmer could be as simple as the breath we take after we sip a warm drink, hearing bird song, feeling our duvet wrapped around ourselves. Glimmers are like ‘sensory friends’ that let us know we are safe and so we can breathe and return to a more regulated state. The more we notice our own sensory needs the more we can pay attention to repeating them and ensuring we are accessing them as much as possible.

Some of the mental exhaustion and collapse comes from feeling we have to mask and ‘present’ our situation as somehow different or better in social circles, with family and professionals. Being able to be congruent and in our integrity whilst speaking about what is happening for us and our families, in a non-judgemental space, is an important restorative practice.

Hopefully we can do this with our partner, family or friends. But not all of us have this. Parenting traumatised children can be very isolating. This is why I recommend that all the parents/carers I work with join NATP and become part of this authentic, grounded and experienced network.

If you don’t feel able to talk to someone in your close circle of friends and family or these relationships are also strained by the same experiences, do seek alternative peer or professional help such as the NATP Helpline, The Haven Parenting & Wellbeing Centre or a qualified and

experienced therapist (with knowledge of developmental trauma and who specialises in working with parents).

Don’t stop until you find the support that works for you because good mental health and wellbeing is your right too.

Introducing the Healing in Your Hands Tools to Children The Healing In Your Hands Tools are a suite of powerful, sensory-based tools that can help adults and children self-soothe, manage stress, and enhance their emotional resilience. This method involves a gentle, therapeutic touch, called the self-havening touch, that stimulates the production of calming brain chemicals, providing comfort and safety. Teaching children how to apply the self-havening touch can empower them to feel more in control of their emotions and reactions, fostering a sense of security and well-being. Integrating imaginative play into the learning and practice of self-havening touch not only makes the experience more engaging for children but also anchors the technique in their memory. Encourage your child to conjure up calming scenes during the practice, such as the gentle lull of a quiet beach or the soft warmth of a sunlit meadow, to deepen the soothing effect. You could also weave in elements of storytelling, where each havening touch helps smooth out ocean waves or brush

snowflakes from their shoulders and arms, creating an interactive narrative that captivates their imagination.

Continue to offer positive reinforcement as they practice these tools, celebrating their willingness to try something new and acknowledging their efforts in managing their emotions. This kind of support nurtures their confidence in using self-havening touch as an effective tool for self-soothing.

Trauma-Informed Principles with the Self-Havening Touch When utilising mindful touch for emotional regulation, it is crucial to consider the individual child’s experiences and comfort levels, particularly for those who have experienced trauma: Remember to be mindful to support your child in building trust with the self-havening touch.

Initiating any physical touch requires building a foundation of trust. Children must feel secure and in control of their space before they are comfortable with close physical interaction.

Step-by-Step Guide For Teaching the Self-Havening Touch 1. Create a Calm Environment: Begin by ensuring you and your child are in a comfortable and quiet space.

2. Explain the Purpose: Use simple language to explain what selfhavening is and how it can help. For example, you might say, "This is a way to give ourselves a gentle hug to help us feel calmer whenever we feel upset or scared."

3. Demonstrate the Technique: Model the self-havening touch yourself first. Cross your arms over your chest, placing each hand on the opposite shoulder. Gently move your hands in a downward motion to your elbows. Repeat this motion slowly and explain that this touch helps release a very calming feeling throughout the brain and body. I like to describe this as giving oneself a “moving hug.”

Alternatively, they can perform palm havening, which involves rubbing palms together slowly, as if washing hands.

4. Encourage Slow, Rhythmic Touch: Invite the child to apply the gentle touch slowly and rhythmically to their own arms. You can count out loud or use a calm tone to help them find a soothing rhythm.

Allowing children to choose how and when to engage in these healing practices in moments of emotional distress will significantly enhance their sense of autonomy and control, which is often compromised in traumatic experiences.

Teaching the self-havening touch to children is not only a way to help them manage immediate stress but also a lifelong skill that promotes emotional self-regulation and resilience. In the next section, we will explore why these tools are supportive for emotional regulation and how to make these practices a normal part of your daily routine.

Understanding Emotional Zones and Using Self-Havening Techniques Being a resilient caregiver requires continual learning and adaptation, understanding how stress affects children, and providing them with tools to manage it can significantly improve emotional resilience. Let’s explore how to integrate the concept ISSUE 9

stress zones with practical neuroscience-based techniques to support emotional regulation. Just as adults do, children experience fluctuations in their emotional states, which are observable through three primary "zones" of arousal: the Red Zone, the Blue Zone, and the Green Zone. Recognizing these zones allows parents to understand and respond more effectively to their children's emotional and behavioral signals.

Red Zone (Hyperarousal): In the Red Zone, children's nervous systems are overstimulated, comparable to a car with its gas pedal stuck down. Behaviors in this zone may include anger, panic, aggression, defensiveness, impulsivity, poor focus, hyperactivity, and irritability.

Blue Zone (Hypoarousal): The Blue Zone, on the other hand, is like a car with the brake pedal stuck down, where the nervous system is under-stimulated. This zone's hallmarks are passivity and withdrawal behaviors, such as zoning out, sadness, emotional numbing, reluctance to engage, and fatigue.

Green Zone: The Green Zone denotes a balanced nervous system. Here, children display calmness, alertness, and a readiness to engage. This zone is characterized by emotional stability, focused attention, and social engagement, allowing children to fully participate in learning and play, exhibit resilience to challenges, and express curiosity and enthusiasm for new experiences.

By understanding these zones, caregivers can assist their children in navigating their emotions and finding their way back to the Green Zone, where they are best equipped to thrive emotionally, socially, and cognitively.

Practical Tools for Emotional Regulation Tool 1: Breathing Techniques Breathing, though an automatic function, can significantly influence emotional control when regulated.

Teaching children simple breathing exercises can provide them with a sense of empowerment and an always-accessible self-regulation tool.

Practice: Hand Breathing 1. The child holds their hand in front of them.

2. Starting at the base of the thumb, they use the pointer finger of the other hand to trace up to the thumb's tip while inhaling slowly.

3. They pause and hold their breath as they trace over the top of the thumb.

4. They exhale slowly as they trace back down the other side of the thumb towards the pointer finger.

5. Repeating this process for each finger, the child completes five slow, deep breaths.

This exercise helps children focus, reduces impulsivity, and brings them back into the Green Zone.

Tool 2: CPR For the Amygdala® For children who might need more engagement to focus during stressful moments, CPR for the Amygdala combines the soothing power of touch with cognitive distractions. The acronym CPR stands for Creating Personal Resilience. In a moment of distress, our emotional brain,

particularly our amygdala, can become overactive, leading to frustration, agitation (the Red Zone), or even lead to the experience of dissociation or depression (the Blue Zone). This powerful tool supports children and ourselves in returning to the Green Zone at a neurobiological level. For younger children we call this tool Gaba Games as one of the brain chemicals released when we apply the self-havening touch is the neurotransmitter GABA. Practice: CPR for the Amygdala/GABA Games 1. Teach the child to perform the self-havening touch as discussed in the above section 2. Pair these movements with simple brain games such as: a. Singing a song together. b. Identifying items in their environment (e.g., finding objects that are square, round, soft, or smooth). c. Counting items of different colors in the room. d. Play an alphabetical game, for example, all participants in the brain game take turns naming animals from A to Z. These activities engage both the body and mind, helping to reduce stress and encouraging a return to the Green Zone.

one activity to another, such as before leaving for school or after coming home, to help reset and refresh their emotional state.

A great transition game is the Havening Welcome Home Party co-created by Laura Haver and myself and detailed in Laura’s book Play Together: Games & Activities for the Whole Family to Boost Creativity, Connection & Mindfulness (2022). This activity encourages emotional awareness by inviting the children to identify a song that matches a feeling state they would like to have more of as they transition into the next activity or as they return home from school. The experience is then enhanced by dancing to the song while incorporating the selfhavening touch to encourage connection, play, and emotional regulation.

Bedtime Calm: Include selfhavening as part of the bedtime routine to help children unwind and prepare for sleep, reinforcing a sense of safety and relaxation at night.

Encourage children to be creative and come up with their own games that include mindful touch so they may make the practice truly theirs. This not only enhances their engagement but also promotes a deeper connection to

the method, empowering them to take charge of their emotional well-being. By expanding selfhavening techniques through playful and imaginative exercises, children can develop a robust toolkit that supports their emotional resilience both now and in the future.

Building Resilience Together In resilient caregiving, the utilization of the Healing in Your Hands with self-havening tools and interactive activities is more than a series of isolated exercises; it's a practical approach to nurturing emotional health in both children and caregivers. Engaging in these co-regulatory strategies not only addresses immediate emotional needs but also cultivates enduring resilience and emotional intelligence, thereby enhancing the dynamics within the family. By practising selfhavening and engaging in joint activities, we do not also reinforce our own emotional well-being. In fostering a nurturing and understanding environment, we ensure that resilience grows in our family, benefiting everyone involved.

This journey is not just about raising resilient children; it's about creating a resilient family.

Incorporating Emotional Regulation into Daily Routines By introducing these techniques into daily routines, you can help children build habits that foster emotional resilience. Whether these tools are used proactively each day or in response to visible signs of stress, they equip children with essential skills to manage their emotional states effectively.

Therapeutic Fostering Panel: Meet Dan Boxall-Simpson Vice Chair for two Therapeutic Fostering Agencies I’m Dan Boxall-Simpson and am an Independent Panel Vice Chair for TRUE Fostering and Safer Fostering, as well as sitting on a Local Authority Panel and another Independent Fostering Agency (IFA) Panel as an Independent Member.

My husband, Lee, and I are Foster Parents for a South West Local Authority. We have been fostering for six years and currently have 3-year-old & 8-year-old siblings and also 15-year-old & 17-year-old siblings with us at home. We have a bit of a madhouse with two dogs, a cat, some tortoises, chickens, peacock, guinea pigs, guinea fowl, and some turkeys! We both work full-time, alongside fostering, and I am also involved in several voluntary roles. I’m a selfconfessed chocoholic.

How long have you been a Panel Member and what prompted you to apply?

I joined TRUE and Safer about two years ago. I was researching Sarah Naish and Therapeutic Parenting. A google search brought up TRUE fostering and I was looking around the website and came across an advert for new Independent Panel Members. I had always liked the idea of being a panel member but hadn’t really thought I’d ever be successful in joining a panel. I applied anyway and was offered the position after an interview and the usual safer recruitment checks. I was motivated to join as I really wanted to make a difference. When my husband and I attended a panel with our Local Authority following our Form F-based assessment, my husband and our Assessing Social Worker felt that one particular member of the panel “gave me a grilling” with his style, tone and content of questioning.

It resulted in us writing to the Chair to make a formal complaint. It was something I felt really uncomfortable about as we’d just been approved to foster, and here we were complaining already! The Chair ended up visiting us and apologising, he confirmed that our feedback had been taken on board and that the panel would be more sensitive in their approach, alongside an apology.

What is different about a Therapeutic Panel?

It starts with the Therapeutic Fostering Assessment (TFA).

The style of the assessment is much more therapeutic for the applicants. Local Authorities will often talk about Therapeutic Parenting Styles, which are all about the children and how we can use PACE around the children (which, of course, is important!). They do, however, completely forget and disregard the Foster Parents,

and indeed the other professionals such as Childrens Social Workers, Supervising Social Workers and other professionals.

The TFA is a kinder, more natural approach at gathering all the essential information needed for Panel to make their recommendation to the ADM (Agency Decision Maker). The TFA is less repetitive and flows naturally, much like a real-life storybook. This is beneficial to the applicants, the assessing Social Worker, and all the people involved in pulling the information together. It feels like a kinder approach, as, after all, all fostering assessments go into great detail about every aspect of a family's personal life in an intimate and often intrusive way.

A Therapeutic Panel is that the style of the panel feels kinder and almost more humane. The language we use is therapeutic in nature, such as not using words such as ‘Placements’, ‘Cases’, ‘Carers’. Instead, using words such as Homes, Children, Foster Parents, these being only a few examples. The format of the Panel Agenda means that there is more natural freedom for Panel Members to probe further in a more conversational way. Some LA and other IFA Panels can feel rather old fashioned and ‘formal’. We have to remember that Panel is a formal process and the purpose of panel is to scrutinise the information presented, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be kind in the approach. Our Panel Members all embrace Therapeutic approaches and are constantly learning with the support of people who live and breathe it, day in and day out. We’re all realistic too, after all, we’re all (mostly) human!

Everyone at Panel has fun too. It’s serious business, so being playful with each other helps set us up for a positive days work. I attended my interview for Vice Chair in a rather colourful bow-tie (as well as being fully clothed obviously!). We had a vote on whether my bowtie would also do the trick for when we were T.I.P'S MAGAZINE

observed by Ofsted - it worked, as TRUE were rated Outstanding in Ofsted’s report! Obviously, my bow-tie can’t take all the credit, though I like to think it helped!

At our last panel, some of our members were having technical difficulties (Our Panels are all held Virtual on Microsoft Teams). Teams had updated its software, and while we were waiting, I sang the whole lyrics to Gloria Gaynor’s “I will Survive” for Panel. I’m a really bad singer, but it lightened the mood.

What do you enjoy most about panel?

The people! From the wide range of skills and backgrounds of Independent Panel Members, we have as part of the team to the absolutely amazing Foster Parents, I feel very privileged to meet. I have learnt so much from other Foster Parents who are presented to us at the Panel, which has ultimately improved me as a Foster Parent. I can’t stress enough how grateful I am after every single Panel session to have been able to be part of their fostering journey.

Is there anything you don’t like about Panel?

We sometimes have to make difficult recommendations, which can be tough. However, I’m more than happy to have a good debate in the Panel and be confident in my individual vote. We are all very respectful of each other's opinions based on our own areas of experience.

What advice would you give to applicants attending panel?

Be yourself! It’s okay to be nervous, but that shows you care. The panel isn’t there to ask questions to try and

catch you out, but they need to be sure that they can confidently recommend that you are able to safely look after children who have been through a really tough time, often things a lot of us will never have experienced before. Also, remember that if the Panel puts in additional recommendations, such as returns to the panel early, it’s to support you and ensure that the agency is supporting you adequately.

Anything else you would like to add?

I often say that being part of TRUE & Safer Fostering panels, along with my growing experience with the other LA and IFA, has been life-changing for me. I enjoy it immensely. I didn’t apply for the Vice Chair position when it came up within the first few months of my joining the panel as I lacked confidence. I really didn’t feel that I was experienced enough as a Panel Member, never mind applying that to Chairing the Panel. After a year to eighteen months of experience I did apply to become the Vice Chair and was successful. This has been another confidence boost, and I do feel much more knowledgeable and skilled with a good amount of experience under my belt. I’m keen to learn more and be part of a Therapeutic revolution!

I’m always banging the drum with the LA we foster for and also at my other panels about all things ‘therapeutic’, not just for the children, but for Foster Parents too.
