FY 2023-2024

A Year in Review

As I look back on this past year, I am filled with gratitude for the impact we have made together on our patients, their families, and our community. Through challenges and triumphs, your unwavering support has fueled our mission of compassionate care and dignity for those facing life-limiting conditions.

This fiscal year, we cared for 1,355 patients, each with their own unique story and journey. Our dedicated team of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, certified nursing assistants, grief counselors, volunteers, and supporting staff worked tirelessly to ensure every person we served received the highest level of care, whether through pain management, emotional support, or simply providing moments of peace and comfort. Nevertheless, we were not alone. Behind every service provided is a deeply committed group of individuals— Board of Directors, donors, and community partners—whose generosity and dedication made our work possible.

This commitment has made Coastal Hospice one of the best hospices in the region, and according to National Hospice Analytics, this fiscal year we ranked #1 in quality in the State of Maryland. To us, this means that the dedication and compassion of our team has truly made a difference in the lives of

patients and families we serve, while inspiring us to uphold our standards and expand our impact, ensuring that everyone in need of end-of-life care receives the best support possible.

As a team member and now as interim President and CEO, I have always valued what makes our organization truly special—our strong reputation and the exceptional care we have delivered to our communities for more than 44 years, thanks to a strong team and to donors like you.

Thank you for your support during 2023-2024. We hope you see in this annual report the impact that you make possible through your generosity and the difference you have made in the lives of many thanks to your steadfast commitment to our mission. Together, we have accomplished so much, and we cannot wait to see what we will achieve in the future.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Our Care

Hospice at Home

Our interdisciplinary teams provided specialized care for 1,049 patients and their families in the comfort of their place of residence, nursing home, or assisted living facility.

Residence Hospice at Macky and Pam Stansell House

Our expert team provide a safe, comfortable, and compassionate place for hospice patients who cannot safely manage their care at home. This year we expanded our licensure to provide General Inpatient Care (GIP), allowing us to offer short-term acute care intervention to patients needing this level of care, and introduced ADS (Automatic Dispensing System) for medications, providing faster medication retrieval for patients in need of acute symptom management.

We cared for 106 patients and their families at our hospice residence, the Macky and Pam Stansell House.

Inpatient Hospice at Coastal Hospice at the Lake

Coastal Hospice at the Lake, our short-term inpatient facility located in a dedicated wing of the historic Deer’s Head Hospital, is designed to give patients and their loved ones a temporary stay when intense medical care is needed to treat symptoms that cannot be managed at home.

This year, Coastal Hospice at the Lake provided care and support for 190 patients and their families.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care is our community based medical program focused on supporting patients living with serious illnesses while they continue to receive curative treatments, testing, medications, and other therapies. Our medical team collaborates with primary care providers and specialists to address symptom management and provide other supportive services.

Our Palliative Care program offered 2,450 consults to those living with a serious illness, providing patients with understanding, care, and education.

Thanks to your generosity, in FY 2023-2024 we were able to provide $311,585 in charity care.

Our Care

Pediatric Care

Our pediatric hospice team provides one of the most intensive and comprehensive levels of care available. We are proud to offer this care alongside curative treatments, ensuring families benefit from coordinated support across multiple organizations.

Pediatric hospice care involves extensive collaboration with hospitals, specialists, interdisciplinary teams, pharmacies, durable medical equipment providers, early intervention programs (such as Infant and Toddler programs), school boards, churches, and more. Our partners work closely with our team to provide tailored pediatric services to meet each child's unique needs.

This year we provided support and care to two Lower Eastern Shore pediatric patients and their families.

We Honor Veterans

We are committed to providing veterans with the medical care and attention they deserve. Our interdisciplinary team addresses the specific and often invisible needs they face during their end-of-life journey, focusing on the psychosocial, physical, and spiritual needs of them and their families.

This year we honored and cared for 235 veterans.

Grief Support for Adults

Our licensed counselors and trained staff support individuals of all ages navigating grief and loss. This year, we offered a safe and nurturing space where they can process their emotions and develop healthy coping strategies. Our services include one-on-one counseling, support groups, and memorial services among others, offered at no cost, and available to everyone in the community.

2,580 families were cared for by our bereavement team.

5,894 bereaved families received check-in phone calls and supportive mailings.

109 adults engaged in support groups.

121 attended our Memorial Services throughout the four counties.

Grief Support for Children

Camp Chameleon is a 4-day summer day camp open to children ages 6 to 12, who have experienced a primary loss in their life, like the death of a parent, grandparent, sibling or a closely connected person. The camp offers a safe place for children to express their grief, explore the many emotions that accompany the death of someone close, and learn age-appropriate coping skills that will assist them on their grief journey. This year we supported

42 bereaved children and their families.

Volunteers

Volunteers are essential to Coastal Hospice, providing emotional support and companionship to patients and their families while helping to create a holistic care experience. They contribute their unique skills, such as art, music, or artisanship, strengthen community ties, and serve as ambassadors for hospice awareness. Additionally, they assist with administrative tasks and fundraising, helping us reduce operational costs and maximizing resources. Above all, our volunteers embody the compassionate spirit of hospice care, offering comfort, dignity, and meaningful connections to our patients and their families. This year, our volunteers provided:

3,767 hours donated

882 patient’s homes visits

5,792 miles driven

115 pet companionship visits

148 lavender hand massages

Thrift Shop

Positive Impact

Since 2011, Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop has been giving new life to gently used items, reducing waste and the environmental impact of discarded goods in our community.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, the proceeds from reselling these donated household items help us provide charity care at Macky and Pam Stansell House, our residence hospice facility.

This year, Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop recycled:

10 tons of textiles and clothing

5 tons of books and CDs

21 tons of houseware items

Community Involvement

Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop works with local organizations and educational institutions to support local initiatives, promoting volunteerism, providing job training, and extracurricular opportunities for students and community members. Programs like these not only help us provide better service, but also strengthens the social support networks within our communities.

Education

Staff Training

Staff training is essential for Coastal Hospice because it empowers our teams to provide the compassionate, high-quality care that patients and their families need during such a crucial time. Hospice care goes beyond managing physical symptoms like pain; it also requires emotional and psychological support delivered with sensitivity and respect. Training helps our staff develop the clinical skills and communication techniques necessary to meet each individual’s unique needs, while also staying updated on advancements in palliative care and end-of-life care. It fosters teamwork, promotes self-care, and enables our caregivers to create a space of dignity, comfort, and peace for those we serve.

2,432

individual Education Modules were completed by our staff.

220

average hours of Onboarding Training.

206 staff attendees to Annual Skill Fair.

Caregiver Academy

Caring for a loved one or supporting patients at the end of life is a selfless and rewarding act, yet it can also be demanding, isolating, and emotionally challenging. To support caregivers at home and professionals in healthcare, Coastal Hospice offers timely education through the Coastal Hospice Caregiver Academy. We offer free online and in-person programs that provide valuable clinical education on end-of-life topics, as well as practical and spiritual guidance for patients and families. Drawing on over four decades of expertise, the Caregiver Academy has addressed grief, hospice eligibility, and pain management, among other relevant topics with an extraordinary response from the community. With the help of volunteers and trained staff members, we also provide information and education on hospice care and the services we provide to partners and community at large.

In FY 2023-2024, the Caregiver Academy brought education in end-of-life topics to more than 2,400 professional healthcare providers and members of our community.

Excellence in Quality of Life Awards

In the frame of our 44th Anniversary Celebration, we hosted the Excellence in Quality of Life Awards where more than 240 guests and 30 community sponsors gathered to honor partners and organizations that share the same goal: offering the best possible care for our patients and their families. It was a beautiful morning of joy, recognition, gratitude, and celebration of excellence in care. We are grateful for the generosity, support, and commitment of our community who participated by voting in five categories and by showing up to recognize those partners and collaborators whose daily work uphold the quality of care that we provide.

Signature Events

Our signature events, Taste of Finer Things and Blues on the Bay, along with our annual Angel Appeal are at the heart of our fundraising efforts, providing the vital support we need to continue our mission of promoting dignity and enhancing the quality of life for patients and families facing life-limiting conditions. We are profoundly thankful for the generosity of our donors, the dedication of those who attend, and the incredible work of our volunteer committees who help bring these events to life. Your unwavering support and hard work truly make a difference. Beyond raising essential funds, these events allow us to share our mission, connect with new members of our community, and inspire others to join us in creating a lasting impact.

Thanks to your support, our signature events and annual appeal raised over $490,000

In FY 2023-2024, our staff drove 643,319.22 miles across the four counties we serve, bringing expert care, support, and education to our communities. This is equivalent to driving 25 times around the Earth!

To all the wonderful staff of Coastal Hospice,

As the first anniversary of my Mother’s passing approaches, I have to thank everyone who participated in my Mother’s Care, with special mention to her nurse, chaplain, and the many certified nursing assistants who came to the house.

Being able to keep Mom at home, thanks to all your support, was invaluable. The social workers assigned to us made it easy as it could be in those last weeks and days we had with Mom. I also want to recognize the nurses who came to us in Mom’s last few hours. We couldn’t have asked for better care for my Mother and myself, than what our Coastal Hospice team provided.

With many thanks and love,

— A patient’s daughter
