From the President’s Desk
As we reflect on the past 45 years, we celebrate the dedication and passion of everyone who has been part of this journey—our employees, partners, supporters, and the communities we serve. Your contributions have shaped our success and strengthened our impact.
This anniversary is not just about looking back but also about looking ahead. With collaboration and a shared vision for the future, we remain committed to making a difference for years to come. Thank you for being part of our story. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you throughout the year and continuing this incredible journey together.
The past few months have been exciting for us! We hosted the Ribbon Cutting for our new Coastal Palliative Care Clinic, allowing us to showcase and celebrate our beautiful new location. In addition, we've been expanding our outreach efforts, raising funds to support charity care across all four Lower Eastern Shore counties.
We are looking forward to our larger fundraising events, Taste of Finer Things, 45th Anniversary Gala, Blues on the Bay, and Coastal Walk & 5K Run.
As my time as Interim President and CEO comes to a close, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude. It has been an incredible privilege to serve in this role. I am deeply appreciative of the support given to me over the past 10 months.
I am excited to welcome Dan Ayres as he steps into this role. Dan brings a wealth of experience and a vision that will undoubtedly propel us to new heights. I encourage everyone to extend their support as he embarks on this journey with us. I am confident that he will be instrumental in advancing our mission to promote dignity and enhance the quality of life for patients and families facing life-limiting conditions.
While I transition to Chief Operations Officer, I look forward to continuing to contribute to our collective success and to seeing all that we will accomplish under Dan's leadership.

Volunteer Viewpoint
Making a Meaningful Difference
By Jeffrey Gadow
I am honored to introduce myself as the new Volunteer Services Manager here at Coastal Hospice.
As a proud Eastern Shore native, I bring a diverse background to this role, with a foundation in funeral services and extensive experience in volunteer coordination within healthcare settings. My personal connection to hospice care, having witnessed its invaluable support within my own family, deepens my appreciation for the compassionate care that Coastal Hospice provides. This personal connection and experience fuels my excitement to join such a dedicated team, and I am truly grateful to be part of a mission that supports patients and their families during their most challenging times.
In my new role, I am fortunate to be joined by a talented and passionate team of Volunteer Coordinators. Together, we are committed not only to maintaining but also to expanding the volunteer program here at Coastal Hospice. We are excited about the opportunities ahead to grow our network of volunteers, strengthen our ability to support our mission, and positively impact the community. Currently, we are actively recruiting volunteers for a variety of essential roles, including patient care in both home settings and our inpatient facilities—the Macky & Pam Stansell House and Coastal Hospice at the Lake. Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to assist with administrative tasks, bereavement services, fundraising champions, pet therapy program, We Honor Veterans program, and roles within our Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop as associates and merchandisers. We are also introducing new volunteer opportunities soon, offering even more ways for our community to get involved.
While our focus includes the recruitment of new volunteers, we place equal emphasis on honoring our existing volunteers. During National Volunteer Week, we look forward to celebrating the dedication and profound impact volunteers have had on the lives of our patients and their families. We also recognize their hard work, compassion, and commitment every day of the year.
For those interested in joining our team, we invite you to attend one of our upcoming volunteer orientation
sessions listed below. These sessions are designed to provide the necessary information and training to help you get started in any of the available roles. Whether you're interested in patient care, administrative support, or another area, we welcome the opportunity to have you join our volunteer family and make a meaningful difference in our community.
In conclusion, volunteering is the cornerstone of our organization, and we are profoundly grateful for the compassion and dedication our volunteers bring to supporting our patients and their families. As the new Volunteer Services Manager, I am excited to collaborate with this exceptional team to further enhance our volunteer program and ensure that we remain a vital resource for those in need of care and comfort.

Volunteer Culture: Finding Your Fit
Volunteering offers numerous benefits, including personal satisfaction, skill development, networking opportunities, and enhanced mental and physical well-being. It allows individuals to make a positive and meaningful impact in their communities, strengthen social connections, and foster a sense of belonging. Ultimately, it's a rewarding experience that enriches both the volunteers and the community that it serves.
One of our dedicated volunteers, Joe Wasser, Senior Account Manager at State and Federal Communications, was recently featured on a podcast, Lobby Comply Pod. This is a monthly podcast hosted by Joe May, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at the company. State and Federal Communications is headquartered in Akron, Ohio, maintains an office in Washington, D.C. and covers lobbying compliance, ethics, campaign finance, and election news from across the country. Their company culture fosters a network of significant influence, actively showcasing the meaningful impact of volunteering through its core values and mission.
“I'm very excited about the charitable service hours I’ve been doing while working for State and Federal Communications since I've been on board. It’s part of the culture around here to volunteer and help others. I discovered a part of myself by doing volunteer work that I didn't know I had in me. I am in my 60s and I've never volunteered for anything except as the bingo caller at my children's elementary school, which my wife technically volunteered for me to do.
I work remotely from my home in Maryland and periodically at the D.C. office. Human Resources advised me to Google my county's name for volunteer opportunities. I live in Worcester County, Maryland, which is Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore. I searched ‘volunteer opportunities’ and came up with 400 results, 397 of which were fundraising.
I raise money for a living, asking people to invest in our fine services and products, so I wasn't looking to do the same for volunteer work. However, one entry stood out: 'Hospice volunteer, simply companionship.' My mom sadly passed away in hospice care, and that was my only personal exposure. I decided to reach out to the Coastal Hospice Volunteer Services office, which serves Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties. They informed me that at any given time, they'll have approximately 260 patients and the volunteer network is pretty large. I explained that it's in my nature to try to amuse people and to be funny, so I asked, ‘Is there a fit for somebody with my personality?’ She said, believe it or not, there is, and it’s important to learn when to be funny and when to listen.
Online training is required and counts toward your charitable service hours. The online and in-person training was fascinating and discussed different scenarios that patients go through in hospice and experiences that volunteers go through. Since I've been volunteering at Coastal Hospice, I discovered a part of me that I didn't know existed. After completing online training and before visiting patients and families on my own, I shadowed experienced volunteers, which helped me feel more comfortable when providing companionship. But when I did it alone for the first time—well, what do they say? Step out of your comfort zone. I had no one to back me up or step in if I needed help that first time. I quickly realized the importance of understanding the audience. Since I was a stranger to these individuals, I had to approach each interaction with sensitivity. I’d introduce myself, 'I’m Joe, a hospice volunteer. I’m here to say hello and see if you’d like to talk.' Some would invite me to pull a chair up, while others weren’t interested. You have to gauge your audience.
It was an active summer of volunteering, and in June 2024, I was assigned my first patient. Each visit varied—some lasted just 45 minutes when he had little energy, while others stretched to three hours. Throughout five or six meetings, we built a meaningful bond, sharing both good moments and difficult ones.
Throughout our time together, I kept in touch with his wife, updating her after each visit since she was often at work. She appreciated the updates, and our conversations became a collaborative effort between her, me, and Coastal Hospice Volunteer Services. Sadly, he passed away in late July. It was a privilege to be part of his journey, offering companionship and support.
Joe Wasser
Though it was initially uncomfortable, it didn’t take long to find my groove and figure out what needed to be done when visiting patients. The experience has been incredibly rewarding—I’ve heard some truly amazing life stories. I never expected to gain such deep insight into the rich histories of the people I’ve met.
I don’t think I would have volunteered in this capacity without the culture of State and Federal Communications. When I was hired a couple of years ago, human resources emphasized, "We do a lot for others." That mindset stuck with me. The culture of volunteering within this program helped me discover this part of myself, and without their support and structure, I might never have taken this path.
If you're interested in volunteering, my advice is—why not give it a try? The worst that can happen is you realize it's not the right fit, and that's okay. I chose Coastal Hospice because it felt like a natural fit—I talk for a living, so listening and conversing come easily to me. But if that's not your strength, Coastal Hospice offers many other ways to get involved. There's something for everyone.”
Since I've been volunteering at Coastal Hospice, I discovered a part of me that I didn't know existed.

Growth through Grief
While grief is the natural response to the loss of someone important to you, each person’s grief is unique. It's a process that takes time. Our qualified bereavement counselors can help you navigate the grieving process.
Grief is a deeply personal journey, and having access to qualified counselors can make a meaningful difference in how individuals cope with loss. Rachel Gulley and Nicole Long emphasize the importance of bereavement support.
Loss of Loved One Grief Support Groups offer connection that comes from being with people of all faiths who have also recently experienced a loss. Using grief-related videos, articles, and self-assessment worksheets, our groups provide emotional support, validation, and education about grief. We also promote a safe environment where one can freely tell their story and express feelings, knowing others will be understanding, non-judgmental, and supportive. Group members learn new coping skills, relaxation techniques, stress management skills, and daily survival skills that are effective. In an atmosphere of community, which validates and normalizes one’s emotional reactions, our group members learn different ways to grieve, all of which are natural and acceptable.
Grief support groups are increasingly being recognized as an effective way to promote healing through education and support after the loss of a loved one or close friend. Coastal Hospice bereavement group members report a strong positive impact based on both the psycho-educational aspects of groups and the 'haven' setting we provide for emotional expression and release of feelings. Doing grief work can lead to self-discovery, self-reflection, introspection, transformation, and healing. There is growth through grief.
Grief support groups all have emotional support and grief education as goals. The ongoing model allows the opportunity to build deeper connections. From the field of neuroscience, we learn that safety and security are necessary to heal trauma and provide healthier emotional well-being in general- even without trauma as a factor. A facilitator-supported conversation lends to the safety piece. I let the attendees decide how long they need to come and provide opportunities for self-assessment along the way. Both timelimited and ongoing models have good reasoning behind them. In the groups I facilitate, people gather and stay for as long as they are benefiting from the group. An individual's grief has its own timeline, and I honor that. This is sacred work, and I feel privileged to be part of it.

Creative Engagement and Healing through Art: Reflections as a Hospice Social Worker
By Cristina Mahmood
Supporting our community is a privilege we deeply value. We were honored to be a sponsor for the Creative Engagement: Empowering Caregivers Symposium, organized by Stories Love Music and the Art League of Ocean City. Representing Coastal Hospice, our Education Coordinator, Anna Smith, along with Social Workers Rachel Schreck and Cristina Mahmood, attended this impactful event. Cristina found the experience especially meaningful and shares her reflections below.
“One of the most powerful takeaways for me was the idea that 'art is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.' It reinforced how essential creative activities are for patients and caregivers. These moments of creativity can bring joy, connection, and a sense of purpose—even during the most challenging times.
I enjoyed the Lego/Music Workshop, which demonstrated how music and hands-on activities like Lego building can help people with dementia stay engaged while also easing caregivers' burnout. It was a reminder that small, playful moments can make a huge difference. Even when words fail, activities like these provide a meaningful ways for patients to connect and feel present.
This symposium gave me new ideas to incorporate into my work, such as using legacy projects to capture special memories or fidget toys to help patients stay calm. Most importantly, it reinforced the need to support caregivers as well. Caregiving can be overwhelming, and creative engagement offers both patients and caregivers a way to reconnect with themselves and each other.
I left the symposium feeling inspired to bring more creativity into my work. Whether through music, storytelling, or small acts of kindness, I hope to help patients and families experience moments of joy and meaning, even at the end of life. These tools aren’t just about comfort—they honor each person’s unique story and create lasting connections that truly matter.
Thank you to Stories Love Music and the Art League of Ocean City for hosting us and providing a space to support and empower our caregiver community through knowledge and creative engagement."
Cristina
Reflections
Music for Life
By Hayley Stayman
Our
current patient, Nadine Jackson, has spent a lifetime immersed in the performing arts. Growing up with a father who was both a choir director and an accomplished singer, she naturally followed in his footsteps. An avid singer and guitarist in her younger years, Nadine later became an active member of the Community Players in Salisbury, taking on various roles both on and off stage. Her love for theater and music has been a defining part of her life.
As I’ve gotten to know Nadine, her husband, Jim, and her best friend, Bettie Messick, we've shared countless stories of her time on stage. She often expressed a wish to sing for others again, a sentiment that sparked an idea as we got into spirited music-making together. After a few visits around the same topic, the idea was hatched: Why not bring her music back to life? Together, we selected some of her favorite and most well-known songs to share with family and friends.
Over the next few visits, we practiced, chose our concert attire, and carefully planned the guest list. I created a music program, An Afternoon of Music with Nadine, featuring eight songs for everyone to follow along and sing together. With the help of an adaptive device, Nadine was even able to dust off her guitar and play once more after many years away from it. Music became a bridge for socialization, self-expression, and reminiscing, bringing joy to her and her loved ones as her cognitive decline became more apparent. Despite the challenges, she lit up with each song, singing every word— songs she once performed for crowds many years ago, now unlocking memories that had begun to fade. The music often reminds her of stories otherwise lost due to time and disease.
Nadine performed for a loving audience of nearly 25 people, including her spouse, children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, extended family, and her entire hospice team. Everyone joined in, singing and sharing stories, making the day as special as Nadine herself. They came together to show their support and witness how her love for music has shaped and sustained her through the years.
And, just like any good music hour, the event ended with refreshments, provided by her devoted husband, Jim, and plenty of photos to commemorate the day!
Alexandria, Nadine’s nurse, shared, “When I became Mrs. Jackson’s nurse case manager last summer, I quickly noticed her deep love for creativity. Music, art, and flowers have been cornerstones of her life. I learned that she was preparing a concert for her family, working with music therapy to reignite her creative spirit. This brought a smile to my face.
During my visits, she would play short tunes on various instruments around her home— Mrs. Jackson is truly a multi-instrumentalist. On the day of the concert, her family gathered to support her, and I witnessed her pure inner joy. She smiled and laughed with her loved ones while doing what she loved most—creating.
Helping patients affirm life and supporting them on their journey has been my privilege, and moments like these remind me why I am so dedicated to being a nurse.”
Music is a versatile and universally accessible modality, remaining a source of connection and expression regardless of age, illness, or other limitations. For Nadine, music became a powerful way to engage and connect with others while enhancing her quality of life, especially as traditional forms of communication became more challenging.
Hayley
"Nadine has always been deeply connected to music, growing up in a musical family. Her father, a choir director with a voice reminiscent of an opera singer, instilled in her a lifelong love for song. She went on to share her talents as the Church Choir Director at Christ Methodist Church in Salisbury, MD, a role she held for 10 years. Nadine has an incredible gift for music and can still recall many of her favorite songs. She especially loves easy-listening music, which continues to bring her joy and comfort." With a chuckle, he added, "The only song I know is Happy Birthday! "

Lund,
BSN,
RN | Registered Nurse Outreach Liaison
I will be covering Worcester County, serving as a direct connection for our community partners, provider offices, and Atlantic General Hospital. I’m excited to work closely with and support healthcare providers, patients and families, and local facilities. By building trustworthy relationships, I aim to increase awareness and utilization of our services and resources while working to eliminate any negative perceptions associated with the word 'hospice.' My overall goal is to improve the quality of life and preserve the dignity of our loved ones and their families during the end-of-life journey.
I joined the Coastal Hospice team with over twelve years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with a background primarily in the intensive care unit, as well as risk management/quality and community care coordination. I received my associate degree in nursing from Anne Arundel Community College and my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Notre Dame of Maryland University. For the past ten years, I’ve worked as a registered nurse at Atlantic General Hospital. I’m acutely aware of the challenges and barriers that arise as the end of life approaches. I’m grateful that my personal and professional experiences have led me to this position with Coastal Hospice, where I can continue to make a positive impact in the community I love and call home.
Outside of work, I find joy in cooking and exploring new recipes, diving into a good book, and staying active. I also love spoiling my Shih Tzu, Audrey, spending quality time with my family, and enjoying trips to the beach or water park. When I’m not on the go, you might find me indulging in a little shopping.
I am beyond thankful for this opportunity and am looking forward to making a difference!
My roots run deep on the Eastern Shore—I was born and raised in Berlin, Maryland, and graduated from Stephen Decatur High School. I went on to earn both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Salisbury University.
As a licensed social worker, I have been dedicated to the medical field since 2011. My career has included roles such as Social Services Director at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Social Work Case Manager at both Atlantic General Hospital and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Salisbury.
Now, as a Provider & Community Relations Liaison covering Wicomico and Somerset Counties, I continue my passion for guiding patients and families through the complexities of the end-of-life journey. Having witnessed the emotional challenges and resource gaps firsthand, I am committed to providing the support and advocacy they need during this critical time.
Outside of work, my two children, Kendall (12) and Jackson (9), keep me on my toes! I love spending time outdoors— whether it’s at the beach, by the pool, or simply soaking up the sun. I’m also passionate about holiday decorating and celebrations. At home, I tend to my growing farm, which is home to goats, pigs, chickens, and soon, baby sheep, all while nurturing my love for gardening.
Our expert team takes educational opportunities to share vital information about Coastal Hospice and the services we provide to the community. Tell us your favorite work memory?
One of my favorite memories from work involves a patient whose final wish was to visit the beach and hear the waves one last time. It may sound simple, but making it happen was anything but. Everyone came together in such a powerful way—social workers, spiritual counselors, CNAs, volunteers, family members, and even members of the community all played a role. We made it a reality, and it was amazing!
Watching that patient experience the peace and joy of the ocean, surrounded by love and support, was unforgettable. It reminded me of the profound impact hospice can have—not just in medical care but in honoring life’s most meaningful moments. It was truly amazing and something I’ll carry with me always.
Is there anything special you would like to share?
One of the things I value most is spending time with my son, who’s in high school. It’s such a reminder of how fast time passes—especially after my daughter left for college in Savannah, GA. I’ve learned to cherish every moment with both of them, and I make it a point to visit her in Savannah whenever I can. You realize time is precious at any phase in life.
What is your favorite spring activity or spot on the Eastern Shore?
My favorite spring activity on the Eastern Shore— especially before the season officially starts—is grabbing my bike and taking a ride on the boardwalk. There’s something so calming, and I feel a deep sense of gratitude for living so close to the ocean.

welcoming us with open arms. The Margot & Valerie Duo, Margot & Gabe Resto, John Paul Chamberlain, Makayla Lizzy Music, and DJ Garret Roe who generously donated their time and talent to these events. They helped make the evenings more festive and unforgettable.
Because of your generosity, we can continue providing compassionate care to patients and families across Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. Every contribution makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. Thank you for being part of our mission to promote dignity and quality of life for patients and families who face life-limiting conditions.

We are actively planning more outreach and fundraising community events in our service areas—stay tuned for details on one near you! Join us on Thursday, August 21, from 5 PM to 7 PM for a relaxing evening of networking and community support during the Worcester County Chamber’s Business After Hours, held at the Macky & Pam Stansell House Meditation Garden and Labyrinth on the Isle of Wight Bay in Ocean Pines.
Community Partners Support
A Perfect Face Day Spa continues its generous support of Coastal Hospice through its annual Pamper Yourself for Charity event. Coastal Hospice was presented with a check for $2,585, with proceeds benefiting charity care at the Macky & Pam Stansell House in Ocean Pines, MD.
For 29 years and counting, Carol Withers, owner of A Perfect Face Day Spa, along with her dedicated staff, has organized the Pamper Yourself for Charity fundraisers. This special event is held in honor of Carol’s mother, Elizabeth “Libby” Chaney, who passed away from breast cancer in 1995 while receiving care from Coastal Hospice at home.
We want to extend our gratitude to Carol, her staff, customers, and the community, who make the fundraiser a success annually and make a meaningful impact with their generous contributions.
The Beat Goes On, Inc. donated an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to our Coastal Palliative Care Clinic located in Salisbury, Maryland. The addition ensures we will be prepared to provide rapid response to patients, family, visitors, staff, or anyone who may need it.
Founded in 2021 by Jamie Ensor, a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survivor. Jamie was 34 when she suffered SCA and chose to use her second chance at life to make a difference on the shore. They provide AEDs to organizations in need, offers CPR demonstrations in the community, and raises awareness about the symptoms of SCA while also educating bystanders on how to save a life. Since 2021, The Beat Goes On, Inc. has donated 31 AEDs on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, with our Coastal Palliative Care Clinic being the 32nd to receive this life-saving device.
We are incredibly grateful to The Beat Goes On, Inc. for their generous donation and for taking the time to provide us with life-saving tips.
Coastal Hospice is deeply grateful for these donations, which support our mission to promote dignity and enhance the quality of life for patients and families facing life-limiting conditions.
