Add a touch of coastal to your home
"Diamonds are a girls’ best friend." That sentiment has always evoked emotions and excitement. There is a unique feeling that you feel inside of you when you get a beautiful piece of jewelry. Jewelry is very personal for many people; whether it is who the item is gifted from, the occasion of the gift or the designer of the jewelry. Jewelry becomes a part of a collection of which many become part of family heirlooms to be passed along to family generations.
Coastal Drive Magazine talks with Lepa Galeb-Roskopp, Founder and Designer of Luxury Jewelry Brand, Misahara about her journey creating her brand and her passion to be different.
CDM: Your jewelry designs are so elegant and unique! When did you start designing jewelry?
LGR: Misahara was born out of an unusual circumstance, but I love to tell this story because I believe it speaks to my essence as a designer and really wanting to be different from everyone else. My husband, Rob, would gift me jewelry over the years, and while I loved the gifts, I felt they weren’t personal enough and quite frankly they were styles that I saw everyone else wearing. So, I decided to visit a local goldsmith and began re-imagining the jewels. I found a passion for jewelry design during this process and with the support of my family and friends decided to start my own brand. Misahara began in 2014 and it has been a long, wild journey since inception.
CDM: Did you always have a passion for artistic design?
LGR: I think artistic design evolves as you go through different stages of your life, and it comes in waves of passion based on what you’re experiencing. I was very fortunate that I had an aunt that was in the diplomatic corps, and she was stationed around the world, so I was able to visit her often. The most memorable time I had was visiting her in Paris and it really sparked my love of fashion, art and design at a young age. I spent a lot of time in Paris for four
years on and off every summer and I think that my artist mindset really formed and I have loved design ever since.
CDM: One thing that makes Misahara so special is its unique and creative designs. What inspires you when you are creating each collection?
LGR: I am honestly inspired by life in general and although it may seem like a cliché, Mother Nature is truly what sparks most of my design inspiration. Nature tells a story to me, and the beauty of our minds is that we interpret what we see differently. When I experience nature it evokes and inspires jewelry designs, whether it be using colored gemstones to depict a sunset or etches in the gold to embody a sunrise. It is so important to me that whatever I create is not based on what everyone else is doing, I design based on my authentic experience in nature or whatever circumstances evoked the design or collection.
CDM: Many artists and designers tell a story through their creations. What story are you sharing with the world through Misahara jewelry designs?
LGR: I like to believe I have a unique and special view of the world just based on my circumstances.
Although I was born in California, I live and am inspired all over the globe (literally) with homes in California, New York, South Africa, and Montenegro. When I’m in California and designing I find myself using vibrant colors and easy effortless silhouettes that evoke the ‘Cali’ lifestyle. When I’m designing in New York, the fastpaced city induces structured and architectural designs. Our Chain City Collection, a customer favorite was inspired by the concrete jungle. Africa is an exhilarating design location, and our Serengeti Collection came to life from the never-ending stars in the sky to the rawness of the land that is depicted in the raw diamond beads. Montenegro is a landscape of colors and mountains that touch the sea, and our Adriatic Collection was born in that region. My creations are really inspired by my experiences living in different areas and traveling the world. While my journey inspires the designs that we create and that are available to customers; it is the person that wears them and loves them which becomes their story and that is most important and what we love. I have a story for all the collections and what inspired them to come to life, but it is what happens after a customer receives them that matters most. I hope that Misahara jewelry will be heirlooms for generations, that women will wear their jewels on special and meaningful occasions and remember it fondly. Those are the stories that are being told with my jewelry designs, the story of the wearer.
CDM: You travel to many places around the world which is such an amazing opportunity to see so many different cultures. Is there one place in particular that inspires you more than others?
LGR: Now this is a great question because yes, I travel the world and I love to experience different
places and cultures. I love to see how people dress and behave in their truest surrounding environment. If I had to pick a place that really inspires more than anywhere else, it would have to be Africa. The vast terrain, the animals, the uniqueness of the ecosystem. I’m awestruck by the fact that there’s a rainforest and dry desert and then plains like the Savannahs and Serengeti. Especially as I get older, I find myself in love with regions like this that are all encompassing of Mother Nature at her finest.
CDM: Now that we know your inspirations behind some of your collections, do you have any specific collections that are particularly meaningful to you and why?
LGR: Really every single collection that I have designed is special and meaningful to me. What I love is that I can reflect back on a collection and remember the trip, the summer or circumstance that inspired it so they are all attached to a really great memory for me. I also believe our jewels are timeless and that means they will never go out of style and can be enjoyed forever. Most of our pieces you can dress up or down. You can wear it to a gala, you can wear it to a luncheon, and you can wear it to work. If I had to pick one collection that I wear nonstop, it would be Chain City and our Diamond Charms right now, but that is for the moment. Then it may switch to something else, but I always go back to wear pieces from previous or existing collections because obsessed with them, and will be forever.
CDM: Are there any new collections coming out that you can share?
LGR: 2024 is going to be exciting because I am designing a capsule collection from all our existing silhouettes and design motifs. There will be everyday pieces and more diamond encrusted pieces. I’ve got Rose de France gemstones on my mind right now and really am in love with the color and essence of them. There will be gemstones mixed with diamonds and I’m bringing in beads because I love working with beads. It’s going to be upscale boho chic sexy designs.
CDM: You have established a brand partnership with the iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer, Ferrari. Do you have a personal passion for sports cars?
LGR: I've always had a passion for the highest quality craftsmanship in anything, whether it be haute couture jewelry or in the car industry. The ethos between Ferrari and Misahara remains clear and consistent and our values as luxury brands are aligned. Of course, Ferrari is a brand that everyone recognizes and has been around for 78 years however and I believe their longevity as one of the world’s greatest luxury brands is in part because of their
mission to always be the best. I look at Ferrari with an aspirational mindset because they are an example of where I want to be as Misahara continues to grow. As far as driving their cars, I mean let's face the facts, once you've driven a Ferrari it is hard to even imagine driving another car. The roar of the engine is like music to your ears. I've had quite a few Ferrari’s through the years but it’s hard to open a Ferrari on the streets. I wish I had more time on the racetrack with them. I will always have an affinity for Ferrari and their overall presence as a brand in our society.
CDM: Now that we have heard about the cultural inspirations in your life, do you have any inspirational quotes or mottos that you live by?
LGR: I honestly live by one motto, and I really do believe that you have to follow your journey. I’m deeply in love with Mother Nature and I talk about it so much I think my kids think I'm obsessed. Einstein did say “look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” And I believe Einstein was correct.
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
CDM: With your love and deep connection with nature, what is the company’s sustainability strategy?
LGR: I love this planet and want to help preserve what has predominantly inspired my designs. We make every effort to remain sustainable by using recycled gold, repurposing stones, and reimagining designs on a regular basis. All of our gemstones are sourced from ethical mines where the workers are treated fairly, and the communities are supported. A great example of this is our partner Gemfields, a UK based emerald and ruby mine. They make tremendous efforts to give back to the local areas in Africa where the incredible gems are sourced. I will continue to create beautiful jewelry in a way that in consciously protecting our environment, and honestly I do this in every aspect of my life with other businesses and personally.
CDM: Are there any nonprofit organizations or foundations that you are involved in or have a passion for?
LGR: Over the years Misahara and myself personally have been involved with various incredible nonprofits and we continue to support them to this day. Currently my primary focus in the nonprofit space is with the Breakers FC, a soccer academy that I own with my husband and other partners in California. The company is a 501c3, and our mission is to help children from socioeconomically underprivileged backgrounds play soccer and provide opportunities to them for a better future. We are building out a stadium with state-of-the-art facilities to support the academy as well as developing a professional soccer team in the Monterey Bay area. In this community there is a large group of youth that have been left behind be-
cause of the segregation in the Hispanic community of all our farm workers. These families are amazing and have struggled in the very expensive state of California. Aside from regular schooling it is an additional challenge to give their children access to play soccer at the highest level. Our foundation is providing this opportunity to these deserving families and their talented youth with a passion for the sport. The Breakers FC is creating a player pathway for them whether it be furthering their education or playing professionally. In addition, we have a partnership with Albright College in Pennsylvania that will be giving them free online college education. If you look at my history of philanthropy, you’ll see a common theme of helping children, I really aim to give back to children in need. The Breakers FC is another channel of giving back to underprivileged youth, but I am doing it in a bigger and better way by building it myself, with the help of some amazing partners.
CDM: You have accomplished so much with your company and all that you are doing to help give youth a brighter future. Congratulations on such amazing accomplishments! Starting a business is not an easy task. Can you share any details about starting Misahara as a woman owned business and any challenges you may have faced in your journey and how you overcame those challenges? LGR: I could say that owning your own business is a forever challenge. Does it ever get easier? Some aspects make it easier, but you always have challenges and you always have disappointments. I think for me as I've evolved and going on this this journey with Misahara, I've learned that it’s imperative to understand your market and what makes up your
core customer. The challenges never stop coming because being in a luxury space means that our business is determined by the economic climate, and it changes, as we all know. Pivoting and evolving is key. Some of the most challenging times have been when 46 of my jewels were confiscated in Moscow from customs and we've struggled to get them back. We found out that they illegally took the jewels, and it was an inside job. I've also been burglarized at my home in California as well and it's traumatic when everything gets stolen, but I guess the one thing that I always use was Carlo Ponte’s quote to Sophia Loren when she got her jewels taken and he said to her “do not cry over something that cannot cry over you” so it's been a life lesson.
CDM: You started your company through a personal passion and dream. What advice can you offer other women looking to pursue their dreams?
LGR: The first piece of advice is that no matter what you do, no matter how you look at life and how you think there's a big learning curve. I do believe that you crawl before you walk and if you haven't crawled, you're not going to be able to walk. The thing I would say is take your time to understand and it's great you think it may be your passion but once it becomes more business oriented you lose your passion. Kind of like a marriage or a relationship you're so excited in the beginning; it's there and it's everything, your stomach turns you get so excited and then it gets more normal and then as it as life really evolves,
you're like ok, I really got to work at this. For me Misahara is so beautiful, but there's so much work behind the scenes that sometimes I’m just so tired, so for me to tell someone is it as great as it is fun all the time no. It is such hard work, but your passion will get you through all that hard work.
CDM: You are a truly admirable women! I am personally obsessed with your designs and I know that our readers will be obsessed too! Where can all of your fabulous Misahara collections be purchased?
LGR: You can purchase Misahara online through our website at misahara. com, via phone or through a personalized, modern virtual shopping experience. We also have wonderful wholesale partners around the country, Atelier d’ Emotion in NYC and the Four Seasons in Maui are two current locations where we are now. We have a trunk show model where we have pop up showcases for a few months at a time throughout the year in different stores around the USA. In December, we were at the iconic Bergdorf Goodman in NYC and next month who knows where we will be. It’s a unique model because we get to be in front of new customers all throughout the year. Finally, if you are part of the Ferrari community you can shop our jewels at a variety of their events throughout the year. About once a month we are either at a Ferrari Challenge race or a dealership party selling our jewels to the incredible Ferrari community.
“It is such hard work, but your passion will get you through all that hard work.”

Did you know that there is a deep rooting of Japanese history in Palm Beach County? Since opening in 1977, the Morikami Museum has been a center for Japanese arts and culture in South Florida. With rotating exhibitions, tea ceremonies performed monthly (October through May) in the Seishin-an tea house, and educational outreach programs with local schools and organizations, Morikami strives to spread appreciation for the living culture of Japan.
The original building, named the Yamato-kan, is modeled after a Japanese villa. The Yamato-kan offers exhibits chronicling the history of the Yamato Colony, which was founded by a group of pioneering Japanese farmers in the early 1900s in what is now northern Boca Raton. Led by George Sukeji Morikami, one of the last remaining settlers, their vision was to cultivate a
new home and establish an agricultural community in South Florida. Despite facing numerous challenges, their perseverance and dedication left an indelible mark on the region's cultural landscape.
The principal museum building opened in 1993 to meet popular demand for more programming, more versatile facilities, and to satisfy the needs of a growing community. The museum’s architecture is inspired by traditional Japanese design. The building features three galleries, a 225-seat theater, an authentic tea house with a viewing gallery, classrooms, a museum store, the Cornell Cafe, and lakeside terraces for a panoramic view while dining.
In 2001, Morikami completed a major garden expansion and renovation. The new gardens reflect major periods of Japanese garden design, from the 8th to the 20th
century, and serve as an outdoor extension of the museum. According to the garden designer, Hoichi Kurisu, each garden is intended to express the character and ideas of a unique counterpart in Japan without attempting to duplicate those gardens, and to have it seamlessly flow together as one garden.
The 16 acres that surround Morikami’s two museum buildings include expansive Japanese gardens with strolling paths, resting areas, a world-class bonsai collection, and lakes teeming with koi and other wildlife. The wider 200acre park features nature trails, pine forests, and picnic areas.
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, with its unique gardens and collections, is one of Palm Beach County’s most treasured cultural attractions. Take a day and experience the culture of the far east without leaving the area.
Now on display at Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach is Origami in the Garden, an exhibition created by artists Kevin and Jennifer Box.
Spending an afternoon walking through a garden and thinking "Wasn't origami an art form that was supposed to fit into the palm of your hand?"
Origami, meaning “folding paper” in Japanese, reflects the essence of creativity: making something out of (basically) nothing. Start with a simple square piece of paper. Apply the art of origami, folding the paper in a creative way to produce an elegant object—a soaring bird, gliding plane, galloping pony, floating boat, or an emerging butterfly.
The exhibit on display at the Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach now thru May 14, 2024, gives you an idea of the size and scope of artist Kevin Box's vision. The installation includes 13 large-scale outdoor sculptures & 8 pieces for an inte-
rior educational exhibit, ‘Inside Out’. Flying birds, emerging butterflies, floating boats and soaring paper airplanes are just a few of the subjects featured in the show. The crown jewel of the exhibition is Master Peace, a 25 foot tall sculpture of 1,000 stainless steel origami peace cranes. 500 of the cranes gather together in the monument and 500 are scattered into the world as individual collector pieces. A black granite base (or pond) below the monument serves as a mirror that reflects all 1,000 cranes keeping them together forever. Seeing this work of art in person is a powerful experience.
Above, you can see an example of the scale in reference. On the left, is the one piece of folded paper giving the look of what the final pegasus would become. Next
to it is the actual sculpture. The model is no more than 10 inches tall. The actual work is 8 feet long! The pieces when they are created do actually start from one sheet of paper. From there, the creative team uses such techniques as lost-wax casting and fabrication, the sculptures in this exhibit glorify the precision of origami in stately museum-quality metals. In the beginning, Box had to do every exhausting step of the process himself. Today, he still begins every piece with a blank page and manages it through the 35-step, 12+ week process of casting with the help of fine art foundry and fabrication teams. Pieces are cast in bronze, aluminum or stainless steel depending on the design requirements.
Enjoy the day exploring this rare exhibit.
Local artist April Davis puts her unique spin on life in Florida thru her original acrylic paintings of iconic images. These create a window into nature’s landscapes, bringing the outside in and drawing attention to that world.
Relocating to Florida more than twenty years ago, local Jupiter artist, April Davis notes, “We are surrounded by beauty. It’s truly an artist’s paradise.” Her series Gateway to Paradise — Jupiter Inlet and Loxahatchee River are some of her most popular and well-known works. Davis is quick to point out that her paintings reflect both what she sees and what she feels. Those parameters are evident in the photo-like quality of her tropical landscape series, as well as the more abstract, painterly style of her sunrise/sunset series.
Davis is inspired by nature. She has a unique talent for using light and color to create a mood that brings a sense of beauty and tranquility to every image. “By working on a large scale, I believe it becomes easier for the viewer to visually move inside my paintings, being transported to that place or space, and per-
ceiving the image not through thought, but through feeling,” explains the artist. She hopes viewers will visually step inside her paintings of lush tropical landscapes, vivid cityscape recreations and stunning, rich seascapes. The paintings are of impressive scale, creating space and depth with a panoramic view of the scene.
Along with the act of painting, she considers nature to be a meditative experience that connects everyone to God.
Some of Davis’ career highlights include a large diptych installation in the Pittsburgh Steelers owner’s box at Three Rivers Stadium, commissioned cityscapes of South Beach’s famed Lincoln Road, and Ft. Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard, acclaimed exhibitions in museums, galleries, and private and corporate collections across the nation.
Davis’ exhibition schedule includes Florida’s most prestigious and notable art festivals such as the ArtiGras in Jupiter, Art Fest by the Sea in Juno Beach, South Miami Art Festival, Old Island Days in Key West, Marathon’s Pigeon Key Arts Festival and Epcot Center’s Art in the Garden Festival.
You can view April’s work at her gallery in Jupiter, as well as through engagements at many top-ranked art festivals.

With a flood of new medications hitting the market leading to weight loss, as well as diabetes management, popularity is soaring. But, is there any downside that is not being seen?
An expert offers his opinion on the safety of this class of medications.
By: Brett A. Osborn, DO, FAANS, CSCS Board Certified Neurosurgeon (ABNS) • Board Certified Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), • Acclaimed Author; Get Serious Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Mary’s Medical Center - West Palm Beach, FL CEO of Senolytix, LLC - West Palm Beach, FlGLP-1 agonists like Ozempic have taken the spotlight in the modern narrative of weight management and diabetes care, becoming as pivotal as antibiotics once were in the realm of infectious diseases. That’s not a typo. The reason is compelling: with over 70% of Americans categorized as overweight or obese, and obesity being the gateway to the nation's major killers—coronary artery disease, diabetes, cancer—it's a call to action for a solution.
The positive effects of GLP-1 agonists are irrefutable. These medications have been shown to reduce appetite and induce significant weight loss, which is why they're making waves in the healthcare industry. Take, for instance, the publicized case of Oprah
Winfrey, whose experience with weight management has often been in the limelight. From IVbased diets to modified starvation, her lifelong weight loss journey has been marred by se-
rial failures. Until now. Because Ozempic is now doing the work for her, namely squelching her appetite. And that’s nearly the whole battle. Distilled down, weight loss is simply a matter of calories in vs. calories out. Burn more than you eat, and your waistline melts away.
However, it's not all smooth sailing. Sharon Osbourne's experience brings forth the other side of the coin, highlighting the potential negative effects and the need for a cautious approach. Every medication has its pros and cons, and GLP-1 agonists are no exception. Side effects can range from mild gastrointestinal issues and hair loss to more severe ones if not used under strict medical supervision – and that means prescribed by experienced physicians.
And while the weight loss effects can be re-
markable, an overlooked downside is muscle loss. Muscle isn't just for show; it's the cornerstone of our resilience, a vital player in disease prevention and glucose regulation. Yet, medications like Ozempic can induce significant muscle loss along with fat loss due to their appetite-suppressive effects, which put patients into a caloric deficit.
To counteract this, keeping a vigilant eye on muscle mass is crucial. A male’s body weight ideally should be comprised of 50% muscle and a female’s 45%. These are not just arbitrary numbers but benchmarks that, if met, can bolster biochemical health and ward off age-related diseases. And that’s why we measure these anthropometry benchmarks in our clinic.
So, how do you navigate these
waters? The key is balance. Patients should aim to consume enough calories to match their sedentary basal metabolic rate, even while on Ozempic. This allows the medication to assist with weight loss without leading to muscle wasting. Strength training is also critical in this context. It’s a strategic tool to maintain muscle mass and stimulate appetite despite the medication-induced satiety. Remember, Ozempic is “injectable appetite suppression.”
And let's remember the importance of personalized care. Not everyone will respond to medications in the same way, which is why the stories of Oprah Winfrey and Sharon Osbourne, the latter of whom should find a new doctor - are so instructive. They remind us that while GLP-1 agonists can be a powerful ally in
our health journey, they require a tailored approach, with careful monitoring and an integrated lifestyle strategy that includes diet, exercise, and possibly hormone replacement therapy to temper muscle loss.
GLP-1 agonists are a beacon of hope in a sea of health concerns related to obesity. They offer a promising path to weight loss and better health, provided they are used responsibly and with a holistic view of the individual’s health needs. With the right approach, these medications can indeed be the ally we need in the ongoing battle against obesity and its related diseases. In my opinion, they are modern medicine’s holy grail.

The Republic of Costa Rica, located in Central America, is a top vacation destination yearround for a multitude of reasons. Mostly known for its rain forests and beaches, there’s natural beauty that spans across the entire country from mountains to the sea. From family friendly offerings to all-inclusive luxurious resorts, Costa Rica offers top tier accommodations, where service is truly a pleasure. The diversity of this land is what appealed to my husband and I around the late spring, early summer months. We were drawn in by the diverse landscape including forests, beaches, rivers, wildlife, and excursions for an action-packed outlet from the monotony back at home. Thrill seekers can scratch their itch with activities including white water rafting, ziplining, cave tubing, surfing, bungie jumping, back road ATV’ing, and horseback riding. Nature seekers can enjoy wildlife tours and encounters with sloths, howler monkeys, whales, turtles, reptiles, and exotic birds, such as macaws.
Around 30% of Costa Rica is protected land so there is no shortage of animals and wildlife. This part of the world protects its nature through national parks and reserves. We were most surprised by the exquisite lodging
and food. There’s an endless supply of eco-chic, luxurious lodging options in the jungle and beach towns. This country is also becoming well known for its food scene. Foodies travel to the country to follow innovative chefs opening vibey restaurants, cafes, and bars in the more populated towns. Rice, beans, plantains, and potatoes are the staple of every Costa Rican meal. The diverse flavors of the local Tico cuisine will have you drooling for your next meal. Fresh foods sourced locally was an added plus for our culinary experience. Vegan and vegetarian options were also readily available at most restaurants. Craft coffee, artisanal chocolate,
and sugarcane are important staples in the local culture. There is no shortage of tours and tastings to taste these local delicacies. We really enjoyed the hot springs. You can find your own spa in the middle of the jungle while gazing up at the Arenal volcano or monkeys swinging in the trees above you. Arenal specifically is known for its geothermal pools to relax in after a long day of exploring.
We started our trip to Costa Rica via a three-hour direct flight from Fort Lauderdale to San Jose, Costa Rica. Upon landing, we rented a car and drove an additional three hours to the Arenal area. Shuttles are available if you don’t feel comfortable driving on the mountainous roads. The roads are littered with outdoor dogs, often napping on the streets, so you need to stay aware on this drive. Many major airlines offer nonstop flights to San Jose and Liberia making it easy to get in and out of the country.
The Arenal area is famous for the Arenal Volcano, tall and imposing, towering over the town. Costa Rica has more than 60 volcanoes, but this is the most popular to visit. It provides views from almost everywhere in town and offers great hikes, ziplining, and hot springs around its base. There were many lodging options that offered geothermal pools to
relax in. Arenal is a good start to check off all your adventure bucket list items.
My husband and I booked the romantic five-star rainforest lodge, Amor Arenal, where nature meets luxury. The property is made up of separate villas that each have their own heated spring water plunge pools. The bathrooms are floor to ceiling windows that open to the jungle with spectacular views of the Arenal volcano. The property is tucked in the jungle with lush trails to the restaurant, bar, spa, pool, meditation/yoga deck and gym. They have fresh and healthy food options which we enjoyed each day at our complimentary breakfasts. This was an adult only property allowing for you and your loved one to unwind in tranquility. We fell head over heels for our room. It was an open layout with A-frame vaulted ceilings and windows that made you feel engulfed in the lively jungle. We drifted off to sleep each night with the sounds of nature surrounding us. Each villa is spaced from your neighbors for a truly private experience. The deck connects the heated pool to the massive bathroom shower allowing for easy in and out access.
We enjoyed lounging on the two Adirondack chairs gazing out at the volcano in the near distance. The property offered fitness and mediation classes to start or end your days in a relaxed headspace. Amor Arenal was pure luxury with spectacular amenities. We were lucky enough to witness
multiple wildlife spotting’s including howler monkeys on the trees just outside our casita, along with a mother and baby sloth hanging on the trees by the reception area.
The towns around the Arenal volcano offer a variety of excursions. We started at the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges in La Fortuna. This was a great way to explore the diverse ecosystem by walking on a series of suspension hanging bridges in the treetop canopies. The park consists of a two-mile loop that winds through the jungle over six hanging bridges. On the trail you’ll get impressive views of tropical plants, trees, waterfalls, and exotic wildlife.
The Arenal area is also famous for its white-water rafting tours. The Balsa River offers lower class rafting while the Upper Balsa or Sarapiqui offers more challenging class options. Tours are typically 5 hours with included breaks for lunch and snacks. If water sports aren’t your speed, this area is littered with zipline and bungee tours for stunning views of the volcano, waterfalls, and surrounding jungle. Most tours are 2-3 hours and include transfers to and from hotels. On our tour we experienced the thrilling Tarzan
swing, a freefall on a bungee cord that turns into a giant swinging motion over a canyon. Swinging back and forth over the jungle was the highlight of this tour once I got over my initial fear of free falling. As you are exploring the town be sure to keep your eyes peeled for groups of cars parked on the side of the roads. These are usually swimming areas with rope swings or natural hot springs that the locals go to.
Now that we fully immersed in the jungle experience, it was time to head to the beautiful beaches of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Santa Teresa located on the Nicoya Peninsula is one of the five Blue Zones in the world. This town offers health inspired activities to naturally enhance physical and mental health through clean food and fulfilling encounters. We were drawn to the lifestyle of this town and wanted to experience the secret to a long, happy, stress free quality of life that the locals have here. The town is also famous for local vacationing celebrities including Mel Gibson, Mark Zuckerberg, Tom Brady, and Gisele Bundchen.
Airways. The fleet consists of small aircrafts that hold around 10 passengers. We sat directly behind the pilots with a clear view of the cockpit and out the front windows. During the flight the passengers were offered a cooler of local ‘Imperial’ beers to pass around to ease nerves. Landing was one of the most thrilling experiences. You can see a thin
airstrip stretching out from the mountains to the sea.
Our jaws hit the ground as we pulled up to the boutique hotel, Nantipa. The property is made up of luxurious beachfront bungalows allowing a sense of serene escapism. Our villa was Scandinavian and modern, decorated with local art and culture. The property has an open-air beachfront restaurant, Manzu, with fresh, local ingredients, which we enjoyed each evening for the breathtaking Pacific coast sunsets. We were able to relax and unwind at the Numu wellness center which provides spa services and wellness classes for guests.
There are many routes for this trip including public and private shuttles. We drove back to San Jose to take the 30-minute flight to Tambor on Costa Rica Green
You can’t help but grab your neighbor’s hand as you quickly descend. Once we landed, we joked that we didn’t need to book anymore excursions after the flight because it was such an experience in itself. From here we had a 40-minute shuttle to Santa Teresa for the last leg of our trip.
Santa Teresa has an international reputation for its surfing, so it was fitting that we gave it a go. We booked a half day beginner lesson through a local surf shop to catch some waves. Group and private lessons were available for all skill levels. This town is compiled of beach lovers who live to surf. The most popular form of transportation is by ATV which most often had a surfboard attached to the back. You’ll find world-class, yearround surfing and yoga here. No shirt, no shoes is a common way of life in this beach town. Mal Pais was listed as a top ten breathtaking beach by Forbes, and even though it’s a popular surfing area, it was one of the less crowded
beaches in the area. Playa Carmen and Playa Hermosa are two other surf and beach destinations in this area with great breaks.
Our favorite excursion of the trip was our ATV trip. We rented ATVs and took a private 4x4 vehicle only road from Santa Teresa to Montezuma through the jungle. We crossed the southwester edge of the Nicoya Peninsula through the dense jungle surrounded by howling monkeys and tropical birds. If you are wondering how these monkeys get their name, rev your engine to hear them roar!
Once we arrived in Montezuma, we explored the local town filled with craft artisans. We hiked the famous Montezuma waterfall and went for a dip to cool off. We ended our day at a beachfront, family-owned restaurant for sunset before heading back to Santa
Teresa. If ATV’ing isn’t for you, I highly recommend horseback riding in this part of the country. Most tours take you from jungle to beach offering a diverse experience while learning all about your surroundings from a local guide. We had a private tour which allowed us to run our horses on the beach and even through the water!
Costa Rica has so much to offer, from the jungle, wildlife, plants, food, culture, and people. This was a unique trip for us as we left with a sense of humbleness. The locals we met respected the land they lived on. As we boarded our puddle jumper plane to return to the mainland, I looked out my window at the beauty we were leaving behind. Not only the landscape, but the lifestyle. We felt lucky to experience such purity
and respect for our surroundings. It allowed us a chance to disconnect and feel at one with nature. This is a place where you can eat and live clean, comfortably, and happily. Locals find passion in what they do and support the surrounding community. There was no hustle or bustle but a passion for life that drives their economy. Lunch breaks are surf breaks, sunrise yoga starts your day off right, and the famous sunsets put you at ease in the evenings. We returned home wanting to incorporate a new practice of appreciation for our surroundings. Life passes too fast, we work to live, and take the small things for granted. Costa Rica is truly one of the worlds happiest countries in the world with a motto that we were happy to take home, “pura vida”, pure life!

Vero Beach, Florida, nestled centrally on the east coast, boasts a thriving culinary scene that's a haven for food connoisseurs. With more locally owned and one-of-a-kind restaurants than chains, Vero Beach is undoubtedly a foodie's paradise. In this article, I’m shining a spotlight on two exceptional dining destinations in the area: Costa d'Este Resort & Spa, owned by the illustrious Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and the hidden gem, Fire & Wine.
When you step into the exquisite world of Costa d'Este Resort & Spa, you'll instantly feel transported to a tropical vacation destination, even though it's right in our own backyard. During a recent visit, I had the privilege of experiencing their oceanfront beachside dinner for two, a truly romantic endeavor.
This exclusive dining experience is limited to just one couple per evening, ensuring an intimate and unforgettable encounter. Reservations are essential as this enchanting experience tends to fill up quickly. Imagine indulging in a sumptuous 4-course meal accompanied by champagne, all under the stars, with the soothing sound of ocean waves in the background. The icing on the cake is your personal server, dedicated to pampering you throughout the evening.
In the world of high-end dining, a new trend is emerging with restaurants opening in unassuming locations with minimal signage, inviting guests to seek them out and discover something truly special. One such establishment in Vero Beach is the captivating Fire & Wine, where the secret is indeed out.
Chef Chuck Arnold, the culinary mastermind behind Fire & Wine, is setting a new standard for creativity and innovation in the culinary world. His culinary creations are nothing short of extraordinary, rivaling what you'd expect to find in the bustling food scenes of New York City or other metropolitan hubs. Co-Owner, Roger Lord, host & sommelier has carefully curated a wine list that compliments the dishes perfectly, elevating your meal to an extraordinary level.
Reservations are a must at Fire & Wine, and I highly recommend you request to sit at the chef's counter, a limited space that accommodates only seven lucky diners each night. At the chef's counter, you get not only dinner but also a mesmerizing show. As you settle in, order a glass of wine and an appetizer to wet your appetite. Then, sit back and watch the magic happen right before your eyes and order what looks good.

As one chef introduces a new concept, another grows into a new location.By Cristyle Egitto
2777 S Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, FL 33405
Chef and Restauranter Julien Gremaud, of Avocado Grill in West Palm Beach and Avocado Cantina in Palm Beach Gardens, brought a new concept to the Dixie corridor in December. Pink Steak opened its doors to a swirl of anticipation just before Christmas, with a weekend dinner reservation still hard to come by weeks into the new year.
The swanky Miami-inspired steakhouse is transportive with its dimly lit dining room centered around a towering golden flamingo statue. The atmosphere is sexy and intimate yet energetic. Pops of pink brighten the space through flamingo wall murals and table linens while shades of greens from the foliage and stemmed glassware bring rich jewel tones. The aesthetic is a far cry from the typical masculine design seen in similar establishments, breathing life into the space and inviting a wide range of diners.
The steaks take center stage with a variety of cuts to choose from ranging from a classic Filet Mignon to an eye catching Tomahawk to a more decadent A5 Wagyu. Guests can amp up the flavor with sauces like their black garlic chimichurri and truffle hollandaise or add an accompaniment like broiled lobster tail or seared foie gras. Shareable sides include fresh black truffle fries, creamed spinach, and roasted cauliflower, among others. Non-steak lovers can choose from a selection of entrees including the Vegetable Wellington, Seared Salmon, and Maine Lobster Risotto. The sushi menu is a treat of its own with inventive rolls like the Pink Steak Roll and Two Step Tuna featuring spicy tuna and tuna sashimi.
The restaurant buzzes with an open concept kitchen and servers looking the part in smart uniforms complete with straw hats. Craft cocktails raise for a cheers while tables are filled with indulgent seafood platters of oysters, shellfish, jumbo lump crab, tuna cones, and sushi rolls. Caviar service is also available.

Ela Curry Kitchen, the popular Indian eatery located in Donald Ross Village moved a few doors down to become Ela Curry and Cocktails in December. The handiwork of Chef Pushkar Marathi, who also owns and operates sister restaurant Stage located in Palm Beach Gar-
dens, and his partners Ela translates to “cardamom” in Sanskrit.
The new space offers a much-expanded dining room featuring an indoor bar and lounge, and private dining space. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with an earthy color palette, reflective of the spices used in their dishes, with flashes of metallics seen in their dishware and flatware. A major addition to the atmosphere is the large outdoor courtyard with al fresco dining and the vibrant Peacock Tiki Bar. Featuring an expensive rum offering of over 50 global rums, mixologist Bootleg Greg is at the helm crafting inventive cocktails that are both delicious and experiential like the Perfecta Cuba Libre rum and coke.
Diners are treated to a menu that highlights the diversity of Indian cuisine and pays homage to Chef Pushkar’s family and heritage. The curries selection includes the popular Butter Chicken, alongside specialties like Kerala Beef Short Rib, and Local Fish Malvani. Ingredients are sourced from quality purveyors and locally as much as possible, including local farms and commercial fisherman. An array of cold and warm small plates like Pani Puri and Lamb Samosas are perfect for sharing along with a selection of breads like their Garlic Naan and chutneys and salads.
The atmosphere is warm and
inviting, like entering the home of a dear friend who is no stranger to hosting and welcoming guests to gather around the table. Ela is open for lunch and dinner daily and boasts a calendar of specials events including spirits tastings, pairing dinners, and cooking classes. Weekly programming also includes happy hour, music, and daily specials.

During this time the county boomed with new developments popping up. When I returned, I began @EatPalmBeach as a way to rediscover my hometown while supporting local businesses. People gather around food and beverage, so the dining scene was the perfect introduction to new communities, restaurants, and talent. The culinary offerings have exploded over the past decade, but here are a few of my “must sees” when crossing the county line.

Did you know that chimpanzees are the closest living relatives of humans? Humans share more of their DNA with chimpanzees than with monkeys, apes or any other groups.
Located in Fort Pierce, is one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world. You would never know that this rare facility is located in our backyard. Save the Chimps organization is saving the lives of many chimpanzees that were used in research, entertainment and military uses. Captive chimpanzees in the United States cannot be released back to the wild for multiple reasons. Chimpanzees must learn from their elders how to survive in the forest – what to eat, where and how to find food and water, how to make tools, how to avoid predators, etc. – they cannot survive based on “instinct.” Captive chimps in
the US have been denied the opportunity to learn the skills needed to live independently. They are completely dependent on us for their survival.
The late Carole Noon, Ph.D, founded Save the Chimps in 1997 in response to the U.S. Air Force’s announcement that it would no longer conduct research on chimpanzees. Outraged over the treatment and conditions that these chimpanzees had endured, Dr. Noon sued the Air Force on behalf of the captive chimpanzees and gained permanent custody of twenty-one chimps. Her bold, courageous and humane actions were the genesis of Save the Chimps.
Envisioning bright sunshine and blue skies for the rescued chimpanzees, Dr. Noon and Co-Founder Jon Stryker of the Arcus Foundation, worked together to purchase 150
acres in Fort Pierce, Florida and designed a state-of-the-art chimpanzee sanctuary, including a three-acre island home, complete with hills, shelter, and climbing structures from the Air Force. This island home enabled the chimps to roam freely and make basic choices formerly denied to them.
Three months after the arrival of Save the Chimps’ first rescued chimpanzees, an unexpected event forever altered the scale and scope of the new organization. The Coulston Foundation––a biomedical research lab based in New Mexico with multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act––was going
bankrupt and offered to sell their laboratory land and buildings, as well as donate 266 chimpanzees to Save the Chimps. It was a pivotal moment for the sanctuary and a call to action that Noon and Stryker felt couldn’t be ignored. Thus began the single largest rescue effort ever on behalf of captive chimpanzees.
Save the Chimps took over the Coulston Foundation to become the largest privately funded chimpanzee sanctuary in the U.S. Save the Chimps modified the lab into a healthier and happier environment for the chimpanzees and started what would later be referred to as the “Great
Chimpanzee Migration”; the nine-year process of moving those 266 chimps from the lab to new island homes in sunny Florida. On December 14, 2011, the Great Chimpanzee Migration was completed as the final group of Coulston chimps were released onto their new island home.
Now that these animals are safe at Save the Chimps, how is their day to day life?
The chimps live in large family groups on 12 separate 3-acre islands, most of our residents lived alone in small confined cages for decades. The islands give the chimps’ choices and control over their own lives, something many of our residents had
never experienced. An enriched outdoor environment allows the chimps to roam, visit with friends, bask in the sun, or curl up in the shade. This freedom provides them with the dignified and peaceful retirement they have always deserved.
The most important gift the chimpanzees have is each other. In the wild, chimpanzee communities may range in size from 15 to 120 chimps of both sexes and all ages. In their former lives as research subjects, pets, and entertainers, many of the chimps lived alone. These chimpanzees are now getting a second chance at life. They live in large
family groups of up to 26 members and are learning how to play, laugh, and groom – all natural behaviors for chimpanzees.
Chimps Love to Eat! They are opportunistic feeders, meaning they consume fruit and vegetables that are ripe and available during different times of the year. Save the Chimps is able to obtain nutritious food items year-round to provide three balanced meals per day. You always know when it’s time to eat, as meals are met with loud, happy vocalizations from the chimps!
Save the Chimps is also trying to reinvigorate the chimps by making their retirement the best it can. Many of the chimpanzees in their care endured years of a barren and lonely existence. Save the Chimps
is committed to providing the chimpanzees with the best retirement possible. In the wild, chimpanzees must navigate a complex physical and social environment in order to survive. Nature has equipped chimpanzees with a big brains and powerful bodies to handle all of the challenges they might encounter. In captivity, however, it can be challenging to provide all that chimpanzees need to keep their minds and bodies active. They may grow bored and develop abnormal behaviors. Enrichment encourages captive chimpanzees to be active and problem solve. Enrichment also provides variety, choice, comfort, and fun for the chimpanzees. The result is happier and more active chimpanzees.
The chimps receive top notch medical care. This includes preventative health screenings including echocardiograms, ultrasounds, radiographs and bloodwork to find and treat medical problems early in the course of a disease. It also means treating acute problems when they occur. Our veterinarians, consulting specialists, technicians, and a community of volunteer medical doctors guarantee that the chimpanzees’ health issues are addressed with the latest diagnostics and best medicine available.
At Save the Chimps, any chimpanzee who is temporarily or permanently unable to live in one of our 12 large chimpanzee families is considered to have special needs. Some chimpanzees with special needs have a difficult time getting along with other chimps and others have medical conditions that could be exacerbated by living with a large group of chimpanzees. Some of these chimps live in
the Special Needs facility, and others “timeshare” an island with a larger social group.
How can we, the human population help these remarkable creatures? You can "join their family." Your donation will help provide quality care to the beloved chimpanzee residents including fresh and nutritious meals, exceptional veterinary care, innovative enrichment, and the social companionship necessary for the chimps to live happy and full lives.
Save the Chimps is not open to the public to help ensure a peaceful retirement for the residents. Members of the Caregiver Society are invited once a year to the sanctuary through an annual event or prearranged appointment.
