A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

As the brainstorming sessions began for the article content of this issue, I realized that this issue focuses on so many women right here in our local community that represent strength, determination, creativity, and leadership. It just so happens that the spring and summer months of March and August are celebration months of women, including International Women’s Day in March as well as both Women Empowerment and Women Equality Day’s in August.

Today, more than ever, women are pushing all limits. With 42 percent of businesses today being owned by women, and for the first time in the Fortune 500 history, more than 10% of the CEO’s leading Fortune 500 companies are women. So many of the world’s luxury fashion brands, popular makeup, and skincare lines are the creative forces behind the brands.

Women have a unique ability to bond together as a force to support one another. Bringing people together and creating a network or an alliance if you will to encourage and support growth of one another. It is a special gift, and the movement of supporting women has proven success in the statistics and progress made in the world.

Personally, I often sit and think of the women that I have in my life that I am lucky enough to call friends and all of the women that I have met through my life journey’s and I can’t help but to be proud. Proud to know so many accomplished women, proud to have the opportunity to continue to meet new friends that are doing amazing things in the community, and proud to be a woman in today’s world.

What woman inspires you? For me, it is Coco Chanel. Like most women, I have a personal obsession with fashion, and Chanel is my absolute favorite clothing designer. What woman doesn’t love Chanel, right? Aside from the beauty and the quality of the Chanel collections, the fact that she’s a fellow Leolover of lions; it is the woman that Coco Chanel was that I appreciate the most. She broke all of the rules in fashion and society for women with a mindset of creating fashion freedom for women. She remains an inspiration for all women and is quite possibly the most influential fashion designer of all time.

I hope that you enjoy this issue that spotlights so many inspirational, contributors to our communities.

Spring is here, and now is the perfect time to visit our local gardens and enjoy the outdoors. From Indian River to Palm Beach county, we have three must-see gardens to tour this season.

Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens

2410 SE Westmoreland Blvd, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952

Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens is an expansive site located in the heart of Port St. Lucie. It is managed and operated by Friends of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, Inc., a non-profit 501(c) (3) public charity organization, that was founded to help support the daily operations of The Gardens. It is divided into varying sections, all themed around a particular habitat and the plants that would reside there. These scenes are connected by flowing trails so you can seamlessly go from the woodsy orchid room over to the striking cactus and succulent garden and on to all the other amazing scenes that the garden houses.

In addition to the beautiful garden spaces, the site also boasts a lake with a fountain, a pavilion, a gift shop, and an array of areas both inside and out for weddings, meetings, receptions, and a host of other events. So no matter if you want to visit to check out some local flora, host an event, or enjoy the serene quiet that only a botanical garden can provide, Port St. Lucie Botanical Garden is the place to go in St. Lucie County. Florida's first all-native botanical garden was established in 1994 by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. Pan's Garden takes its name from the bronze statue of Pan of Rohallion that graces the garden's entrance pool.

Designed by Frederick MacMonnies in 1890, the statue depicts Pan – the ancient god of shepherds who protects and guards the flocks – in idealized human form, playing his enchanted pipe of reeds. It is a fitting name and symbol for a garden that serves to protect and showcase Florida's indigenous plants and the wildlife they support. The half-acre garden consists of 236 species of Florida native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns, vines, and orchids. Half of those species are indigenous to the barrier island, and many of them are endangered. A significant feature of Pan's Garden is the Casa Apava wall fountain. The historic tile wall, which dates to the 1920s, was saved from the Casa Apava estate on South Ocean Boulevard and forms a dramatic backdrop for the western boundary of the garden. The Foundation offers interdisciplinary educational programs for grades K-12 during the school year.

The garden is open every day from 10 am - 4 pm. For more information about the garden, including volunteering and scheduling private tours, contact Susan Lerner, Director of Horticulture (561-832-0731 x113), or visit www.palmbeachpreservation.org/visit/ pans-garden.

Making waves through art.

Stuart-based artist, Jane Baldridge, expresses her love and passion for our Florida waterways through her art. Jane, also a boat captain, has sailed and lived by the sea most of her life, which is where her deep love for the ocean stems from. With the rich oceanic blue hues all Floridians know and love, paired with sweeping motion, it's not hard to feel like you are staring at the ocean when you look at her art. Much like the water she paints, she and her work are always on the move. She has exhibited her eye-catching paintings in many galleries across Martin and Palm Beach County. Her most recent body of work is a series of abstract seascape paintings called Oceana Phenomena. This collection is comprised of 3-dimensional human forms, covered in recycled charts specific to areas at risk of inundation, and painted to show the water rising up their bodies. Oceana Phenomena is all about ocean conservation, most notably the rising sea levels and declining water quality issues affecting our oceans. Jane uses her art as a way to reach the public heartstrings in a way that graphs and data do not. She says about this work, "We are late to address this problem, and we need to approach it from every angle. This is a dynamic project to meet the needs of the ever-growing problem." Oceana Phenomea has been shown at The Box Gallery in West Palm Beach, The Elliott Museum in Stuart, the Annapolis Maritime Museum, The Studios of Key West and most recently, at the The Palm Beach Design Showroom in Lake Worth. You can learn more about Jane and her work by visiting Artspeaks.com.

When your kitchen space is clutter free, thoughtful, and functional you'll enjoy being in it just a little bit more, and the heart of the home will feel just as it should - healthy and loved.

Most of us follow the basic rules for spring cleaning: mop, wipe, dust, and attempt to rid your home of clutter each year. These are all important facets of spring cleaning, but setting up a successful organizational approach in any space can eradicate the need for an overwhelming spring cleaning project. The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home. It is typically the busiest area in a house, the hub for everything from food prep and meals to after school homework sessions, and holiday entertaining. It's an area that can get messy before you know it, and the space people want to look most presentable and tidy when hosting.

This can often make spring cleaning your kitchen a very daunting task every year, and why it is important to think about establishing sustainable organizational systems all year long, so a spring time session doesn’t have to be such a chore.

Here are some professional tips on how to tackle organizing your kitchen so it becomes less of a burden and more of a breeze:

15 | SPRING/SUMMER EDITION

SPACE PLAN:

Make sure any space is being utilized to its fullest potential. Optimize all storage opportunities, from additional shelving in a pantry, hooks under a sink cabinet for damp dish towels or cleaning supplies, adding floating shelves above a bar-sink, or vertical storage for baking trays and large serving platters.

CLEAR CLUTTER:

Have an appointed “drop zone” or drawer for household items, donate duplicates, or any gadgets and appliances. One must make an effort to keep keys, technology, junk mail, and other common clutter culprits off your valuable cooking space!

DESIGNATE A SPACE FOR EVERYTHING:

Utilizing bins, baskets, and canisters helps create categories and group loose items together. Other items like turntables, drawer dividers, or insets also help prevent messes and clutter in drawers and cabinets. Bins used to sort items by category make life simple and easy to find.

LABEL WHERE POSSIBLE:

Designated drawers for tools, dishes, dishtowels,

pots, and pans will help ensure things go back where they belong. Adding labels to bins, drawers, baskets, even your fridge, is a great way to help anyone who uses the kitchen a ton, keep items where they belong or returned to their rightful home.

“I often say labeling is like putting a bow on a gift.”

Dare to be different

What truly defines an interior design style is the uniqueness and ability to stand out from the rest, whether it’s modern, traditional, or the newest transitional design. Kirsten “Kiki” Norman has established her own personal style with her family’s new home located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Architectural Photographer: Tyler Sargent; Sargent Photo | Architectural Stylist: Joy Bennett Styling Coffee Table, Desk & Chairs: Christian Liaigre

Kiki, Founder of The Norman Design Group, was born and raised in Southeast Asia and Australia and has lived in a total of 8 countries throughout her life to date. After graduating from Boston College, she attained her interior design degree at Parsons School of Design in New York and then went on to work for hospitality design companies like Hirsch Bedner and Associates in Los Angeles, London and most recently Zürich, where her two daughters, Kaya and Kelly, were born.

Kiki married her husband, Australian entrepreneur and golf legend, Greg Norman aka The Shark and moved to Florida in 2010. She then started working with Greg, overseeing and designing his branded real estate in places like Mexico and Columbia. Her last major project was a two and a half year owner-build project of their estate on Jupiter Island, which they ultimately sold during COVID.

They also sold their beloved 7Lakes ranch in Colorado at the same time. When they found their new Palm Beach Gardens home, it reminded Kiki of time spent in Santa Barbara, California with its Montecito style architecture and giant trees. Kiki and Greg knew that this time they wanted to keep construction to a minimum on their new house. The new challenge she faced as a designer was combining the contents of their Jupiter Island coastal home and their western lodge. Her vision, therefore, was a California desert inspired interior.

Kiki defines her overall style as natural, barefoot elegance, an island style influenced by her Mother’s Filipina heritage and she always designs her personal projects with her husband in mind. “The house is for both of us after all!” she says. She therefore tends to stick to a bold yet neutral palette, with strong often masculine statements as a hallmark of her interior design.

When you walk into their home, you are met with a beautiful blend of styles that reflect all the different journeys of their lives, showcasing exceptional designer brands such as Christian Liaigre, Ralph Lauren, and James Perse, a perfect background to tell the story of their life together, from their extensive travels to their growing family, all while exuding a warm place of peace and tranquility.

Kiki explains that she wanted this house to be more casual than their last, being mindful of all the teenagers who hang out there all weekend. She immediately thought of James Perse’s relaxed, California-cool surfer vibe, a perfect fit for her ex-surfer husband and their family’s love of the ocean. She also thought of Richard Hallberg, whose authentic California design aesthetic has always inspired her and because it is beautifully understated. She carefully planned the home around their furniture

but also with the intent to make each room usable. Kiki encourages her clients to think outside of the box when it comes to space planning. For example, she converted their normally-unusable entry foyer into a lounge with oversized club chairs and drink tables. She also converted the formal living space into a statement bar, which greets guests upon arrival and is perfect for an entertaining lifestyle. The bar and the lounge together allows for an inclusive space that works for the whole family.

She also took the master bed off the wall and floated it in the center of the room to maximize the views of their huge resort-style pool. On the other side of the home is a dual-purpose dining room that can be used as a formal dining space or a library that has a full display of her husband’s many trophies. She converted their guest house to a gym, which is now used daily by all family members.

Kiki stands by the belief that your home should reflect the way you like to live and who you are. "Tell a story while making every room a visual treat. Personal touches will bring warmth to your home. Focus on view corridors and displays to create impact. Think about your guest as well as your family and create spaces that are comfortable and inviting."

Kiki Norman design is guaranteed to be eternally chic, irresistibly inviting, and creatively inspiring.

BEHIND THE SYRINGE

Meet Kiera DiCicco, local blonde bombshell & boss babe, making women beautiful one syringe at a time!

THE

Every girl dreams of having their own sprawling pink princess castle. Well, local business owner Kiera DiCicco made her dream a reality! Instead of tiaras, ball gowns, and glass slippers, this castle is full of state-of-the-art aesthetic equipment, the latest fashions, and the dream beauty team!

CDM: Congratulations on your new location! This is quite the expansion from your first building located in Downtown Stuart.

KD: Thank you! Yes, we went from 1,500 square feet to 10,000 square feet!

CDM: What was your vision for your new building and expansion?

KD: I wanted to bring something to Martin County that hasn’t been done before. Something unique and next-level that makes everyone feel special when they walk in the door. The ultimate beauty lounge with everything to make a woman feel beautiful in one spot.

CDM: When did you decide you wanted to be in the medical field?

KD: I graduated from nursing school at UNC Chapel Hill in 2009. I immediately began to pursue a career in anesthesiology and became a CRNA in 2016. After starting my own anesthesiology group, I began to pursue my passion for aesthetics in 2018. Since then, my aesthetics career has grown and expanded.

31 | SPRING/SUMMER EDITION

CDM: What do you love most about what you do?

KD: I love making people feel more confident. Aesthetics has pulled out the artistic side of me that I never knew I had. This industry has given me the ability to make anything possible for what a woman might want to improve about themselves. I also love the challenge of successfully waking somebody up after surgery, knowing they feel good.

CDM: What have you seen as far as changes/ trends in the aesthetics industry?

KD:  Aesthetics has become much more popular and easy to talk about. Women used to hide it and be ashamed of getting procedures done, but now it is all they want to talk about amongst their friends. New lasers and threading techniques are really popular right now. There’s new technology always coming out, so we have to keep up with the current trends and training to be able to offer the latest procedures to the clients.

CDM: You have become quite known for your work, specifically with lip fillers. Do you have a signature look when you do lips?

KD: I love to keep the border crispy and the bottom lip pouty. I also don’t want everyone’s lips to look the same, so I genuinely try to keep the patient’s natural anatomy in mind with my final result. My motto is “up, not out.”

CDM: What makes Albany unique?

KD: Albany encompasses everything a person needs to feel beautiful from the inside out. From a surgery center that can help assist with complicated needs, to a beautiful lip enhancement, all the way to the final touch of what they wear. It’s the full beauty treatment inside out!

CDM: You also have a location in Vero. How did you choose that area to expand to?

KD: We have hundreds of clients that travel from all over the state, but a large majority come from the Vero Beach area. I wanted to provide a location closer to them so they could refer their friends and family.

CDM: In addition to your 2 locations of Albany Aesthetics, you also have Beauty Sleep Anesthesia Surgical Center. Can you tell us more about this center?

KD: I have owned Beauty Sleep Anesthesia since 2017. We cover plastic surgery and pain centers. We are proud to be an all-CRNA group! Currently, we have about 16 nurse anesthesiologists that take pride in specializing in office-based surgery. The surgery center at Albany Aesthetics brings my passions, Anesthesiology and Aesthetics, to one place and creates a space where I can refer my patients and see their treatment through the entire process. We will be primarily offering plastic surgery so that we can offer this to our patients when they have concerns that aesthetics may not cover.

CDM: Another exciting addition to the Albany brand is Albany Boutique! What inspired you to add a boutique?

KD: I have been into fashion since I can remember, and I wanted to capture another part of being a woman that makes her feel beautiful. Most of our styles are feminine, flowy styles and beautiful floral prints. We have high-end brands like LoveShackFancy, Hemant & Nandita, and much more! I

wanted to bring these brands to Stuart so that our customers don’t have to travel out of town or shop online to shop for these styles and brands.

CDM: You have opened a newly expanded main location, a second location, plus a new Boutique. It has been a very busy year for you ... and you’re a mom too! How in the world do you manage this all and have balance in your family life?   KD: Wine! Haha! Just kidding. My family and my faith give me such strength and determination. My family has always been so supportive and my biggest cheerleaders. I couldn’t do it without them. They allow me to take the time I need to grow and work hard, and they always understand if I have a late night or extra work to bring home. My husband is my rock! He keeps my head on my shoulders, tells me when I can improve on things, and gives me sound advice when I ask. And, of course, my amazing team! They give me peace of mind while I am away that things are being done how I would want them done. I haven’t always had that in the past, and I truly feel that I have my dream team that I can trust! Albany keeps me alive and thriving; I absolutely love it!

33 | SPRING/SUMMER EDITION

CDM: You have a daughter that just turned three. And you are expecting your second daughter in May. Congratulations! Can you share a little bit about your journey conceiving your second child?

KD: I have a genetic disorder called muscular dystrophy. With my pregnancy while carrying my daughter, it exacerbated all of my symptoms, and I had complications after her birth. We knew that we wanted more children, so we had to explore other options that would be safer and healthier. We chose to do in vitro fertilization (IVF) so that I did not pass this on to my children. We also decided to use a surrogate to prevent further breakdown of my muscles so that I can be a strong and healthy mom for my children. The surrogate that we have chosen has given me total peace of mind, and it has been such a wonderful experience. She lives in Iowa and has four children of her own. Our new baby girl is due in May, and we couldn’t be more excited to meet her and expand our family!

CDM: You are a young woman that juggles running a very successful business with multiple divisions and locations, all while being a wife, a mom, and a mom-to-be. Do you have any advice for other women out there that struggle with balance?

KD: Taking time to have fun is huge! I work hard, but I play hard as well. It allows me to have a mental break, so I’m ready to take on the next challenge.

CDM: Do you have any advice for young girls that aspire to be in your position one day?

KD: Focus, make a goal, and don’t let life get in the way. There are lots of excuses that can come up along the way, but as long as you stay focused on your end goal, you can do it! Don’t let others tell you it is too hard or find an easier way.

"Make your own path, follow it, and anything is possible."

WHAT IS STRESS COSTING YOU?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. To recognize this important topic, Matt Cardone, corporate wellness professional and author, gives us insight on mental health and how to manage stress through meditation and mindfulness.

The world around us has changed, and with that, there has been an unprecedented increase in the amount of mental health cases. As a society, we are feeling the stress, and studies have shown that cases are on the rise day after day. Although people are being pushed to practice selfcare and seek help if they need it, at the end of the day, it all boils down to how committed you are to keeping your mind clean. That's why it's necessary to spare time to sit with your thoughts and actively eliminate those that are bogging you down; find out where your negative feelings stem from and nip them in the bud. Meditation, as a practice, is all about reprogramming the mind and teaching it to let go of things that do not matter at the end of

the day. It allows you to look at the larger picture of life and shift focus to the things worth thinking about. This, in turn, leads to better time management and decision-making. Now the question to ask yourself is, what is stress costing you? Stress can be this catch-all phrase that can often be used flippantly, "My boss stresses me out" or "my kids are stressing me out." When we bring it back to the basic understanding by breaking down the definition, we can become clearer on the subject. Stress is an abnormality or strain at the structural or material level. Indicating that we store stresses directly in the body. Anytime we are unable to adapt to a demand in a real-time circumstance, we incur stress, and it gets stored in the body as data. Chronic stress

63 | SPRING/SUMMER EDITION

is never thrilling and never exciting. It eats away at you every day, year after year, and it can be tremendously destructive. Chronic stress occurs when a person is in a repetitively stressful environment and cannot adapt to the demands at that time.

Enter Rest. Rest is the antidote to stress. It is the body's natural way of repairing, releasing, and restoring order in the nervous system. 1 in 3 Americans are not sleeping effectively and efficiently the way the body was designed to sleep (CDC website). Essentially, we are walking, talking pressure cookers of stress with no release outlet. Studies indicate that mental techniques of meditation provide rest that is up to 5x deeper, minute for minute, than in our deepest states of sleep. Now to fully understand the mechanics of how this works, let us break down the two major components, the mind, and the body. Studies indicate that the human mind has between 50,000-70,000 thoughts every single day, and in fact, around 90% of those are recurring or repetitive thoughts that we ruminate on over and over again. Now the nature of the mind is to think, and it works on the principle of traction. It is always either being attracted to something or distracted. The mind is attracted to certain mates you may choose, books you like to read, or the type of movies you enjoy. Distraction is the same but opposite, but either way, it's traction. In meditation, the mind moves naturally with this traction and creates a unique connection with the body. We call this psychosomatic. In relation to the physical, think of a time when you were getting ready for a first date or job interview,

and maybe you noticed a lot of activity in the body (i.e., cracking knuckles or biting fingernails). Busy mind, busy body. Anxious mind, anxious body. The body is a direct printout of the mind.

Now, in meditation, it works the same but opposite. This technique brings the mind from the busy surface down to more quiet, subtle layers of thinking. As the mind quiets and settles, the body follows suit and now can achieve a profound state of deep healing rest. This will begin to release the stresses stored in the body, almost like closing out hundreds of open tabs on the computer. This activity brings the body back up to the busy surface and, along with it, the mind. Now the mind is doing the best that it knows how to, as it labels thoughts. That is why thoughts are good in meditation because it's evidence of stress being released from the nervous system. What you do with those thoughts is what I teach on a much deeper level when working with students in any of my programs.

Palm Beaches best kept secret.

Clandestine is not a restaurant; it is a dining experience, an experience that will take you on a journey through tastes, textures, and scents that is wholly unique. The menu, which changes each month, showcases a broad horizon of flavors, local ingredients, and innovative culinary techniques. The mind behind the menu is Executive Chef Emerson Frisbie. Chef Frisbie has trained in many of Northwestern Connecticut's most celebrated restaurants, including Le Petite Sirah, The Mayflower Inn, Arethusa Al Tavolo, & Community Table. He relocated to Palm Beach in 2015 and has worked in some of the area's finest dining establishments. Alongside him is Sous Chef Brittany Koga, whose broad culinary experience and techniques are the perfect match for Chef Frisbie's vision. Clandestine sets itself apart not only with its stellar menu but an intimate dining experience that is rarely seen. Warm, comforting lighting, limited seating, and pleasant conversation around each course all lend itself to this intimate environment that we were delighted by. Diners have the option to add wine pairings to each course, and we highly suggest you do. Sommelier Brett Hart expertly pairs each course with a curated wine selection that elevates and uplifts the dish's flavor profile. CDM was lucky enough to sit down with Chef Frisbie and Sous Chef Brittany to chat about all things Clandestine. When asked about the inspiration for Clandestine, Chef Frisbie explained “ I wanted to create a memorable dining experience that pushed the culinary borders while telling a story through food." Let's talk food: We aren't exaggerating when we say that every course was so delicious it was nearly impossible to pick our favorites, but these are the dishes we will be dreaming about.

The Fort Steakhouse

3750 NE Indian River Dr, Jensen Beach, FL 34957

elected “Best Restaurant on the Treasure Coast” for 2021, 2022, and 2023 by Indian River Magazine, and one of my favorite local steakhouses, The Fort Steakhouse, is a musttry. Located in historic downtown Fort Pierce, across from the Sunrise Theater, The Fort is an excellent place for a nice dinner, especially before or after a show. This modern-style steakhouse serves some of the best premium cuts of beef sourced from ranches all over the state of Florida, including Adams Ranch, located right in Fort Pierce. They also feature a great selection of pork, poultry, fresh seafood, and a wide variety of delicious salads and sides!

Their dining room has a modern, high-end steakhouse feel. The impressive chandeliers made from hanging wine bottles molded together create an ambiance that’s romantic and intimate. The walls are decorated with murals of eye-catching cowboy

pop art, as well as actual framed photographs from Adam’s Ranch. They have a long wooden bar where the bartenders whip up some excellent specialty cocktails. My favorite is the Smokey Ontario (think Old Fashioned), but the Ginger Collins and the El Verano are great options if you like gin or vodka. The wine and spirit menu is abundant, so you won’t have trouble finding the perfect pairing to go with your steak.

For an appetizer, I highly recommend the Grilled Bone Marrow, Escargot, or the Dirty Oysters. But let’s face it; you go here to order one of their prime steaks or chops, which are served a la carte. The Delmonico is the most flavorful steak on the menu and a favorite of mine. The NY Strip and Filet Mignon are fantastic as well. There’s also an array of table sauces you can add to any steak, like Au Poivre, Gorgonzola Fondue, or their House Made Steak Sauce. If a pork chop is more your style, the White Marble Farms Double Bone-in Pork Chop is a must-have. I’ll be honest I had my doubts because a pork chop is hard to do well, but this pork chop was tender, juicy, and flavorful—one of the best I’ve had at any restaurant.

Kaishin Sushi

3750 NE Indian River Dr, Jensen Beach, FL 34957

Ivisited a true hidden gem in Jensen Beach serving the highest quality and most authentic sushi, Kaishin Sushi. Often, when we think of sushi, we think of the "Americanized" jumbo-style rolls with several ingredients, but this is not authentic sushi. The chef and owner of Kaishin (which means satisfaction in Japanese) is originally from Japan and takes great pride in his quality and the true art of sushi. Rice quality is often overlooked when eating sushi. However, it is the main ingredient in sushi other than the fish itself. The texture, size, and shape all play an important role. Kaishin has the best quality rice and freshest fish.

You will not find a website or Instagram for Kaishin, but I will tell you it is worth a trip. I highly suggest getting one of their sushi/sashimi samplers and asking if they have any special fish not listed on the menu. They also offer a variety of warm and cold small plates and have a good selection of sake.

You won't find any jumbo rolls here, but there are several rolls to choose from, with my favorite being the BR Special: Shrimp Tempura, avocado, cream cheese, & topped with charbroiled eel. Another one of my favorites is the Kaishin Carpaccio, in which you pick your fish, and it is served topped with masago, scallions, and covered in yuzu pepper vinaigrette. I hope you will check out this amazing restaurant in Jensen beach and try some of these dishes!

Born and raised in Martin County, I’ve always loved where I live, but it wasn’t until I returned home from college that I began to appreciate all of the fantastic food options in and around Stuart. After college, I quickly obtained my real estate license and found myself going out for lunch and dinner with clients quite often. Many of these individuals were from out of town, so they would ask me to choose a location. This allowed me to show off Stuart’s many family-owned and operated restaurants serving high-quality, delicious food. From waterfront dining, fine dining, casual eateries, boutique coffee shops, sushi, and breakfast and brunch spots, Stuart offers dozens of great dining experiences for every pallet and budget. When asked to select a few of my favorites, it was challenging. In addition to the food itself, I believe the entire dining experience, from the service, quality, and value, all play an essential part. These are just a few of my favorite spots that I visit regularly.

The bar team knows their regulars by name, while they invite guests to join as they wait for their tables, shaking up libations and good times. The white linen dining room provides a level of sophistication paired with a warm Italian welcome. Some of their dishes, along with a more global menu, can be found just down the street at their sister restaurant, Barcello.

Step aside Tennis! Pickleball is the new kid in town.

We sat down with pickleball professional, Marc Baldinger, to get the scoop on this new, fun sport and see why everyone is in love with pickleball. We also got a lesson and some pro tips on how to up our pickleball game.

Marc has played more than four decades of competitive tennis and is taking that experience, energy, and passion to pickleball. He got his start playing six years ago as an activity to do with his wife and hasn't looked back. He quickly picked up on the game, and after only one year, he joined in his first tournament and won his second! After his first win, they kept rolling in. Mark has won medals at tournaments all around Florida and even qualified for the state senior games and placed fourth. Marc then became a sponsored player for Engaged Pickleball, one of the sport's largest equipment manufacturers, and now serves on the company's advisory board. Following these outstanding achievements, Admirals Cove asked Marc to be their newest pickleball instructor, and he has been instructing for three years.

Pickleball has taken South Florida by storm and continues to grow in popularity. Through his passion for the game of pickleball and his training efforts, Marc has had a hand in cultivating locals' love for this budding sport. Now to answer the question we are all asking. Why is pickleball so popular? Marc explained that in addition to it being an enjoyable sport to play, pickleball is easy to learn, is great exercise, and is a lower impact compared to other sports. While trying to learn another sport, it can take months or years to get the hang of it, but pickleball can be picked up and played proficiently

in a matter of a few games. In addition, pickleball is a slower-paced sport compared to its counterpart, tennis, and is easier to navigate thanks to the smaller court size. You can fit four pickleball courts into one tennis court! All these factors set the stage for pickleball to become beloved across the country.

75 | SPRING/SUMMER EDITION LIFESTYLE + HOME | HEALTH & FITNESS

How do you play pickleball? Marc shared some of the basic pickleball rules to get you started before you even step foot on the court.

Stay out of the kitchen: The area between the net and the non-volley line is called the kitchen or the non-volley zone. You cannot step in the kitchen and hit the ball, so remember, stay out of the kitchen!

Let it bounce: when the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and the serving team must let it bounce before returning (a.k.a. The one bounce rule).

Stay right: the first serve for each side starts on the right-hand side of the court.

Just keep serving: the server keeps the serve until the serving team loses the rally.

Aim for +2: Most games are played up until 11 points (sometimes 15), and you must win by two. Now you are ready to get out there and play!

Marc's top tips for pickleball perfection!

1.

Get to the line as quick as possible! 70% of the shots are hit right at the line.

2.

Keep the paddle up! You want to be ready at all times.

3.

Consistency! You want to keep the ball in play and moving for the duration of the game.

Local woman conquers one of the most challenging sports under the waves.

oday we're discussing my take on spearfishing as a woman; how it's different and how it's not. My name is Cheyenne Lee Behrsin, and I am a 5th generation Floridian, meaning I come from a long line of salty commercial fishermen, three generations to be exact.

I love everything to do with being outdoors, especially on the ocean. I have been a team Salt Life member for almost six years and am most passionate about becoming a role model for women in the outdoors. I aspire to motivate them to be authentic and intrigued about adventuring into the water/woods and connecting with themselves, God, and nature. I believe a lot of my passion is generational and was instilled by my parents and theirs before. From a very young age (probably around four), my parents and family members taught me

how to fish and how to catch lobster and spearfish. I still remember every first experience I've had on the water and many that have followed after. Over the years, I have set and broken six women's world record titles for spearfishing on both pole spear and speargun. I'll never forget my first record fish and the fire it ignited in me. Up until that day, I had no idea about World Records and the ability to set and break them. I remember the feeling of gaining respect and recognition in the sport, which had been long chased after keeping up with a family and community of primarily men. In order to submit a World Record, you must be freediving and do everything on your own. Whether you're a man or woman, it's a feat like no other! I mean, you are wrestling the biggest fish of that species ever to be landed on the boat; by yourself!

77 | SPRING/SUMMER EDITION
LIFESTYLE + HOME | HEALTH & FITNESS
Article by: Cheyenne Lee Behrsin Photo by: Chris Taverra

I didn't get to that point of ability without many long days on the water, endless harsh criticism, and a ton of crazy moments. The point is, it's a challenging sport, and you have to not only be able to, but you have to want to hold your own out there. One of the best ways to develop that is tournament diving. The rush of trying to be the quietest and quickest to slip into the water, hunt your fish, and reload for another builds some serious situational awareness and skill both in the water and on the boat. Some of the record fish I've shot have even been speared in tournaments. I'm an extremely competitive person by nature and thrive under the pressure of outshooting my opponents; because of this, I end up hunting some of my best fish during these events. Granted, I don't always win the tournament using big game fish tactics, but I have won quite a few. One of my favorite memories of all time took place while spearfishing, believe it or not, I didn't shoot a thing! In fact, I put my pole spear back in the boat! Last summer, while on our annual family spearing trip in the Bahamas, we came across a pod of wild dolphins. Eleven of my family members and I were surrounded by about 8-12 spotted and bottlenose dolphins that wanted nothing more than to spend the next hour and a half playing with us. To say the experience was out of this world is an extreme understatement; never in my life have I experienced such a raw and real interaction between a human and a wild animal. I'm a firm believer that in order to have beautiful experiences, you have to venture out and find them. I've been blessed with a lifetime of incredible experiences in and on the water, and I'm blessed to be sharing them with you right now. I am deeply passionate about becoming a role model for women, motivating them to be authentic and passionate about being on the water or in the woods and connecting with themselves, God, and nature. I want to encourage girls and women of all ages to give freediving and spearfishing a try. It is always recommended to get freedive level 1 certified before spearfishing to learn proper safety practices and procedures, as this is and can be a dangerous sport.

So what is spearfishing from my perspective? Whoever you are, there is a place for you in the sport, and knowing how to navigate scenarios that arise can be helpful to you in the long run. Educating yourself and doing your own research and due diligence on safety procedures and licensing rules/ regulations is advised. You will have ups, downs, and frustrations along the way, but it does get easier with practice! Get in touch with the community by talking to your local dive shop or online support group, and go have some fun! Remember, not every trip has to be successful. There are many days that I go out and don't catch or shoot anything, but I still have memories and experiences to go home with that will last a lifetime. Join me on my adventures under the sea on Instagram @cheyenneleebehrsin.

WAVES OF HOPE IN MARTIN COUNTY

Catch the Wave of Hope (CTWH) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit that fights to end human trafficking through education, prevention, restoration, and legislation. Founded by local artist Lynne Barletta, the driving force behind establishing the foundation started two years before. In 2015 she was asked to participate in an art event in Singapore to help raise funds for a safe home for trafficked and abused girls called Dayspring. Lynne painted an 8-foot anamorphic wave that was used as a fundraiser. She worked with children from various nations to help create a block-long mural for the project, and an 18-year-old girl worked by Lynne's side during the duration of the art project. Sadly this girl had been trafficked by her parents since age 8; Lynne was grateful to be able to help victims like that girl and was driven to continue working for this cause. A year later, she was then contacted by the President of the Women's Club of Stuart to help raise money to help trafficked victims by painting a mural in Stuart Florida. That mural was painted in 2016 on the ATT building in downtown Stuart. With the help of teachers, local artists, and students ages 5 to 17, the mural's creation was and continues to be a very successful fundraiser while also beautifying our coastal community. The mural was covered nationwide on television newscasts, which helped start the wave of awareness concerning sex trafficking. Then in 2017, Catch the Wave of Hope was born and received non-profit status. Its mission is to be a public voice and defender of sexually trafficked

children and has a laser focus on taking a stance against this heinous crime that infiltrates our community on every level through awareness, education, legislation, and restoration.

Since July 2020, Catch the Wave of Hope has offered mental health therapy to victims/survivors of human trafficking. A referral form can be found on its website. Both individual and family therapy are offered by a mental health clinician who is specifically trained in treating (complex) trauma and has experience working with this population.

Over the last several years, Sarah Marie Henry, Executive Director of CTWH, has educated and trained multiple community groups and personnel on human trafficking. Included are Martin County School District Nurses, Martin County Health Department, Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis of Stuart, local law enforcement groups, foster parent support groups, and over 100 parents and families affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County; additionally, the CTWH anti-sex trafficking curriculum has been used in the Okeechobee and Martin County School Districts. The educational piece in the schools helps fulfill a Florida mandate that all middle and high school students should receive a human trafficking awareness training, which is incredibly vital to combat this issue.

Recently, they have announced their strategic partnership with Operation Underground Railroad. The two organizations will team up together on efforts to keep children safe and to continue driving awareness and education on child exploitation and child sex trafficking. Operation Underground Railroad was founded in 2013 and is recognized internationally as one of the major entities fighting human trafficking. The organization recently released a powerful documentary titled "It's Happening Right Here." which will be presented on the Treasure Coast by Catch the Wave of Hope in the spring of 2023 and will be available for viewing by the general public.

Catch the Wave of Hope collaborates with other service providers to fill gaps in services that are not currently available to survivors. They take a trauma-informed, survivor-centered approach to everything they do and build their organization based on feedback from the community and those they serve. To learn more, request training, or submit a therapy referral, contact Sarah Marie Henry at sarahmarie.henry@catchthewaveofhope.org and visit www.catchthewaveofhope.org.

Ibegan writing The Modern Hippie Table after my journey as a lifestyle blogger inspired a philosophy of empowering women, reinventing their passion for the home, and having fun in the kitchen.

Whether I am cooking with new flavors or setting the scene for a beautiful evening, my recipe for merging good food and gorgeous surroundings has always resulted in memorable conversations and lifelong memories. I currently live in south Florida with my architect husband, two teenage children, and our Shar Pei pup Simon.

The Modern hippie lifestyle is simple, nostalgic, and whimsical meets new, sophisticated, and casual. It's a way to slow down and create a sanctuary at home, using food and conversation to bring people together at the table and forge family bonds and lifelong friendships. With an array of suggested menus for easy meal planning, The Modern Hippie Table encourages everyone to find joy and ease in the art of cooking and entertaining for gatherings big and small. Okay, gentlemen, move over. Girls can grill too, and boy do we love to turn up the heat! I hope you will enjoy this delicious rib receipe from the "Girls Can Grill" section of my book.

Tender Crispy Barbecue Ribs

One of my mom’s secret recipes are these juicy-on-the inside, crispy-on-the-outside ribs. Many people throw raw ribs on the grill and they usually end up burning them in order to make sure the inside is fully cooked, but they never get tender that way. Our secret is that you slowly cook the ribs in the oven for hours first. Finish them off on the grill and they’ll have a juicy, fall-off-the-bone texture on the inside and a crispy barbecue sauce–flavored texture on the outside. Serves 4 to 6.

Recipe:

− 2 tablespoons garlic salt

− 2 tablespoons onion powder

− 2 tablespoons black pepper

− 2 large racks baby back ribs

− 1 (18-ounce ) bottle sweet barbecue sauce of your choice

− 1 (18-ounce) bottle spicy or smoky barbecue sauce of your choice

− Avocado or canola oil

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a small bowl, combine the garlic salt, onion powder, and black pepper and whisk until combined. Set aside.

Cover the bottom of a large baking sheet with foil and place the ribs on the sheet. Season both sides of the ribs with the seasoning mixture. With the meaty side of the ribs facing up, cover the pan with aluminum foil, running your fingers along the edge to make sure the foil is sealed tightly to allow the ribs to steam. Bake for 2 hours.

In a medium bowl, mix together both bottles of the barbecue sauce and set aside.

Remove the ribs from the oven, and carefully remove the top layer of foil, watching out for the steam as it escapes. Oil the grates of your grill to prevent your food from sticking. Turn the grill to medium-high. Paint one side of the ribs generously with the barbecue sauce mixture. Transfer the ribs to the hot grill with the sauce-side down. The ribs are already cooked through, so you’ll only need to sear them until they are crispy, 3 to 5 minutes.

While the ribs are searing on the grill, carefully paint the other side of the ribs with the sauce, flip them over, and sear for another 3 to 5 minutes. Paint with sauce again and repeat on each side two or three times, decreasing the amount of time they cook on each side by 1 minute, which will build a thicker and crispier layer of sauce. Remove the ribs from the grill, transfer them to a cutting board, and let cool for 5 minutes.

Using a sharp knife with a long narrow blade, cut the ribs apart. Transfer them to a serving platter and serve with the extra barbecue sauce on the side.
