Highland Stock Farms Annual Bull & Select Female Sale

Page 1

MARCH 15 | 2PM | BRAGG CREEK, AB annual BULL & SELECT FEMALE SALE 22nd

Welcome

FROM HIGHLAND STOCK FARMS

We at Highland Stock Farms sincerely invite all of you to our annual Bull & Select Female sale. We thank everyone who has helped us put on this event. It takes a real effort from friends and family.

We are very proud of the cattle we are offering and all of the cattle on offer have been parent verified. All the Limousin have been participants of the Limousin Forward project from Neogen and all have 100k profiles and are homozygous polled.

We have made the decision in the last few years to move our calving to December & January and as a result these bulls and females are more mature. The bulls can easily pass a semen test and breed more cows. I find they have much more drive than the typical two year old bull.

We would like to invite you to come and compare. The bulls are being fed again at Triple S RanchWest on Highway 1 in the Jumping Pound area and will be moved home to Bragg Creek on Thursday March 13th. The heifers are being fed here at home in Bragg Creek.

Looking forward to hosting you all on Saturday March 15th for Lunch at 12:30 and the Sale at 2:00pm.

Sincerely,

EMPHASIS ON HOMOZYGOUS POLLED We at Highland believe that the homozygous polled trait is the most important thing we can pass on to commercial cattlemen. If you use a homozygous polled bull, you will not have to deal with horns. We do not use the term double polled as all it means is that the parents are polled and the offspring have not been tested or they did not pass the homozygous test. We have only used homozygous bulls for several years and our goal is to have a homozygous polled herd of which we will be very close, as we only have one cow in our herd that is not homozygous polled and she is 13 years old.

PROUDLY RAISING ANGUS

1905 • CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF ANGUS

Highland’s Angus beginning started in 1905 when Rob’s great-grandfather F.R. (Frank) Cathro immigrated to Alberta from North Dakota bringing with him some of the first registered Angus cattle in Alberta. Rob’s other great-grandfather E.R. (Ernest) Matthews immigrated to Alberta from Nebraska in 1908 opening the Matthews Music House in downtown Calgary. Along with E.R. came his son Charles whom in time met and married Grace Cathro, F.R.’s daughter. When the depression hit in the 1930’s, the music business was suffering so Charles decided to diversify. In 1932 Charles bought land west of Calgary and founded Highland Stock Farms. He purchased Angus cattle from his father-in-law and over time built a herd of approximately 300 mother cows. In the fall of 1945 Charles’ son Don came home after serving in WW II to take over the operation of Highland. In 1970, Don’s son Rob came home to start taking over and has been highly involved since that time. Rob’s daughter Amanda along with her husband and sons are now taking the reins of Highland. F.R.(Frank) Cathro was the very first Secretary-Manager of the Alberta Angus Association. Both Charles and Don were Presidents of the Canadian Angus Association and both Don and Rob were Presidents of the Alberta Angus Association.

Amanda received the 100 year award on behalf of the family at Farmfair international presented by the Canadian Angus Association.

406M’s dam is a female we refer to as Bert, that was purchased from Golden Oak Livestock in their inaugural Cattle in the Snow sale. 406 was her first calf and we are very pleased with the type of female she is. Notethe strong EPDs.

It has been a pleasure working with the reputable Highland Stock Farms program. Highland Stock program is admired by many purebred and commercial cattlemen as they continue to present very strong and consistent purebred bull herds year after year. The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization, gut health and as a result quality sperm production. Nutritional status of a bull, particularly from the previous 60-days can affect the semen quality being ejaculated today. Sperm production is a continuous process and proper nutrition is critical to maintain peak fertility and longevity of bulls. Bull calves are generally developed on grass with their moms on a quality mineral program.

Once bull calves are weaned, they are slowly moved onto a balanced TMR. The bulls are challenged with a forage-based TMR to help them develop and express their genetic potential. This is important for consistency of maturation and puberty of bull calves. Sampling and analyzing forages are important for properly balancing the overall ration. Forage quality and digestibility are important for maximizing ruminal health. Matching suitable protein sources with proper starch with the available forage sources is key to promoting lean muscle growth. The addition of organic minerals are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health of bulls. All of these factors contribute to semen quality and conception within a herd.

If you have any questions about the nutrition program, please feel free to reach out. Buy with confidence knowing the bulls have been developed on a balanced nutrition program. Best of luck to Amanda and the Highland Stock Farms family on sale day!
