Walls of Aveiro

• In fact, from the ancient walls of Aveiro nothing visible

remains today . Some people say that in the rear of the Secondary School Homem Cristo, one can still find some ancient ruins. • The last walls were destroyed about a dozen years ago.

 The first document written about Aveiro salt pans predates the founding of the nation, even before the existence of Ria de Aveiro.  BUT…what used to be a prosperous economic

activity,

was

somehow

diminishing in recent years.  Nowadays, just a few salt pans remain.

 In the Eco-Museum of Troncalhada, one can learn much about the old salt extraction process.

ďƒ˜ Over the centuries, the instability of the bar (isolation from the sea) was a decisive factor in the

number of variation and production of salt, which is reflected in periods of decadence, interspersed with very favorable to production periods, as happened in 1572 in that, given the favorable situation in the status bar, the high and progressive commercial and maritime index, Aveiro became one of the best ports of Portugal, with a large increase in the marketing of

salt and cod fishing.

The Atlantic Ocean

Located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, Aveiro is an industrial city with an important seaport

By the end of the 16th century the canal that linked Aveiro to the ocean was closed due to a tremendous storm that destroyed the sea-shore and Aveiro decade for a number of years. In 1759 Aveiro finally received the qualification of "city" and recovered both economically and culturally. During the 19th century two major improvements were made: the railway arrived to Aveiro and the harbour was re-qualified and the connection to the ocean improved.
