1. Print out the template on page 8. Cut across the grey line. Insert the template inside a cotton bag so the bottom edge sits flush along the bottom seam of the bag. Position the template so it is centred. Trace the template design onto the bag using a pencil.
3. Paint the petals of the flower using yellow fabric paint. Add orange paint along the centre outline and blend into the yellow of the petals. Add more yellow paint if needed to help you blend the colours. Allow to dry.
6. Use a small brush to outline the petals in black paint. Alternatively, you can use a permanent marker. You can also add extra details to the petals if you wish. Allow to dry.
2. Remove the template and place a sheet of scrap paper inside the bag. Ensure the sheet of paper is large enough to cover the area you will be painting. This will ensure the paint doesn’t bleed through to the other side of the bag.
4. Mix equal parts of green and red paint to create dark brown. Paint the centre of the flower. Allow to dry.
7. Write a nice message above the sunflower using fabric paint. Allow to dry. Remove the scrap paper from the bag.

5. Add yellow paint to your brown mixture to create light brown. Apply the mixture on thick using a dabbing motion to add texture to the centre. Allow to dry.
8. To heat set your design, run a hot iron over the back of the bag for 4-5 minutes. Alternatively, you can place your bag in a tumble dryer on a hot setting. Your Sunflower Tote Bag is now ready to gift for Mother’s Day!

6. Use a back stitch and your chosen colours of embroidery thread to stitch around your design. Tie a knot to secure and trim the excess. Ensure you have left a tail to help with tying the knot!
2. Choose a colour of felt and place the template pieces onto the sheet. Trace around the ears and cut out.
4. Click here to see how to sew a back stitch. Back stitch the left ear piece onto the top left of the slipper. Tie a knot to secure and trim the excess. Repeat with the other ear on the right.
7. To create a solid shape, create a border around the shape using a back stitch. Create back stitches side by side to fill in the shape. Tie a knot to secure and trim the excess. We used this method to create the eyes and nose.
Why not create one of each design to mix and match?
5. Sketch a face onto the top of the slipper. You can be as creative as you like or you can use our design for inspiration!

• Flower Beads – 100g Pack – 21018
• Heishi Bead Box – 20709
• EC Spaghetti String – Pink – 60 Metres – 17612
• Embroidery Thread – Pink – 48m – 12378
• Other materials required: Scissors and a ruler.
1. Cut three 40cm lengths of pink spaghetti string. Tie a knot 12.5cm in from one end on each length. This will stop your beads from falling off and leave you with a tail for tying at the end.
4. Thread the heishi bead pattern onto another length of string. Once you have enough beads to match the length of the flower beads, tie a knot to secure.
2. Choose a colour pattern of flower beads. Thread the pattern onto one of the spaghetti string lengths. We have used 16 flower beads. Tie a knot in the other end so the knot sits tight against the beads.
3. Choose a colour pattern of heishi beads. We have choosen to use three colours in a 5, 3, 5, 3 pattern.
7. Cut two 20cm lengths of pink embroidery thread. Tie one length to each end, between the beads and string knot.
5. Repeat steps 3-4 for the remaining string length. You can create the same pattern or choose different colours. Tie a knot to secure.
8. Create a sliding knot with the embroidery thread. The thread will help to create a smooth slide.
CleverTip: Click here to see how to create a sliding knot.
6. Align the beaded lengths together so the flower beads are in the middle. Tie the lengths together at each end.
