CRICKHOWELL’S CL ARENCE HALL NEWSLETTER & WHAT’S ON
Lunchtime recital
The Clarence Hall’s Lunchtime Recital Programme is a series of events designed to encourage live music performances in Crickhowell. In May, the sounds of singers from local community choir Cantorion Phoenix and musicians from Rusty Recorders resonated through the Hall in a shared programme of music.
Cantorion Phoenix, conducted by Musical Director, Dian Winter, delighted the audience with their choice of numbers from the musicals. We were also treated to a guest performance by Rusty Recorders, led by recorder specialist, Caroline Jones.
We are so grateful to everyone who sang and played with such talent and enthusiasm and for our very appreciative audience who popped in to enjoy the performance.
Here comes Summer!

Always at the heart of the community, the Clarence Hall is set for a busy Summer! We’re delighted to be hosting events that will showcase talent, both local and national.
These include: Limehouse Lizzy in Concert; a lunchtime recital with Crickhowell Community Band and local pianist, Lloyd Jeremiah; Theatre Workshop Monmouthshire’s production of Annie Jr; Crickhowell High School’s Sports Awards; Living with Dementia’s Elvis Comeback Special fundraiser; Dance Beats’ Summer Show; and Crickhowell Garden Show!
All this, alongside our regular Bingo evenings, Persian rug sales, ESOL classes, U3A meetings, Dance Beats classes and Cantorion Phoenix rehearsals.
Work is also continuing on the Hall’s redevelopment, with the focus on our new extension and accessible entrance now that the refurbishment of the kitchen and main toilet facilities is largely complete.

Working in partnership for the Community!
“The Big Help Out” on Monday, 8 May aimed to be the biggest celebration of volunteering in the UK, bringing communities together and creating a lasting legacy from the Coronation.
Volunteers at the Clarence Hall were delighted to “Help Out”, combining efforts with other local organisations to put on an excellent Celebration Tea to mark the Coronation. Cream teas were served on traditional tea services and entertainment was provided by talented local musicians, Ian Kimber on piano and Jonathan Bowden on trumpet. The occasion was attended by over 75 members of our community, including representatives from local care homes and assisted living facilities.
The event was organised by the Trustees of the Clarence Hall, assisted by Crickhowell’s Volunteer Bureau, Pantomime Society, Rotary Club, Dial-a-Ride, Tea Party Foundation and Crickhowell Town Council. A true community effort!

Commenting on the successful event, Deputy Mayor Ann Jeremiah, said: “Events such as this are at the heart of a thriving community and a testament to how local volunteer organisations can work in partnership for the benefit of us all”.
In an unexpected bonus for the Hall, the inclement British weather meant that the family oriented Party in the Park, organised by Crickhowell Town Council and planned for the evening of 8 May in the Castle Grounds, had to be moved inside! Fortunately, the various food and drink concessions were able to be accommodated due to the judicious use of the Hall’s newly renovated kitchen and a well-placed awning, ensuring that the community didn’t miss out. Local bands Noted and Universal Translators took to the stage to delight an all-age audience!
Torfaen Arts returns to the Clarence Hall

Limehouse Lizzy
Limehouse Lizzy are the world’s number one tribute band to Thin Lizzy, continuing to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band alive. On Thursday, 1 June, they’re coming to the Clarence Hall, Crickhowell, courtesy of Global Promotions. Tickets available from CRiC Tourist Centre, Crickhowell; Music One, Abergavenny; and at SEEtickets.com.
As part of the popular Crickhowell Open Studios event over the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend, numerous venues across the locality showcased the wonderful art and creativity that the area inspires. The Clarence Hall was no exception!
We were delighted to welcome back Torfaen Arts, a diverse group of both amateur and professional artists living within Torfaen. Their aim is to produce and show art work of exhibition quality and they didn’t disappoint. The artists work individually in a range of mediums; some are highly experienced and others quite new to painting.
Following the success of their first calendar last year, the group’s first recipe book ‘The Art of Food’ volume 1, was also on sale during the exhibition. The book contained over 30 recipes, each one illustrated by a member of Torfaen Arts.
