CL ARENCE HALL
NEWSLETTER & WHAT’S ON
A memorable month at the Clarence Hall
July has been another vibrant month at the Clarence Hall, filled with music, movement and community.
It began with the Crickhowell Community Concert, when the Hall was packed to the rafters for an event that brought together local schoolchildren, seasoned performers and skilled musicians. Organised by Crickhowell Choral Society in collaboration with Crick Voices, and conducted by Stephen Marshall and Victoria Callow, this was a night of musical celebration across generations.

With a rich and varied programme — from classical favourites to show tunes and pop hits — the concert showcased not only musical excellence but also the vital role of the arts in education. A particular highlight was the appearance by Crick Voices, a choir made up of pupils from local primary schools taking part in a year-long singing project led by Crickhowell High School and supported by the Llangattock Community Education Trust. Their enthusiasm and joy lit up the Hall. The evening concluded with a rousing, full-ensemble rendition of Somebody to Love, complete with live band, and an ovation to match.
Mid-month, the Clarence Hall was transformed into a world of pure imagination for The Golden Ticket, performed by Dance Beats and Toppers School of Dance and Drama. Inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this colourful show was bursting with creativity. From vibrant costumes to polished choreography, the young performers dazzled with their energy and flair.

Huge congratulations to Emma Evans and the creative team — and to every dancer who stepped on stage with such heart and sparkle. Productions like this remind us how much talent we have in our locality and the power of the performing arts to build confidence and delight audiences of all ages.

We ended the month on a high note when we welcomed Alan Fletcher — best known to many as Dr Karl Kennedy from Neighbours. Touring his latest album Back to School, Alan and his band, supported by the talented Riley Catherall, delivered a heartfelt and entertaining set that delighted from start to finish. Blending storytelling with songs both new and familiar, his genuine presence brought warmth and connection to the night. The concert had an intimate, relaxed feel, with plenty of interaction and humour that made everyone feel part of the show.

Jennifer Hansen joined him for a number of lively duets and solo numbers, adding depth and harmony to the line-up. This was far more than a nostalgic nod to soap fame — Alan’s musical skill, connection with the crowd and honest reflections made for a memorable evening. We’re grateful to him for bringing the tour to Crickhowell, and judging by their enthusiastic reaction, the audience would welcome him back any time!
July at Clarence Hall has reminded us once again of the power of performance to connect, inspire and uplift. Thank you to all the performers, teachers, musicians and audience members who made these events so special.
Crickhowell Sixth Form under threat
Following the recent public meeting at the Clarence Hall, it’s clear that the closure of Crickhowelll High School Sixth Form is still being considered as part of wider reforms to post-16 education in Powys. The loss of our Sixth Form would have a significant impact not only on students and families, but on the wider life and identity of the town.
Crickhowell Town Council is urging residents to take action, and has made it simple for you to do so. A template letter and contact details for Powys councillors are available online, so you can make your views known quickly and easily.
Access the letter and contact information here: www.crickhowelltowncouncil.org.uk/sixth-form-future

Sign the petition in person at Crickhowell Volunteer Bureau which is located in the Atrium of the Hall, or online at the following link: www.change.org/p/dismiss-any-post-16education-reform-option-that-closes-crickhowell-high-school-sixth-form
Whether you are a parent, past pupil, local resident or simply someone who values access to high-quality education close to home, your support matters. The more voices we raise, the stronger the message we send: Crickhowell needs its Sixth Form.
