LETTER EDITOR from the

Welcome to the latest issue of Motors Ireland. For this issue we have the Rolls Royce Black Badge Spectre on our cover. In every way, Black Badge Spectre is Rolls-Royce at its most potent and audacious – which perfectly captures the spirit of the bold individuals it has been created for, and who requested it. Black Badge clients are unique within Rolls-Royce – building their success on pushing boundaries and refusing to be defined by traditional codes of luxury. Their approach to luxury is no different. They accept nothing less than the most exquisitely crafted products and uncompromising experiences, but demand a dynamic edge and an unapologetic attitude that reflects their world, their story, and their daring. The decision to craft such a potent motor car was driven by the extraordinary expectations of the marque’s Black Badge clients. Their rigorous demands required an equally formidable engineering response, built on Rolls-Royce’s profound understanding of what a Black Badge should be: effortlessly intense, immediate, and precise.

In addition to debuting bold exterior finishes, vivid interior details, and innovative opportunities for Be-spoke, Black Badge Spectre can summon a four-figure torque output (1075 Nm), with a record 485kW (659 PS) of power. This makes Black Badge Spectre the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history. To ensure this philosophy accurately reflected how clients use their motor cars in the field, a group of Rolls-Royce owners granted engineers access to their anonymised driving data, allowing drivetrain specialists to quantitatively analyse their driving behaviour across hundreds of thousands of collective miles. This revealed that clients exploited maximum power in short pulses more than over extended periods. This insight provided powerful validation of the marque’s approach, perfectly matching the dramatic, intense character of the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever created – meticulously developed in the image of this bold client group.

In this issue we test the new Honda HR-V, BMW X3, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mercedes-Benz EQE AMG, Peugeot 208, Cupra Tavascan, Škoda Superb Combi, MG ZS Hybrid+ and the Xpeng G6. We have a wide variety of reviews in this issue from petrol, diesel to fully electric models so hopefully we have something that might interest you. We also have a full section of Irish news. Enjoy the read!

Marking a new generation of the pioneering EV, all-new LEAF continues to lead the charge in Nissan’s electrification strategy with a sleek design, significantly extended range, and intuitive technology that is seamlessly integrated for today’s connected driver.

TEngineered to tackle key barriers to EV adoption and integrate seamlessly into the wider electric ecosystem, the all-new LEAF delivers a no compromise driving experience. It provides a compelling alternative for internal combustion engine (ICE) buyers, with a substantially increased maximum range (up to 604km), enhanced charging speeds (up to 417km in 30 minutes), and a suite of technologies that makes both driving easier and EV ownership more rewarding.

Today, Nissan is ushering in a new chapter for this nameplate, re-designed and re-engineered to meet the needs of modern EV customers, while remaining true to its innovative roots.

“With the all-new LEAF, we are delivering an electric vehicle that blends elegance, confidence, and breakthrough range - wrapped in a design that’s as smart as it is emotional,” said Arnaud Charpentier, Region Vice President, Marketing & Mobility, Nissan AMIEO. “It brings the best of Nissan innovation to the mainstream, and we’re incredibly excited to introduce it to European roads.”

PEUGEOT 5008 LEADS LARGE SUV SEGMENT

Available in efficient hybrid and all-electric variants, the Peugeot 5008 is proving its appeal across a broad range of drivers. In fact, in 2025, one in four 5008 buyers has chosen the electric version (making it the best-selling electric 7-seatermodel in Ireland), a clear sign of the growing appetite for zero-emissions

motoring without compromising on space or versatility.

The Peugeot 5008 also stands out for its competitive pricing, with both the hybrid and fully electric versions starting from just €50,995 (from €393 per month on PCP finance).

CHAPTER BEGINS

AT MIRAFIORI WITH THE FIAT 500 HYBRID

On the anniversary of the Fiat 500’s debut, FIAT brings the beating heart of its legacy back to Turin. The historic Mirafiori plant opens its doors to unveil the new production line dedicated to the hybrid version of its most iconic model—right where it all began.

Production is set to commence this November, with a goal of delivering 5,000 units by the end of the year. Pre-series models have already rolled off the line, confirming the project is progressing as planned under Stellantis’ strategic roadmap.

This initiative represents a pivotal step in revitalising the Turin plant, aiming to increase production by 100,000 additional units annually. The return of the 500 to its roots is more than a production decision; it’s a sign of confidence in the Italian industrial supply chain and its ability to lead innovation.

The new Fiat 500 Hybrid is the natural evolution of an icon. Timeless FIAT style now embraces cutting-edge technologies

and features, while preserving the unique charm that defines the 500. Available in Hatchback, innovative 3+1, and Cabrio versions, it’s powered by a 1.0L three-cylinder FireFly mild-hybrid engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Inside, it features Uconnect 5 with a 10.25” touchscreen, wireless smartphone compatibility, and a wide range of ADAS for urban safety and comfort. Delivery date of the Fiat 500 Hybrid for the Irish Market will be confirmed later this year.

ROLLS ROYCE BLACK BADGE SPECTRE

Black Badge Spectre is the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveils Black Badge Spectre – the marque’s alter ego, amplified. In addition to debuting bold exterior finishes, vivid interior details, and innovative opportunities for Bespoke, Black Badge Spectre can summon a four-figure torque output (1075 Nm), with a record 485 kW (659 PS) of power. This makes Black Badge Spectre the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history.

“Black Badge Spectre is one of the clearest statements of power and purpose we have ever made. It has been created in the image of our boldest and most audacious clients, with meticulous attention to detail. From the beginning of Black Badge Spectre’s journey, the clients who requested this extraordinary motor car dared us to share their fearless spirit. In response, our engineers combined data science, qualitative feedback, and their own deep knowledge of the brand’s alter ego to craft an intense and uncompromising character, and the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history. Reflecting the Black Badge character, our designers and artisans realised their most dramatic and provocative vision with vivid details and exquisite contemporary crafts. The result is Black

Badge Spectre: the alter ego of our brand, amplified.”

Harnessing Formidable Power

For Black Badge Spectre, the concept of formidable bursts of power is taken to an extreme with two powertrain innovations. Although these functions are new for a Rolls-Royce motor car, they have a historical precedent. In aircraft powered by the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, including the Supermarine Spitfire, pilots could obtain a burst of additional power by pushing a switch on the throttle quadrant. While the robust Merlin engine was easily able to accommodate these temporary pulses, pilots were required to report the use of the function on landing as a precaution to flight engineers – a requirement that does not apply to Black Badge Spectre drivers today.

The first innovation is a unique Infinity Mode, a tribute to the Infinity symbol used to signify a Black Badge Rolls-Royce. Unlocked by pressing the Infinity ∞ button on the steering wheel, the full 485 kW (659 PS) of power is made available, providing a more direct throttle response to the driver. Once this mode is activated, the dials become more vibrant to match the change in the motor car’s character.

Black Badge Spectre also features Spirited Mode, which allows the driver to experience a burst of intense, instan-

taneous acceleration. When the motor car is stationary, the driver engages this function by fully depressing the brake and throttle at the same time, waiting for a haptic and visual response signalling the car is ready, before fully releasing the brake. This temporarily amplifies the torque output to a landmark 1075 Nm, unleashing a surge of force and propelling the motor car from 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds.

Black Badge Chassis Engineering

Rolls-Royce chassis specialists have introduced a number of changes to inspire clients to wield the unprecedented power of Black Badge Spectre with confidence. The steering weight is increased and the roll stabilisation is adjusted to create more feedback from steering inputs and reduce body-roll during cornering. Enhanced dampers also increase body control, reducing ‘squatting’ under acceleration or deceleration. These revisions perfectly balance an enhanced sense of engagement with the effortless operation and fêted Magic Carpet Ride associated with Rolls-Royce motor cars.

“The development of Black Badge Spectre began with our deep understanding of engineering the uncompromising nature of the Black Badge character, overlaid with the detailed analysis of client feedback and their driving style. Black Badge owners from around the world permitted our specialists to access their anonymised data, enabling us to create a new driving experience perfectly suited to – and

validated by – the way our clients use their motor car. Following internal development, a small tranche of ‘secret’ Black Badge Spectres was built for a group of clients who requested the earliest possible access to this motor car. They emphatically approved of our engineering response, highlighting the powerful connection between Rolls-Royce and its clients.”

Dr Bernhard Dressler, Director of Engineering, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

A Clandestine Agreement

Our conversations with clients made it clear that they were eagerly anticipating this motor car’s arrival long before its official debut, compelled by the potential of Spectre rei-

magined through the bold, unwavering lens of Black Badge. In response to their frequent enquiries, Rolls-Royce granted a select group early access to this motor car on the condition that they would keep their ownership secret until the official unveiling – a discreet introduction that resonated with the rebellious spirit of these individuals. A small, highly exclusive fleet of clandestine Black Badge Spectres was commissioned for these individuals ahead of the motor car’s reveal. Their emphatically positive response to Black Badge Spectre, and the motor car’s daring treatment that had been developed in their image, provided powerful validation of the most potent Rolls-Royce in history.

A Darkened Aesthetic

Black Badge Spectre makes its global debut in a new Vapour Violet paint finish, a deep black-violet inspired by the neon ambience of 1980s and 1990s club culture – a celebrated reference among many Black Badge clients. A painted Iced Black bonnet has also been introduced, creating a bold contrast that can be paired with the marque’s palette of 44,000 ‘prêt-à-porter’ colours. Alternatively, clients can develop a Bespoke hue reserved for their exclusive use, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce Bespoke designers.

In addition to the existing shoulder and fender coachline options, clients are now able to commission a ‘waft’ coachline, located on the lower half of the super coupé. This accentuates a crisp design line on the lower third of the motor car, subtly emphasising its commanding form and generous proportions.

Black Badge Spectre also introduces a bold new 23-inch five-spoke forged aluminium wheel design. Available in a part-polished or all-black finish, the complex geometry subtly indicates the hidden technical complexity and potency of this motor car. Highlighting the increasingly broad geography of Black Badge clients, winter tyres are available for the new wheelset from launch.

As with all Black Badge models before it, Black Badge Spectre’s mirror-polished brightwork is presented in a signature dark finish, signalling its subversive, noire character. This includes the marque’s hallmark Pantheon Grille surround, Spirit of Ecstasy, and the double ‘R’ Badge of Honour, as well as the motor car’s door handles, expansive side window surround and bumper accents.

Vivid Illuminations

Furthering its commitment to advanced, contemporary crafts, Rolls-Royce has developed a unique feature that enhances and intensifies Black Badge Spectre’s Illuminated Grille. A new Illuminated Grille backplate has been introduced for the motor car, which is offered in Tailored Purple, Charles Blue, Chartreuse, Forge Yellow and Turchese, allowing clients to extend their chosen colour onto this new canvas, or create a unique accent to complement a coachline or the interior. This vibrantly coloured illumination can extend into the interior with newly developed Illuminated Black Badge Treadplates, which are available in ten complementary colours.

A Vibrant Inner Sanctuary

From the moment you enter Black Badge Spectre, its rebellious character is immediately apparent through the bold interior treatment.

The unique pattern on the Illuminated Fascia, which is an abstract expression of the Spirit of Ecstasy, now incorporates the Infinity symbol used across the wider Black Badge family. A statement of infinite power, the emblem once marked historical water-speed records and is a hallmark trusted by adrenaline pioneers. The fascia comprises over 5,500 ‘stars’ of varying proportions and intensity, set in a

Piano Black ‘sky’.

Framing this advanced craft feature is a richly complex Technical Fibre surface finish. This diamond-shaped weave uses carbon and fine metal thread on top of a black Bolivar wood base. The thread is laid by hand in a diamond pattern between layers of carbon fibre, creating a three-dimensional effect. Once cured, each interior piece is sandblasted, sealed with six layers of lacquer, and hand-polished to a flawless finish, adding striking depth and clarity.

The Black Badge Infinity symbol is further incorporated in the motor car, stitched into the leather ‘Waterfall’ section, which separates the rear seats.

Black Badge Spectre’s instrument dials can be curated with a choice of five colour themes: Vivid Grellow, Neon Nights, Cyan Fire, Ultraviolet and Synth Wave, allowing clients to harmonise the physical and digital surfaces within their motor car via the SPIRIT operating system. This digital architecture of luxury also grants access to remote charging and location information, and the marque’s exclusive digital members club, Whispers.

Dramatic By Design

Black Badge Spectre is a motor car born of fearless expression and focus, meticulously crafted in the image of the daring individuals it was made to serve. Its landmark power output, chassis technologies, and expansive potential for Bespoke open a vivid new chapter in the highly successful stories of Black Badge – the formidable alter ego of Rolls-Royce.

FIVE INTERESTING MOTORING FACTS WE LEARNT FOR THIS ISSUE

Mercedes-benz, Ferrari, Maserati, BMW, & XPeng

1 M

MERCEDES-BENZ G-CLASS

ercedes-Benz has confirmed that orders are now being taken for their all-new 2025 edition G-Class first models of which are now available to customers in Ireland.

Solidly within the premier league of all-terrain vehicles, G-Class is renowned for its deluxe features and exceptional off-road performance. Models that make-up the new G-Class range – with mild hybrid choices in the model mix – include conventional petrol and diesel-powered units alongside an all-electric EV version, all in three distinct lines: Exclusive, Superior and sporty AMG line styling.

Referred to by some as ‘the ultimate SUV’, in its latest form it remains wholly faithful to the vision which Mercedes-Benz had for it when the original ‘Geländewagen’ was launched in 1979. In the 45 years since then, its appeal as a multi-use, multi-faceted vehicle has remained intact with an appearance that has changed little over time.

Visually, its most notable outer changes include redesigned front and rear bumpers, and new grille with ‘star’ and four horizontal louvres instead of the previous three. Other features to watch for include its tried-and-tested ladder-frame construction. Refinements include new A-pillar cladding, a spoiler lip on the roof edge, and new insulation materials contribute to improved aerodynamics and increased acoustic comfort.

A fully remodelled interior adds to the appeal it will have for a new, younger generation of owners, as will the availability of an almost limitless range of customisation options.

Inside, occupants experience a greater level of luxury and comfort, and a greater feeling of safety and protection thanks to its somewhat elevated ride-height. Brightly lit, its interior appointments include stitched leather seats and trim with ash and walnut insets.

MBUX infotainment, tech and driver information displays are controlled via a touch pad interface positioned on the central console close to the driver’s hand. Heating and air conditioning can be operated by finger-touch buttons that are easy-to-reach, easy to read, and easy-to-operate.

Front and rear headroom is generous – even for the taller-than-average rear seat occupant. Boot space is easily accessed through a full-height, full-width, side-opening rear door fixed to which is a spare wheel housed within a fully encased, colour-matched metal cover.

As G-Class fans will know, part of its attraction is the fact that it doesn’t pretend to be what it is not. Everything about it is focused on giving owners all that they might expect of it and by doing it well – whether on smooth city and suburban streets or on rough and tumble cross country tracks.

Admired by many, other appealing features of G-Class ownership is its imperviousness to changing trends and design fads, and the probability that – like an old violin – it will retain its value over time. Current prices begin from €166,280 for the G 580 with EQ technology with a rated output of 432 kW / 587 hp.

FERRARI AMALFI 2

The new Ferrari Amalfi, a front-mid-engine V8 2+ coupé that replaces the Ferrari Roma in the Prancing Horse line-up, was unveiled recently. The Ferrari Amalfi redefines the concept of contemporary sportiness, combining high performance, versatility, and refined aesthetics. Designed for those who want to enjoy sporty driving without sacrificing comfort and style, the Ferrari Amalfi stands out for its unprecedented balance between adrenaline and everyday usability.

The car’s design stems from a fluid and minimalist approach, with sculpted volumes and clean surfaces that express modernity

and dynamism. The front is dominated by a large air intake and a long, sculpted bonnet housing the 640 cv turbo V8 engine. At the rear, the integrated active spoiler contributes to high-speed stability, while forged wheels and carbon fibre details complete a sporty and sophisticated aesthetic.

At the heart of the Ferrari Amalfi is an evolved twin-turbo V8 derived from the award-winning F154 family, capable of delivering 640 cv thanks to new turbocharging calibrations. The highly acclaimed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission ensures fast and smooth gear changes. Performance is outstanding: 0–100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 9.0 seconds, with a power-to-weight ratio of 2.29 kg/hp, the best in its class.

MASERATI MCPURA

Maserati has raised the curtain on the world premiere of the new MCPURA super sports car, an expression of the purest essence of energy and performance the Trident way. The new masterpiece, 100% made in Italy, was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2025, the international event that every year celebrates the most iconic cars and the most extraordinary performances in the evocative setting of the South Downs National Park, West Sussex.

An evolution of the MC20 Halo Car – which in 2020 launched a new era for the brand – the new MCPURA takes up its spirit and amplifies it to its most intense and refined form. The work has focused on the exterior design, materials and interior finishes, but the core remains the same: the powerful and unmistakable 630CV V6 Nettuno engine, a symbol of Maserati’s passion for performance. After all, MCPURA encompasses everything that makes

the Maserati driving experience unique, i.e. the ability to connect without filters with the driver, transmitting the most extreme elegance, exhilarating driving performance and timeless artisanship.

Santo Ficili, Maserati COO, stated: “With MCPURA, Maserati is once again regaining its rightful place: at the top and in its stomping ground. Both versions – coupé and Cielo – are created at our historic Modena facility, where the heart of the Trident has been beating for almost 90 years. This is where the entire MCPURA production process takes place: we produce the Nettuno engine, assemble each component and carry out the most exclusive customisation at the Maserati Officine Fuoriserie. Modena is not just our headquarters; it forms part of our identity. We are the oldest automotive marque in the Motor Valley, an area we have helped to build and that we continue to represent around the world. From there, we proudly tell the story of Italian excellence and luxury”.

BMW XM

The BMW XM portfolio is now streamlined to two models: the range-topping XM Label and the XM 50e. The XM Label combines a V8 engine (430 kW/585 hp) with an electric motor (145 kW/197 hp) for a staggering system output of 550 kW/748 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque. It sprints from 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and offers a 76 km electric range. The XM 50e retains its six-cylinder hybrid setup with 80–86 km electric range.

The XM Label gains new customisation options, including BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic paint, a high-gloss black kidney grille, and a striking Welcome Light Animation. Standard wheels are upgraded to 22-inch alloys, with optional 23-inch M light alloys in black. Interior choices expand with Merino leather in Night Blue, Silverstone, or Black with Vintage Coffee Brown accents. Comfort cushions now come as standard, and AC charging improves to 11 kW.

The refreshed XM Label will debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 14 June 2025, where BMW M Motorsport competes with the M Hybrid V8 in the FIA WEC. No prices for Ireland yet.

BMW X3

BMW’s updated X3 xDrive20d M Sport blends sharp styling, diesel efficiency, and premium tech to remain one of Ireland’s SUV benchmarks.

“Step inside and the X3’s cabin feels every inch a premium product.”

Spending a few days behind the wheel of the updated BMW X3 xDrive20d M Sport reminded me why this SUV continues to set the benchmark in its segment. In a market where many rivals feel like compromises, the X3 feels purposeful - balancing diesel efficiency with sharp driving dynamics and a cabin that’s a real step up in quality. The M Sport trim brings an added sense of occasion, while the latest tech suite feels bang up to date.

From the outside, the 2025 facelift brings a sharper, more modern face without abandoning the classic X3 proportions. The larger kidney grille now feels more integrated, flanked by slimmer LED headlights with high-beam assist as standard. My M Sport test car stood out with gloss-black Shadowline trim, an aerodynamic front apron, and 20-inch M alloys that strike just the right balance between style and comfort. My test vehicle had the M Sport Package Pro which includes adaptive suspension, light up grille and other styling add ons. Around the back, reworked tail-lights and sculpted exhaust tips complete the premium look. It’s not flashy, but there’s a quiet confidence to the design that suits Irish buyers who like understated quality.

Step inside and the X3’s cabin feels every inch a premium product. The curved twin digital screens - 12.3 inches for the driver, 14.9 inches for infotainment - dominate the dash, running BMW’s latest iDrive 9 software. The layout is clean and logical, and the system works well whether you use touch, voice control, or the trusty rotary controller. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, as is BMW Maps with live traffic data.

The M Sport seats are excellent—heated, electrically adjustable, and perfectly supportive for long journeys. Space in the rear is generous enough for adults, and the 550-litre boot (expandable to

1,600 litres with the seats folded) swallowed my work equipment and a few bulky bags without complaint.

Under the bonnet, the familiar 2.0-litre diesel engine remains a highlight. With 197hp and 400Nm of torque on tap, it’s a willing companion whether you’re pottering around Dublin traffic or stretching its legs on the M50. The 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox is slick and unobtrusive, while xDrive all-wheel drive adds confidence in wet conditions.

The M Sport suspension setup is on the firmer side, but it never felt harsh over patchy city roads. Out on a twisty back road locally, the X3 proved surprisingly agile for an SUV, with accurate steering and composure that encourage you to push on a little. Despite this dynamic ability, fuel economy hovered around 5.5L/100km (roughly 51mpg), which is hugely impressive for a car of this size.

The X3 packs in all the safety kit you’d expect. Standard features include lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking, and a rear-view camera. My M Sport tester added adaptive cruise control, parking assistant with surround view, and a head-up display—useful in city traffic and on longer motorway jaunts.

Irish Pricing and Trims for 2025

• M Sport Pro Package: Optional on M Sport, bringing adaptive suspension, a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, and 20” wheels. Well-specified models approach €104,474.

“The X3 packs in all the safety kit you’d expect.”

Annual road tax is a reasonable €280, thanks to CO2 emissions of just 155g/km.

Conclusion

BMW has done just enough with this latest X3 to keep it feeling fresh and competitive in a crowded SUV market. It’s a car that mixes premium refinement with engaging driving dynamics and genuine practicality. The diesel engine remains a strong choice in Ireland for buyers covering serious mileage, and in M Sport guise, it looks and feels like a proper driver’s car.

At €78,242, the xDrive20d M Sport isn’t cheap, but it delivers on every promise—style, substance, and that elusive BMW magic behind the wheel. For Irish families who want one SUV to do it all, this could be it.

“With 197hp and 400Nm of torque on tap.”

After a week behind the wheel of the new Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), it’s clear this model represents a leap forward for Hyundai. This fifth-generation Santa Fe pairs rugged new styling with serious hybrid credentials, aiming squarely at modern families who want space, practicality, and efficiency.

The styling direction is a bold departure from previous Santa Fe generations. The SUV now wears a squared-off, boxier design that feels more like a modern-day adventure vehicle than a family soft-roader. The wide, upright grille with its H-pattern LED daytime lights dominates the front, flanked by equally angular lines along the bonnet and sides. Around back, the tailgate continues the squared-off theme, with vertical lights and a broad stance. It’s a fresh take that won’t appeal to everyone but gives the Santa Fe a unique road presence.

Built on the updated N3 platform, the Santa Fe PHEV benefits from improved rigidity and ride comfort. Under the bonnet lies a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor and 13.8kWh battery. The system delivers 265hp through a six-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. It’s a setup that strikes a balance between everyday usability and eco-consciousness. The electric-only range - around 58km - is enough to handle most local journeys. On a 7kW home charger, expect a full charge in about 3.5 hours.

Inside, the Santa Fe leans into modern practicality. Dominating the dash are dual 12.3-inch screens—one for the driver and another for infotainment - paired with physical controls for climate and audio. This blend of digital and tactile makes daily use intuitive. Materials throughout the cabin feel premium, with soft-touch finishes and eco-conscious fabric choices.

It’s a proper seven-seater, too. The second-row bench offers excellent legroom, while the third row is best suited to kids or short adults, though it now gets USB-C ports, air vents, and cupholders. Boot space is generous at 571 litres with all seats up, expanding dramati-

cally once the third and second rows are folded flat.

On Irish roads, the Santa Fe PHEV is impressively refined. The hybrid system transitions smoothly between electric and petrol power, and when running on electricity alone, the SUV glides along in near silence. Acceleration is respectable, and the torque from the electric motor means it never feels sluggish, especially in urban settings.

Handling is composed. It’s no sports SUV, but the steering is light and accurate, and the body remains well-controlled through corners. The suspension is tuned more for comfort than sharpness, absorbing bumps effectively. It’s a relaxing cruiser on the motorway and easy to manage around town.

The Santa Fe is loaded with driver-assistance systems:

adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring. Features like a 360-degree camera, head-up display, and remote parking assist bring luxury-level con venience. Over-the-air updates keep systems current, whi le Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offer seamless smar tphone connectivity.

The Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV is a significant step forward for Hyundai’s flagship SUV. It’s spacious, well-equipped, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed for family life. More importantly, it’s a plug-in hybrid that genuinely wor ks for everyday driving. Whether you’re running on battery for short school runs or using both power sources for lon ger weekend getaways, it delivers.

There are two main trims for the PHEV: Premium (from €66,995): Comes well-equipped with 19-inch alloys, dual

Conclusion

With bold looks, refined road manners, and real-world electric range, this new Santa Fe makes a strong case for itself in a competitive market. If you’re after a seven-seat SUV that doesn’t compromise on style or sustainability, this could be your perfect middle ground.

Spending a week behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz EQE AMG 43 4MATIC revealed just how far performance electric saloons have come. This model blends the raw muscle of AMG with the smooth, silent delivery of a cutting-edge EV - and the result is every bit as thrilling as you’d hope.

The EQE AMG 43 breaks from traditional Mercedes-Benz design with a sleek, coupe-inspired silhouette and a broad stance that oozes confidence. The gloss-black front grille panel features vertical chrome strakes that shimmer beneath the LED headlights, adding an aggressive edge. With flush door handles, bold wheel arches, and a full-width rear light bar, the EQE AMG 43 stands out without shouting. It’s a classy kind of sporty - less boy racer, more business executive who happens to enjoy speed.

Sitting on Mercedes’ EVA2 architecture, the EQE AMG 43 is built for electric efficiency and rigidity. Twin electric motors, one on each axle, combine to produce 476 horsepower and 858 Nm of torque. Power delivery is immediate and surprisingly linear, launching the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just over four seconds. Despite the pace, it remains civilisedno unnecessary drama, just crisp acceleration and near-silent operation. A 90.6 kWh battery pack supplies the juice, and in real-world mixed driving, the car managed around 480 km on a full charge - comfortably close to its rated maximum of 534 km.

Inside, the EQE AMG 43 strikes a fine balance between high-end tech and AMG drama. The cabin is dominated by two large displays—one in front of the driver, the other floating centrally—both running the latest version of Mercedes’ MBUX system. It’s intuitive and clean, though it helps to spend a few minutes exploring the menus. The optional Hyperscreen stretches across the dashboard and adds a third display for the front passenger, making the entire cabin feel like a rolling command centre.

Materials are excellent throughout - leather, microfibre, aluminium - all pieced together with attention to detail. The red contrast stitching, AMG performance seats, and flat-bottomed steering wheel offer a subtle nod to the brand’s performance heritage, while still maintaining comfort on long drives. Cabin space is generous, and the rear seats offer adult-friendly legroom. The boot is decently sized too, at 430 litres.

From a tech perspective, the EQE AMG 43 is packed. Voice recognition is responsive, the augmented reality navigation overlay is genuinely helpful, and all the driver assistance systems—from lane keeping to adaptive cruise—work seamlessly. There’s also rear-axle steering as standard, which reduces the turning circle dramatically and improves agility at low speeds. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, as are over-the-air software updates that future-proof the vehicle’s systems.

Charging speeds are competitive, with support for up to 170 kW DC fast charging. That translates to 10 - 80% in just over

half an hour when hooked up to a high-power charger. At home, the 11 kW onboard charger handles overnight top-ups easily, and there’s an option to upgrade to 22 kW if you want even faster AC charging. With an estimated real-world range hovering between 450 and 500 km depending on conditions and driving style, the EQE 43 AMG feels as usable as a combustion-powered luxury saloon - just cleaner and quieter.

In Ireland, the Mercedes-Benz EQE AMG 43 4MATIC is priced from approximately €118,865, offering a high level of standard equipment that includes twin electric motors producing 476 bhp, AMG-specific styling, 21inch alloy wheels, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and a 90.6 kWh battery capable of delivering a WLTP range of up to 534 km. Optional upgrade packages can add further enhancements like the full-width MBUX Hyperscreen, Burmester surround sound system, head-up display, panoramic sunroof, and augmented reality navigation.

On the road, the EQE AMG 43 carries a dual personality. It’s impressively comfortable for everyday driving, with adaptive suspension smoothing out rough patches of tarmac. But switch to Sport or Sport+ mode, and the car tightens up noticeably - steering becomes sharper, throttle response more eager, and the suspension firms up to keep the chassis planted. There’s even an artificial sound generator that mimics a sporty rumble inside the cabin. It may be synthetic, but it adds theatre to what would otherwise be an eerily quiet drive.

The all-wheel drive system ensures traction is never an issue, even on wet Irish backroads. Corners are dispatched with surprising agility for a car this size, helped by the low centre of gravity and smart torque distribution. Braking is strong and regenerative braking can be fine-tuned for a one-pedal driving experience.

Conclusion

The Mercedes-Benz EQE AMG 43 might not roar like its V8 predecessors, but it delivers something arguably more refined: high-performance motoring without compromise. It’s sleek, comfortable, packed with technology, and powerful enough to thrill, all while being easier on the environment. For those looking to make the leap into electric without losing the joy of driving, this car makes a compelling case. Driving it through Dublin, with everything from tight streets to motorway blasts, proved that AMG’s electric future is not only viable—it’s genuinely exciting.

HR-V HONDA

The Honda HR-V e:HEV blends hybrid efficiency, comfort, and smart design, offering Irish drivers a refined, eco-friendly crossover.

The Honda HR-V e:HEV might not shout for attention, but after a week of driving it around County Dublin and Kildare, I can confidently say it deserves it. In a market packed with flashy crossovers and complicated electrification setups, Honda’s compact hybrid SUV focuses on quietly doing everything right — and that’s exactly why it works.

From the outside, Honda hasn’t gone wild with the design updates in this third generation, and that’s a good thing. The HR-V’s clean lines and coupe-like silhouette carry over, but the refreshed front end is more confident now, with a smoother integration of grille and bumper design. The LED headlight clusters have been darkened slightly, and there’s a new light signature at the rear that adds a bit of visual width. It’s not a radical makeover, but it sharpens the overall look just enough to keep things modern and relevant.

Around town, it doesn’t draw too much attention — but up close, there’s an elegance to the proportions and surface detailing that gives it a premium edge, especially in the deeper paint colours.

The HR-V rides on Honda’s compact global platform, which has been subtly refined for the 2025 version to improve ride comfort and body control. But the real star is the e:HEV hybrid setup. Beneath the bonnet is a 1.5-litre i-mmd (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) Atkinson-cycle petrol engine mated to two electric motors — one for propulsion and one as a generator. The result is a clever self-charging hybrid system that switches between electric-only, hybrid, and engine drive without needing any input from the driver. The total output is 131hp and 253Nm of torque, but more important than the numbers is how smoothly the system operates.

In real-world Irish conditions — motorways, rural roads, and Dublin traffic alike — the hybrid setup impressed me with its refinement. It starts off silently in EV mode, switches to hybrid under load, and then seamlessly engages the engine when needed for faster cruising. At no point does it feel clunky or intrusive. It just works.

Fuel economy over a mixed route hovered around 5.2L/100km, with no effort to drive economically. And thanks to regenerative braking and a smart e-CVT system, it’s particularly efficient in stop-start conditions.

Slip inside the cabin and it becomes clear how much thought Honda has put into practicality. The layout is simple, intuitive, and well-finished. Soft-touch materials are used where they matter most, and the mix of leatherette and fabric on the seats gives a nice tactile feel without pretending to be luxury.

The front seats are supportive and well-shaped for longer journeys, and the driving position is pleasantly elevated without feeling SUV-like bulky. Visibility is excellent, aided by thin pillars and good mirror placement. Rear-seat space is genuinely generous for a car in this class, and Honda’s Magic Seats continue to be a standout feature. Flip the seat bases up or fold them flat — the flexibility they offer turns this compact crossover into a surprisingly capable load-lugger. Boot space starts at 335 litres and opens up to over 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded.

The inclusion of heated front seats, heated steering wheel, multi view camera system, wireless smartphone charging, and dual USB-C ports helped meet the expectations of today’s tech-savvy drivers.

At the centre of the dashboard is a 9-inch touchscreen running Honda’s latest infotainment system. It’s quicker to respond than older setups and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. While it won’t blow anyone away with flashy graphics, it’s functional and

easy to navigate — and, crucially, Honda has kept physical knobs for climate control, which are always appreciated.

In terms of driver assistance, the HR-V is fully loaded with the Honda Sensing suite. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, collision mitigation braking system and front and rear collision mitigation throttle control.

The biggest surprise in driving the HR-V e:HEV is just how competent it feels behind the wheel. No, it’s not a performance machine — and it doesn’t try to be — but it’s stable, composed, and surprisingly engaging for a hybrid crossover. The steering has good weighting and accuracy, which made it easy to place the car confidently through narrow rural roads. The suspension strikes a solid balance between absorbing bumps and maintaining body control. At motorway speeds, the HR-V feels settled and refined, with minimal wind noise and a well-insulated cabin.

Perhaps most impressive is how predictable and smooth the hybrid system feels under various driving loads. There’s no sudden surging or hunting for power; instead, you get a consistently calm and responsive feel whether you’re overtaking, merging, or just cruising through town.

In Ireland, the 2025 Honda HR-V e:HEV is available in four trim levels, each offering a blend of efficiency and features. The entry-level Elegance trim starts at €41,750, providing essential amenities and the efficient hybrid powertrain. Stepping up, the Advance trim is priced at €44,500, adding enhancements like a power tailgate and additional comfort features. The Advance Style variant, at €47,500, introduces stylistic upgrades and advanced technology. At the top, the Advance Style Plus trim is available for €49,750, offering premium features and distinctive design elements. Metallic paint costs €600.

All models are equipped with the 1.5-litre e:HEV full hybrid system, delivering 131 PS and emitting 122 g/km of CO2, with a annual road tax of €200 across the range.

Conclusion

In a world obsessed with flashiness and over-the-top power figures, the 2025 Honda HR-V e:HEV takes a different path — one of subtlety, efficiency, and real-world usability. It’s not the fastest, the largest, or the most tech-laden SUV in its segment, but it might just be the most well-rounded.

For Irish drivers looking for a compact crossover that combines hybrid efficiency with everyday practicality and a pleasant driving experience, the HR-V makes a strong case for itself. You get thoughtful design, intelligent engineering, and a hybrid system that behaves exactly as it should — smoothly, silently, and reliably. It’s not just a good hybrid. It’s a great car, full stop.

PEUGEOT 208

The new Peugeot 208 Hybrid blends sharp design, impressive efficiency, and agile handling, offering a refined urban driving experience with modern tech and ecoconscious performance for daily commutes.

“The chassis is tight, grip levels are high, and body roll is kept in check.”

The 2025 Peugeot 208 Hybrid landed in my hands during one of those classic Irish weeksthree seasons in a day, the kind that tests a car’s versatility. After putting it through its paces, I can say this small hatch punches well above its weight in style, tech, and real-world efficiency.

The latest 208 has been sharpened where it counts. Up front, Peugeot’s new-look grille and those unmistakable three-claw LED headlights give the car a feline, almost defiant presence. It’s clean, compact, and properly proportioned—ideal for tight city streets. My GT test car came dressed in ‘Agueda Yellow’ with 17-inch diamond-cut alloys and gloss black details that gave it a sporty edge without crossing into try-hard territory. It’s clear Peugeot wants this to be more than just an economical runabout— it’s a style statement, and a solid one at that.

Inside, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit layout continues to split opinion, but I’ve grown to appreciate the raised digital instrument cluster and the compact steering wheel that sits low in your lap. Once you get used to the setup, it works. The 10-inch central touchscreen is slick and quick, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto baked in, so it’s easy to sync up and go. The GT model adds ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, and a much sharper rear camera display—welcome touches that elevate the in-cabin experience.

While rear space isn’t huge, it’s not claustrophobic either. The boot offers a usable 311 litres, which is plenty for grocery runs, gym bags or a weekend away. Materials feel durable, with a nice mix of soft-touch finishes and metallic accents, particularly in the GT.

Under the bonnet, Peugeot’s mild hybrid system mates a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 48-volt battery and a compact electric motor, all run-

ning through a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. Power delivery is immediate but controlled - ideal for the stop-start rhythms of city driving.

On the M50 and out towards Blessington, the 208 held its own. It’s not fast in the traditional sense, but the instant torque from the electric side gives it punch where you need it - pulling out of junctions, overtaking tractors, or merging onto a roundabout. The e-DCT gearbox is refined, handling transitions between electric and petrol propulsion smoothly, with none of the rubbery hesitation you sometimes get in small hybrid systems.

Over mixed driving, I averaged around 5.2L/100km, just above the official 4.7L/100km. Regenerative braking is subtle, and there’s no intrusive whine or vibration - just an easy, fuss-free drive.

Too often, car tech is a gimmick - a selling point rather than a benefit. The 208 avoids that trap. Peugeot’s suite of safety and driver-assist features includes lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control (on GT), and blind spot monitoring. Everything works intuitively and remains unobtrusive. There’s no excessive beeping or intrusive corrections - just smart support that quietly keeps you in check.

The digital cluster is bright and easy to read, and customisable layouts mean you can focus on nav, efficiency, or traditional speedo visuals depending on your drive. It’s well executed, and unlike in some rivals, it all feels integrated rather than tacked on.

Around town, the 208 is light on its feet. The small steering wheel gives it a dart-like quality, and visibility is generally good from the driver’s seat. It soaks up potholes and speed bumps with more composure than you’d expect from a car this size, especially on the GT’s 17-inch wheels.

On country roads, it’s actually quite fun. The chassis is tight, grip levels are high, and body roll is kept in check. You won’t confuse it with a hot hatch, but it’s engaging in its own right. Importantly, it remains quiet inside even at motorway speeds, with wind and road noise impressively muted.

Peugeot Ireland keeps it simple for 2025. There are two hybrid trim levels:

• Allure Hybrid 100 (Auto) – Priced from €30,995, this version includes the 10” touchscreen, LED headlights, alloy wheels, digital i-Cockpit, rear parking sensors, and dual-zone climate control. It’s a solid spec for the money.

• GT Hybrid 100 (Auto) – From €32,695, you gain larger alloys, gloss black trim, ambient lighting, the HD reversing camera, wireless smartphone charging and half-leather sport seats. It also features extra driving assistance features, including adaptive cruise and blind spot monitoring.

The 2025 Peugeot 208 Hybrid in Ireland is available in two main trims: Allure and GT, both powered by a 1.2L petrol

engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system producing 110hp and 136hp, paired with a 6-speed e-DCS automatic transmission. The Allure trim starts around €30,995, while the GT is priced from approximately €32,695, with road tax set at €180 annually and CO2 emissions between 102–104g/ km. Both trims offer strong fuel efficiency (~4.7L/100km) and feature modern tech and styling, with the GT including additional design and interior upgrades.

Conclusion

The Peugeot 208 Hybrid is one of those rare small cars that manages to feel special. It looks great, drives with genuine charm, and brings a level of technology and efficiency that few competitors match at this price. With Irish prices starting just above €30k and equipment that wouldn’t look out of place in a car twice the size, it’s a serious contender for urban drivers who want a dash of flair with their function.

It’s not the biggest or fastest hatchback on the road—but in a week behind the wheel, I never once wished for more. And that might be the highest praise I can offer.

Model Peugeot 208 Hybrid

Cupra’s all-electric revolution has arrived in Ireland, and its boldest expression yet is the new Tavascan. I had the opportunity to spend time with this striking SUV-coupe on the roads around Dublin and Kildare along with a trip to Co Wicklow, and the experience proved just how far Cupra has come in merging performance, practicality, and panache into one battery-powered package.

At a glance, the Tavascan makes a statement. It doesn’t simply follow the trend of swooping rooflines or flashy lights—it invents its own language of athleticism. The front is dominated by angular lighting signatures and a sharply sculpted bonnet that adds tension without aggression. From the side, the coupe profile drops neatly toward a rear end that’s both muscular and modern, highlighted by a horizontal light bar and Cupra’s signature bronze accents.

The 19-inch wheels fitted to my test car added to the presence, while subtle aero sculpting around the wheel arches and sills reinforces that this car wasn’t just styled for showroom floors—it was shaped for airflow and efficiency.

Underneath, the Tavascan Type 4 model we were testing rides on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform—also used in models like the ID.5—but this doesn’t feel like a rebadged cousin. With a rear-mounted 286hp motor and a 77 kWh battery, this particular version offered up to 568 km of range on paper, and I found that estimate surprisingly achievable during mixed driving in and around Dublin.

The single-motor setup drives the rear wheels, which is a refreshing layout in today’s sea of front-drive crossovers. It lends the Tavascan a more balanced feel on the road, especially when pushing through corners. There’s a natural poise to the chassis, aided by low-mounted battery weight and well-calibrated steering.

Cupra interiors have always flirted with sportiness and drama, and the Tavascan takes that ethos to the next level. The cabin feels futuristic without being fussy. The 15-inch floating touchscreen dominates the dash but is intuitively laid out, and thankfully, Cupra has retained some physical controls for essentials. Materials are impressive too. My test car featured supportive bucket-style seats upholstered in recycled textiles, paired with Alcantara-style inserts and bronze highlights that added warmth. Rear space is more generous than the sloping roof suggests, and the boot—offering around 540 litres—handled weekend luggage and shopping without issue. There’s genuine attention to detail here. Everything from the angular dashboard design to the illuminated Cupra logos speaks to a brand keen to craft an identity distinct from its corporate siblings.

The Tavascan’s infotainment system was fluid and modern. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto worked faultlessly during my time with the car, while the native UI provided customisation options, including driving modes and regenerative braking settings. A full suite of driver assistance features comes standard, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign

Cupra’s bold new Tavascan brings electric performance, striking design, and a premium edge to Ireland’s EV scene, redefining what a sporty SUV can be.

recognition, and blind-spot monitoring.

With 135 kW DC fast charging capability, the Tavascan can replenish from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes—perfect for coffee stops or motorway breaks. At home, a full topup using an 11 kW wallbox took just under 8 hours. Range in the real world was impressive. On a combination of city runs, backroads, and a longer motorway stint down to Wicklow and back, I averaged close to 500 km on a single charge. Regenerative braking, particularly in “B” mode, was well judged and contributed to a smoother drive in traffic-heavy scenarios.

Despite its sloped roofline and visual edge, the Tavascan doesn’t try to be a track star—it’s tuned for road comfort with a dash of flair. The rear-wheel-drive layout adds dynamism, especially when cornering, and while it doesn’t

snap your neck off the line, the instant torque gives it plenty of real-world punch.

Ride quality over local patchy roads and speed bumps was refined, thanks to a well-damped suspension setup. Even with the large wheels, the car never felt unsettled. The steering is light but accurate, and at motorway speeds, the Tavascan remains composed and quiet, with excellent noise insulation.

Driving the Cupra Tavascan felt like stepping into a future where style and substance don’t have to be mutually exclusive. It’s a car that looks different, feels unique, and drives with the kind of clarity and purpose that suggests real engineering care. More than just another badge on a shared platform, this is Cupra carving out a distinct space in the electric vehicle landscape. It’s quick enough, refined

enough, and bold enough to turn heads without shouting. If this is what the electric future looks like, I’m all for it— and judging by the reactions I received, so are plenty of others.

In Ireland, the 2025 Cupra Tavascan range kicks off with the Endurance Type 4, starting at €44,365 including SEAI grants. This version gets a solid list of standard features like 19-inch alloy wheels, sports bucket seats, a 15-inch infotainment display, and a rear-view camera, all powered by a 77kWh battery offering up to 569 km of WLTP range. Stepping up to the Endurance Type 6—priced from €54,765—you’ll get extras like larger 21-inch wheels, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a Sennheiser sound system, and a 360-degree Top-View camera system. The Endurance Type 7 is priced from €61,575 with an electric range of 503km. Standard equipment 21-inch ETNA Forged alloy wheels, interior ambient lighting, dark tin-

ted rear windows, welcome light (mirror), keyless locking and starting, power seat adjustment for both front seats and plenty more. For drivers wanting more punch, the VZ models offer dual-motor all-wheel drive with 340hp, and pricing for these higher-performance trims stretches from €70,210 to €75,550. Finance options are competitive too so check online or with your local Cupra dealer for details. It’s a strong, well-priced line-up that makes the Tavascan one of the more compelling new EVs on Irish roads right now.

Conclusion

The Cupra Tavascan blends head-turning design, impressive electric range, and engaging dynamics into a standout EV package. It’s a confident, stylish choice for Irish drivers seeking something distinctly different in today’s crowded electric SUV market.

Ispent a full week navigating the roads in the new Škoda Superb Combi Sportline PHEV, and it quickly became clear this is far more than just a spacious estate—it’s a masterclass in plug-in hybrid engineering. This Sportline variant proves there’s no need to choose between style, space, or efficiency.

From the outset, the Superb’s refined lines make a strong visual impression. The Sportline trim adds a tougher character with dark-tinted 19-inch Torcular alloys, sleek matrix LED headlights, and a sportier grille—all combining to deliver a polished yet purposeful silhouette. Its elongated roofline and built-in spoiler hint at superb cargo utility without sacrificing elegance.

Powered by a 1.5 TSI petrol engine, an 85 kW electric motor, and a 25.7 kWh battery, this front-wheel-drive estate blends eco-sense with genuine driveability. The combined 204 hp and 350 Nm torque feel effortless in everyday use. I was genuinely impressed by the seamless transition between electric and petrol modes—cruising on electricity alone proved surprisingly smooth during urban drives. The battery offered around 100 km of real-world all-electric range—just shy of Škoda’s peak claim, but still excellent for daily routines. Charging from 10–80 % in around half an hour via DC, or overnight via AC in 2.5 hours, makes it easy to keep topped up.

Inside, the Superb Combi Sportline marries tech-savvy comfort with everyday practicality. A crisp 10.25” digital instrument cluster works in harmony with a 13” infotainment screen equipped with intuitive “Smart Dials” and elevated touch controls. The cabin breathes premium character with sport seats finished in leather and Alcantara, and ambient lighting accentuating the sleek dashboard and piano-black trim. Legroom is exceptional in the rear, and the estate layout delivers a generous 690 litres of luggage capacity - extending to nearly 1,920 litres with the seats down - ideal for families or long trips.

The Sportline is loaded with useful kit: adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, 360° camera, and full matrix LED lighting. Connectivity is seamless with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The top L&K trim steps things up with premium touches like 12 speaker Canton sound system, Dynamic chassis control, and heated front and rear seats. The overall feel is one of neat,

modern luxury - not flashy but smart.

On Dublin’s winding roads and city centre street, the Superb Sportline PHEV drove like a true all-rounder. The ride is composed, with the suspension smoothing bumps while the steering stays responsive. Electric mode delivers smooth, silent acceleration, and the petrol engine slips in seamlessly at higher speeds. While not a sports car, its 8-second-ish 0–100 km/h pace is brisk for an estate of this size. Fuel consumption hovered around 5 L/100 km on mixed routes—a testament to how efficient hybrids can be when the battery is used well. In petrol-only mode, consumption still remained respectable.

Whether I plugged in at a public rapid charger or overnight at home, charging was confidently reliable. The 50 kW DC quick charge got me from near-empty to almost full in just over 25 minutes—perfect for a coffee stop en route. With a healthy real-world EV range and practical charging figures, I had little concern about range on mixed driving days.

Škoda Ireland offers attractive trim levels across the PHEV range (1.5TSI 200hp DSG), with the Sportline we drove priced at €55,790. Other options include the baseline Selection priced at €50,865 and the more plush Selection Plus €53,365. A luxurious Laurin & Klement version tops the range at €60,335, featuring every comfort and tech upgrade imaginable. Annual motor tax sits at a low €120, making it cost-effective for both private and company use. There is a 1.5TSI 150hp DSG mHEV Petrol model priced from €51,365 and a Diesel/HVO 2.0TDI 150hp DSG priced from €51,865.

Conclusion

The 2025 Škoda Superb Combi Sportline PHEV strikes a rare balance: electrified efficiency, everyday usability, and polished on-road performance - all wrapped in understated style and carrying capacity to match. From €50,865, it offers compelling value and stands out as a top pick among large estates in Ireland. If you want a car that answers all the questions - space, comfort, tech, and economy - this Superb Combi has them all covered.

There’s a quiet revolution happening in the electric vehicle world, and XPENG is right at the heart of it. Their new G6 SUV arrives with bold ambitions — to take on the likes of the Tesla Model Y — and after spending a day behind the wheel, it’s clear this is a car that means business.

The XPENG G6 cuts a striking figure on the road. Its low-slung, coupe-like silhouette gives it a sleek, modern stance, while the flowing bodywork feels clean and purposeful. At the front, a single slim LED light bar stretches across the nose, matched by sharp headlights tucked low into the bumper. The styling isn’t aggressive, but it’s confident — the kind of design that feels aerodynamic by nature rather than necessity. A very low drag coefficient of 0.248 proves the G6 is about more than just good looks; it’s been built with efficiency in mind.

From the side, the tapered roofline and sculpted wheel arches create a muscular profile, and the flush door handles add to the car’s slippery appearance. The design is cohesive and well-resolved, suggesting XPENG has skipped the awkward early steps that have tripped up some newer brands.

Underneath, the G6 rides on XPENG’s next-generation SEPA 2.0 platform - a dedicated EV architecture engineered for flexibility and speed. The 800-volt electrical system is one of the most impressive technical highlights. It means this SUV can recharge from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes when connected to a high-power charger - putting it firmly among the fastest-charging EVs on sale today.

Equipped with an alluring range of new features and new ‘know-how’ – much of it a product of their widespread use of AI technology in its development – the G6 Coupé SUV comes in three model variants: a ‘Standard’ range model and a ‘Long Range’ model (both with rear-wheel drive), and a ‘Performance’ model (with permanent all-wheel drive). The Performance model will arrive here in Q3 of this year with both Standard and Long Range models available now for customer delivery. Rear-wheel drive Standard and Long Range versions are powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor with 0-100km/ h times rated at 6.9 seconds and 6.7 seconds respectively.

G6 Standard Range models (190 kW/258 hp, 440 Nm) are powered by a 66kWh battery pack with a 435 km WLTP driving range, while the Long Range and all-wheel drive Performance versions with their larger 87.5kWh batteries

have a longer WLTP range of up to 570kms on a full charge.

In addition, Performance units have 0-100kms/h acceleration of just 4.1 seconds helped by an additional electric front wheel motor that boosts output to a combined 476 hp. Optional on all models is an electrically deployable towbar with a towable capacity of 1,500 kgs.

Step inside, and the G6 reveals a cabin that blends simplicity with high-end functionality. There’s a real sense of space, amplified by a vast panoramic glass roof and a minimalist dashboard layout dominated by a 15-inch central touchscreen. It controls everything from navigation to climate settings, yet the system feels intuitive rather than overwhelming.

In front of the driver sits a crisp digital instrument cluster, and beneath the central screen are twin wireless charging pads for smartphones, complete with cooling fans to pre-

vent overheating. Materials throughout the cabin feel solid, with a choice of understated leatherette finishes and thoughtful touches like heated and ventilated front seats, a premium 18-speaker sound system, and ample storage solutions.

Rear-seat passengers are equally well catered for, with generous legroom, supportive seats, and optional heated cushions. The flat floor and wide-opening doors make the back seats feel particularly airy and easy to access.

Out on the road, the G6 is a polished performer. In rear-drive form, it offers a satisfying balance of brisk acceleration and confident handling. The steering is light but precise, making city driving easy, yet there’s enough feedback to inspire confidence on winding country roads.

Even when pushed hard, the G6 maintains composure, thanks in part to its low centre of gravity and well-judged suspension setup. Some sharper bumps at low speeds

do make their presence felt, but for the most part, ride comfort is excellent, especially at motorway cruising speeds. Noise insulation is another strong point. The cabin remains impressively quiet, with little wind or road noise penetrating the interior, contributing to the G6’s calm and composed demeanour.

XPENG is keen to position itself at the cutting edge of EV tech, and the G6 reflects that ambition. Alongside the slick infotainment system, drivers benefit from a comprehensive suite of driver aids. XPENG’s latest semi-autonomous system offers adaptive cruise control, automatic lane changes, and smart navigation, although in Ireland full hands-off driving remains some way off regulatory approval.

The G6 is also fitted with multiple cameras, radars, and a LiDAR system, offering a 360-degree view of surroundings — ideal for tight city parking or added motorway safety. And with over-the-air software updates, owners can expect ongoing improvements long after they’ve left the showroom.

For all its futuristic credentials, the G6 remains eminently practical. The boot offers 571 litres of space with the seats up, expanding to 1,374 litres when folded. Wide rear doors, thoughtful storage cubbies, and energy-efficient features like a heat-pump system make it ideal for Irish winters.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

The SUV’s charging capabilities also make it a great companion for long trips, with real-world range figures coming impressively close to official claims.

Launching at what MDL director, Ciaran Allen calls “a compellingly competitive price structure and overall value proposition”, that MDL says takes full account of the model offering itself, and of market conditions generally and the overriding national objective to expand EV ownership, models come on the market from €42,000 (Standard) and €49,440 (Long Range) inclusive of all EV grants and incentives.

Conclusion

The XPENG G6 doesn’t just aim at the Tesla Model Y — it genuinely competes. Sleek, spacious, fast-charging, and rewarding to drive, it proves that Chinese brands are not just catching up to global standards — in many cases, they’re leading the way.

In a market where buyers are increasingly savvy and demand more for their money, the G6’s combination of design, technology, and value feels like a winning formula. And for those willing to step outside the traditional premium brands, XPENG’s arrival looks set to shake up the Irish EV market in a very real way.

MG ZS HYBRID+

The MG ZS Hybrid arrives in Ireland blending smart styling, impressive tech, and family-friendly practicality.

“All ZS Hybrid+ models get the MG Pilot suite of driver assistance systems.”

There’s something satisfying about a car that knows exactly what it is - and the new MG ZS Hybrid+ is one of them. MG’s latest take on the compact SUV isn’t trying to be flash or fussy. Instead, it delivers a blend of practicality, tech, and hybrid efficiency that Irish buyers are crying out for right now. Having spent a week with the range-topping Exclusive model, I came away impressed by how far this brand has come and how much value this SUV delivers.

The latest ZS has grown up in every sense. It’s 10 cm longer than the previous version, has a sharper design, and has a broad grille that gives it a purposeful stance on the road. On my test car, finished in Diamond Red metallic, the chrome roof rails, privacy glass and LED signature lights made it look far more expensive than its sub - €34,000 price tag suggests.

MG’s designers have done just enough to make this B-SUV stand out from a crowd full of big names like the Toyota Yaris Cross and Renault Captur. It’s not ostentatious, but it does have presence—and that’s exactly what you want at this level.

Climb aboard the Exclusive trim and it’s clear this isn’t the MG of old. The cabin feels airy and very well put together. Heated leather-style seats, a heated steering wheel, and an electric driver’s seat with lumbar support are all standard on this model - luxuries usually reserved for premium marques.

Space is generous, with rear legroom that can easily cope with growing teenagers and a boot that holds 443 litres with the seats up or 1,457 litres with them folded. I found the driving position spot on for long motorway stints, while the panoramic view out of the windscreen made threading through Dublin’s narrow inner city streets stress-free.

MG has also upped its tech game. In the Exclusive model, you get a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen running MG’s latest infotainment software, paired with a 7-inch digital driver display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, and everything responds quickly and cleanly to inputs.

Unlike some rivals that bury simple functions in submenus, the ZS Hybrid+ keeps essential controls like climate easy to find. It’s a system that feels well thought-out for real-world use, which is refreshing.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 100 kW electric motor and 45 kW generator, giving a combined output of 196 hp and 465 Nm of torque. That’s fed to the wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission.

On the road, the ZS Hybrid+ surprised me. Around town, it glides silently on electric power alone, feeling more like an EV at low speeds. When the petrol engine does cut in, it does so quietly and without any of the jerky transitions you sometimes get in budget hybrids. It’s a “self-charging” hybrid, so there’s no need to plug in - just drive, and let the car handle the rest.

Performance is respectable for the class. It’ll do 0–100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, with strong mid-range pull when overtaking. During my week of mixed driving, I averaged just under 6 L/100 km - not far off MG’s claimed 5.1 L/100 km.

The ride is another highlight. It’s supple over rough backroads yet composed on motorways, and while it won’t excite keen drivers, it feels stable and secure, which is exactly what family buyers want.

MG hasn’t skimped on safety either. All ZS Hybrid+ mo-

dels get the MG Pilot suite of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blindspot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic emergency braking.

On the Exclusive trim, a 360-degree camera system comes as standard. It’s a lifesaver in tight urban car parks and helped make my time with the car noticeably less stressful in Dublin city centre. The LED headlights are bright and auto-dipping, adding further to its ease of use at night.

Euro NCAP rates the ZS at four stars, which feels fair for this segment, and MG’s standard seven-year/150,000 km warranty provides added peace of mind.

Irish Pricing and Trims: Outstanding Value

The 2025 MG ZS Hybrid+ is available in three trims in Ireland:

• Exclusive (€33,995): Brings heated leather-style seats,

electric driver seat, privacy glass, 360° camera, and 18” alloys.

My test car, the Exclusive, came in at €33,995 before delivery, with dealer promotions potentially bringing it down closer to €32,500. Considering the level of kit and hybrid efficiency, it’s incredible value.

Conclusion

The MG ZS Hybrid+ surprised me in the best possible way. It’s refined, practical, and packed with features that make family life easier. While it doesn’t have the badge appeal of Toyota or Hyundai, the ZS more than makes up for it with its blend of comfort, hybrid efficiency and sharp pricing.

For Irish buyers looking for a no-nonsense compact SUV that feels premium without the premium price, this ZS deserves to be on your shortlist. MG might have been seen as a budget brand in the past, but cars like this show they’re ready to take on the big names.
