Our cover car this issue is the impressive BMW M5. The 2025 M5 debuts a plug-in hybrid power-train — a first for the badge — and it’s far from an afterthought. The engineering team has gone to great lengths to maintain M’s traditional ethos while injecting future-focused technology. The result? A combined 727 horsepower and a mammoth 1,000 Nm of torque, courtesy of a reworked 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 working in concert with a rear-mounted electric motor embedded in the 8-speed gearbox.

This hybrid isn’t about sipping fuel — it’s about sharpening the edge. The immediate torque of the electric motor fills in the gaps, offering seamless response when you bury the throttle.

It’s particularly useful in the midrange, where the electric boost feels like you’ve downshifted without touching the paddle.

The battery — an 18.6kWh unit — is nestled low and central to keep the centre of gravity in check. It allows for up to 69 km of all-electric driving, which isn’t groundbreaking, but for short city commutes it’s more than enough. This new BMW M5 is available in Ireland with a starting price of approximately €137,045. This marks a reduction in price of around €60,000 compared to the previous gene- ration, primarily due to the introduction of a plug-in hybrid powertrain that lowers CO2 emissions to 37–39g/km, thereby reducing the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT).

NEWS JEEP AVENGER 4XE HYBRID

T

he new Jeep Avenger 4xe stands out with a design that perfectly balances elegance and ruggedness. The exterior has been reinforced to ensure complete protection in all driving scenarios. Key enhancements include new front anti scratch bumpers, specific fog lights design, roof rails for additional cargo options and all-season Mud & Snow tyres.

At its heart lies the innovative powertrain that seamlessly blends hybrid efficiency with cutting-edge AWD technology.

With a 48V hybrid system, featuring a robust 1.2-litre turbo engine generating 136hp, augmented by dual 21Kw electric motors positioned both at the front and rear, this advanced

powertrain delivers a seamless blend of efficiency and performance, and a combined power of 145 hp, ensuring high-level driving experiences both on and off the road.

Inside, the cabin is also a celebration of the natural world. The dashboard incorporates topographic lines, with a silhouette of Mont Blanc and the inscription One of 4806 proudly displayed below the Avenger logo, emphasising the limited edition’s connection to the peak’s height. The custom floor mats are designed with 3D mountain ranges, offering passengers a literal foothold on nature. Jeep Ireland has not yet confirmed how much the 4xe versions of the Avenger will cost, but pricing is likely to be revealed closer to the order books opening at the end of this year.

T

he new electric Renault 4 made its Irish debut recently. It is the second EV from the French brand to be inspired by older Renault models, following on from the much anticipated new Renault 5.

The original Renault 4 was launched in the early sixties as a practical and affordable family car for the masses, and this new electric version takes both design and practicality cues from it - with a unique single piece illuminated grille, a modern reinvention of the three-part rear lights, and countless other touches.

Available to order in Ireland for the 252-registration period, the new Renault 4 E-Tech electric will be offered with the choice of a 52 kWh battery with 150 hp motor and a WLTP range of up

to 409km, or a 40 kWh battery and 120 hp motor with a WLTP range of 308km with heat pump on both. The 11 kW AC bi-directional charger is combined with DC charging of 100 kW for the 52 kWh car and 80 kW for the 40 kWh car.

There will be three trim levels to choose from - ‘evolution’, ‘techno’ and ‘iconic’ - with all versions of the new Renault 4 coming with 18-inch wheels and a comprehensive suite of safety tech, such as Active Driver Assist for level 2 assisted driving, 26 driving aids, rear occupant safe exit alert, and ‘My Safety Switch’.

A total of seven body colours are going to be offered, as well as a range of exterior personalisation options for the roof, bonnet, wings and front and rear bumper stops. Irish pricing is yet to be announced.

AUDI A6 E-TRON he all-new, fully electric Audi A6 e-tron has arrived in Ireland. The Audi A6 e-tron is the first fully electric Audi model available as a Sportback and Avant. . The Audi A6 e-tron offers up to 751 kms^ range and 310 kms recharge in just 10 minutes*. Sporty, active driving dynamics, highly developed system efficiency and therefore perfect long-distance capability.

A progressive and purist design based very closely on the sensational concept car and numerous technical innovations. Outstanding aerodynamics: with its exceptionally low drag coefficient (cd) of 0.21, the Audi A6 Sportback e-tron is the most aerodynamic Audi of all time.

Recently the second Audi model built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the all-new Audi A6 e-tron, was presented locally at the Irish national launch in the Grain Store, Killruddery. Those in attendance were treated to a presentation of Audi’s electrification roadmap by Audi Ireland Brand Director, Christian Gussen, followed by an in-depth Product presentation of the Audi A6 e-tron. The launch coincided with the announcement that the Audi A6 e-tron has been awarded the highest safety rating of 5 stars by Euro NCAP. The Audi A6 e-tron joins the Audi Q6 e-tron (the first model built on the PPE) with the impressive 5 star safety rating. The Audi A6 Sportback e-tron pricing starts from €74,500 and is now available to order in Ireland.

Commenting on the Audi A6 e-tron at the local launch, Audi Ireland Brand Director, Christian Gussen, said: “The fully electric Audi A6 e-tron is an incredible model family, and includes the most aerodynamic Audi ever built. YD has further expanded its presence in Ireland with the arrival of their fifth model in two years – the sporty new mid-size BYD Sealion 7 SUV, now available through dealers in a choice of three fully electric powered mo-

dels.

Entry to the BYD Sealion 7 range begins with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive ‘Comfort’ edition, followed by two all-wheel-drive models: ‘Design’ and ‘Excellence’, each fitted with a rich selection of all-inclusive standard specifications. Prices begin from €45,435 for the entry-level Comfort model.

TOYOTA IRELAND TOPS FIRST QUARTER CAR SALES

T

oyota Ireland is once again the best-selling car brand for the first quarter of 2025, marking its fifth consecutive year at the top, with a market share of 15.1%. Toyota sold 9,755 passenger cars from January 1st to March 31st, a gap of over 3,000 units between Toyota and its closest competitor. Four Toyota models featured in the top ten best-selling passenger cars, the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid, and Toyota C-HR Hybrid, all of which posted impressive numbers.

Electrified driving continues to dominate over petrol, with 55.41% of passenger vehicles sold in Q1 being Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid or Battery Electric vehicles. The ‘best of both worlds’ Plug-In Hybrid options continue to grow in popularity in 2025 and are now Ireland’s fastest growing powertrain, with sales increasing by 61.28% compared to Q1 2024.

Diesel sales continue to decline, with only 10,848 units sold in the first three months of 2025, compared to 2024, representing a 24.98% decrease. On the other hand, with a 25.84% increase in market share, Battery Electric Vehicles made early strides in Q1 2025, achieving 9,978 sales compared to 7,929 in Q1 2024. Consumer choice is set to increase with Toyota’s announcement of

an exciting new all-electric model. The Toyota C-HR+ is set to arrive on Irish soil at the end of the year, adding to the already stellar electrified fleet.

Speaking about the latest figures, Zoë Bradley, Head of Marketing Communications and Corporate Affairs in Toyota Ireland said: “The increase in electrified sales continues to demonstrate Irish drivers’ desire to transition to more sustainable models—and that they trust Toyota for this journey. ew badges in the automotive world carry the weight of the M5. Over decades, it’s evolved from a stealthy autobahn-stormer to a full-on executive super saloon.

Now, in 2025, BMW has thrown out the old rulebook and brought the M5 roaring into a new era — and this time, it’s part electric. But make no mistake, this isn’t any ordinary hybrid. It’s still an M car at heart — only sharper, smarter, and more muscular than ever before.

After driving the new model, I can say with confidence: this hybrid M5 doesn’t dilute the formula.

It refines it. From the moment you clock it in the mirror, the 2025 M5 announces its intent. It’s bigger and broader than its predecessor, with swollen arches and a lower, wider stance that visually lowers its centre of gravity. The front end is all menace — that squared-off kidney grille is slightly toned down from some of BMW’s bolder designs, but it’s flanked by menacing LED lights and aggressively chiseled air intakes that don’t just look the part — they function to channel air and cool vital components.

Along the sides, muscular creases run through the bodywork like flexed tendons. The staggered wheels — 20 inches up front, 21 in the rear — sit flush with the arches, and the widened track (notably 76mm broader at the front) gives the car a planted look that backs up its performance credentials. At the back, a sculpted diffuser houses the now-iconic quad pipes, while slim, horizontal tail lamps keep the design crisp.

Climb inside, and the cabin immediately feels premium — not in the sterile, minimalist way some modern luxury saloons have gone, but in a purposeful, performance-oriented sense. The highlight is the curved display unit, a wraparound digital dashboard that blends a 12.3-inch digital cluster with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. It’s slick, fast, and full of high-end graphics, powered by BMW’s iDrive 8.5 system. While there’s a slight learning curve with all the menus, the customisability is impressive. Once you get used to the layout, it feels like the command centre of something special.

The new flat-bottomed steering wheel deserves its own praise — chunky, contoured, with M-mode buttons and paddle shifters right where you want them. It feels like a proper piece of equipment, not a design flourish. The seats are, unsurprisingly, excellent. Deep bolsters keep you locked in during spirited driving, but they’re still plush enough for cross-country cruising. There’s a healthy mix of Merino leather, Alcantara, and carbon-fibre trim throughout, and even the ambient lighting has a subtle sophistication. This isn’t just a fast car; it’s a seriously comfortable one.

Turn the wheel in town, and the M5 feels surprisingly tame. The steering is light, the ride is compliant (thanks

to the adaptive M suspension), and in full electric mode, it glides around silently — a strange experience for an M5, but oddly satisfying. Switch into Hybrid or Sport mode, and the transformation is instant. The throttle sharpens, the V8 bellows into life, and the electric boost kicks in with real urgency. There’s no drama in how it builds speed — it’s almost unnerving how linear it is. This is a 2.4-tonne car that hits 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Let that sink in.

Power exits are ferocious, but always controllable thanks to the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

And yet, despite the weight, it’s agile. Rear-wheel steering helps immensely here, making tight bends feel like corners in a much smaller coupe. The steering is communicative — not overly heavy, but precise — and the car rotates with real confidence. Mid-corner bumps don’t unsettle it.

BMW purists may raise an eyebrow at the hybrid badge, but after spending time with this new M5, it’s clear this isn’t some compromise on tradition — it’s an evolution.

The extra weight is there, yes, but the payoff is massive: more power, more precision, and an extra dimension of

MASERATI GT2 STRADALE

ALFA ROMEO JUNIOR IBRIDA

rices for the hybrid version of the Alfa Romeo Junior, the Ibrida, have been announced for the Irish Market, with the base price matching that of the Electric version which was officially launched in Ireland last month. Already available in full electric 156hp or 280hp electric powertrains, Alfa Romeo is now giving customers full freedom of choice on the configuration that best meets their mobility needs and personal tastes, without sacrificing the values of sportiness and efficiency inherent in the brand’s DNA. The new Junior Speciale Ibrida offers a 136-hp 48-V Hybrid VGT (Variable-Geometry Turbo) powertrain. The electrical component consists of a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a 21-kW electric motor built into the innovative 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which works together with the inverter and transmission control unit to ensure maximum efficiency. Junior Ibrida offers

an extremely smooth driving experience to move around urban areas in electric mode more than 50% of the time. Electric driving is not only possible during parking manoeuvres or at low speeds, but also out of town with a limited load at up to 150 km/h.

Ibrida features the distinctive Leggenda scudetto grille, 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, LED headlamps and taillamps, gloss black mirror covers, rain sensing wipers, rear parking sensors and keyless go. Inside, it features Icona seats with black/blue cloth, eight-colour ambient lighting marking out the air vents, central tunnel, 10.25-inch configurable Cannocchiale instrument cluster, 10.25-inch driver oriented central screen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and 60/40 folding rear seats. Prices for the Junior Ibrida in Ireland will start at €34,995 which is the same price as the fully electric “Elettrica” version.

DENZA Z9 GT s the European EV landscape heats up, Chinese automaker BYD is making a bold move - this time with its premium sub-brand, Denza. Set to land on European shores soon, Denza is clearly aiming to shake up the high-end segment, and if their flagship Z9 GT is anything to go by, they might just succeed.

hen Audi first unveiled the A5, it struck a careful balance between elegance and everyday usability.

Fast-forward to 2025, and this latest generation of the A5—particularly the diesel-powered variant I recently spent time with—demonstrates how far that formula has evolved without losing sight of its core appeal. What we have here is a modern, confident take on the executive car, one that blends subtle sportiness with technology and practicality in a way that feels remarkably refined.

Let’s start with the looks. Audi hasn’t gone wild with the A5’s design, and I think that’s to its credit. There’s a quiet assertiveness to the new bodywork. At the front, the wider Single frame grille is less aggressive than some rivals but gives the car a muscular, planted stance. Flanking the grille are crisply drawn LED headlights with razor-sharp detailing, and the bonnet carries a subtle sculpted contour that adds a layer of depth without shouting about it.

Around the back, Audi has done away with fuss in favour of a clean, techy finish. A slim, full-width light bar ties the rear end together, and integrated exhaust surrounds remind you that this is still a diesel—one that doesn’t feel the need to pretend otherwise. It’s modern, but not trendy. And in this class, that counts.

This new A5 is underpinned by Audi’s revised combustion-platform architecture—one designed from the ground up to offer better balance and accommodate the brand’s range of engines and tech features. The result is a car that feels more solid, more connected, and—critically—more agile than its predecessor.

In my week with the diesel model, what stood out most was how naturally everything flowed together. The car feels incredibly well sorted. Whether on a winding back road or slipping quietly through city traffic, the A5 manages to feel light on its feet without sacrificing the kind of ride comfort that buyers in this segment expect.

Our test car featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine paired with Audi’s familiar seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. It’s a powertrain combo that prioritises smooth delivery over outright drama—and it works beautifully.

There’s a healthy slab of torque available from low down, making overtakes effortless and motorway cruising a relaxed affair. The dual-clutch box shifts crisply when you need it to but fades into the background in daily driving. And despite being diesel, it’s impressively quiet inside the cabin—even under load.

Of course, the efficiency is a key selling point. Across a mix of urban, motorway, and rural driving, I returned an average just shy of 5.2 L/100km—more than acceptable for a car of this size and refinement.

Audi’s interiors have always had a reputation for design and quality, and this latest A5 takes that legacy into the digital 32

AUDI A5 age. The cabin is built around what Audi calls its “Digital Stage,” anchored by a bright and responsive 11.9-inch instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch centre touchscreen.

Unlike some setups, though, this one doesn’t overwhelm.

The menus are intuitive, the responses are fast, and crucially, Audi has kept some physical controls for key functions—thankfully.

Material quality remains top-notch. Soft-touch surfaces, brushed metallic accents, and plush seat materials all give the A5 a premium feel. Our test car came with supportive sports seats wrapped in a high-grade leather-alternative trim, and the driver’s seat offered enough adjustment to find a perfect position within minutes.

Space is generous up front, and the rear seats are surprisingly usable—even for adults. Thanks to its Sportback-style liftback design, the boot is cavernous and easily accessible. For business users or small families, it strikes an ideal balance between style and everyday usability.

Tech lovers will appreciate the A5’s generous equipment list. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, as does a digital assistant that actually works without repeated prompts. Audi’s voice controls are among the better ones out there—quick to respond, and able to manage everything from navigation to temperature control.

A standout feature in our test car was the sound system.

The audio quality was sensational, with crisp highs, rich bass, and a sense of space that filled the cabin effortlessly.

Even at motorway speeds, the refinement was such that

you could enjoy every note without background noise interrupting.

Driver-assist features include adaptive cruise, lane-keeping assist, and a highly intuitive parking system with surround cameras. It’s not overloaded with semi-autonomous fluff—it’s the kind of thoughtful, helpful tech that makes your life easier behind the wheel.

On the road is where the A5 diesel really makes its mark.

It’s not a sports car, but it handles with a quiet competence that’s deeply satisfying. The steering is nicely weighted and accurate, and the suspension—particularly with adaptive dampers fitted—smooths out rough roads while still keeping things composed when cornering.

There’s a clear sense that the A5 is working with you rather than trying to insulate you from the driving experience entirely. For long journeys, it’s supremely comfortable. For more spirited moments, it’s willing and composed.

After spending a few days with the new Explorer EV, it’s clear that this isn’t just an electrified version - it’s an entirely new experience that still manages to feel unmistakably Explorer.

From the moment you lay eyes on it, the Explorer makes a strong first impression. It’s bold and athletic without going overboard—clearly designed to be practical for families but still sharp enough to stand out at the school run or on a weekend road trip.

Materials throughout the cabin feel solid and well-considered. Even the base trim gets soft-touch surfaces, while higher trims introduce vegan leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and a panoramic roof that brings in lots of natural light.

There’s ample space for passengers front and rear. Boot space is generous and well-shaped, offering enough room

By 2016, the fourth-generation Scenic transitioned towards a more crossover-inspired look, integrating SUV-like styling elements while retaining its MPV functionality.

Now, in 2025, Renault has completely reinvented the Scenic as the Scenic E-Tech Electric, marking its shift from a traditional MPV to a fully electric family SUV. Visually, the Macan 4 walks the line between evolutionary and revolutionary. You won’t mistake it for anything other than a Porsche, but there’s a newfound sleekness to the proportions.

The nose is low and tightly sculpted, flanked by four-point LED lighting elements that give it an unmistakable signature. Air curtains built into the front bumper guide airflow with surgical precision, not just for show but to trim drag.

In profile, the car appears more hunkered down than its predecessor. A steeper rear window and frameless door glass create a more coupe-like silhouette, but it still carries itself with SUV presence. Around the back, a full-width light bar echoes other Porsche EVs, but here it’s punctuated by a sharper slope and a bold 3D Porsche logo that lights up.

It’s a clean design, modern without gimmicks.

Underneath, this isn’t a modified ICE platform— it’s an all-new electric architecture dubbed the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). Developed in collaboration with Audi, it’s been optimised for performance, efficiency, and future scalability.

Powering the Macan 4 is a dual-motor setup producing 402 horsepower and maximum torque of 650Nm. That may sound tame next to Porsche’s louder performance numbers, but make no mistake—this SUV moves. With the grip of all-wheel drive and the immediate torque delivery inherent to EVs, 0–100km/h arrives in just 5.2 seconds. More importantly, it feels ready to leap forward at any speed.

architecture supports up to 270 kW of fast charging, meaning you can jump from 10% to 80% battery in about 22 minutes under ideal conditions. Range varies depending on wheels and trim, but Porsche is targeting over 600 kilometres on the more efficient variants.

still exist where they matter—climate dials, the drive selector, and a smattering of buttons on the sporty steering wheel. There’s an optional passenger display as well, which remains invisible to the driver thanks to a polarisation layer—clever, and refreshingly unobtrusive.

Crucially, the regenerative braking system is tuned to feel natural. You get strong recuperation without the sudden jolt that plagues lesser EVs, and you can tailor the level to suit your mood.

The head-up display is among the best I’ve seen. It projects crisp, floating graphics that feel genuinely useful, including turn-by-turn instructions that appear to hover above the road itself. It’s like driving with augmented reality baked in.

Step inside the Macan 4 and you’re greeted by a cockpit that feels thoroughly modern but unmistakably Porsche.

A curved 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster dominates the driver’s view, flanked by a responsive 10.9-inch central touchscreen. The interface is fast, intuitive, and visually cohesive.

What stands out, though, is how Porsche has balanced digital minimalism with tactile quality. Physical controls

Seats are firm but supportive, with Porsche’s typical range of adjustability. Materials lean upscale, with brushed metal, Alcantara, and optional sustainable upholstery choices. There’s more room than in the outgoing Macan, especially in the back, thanks to the EV layout. And the front frunk adds useful daily practicality.

is how it drives. You expect power and smoothness in an EV. What you don’t always get is feedback. The Macan 4 delivers it in spades.

Steering is light but direct, and you can feel the chassis communicating through the wheel as you tip into corners.

The adaptive air suspension smooths out rough roads without sacrificing control, and in Sport mode, the Macan tightens up like a sports saloon. You can really lean on it—something rare in the electric SUV space.

The weight, which all EVs carry, is managed brilliantly. You never feel like you’re wrestling a heavy machine. Instead, the Macan pivots and changes direction with a confidence that makes you want to push harder. Brake feel is also worth mentioning—linear and consistent, even with regen doing some of the work behind the scenes.

Put simply, this is the most engaging electric SUV I’ve driven in quite a while. Not the fastest, perhaps—but the most cohesive. I wouldn’t have liked more time behind the wheel to really get to grips with it day to day but it

definitely impressed.

As a stylish counterpart to the recently introduced Smart #1, this model continues the brand’s evolution in the premium all-electric vehicle market.

The design of the smart #3 is defined by seamless, smooth lines and athletic curves, aimed at enhancing its aerodynamic performance. The body is further accentuated with numerous design details. At the front, slimmed down CyberSparks LED headlights are paired with a distinctive “shark nose” and A-shape wide grill. On the sides, the prominent two-tone roof meets the smooth, continuous e-line that connects the A-pillar and C-pillar, creating an elegant sporty silhouette.
