Our cover car this issue is the impressive Lamborghini Temerario. The Temerario is equipped with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine paired with three electric motors, delivering a combined power output of 920 CV. This revolutionary powertrain enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed exceeding 340 km/h (210+ mph). The V8 engine, capable of revving up to 10,000 rpm, provides seamless linear acceleration and unmatched responsiveness. The heart of the Temerario’s innovation lies in its advanced hybrid system.

The V8 engine, delivering 800 CV, is complemented by an axial flux electric motor housed within the engine. Two additional electric motors on the front axle provide torque vectoring, enhance agility, and enable all-wheel drive capabilities. This configuration allows for unparalleled handling and stability across diverse driving conditions.

The new engine with the internal designation L411 is now one of the most powerful engines in the segment. The V8 biturbo delivers its peak power of 800 CV from 9,000 to 9,750 rpm and 730 Nm of torque between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm. The electric motor, in P1 position (between the V8 engine and the gearbox), ensures immediate response starting from low engine speed and continues consistently through gear shifts, working as a “torque gap filler” and improving the transient response, giving the sensation of linear and limitless progression up to 10,000 revs. Thanks to the two large turbochargers, efficiency and performance are increased at top speeds. These are located compactly in the V of the engine as a “hot V8” to optimise the packaging and thermal management. The V8 biturbo can rev up to 10,000 revolutions per minute: the maximum boost pressure of the turbochargers is 2.5 bar (abs). The turbines are controlled with an electrical wastegate and a wheel-speed sensor. Lamborghini has designed air filter boxes with tubular cartridges, making them extremely compact to create space and become even more efficient.

NEWS AUDI Q6 SPORTBACK E-TRON

A

udi continues to expand its electric model portfolio with the Q6 Sportback e-tron.

Thanks to its dynamic rear and the resulting aerodynamic benefits, the Q6 Sportback e-tron performance is the range champion in the Q6 series, with a range of up to 656

kilometres*.

The Q6 Sportback e-tron and the SQ6 Sportback e-tron are manufactured under net carbon-neutral conditions at Audi’s main plant in Ingolstadt. They are currently available to order.

The entry-level model, the Q6 Sportback e-tron with the 83 kWh (net: 75.8 kWh) battery and rear-wheel drive, starts at €77,900. The rear-wheel drive Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron per-

formance starts at €83,600. The Q6 Sportback e-tron quattro starts at €90,200, and the SQ6 Sportback e-tron starts at €109,835.

n 2024, Volvo Cars announced that the fully electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models were being renamed to EX40 and EC40 respectively, seamlessly fitting in with our other fully electric models: the EX30 and EX90, as well as the ES90 which is being launched this year.

The new and streamlined model name standard makes it even easier for existing and new customers to understand which of our models are fully electric and which are hybrids, as they shop for a new Volvo Car. As part of this update, we are introducing a new performance software pack for our EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants. The Performance software pack, which increases power output by 25kW for faster acceleration, also includes unique

pedal mapping for quicker accelerator response and a unique ‘Performance’ drive mode to unlock the full 325kW. The Performance software will be offered as an optional upgrade pack via the Volvo Cars app when ordering a new car, while drivers of previous model year 2024 C40 and fully electric XC40 Recharge cars can purchase and download the software from the comfort of their homes.

Also, we’re introducing a special Black Edition of the EX40 and EC40 following the success of our XC60 Black Edition launched last year. The Black Edition models come with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss and a microtech charcoal interior.

The EC40 and EX40 are as compelling as ever, with Google built-in and smart interior storage. MERCEDES-BENZ VITO WINS 2025 IRISH VAN OF THE YEAR AWARD he Mercedes-Benz Vito has been voted the Irish Van of the Year 2025, in association with Continental Tyres. Voted on by a jury of thirteen of Ireland’s most experienced commercial vehicle journalists drawn from the Motoring Media Association of Ireland (MMAI), the annual Irish Van of the Year Award acknowledges productivity, safety, comfort and fuel efficiency in the latest commercial vehicle technologies.

Chairman of the MMAI, Daragh Keany, commented: “Congratulations to the Mercedes-Benz team on the win for the new Vito. The Vito beat 31 other van models in what was a bumper year for new van launches and while all of those other models are great vehicles, the Vito just had the edge that got it over the line. Our judges commended this new version of the Vito for its great on-board technologies, practicality, and its safety and driver assistance systems”.

RENAULT SCENIC E-TECH ELECTRIC TAKES IRISH CAR OF THE YEAR TITLE

A

t a gala awards ceremony this afternoon in the Conrad Hotel in Dublin, the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric was named as the 2025 Irish Car of the Year in association with Continental Tyres.

Members of the Motoring Media Association of Ireland (MMAI), the grouping that brings together more than 30 of Ireland’s most experienced motoring journalists, hosted the awards event attended by Ireland’s leading car brands, importers and distributors. The awards are voted on by the members of the MMAI who individually assess each new car model that is launched in Ireland each year.

It is the fifth year in a row that an all electric vehicle has been voted the Irish Car of the Year, the oldest and most reputable automotive award title in Ireland.

Chairman of the MMAI, Daragh Keany said: “Well done to Renault. This latest model is the fifth generation Scenic and the first full electric version. Our jurors were very impressed with the driving dynamics of the vehicle, the stylish design and the very generous 430km or long range 625km model with 220 horsepower, definitely a very worthy winner of the Irish Car of the Year title.”

THE ALL-NEW ŠKODA ELROQ

C

urtains up for the first of its kind: the all-new Škoda Elroq is the Czech brand’s first all-electric model in the strategically important compact SUV category. It is also the first model to adopt Škoda’s new Modern Solid design language, combining robustness, functionality and authenticity. The Elroq offers a comprehensive line-up of powertrain and battery options, with a maximum range of over 560 kilometres. Its extensive standard equipment includes a rear‑view camera, Crew Protect Assist, Side Assist, 13-inch infotainment and SmartLink. This combination makes the Elroq the most affordable electric vehicle in its segment, with a starting price of €36,545 after rebates and delivery charges are applied. As a result, the Škoda Elroq is priced below, its similarly sized Karoq ICE counterpart in the Škoda portfolio in the Irish market.

Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto, says: “The Škoda Elroq is our first BEV model in the compact SUV class, the fastest-growing and most popular sub-segment in Europe. I know which one I’d choose” Modern Solid: Tech-Deck Face with a new interpretation of familiar Škoda lines The exterior of the Elroq is defined by a distinctive shape and clean lines, making it the first Škoda model to adopt the new Modern Solid design language. Looking at traditional Škoda design elements from an entirely new perspective, the glossy black Tech-Deck Face replaces the typical Škoda grille, while still referencing familiar Škoda lines. The new front is also characterised by a robust front bumper with a Unique Dark Chrome insert, while the hallmark Škoda SUV “four eyes” headlights graphic has been completely reinterpreted. The Elroq is also the first model to feature the Škoda lettering on both the bonnet and steering wheel. The Elroq features an exceptionally aerodynamic body, boasting a drag coefficient of just 0.26. This

is achieved through a range of innovative design elements, enabling a top speed of 180 km/h.

Wide choice of powertrains, long range and short charging times The Škoda Elroq is available with three different battery sizes and powertrains. Outputs start at 125 kW for the entry-level Elroq 50 model from €36,545 with a range of 370 kilometres WLTP. Elroq 60 has a range of 440 kilometres and is priced from €38,416. The long range Elroq 85 can achieve a maximum range of more than 560 kilometres on the WLTP cycle and is priced from €42,315 after rebates and delivery charges are applied. Sportline versions will also be offered from launch.

All Elroq versions are rear‑wheel-drive with an all-wheel drive Elroq 85x planned for the latter half of 2025. Charging rates of up to 175 kW at DC fast-charging stations enable the 82 kWh battery of the Elroq 85 to recharge from 10% to 80% in 28 minutes. The smaller batteries of the Elroq 50 and Elroq 60 can be charged in 25 minutes or less.

Spacious interior with sustainable materials and new Simply Clever ideas The Elroq provides a generous amount of interior space. This includes the largest boot in its segment with 470 litres of luggage capacity (up to 1,580 litres with the rear seats folded down). A 13″ infotainment screen with an even more intuitive user interface comes as standard. The Design Selections use numerous innovative sustainable interior materials. There are also new Simply Clever features, among them clever compartments offering 48 litres of storage capacity and a storage net for the charging cable under the parcel shelf. A wide range of intuitive connectivity features, advanced assistance systems and up to nine airbags ensure superior driving comfort and the highest level of active and passive safety.

The Elroq is available to order from Škoda dealers from 7th October, with expected delivery for early orders in April, 2025.

ESB ADDS 50% CAPACITY TO EV CHARGING HUB AT JUNCTION 14 MAYFIELD

E

SB has upgraded its existing High-Power Charging Hub in Junction 14 Mayfield, to include 2 new high power chargers creating 4 more EV charging bays and playing a key role in supporting Ireland’s EV transition and in time for increased demand over the Christmas period. In 2021, ESB opened their first eight bay, high power electric vehicle charging hub at the site. The hub can charge 12 EVs simultaneously, providing 100km of charge in as little as six minutes.

Situated just off the M7, at Monasterevin, Co Kildare, these easily accessible and strategically located chargers eliminate concerns faced by drivers when searching for charging stations on their journeys. This ensures that drivers can confidently plan their routes knowing that a reliable charging station is within reach.

In June, ESB announced a planned price decrease across its public EV charging network in the Republic of Ireland which saw unit rates for High-Power (200kW) chargers reduce by 13%, Fast chargers reduce by 12% and Standard chargers reduce by 8%. Contactless payment is now available across all of our network making the charging experience as seamless as possible for drivers.

Welcoming this announcement, Francis O’Donnell, Head of eMobility at ESB, said: “The upgrade to six High-Power EV chargers at Junction 14 represents our commitment to provi-

ding convenient, quick, and easy charging for EV owners and users. This milestone significantly enhances the availability and accessibility of public charging infrastructure in the Kildare region and beyond ; access to high-power charging facilities on key national routes is essential for EV drivers who need to cover longer distances.”

“Earlier this year, ESB reduced EV charging prices and introduced contactless payments, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to continually finding new ways to enhance the public charging experience for our valued customers.”

Liam Fitzpatrick, Joint owner of Junction 14 Mayfield also welcomed the increased capacity at the site saying: “Our business goal is to provide customers with a premium experience right across all aspects of the site’s facilities and we are delighted to partner with ESB ecars to provide Motorway users with this enhanced capacity to deliver highly efficient on-demand charging.”

To date, ESB has installed 47 multi-vehicle, high-power charging hubs nationwide over the past two years and replaced over 300 chargers to increase the speed and capacity of the charging network. In 2023, partially funded by the Government’s Climate Action Fund, they doubled their number of high-power chargers. ESB now has over 1,600 public charge points in place across the country with an average reliability rate of 98%.

The Temerario offers three distinct driving modes tailored to various needs: Recharge Mode: Utilizes the V8 engine to recharge the battery on the go, providing flexibility for longer drives.

Performance Mode: Delivers maximum power, utilizing the combined 920 CV output for a thrilling and dynamic driving experience.

This hybrid setup also enhances the car’s versatility, making it suitable for both urban environments and racetracks. The advanced Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo 2.0 system ensures optimal torque distribution to each wheel, improving agility and stability while cornering at high speeds.

Lamborghini’s Alleggerita (lightweight) package further reduces weight by over 25 kg through the use of advanced materials such as carbon fiber components, titanium exhaust systems, and polycarbonate windows. This reduction in weight enhances the car’s overall performance and driving dynamics, solidifying its position as a leader in the super sports car segment.

Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini’s Director of Design, describes the Temerario’s styling as “essential and iconic.” The car’s exterior design reflects Lamborghini’s commitment to innovation and aesthetics. Notable features include a bold shark nose, sharp angular headlights, and hexagonal design elements that span the body, from the daytime running

lights (DRLs) to the exhaust pipes. The transparent hood offers a glimpse of the twin-turbo V8 engine, symbolizing the vehicle’s fusion of power and artistry. These elements, combined with the car’s aerodynamic profile, create a visual identity that is both futuristic and unmistakably Lamborghini.

The interior design of the Temerario reflects Lamborghini’s “Feel like a pilot” philosophy, offering an immersive driving experience that seamlessly integrates analog and digital elements. Now three new versions complete the 16-version family: The new edition of the Taycan GTS builds on the model-spanning success story that is the Gran Turismo Sport at Porsche. In addition, the entry-level sports sedan is also available with all-wheel drive for the first time.

The range of Taycan models has never been wider: with three body variants, all-wheel and rear-wheel drive and various power levels of the Porsche E-Performance motors ranging from 300 to 760 kW, there are now 16 versions all told.

ia is already very serious about electric cars. It’s about to get more serious still. The E-GMP electrified platform it developed for its two most advanced bigger EVs, the EV6 and the EV9, has now been used for the kind of small electric models that will really drive the Korean company’s sales forward. It’s been re-engineered for three more compact electric cars - and this is the first of them, the EV3.

Kia doesn’t hold back when it comes to visual impact these days and the EV3 is certainly distinctively styled, as we knew it would be from the concept car shown in 2023. At 4,300mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,560mm tall, it’s fractionally shorter and lower but slightly wider than a Niro EV. With squared-off looks at the front, the EV3 exudes a highly assertive presence with vertical headlamps positioned at the extremes of the clean-surface facial area creating a wide, ultra-confident stance. A new, robust interpretation of Kia’s Tiger Face design incorporates the brand’s latest Star Map signature lighting concept. Arranged vertically, the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) project a highly confident character. The long, sloping, sleek roofline seamlessly transitions into a hatchback-style tailgate, further portraying the highly technical body design. The dynamic silhouette and roomy cabin combine to deliver a spacious interior. The simplified, geometric rear lamp design seamlessly integrates with the rear glass, framing a futuristic tailgate design with a wide, technical, and sleek appearance. Kia offers the EV3 in nine body colours – two of which have been created exclusively for the new model: Adventure Green and Terracotta.

On the outside, Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy showcases divergent values of nature and modernity to form a progressive, dynamic, and dramatic design. Roof rails and angular wheel arch cladding supply the crossover vibe and there are flush-fitting door handles that are hidden in the C-pillar at the rear.

Indoors, Kia says it’s tried to achieve a ‘living space’ feel, though to appreciate that, your ‘living space’ would have to be dominated by screens, as this one is. As with the EV9, there are 12.3-inch displays for instruments and infotainment, plus a further 5.3-inch centre screen for climate control and a 12-inch Head-up display.

The EV3’s interior offers a spacious cabin that comfortably accommodates five people. Kia has created a highly functional and effective cabin that is designed to be enjoyed by occupants on every journey and when the vehicle is charging. An elegant centre console incorporates a sliding table and storage area. The lower area can store drinks and snacks, while personal electronic items such as laptops and tablets can be placed on the table when the vehicle is stationary. Along with multi-adjustable ambient lighting and ultra-comfortable seats, which incorporate a fold-back relaxation mode, the sliding table enables occupants to enjoy maximum relaxation when parked. With a 25-litre frunk and a 460-litre boot, the EV3 offers the largest luggage space in its class. A near-30-inch widescreen display, including a 12.3inch cluster, a five-inch air-conditioning panel, and another 12.3-inch AVN display incorporates seamless touch operation of the climate control functionality and provides clear graphics and intuitive information to the driver. The screen also extends to the centre of the dashboard, giving the front-seat passenger access to entertainment and navigation features.

Many of the EV3’s functions, including drive mode, cruise control, entertainment, and navigation, can be accessed and controlled by a simple touch of the steering wheel buttons. A seamless row of buttons below the central screen intuitively operates various functions like mapping, media, and vehicle system configuration. As with every new Kia, the EV3 incorporates various sustainable items to accelerate sustainability at scale. Recycled fabric is applied to the dashboard and door trims to create an in-

timate and home-like ambience. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is among the most easily recycled plastics in the world, features in numerous areas of the interior, including the seats, headliner, door armrests, garnish, floor mats, and luggage board.

The EV3 Standard model is offered exclusively with a 58.3kWh battery, while the EV3 Long Range variant is fitted with an 81.4kWh battery. Both models utilise a 150kW/283Nm electric motor, which enables a best 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.5 seconds. The EV3’s maximum speed is 170km/h. In pursuit of optimum efficiency, the EV3 features enhanced body aerodynamics incorporating a full 3D undercover to deliver an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.263 Cd. State-of-the-art Battery Management Unit (BMU) and Cell Monitoring Unit (CMU) technology ensures the 58.3kWh and 81.4kWh High- Voltage Battery Systems use energy as efficiently as possible. The EV3 Long Range provides an estimated range of up to 600km (WLTP). This flexibility gives those taking their first foray into electric mobility complete confidence to tackle long journeys. When the EV3’s battery eventually needs replenishing, occupants can relax in the comfort of the living space-like interior as Kia’s advanced Vehicle Charging Management System enables the battery to charge from 10-80 percent in approximately 31 minutes.

But the EV3 isn’t going to be about racing around the place, it’s about comfort and practicality, which it offers in abundance. The EV3 feels stable and responsive, but not nimble in terms of directional changes. It’s heavy at the end of the day, just like every other EV with a decent driving range.

The EV3’s battery is also equipped with a liquid cooling system, which is used during charging to optimise battery thermal management and enhance charging speeds enabling charging from 10 to 80 percent capacity in 29 minutes. EV3 will be available with 0% finance for 251 and is available from a monthly price of just €186pm.

Outright performance is decent enough, with a claimed 7.7-second 0–100km/h time listed for the big-battery variant we tested. Regenerative braking can be managed via the new-generation ‘i-Pedal 3.0’ system, where you employ the paddle shifters to run all the way from no braking (allowing you to coast along smoothly like an internal combustion car), to a more forced one-pedal mode with more aggressive braking. There’s also an auto mode, which will read the road ahead and traffic conditions, and will tailor the braking force as needed. The major strength for me here would be the levels of refinement, with the EV3 being quiet and composed during our test drive.

Electric-only power supply can also be used for the e-creeping function, which is used to make a series of short movements forward with no pressure on the accelerator— for example, in a traffic jam (e-queueing). The car can also be parked in 100% electric mode, either in first gear or in reverse (e- parking). Additionally, the hybrid power supply is designed to recover energy during deceleration.

It combines the advanced and sporty values that the Honda brand is known for, with the latest driver aids and passive safety to realise outstanding reliability, dynamics, and comfort. A focus on high-quality colours, materials and fabrics throughout the cabin has elevated the CR-V more toward the premium segment.

The CR-V is offered with a choice of either a full hybrid (e:HEV) or, for the first time in the European market, a plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV) powertrain. Both variants feature a 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection Atkinson-cycle petrol engine which has been revised to enhance efficiency, refinement, and dynamic performance across the range.

Both come with four wheel drive as standard. There are two hybrids available, both related to the excellent e:HEV system in the latest Civic. That means a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a pair of electric motors – one for traction and one acting as generator. While it works similarly to the previous-generation CR-V hybrid, it’s hugely better in every regard.

The engine doesn’t directly drive the wheels much of the time, instead turning the generator and allowing the electric motor to take care of moving the vehicle at lower speeds. At higher speeds, a lock-up clutch engages for direct drive from the engine to the wheels, a system Honda says is more efficient.

The regular self-charging hybrid model uses a 1.06kWh battery and is virtually identical to the system now used in the Civic and ZR-V. Ride and comfort is among the best you’ll find in a mid-size SUV. Soaking up the bumps and road imperfections, well-weighted steering ensures the performance is polished whether on the motorway or back roads. Acceleration from standstill is linear but nothing astonishing – no match for the current breed of EVs. Squeeze the throttle and the response is reliable and confident.

Normal and eco drive modes are more tuned for efficiency, Sport is marginally better and improves throttle response.

Conclusion The Honda CR-V e:PHEV is an impressive SUV and a real step-up from the previous generation model. Spacious, safe, comfortable, practical and with good technology, it ticks plenty of SUV boxes for families and business drivers.

his new Peugeot e-308 is built on the PSA EMP2 platform, a versatile architecture shared with models such as the Peugeot 3008 and 508 along with the Citröen e-C4 X, DS 4 and many others in the Stellantis group. This platform has been critical in enabling Stellantis to produce a wide range of vehicles with both efficient internal combustion engines and electric versions. It allows for excellent performance, better handling, and improved safety features.

Already available in a electrified plug-in hybrid version, the new Peugeot E-308 is now available in a 100% electric version. The E-308 will be powered by a brand-new electric engine, developing 115 kW (156 bhp) and with a range up to 413 km (WLTP cycle). The new E-308 arrives in Allure and GT trim levels.

The design of the new Peugeot E-308 is rooted in the Peugeot DNA. The e-308 features a bold front grille with a gloss black finish, flanked by sleek Matrix LED headlamps that incorporate Peugeot’s signature fang-shaped daytime running lights. The vehicle’s profile is characterised by sharp, dynamic lines and a sloping roofline, contributing to its sporty and aerodynamic appearance. At the rear, the e-308 showcases a sculpted tailgate with integrated LED taillights enhancing its modern look.

For its driver and passengers, the new Peugeot E-308 offers the latest generation of the Peugeot i-Cockpit®, recognisable by its compact, heated steering wheel, dedicated to driving pleasure and controlled agility, its 3-dimensional digital head-up display, which can be customised and configured, and its central 10-inch touch screen.

The emphasis has been placed on cabin craftsmanship, inventiveness with fully configurable virtual i-toggles, and connectivity including the latest i-Connect® Advanced technology, an infotainment system that makes the driving and travelling experience more intuitive and rewarding. The battery is also new generation. It is a 54 kWh high-voltage battery (51 kWh useful) with a new chemistry. The battery has a new chemical composition with 80% Nickel - 10% Manganese - 10% Cobalt, which operates at 400 volts and allows a range of over 400 km according to the WLTP. Efficiency was a major concern for the Peugeot E-308 engineers, since the combined efforts in terms of engine, battery, aerodynamics (optimisation of the front end and underbody), weight optimisation (EMP2 platform) and reduction of friction losses (class A tyres) has made it possible to attain remarkably low average energy consumption.

In addition, in order to manage energy consumption as effectively as possible, the driver can select his or her driving mode (Eco, Normal and Sport), and even, thanks to the “Brake” mode, increase deceleration when the accelerator pedal is released in order to optimise energy recovery.

The on-board three-phase charger comes as standard and has a power rating of 11 kW. The charging socket accepts all charging modes. From a 100kW public charging point, the vehicle charge will go from 20% to 80% charge in less than 25 minutes or 12mn for 100km.

So what does all this mean on the road. Well first off the Peugeot e-308 offers a smooth and refined driving experience, blending comfort with engaging performance. Its 156-horsepower electric motor delivers responsive acceleration, reaching 0-100 km/h in around 9.8 seconds, making it suitable for both city driving and motorway cruising. The vehicle’s handling provides good stability, with a well-tuned suspension that absorbs bumps and rough road surfaces, ensuring a comfortable ride. The e-308 also offers a relatively quiet cabin, enhancing the driving experience. During my test I found the steering to be light but precise, adding to the ease of manoeuvring, particularly when in the city centre where parking is tight.

The e-308 feels agile and responsive, with minimal body roll. The regenerative braking system is well-calibrated, offering a natural feel when slowing down. While its performance is not as sporty as some competitors, it provides a balanced approach to daily driving, offering efficiency without sacrificing comfort. Overall I appreciated the quiet

Volkswagen has chosen Lapiz Blue as the hero colour for the new Touareg and you can see why – the car looks stunning in this colour. The newly designed bumpers and elegant black elements, such as the radiator grille, air intakes, trim strips and exterior mirror housings, signal sportiness. Even the design trim strips on the front wings and the doors underline the sporty ambitions. The R logo in the radiator grille ensure that the most powerful Volkswagen of all time is unmistakable. At the rear of the car is an illuminated ‘VW’ badge on the tailgate; it’s lit up in red when the lights are on, and looks superb. It’s a small feature that I quite like.

Inside the Touareg R reveals a rich scene of luxury, featuring glossy black and brushed metal-look panels that gleam under a rich glow of ambient lighting. The contrasting double blue stitching throughout the cabin creates a regal touch, while the premium leather upholstery envelops you in comfort. The design isn’t just for show. It’s highly functional, too. You’ll find massive door pockets and generous bottle holders that make storing everyday essentials easy. A deep centre storage compartment is perfect for hiding away your bits and bobs, while a clever hideaway knee box on the right side keeps everything neatly out of sight. Volkswagen knows how to cater to our desire for organisation. In terms of interior dimensions, the Touareg is huge, bigger than the previous generation and easily accommodating five adults.

The standard highlights of the premium model include the redesigned, even more intuitive Innovision Cockpit with a central touchscreen and the new IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights. Their more than 38,000 interactive LEDs project a light carpet exactly onto the driving lane and illuminate the road more precisely than ever before. A further

Volkswagen also considered the little details that make a big difference. Double-layer sun visors, close assist doors, an electronically adjustable steering wheel, massaging front seats, and seat belt active tensioners are just some of the thoughtful solutions that create a refined atmosphere.

Bright interior lighting adds to the overall luxurious feel, making evening drives a pleasure rather than a chore.

As for the tech, the Touareg R boasts huge screens that have undergone a significant upgrade from previous models. The lower resolution fonts are a thing of the past; the new 15-inch centre and 12-inch instrument displays are crisp and highly customisable. And let’s not forget about the 14-speaker Dynaudio sound system. This isn’t just any audio setup, it’s a full-bodied experience. With booming bass and crystal-clear sound, your favourite tracks come alive.

Behind the second row, boot space has vastly grown over the previous generation. From 580 litres to 810 litres. With the rear seats folded down, the volume also increases from 1642 litres to 1800 litres.

The new Touareg R eHybrid features a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged engine and electric drive motor with a system output of 462hp as well as torque of 700 Nm as standard. gs, the plug-in R makes use of a petrol V6, albeit with the same 3.0L displacement as the non-hybrid diesels. Peak power for the engine alone – say, when there is no charge left in the battery – is rated at 250kW at 2500rpm and 450Nm from 1500 to 5300rpm.

Winding through backroads, taxing the engine, motor, 285mm tyres and six-pot front brakes, it is easy to get into a natural rhythm with this car – a rarity for even sporty SUVs. The underlying dynamics are impressive for a 2.4-tonne vehicle, though the capability is not unlimited. Keep pushing hard and you’ll eventually locate hesitation from the front end.

This petrol-electric version is responsive, first from the electric motor and then from the turbo V6, which makes for a fierce corner exit once combined with that all-wheel-drive system.

It was pleasing to see the Touareg R actively recouping energy while braking – meaning it’s loaded-up and ready to deploy electric power when you exit the corner. You can feel the hybrid system bolstering the V6. Even when the battery slowly whittles down after a while, it’s designed to 51

always keep some juice locked away for a sudden acceleration burst when you need it. The Touareg R’s body control still took me by surprise as the four-corner adaptive air suspension is competent at managing the weight. Some ‘R’ enthusiasts might say that all of this is not enough to earn the true R badge, and the extra power gained from the electric side is a cheaters’ way out. Nonetheless, acceleration is nothing short of exhilarating, giving you the confidence to merge onto motorways or tackle steep inclines with ease.

The safety list is top of class, with too much to mention.

he V60 is a medium-sized estate that combines all the practicality and convenience you’d expect from a Volvo, with a healthy dose of style, technology and advanced safety features. Interestingly, the larger Volvo V90 is no longer offered in Ireland and therefore this Volvo V60 could realistically be one of the last petrol-powered Volvo estates you can buy. Designed with a spacious interior, the Volvo V60 Recharge leaves the assembly line constructed with Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform which also underpins the award-winning XC60 SUV. This V60’s sleek stance helps create a more striking exterior appearance than ever before with a low, wide silhouette that provides an unmistakable look from all angles. Signature LED headlights provide clear illumination while its shortened front overhang instills a look of confidence. You wouldn’t know the performance potential it possesses from looking at it but this is a quick car. There are few visual hints that this V60 T6 is something more than just a modern estate. For the most part, it just looks like a sharp-looking, handsome estate but it can absolutely move and is very quick. And then when you pull back into your driveway, it just looks like an expensive, sophisticated Volvo. The V60 is in my opinion a good looking car, with sharp edges, perfect proportions, and impressive “Thor’s hammer” headlights up front.

Inside, it’s very typical Volvo. The seats are lovely to sit in and lovely to look at thanks to heavy bolstering and a cool blend of leather and fabric. Unique materials found inside the Volvo V60 Recharge include its tailored dashboard- a distinctive treatment with a satisfying texture that pays tribute to Volvo Cars’ iconic Swedish heritage. A standard 9-inch touchscreen sits in the dashboard’s centre, accented by vertical air vents along with a central strip with a metal finish. In addition to expanded interior dimensions, the V60 Recharge delivers cutting-edge connectivity features including Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration. Both models use the same electrical system, and the 19kWh battery offers an official all-electric range of up to 92km, while the battery can be recharged in three hours from a home charger. Whichever version you choose, the maximum towing weight of the V60 is 2,000kg.

The new Volvo V60 Recharge estate is the same excellent product it’s been for a quite a while. Thanks to the potent 350hp plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Volvo easily dispatches the 0-100 km/h sprint in under 5.4 seconds, and it’s also quite accomplished in the corners thanks to the grippy, all-wheel-drive setup. Estates get overlooked for SUV’s and get an unnecessarily bad reputation because they are actually superb daily drivers, and we really enjoyed the V60 T6 Recharge for its delightful handling. The ride is good and passengers will be kept isolated and comfortable on even longer journeys.

Conclusion The Volvo V60 T6 Recharge is an excellent choice for those seeking a stylish plug-in hybrid estate. he Seal is an all-electric saloon whose shape is clearly designed to be low in drag, boosting its range between recharges. It’s a bit longer than the Model 3 overall, and its wheelbase is a full five centimetres longer. The Seal sits on the same e-Platform 3.0 as the Atto 3 and Dolphin, but it uses a different battery installation. Called ‘cell-to-body’, it in effect stitches the 11cm-tall blade-battery pack into the Seal’s structure, so the floor you place your feet on is actually the top of the battery pack, rather than a conventional metal platform that would normally sit above it.

This compact installation increases torsional rigidity and helps to thin the floor, in turn making the Seal’s roofline impressively low, being about 10mm lower than it would have been without cell-to-body tech.

The end result is a fairly dramatic-looking creation with neatly resolved lines and made even cleaner by retractable door handles. The Seal is arguably one of the best-looking cars we’ve yet seen from a Chinese brand. Even the contentious ‘Build your dreams’ slogan has been dropped from the tailgate, in response to feedback from key markets – impressively quick adaptation you’d agree.

A four-door, all-electric, D-segment saloon whose dynamic and sporty appearance underline the appeal it’s already having with Irish and European motorists, the BYD SEAL is the third model to launch here since BYD was introduced to Ireland.

With the recently-introduced BYD Dolphin and the BYD Atto 3 – winner of the Continental Irish Small/ Compact SUV 2024 award – the BYD Seal is a model that its Irish distributor believes will ‘boost the awareness of BYD, help in attracting new dealers, and consolidate BYD’s growing reputation in Ireland as ‘the biggest car brand you’ve never heard of’. The BYD Seal recently one the Continental Irish Large Car of the Year 2025 so another big endorsement for the brand.

Recent dealer appointments have increased the BYD network to six outlets all strategically located, and all exclusively dedicated to the brand. They are: BYD Dublin North, BYD Dublin South, BYD Cork, BYD Waterford, BYD Limerick and BYD Wexford. All have Seal, Dolphin, Seal U and Atto 3 models for viewing.

The model line-up consists of two powertrain variants – ‘Design’ and an all-wheel drive ‘Excellence’ offering two trim levels, six body colours, two interior trim colours and several technological ‘firsts’ that Motor Distributors Limited says: ‘sets Seal apart’. Given its outstanding range of equipment and generous dimensions, with space for five occupants, Seal launches at what is said to be ‘an attractively-competitive price’, beginning at €44,036 for the Design model and from €49,836 for the Excellence model (after

BYD SEAL State subsidies). Like its predecessors, the BYD Seal will be powered by BYD’s own, in-house developed 82.5 kWh Blade Battery with power outputs from 230 kW (Design) to 390 kW (Excellence) with a range (WLTP combined) of 570 kms (Design) and 520 kms (Excellence) and 0-100 km/h speeds of 5.9 seconds and 3.8 seconds respectively.

Other key Blade Battery features include a 30% to 80% fast charging time of 26 minutes, when charged at a 150 kW DC charging point. Due also to its unique ‘sandwich’ design which, amongst other attributes, is safer and helps deliver added handling rigidity and more interior space, it has the environmental benefit of being 100% cobalt free.

Like the Dolphin before it, the new BYD Seal is the second model from BYD’s ‘Ocean’ series and the latest to feature its innovative ‘Ocean Aesthetics’ design language. Created by a design team led by BYD’s Global Design Director, Wolfgang Egger, the BYD Seal is a versatile four-door sedan with the appearance and feel of a sports coupé.

Despite its low-to-ground body – with a drag coefficient of just 0.219 Cd – its 2,920 mm wheelbase provides occupants with what BYD says is ‘plenty of headroom and leg space similar to that of an executive saloon’.

ping A-pillar, rounded roof, sloping fastback and subtle upturned ducktail shape. Concealed door handles, flush with the door when in motion, helps reduce wind resistance and energy consumption. Save for model variances, drivetrain and performance differences, the BYD Seal comes with an extensive range of standard features and specifications common to both Design and Excellence models.

Inside, soft and firm padded front seats have a sporty appearance – the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable in eight directions with four-way power-adjustable lumbar support. Occupants can also count on plenty of light in the interior thanks to an oversized panoramic sunroof. Front doors are fitted with double layered laminated glass for excellent sound and heat insulation. Rear doors feature privacy glass, providing enhanced shade and privacy Storage is amply provided: the luggage compartment of 400 litres is supplemented by a 53-litre under-bonnet space and more than 20 interior spaces. In addition to a centre armrest box, open-storage space and a wireless charging point for two mobile phones is provided beneath the sub-dash.

A smart connectivity and leading infotainment system are amongst a suite of high-tech features that include 4G intelligent connection and over-the-Air (OTA) updates; a 15.6-inch rotatable screen with intelligent voice control function and seamless smartphone integration via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay; a 10.25-inch LCD full instrument panel, and a 12-speaker Dynaudio Performance Audio System.

Safety-wise, an extensive range of advanced driver assistance features includes Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Rear Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Brake, Lane Keep Assistance, Lane Change Assist and Emergency Lane Keep. Additional items are Adaptive Cruise Control and Intelligent Cruise Control, a 360-degree Panoramic Camera, Blind Spot Detection System, ESP, Traction Control, Hill Decent Control, Automatic Vehicle Hold, Intelligent Speed Limit Information and Intelligent Speed Limit Control.

Cutting-edge lighting technology provides a wider beam to aid visibility during night driving, with high beam assist, adaptive headlights and Follow-Me-Home as standard. An 11 kW 3-phase on-board charger for AC charging is also supplied as standard.

At the top of the range is the Seal Excellence that we tested. The Excellence model’s range is up to 520km. The flagship BYD Seal Excellence stuns with its straight-line acceleration. With two electric motors, one at each axle,

combining for 530hp and 670Nm, the Seal Excellence can complete the sprint from 0–100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

That’s staggering for any car, more impressive still when you consider the Seal tips the scales at a not inconsiderable 2185kg. Of course, straight-line speed is one thing, how the Seal handles more sedate driving another. Despite that impressive acceleration, the Seal is happy to be driven in a more refined manner. Take-off from standstill at traffic lights and a predictable surge of speed comes, but it never feels unwieldy. Of course, while 3.8 seconds has few applications in the real world, it comes into its own when merging onto motorways or overtaking.

The ride, on the side of firm, remains nicely balanced. The Seal is fitted with passive dampers, although in this topspec variant, BYD claims “semi-active suspension” than-

ks to the fitment of variable-frequency dampers. Simply, damping remains high for a firmer ride on smoother road surfaces, but softens off over rougher roads to better absorb impacts over potholes and the like.

It works, too, the Seal Excellence offering a compliant ride, no matter what the road threw up. There are four drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow – and while Sport adds a touch of razor-like sharpness to throttle response and steering weight, Normal is perfectly fine for most conditions. It remained our preference. Road noise levels are nicely kept at bay, with double-glazed windows and decent sound-deadening ensuring cabin comfort is maintained.

Other beneficial features include a high-efficiency heat pump system which regulates the battery temperature, controls the passenger compartment temperature, and

absorbs waste heat from the electric powertrain; BYD’s innovative 8-in-1 electric drivetrain which integrates eight key components for propulsion, charging, control and management while optimising space utilisation and energy efficiency; during the charging process, a system to reduce heat generation of the charging and distribution assembly for more reliable performance.

The first BYD model with independent suspension – double wishbones at the front and a five-link rear suspension – the new BYD SEAL boasts state-of-the-art vehicle architecture based on their e-Platform 3.0 with Cell-to-Body technology that delivers torsional rigidity and a low centre of gravity.

A six-years manufacturer’s warranty and an eight years battery and electric motor warranty applies to all BYD Seal models.

Conclusion

This fifth-generation Clio remains true to form, with a much-improved interior, new engines, a hybrid model and great safety technology.

MINI COUNTRYMAN ow in it’s third generation, the largest member of the MINI family has grown in stature, gaining six centimetres in height and 13 centimetres in length. The first all-electric MINI Countryman marks a pivotal step on MINI’s journey towards becoming an all-electric brand.

The new MINI Countryman offers the versatility of a compact crossover while maintaining iconic MINI proportions: short overhangs, a short bonnet, and a contrasting long wheelbase, while larger wheels, wider wheel arches and the removal of chrome details add to the vehicles road presence. This contemporary exterior design is supported by clear-cut surfaces, a slightly curved roof, and a newly designed C-pillar, making the vehicle appear shorter.

The models front end is characterised by a new octagonal grille with a small radar sensor integrated into its surface to enable Level 2 semi-automated driving – a first for the MINI brand. Newly designed headlights are offered with three unique light signatures for the first time, and the daytime running light elements can be switched to create three adjustable light signatures. At the rear, vertical light clusters reminiscent of classic Mini design can be switched to different modes in the same way as the front headlights. In addition, all light modes start and end with a specially orchestrated welcome and goodbye animation.

There’s availability of a single-motor, front-wheel-drive Countryman E, with 204hp and a range of around 462km from its 64.8kWh battery pack, but what we’re driving here is the SE All4. This puts a 140kW (190hp) electric motor on each axle, giving it four-wheel drive and peak outputs of 313hp and 494Nm. Using the same battery pack as the E, there’s a slight range sacrifice to be made, but 407km from the SE still

Once you step into the front seat and its familiar premium surroundings if you’ve been in a modern MINI the JCW-branded sports seats look and feel great. Dark grey and red textured trim stand out as the obvious differences over a less premium MINI, as does the steering wheel with its JCW badge and curious boost button. The excellent sat-nav system is easy to use and the extra screens with EV details like charging readouts and battery info set it apart from its combustion engine peers.

The exterior JCW graphics, badges and rather smart 20inch Flag Spoke two-tone alloys set the look. Hitting the boost button is a real crowd-pleaser. My nine year old got very excited by the boost button on the steering wheel, which activates a multi-coloured on-screen countdown from 10 to one illustrating the 10-second power boost that provides rapid acceleration. Great fun.

The Countryman SE’s sizable 2080kg curb weight is the dominating factor in the way it drives. I could be wrong but I think this figure makes it the heaviest Mini to date.

So, although the SE gets a Go Kart mode, which makes noises akin to the ones you’d hear while playing Mario Kart, the electric Countryman is neither shifty nor light-feeling in the way associated with its smaller siblings.

That’s not to say that’s it’s not engaging to drive. The SE’s punchy 313hp is easily available with a tap of the accelerator pedal in the instant fashion familiar to EVs. A quick leap off the line can see it reach 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds.

So it’s quick. Soft suspension tuning and a longer wheelbase give a more agreeable ride than in the previous Countryman, but the inherent compromise is less incisive handling.

There’s plenty of storage internally I’ve got 505 litres of boot space, rather than the 460 litres in the standard BEV (or 450 litres in the ICE version). That’s more than enough to swallow buggies, bikes, boots and toys.

Conclusion For somebody who can recharge at home and puts a premium on style and tech, the Countryman SE ALL4 has an appeal. It might not be as engaging as some of the others in the MINI lineup but for many buyers they wouldn’t really notice this to a certain extent due to how they drive on a daily basis and other factors. Overall it’s a fun car.. got to love that boost button!
