COMMUNITY MEMBERS JOIN SHERIFF’S CAPTAIN REYES AND DEPUTIES FOR AN EVENING OF CONVERSATION On the evening of May 18, 2022, Captain Reyes and Deputies from the Sheriff’s Temple Station, South El Monte city officials, and community members came together for an informal gathering at local business Dunkin’ to discuss community issues and build relationships over pizza, donuts, and coffee. “This casual gathering was a great opportunity for our community members voices to be heard and to build strong relationships between residents, businesses, the City and law enforcement to make our community safer and better,” said one city official.

The event was purposely held in the evening hours to allow more community members to participate as many of them work or attend school during the daytime hours. A special thanks to Dunkin’ for allowing us to host this successful community event at their outdoor patio and for donating donuts, coffee and water for attendees. The City of South El Monte and the Sheriff’s South El Monte Deputies plan to host more events that promote community policing through improving relationships between police and community members. The goal of the meeting was to provide our community members a comfortable setting to ask questions, bring concerns, learn about the Sheriff’s Department’s work in our neighborhoods, or simply get to know Captain Reyes and Deputies that serve and protect South El Monte. The majority of the time the public’s interaction with law enforcement has happened during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective time for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel Deputies are unapproachable on the street.
