WOMEN’S HISTORY

MONTH

Katherine Johnson was a trailblazing African American mathematician whose work at NASA was instrumental in some of the most significant achievements in space exploration. In 1953, Johnson began working at NACA (the predecessor to NASA) as a "computer" a term used for people who performed complex mathematical calculations by hand. She quickly gained a reputation for her accuracy and analytical skills. Her big break came in 1961 when she calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard's historic flight aboard Freedom 7, making him the first American in space. Johnson’s calculations ensured that Shepard’s spacecraft would safely launch, orbit, and return to Earth. She played a crucial role in calculating the trajectories for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, which successfully landed the first humans on the Moon. She also worked on the Apollo 13 mission in 1970. Johnson retired from NASA in 1986 after a 33-year career. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama for her groundbreaking contributions to space exploration and her role in breaking racial and gender barriers in STEM fields.
