RECLAIM Public Art Residency is a program to support mid-career artists in their pursuit of public art practices. RECLAIM also focuses on the upcycling of artwork construction materials. This STEPS program in collaboration with the City of Fort St. John is awarded to 3rd Generation First Nation Carver, John Lambert. This summer John will lead a small cohort of youth and young adults through completing a 3 dimensional piece of temporary public art. This Summer we will see a temporary installation using reclaimed and upcycled materials in Fort St. John!

Bronze Cross

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safety supervision. Bronze Cross training begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard and Leadership Certification Programs. Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion Certificate.

Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion teaches lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Bronze Cross. Prerequisites: 13 years of age or Bronze Star Certificate.

Lifesaving Instructor

Pre-requisites: Must be 15 years of age by the last day of the course and must have completed Bronze Cross. Pass your lifesaving knowledge on to others by teaching them valuable skills that will help to save lives. Lifesaving Society instructor training is fun and full of instructional information based on the latest educational theory. Taking a Lifesaving Instructor course is the first step in instructor training for the Lifesaving Society of BC & Yukon.

National Lifeguard

The National Lifeguard Pool Certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. This course emphasizes lifeguarding skills, principles, practices, and the decision-making processes that will assist a lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. Prerequisites: 15 years of age or older, Bronze Cross Certificate, Proof of Standard First Aid with CPR-C or Aquatic Emergency Care (MUST be shown on the first day of the course). NOTE: Emergency First Aid and Occupational First Aid Level 1 are NOT equivalent to Standard First Aid CPR C. IMPORTANT: Admittance to this course will be denied if prerequisites are not met and no refund will be given. Please arrive to class with your original certification documentation (no photocopies) and government-issued photo ID.

Standard First Aid (OFA level 1 Equivalent)

16-hour First Aid and CPR course that covers topics such as cardiovascular/breathing emergencies, sudden medical emergencies, injuries to head/neck/spine and musculoskeletal injuries. Canadian Red Cross Blended First Aid is accepted by WorkSafe BC as Equivalent to OFA Level 1. This course requires 8 hours of online training and 8 hours of in-class skills assessment.

Swim Patrol: Rookie, Ranger, & Star

Recommended: Completed Swimmer 6. Rookie participants continue to develop front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Swimmers develop individual fitness to meet a timed 100m swim and 350m workout. Water proficiency skills include swimming with clothes, ready position, and feet-first/head-first surface dives. They’ll demonstrate first aid skills such as the ability to conduct a primary assessment and calling EMS, victim recognition and throwing assists. Ranger Patrol participants will enhance capability in the water including stride entries and underwater, forward and backward somersaults. Swimmers learn lifesaving sport skills with a lifesaving stroke medley, timed object support and a non-contact rescue with a buoyant aid. Eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels are developed to meet a 200m timed swim. First aid focuses on unconscious victims and obstructed airway procedures. Star Patrol challenges swimmers with a 300m timed swim, 600m workout and a 25m object carry. Strokes are continued to be refined. Lifesaving skills include use of rescue aids, defense methods, victim removals and supporting a victim in shallow water. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies. Once complete, swimmers register into Bronze Star.
