Holidays for all... Following the recent demise of the Leeds – Heathrow service Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, recently announced a new three times daily midweek service to London Gatwick. The new route, which starts on 29th June will create 130 jobs in the region, and will also have two departures on Saturdays and Sundays. See www.flybe.com for more details, at the time of going to press they’re just charging taxes and fees making a return trip around £50.00. A lot has been made of the costs involved in travelling to the eurozone this year, the Post Office has just released the results of their Annual Holiday Costs Barometer and, Bulgaria at £42.00 is coming out as the cheapest destination in the survey with Antigua being the most expensive. The items included a three-course meal for two with wine, a bottle of factor-15 suncream (go higher though to keep your looks), insect repellent and various drinks. Spain came in at £67.08, Turkey £64.31, Portugal £67.47 and Thailand £43.92. For both convenience and exclusivity a villa is often a great option for families or friends. A week’s rental on 30 May at the Venzala or Casa Dos villas in Puerto Pollensa, northern Mallorca, is just £895.00 for up to six persons sharing a three-bedroom villa with private pool. Both properties are within walking distance of the centre so no need to hire a car. Or on Menorca the three-bedroom Bella Vista in the resort of Cala Galdana is also £895.00 sleeping up to six, flights extra. www.villaselect.com or contact me for exclusive offers.

TAKE IT TO THE MAXI... If there is one key item to add to your wardrobe this season it is the full-length dress. Versatile and trendy, find one to suit your shape.

One week’s self catering to the Crystallo Apartments in Paphos, Cyprus on 31st May is £245.00 per person, or for Zoe’s Studios in Faliraki, Rhodes on 27th May is £235.00 for one week and £275.00 for a fortnight. Also on 9th June a week at the Vasso Studios in Hersonissos in Crete is £265.00. All based on flights from Leeds with transfers and bags included. These are just a few of the pre-peak season offers around for May and June.

Whether willowy or wide, skinny or short; no matter what your frame, with careful selection of styles and fashion accessories, every woman can feel feminine and glamorous in a versatile maxi dress.

A bit further afield, for bookings made in May, a nine-day tour taking in India’s Golden Triangle visiting imperial Delhi, the Taj Mahal, the Pink City of Jaipur and a stay at a royal mansion in Rajasthan. The first person pays £1495.00 and the second just £745.00, sharing the same room. Includes flights from Heathrow and is for travel from now up to 14th July and 16th August – 22nd September. This magical itinerary is with the highly regarded tour operator, Cox and Kings.

DO buy a style with the right length for your height. Overly long hemlines can take inches off your height so make sure you get the right length to flatter your figure.

Also with C&K a private-luxury safari to Zambia staying at Kapani Lodge in the Luangwa Valley, one of the last wilderness areas and arguably the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. It covers an area of over 9000 sq. km and houses huge concentrations of game - including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo - and over 400 species of birds. £3495.00 for the first person £795.00 for the second. www.coxandkings.com or contact me for exclusive offers. Lastly America bound travellers beware, in January the US authorities replaced the green visa waiver forms with the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, it seems some unscrupulous websites are making a charge for this free service, if you need to apply the official website is www.esta.cbp.dhs.gov. For help and unbiased advice on any travel related matter contact Michael Croft at City Travel on 0113 245 3187 or email michael.croft@travelcounsellors.com

Here’s some DO’s and DON’Ts to get you started:

DO choose heels which will give you enough height to make you look feminine and glamorous not lumpy and large. Patent platforms and wedge heels are great for this season. DO team with this season’s oversized bags, large shades and a headscarf for a real celebrity look. DO consider an empire line if you are conscious about your stomach. The focus is on the breasts with the fabric falling from just beneath them. The flowing skirt acts as a tent without hiding your entire figure. DON’T over accessorize a flowing maxi with a belt as it will ruin the line of the dress DON’T wear small floral patterns if you are curvy. Opt for blockcolours or larger prints. DON’T choose a light colour if you want to hide your lumps and bumps. Darker colours disguise flab and are more sophisticated for the forty-somethings. DON’T teem your maxi with cowboy boots, thats just wrong!. DON’T layer your clothes. A simple shrug or cropped cardigan will do the trick. Alternatively choose a short fitted jacket. DON’Tbe afraid of volume but choose the cut wisely. An empire line with a flowing skirt flatters the narrowest part of the body and doesn’t swamp your frame.

City Travel For more information and unbiased advice on any travel matter contact: Michael Croft at City Travel on 0113 245 3187 or email: michael.croft@travelcounsellors.com.

DON’T be afraid to wear it casually - walking the dog or a shopping expedition. The maxi is no longer just for ‘dressing up’ in the evenings.. www.jamessteward.co.uk For any fashion questions or queries contact: email: james@city-dweller.co.uk

HAREWOOD HIMALAYAN GARDENS RE-OPENED BY ALAN TITCHMARSH Photography by Kippa Matthews

HAREWOOD IS CELEBRATING THE REDEVELOPMENT OF ITS RENOWNED HIMALAYAN GARDEN WHICH WAS OPENED BY ALAN TITCHMARSH ON FRIDAY 15TH MAY The new garden, spearheaded by head gardener Trevor Nicholson, is a redevelopment of the former Rock Garden, renamed the Harewood Himalayan Garden. Originally consecrated by eminent Bhutanese Lama Baso Karpo in 2005 at a ceremony attended by HRH the Prince of Wales, this three acre sunken glade situated below ‘Capability’ Brown’s majestic lake, has been redeveloped and replanted. Alan Titchmarsh was delighted to be asked to open the new garden. He finds the idea of a Himalayan planting scheme contrasting with the traditional landscape of a stately home

appealing: ‘Gardens are traditionally places where exotic plants are grown, rather than native species, and I think Harewood is especially suited to these kind of plants. The richness of the Himalayan flora is captivating.’ Alan is delighted as always to come back to Yorkshire; ‘As a Yorkshireman, we went to Harewood a lot, it was our local stately home, so it’s wonderful to be coming back to open the new part of the garden - I always love coming home and am happy to find any excuse – especially if it involves a garden.’ To find out more about the new Harewood Himalayan Garden and its redevelopment, opportunities for interviews during Alan Titchmarsh’s visit and events to celebrate the unveiling, please contact: Kendra GrahameClarke (PR) on 07910 214 474 or see www.harewood.org Harewood is an independent charitable educational trust set up to maintain and develop Harewood, its collections and grounds, for the public benefit. Registered Charity No: 517753. Harewood House, home to the Queen’s cousin the Earl of Harewood, provides a great day out for all the family. The House, with its outstanding art collections, splendid State Rooms and fascinating ‘Below Stairs’ exhibition, is set in spectacular landscaped grounds, which include formal gardens and gentle woodland walks, a Bhutanese Stupa, waterfall and Himalayan Garden. As the tributaries of the river Aire appear to be washing down my living room window, I fleetingly wonder if the Met Office has got it wrong altogether. However, ever the optimist, I refuse to be downtrodden by the cynicism of my sceptic left brain and have decided to charge into the light armed with tartan rug, factor 25 and gleaming barbeque (barely used last year). Should the wind blow up in my face, the rain dampen my spirits and the cloud darken this summertime sensation, I have this year’s perfect must have accessories for inner warmth. Think citrus! Vibrancy is in, but feel free to deviate from the pattern as selfexpression is always the key. Here is what’s in my cabinet this season:

TRADITIONAL SANGRIA - Dressed for PARTY of four Slice and mix those citrus colours. Seville Orange (x2), lemon (x2) and vibrant lime (x2). Add 100g caster sugar and 12cl Aged 3 years (plus) Brandy (£8.99* per 70cl bottle) and leave to contemplate in the fridge. Then, I advise, adding splash of red (1 bottle – Yali Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere - £4.99*) and chilling overnight. Should be ready to exhibit after this but look in the mirror first. Does this reflect your taste? If not, add some fruit juice until you agree. GET READY FOR A COSMOPOLITAN VISIT TO THE CITY OF FUN!

GRAND ESPRIT - Dressed for PARTY of four The National BBQ Association’s Gastro Alfresco Campaign are touting a mix of 20cl Grand Marnier (£26.99* per 70cl bottle) and Elderflower Cordial (45cl), paired with Soda Water (15cl), again with that citrus mix of sliced lemon (x2), lime (x2) with a small strawberry stripe (x3). IT’S NEW, IT’S FRESH AND EXCITING! It was a rainbow sky of amber, pinks and scarlet this evening, which harps back to the old proverb, “Red sky at night, citizens of Leeds delight!” *This is a guide price. City Dweller REAL REVIEW

This month City Dweller sees the first of a new addition to the magazine. The Real Review! Each month Real Radio’s Dixie will be here to provide you, the reader, an insight into the latest and hottest buys in the CD charts. ANNIE LENNOX THE ANNIE LENNOX COLLECTION

SHOOTING LEAD RABBITS SHOOTING LEAD RABBITS

MORRISSEY YEARS OF REFUSAL

1

2

3

She’s a national treasure and Annie Lennox has to have one of the purest singing voices ever. Her career has been long and fruitful and ‘The Collection’ is a testament to that. Following up from her comeback album in 2007 ‘Songs Of Mass Destruction,’ There are, as often is with ‘best ofs’, a couple of newies; ‘Pattern of My Life’ written by Keane’s Tom Chaplin, and a cover of Ash’s ‘Shining Light.’ Annie sounds as powerful and fresh on these two new tracks as those songs from the early days.

Morrissey has been up, he’s been down and he’s been a downright pain! ‘Years of Refusal’ sees him up; right up. From the crashing opening note of ‘Something Is Squeezing My Skull’ ‘Years of Refusal’ keeps up the tempo and quality through all twelve tracks. I rarely think I have heard Morrissey sound better than he does here and I love the feel of this album. It emits a great feeling of optimism, which for Morrissey could be a first!!

‘Shooting Lead Rabbits’ is the first release from the band of the same name and I can assure you, if this is anything to go by, these guys will go all the way. In these days of iTunes, music academies and bands being sussed about the music biz, groups like Shooting Lead Rabbits don’t need major record company backing to break through because they’ve taken control. Their debut album features eight well produced tracks which present a remarkably established sound.

VARIOUS ARTISTS THE BOAT THAT ROCKED

U2 NO LINES ON THE HORIZON

CAROLE KING TAPESTRY REMASTERED

6

U2 is ingrained through this album like a stick of rock. That may sound like a daft thing to say but there is not a single moment you could be mistaken as to who you are listening to. Bono’s voice has lost nothing; it’s powerful, emotive, it’s a veritable audio signature, so very distinctive. While The Edge’s guitar work continues to provide a rock solid, distinctive, not over complicated but perfectly delivered, power house of sound. ‘No Lines..’ is U2’s twelfth studio album!

Where would we be without the pirates? Stations that is, not the Somarlian ones!! Well according to this film this boat really did rock! It’s not actually quite how it was though and the movie producers used a great deal of poetic licence. If they’d told it how it really was this would have been a much duller and colder movie. But the soundtrack is a fantastic package featuring so many tracks you don’t hear anywhere near enough of these days. 36 tracks in total over a double CD set. If you only ever buy one 60’s CD this year, make sure it’s this one.

Before Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ came along ‘Tapestry’ was the biggest selling album by a solo artist. It was landmark in so many ways and way beyond its release in 1971; it stayed on the charts for almost six years; it earned Carol King four Grammy’s but she was no overnight sensation. If you are a teenager reading this and you’ve never heard of Carol King, go buy ‘Tapestry’ it’s a master class in popular music, you won’t be disappointed!

City Dweller JOJO

A day at the Office! Leeds has everything a great city can offer, but what it doesn’t have is a Racecourse. Yes I know people say it’s a mugs game, but having recently had a day out at Doncaster Racecourse my opinion has changed massively. My Father is a bit of a gambling man and often when I ring him and ask him where he is, he’s in his local bookies, which he affectionately refers to as ‘the office’. But in his defence, going to the ‘office’ has afforded him several trips to the Caribbean. Anyway, as usual I digress, I took my father to the ‘actual’ races as a birthday present last month and what a gift it was! Not only did my dad get to place bets in the chaos and excitement of the racing arena, but he also received the privilege of being a guest judge alongside me, judging Miss South Yorkshire 2009 - sitting next to the current Miss England and Miss Ireland! Lucky Swine! Not bad for an old bloke eh? With initial betting trepidation I soon found myself in the swing of things and managed to get a decent win on an ‘OS’ (horse) called ‘Afrodisiac’. Not enough to retire on. I’m sensible you see and was only making £2.50 each way bets – a term I now finally understand. The sport itself happens very quickly, like so many good things in life eh? But the excitement is enormous, especially if you’ve backed a winner and it requires little attention giving you more time to have a good laugh and socialise, maybe not for the professionals, but for a novice like me it was a good excuse to get dressed up and have a memorable day out. To find out more about all things racy and future events go to www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk Remember, only bet what you can afford to lose!

jojo

Talking of gambling, I recently hosted a ladies night at Alea Casino and met some women who work for MYA cosmetic surgery – ‘Make Yourself Amazing’ on Lisbon Street. They gave me a new insight into the world of Botox – a product I thought people used to diminish age, to fill in the cracks so to speak, oh contraire! Botox I am told should actually be used as a preventative measure. Yes people – if your face is unable to move, unable to make frowns or show emotion then you have less chance of creating wrinkles in the first place. Genius! I never thought of it like that. Mind you I can’t see me booking myself in for any Botox or a boob job just yet, but I’ll never say, never. They do offer a non surgical procedure called Microdermabrasion, and it was described to me as the ultimate in exfoliation and apparently it leaves your face feeling as soft as a baby’s bottom - so I might be up for trying one of them some day soon. For more information about MYA and the services they offer please visit www.mya.co.uk If like me you don’t feel the need for plastic surgery just yet, then why not get yourself enrolled on a make up course courtesy of ghd™? Yes ghd™ has opened the doors to it’s style academy at Bridgewater Place, bringing you and I mere mortals the opportunity to master basic make up skills, styling, catwalk trends taking you through to full time fashionista status. Tuition will be expertly provided by the likes of celebrity stylist John Scott off of the telly and make up guru Daniel Sandlers. Imagine the secrets these guy’s have! We’ll all be looking drop dead gorgeous in no time - absolutely flawless! For more info on the courses on offer go to www.ghdhair.com/style-academy And finally – have you ever fancied doing something really amazing like climbing to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro? You have? Well you could make that fantasy a reality and you’d be helping a really good cause too. St Gemma’s hospice in Moortown, Leeds is looking for volunteers to do exactly that! If this is up your street then you need to email Francine Shilton, francines@st-gemma.co.uk That’s all for now – going to book myself on a ghd make up course as my face is in serious need of updating and remember you can listen to me and my boys on Hirsty’s Daily Dose on FM and DAB in Yorkshire and London – and across the nation on Sky channel 0112, and Virgin Media as well – phew! City Dweller EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

LOOK NORTH’S CHRIS T EXCLUSIVELY TO CITY This month City Dweller caught up with Christa Ackroyd at the BBC Leeds Studio to talk about life in Yorkshire, working at Look North and looking back at her impressive career in journalism spanning more than 30 years. What is a typical day at Look North? “I don’t have a typical day here at Look North, every day is different – which I love. When I come to work I never know what each day will bring, I couldn’t bare the thought of a day that was organised from start to finish. Look North is what I do, I live and breathe it and my mobile is never switched off for a second.” Look North sometimes cover distressing and sad stories – how do you compose yourself when on screen when these stories arise? “I see my job as a great privilege, and I am in a powerful position for conveying a story to the thousands of viewers that watch Look North every evening. I have a responsibility for getting the story across without showing too much of my own emotions. However many of the stories that we cover do effect me, I am a very transparent broadcaster and its clear to see my emotions on screen – however I always try and keep composed. I’ve been broadcasting in Yorkshire for 32 years and I started out covering the Yorkshire Ripper story, since then I’ve reported on other tragic events such as the Selby train crash and Hillsborough, all of which were very emotional. I never underestimate a story.” “On a positive note there is also a nice side to the job, I get to meet a lot of remarkable people. I love broadcasting to Yorkshire, where I was brought up, I love everything about Yorkshire.” Tell us about your relationship with your fellow presenter ‘Harry Gration’ “Harry and I have an on screen marriage – I think we will be coming up to our silver wedding anniversary soon. I’m like the nagging wife and Harry is the supportive husband.” Christa laughs “We are great friends and we have known each other for over 30 years, we always text each other – although Harry is hopeless at texting - Fact!”

“I love broadcasting to Yorkshire, where I was brought up, I love everything about Yorkshire.” Over the years who has been your favourite guest? “I get a buzz each week from interviewing real people who find themselves in extraordinary situations – not usually famous people. There will always be someone or something that takes my breathe away. Jane Tomlinson for instance, she started out as a normal person, but became famous for her amazing actions.” “I couldn’t imagine not doing the job that I do.” City Dweller | 16

Would you ever consider going on a reality TV show? “I would be horrendous on a reality TV show, I don’t think I would ever consider going on one of the reality TV shows you see on the box these days. I did however take part in the first ever reality TV show before the likes of Big Brother & strictly come dancing came along. It was a TV show called ‘Deadline’ which was a C4 channel that went out in 1996 – it was a programme that documented the true story of a news programme, both myself and Richard Whitley took part. If I’m honest it wasn’t very exciting at the time.” “If I had to take part in a reality TV show, then I would like to do something that relates to the countryside, talking to ordinary people about living in the country. I enjoy being on the TV but I never watch myself back, and over the years I have never saved any of the videos documenting what I’ve done. If I’m honest, I cringe when I look back at myself on TV. One thing I do have that relates to reality TV – is a picture of Marco Pierre White, which hangs in my kitchen – I love him.” What do you do to relax after a hard day at the office? “My hobbies include cooking, doing cookery courses, working on my allotment and horses – I own one horse. I cook fanatically, sometimes cooking till 2.00 in the morning, I’m passionate about good food. I don’t enjoy walking often as it always gives me too much time to think, which I don’t like because I never stop – I’m always on the go. I am obsessed with everything Yorkshire – sometimes I’ll drive 60 miles to go to a local Yorkshire butcher, for fresh local produce. I never eat ready meals – I always start my meals from scratch. Other interests include gardening and decorating, anything to keep me active.” Where do you like to go on holiday? “My favourite place is North Yorkshire, it wouldn’t bother me if I never went abroad again. I dislike the sun which keeps me young.” “I regularly go to Chatsworth, Castle Howard and I love Whitby. Whitby is a lovely place, its not snobbish! I love Whitby Fish ‘n’ chips!!” Is there anything else you wish to share with the City Dweller readers? “Yes, just to say that you can never get too conceited in Yorkshire. A few years ago, I remember it was a cold night and me and my friend went into a local pub. Whilst in the pub a guy came over to us stating that he recognised me – he asked it I worked at the local fruit ‘n’ veg shop. I just went along with it but as we were leaving he came back over and said - For a moment I thought you were the woman who reads the news – but I’ve met her already, and she’s dog rough” Christa Laughs!

Leeds PeoPLe invited to have their say on Leeds fLood scheme People in Leeds will be asked for their opinion on proposals for tackling flooding from the River Aire when the Environment Agency and Leeds City Council launch their consultation this month. The city currently has no formal flood defences from the River Aire and the proposed flood alleviation scheme could be one of the largest ever built in the country. Three consultation events will be held across Leeds from May 27 where people will have the opportunity to see the different types of defences being proposed, and the planned locations. Environment Agency development manager Martin Slater said: “Leeds has flooded several times during the last ten years, and this risk is likely to increase as our climate changes. Our outline plans would benefit thousands of people but there is a long way to go before we have all the permissions in place, and there is no guarantee of funding. “We will be taking people’s views into account before the final design is submitted for government approval. While funding

Councillor Andrew Carter Leader of Leeds City Counci

is not guaranteed, we and the council are working closely to ensure that the strongest possible case is made for funding.” Using a mixture of materials, the plans will be a combination of embankments, raised walls and landscaping. However, existing buildings and walls will be adapted where possible so that new structures will be unnecessary in many places. The scheme has been designed with climate change in mind. The scale and complexity of the plans is necessary to ensure that Leeds is best placed to deal with rising river levels and the likelihood of more intense rain as our climate changes. Councillor Andrew Carter, leader of Leeds City Council said: “Protecting the centre of Leeds from potentially devastating flooding has got to be a priority and that’s why this scheme is so important - but it must complement the city centre. “It’s vital our residents have the opportunity to look at the proposals and comment on them. “I encourage them to go along to one of the consultation events or take the time to view the

plans at the central library from June onwards.” The formal consultation will start from May 8 to July 3 however people can submit their views after this date and they will still be considered up until September when the Environment Agency is to hold an internal review of the plans. Sun 7th June - Tues 9th June Milford Sports Club Beecroft Street, Kirkstall, LS5 3AS After these dates, a static exhibition of the proposals will be at Leeds Library from the beginning of June to the end of September. People can email: leeds.scheme@environment-agency.gov.uk

City Dweller LEEDS WEG

BOGOF...! ”You buy one you get one free!” Yes you do and yes I am the new face of Safestyle UK, well I am actually the old face as I filmed the Safestyle UK adverts a year ago and it seems from all the people who have mentioned it that they are rerunning them! PLUS I am not an actress and most definitely not an opera singer however you may be excused for thinking this as I am ‘gracing’ the front cover of Leeds Grand Theatre magazine and posters this month as I had a modelling job for them a few weeks ago. Also check out Channel M on Thursday’s 8pm as I am presenting a new Fashion programme called Boohoo Style Fix. Onto my other half - third year in a row Leeds United have made it into the play offs, it better had be third time lucky as I nearly had an anurism last year watching them at Wembley, they do have a great team this year and hopefully Jermaine will be super fit, as last year, not many people know, he had a steroid injection in his ankle days before the game so wasn’t on top form bless him. I got a surprise present this week, four tickets to go and see Girls Aloud in Manchester, I’m certainly not a superfan but it’s good innocent pop and I do like their new stylist! So off I went with three friends and really enjoyed myself, all the girls have amazing six packs or some serious bronzer contouring, which I know they do! Either way I was seriously put out when I told my best friend that “I’ll have one of those in 4 weeks”, the six pack or at least hard washboard stomach for our holiday and she laughed at me - out loud! SO... I’ve joined a gym after three years and intend to show

you the results of my time there and give you some top tips from my personal trainer, saving you a few bob to help you get a tight tummy for your holidays too. I’ve joined Nuffield Health, Fitness and Wellness Centre in Guiseley, it’s the only place that do a full Vi1 full body health assessment and I thought I should get one, I’ve had my cholesterol done, blood sugar, BMI, body fat the lot. My move of the month is Hamstrings...hello!! Mine have metamorphosised into marshmallow so I wanted to see them again, this is a seriously great exercise for them, you can do it at home on the sofa or with a Swiss ball, check out the photo for a vague idea! My business Ology Kids Casting is going from strength to strength, we have children in castings for Waterloo Road, McDonald’s TV commercials, Tesco adverts and more this week so fingers crossed for all you little superstars. For more information about upcoming assessment days call 0113 347 0121 or email laura@ologykidscasting.com. Due to high demand we are now taking up to ages 21, students contact us!

CITY DWELLER’S MARK HUGHES - CELEBRITY HEALTH & FITNESS COACH

‘THE FASTEST WAY TO GET INTO SHAPE GUARANTEED’ Whether training for performance, looks or just general well being. Keep in mind this simple formula. 80% NUTRITION + 20% TRAINING = SUCCESS Nutrition is the corner stone to every healthy goal. It is the foundation of building a great physique. There are a million things I could write about health & fitness but I want to start with the absolute basics.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

So eat well and often. Processed foods are everywhere in our lives. Every food store, newsagents, train station and work place is full of junk food.

YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN

You wouldn’t put diesel into a jet engine. Only the best will do for performance. If you want the best for your body’s performance and aesthetics you need to put the best in! Go for foods that are UNPROCESSED and ORGANIC if possible. Clear out the crap food in your home! You know what I am talking about! Those mayonnaise pots, the white bread, the fizzy pop, the biscuit tin and all the rest of the junk that does nothing positive for your body. Swap your sugary breakfast cereal for organic eggs or no added sugar muesli. Swap your subway sandwich for a fresh chicken salad. Exchange your cheap vegetable oil for Extra Virgin Olive oil. Banish your chocolate bars and eat fruits and nuts instead.

UPGRADE YOUR FOOD, UPGRADE YOUR BODY, AND UPGRADE YOUR LIFE! Follow these habits to ensure great nutrition and health:

1 Always eat a nutritious breakfast, an omelet is my favourite 2 Eat every 2-3 hours - NO MATTER WHAT 3 Eat vegetables with every meal. Limit fruit to 1 or 2 meals a day as the simple sugars in the fruits are easily converted to fat. 4 Eat a source of protein with every meal. That’s right; protein helps build lean muscle but also burn fat! 5 Eat carbohydrates only after training or sometimes for breakfast. Yes, I really did say that. 6 Ensure you eat plenty of healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocados and olives. 7 BANISH CALORIE CONTAINING DRINKS! Drinks containing calories like fruit juice, fizzy drinks and everything else in between encourages fat storage. The sugars in these drinks are very quickly absorbed into the blood stream and can cause a sugar spike. When the sugar spike is detected the excess sugar is turned into fat and you can get an ‘energy crash’.

A SUPER LEAGUE MAGIC WEEKEND Nearly 60,000 fans enjoyed yet another superb spectacle as engage Super League’s Magic Weekend rolled in to Edinburgh delivering seven superb games and an action packed two days of fun for the whole family. An aggregate attendance of 59,749 watched the full round of engage Super League matches which were played at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh. Nigel Wood, the RFL’s Chief Executive, said: “Once again Rugby League fans have turned out in force to support their game and hopefully had a great weekend all round in the Scottish capital. I am sure they will have left a lasting impression on our hosts who have been extremely welcoming. Rugby League supporters are extremely passionate about their sport and they should be proud that very few sports could put on an event like this where 14 sets of supporters can mix together over one weekend whilst watching the sport they all love. “The Magic Weekend is all about putting on a great showcase for supporters in a destination city and our partners in Scotland have been extremely supportive in putting on this great event enabling us to provide far more entertainment for the fans then ever before. Planning for next year’s Magic Weekend in Edinburgh will start straight away and the starting point will be to seek feedback from clubs and supporters so that in 2010 this event is even bigger and better.” Scottish Rugby Chief Executive Gordon McKie praised the event’s success and announced he was looking forward to welcoming back the ‘Magic Weekend’ to Murrayfield in 12 month’s time.

McKie said: “We were extremely pleased to be able to host such a colourful and entertaining event with nearly 60,000 people enjoying the Scottish sunshine and a memorable weekend of Rugby League. We consider Murrayfield to be a premier European venue and it is encouraging to see so many newcomers to the stadium enjoy the facilities over the two days. We are proud of our blossoming relationship with RFL and our partners, EventScotland, VisitScotland and City of Edinburgh Council we look forward to building upon this year’s success when the event takes place here in 2010.” It is estimated that one in 10 Magic Weekend attendees were from Scotland, a figure that the RFL’s Nigel Wood believes shows there is a real appetite north of the border for Rugby League. Wood said: “Scotland’s performance in last year’s World Cup did a lot to raise awareness of Rugby League in this country and the fact that more than 6,000 Scots have attended this event will add to the momentum. The media coverage in Scotland covering the Magic Weekend has been excellent and we are expanding our development team up here to turn the increased interest in the sport into more participants. And, who knows in years to come we may see a Scottish team playing in the Championship or Super League as a result of what we’ve started this year?” Top class Rugby League will return to Scotland this autumn when Steve McCormack’s side compete in the European Cup featuring six nations – Ireland, Lebanon, Russia, Scotland, Serbia and Wales.

Leeds Rugby Chief Executive Gary Hetherington and Leeds Rugby Foundation Chairman David Oxley explained about the importance of the Re-engage Project and heard about how it worked from those involved. Chris Grayling said: “Anti-social behaviour is one of the issues that has a real impact on people’s lives. I was pleased to be able to hear about the great work being done by the Leeds Rugby Foundation.

“Initiatives like the Re-engage Project can help both those who suffer because of anti-social behaviour and those who, without this project, would be those causing problems.” Chris Grayling was accompanied by Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Leeds North West, Julia Mulligan. She added: “Projects like this can have a positive impact on lives right across Leeds and I am committed to supporting it now and in the future.”

LEEDS UNITED BOSS PRAISES THE FANS AFTER DEFEAT AT ELLAND ROAD

No sooner had the final whistle sounded the end of Leeds United’s unsuccessful League One campaign, than Elland Road chairman Ken Bates ushered in the 2009/2010 season. Leeds United suffered Play-Off semi-final heartbreak at the hands of Millwall, losing 2-1 on aggregate to the London club, but Bates and manager Simon Grayson were quick to turn their attentions to the forthcoming campaign. “Simon (Grayson) came in to see me afterwards and we went through every player on the books and what we want to do,” the Leeds chairman said. “I had a staff meeting first thing on Friday morning and I told them: ‘Last night has gone. We’re now planning for promotion next season, and that planning starts now. This is the first day of our title-winning season.’

mind the Play-Offs. I’m extremely proud of the players and the staff, and what they’ve done over the past few months. When we came in December anything could have happened. We could have dwindled away, but we galvanised them and we’ve lost two in 17. If you have a run like that at this stage and you don’t get promoted you are probably very unlucky, but credit to them.”

“We had a traumatic season because for the second one in succession we had a change of manager which is always unsettling. But next season we start properly. We have a good manager, a good playing staff which will be strengthened and great fans. We’re very lucky here. We have a passionate fan base, we have big plans for the club, and we’ve had a set-back. We are a year behind schedule, but we’ll put that right next season.”

Both manager and chairman were also quick to praise the support of the Leeds. Over 37,000 turned out for the Play-Off semi-final – the highest Football League crowd of the season – and Leeds were afforded a standing ovation in defeat against Millwall.

The manager was also looking ahead in positive and insists that his players should use their nearmiss as inspiration next term. “In the end, we came up short against Millwall over two games but it wasn’t through lack of effort,” said Grayson. “It was a very quiet dressing room afterwards, but we have to use it as motivation. Some of them have been through it, but they’ll all stick together. “We don’t deserve to be in this league, but we are. Look at our fans. They were outstanding, and the reception at the end of the Millwall game meant so much. “We’ve fallen short, but we’ll be back. We’d love to be in the Championship, but we’re not and we’ll properly and we set our sights higher for next season.” The manager has already drawn up his plans for the 2009/2010 season and his message to the players immediately after the final whistle was that automatic promotion will be the aim next term. “We have to start positively and make sure we get promoted,” he said. “It was difficult to take immediately afterwards, but we’ll use it as an inspiration to straight up. We’ll use the Millwall experience to be better and stronger and come back and win automatic promotion, never

“The support was unbelievable yet again and I can’t thank them enough,” Grayson said. “The reception at the end meant a lot. Since the day I walked through the door in December the fans have been with us every step of the way. I think the fans appreciate what we’ve done as a group, and that’s how we will do it next year by all sticking together as a group. The fans knew we’d had a go at it. The fans have been outstanding both at Elland Road and away, and I’m more disappointed that we couldn’t reward them, but we’ll all come back stronger.”

The United chairman was also quick to praise what he described as “the best fans I’ve ever seen. “I have nothing but praise for the fans,” he added. “The players were given a standing ovation and to hear them chanting ‘There’s only one Simon Grayson’ was very encouraging as well. I have to say these fans are the best I’ve ever seen in football. They’ve had nothing to celebrate, but they’ve been fantastic.”
