The speed of onset is also variable from days to months depending on the type of infection. Some infections appear and then seem to hide away for sometime such as herpes and genital warts. HIV can come on slowly, only becoming apparent when conditions associated with a compromised immune system are found in hitherto healthy individuals.

These include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, genital warts, syphilis and of course HIV. They can present in a variety of ways from discomfort and discharge, blisters and ulcers, to non specific abdominal or pelvic pain. Sometimes there are few symptoms. In gonorrhoea for example up to 50% of women and 10% of men may have no symptoms at all and therefore be unaware that they can pass it on.

So, Christmas has been and gone once again, and now we’re in the beginning of not just another year, but another decade...so happy new decade! If, like me, the thought of hitting the sales on Boxing day, before the turkey and stuffing had been given the chance to digest, put the fear of God into you... fear not! Why is it that a sequin mini dress after the New Year becomes so unattractive? Let’s face it, what you’re really missing out on is buying up the rubbish that is already “sooo last season”, that nobody else wanted when it was on trend! You’ll be glad you held on to your money! So you may have missed out on a designer label at a knockdown price, but Topshop will be your saviour with its new London Fashion Week designer collaborations this season. Last year, the Christopher Kane collection was an instant sell out. This year, if you can hold onto your stash of Christmas cash for a little bit longer, you can have the pick of Ann-Sofie Back or Jonathan Saunders by the end of January, or Ashish’s Rhianna-inspired collection in early February.

• Look out for the slashed jumper dresses from Ann-Sofie Back and the panelled denim pieces from Jonathan Saunders, but you might want to start queuing for the Ashish leather jacket with studded shoulders...this will be the one on Ebay for three times the price!

City travel planning a break in 2010 Now we’re into 2010, lots of people are looking at getting away with their loved one for Valentine’s Day and, with World Cup fever mounting, I have some superb packages to go see our lads play in South Africa in June.

windSor - Visit beautiful and historic Windsor, home of

the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. The town offers great shopping and fine dining and a one night stay at the 4* Burnham Beeches hotel is £99.00 per person including breakfast and a seven course Valentine’s dinner on the night of 13th February. A glass of champagne, surprise gift and chocolates are complimentary upon arrival. Burnham Beeches is in an idyllic countryside setting with a huge garden and is close to the attractions of Windsor with health spa, indoor heated pool, 8-hole golf course and tennis courts as well as the AA rosette awarded restaurant.

MarbeLLa - For a little February warmth take a trip to

Marbella and indulge in fine dining and authentic Andalucian fayre on a two night blissful retreat to Spain’s Mediterranean jewel. Staying at the 5* Ritz-Carlton Villa Padierna is from £399.00 in a classic room with breakfast. This exclusive venue combines the best of spa, golf and Spanish gastronomy in a magnificent setting with views out to the Mediterranean, Africa and Gibraltar. Although it’s not going to be baking hot at this time of year, the Costa del Sol boasts the highest annual sunshine record of anywhere on the Med so if you fancy a couple of days in shorts and t-shirt this is the place to head. Prices include flights from Leeds with Jet2 based on current airfares.

LincoLnShire - Lincolnshire boasts a wonderful,

Prague -

Prague has long been one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe; it boasts picturesque medieval cobbled streets, gothic churches, beautiful snow covered bridges and a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. I was here last June for the first time and we all said what a magical place it must be in the winter. Sip hot mulled wine on world famous Wenceslas Square and visit one of many superb museums, art galleries and concert halls. Or for something a bit different take a city tour on a bike for a different take on this lovely city. The exceptional Mandarin Oriental has been converted from a former 14th century monastery in the heart of the city with a sumptuous spa and contemporary dining. Departing on 13th February for two nights, the price is from £369.00 per person including Jet2 flights from Leeds and staying in a superior room on a bed and breakfast basis. If you’re heading there already check out these wonderful people for the bike tours – www.prahabike.cz.

San FranciSco, L.a and VegaS from £699pp - Three great cities - one great price

Spend three nights in beautiful San Francisco, three nights in Los Angeles and three nights in Las Vegas and enjoy the sights and sounds of some of America’s most vibrant and popular destinations. Finally what could be more romantic than watching England win the World Cup?! I have some excellent packages covering all of the matches: go see one of England’s first round games against the USA, Algeria and/or Slovenia. Serial awardwinning airline Emirates has packages to see any or all of these games with five nights’ accommodation in Cape Town, flights from Manchester, airport transfers and arrangements to get you to and from the stadiums as well as the match tickets themselves from £2419.00 per person based on two adults sharing a room. Or see two matches from £3499.00 per person with BA flights to Johannesburg and ten nights’ stay in Centurion close to the leafy suburb of Sandton, this price includes match tickets and transportation down to Cape Town for the match against Algeria, and to Port Elizabeth for the Slovenia game.

The match tickets are being sold with five nights’ accommodation per game; you can go for a shorter duration if you wish however accommodation needs to be paid for the five nights per match. In addition there’ll be the opportunity to buy tickets for other countries’ matches from March once they have a clear picture on how many have been sold in the respective countries. This is a superb opportunity to experience the second greatest show on earth (London 2012 being the greatest of course!) and you can combine it with a world class safari, a tour of the winelands or travel the renowned Garden Route along the south coast. For those wanting to see the World Cup final there’s a three-night package starting from £3964.00pp based on staying in Cape Town with all transfers included or be at both semifinals and the final from £7947.00 per person. A cold start to 2010 but lots of birds! The cold snap saw City Dwellers learning a new walk along the icy paths around the river. Swapping Gucci and Oliver Sweeny’s for wellies and walking boots meant that the bars saw many a dweller in a totally different light! Some even reduced themselves to wearing silly woolly hats with ear flaps…but enough of Jonathan Smith. (find his picture on the City Dweller Facebook page)

Fifteen Tufted Ducks put in an appearance for two days on 9 and 10 January….although the City Dweller birthday crowd missed them on the 10th! These diving ducks are common in the UK and good numbers can be seen around Thwaites Mill, but I have never seen so many on the city part of the river. Gulls can be boring for many people but the wier produced four species in taking roost. These small one day in January. black and white birds adorn There was an increase in the tree like Christmas definitely Black Headed Gulls,up to decorations, 100 on the wier. These gulls worth a look!

Let’s hope these City DweLLers stay

Goosanders are annual winter visitors to the river and these large, fish eating ducks put on a good show around the Wier. The males appear black and white but on closer inspection the head is actually gloss dark green. On some of the brief sunnier days these birds look stunning. The females are grey backed with a reddish/ brown head…you need to look a bit harder for these. City Dweller | 10

Many City Dwellers will have seen the odd Pied Wagtail while walking along the river. In winter these birds seek out a communal roost to rest overnight. There is a single Alder tree between the entrance to Leeds Bus Station and Millgarth Police Station. If you take a look in this tree after dark you will see around 500 Pied Wagtails

The Thrushes The UK has been invaded! Thousands of Thrushes from Scandinavia and Siberia have sought refuge in the UK to escape the weather in their usual wintering grounds. Fieldfares, Redwingsand Mistle Thrushes can be seen in huge flocks in fields and areas of berry bearing bushes just about anywhere. They do not stay long….as soon as they have stripped the bushes of all berries they move on. Flocks of 100s have been seen flying high over the apartments. I saw 20 Fieldfares, three Redwings and three Mistle Thrushes stripping berries from an ash tree in the Parish church at 8.30am on the 11th January…they had eaten the lot by noon.

Arun or Saengarun (her full name, meaning sunrise) has been cooking Thai food all her life. Saengarun started cooking for the people who worked on her Grandmothers farm. Since moving to the UK she has been the head chef in the majority of the Thai restaurants in Leeds. Saengarun Thai Restaurant is probably the most authentic tasting Thai food available in Yorkshire! Just ask around in the Thai community and Lots of Thai people including many students know of her food and come to sample and relenquish in the great tasting food Saengarun prepares ,a taste not often found outside of Thailand! Saengarun was recently Awarded a certificate of excellence from the AAA good food guide and a review from the Yokshire Post! The Hilton hotel personally recommends the foods in the Saengarun Thai Restaurant. Her most popular dishes amongst the Thai’s are her noodle soups yen ta fo and joo dee, som tam gai, a shredded papaya salad served with Thai syle BBQ chicken and sticky rice and goong Laos! So it’s year three of the Northern Art Prize and after attending the preview (at which sponsors City Inn rendered enough alcohol to sink a barge!) I returned to the overly crowded entrance of Leeds City Art Gallery to await the announcement of the winner. It wasn’t a colossal shock to learn that Pavel Buchler scooped up first place, but admittedly I’m not a fan. Diamonds in ashtrays, two tiny pencils in a perspex case? Now I’m sure the ‘powers that be’ of the art world are preparing to smite me down as I type but I just don’t get it, although I have to make an exception for his piece ‘Eclipse’. The nine 1950s slide projectors casting circles of light onto the wall is rather stunning.

the hand off whoever is holding that wonderful little drawing, as I assure you it will be worth a lot of money one day. Other finalists were Matt Stokes (whose film installation ‘These are the days’ bagged him the public vote) and collaborative pair Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson. The exhibition continues until 21st February so I recommend taking a wander down, if only to perfect your head banging in Stokes’ mosh pit! Until next time… Written by - Amy Bewick Artsmix Market Development Manager

I was more than slightly disappointed that fellow Leeds Met graduate Rachel Goodyear not only didn’t collect the £16,500 cheque, but didn’t even win the public vote. A few glasses of vino into the evening and I find myself stood next to Goodyear on the steps of the Art Gallery divulging to her my dissatisfaction at her not having won. I’m a huge fan of Rachel’s dark, twisted, yet beautiful drawings and utterly gutted that my Rachel Goodyear book didn’t arrive in time for the awards. Sad I know, but I rather wanted an autograph. Rachel’s work is massively sought after from international collectors. If the opportunity ever arises to purchase an original Goodyear bite

As I ease myself gently into the armchair of the new decade and try to get comfortable, I realise that there is something unsettling stirring in the air around me that I can’t quite fathom. It is distracting but still very welcome… It is the expectation of the new, the possible and the unexplored! This is no time for plumping down into the cosy fabric of slovenliness and watching life pass us by on the television, no matter how captivating the latest ‘I was once a celebrity and now I’m in fat club, dancing for survival’ is. This is the beginning of the 2010s and this is our era! We are fortunate enough to have witnessed and learned from the highlights and armpits of past decades, so we are equipped with retro paraphernalia and cliff notes to steer us towards our future. Matters not if the experiences were secondhand as others have left a media trail consisting of tie-dyed t-shirts, acid faces, lava lamps, shoulder pads, bandanas, luminous ankle warmers and Terry Wogan, to guide us through it all again. Of course, there is always the inevitable circle of life so pause the television and the eight track may make a reappearance, but really, should we rest on our laurels and wait patiently for the hippy/ punk/ disco/ soul/ rave/ grunge/ indie/ electro revamp to happen? We need to jump up, run into the strobe lights of life, and shout…Show me the future and make mine inspirational! Or at least make it fullbodied, sumptuous, and full of potential!

Yorkshire’s finest Swinton Park, the quintessential English retreat, this luxury 17th century castle hotel doesn’t disappoint, particularly on curb appeal! Driving through the quaint country village of Masham just around an hour from Leeds we turn the corner and are greeted by an incredibly grand castle, beautifully manicured grounds and a winding half mile driveway. We were met at the entrance by David the head porter who chivalrously opened my door, took our bags to reception and proceeded to park the car in the nearby car park. Immediately impressed. The whole place has a very relaxed ambience, with virtually no one around we effortlessly checked in and were escorted to our room.

Your Match of the Day!

The Leeds United Spring Wedding Show FREE ENTRY 11AM-4PM

The spa had been booked for us not long after check in and is exclusive use, just the two of us, with a jacuzzi, sauna, showers and seating area it was utterly perfect to relax as it took away the normal reluctance of entering the public sauna incase you feel obliged to stay once you see there’s only a hefty, hairy sweaty man with a welcome grin! It was infact very romantic. I felt like lady of the manor walking around this huge stately home in my dressing gown especially as the staff seem to encourage this demeanor giving such respect and awareness of privacy like I have never experienced in hotels other than the Far East. There is usually

always somebody who has to ask for Jermaine’s autograph or picture wherever we go, even the staff in many other hotels so this really was refreshing and allowed us to completely relax. Our room, the Whitby, was so welcoming, a canopied king size bed, the latest hip magazines, handmade chocolates asking to be devoured along with the chilled bottle of champagne. I was in sensory overload, the subtle affluent smell of Jo Malone products which were complimentary with the room, wafted as we walked in, the warmth from the radiators exaggerated the fresh smell of the Spa opposite, it was all just divine. The owners Mark and Felicity CunliffeLister have a real eye for attention to detail, providing free gin and brandy with mixers to enjoy before dinner and even alka seltzer to ease the headache after! Plus our dog, whom we were allowed to take was pampered, given a dog bed, bowls and treats, this is a real plus a most upmarket hotels don’t allow this. Some of the other rooms aren’t decorated to my taste, being a little dated however there are enough rooms that one will be to your individual taste I’m sure and ours was just perfect....

HIV can come on slowly, only becoming apparent when conditions associated with a compromised immune system are found in hitherto healthy individuals. Of course taking precautions, like using condoms, is always the best option but mistakes/accidents can happen. If you are worried about any of the above or your sexual health in general there is help at hand! You can see your GP to discuss your concerns and they may well refer you on to the Local Genito-Urinary- Medicine ( GUM ) department, in our case this is based at the LGI, for further assessment.

There is as always plenty of helpful advice on the web. • www.leedssexualhealth.com - A fantastic site covering every aspect from testing to contraception. Well worth a look.

• www.leedsth.nhs.uk/sites/sexual_health/index - NHS sexual health clinic based at the LGI.

• www.mesmac.co.uk - Sexual health information and resources

for gay men in the north of England.

It is safe to say that most of us go to the dentist regularly for check-ups to ensure we maintain healthy teeth and gums, rather than only visiting when we have toothache. It is rather strange therefore that the same does not apply to our bodies. The only time most of us contemplate having treatment is when we have a twinge, niggle or acute pain. Yet having regular check-ups helps you continue to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you visit one of our fully qualified team of chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists at Freedom Back Clinics in Leeds city centre, we can give you a free spinal health check and identify any potential problems you might experience in the future. We can then provide treatment to put them right.

Some people learn to live with a bit of discomfort but this is a big mistake. The slightest pain is a warning from your body. You need to act upon it quickly so that it does not lead to longterm damage and lifelong pain. The treatment and manipulation we give can also lead to you being more effective in the gym by advising you on which exercises you need to do to strengthen potential weaknesses. But at Freedom Back Clinics we don’t just treat and help prevent pain, we also offer a variety of massages which will help you to relax, unwind, and relieve you of those stressful headaches many suffer from with such busy lives. And for those who want to feel refreshed after being hunched over a computer all day, then our ten-minute express massage for only £10 is perfect.

A big thanks to all those who have emailed in questions already. There has been a fantastic response. As these are on a wide variety of subjects I am grouping them together into topics and plan to cover a topic each issue. If there are any short questions I will try and answer them briefly at the end of each article.

Quick question - “I am a sufferer of cold sores and have tried many creams that are on the market, but none seem to work. Do you have any other suggestions?”

Quick answer - Recurrent or chronic cold sores often require treatment with oral anti-viral tablets, such as aciclovir, to keep the infection suppressed. See your GP for advice regarding this. If you have a question for Dr Jones please email him at: drjones@city-dweller.co.uk For further information please visit:

A DREAM COME TRUE For Hayley Tamaddon “It’s a dream come true for me to do this. Injury or no injury, you’ll have to drag me off the ice by my hair to stop me doing this show!” The ex-Emmerdale star reveals she had a secret schoolgirl crush on her skating partner when they grew up together in Blackpool – and now finally having the chance to dance with Daniel is a dream come true.

‘For me this is more than just another job, I’ve wanted to do this for such a long time and I dreamt about skating with Dan as a 12 year old,’ admits Hayley. ‘We met when I went to a little theatre school that was based in the back of the ice rink in Blackpool where Daniel trained. I used to be so wrapped up in the skating and would just stand and watch him and love it. I remember he used to have a massive bouffant hairdo which was hilarious and he wore big glasses too. I suppose he looked a bit like Harry Potter but with blond hair,’ she adds, laughing. ‘Not that I looked that great when I was that age. I had way too much curly hair and probably a monobrow if I remember correctly! ‘One day we got talking and he said I should give skating a go and but my mum wouldn’t let me so I used to just go and watch him doing his shows instead and we became really good mates. Actually, I remember once I auditioned for a little part in one of Dan’s shows because they wanted someone to stand in the middle of the ice on a podium and do some acting. I auditioned for it because I was desperate to skate with Dan and I had a bit of a secret crush on him truth be told when I was that age, but I never got the part. I really wanted to do it but my friend got it instead. So to have come all this way down the line and to finally be able to skate with him is just phenomenal. ‘We had a good few years when we were younger when we were together

every day and as adults we’ve seen each other every now and again. But now all these years later it just feels like we’ve gone full circle, we’ve fallen back into the same relationship and it’s so weird. Daniel keeps saying: ‘Every time I’m with you I feel naughty, I feel like we’re 12 again.’ Because all we do is laugh. I’m amazed we have actually got anything done. But spending so much time with Daniel after so long has been amazing and when we found out we were going to be partners on Dancing On Ice it was just the best news ever, it was unbelievable.’ Although Hayley says there wasn’t much laughter when she suffered her first major injury in the ice – in fact laughing was almost a physical impossibility: ‘We were trying a new lift over and over again and one time Dan went to put me down and my top half kind of stretched away from my bottom half and I heard this nasty pop. I couldn’t move and I could feel my back going into spasms which was horrible. What happened was that my muscles had popped away from my ribs and for about a week afterwards I was finding it difficult to breathe and I couldn’t cough or anything like that. Even now every time I go to laugh. I’m having to hold my sides because it’s so painful. And don’t even get me started on sneezing, that’s just impossible. ‘So it has been a nightmare and I can’t do any lifts for the time being, which is a bit of a shock to the system and your confidence does suffer when things like this start to go wrong. I never even knew your ribs could pop like that, but you’re using these muscles that you’ve never used before so I suppose your body just isn’t used to it. ‘Being injured has held me back from training properly which hasn’t helped my nerves and I’m just praying right now it gets better in time. There is no way I’m missing out on this experience because as I said earlier, it’s a dream come true for me to do this. Injury or no injury, you’ll have to drag me off the ice by my hair to stop me doing this show!’

FIGHTING FOR

M

Maddison...

addison Staveley was 3 years old on January 3rd. She was diagnosed with Cancer at the beginning of October 2009. She has a tumour in her bladder and when she was admitted to St James Hospital, the tumour was so big it filled her bladder and this had led to her having kidney failure.

After an OPERATION to relieve the pressure on her kidneys and drain away the excess build up of fluid, she stabilised and underwent several scans and operations, where it was confirmed the tumour in her bladder was what was called a Rhabdomyosarcoma. The consultants at St James Hospital have recommended her

for a different type of Radiotherapy called Proton Radiotherapy, which has a better chance of reducing the longer term side effects on the bowel, the womb, and the pelvic bone, which affects growth. This type of treatment can only be carried out on someone of Maddison’s age in America, this is why we have set up the MADDY FUND, to help raise much needed financial support and awareness.

The NHS can meet some of the cost but it’s also about a prolonged stay in America, expenses for hotels, that kind of thing. We will be organising a range of activities, which can be found on:-

What Does the leeDs city council Domestic Violence team Do?

michelle De souza - January 2010

are based with the council’s community safety unit and work across the city with a range of a: We agencies and community groups to increase understanding of domestic violence and promote good

practice. this involves working with children and young people to promote healthy relationships, delivering training to agency staff and working with organisations, such as health services and children’s services to ensure they are responding appropriately to victims and perpetrators.

What is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence can include physical assault, sexual and psychological abuse, financial exploitation and controlling behaviour. It can take place within all kinds of relationships but is mostly carried out by men against female partners. On average, one in four women experience domestic violence at some stage in their lives and every week, two women are killed by their current or former partners in England and Wales. The prevalence of domestic violence is the same among all groups and victims experience violence regardless of their class, age, race, disability, sexuality and lifestyle. Equally, perpetrators belong to all social, economic and ethnic groups. Domestic violence accounts for around a quarter of all violent crime. It affects the lives of tens of thousands of women and children every year and creates huge costs in health care, social services, policing, civil and criminal justice proceedings, refuge and housing provision, benefits and support services. It is estimated that in Leeds, domestic violence costs nearly sixty million pounds every year.

impact of Domestic Violence The impact of domestic violence affects everyone differently. Victims experiencing physical and sexual abuse may sustain injuries resulting in short term, long term or permanent damage. The experience of psychological abuse such as destructive criticism; breaking trust; refusing to communicate; forced isolation; threats and withholding money can lead to a range

contact us:

of negative effects on a person’s mental well being such as low self-esteem, lack of confidence, exhaustion, anxiety, confusion, disturbed patterns of eating and sleeping, drug and alcohol dependency, depression, self-harm and even suicide. When victims are forced to flee violence, the separation from family, children and friends can cause immense isolation and vulnerability. It can result in financial difficulties, limited access to employment and educational opportunities and the loss of valued personal possessions.

chilDren Every day thousands of children witness and experience violence. They may be coerced into participating in the violence or they may get caught up in the violence and be injured. Living with violence can create great stress and tensions for children. Fear of the abuse and uncertainty about who can be trusted, what secrets have to be kept and losing friends, all have a major impacts on children’s lives. Children may demonstrate emotional responses such as withdrawal, running away, disruptive behaviour or blaming themselves. Research has shown that children find it helpful to talk about the violence with friends, family and professionals they trust. Talking to children about the violence can assist them to make sense of what is happening and help them identify sources of support.

Why Don’t they leaVe? When a victim discloses they are experiencing domestic violence, it is common for people to question why they haven’t left the

situation. It is sometimes assumed that, because they’ve stayed, the abuse is not very serious or even that they like being abused. This leads to the victim having to explain and justify themselves and can make it less likely that they seek help. Leaving any relationship is rarely simple or straightforward and leaving a violent relationship poses even more complications. Victims may fear for their physical safety (they are most at risk of being murdered when they leave). Their confidence may well have been undermined by the violence and it may be difficult to make decisions or view leaving as an option. Unhelpful responses from family, friends and community members can make victims concerned that they will be isolated if they left. Disputes over child contact, housing and finances all increase the risks to victims.

supporting Victims It is important to believe what victims say and not blame them for the situation. A non-judgemental, supportive approach is the most effective way of helping. It is vital to discuss how the victim can make themselves as safe as possible and help them identify people they can trust to break down any sense of isolation and build protection and support networks. Assisting them to find out about services will keep them informed of all options. It may be necessary to support some victims over a long period of time and it is most effective to allow them to make their own decisions at their own pace. - LEEDS CITY COUNCIL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TEAM

Christmas is over and the snow has gone. How magical it was; it actually looked like Narnia where we live. Why is it though that pedestrians seem to feel they have a more dominant role in the highways hierarchy than cars when it snows, by always walking in the road and with the confidence and puffed out chest of a battery farmed, artificially injected turkey in December?

You can see me on the idents for Dreams beds between the adverts in Celebrity Big Brother, on the DFS and Batley Mill commercials and in photoshoots for Harveys, which were all great fun to film.

Last but by no means least, my hero is now Leeds’ hero after my other half only scored the winning goal to break a 29-year defeat record against Manchester Only to have a rather less dreadful United at Old Trafford - in the FA but still unpleasant fate of a slush Cup! shower from myself for their arrogance! I know it’s icy on the I’d just like to take a minute to pavement and difficult to walk on stick my tongue out good and but the road is for CARS! proper to all you fickle fans and journalists who have no idea So, back to the festivities. Just who Jermaine is as a person but before ‘the big guy’s birthday’ seem to think it’s your prerogative we went to London for a Beckford to make negative assumptions family do. There’s millions of and personal attacks at him and them that I’d never met so not too then put it in the media whilst intimidating for me! I latched on also doubting his ability at the to 76-year-old uncle, Steve, and top level, which he has proved plied him with whisky and coke - he’s capable of against the best so we had a ball! club in the world right now! I find older people so interesting to talk to, especially as I don’t have any grandparents anymore. The stories are like fantasy tales - just brilliant. By the end of the night he was telling Jermaine to make me his wife! Result! Maybe I should ply J with whisky?! I’ve been really busy with Ology Kids Casting and modelling this last month, with kids from my agency regularly appearing on Waterloo Road and in commercials such as Kenco coffee, Alton Towers and an anti-smoking campaign all in the last few weeks. I’m very proud of them.

Also, how can he prove it if he’s not playing with the top clubs? You may just get a promotion yourselves if you start focusing on the positives in life and people and change your negative attitudes! He’s a passionate, humble, funny gentleman with so many awards that we’re running out of room for them. I’m incredibly proud of him and his achievements and as for the future...one of the only things guaranteed in life is change.

“He’s a passionate, humble, funny gentleman” Love love love The snow! - make the most of it and take some beautiful picturesque snaps like Jermaine does on a regular occasion on the way to training, or drive into the Dales with some sledges or snowboards like we did. It’s not just for kids; we had a brilliant time. Make the most of the stunning surroundings just a short drive from the city. Mini satsumas - satsumas are my favourites at any time but check out these teeny-weeny ones from M&S! Perfect for dinner parties. Celebrity diets - it’s laughable to me; all these celebrity diets in gossip magazines, fair enough to them, they make a fortune but come on it’s not quantum physics - if you eat more calories than you burn, you’ll put weight on! Stop obsessing and enjoy life. I was obsessed with food for so long and, now I have no restrictions, I’m the lightest I’ve ever been and the happiest because it’s not even on my mind. Thank you cards - I was made to do this as a child to send to people for the Christmas and birthday presents I received and still do. I think it’s a lost tradition and I always appreciate a thank you, especially when someone’s taken the time out to write it. Make someone feel good today and say a heartfelt “thank you”. Until next time, good bye and take care...

Making the Most of life You want to enjoy life, and get the most out of it. Feeling good about the way you look plays a big part. Many of us would love to make a change to our body; we might want to alter something that’s always bothered us or look more like we did when we were younger. Cosmetic surgery is one way that can help make that change and that’s where we can help. Some of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures we carry out are:

• • • • • • • • •

Breast augmentation Breast uplift Breast reduction Liposuction Tummy tuck Facelift Eyelid surgery Ear correction Nose reshaping

Cosmetic surgery may be something you’ve been thinking about for a while now, so simply by making an enquiry you’ve already taken a big step towards your goal. Having cosmetic surgery is a big decision. Before deciding, it’s good to find out what’s involved. We are hosting several events over 2010 to help you decide if cosmetic surgery is the right choice for you. You can meet our expert consultants to find out more about a particular type of surgery you’re interested in and also meet our clinical support team including nurses and psychologists. All of our events are free and informal, but places are limited. Upcoming events you may want to consider include: •

Cosmetic open evening with Mr Fourie – Thursday 18th February 2010

Cosmetic open evening with Mr Liddington – Thursday 18th March 2010

for a limited period, these consultants are offering free consultations after the events (subject to review at the open evening).

“Paul Jones is giving City Dweller readers the chance to win the hottest club music and gets down and dirty with the latest album reviews”

Digital:Soul intro Welcome to Digital:Soul. This month sees Dennis Ferrer enter the light with his new track Hey Hey.

Strictly Rhythm 20 years. Remixed Album released Feb 1st 2010: 2 x CD, Download, 4 x Vinyl E.P. Think soul, think Motown. Think blues, think Chess Records. Think jazz, think Blue Note. Think house, think Strictly Rhythm. Twenty years. Now not many independent labels make it this far. Still fewer make it this far after an alliance with a major label, as Strictly Rhythm did for a short time. In house music it’s unknown. The first wave of house labels back in the 80s burned brightly but briefly and each successive wave featured its own equally temporal stars, all of them long gone or else grinding on as catalogue only zombie imprints.

Defected In The House London Defected’s world series has taken us to some of the finest destinations in the world - Miami, Amsterdam and Singapore to name a few. This latest compilation is again like no other and brings us back to the roots where Defected is based…London. So after 10 years of global clubland adventures Defected have brought us back to celebrate the city we love. Who better to compile and mix this compilation then, than London born and bred, chart topping, dancefloor destroying, and long time Defected aficionado ATFC. ATFC delivers two discs of the freshest worldwide house music which is complete with exclusives and classics sprinkled throughout the mix. CD1 includes the brand new ATFC release (‘Computer Love’) as well as an exclusive from

Dennis is no stranger to chart success, it was his mix of Fish Go Deep’s ‘The Cure And The Cause’ that pushed the track to its peak, whilst it was his mix that made Blaze’s ‘Most Precious Love’, get international acclaim with it slotting into the top 30 national chart performers. Dennis Ferrer’s new track Hey Hey is already being smashed all over the radio including Radio 1 with the likes of Annie Mac and Pete Tong. This track has been signed to Defected Records which is due for release March 2010. Expect some fantastic mixes for the Miami Music Conference.

During these twenty years it has been the music that made Strictly Rhythm. Indie labels are typically defined by one character, be that the DJ or producer that runs it or the one successful artist that overshadows all else, and their fortunes are umbilically linked. At Strictly, the shifting sands of musical trends became a strength. When Todd Terry, the label’s first profile producer upped camp, Roger Sanchez came through. Then there were DJ Pierre, Kenny Dope, Louie Vega, Erick Morillo, Armand Van Helden, all with their own sound, their own vision, their own way of doing what they do. Strictly’s ability to nurture and sustain producer talent led to hit-making acts; Barbara Tucker, Reel 2 Real, Ultra Naté and Wamdue Project who all scored major crossover hits in the 90s. These hits and those now iconic names of house are the stuff of Strictly.

Coming soon on Mark Brown’s CR2 label is Paul Harris vs Eurythmics – I want you, due for release in March and has been selling like hot cakes on white label. This cheeky track samples Eurythmics – Love Is A Stranger . This is set for big things so watch out. London’s Hot Chip have their new album coming in 2010 due to be released February 1st titled One Life Stand which includes mercury nominees The Invisible making an appearance along with post punk band The Heat.

hits, Reel’s 2 Real’s I Like To Move It, Ultra Naté’s Free and Wamdue Project’s King Of My Castle are joined by undisputed house classics Love & Happiness, Deep Inside, Reach and Follow Me, all updated with love by today’s leading lights. With this new anniversary album the label has invited some of the most contemporary and pioneering producers to rework the classics. Ground breakers such as Michel Cleis, Bob Sinclar, Mark Knight, Tiefschwarz & ATFC bring their contemporary interpretation of the tracks to the dance floor once again for a whole new generation of Strictly Rhythm followers.

Reduce a 700 odd strong catalogue to just 20. Tricky? Maybe so. But in truth, these revered classics pick themselves. The obvious crossover

Copyright (‘Someday’). Also included is the massive 2009 Ibiza smash ‘I Called U (The Conversation)’, a future house music anthem from Dennis Ferrer (‘Hey Hey’) alongside huge big room sounds from Steve Angello and Erick Morillo. CD2 kicks off with an exclusive new remix of Reboot’s 2009 hit ‘Enjoy Music’ by rising Italian / Shoreditch talent Riva Starr, Osunlade’s underground killer ‘Mirror Dance’, a brand new cut from DJ Gregory, Mark Knight and Underworlds epic ‘Downpipe’, ATFC’s remake of the Strictly Rhythm classic ‘Spark Da Meth’ before finishing on a classic from arguably London’s biggest dance music act; Basement Jaxx and their 1997 Brixton bomb ‘Fly Life’. This is a superb compilation which exposes some of the future hits for 2010. As well as this, the compilation will also include a Defected Records Guide To London, a comprehensive guide to the best clubs, bars, hotels, galleries and more.

This is seriously hot. Be warned your stereo might melt.

Fitness Goals:

How to make your Fitness Goals so you actually stick to tHem! Recently I read the excellent book ‘59 seconds: Think a little, Change a lot’ by Professor Richard Wiseman. The book shares techniques that require little thought but can change your life. The exercises are all supported by psychological study evidence. The book is excellent and covers many areas. One of the areas that piqued my interest was motivation. Motivation is essential when it comes to achieving any fitness goal. Want to run a marathon, want to get to 8% body fat, want to climb Everest? Well you better be darn motivated because if you’re not, Sky+ will win the battle of wills when you’re up against a 15 mile run, in the dark, when it’s snowing and everybody’s skiving off work to watch daytime TV. Ironically, sometimes when you really want something it’s difficult to actually get motivated to take the steps to achieve it. So when I came across the ‘Doublethink’ technique described in the book I quickly saw its potential for fitness goals. Gabrielle Oettingen from the University of Pennsylvania found that being optimistic about achieving your goals but also being realistic of the problems you may face is one of the most effective states of mind when trying to achieve a goal, she labeled the technique ‘Doublethink’ like the thought process described in George Orwell’s famous book, ‘1984’ . In order for your motivation to benefit from the ‘doublethink’ technique, grab a pen and paper and follow this easy exercise adapted from ’59 seconds: Think a little, Change a lot’.

1. What is your goal? Remember to make it a SMART goal, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time Bound

2. PotEntial bEnEfits & sEtbacks a) Write down one word that reflects an important way in

which your life would be better if you achieved your goal.

b) Write down one word that reflects a significant barrier standing in the way of achieving your goal.

c) Write down one word that reflects another important way

in which your life would be better if you achieved your goal.

d) Write down one word that reflects another significant barrier that stands in the way of you achieving your goal.

3. Elaboration • Elaborate your answer to question A, Imagine all the benefits

that would flow from this achievement.

• Elaborate your answer to question B, Imagine how the obstacle hinders achievement and the steps you would take to deal with it. • Elaborate your answer to question C, Imagine all the benefits that would flow from this achievement. • Elaborate your answer to question D, Imagine how the obstacle hinders achievement and the steps you would take to deal with it.

Now use this technique for your own goals and stick them up on a wall so you see them every day! www.mark-hughes.co.uk • Email: info@mark-hughes.co.uk - contact Mark for your own personal nutrition program! City Dweller | 27

o there I was pedalling away on a static bike in the gym, and there she was sitting on the bike next to me in her pink little spandex shorts and body-hugging matching t-shirt. Her straightened long peroxide blond hair was let loose all over her shoulder, her face plastered with stage make-up, her lips pouting even when gasping for air. And above all this, she was reading an OK magazine!

Socially I was a little annoyed but at least having her next to me is better than some 25 stone hairy guy who smelled like a fox. At least she’s pretty and was minding her own business, I thought to myself. Then something happened. She turned to me and smiled, so I smiled back. As I took my earpiece off, she started talking to me. ‘So it is Tiger innit? What does it all mean now?’

Now that’s the final straw! As the blood in my veins started boiling, I could feel the steam coming out of my ears. Being a Chinese living in this country, I was already quite sensitive towards all the stereotypes, and I couldn’t believe I was being a subject of stereotype right now. So I retaliated in a rather Ali G’s ‘Is Cos I is Chinese?’ manner. “Do I have a crystal ball or bamboo straw in my hands or something? Do I look like a fortune teller? I don’t know what your life is like in the year of the Tiger!” I growled at her. Obviously shocked, her lips started shaking, and her whole face turned into the same colour as her spandex. For a second there I thought she was going to cry. But instead she started to giggle, shaking her head left to right wildly. ‘Tiger…I meant Tiger Woods!’ she pointed at the big TV screen which was showing the latest headlines on the troubled golfer. ‘Ah, that Tiger…’ I was so embarrassed that I was struggling to choose my next words. Come on, say something intelligent so you don’t look as stupid, thought to myself. ‘Err, happy Chinese New Year’ I replied to my own disbelief. - Written by Kevin Yu

Kevin Sinfield believes in victory

at next month’s Gillete World Club Challenge v

Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield believes victory in next month’s Gillette World Club Challenge could provide the spur to the Engage Super League champions claiming a fourth successive title in 2010. The Rhinos meet Australian champions Melbourne Storm at Elland Road on Sunday February 28 when the inspirational loose forward expects Leeds to make amends for their defeat by Manly in the 2009 World Club Challenge at the same venue. After being beaten 28-20 by Manly, Leeds went off the boil by losing five of their next 10 games before recovering in time to complete an unprecedented hattrick of Engage Super League titles. “To get beat by Manly last year was a real disappointment for all of us so to have another crack at Melbourne is fantastic,” said Sinfield. “That defeat to Manly hurt us a lot, probably more than we envisaged at the time. We went on a losing run and our form was poor for eight weeks after that but thankfully it came good in the end and we’ve got another crack now.” Next month’s clash of the Engage Super League and NRL champions is a repeat of the 2008 World Club Challenge which saw the Rhinos run out 11-4 victors and Sinfield is hoping the British public get behind him and his teammates to spur them on to victory at Elland Road. “The talk between the boys has been all about Melbourne since we won the Grand Final,” said Sinfield. “I’m sure it will be another bruising encounter and hopefully the Leeds public and British Super League will get behind us and we can put on a show.” Sinfield is not underestimating a Melbourne team that contains the likes of Gillette Four Nations winners Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, Ryan Hoffmann and Cameron Smith, and believes that the four Engage Super League matches prior to meeting the NRL champions will prove pivotal to the destination of the Gillette World Club Challenge trophy. “I’ve heard some of the talk from their camp recently and they’re certainly up for it which is great because we are as well,” said the 29-year old, who was one of England’s shining lights in last year’s Gillette Four Nations. “The games before them in Super League are really important for us to get some combinations together and get back playing well together. It’s going to be a massive challenge.” Sinfield is hoping for a change of fortunes when he returns to Elland Road for the first time since England’s Gillette Four Nations defeat. The England International said: “I really enjoyed the Four Nations and obviously the disappointment is that you don’t get to share some celebrations with a group of guys that worked really hard in an international arena. “But it wasn’t to be, and to be back at Elland Road does hold some special memories for most of this group and hopefully we can create some more.” Tickets for the Gillette World Club Challenge at Elland Road on Sunday February 28 (6.30) are now available with prices starting from £20, or £10 concessions.
