City Dweller EXCLUSIVE U2 INTERVIEW

THE ULTIMATE U2 360 DEGREE WORLD TOUR ACCESS ALL AREAS PASS Bono, you are literally a few hours before show time. Do you have a set ritual on a gig day of the do’s and don’ts to maximise your performance? Bono: There are things I have learnt over the years, not to do. Not to set fire to yourself the night before, that would be one. Not to stay out late; last night I managed 3am, but I was being pulled by my Mrs. I was in somebody’s room, so there must have been some alcohol involved. I try and spend some quiet time just to think of the show, who’s coming, what city I am in, if there’s anyone there I need to get even with…no no... if there’s anybody I need to reconnect with. That’s important time. Adam, take me into the U2 dressing room when you get that all important knock on the door by the tour manager, who says “right guys, thirty minutes to go”. What’s happening in there, are you playing records, is it quiet, are you chatting amongst yourselves, do you go off in a corner to think about the forthcoming show, how does it work for you guys? Adam: That sounds really nice Billy, that picture you’re painting, I think it’s a bit more chaotic than that. People are taking care of last minute preparations to with technical stuff, equipment, lighting, wardrobe issues. There is a certain amount of drama, then it calms down in the last ten minutes and people say lets focus on the show. But we should play music, we have an enormous ghetto blaster but we don’t have anyone that knows how to use it. So, what would be the three crucial tunes that you would play on that ghetto blaster to get the blood pumping before you take that walk to the stage?

Adam: Oh I don’t know some Oasis to get ourselves in the mood, probably a little Marvin Gaye and some Stevie Wonder. Bono: This morning I heard Florence and The Machine, I just thought that it was the most incredible album, I could listen to that to prepare for tonight. You’re on stage Bono, the 360 degrees tour, the most spectacular rock show there has ever been. At what point do you do get a real feeling of enjoyment from it, does it happen 15 minutes, 20 minutes in? Bono: That’s an interesting question, at what point do you lose yourself, and your self-conscious? That’s really what it’s about, when you’re not really singing the song; the song is singing you, so to speak. It sounds pretentious, but really, what that means is, you disappear inside the song, it’s a really special feeling. I feel it’s a bit like a boxing match, you’re not up against the audience, you’re up against yourself. You can have some real issues with yourself, you’re throwing a few digs, its gets rough, and then there is a moment, not the same moment every night when you look around and you go “OK, there is something going on here”. Last night I said to the crowd, “I think something very special could happen tonight, I don’t know what that is, but that’s why we are here.”

“We have an enormous ghetto blaster but we don’t have anyone that knows how to use it.” Edge, I read a great quote from you once; you said “There is no point in being the biggest, unless you are also the best”. Does the 360 degree tour tick both sizable boxes in that respect? Edge: I think so; in all honesty I think there is nothing out there that comes close, it is the combination of the show itself and the actual hardware. The U2 audience is the best audience in rock and roll, so just to be there is an experience in itself. Our part of it, I like to think, is a big part of it, but in this show it is not as big a part as we would like to think. Larry, when you were a teenager long before you became the drummer of U2,who were the first few bands you went to see when you first started buying tickets and going to gigs yourself?

City Dweller EXCLUSIVE U2 INTERVIEW

“the ability to connect to the person at the very back of the stadium.” Larry: When I was younger I was in military style bands and we used to do summer tours around Ireland. That was my first taste, and I enjoyed playing in bandstands in the park. But there wasn’t a rock and roll show that I thought “That’s what I want to do”. I had already decided way before then that if I had the opportunity to play in a band of any size it was something that I was always going to enjoy. The earlier shows that I saw that made an impression were Thin Lizzy, with opening acts Boomtown Rats, Graham Parker and the Rumour. To see them outdoors in a stadium setting, to get a grasp of what it is to communicate to such a large group of people, and they were just amazing, They had great songs and a great sound, but it was the ability to connect to the person at the very back of the stadium, that was a show we took notice of. Bono: The Bruce Springsteen show of Wembley, which we always said was one of the greatest live shows we have ever seen. That was him in his heyday. To see Bruce at that point was mind blowing, what he was able to produce in the hall, that sense of everybody being totally unified behind the ideas, the songs and the sentiments of them, it was really a life changer. We are so used to seeing U2 playing some of the biggest gigs in the world, but they don’t come much bigger than playing at the inauguration for President Barack Obama. How do you get the call to play for the President of the United States? Larry: I’m not sure I know the details, I know that Bono had been asked to do something at the event and he wasn’t entirely comfortable about that, he asked the band that if the band were asked, would the band be interested in doing something. We all agreed that it would be the right thing to do, and then it happened. I don’t know what happened in the intervening period. It was pretty amazing to be an Irish band in the middle of everybody else. Was it very special Edge, to stand virtually on the stage where Martin Luther King made that incredibly historic “I have a dream” speech, and play your songs. Edge: It was an amazing moment. I had that bizarre sense of entering a dream, because as we walked out to look at the crowd, they were all around that famous reflective pond that reflects the Washington memorial. It was the exact same image that we had seen every night when we played the Martin Luther King rally footage at our shows. It was slightly strange, surreal, almost déjà vu. The Martin Luther King footage was in black and white, now it was in colour. To play “Pride (In the name of love)” in that context was a strange completing of the circle; the day was full of those. Barack Obama used “City of blinding lights” as one of his coming on songs for political rallies during the election campaign. So that also had a real resonance for us, but also for his people. Not being American did not seem to matter at that moment it was more about a communal sense of a dream having come true. You’re midway through the 360 degree world tour, which doesn’t get much bigger or much better, how do you top something like that, are you guys still ambitious? What would you like to do next?

Larry: We are always on the lookout for something that has never been done, and that’s something our show designer always says whenever he works with anyone else. They always say “What’s being done, what is the new thing?” and we always ask “What has never been done?” What do you think when you look back to those very early primitive shows as compared to these days? Bono: I think we have very similar instincts, our thing was coming out of Punk, we weren’t a Punk band but we came out of that scene that was punk rock. We went to see the Clash when we were sixteen and seventeen years old. We believed that we could be a garage band from garage land. We sort of stepped out of the audience onto the stage if you like. We were very determined because of the punk ethos that we would not separate ourselves from our audience and so we tried to keep that distance from ourselves and the audience a short one. It is not about the size of the venue. You can go see a band in a club and be right next to the singer, but he is a million miles from you in his head. In terms of attitude he is removed, too cool or whatever it is. So we have always tried to break down the distance, whether that was me stage diving in those early gigs, whether it was going into the crowd, then with video , now with 360. We are always trying to break that, I think they call that the fourth wall. This interview was originally broadcasted live on 10th August, 2009: 96.3 Radio Aire secured exclusive live broadcast rights to one of 2009’s biggest music events: U2’s 360° Tour For the complete interview please visit www.city-dweller.co.uk

Half-term Break! With the kids back to school it might seem too early to think of the October halfterm break however there are some great family theatre deals around. From just £429.00 a family of 4 can spend two nights in a 3* central hotel near Oxford Street with tickets to see the long standing West End family favourite - the Lion King. Other half-term deals include a week in Menorca to the Son Parc Apartments on Son Saura beach from £1236.00 for a family of four departing Manchester on 23 October. Or a week’s all inclusive at Coconut Bay in St Lucia departing Gatwick on 25 October from £3329.00; all prices are based on two adults and two children under 12. It’s been quite pricey getting to the capital by train of late, a good way to make a saving if you’re staying overnight in a hotel is to buy a rail inclusive package, there’s always availability of tickets priced at £35.00 return in standard class or £79.00 in first class from Leeds. The hilarious Peter McIntyre is on at the O2 on Tue 29 Sep and a night at the Ramada Docklands including breakfast is £129.00 per person including tickets for the show. For something rather special the Royal Ballet are performing Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House in October, November and January. A ticket to the performance and a night’s stay at the President hotel in nearby Russell Square is just £74.50 per person including breakfast. Another great value deal for a couple of days Christmas shopping in London to the 4* Corus Hotel at Hyde Park from just £113.50 per person including two nights bed and breakfast and return rail from Leeds or York. This is valid for selected dates right through until the end of April. Or if you like your train journey to have a little more style how about a Festive Break on the Orient-Express? Two nights at the Best Western Queen Hotel in Chester including a five-course champagne lunch on the Northern Belle is £265.00 per person on 20 Dec. Or if you just like the sound of a fabulous day out there’s a departure from Leeds, Harrogate and York on 1 Dec for £195.00 per person. Following the demise of the free cheese sandwich on flights of less than 2 ½ hours, British Airways will begin charging for the second checked bag on transatlantic services from 7th October. Despite the cost-cutting the free gin and tonics will remain though, “there’d be a riot of we took those away”, said a spokesman. Good news too for Leeds’ St Kitts & Nevis ex-pat community, BA is increasing their flights to St Kitts to two a week from next March. Flights will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays with fares currently from £584.00, there’ll be special offers from time to time, contact me if you’d like to be notified when any are released. LOST & FOUND Social enterprise and the world of fashion retail have come together with a new project to introduce a quality used clothing boutique to the city centre. Fashion fans and bargain hunters will receive a boost when the St. Johns Centre and local Community Interest Company, CREATE, open a stylish new shop on 1st October. ‘FOUND by CREATE’ will offer Leedsshopper’s top quality donated clothing from the high street, designer labels and one-off vintage pieces. As well as being able to find a bargain, local companies and shoppers are being encouraged to lend their support to the enterprise by holding or coming along to a special ‘D Day’ event in September – ‘Donate Don’t Dump’ Day! The shop will also feature a dress agency service so designer addicts can sell their sought after items with 50% of the money raised supporting CREATE. ‘D Days’ are being held throughout September with a number of high profile corporate partners including Eversheds, Addleshaw Goddards and Royal Bank of Scotland, already on board. The events are also open to members of the public and shoppers can donate unwanted or unworn quality clothes or accessories by going along to a corporate ‘D Day’ or to the St John’s Centre Management Suite.

The store’s ethos is ‘Buy Sell Donate’ and shoppers are welcome to bring in items that are in a ‘good as new’ condition which will be appealing to buyers. More desirable designer items can be sold via the dress agency service which gives shoppers the chance to reinvest their earnings in some new season fashion whilst supporting the community. Launching on October 1st with an exclusive opening by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, FOUND will then hold a programme of exciting activities to support the Leeds Loves Shopping event from 15 – 25 October.

City Dweller REAL REVIEW

This month City Dweller returns with another fantstic installment of ‘The Real Review!’ Each month Real Radio’s Dixie will be here to provide you, the reader, an insight into what’s HOT and what’s NOT in the CD charts!

PALOMA FAITH DO YOU WANT THE TRUTH OR SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL 1 Two singles down the road and ex-magician’s assistant Paloma Faith is a very serious contender in an overcrowded female artist market. Think Duffy meets Amy Winehouse – hey, who doesn’t sound like Amy today? - add a bit of Alesha Dixon and Adele and you’ll get the picture. It’s a pretty joyous melodic little journey really and there’s little here that’ll make anyone ask for their money back. The first single ‘Stone Cold Sober’ opens the album and works really well. It’s a good pop tune but a little away from where the rest of the album lives musically. ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ slips into the retro feel and ‘Broken Doll’ is a lovely tune which slips further back into nostalgia rather than retro. As Duffy is Dusty Springfield, Paloma sounds and awful lot like Doris Day in places. The title track’s a hit in waiting; I like it a lot. Paloma’s voice feel’s natural and not affected by the influences previously mentioned and on the strength of this those attention seeking mimics are really not required. She’s got an excellent voice and the song builds perfectly, it’s a well produced and constructed ballad. ‘Upside Down’ cashes in on the ‘Christina Aguilera Candyman Alesha Dixon The Boy Does Nothing’ sound. It’s great fun and will no doubt have a vivacious, sexy video to accompany it on its journey to the top of the charts. ‘Romance is Dead’ sees a return to the affected voices – I use the plural as she goes from Adele to Amy to Paloma with unnerving ease – while the excellent new single, ‘New York,’ is followed by the soulful ‘Stargazer.’ ‘My Legs Are Weak’ is bursting with choral glories and souring string which just leaves ‘Play On’ to close the show. I truly believe if Paloma Faith had kept her identity to the fore and not sought to jump in on the popularised vocal band wagon’s this could have been a really credible debut album. As it is, she will have to be content with people seeing through that and discovering that the truth actually can be something beautiful.

VARIOUS ARTISTS SUMMER HOLIDAYS

DAVID BOWIE VH1: STORYTELLERS

2

3

Bowie is the man and with a glittering career packed full of highs and lows (and then-some, in the lows department.) So, here we are in 1999 and The Thin White Duke entered The Manhattan Centre in New York, to record this, an intimate evening of music and chat for VH1. In this double CD release we have the soundtrack on one and the DVD on the other. On the soundtrack disc Bowie is, musically faultless.

Ah, summer… remember that? Well if we can’t have the real thing we can live it through music and this lovely compilation hit’s all the right buttons. Cliff Richard And The Shadows - Summer Holiday, Neil Sedaka - Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Elvis Presley - Devil In Disguise, Andy Williams - Can’t Get Used To Losing You, Perry Como - Magic Moments, Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues the list goes on-and-on. 40 faultless tracks from the 50’s and early 60’s which keeps the heat on all the way through. Summer Holiday is a breath of fresh air for those who remember the songs but a great music history lesson for my younger readers. It’s a must for everyone.

But, I’m only disappointed in his storytelling, the music is perfect. ‘China Girl’ is given a bluesy intro and ‘Thursday’s Child’ from the Hours album is delivered impeccably

Possibly one of the best album titles ever and musically not bad, either. Ian Hunter was the big haired sunglass wearing front man for Mott The Hoople. Following the implosion of Mott, Ian continued, and continues to this day, his musical career with some brilliant solo albums though saying ‘solo’ might be a bit rich as the late great Mick Ronson was an integral part of Ian’s career. He played and produced on this and many of his later albums.

So, contrary to popular belief, there is such thing as a free lunch! Chris Martin and the boys are giving this live collection as a free, yes free, download, from www.coldplay.com by way of a thank you to their fans. This is an incredibly generous gift, as if they put this out on general release; it would without a doubt be a huge chart topper. Nine perfectly recorded tracks which include songs from the cracking album, ‘Viva la Vida (or Death and All His Friends).

THE NEXT BIG THING... About Bio-Signature Bio-signature is a modern concept, which up to this point has only been employed by elite athletes under the tutelage of world renowned Exercise Scientist Charles Poliquin. Now the programme has been adapted for the general public with exceptional levels of success. The Bio Signature has major advantages over other generalised diets due to its tailored nature to each individual’s requirements. The Bio-Signature utilises measurements from 12 key areas on the body to build up a detailed hormonal profile on the individual. This allows the Bio-Signature practitioner to design the most effective programme possible. Through this highly individualistic method, drastic and sustainable reductions in fat levels are achievable in a short period of time.

About Mathew Ex professional Rugby player and qualified personal trainer Mathew Cockroft had trained intensely for nearly a decade and maintained what he thought to be an exceptionally healthy and low fat diet. He presumed he had reached his full potential with regards to health, fitness and body fat percentage. Then he discovered the Bio-signature programme, within two weeks he felt healthier, happier and had dropped 6% body fat. This opened Mathew’s eyes to a whole new world of possibilities for himself and his clients.

Due to the tiny number of qualified practitioners of the Biosignature in the UK, Mathew felt compelled to make this programme available to a wider audience. Initially he was only able to provide his personal clients with the full 12-week programme and they gave the system excellent reviews.

Testimonials “I never thought I could lose body fat so quickly. After trying numerous diets with no success. Bio-Signature was the answer.” Sarah Bouskill, P.E. Teacher “I used to train at least 5 times a week and believed I just was not a lean person, Bio-Signature transformed my body shape in just 3 weeks and I have now successfully kept that body shape for 3 months.” Iain Highfield, Medical sales representative “I had huge losses in all the areas I wanted. My friends could not believe it.” Blaize Ellis-Duffy, Sales Assistant Mathew has also formed a partnership with a local farm shop, which will be providing clients with seasonal, organic and healthy foods; not only to his existing Bio Signature clients, but to anyone else interested in leading a healthy lifestyle.

Expert Opinions “BioSignature offers a rapid assessment tool of one’s hormonal health to individualize and monitor the patient’s protocols to achieve optimal metabolic health. It combines the best of Ayurvedic, Chinese and Western medical systems.” Dr. Abbas Qutab, M.D.

CITY DWELLER’S MARK HUGHES - CELEBRITY HEALTH & FITNESS COACH

THE FASTEST WAY TO GET INTO SHAPE GUARANTEED! An important, but often over looked aspect of health is Rest & Recovery (R & R). Most people have heard that you should have around 8 hours sleep per night but do any of us know why? According to the American Sleep Association, most of us need around 7-8 hours sleep per night. I find that people who are doing a lot of exercise generally need 8-9 hours sleep for optimal recovery. Studies suggest that sleep deprivation affects the immune system and physical performance in detrimental ways. Not great when you are doing lots of exercise. Intense exercise is very stressful to the body and can also lower the immune system. If you are training hard it is especially important to get the correct amount of sleep or else you will be leaving yourself open to colds and the flu. Deep sleep coincides with the release of growth hormone in the body. Many of the body’s cells also show increased production and reduced breakdown of proteins during deep sleep which from an exercise point of view means more muscle growth and faster recovery. People trying to lose weight will be interested in growth hormone because the hormone also encourages fat loss. When you are sleep deprived your body releases stress hormones which encourages your cells to store fat! So whatever your goals, adequate sleep is very important! Regarding recovery, I am often asked how much exercise is too much and how long should you rest between exercise days? The general consensus is to leave 48 hours rest when training specific muscle groups. For example, if you train your upper body with weights on Monday, leave it to the same time on Wednesday to train upper body again but you could train the lower body on Tuesday because those muscles have not yet been worked. 48 hours allows for muscles to refuel, repair and build.

For cardiovascular exercise, low intensity exercise (walking, light jogging etc) can be performed pretty much everyday without the need for a complete rest. Medium intensity work like cycling or running can be performed 5-6 days a week but intense exercise like sprints or squash should be limited to around 3 days a week to ensure adequate recovery. The bottom line is to listen to your body, if you feel like you need a rest have one but again don’t use recovery as an excuse when you know you are just being lazy! THREADS AND INK‌ THE WORLD THROUGH MY EYES. The edgy and vibrant city of London has been my home for the last three years. All over London the streets are inspirational and Goldsmiths College, the university I have graduated from, is no exception. It’s rawness and energy has made me a creative bubble all of my own! Using the interplay of textiles, needlework, paper and print I hope to leave a beautiful stamp on the competitive art scene. Considering textiles as a feminine practice, which once echoed the early needs and desires of women, my illustrations take on a contemporary approach. Coming from an Indian background I had an early introduction to luxurious and rich fabrics. My interest in textiles relates directly to the inuence of my Grandmother. From a very young age I used to sit with her and simply thread pieces of fabric together. This introduction of textiles has always contributed to my illustrations and become a substantial inuence. As well as having a love for super ankle breaking heels and all things beautiful, I love the variation of fabrics, ink and textures that embody a strong sense of my personal identity. My textile illustrations engage all aspects of touch and sight, creating deeper levels of meaning. I hope that my illustrations communicate my passion, creativity and the attempt to create originality in design application. I am currently living in Leeds and the ever-growing city is giving me inspiration on many levels. If you would like more information please contact: Sandeep Jandu Sjandu88@googlemail.com

LEEDS UNITED MANAGER SIMON GRAYSON HAILED HIS RECORD-BREAKING PLAYERS AFTER A TERRIFIC START TO THE NEW SEASON.

The 2-0 win against Stockport County at the start of September saw the class of 2009 etch their name into the Leeds United history books. The 2-0 success was United’s 14th straight league win home soil - bettering the 13 set by Don Revie’s side in 1969 - and it was the eighth straight victory to the start the season in all competitions, bettering the seven straight wins at the start of the 1973 season. “The players can be proud of themselves,” he said. “To break the records they have is terrific, and they deserve full credit for what they have done. There’s been some great players and managers at this club and to put their names in the record books is something they should all be very proud of. This club is steeped in history and tradition and they have created a record which we hope we expand upon. “In terms of our season, we haven’t achieved anything and no one here thinks we have, but to win eight straight games to start the season - six of them in the league - and to win 14 on the bounce at home in the league is a fantastic achievement for everyone concerned.” First half goals from Mike Grella, his first for the club, and Lubo Michalik with his first in over two years, proved enough to see off a spirited Stockport side in front of almost 23,000 at Elland Road. “I wouldn’t say it was a great performance, but it was a victory and that’s what counts,” said the manager. “Sometimes you don’t play as well as you can, but you have to win games, and that’s what we did. “We were comfortable enough without really imposing ourselves, but it was another win. You have to give Stockport credit and our players have had a heavy schedule, but we’ve set high standards and we know we can do better.”
