GettinG to Grips with hair-raisinG problems a woman’s hair may be her crowning glory, but when things start to go wrong, it can affect more than the way she looks.

Iain Sallis, the only hospital-based trichologist in the country, says that “many doctors underestimate the affect the loss of a woman’s hair can have on her self-esteem, these people are desperate for a ‘cure’ and there are a lot of myths about hair loss and ways to prevent it. People spend a lot of money on shampoos and other treatments which simply don’t work”.

Trichology is the study of disorders of the hair and scalp which includes such problems as, diffuse hair loss (general thinning of the hair), psoriasis and alopecia to name but a few, “There are a lack of specialists in this field, doctors do not have the time to spend with patients on such matters as hair loss and then they may not have the expertise to diagnose the cause of the problem, people with these disorders are usually left out on their own”.

As women grow older they can still follow fashion trends and show off their bodies to their best advantage, look at Michelle Pfeiffer, Goldie Hawn or Meryl Streep. Clinging to youth is not a good look unless a woman is genetically gifted. Learning how to show some skin in a stylish, more elegant way helps to minimize any mutton-dressedas-lamb moments. When a woman waves goodbye to her 40s, the question is how low or high should she go, and how much skin should be on show?

One fail-safe rule of fashion is not to reveal too much flesh. Stylish yet still sexy, showing some shoulder is a way to keep on trend.

Asymmetric dresses have ruled the runways for four seasons now and 2010 is no exception. Whether aged 50 or 70, any woman can look elegant in a stylish one-shouldered dress, particularly one with draping.

(A well-fitting strapless bra and a more demure hemline is essential though!) A woman can avoid looking like she’s trying too hard to be young by making sure her figure appears in proportion. When wearing an outfit with a revealing neckline, it’s advisable to balance out the rest of the body’s silhouette - do this by covering up on the bottom-half with a longer hemline or vice-versa, with a shorter hemline make sure your top-half is not too revealing.

When it comes to hemlines remember, skirts or dresses which finish half way down the calf can be unflattering and ageing, as the hemline finishes at the fattest part of the lower leg.

If there is one part of the body that a woman can draw attention to with confidence, it’s her “décolletage”. Go for elegant necklines which show off some cleavage, such as a scoop or square neckline ... bigger busts should go for a v-neck to avoid the ‘uniboob’ look. For women who don’t feel comfortable revealing their cleavage, try a draped lowback as an alternative.

And finally ... when it comes to bingo wings ... cover them up!

Three-quarter length sleeves cover a multitude of sins and make arms look slimmer, or sleeves in sheer fabrics like chiffon will give the effect of baring flesh without being unsightly.

So with this in mind, enjoy any family weddings this summer, without the fear of looking back at the photographs in discomfort ... they will be passed down through generations!

BBC Children in Need is delighted to announce that £591,081 worth of grants have been awarded to projects in Yorkshire and The Humber which will help make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people in the area.

This allocation of grants is the first of four grant rounds for 2010, which are possible thanks to the amazing 2009 appeal total of over £20.3 million – which is still rising as fundraisers across the country continue to raise money on behalf of the Bear!

Since November, BBC Children in Need has received thousands of applications for funding, which have been rigorously assessed and considered by eight committees who pass on their recommendations to the Trustees of the charity.

Each project that receives a grant from BBC Children in Need works with children and young people who may be affected by abuse, homelessness, neglect, poverty, or those who have disabilities, psychological disorders or who have encountered or are encountering serious illnesses.

All of the grants are targeted to areas across the UK where they will make a real difference to the lives of children and young people; they are allocated geographically to ensure that all corners of the UK receive a share of the money raised by the Great British public.

The average amount awarded to a project this grant round is £37,362 with grants ranging in size from £500 to the largest single grant of £379,850. BBC Children in Need’s experience shows that significant and valuable work can be achieved with a small grant (£10,000 or less per year for a maximum of three years) and that these are amongst the most imaginative and meaningful grants it makes.

Projects inYorkshire andThe Humber include Down Syndrome Support Group in Bradford who received a grant of £7,200 to provide speech and language therapy sessions for children and young people with Down’s syndrome living in Bradford.

SPIDER-Y Ltd were awarded £14,200 towards the costs of a wheelchair basketball club for disabled young people living in Leeds.

St Gemma’s Hospice were awarded £134,829 to provide bereavement support for children whose parent/ carer is receiving end of life care at St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds.

GORILLAZ PLASTIC BEACH

1 Plastic Beach is the much anticipated new album from the anime characters 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs that call themselves Gorillaz, but in human form they are best known as Damon Albarn from Blur and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the Tank Girl comic books.

As the world’s biggest animated band, if not the only … (did The Archies officially break up?), Gorillaz formed in 1998 and after only two albums have notched up sales of over 12 million! It’s been five years since the release of Demon Days which spawned three top ten singles including the brilliant ‘Feel Good Inc’ and now, according to their press release, the alter egos of the band have taken up residence and are recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity.

This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet. That might go some way to explaining why this does feel a little out of touch in places and not so different from what went before.

Laying the foundations for the album is the single ‘Stylo,’ featuring Mos Def and the immaculate soul legend, Bobby Womack. It’s a pretty good example of what to expect with its hypnotic rhythm, clean clear looping lead line and 2D’s lazy rap. The album is crammed with special guests from Snoop Dogg to Gruff Rhys and Mick Jones, all the way through to The National Orchestra For Arabic Music and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

Plastic Beach is best listened to as a whole, as tracks like ‘Superfast Jellyfish’ might not travel so well alone, while ‘Glitter Freeze’ is too structurally reminiscent of Muses ‘Uprising’ without the ability of repeated listening. ‘Some Kind Of Nature’ is a nice little ditty featuring Lou Reed and 2D’s very distinctive vocal delivery. You could hear Blur doing this as it feels very ‘Beetlebum’.

I’m guessing there will be a couple of big hits coming through from the album but they may come in the form of remixes as, overall, Gorillaz have delivered an album that may be as novel as it is sometimes self-indulgent and hard work in places.

ALPHABEAT THE BEAT IS…

Ellie is the winner of the 2010 Brits Critics Choice Award and #1 on BBC Sound of 2010 list, so the album has a lot to live up. She’s a 22 year old singer/songwriter from Hertfordshire whose appearance on Later with Jools Holland late last year, thrust her into the spotlight. She has a unique blend of folk influences coupled with ‘electronica’ and the buzz on the social networking sites has been bubbling for a while.

‘Lights’ features 10 tracks, including the singles ‘Under The Sheets’ and ‘Starry Eyed’, and her chief producer and sometimes co-writer Fin Dow-Smith, recorded most of the album in his bedroom in Bromley.

This is prevalent through its foundation of drum machines, lush synth keyboards, samples, and vocal manipulation Ellie’s songs are anchored around big tunes with some charming melodies weaved into exhilarating choruses, ‘The Writer’ is a great example of that while ‘Every Time You Go’ if full of quirky sounds with strong lyrics and is crying out for a dance remix. Stand out for me is ‘Wish I Had Stayed’ which bounds along to an infectious chorus.

Listening to ‘Lights,’ it comes as no surprise that Ellie has written two songs for X-Factor’s Diana Vickers’ upcoming debut album and that says a lot about Ellie and her sound. She’s a dancier, more polished and more refined sounding Vickers.

She has mastered the vocal inflection accents which helped Diana through the early stages of X-Factor and I like the album, there are some good tunes here. But, and it’s a big but, is she any better or different enough from other artists like Paloma Faith, Adelle, Lenka, Katy Perry in the over-shopped market she’s thrust into? Only time will tell.

4 Alphabeat say they are special because they’re Danish and there’s quite a few of them, six in fact. ‘The Beat Is…’, has its eyes dead set on the horizon ahead and is full of great songs built on properly affecting retro-pop styles. You will no doubt have heard the instantly catchy, radio friendly, funk-pop of first single ‘The Spell’, but there’s the slippery filter-house of ‘DJ’, the piano-riff-meets-speaker-rattling bass line of the single, ‘Hole In My Heart’ and the R’n’B touched, downtempo reach of ‘Q&A’. You might go for ‘Chess’ with its fantastically pointed opening line, “Baby let’s quit playing chess, you’ve been to my address…” and pitch-bend vocal samples rarely heard since 1989. Right near the end of the record is the epic, euphoric bliss of ‘The Right Thing’ where a Black Box style big piano screamer tumbles down a huge great chasm of a breakdown. No need for a remix – everything you’ll ever need is right here.

The band is the main support act on Lady GaGa’s Monster Ball tour; she picked them as one of her favourite new acts for no other reason than she likes them. And we do too. Good, infectious Europop.

OCEAN COLOUR SCENE SATURDAY

5 THE FEATURES SOME KIND OF SALVATION 3 The press release opens with the irresistible line: “Kings Of Leon will proudly release ‘Some Kind Of Salvation’, the new album by Tennessee brethren, The Features”. Okay, as a fan, that got my attention and the release is laced with quotes from the KOL who have thrown their full weight behind the band and on listening to this, they are not taking much of a gamble.

‘Some Kind Of Salvation’ weaves a sound that can be described as a bulging mix of scrappy white-boy soul. Their influences run the gamut of popular music over the last 50 years, whereas some bands arrange certain songs to sound like this-or-thatera, The Features just let the musical pieces they’ve picked up through the years fall back into place, giving them an identity all their own.

The Kings of Leon influence is rife across the album embracing that empty home grown feel KOL captured on their early albums, while retaining an individual sound. ‘Whatever Gets You By’ is an attention grabbing opener through its quirky empty rhythm, which rips seamlessly into the horn led ‘Drawing Board’. The album motors on with some excellent tunes which could easily cross into mainstream. This is a really good album and these bunch of good ‘ol boys are destined for greatness, mark my words.

Birmingham’s Ocean Colour Scene, who will be celebrating their 21st anniversary this year, have clocked up an impressive 11 Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums during their illustrious career. Saturday is their ninth studio album, and from the opening bars of psych-folk opener ‘100 Floors Of Perception’ to epic climax ‘Rockfield,’ it’s a reminder than when it comes to delivering classic rock hooks there are fewer bands better. Denim-driven boogie ‘Old Pair Of Jeans’ will delight those hankering for the full-tilt mod-pop, while stand out ‘Harry Kidnap’ is written in tribute to Paul Weller’s late father, John. The single, ‘Magic Carpet Days’, meanwhile is a reminder that their belief in the Mod aesthetic of self-improvement remains as strong as ever.

Ocean Colour Scene have always been a formidable force and ‘Saturday’ underpins that. Well worth grabbing a copy.

a PassioNaTe WomaN - (rollem Productions) is a feature-length adaptation of Kay mellor’s stage play of the same name for the BBC and High Point films. starring Billie Piper, filming took place in leeds throughout the autumn of 2009. screen yorkshire invested in the film through its Production fund.

Kay mellor’s play a PassioNaTe WomaN has achieved significant success on the international touring circuit since it began life at the West yorkshire Playhouse in 1992. rollem Productions has brought it home to the region, where they have been shooting a feature film adaptation for screen yorkshire and High Point films alongside a 2x90’ version for the BBC throughout autumn 2009. a PassioNaTe WomaN, starring Billie Piper, sue Johnston, alun armstrong and frances Barber, tells the story of a young wife and mother, played by Piper, who falls in love with her Polish neighbour in 1950s Britain only for her affair to implode 30 years later on her son’s wedding day.

Leah & Paul meeting the fabulous Kay Mellor Intro: Paul: Thanks for writing about Leeds at City Dweller - we love Leeds and its people so this is a great privilege for us to meet you and cover the premiere of APW. Kay: No need to thank me - I love Leeds and I am proud of my roots .I always try to ensure my plays are written with Leeds in mind and am sincerely pleased that the Leeds economy has benefited from my productions. I have had offers from all over the world but where I can, I want to keep the productions in Leeds.

My mother was the inspiration for APW! She was working class and very down to earth. She had no money and didn’t have the time to be spending on her appearance - she wasn’t glamorous A Passionate Women’s story is my mother’s own very personal story with a little imagination. It started as a screen play at West Yorkshire Playhouse then went to the West End and is now a BBC Drama. I have found working on this production very hard work and tiring and in all weathers.

I know every single frame and I am so happy with the end result.

At the casting sessions we had the cream of the crop.

The Casting of Billie Piper was not originally the first person in mind to play my mother. I bumped into her in a corridor just before the casting session and she was very nervous and shaking from head to toe and she told me I want this part so much. As soon as I heard Billie read the lines we knew she was perfect for the part of my young mother.Billie embodies my younger mother’s part .Billie was worried about perfecting her Leeds accent but she got it spot on .She loved Leeds for especially the shopping and restaurants. Zane as a handsome and relatively unknown actor was the perfect selection to play her lover. Sue Johnson is incredible as my older mother.

I do put humour into my writing. There is humour in all walks of life. Humour is part of life it is a tool for drama.

If you are a good story teller you can seek out humour in life and incorporate it through your writing.

I recently received an OBE from Prince Charles. I am not sure who nominated me. It was a wonderful experience and he was familiar with my work.

My advice to anyone who has ever thought about writing is to just do it. Go for it. Get writing, get feedback and get friends to read what you have written.

Many of us enjoy some sort of physical activity (no giggles at the back!), whether its sports, martial arts, dancing, running, cycling, yoga, skiing or gym work the list is exhaustive. If you enjoy dancing then make it a weekly activity and go with friends who also enjoy dancing. If you’ve always fancied giving boxing a go then join a club and start boxing. You won’t get bored if it’s something you enjoy! Think outside of the box and find your preferred exercises.

2. challenGe yourselF!

Set targets and goals! This is truly the way to succeed in life let alone fitness. If you’re main goal is to run a 10K event then breakdown each training session in to goals. 1 goal might be to train 3 x a week. Really challenge yourself to do that. The next goal could be to run 1K under a certain time. Change the targets to suit your goals and chosen activity. Continually setting yourself challenges keeps you interested and motivated to succeed.

6. Get some new workout music!

Yes it actually works! Getting some new workout music for your iPod or MP3 really changes your mood when training. It can keep you interested. Getting the new Ibiza Annual and ONLY listening to it when you’re exercising will make you look forward to your sessions and give your workouts a new lease of life!

7. Get some new workout clothes and equipment!

I’ve recently started training with resistance bands and they are a great workout! If you’re getting bored why not try getting a new piece of fitness equipment and giving that a go?

If you always use the treadmill then why not give the rowing machine a go or resistance training?

try a new class at the Gym!

Recruit a friend to start exercising with you. This means that you can catch up with your friend and still exercise. Just make sure they are well motivated and that you actually enjoy their company!

There are so many classes at the gym nowadays there is something for everyone.

Personally I recommend the ‘spin’ classes and Yoga to everyone and the body pump is great for women. Pretty much every class has its benefits and is enjoyable so try something new!

Get a buddy.

Make exercise a fun social event by joining a team or club. You will meet new people, make new friends and push each other to achieve your goals. Find a sport or physical hobby you enjoy and find a club. Why not join with your training buddy?

5. chanGe your exercise/traininG every 4 weeks.

I find that after 4 weeks of following a program I get bored. To combat this I completely change my program every 4 weeks. That way I never get bored! You can do this with physical hobbies and by swapping your training partner too. Why not try badminton for 4 weeks, and then give squash a go for 4 weeks, then tennis and then something completely different like swimming! It’s impossible to get bored!

You can overdo exercise and when you do your body reacts by making you not ‘feel’ like training. Schedule a low volume week every 4 weeks where you do little exercise but you do plenty of relaxing things like going to the cinema, long walks, yoga, hot relaxing baths and early nights. After 1 week of R & R you should be recovered and ready to hit exercise hard the following week.

Ask an Australian what their contributions as a nation have been to the rest of the world and chances are they will reel off a hefty list on which I am sure will be the words: cricket, the great outback, pintsized pop princess Kylie, recently her more sultry sibling Danni, boomerangs, beer, their ‘throwing-another-shrimp-on-the-barbeque’ laidback nature, and most definitely their wines.

What all these things have in common is that all have come into our lives in explosive ways and every time they momentarily disappear, they just keep returning with more gusto than before. Love them or loathe them, they just have to be in our lives, much like the long running cheesy Aussie soaps. My favourite was not the sunshine filled daytime viewing but the slightly grimmer Prisoner Cell Block H, but luckily this insane addiction to grey painted cardboard sets and high drama in the laundry room was finally to give its last flower on air. Anyway, not to get too upset about that as it is in the past, let us get out into the fresh air, if we should be so lucky, and smell the future in the spring.

I know most people do not have the gift of clairvoyance, and whilst I do not profess to owning it either, I can be sure that in the months that lie ahead, I shall be doing my bit to thank Australia for all they have given us by consuming some of their vast wine lake. Q - Dear Dr Jones - Do you have any advice on excessive snoring?

My partner is aged 45 and in reasonable health. However I have to sleep in a separate bed on work nights due to this problem.

Yours hopefully A - Snoring is caused by turbulence inside the airway during breathing in. This can occur anywhere from the nose right down to the vocal cords.

The main problem appears to be reduced muscle tone during sleep but this can have many causes. These include being overweight, alcohol, smoking, sleeping position, allergies and nasal congestion. Many products are available including nasal sprays and strips, mandibular advancement devices (these push the jaw forward to help airflow) and mouth guards along with various machines if the cause is thought to be sleep apnoea. *Sleep Apnoea service is available at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital

Q - Could you clear something up for me please. The five a day

A - I agree Lynn this can be confusing and it does depend on the type of fruit or veg. Things such as general health, weight loss or gain, bowel and urine function along with periods would need to be looked into. Medication may also be a factor.

Perhaps you can think about these and if anything has changed over this time.

I’ve had enough of this cold weather. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to switch off my heating and put my hot water bottle away. All the extra money I’ve had to spend on heating my house has left me strapped for cash with little left for frivolities. I’m currently dreaming of drinking ice cold beers in the glorious sunshine and of hanging out at music festivals.

It’s official. I am a ‘superfan’ albeit an overnight ‘superfan’ but still ... not of cars, Cheryl ‘Tweedy’ (although I am sending her a mental high five!) or Dancing on Ice but of the man or epicentre that is David Lloyd!

I wholly admit I was intimidated by the beast, its vastness and lycra-cladded demographic of which I presumed to be yummy mummys who lunch and do the occasional pilates class or buns of steel gym bunnies. I am neither but am now a fully fledged member and feel quite at home already!

Ironically my first exceeded expectation was ... the food menu! Not the fantastic facilities; indoor and outdoor pool, tennis, squash, badminton courts, studios, etc. nope. My attention was in the grub and by ‘eck it was impressive - healthy options which I guess is to be expected, but is something that does frustrate me about other gyms who have Mars bars for 50p on the counter when you walk in?!

My favourite though has to be the free offer of sunflower seed sprinkles on salads, porridge, etc. (I do like my freebies!). So, on a mission to increase my lung capacity and decrease my bum capacity for a summer of St Tropez hen holidaying I take a deep breath and head to the ... changing room! I am at the mercy of David Lloyd to get me fit and over the next couple of months I’m sure you will hear some embarrassing and insightful anecdotes from my time in the gym, in the classes and on the tennis courts!

They’re currently offering a full membership for £115 per month for a three month membership which is perfect if you just want to do a bikini blitz.

It does sound(and is), a lot of money but I feel that it can be justified by thinking: “If someone said if I can make you lose half a stone, tighten up, get fit and healthy, look radiant, have more energy and feel even more brilliant that you already do on a daily basis - how much would you pay?” I’d definitely pay £345 - it’s priceless. So the Mastercard came out!

We recently went to Airkix in Manchester to go skydiving ... indoors! It was just brilliant, hilarious to watch my 60 year old parents get instant facelifts and get thrown around by 100 mph winds but it’s incredibly liberating flying around. I would highly recommend it for a Sunday out and they allow kids from aged four to go - make it a family affair.

I’m reading ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert at the moment which was recommended to me whilst I was modelling wedding dresses one day, it’s sold over six million copies and I now know why. It’s a woman’s search for everything and is very relatable, insightful and thought provoking with laugh out loud humour. The film about it is being made at the moment with Julia Roberts paying the lead, so I’d recommend reading the book before you see the film, I always think it’s better that way round.

I’ve been crazy busy this month with modelling AND of course Ology Kids Casting, I’ve done my best to make all sorts look good; lots of sofas, shopping centres, cars, oh, and paintbrushes! The mother hen that I am to all my kids on the agency books have once again made me very proud, they’ve had jobs with Cbeebies, Disney, Waterloo Road, Sainsburys and more in the last couple of weeks!

If Beckham ends up missing out on this years World Cup, Fabio Capello must decide on what player can live up to Beckhams free kick and crossing skills.

With choices such as Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Ashley Young all blessed with pace, or Stewart Downing, Joe Cole and James Milner who posses more skill and experience Capello has many options available to him.

With the options above for the right midfield position the England manager should have more than enough technical and physical potential to outfox the Worlds finest teams.

Options such as Walcott and Young are great to have when getting past the defence is key, however where they are blessed with pace, their skill and ability to cross the ball does not come into contention with the likes of other options such as Downing and Cole. The likes of Milner and Wright-Phillips both have pace and offer a skillful and tricky encounter when the need for winning the ball in midfield is necessary.

Capello must also look at fitness as keeping an unchanged team will be key, and with Cole and Walcott prone to injury are they going to be able to play most of the tournament?

There is no obvious choice for Capello to make but Englands chances are certainly still as strong as ever.

City Homes ‘City Living in Leeds is not, as the national, media would have had us believe, a failed market place. Since the Sunday Times claimed some years ago that ‘up to 70% of all apartments in Leeds City Centre are sitting empty’, the bandwagon has rolled on an on, further fuelled in the last two years by the impact of the national downturn in the housing market.

Spurred on at the end of 2009 by a frustrated desire to finally set the record straight, Morgans got together with Knight Frank, King Sturge, Savills, Allsop and Rachael Unsworth of Leeds University, to take a detailed look at city living in Leeds today and into the future.

The study- entitled ‘City Living - beyond the boom’ - is an honest and grown up attempt to put recent activity into context, to try and establish today’s occupancy levels and to analyse in detail the likely future supply of city centre apartments.

Over the next few issues of City Dweller, I will be highlighting some of the key findings of the report which we hope will become an important source of evidence for the wide variety of individuals and agencies who are engaged in the market. ·-

Looking to the Future in the property market recessions come and go certainly in regard to property markets. the last major recession did not have the impact that this one has had, nor did it have the longterm financial ramification that this one has had. however, after 25 years as a property Solicitor there is no doubt in my mind that the property market will pick up as confidence grows, and i sense that there is a great deal of demand and that will have to be fulfilled, and therefore long term, property is still a good investment.

Certainly 2009 was another difficult year for those of us in the property market. the year, as often is the case started slowly with the “doom and gloom” of the recession still ringing in most peoples ears and the uncertainty of the market generally, particularly in regard to obtaining any loan. the difficulty in 2008 was where first time buyers could get mortgages sellers still expected to obtain unrealistic prices in the property recession. in 2009 however it seems most agents are able to persuade sellers that their aspirations were too great, and more realistic prices were been offered to the market and therefore there were less down valuations taking place. i think that most people in the property market are looking forward with optimism for 2010 and believe the property market is slowly crawling out of a recession. now that spring is upon us hopefully this will assist in driving the market further forward. property prices certainly seemed to have stabilised and in certain arears prices are actually increasing and this seems to be a national trend. there is no doubt that there is still some way to go but i am hopeful that the banks will be more realistic this year and free up further funds for the eager mortgage market and time will tell. i think now is the time to take that step on to the property market and i have seen people take the leap and as a property Solicitor i can guide you every step of the way.

Violent Crime Down in leeDs City Centre The number of violent crimes in Leeds city centre has fallen by 15 per cent in January and February compared to the same period in 2009.

The number of recorded violent crimes, which includes minor and serious assaults, threatening behaviour and public order offences such as shouting or swearing, has dropped from 266 in January and February 2009 to 226 in the same period of 2010 - which is less than four incidents per day.

Assaults committed in the evening and early hours account for 125 of the 226 incidents recorded, which is a 22% reduction on the 161 recorded during the previous year.

The reduction follows several pro-active operations and initiatives in the city centre involving the City Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) and partners including Safer Leeds, British Transport Police, Taxi Licensing and the Security Industry Authority who monitor door staff at licensed premises.

This includes the use of a Dispersal Order from November 2009 until January 2010, where groups or individuals under the influence of alcohol

could be ordered to leave the city centre for up to 24 hours, static patrols of Neighbourhood Policing Team officers at key locations, and regular alcohol test purchase operations involving special constables in plain clothes and volunteers aged under 18 at licensed premises.

“People coming to Leeds can be assured that our city is becoming safer, and we will continue working hard to keep cutting crime.”

Chief Inspector Vernon Francis is responsible for policing in Leeds city centre.

Chief Inspector Francis said: “We do not have a problem with violent crime in Leeds compared to other major cities, but many people still have concerns about safety when they come here which is why it is a priority for our officers to make sure we put a stop to any potential trouble before it starts.

“The latest figures show that all the work the City NPT and our partners have put in to make the city safer is working, but even then I think these statistics can look misleading.

“More than 200 offences in two months may sound a lot of incidents to some people, but when you consider that nearly 100,000 people come into Leeds city centre on a daily basis, the chance of you becoming a victim of any kind of violent offence is extremely low.

Lion rescue

the romanian Lions arrive at the a pride of lions has been rescued from a run-down zoo in romania where they faced an uncertain future living in inadequate facilities and flown to robin hood airport, doncaster to start a new life at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Believed to be the largest big cat rescue ever, park directors initiated a campaign through the charity Wildlife heritage foundation to raise £150,000 to save the lions in august after learning of their plight at oradea Zoo from the organisation sos Zoo. John minion, animal director, visited the park in July at the invitation of the zoo director dhiana Ghender and was both shocked and moved by the experience and pledged to help the lions. “they are such magnificent animals and despite the heat and the poor facilities, their spirit was still very evident. one lioness even came over to greet us. some of them have health problems that veterinary care, good diet, exercise and appropriate housing will help greatly. there is a wide range of ages from 18 month old cubs to Johnny senior, who is 27 years old – a whole generation of lions. the staff at oradea really love their animals and desperately want the best for them – we really wanted to help them.” the appeal still has £25,000 to raise towards the rescue costs but the park accelerated their plans to bring the lions to the uk on welfare grounds as the animals’ health was deteriorating due to the cold winter conditions in their inadequate housing at oradea. the appeal was also helped by the generous offer of Philip meeson, the owner of friendly low fare airline Jet2.com, to fly them to the uk. there has also been outstanding support from robin hood airport and servis air who are receiving the flight.

on tuesday 9th february, a team of vets and the lions faced a four hour journey by road to experts from Yorkshire Wildlife Park, twycross Budapest airport and left oradea Zoo under a Zoo, shepreth Wild animal Park (all members police escort, complete with blue lights and sirens. of the British and irish association of Zoos and aquariums (BiaZa)) flew out to romania to initiate the rescue. this was a challenging and dangerous operation in difficult conditions, as up to five lions were kept in enclosures as small as 12’ x 15’. the team worked quickly in sub zero temperatures to tranquilise the individual lions and move them into travelling crates. this was an incredibly hard task for the vets to manage with the animals ranging in age from 15 months to 27 years. one of the youngest, simba, walked into his crate without any need for tranquilising. Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s animal director John Minion described the experience:

“ I was heartbroken to see these proud cats in these conditions back in August and from then on we were committed to helping them.

Their condition and health is poor, but their spirit is still unbroken. They have never known anything different than these conditions. Today was a surreal experience for me, the moment had come when they were finally leaving the zoo. Now I will be happy when they are back in Yorkshire. The lions are going to need a lot of veterinary care and rehabilitation before they can fully enjoy the 9 acre reserve that is currently being landscaped for them at Yorkshire Wildlife Park and I am now looking forward to the day that they feel grass underneath their feet for the first time.”

the Wildlife heritage foundation, the charity that is working with the park on the project has received over 12,000 donations so far in cheques, online donations and direct donations totalling over £126,000 – close to the target of £150,000. many donations came from the readers of the news of the World. cheryl Williams, director of Yorkshire Wildlife Park thanked this newspaper and everyone who has made a donation or contacted them. “this has been an amazing response. We are touched by the letters from those that have made donations,

Scouting For Girls Play Live On Emmerdale Set Chart busting trio ‘Scouting For Girls’ played a live acoustic set in Emmerdale’s Woolpack Friday 12th March. The live set was part of 96.3 Radio Aire’s Emmerdale take over week with Friday’s broadcast being live from the woolpack.

Emmerdale take over week was organised by the guys at Emmerdale and 96.3 Radio Aire. A different cast member was interviewed each day on Radio Aire’s JK & Joel @ Breakfast and on Rich Williams Home Run. Scouting For Girls where a great appointment for 96.3 Radio Aire’s listeners as they performed their new track ‘This Ain’t A Love Song’ and one of their well know older hits ‘She’s so lovely’.

Rhinos team up with: RJ Community Choir from Chapeltownv

Leeds Rhinos’ young star Luke Burgess has set a new ‘record’ for his team.

Burgess joined the rest of his Rhinos team mates recently in helping to record their version of the Heather Small hit Proud with the RJ Community Choir. However, Burgess took things one step further than his team mates and actually performed a solo on the single.

Commenting on the experience Burgess said: “It was something really different from what we are used to obviously but it was good to go outside of your comfort zone and try something new. We had a couple of rehearsals and Leroy Johnson, who runs the choir, picked myself and Danny McGuire out to do the solos.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, Danny was not able to hang around to record his solo so it is only me who features on the finished version.”

“The CD is for a great cause, especially as it directly helps families here in Leeds at a very tough time in their lives. I don’t mind a bit of mickey taking if it means we help the Sick Children’s Trust raise the money to reach their appeal target”, added Burgess.

The CD is available now at just £5 from the Rhinos club shop at Headingley Carnegie and the St Johns Centre in Leeds City Centre and all proceeds go to aid The Sick Children’s Trust (SCT)’s Big Move Appeal.

The SCT’s ‘The Big Move’ campaign, aims to raise £1.7 million to move Eckersley House from its current location at St James’ Hospital to the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) in May 2010. To date the SCT has raised over £1 million to fund the move—but still need to raise the crucial £700,000 to open the new house this summer.

Fundraiser for the Big Move Appeal Vicki Smith said: “The Sick Children’s Trust is so grateful for the Rhinos support and we’re hoping to raise about £10,000 from the CD. It’s a great song and a great cause.”

For 16 years Eckersley House has supported the recovery of seriously ill children across Yorkshire by providing high quality accommodation and caring staff for families, just minutes away from the hospital wards.

St James’ Hospital is moving its children’s wards to the LGI to create a paediatric Centre of Excellence. By April 2010 the majority of children’s wards will be moved to the new centre. This development means that Eckersley House will no longer be needed in its present location at St James’ Hospital, but will be in great demand at the LGI. The move of Eckersley House to the LGI will also mean more bedrooms - from 16 to 22 - to help more families in their time of need.

The SCT will be the sole provider of family accommodation at the LGI; so if Eckersley House isn’t moved, every year hundreds of sick children from across Yorkshire would have to undergo prolonged medical treatment without their families being close by.
