Every couple of months the fashion world assess the collections and dissects the trends of the season. Sometimes the hottest trends on the catwalk can be a disaster in real life!

Bars • Restaura n t s • C a s i n o

Here’s a few pointers for Winter to stop you making a fashion Faux pas...

Less is more! The looks you see on the catwalk are not always meant to be thrown on by the average woman and worn to work or the supermarket. Collections that seem outrageous are often meant to be! It’s how the designer gets his point across without room for confusion. When trying out these trends, less is more, fashion crimes are committed when an entire outfit is made of pieces all screaming the same trend. Unless your circle of friends are the young fashion elite, it’s generally best to use the looks on the runway for inspiration, not blatant imitation. Lets face it, who really wants to look like Lady Gaga?

Play it safe... & stylish For example: Rather than wearing an entire ‘80s ensemble (a common trend for winter) and look like you’re going to a bad taste party, mix and match the ‘80s pieces with modern ones. Pair an oversized blazer with modern skinny jeans. Or if the designer’s vision is motorbike chic, rather than covering yourself in black leather and studs, pick up a simple biker jacket and wear it over something a bit softer.

Introducing our great Christmas packages, offering a variety of specially designed private events in our glamorous casino. Catering from 2 people to parties over 500, Alea is the venue to celebrate the festive season on 2009. • PARTY PACKAGES AVAILABLE FROM £45 PER HEAD • GLASS OF FIZZ ON ARRIVAL • LIVE BAND/DJ • TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MENU

With a little creativity and self-restraint, even the most challenging trends can transition from the catwalk into your wardrobe. Keep these tips in mind to avoid a fashion disaster.

Twinkling lights and happy hearts By Kathryn Glass I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus, underneath the mistletoe last night... Baubles and bubbles, tinsel and trees, fairies and festivities, choirs and candles, shopping, shopping and more shopping, have become all part and gift-wrapped parcel of this frenzied time of year but really.. I have to draw a line at having a large-bellied, mince pie loving, white bearded, married man making improper moves on my mother! I can trace the origins of their romance back to the day when he, in dapper mood, laid his fuzzy red coat down for her to step over a slushy puddle one nearly white Christmas, but after 12 days and a partridge in a pear tree, he disappeared off with not even a bell to say where to, leaving her heartbroken and sobbing whilst listening to Wham (although that quite often has the same effect on me for other reasons). Of course I am joking... Albeit a very poor attempt at humour in order to raise my weary spirits, after what can only be the hardest time of the year for any wine merchant. No, I apologise for seeing the glass half full, although when the excesses of the season have taken their toll on our midriffs perhaps this is no bad thing. However, my one tip to keep us all going well into the New Year is to focus on happiness. Let’s think not about expense and expanse, but revel in the moments spent with friends, family and loved ones, with a glass in hand and warm cheer in your hearts.

Wither Hills Pinot Noir, New Zealand £12.99* A moment spent contemplating the opulent red berried fruits that brim seductively onto the palate is a moment to treasure. Tannins so soft, body so smooth, the cherries, raspberries and cranberries that burst onto the taste buds leave us savouring them long after we have set the glass down. Slight earthiness and hints of cedar are integrated finely and perfectly into the balance, like holly is to ivy.

Taylors 10 year old Tawny Port £17.99* If you can smell the chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and soft scents of Christmas pudding wafting in from the kitchen, this is close to the nose on this fortified wine. The palate brings black berries and blackcurrants, with more complex undertones of dried fruits such as raisins and figs, and the balance of sweetness, alcohol and fruits make it the perfect supping accompaniment to any winter occasion. * This is a guide price. Products available from all good wine merchants

The Fig mediterranean Grill Dr Jones is the lead GP at the Nuffield’s City GP service based at the hospital in Leeds. As such he has a healthy interest in what goes on in and around the city. I have been asked to answer questions on topics and issues that are of interest to the people living in Leeds. That means you! Each month I will base the article around correspondence that I receive from you. This can be a specific problem or a general subject matter, whatever you want to know really. I will also try and include some relevant internet links so you can look into the subject further. As we had no set topic for the first month I took a straw poll in the office and top of the list at present is of course ‘Swine Flu’.

In the UK there have been approximately 700,000 possible cases with some 20,000 + confirmed and approximately 240 deaths. The number of new cases though has dropped for the last 2 weeks. The vaccination programme is well under way and 65 million doses have been given worldwide so far. These include those aged between six months and 65 years in the seasonal flu vaccine at-risk groups, all pregnant women and people who live with those whose immune systems are compromised, such as cancer patients or people with HIV/ AIDS. Now also healthy children aged six months to 5 years are to be covered. If you are concerned about the vaccine you can discuss it with your GP or look for advice on the sites below. If you experience any symptoms that may be flu related such o as high temperature around 38 C or above, cough, sore throat, runny nose, loss of appetite, muscle or joint aches and pains and headaches. Start taking paracetamol and/ or ibuprofen straight away along with plenty of fluids as you would for any other viral bug. In the vast majority of normally fit people this will work quickly to help you recover. If you feel worse over the next 24-48 hours despite this then you can phone the flu line ( 0800 1 513 513 ) for advice as the medication tamiflu is most effective in the first 48 hours. Sites for further information are: www.swinefluinfo.leeds.nhs.uk www.hpa.org.uk www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu Remember regular hand and surface washing and the use of alcohol gels is a good way to help stop the spread at work.

Let the festive feelings begin... Aye up! Exciting times! This article was written on my very own sexy Samsung netbook a Christmas present to myself. Ridiculous as it sounds but I’ve never owned a computer of my own. I’ve always shared with partners over the years and they have always hogged the usage. I can’t see my husband wanting to go on this device as it is white with a pearl effect, very cute and very girly – ideal for me and fits perfectly into my handbag. I got it from www.ebuyer.com and it has totally transformed my whole existence. And now my husband doesn’t have to get all paranoid every time I use his precious Mac! Or have to delete any of the dodgy history on it. Hope Santa brings you one this Christmas and if not, pick one up in the New Year and gift wrap it to yourself. I used to be a complete technophobe, which might seem strange for someone who works in a radio station that resembles something off of Star Trek, but with an overwhelming choice of gadgets and gizmos available it’s easy to feel intimidated. Yes 2009 has definitely been a technological journey of discovery for me. I even have a Facebook account which I never thought would happen (I didn’t think I had the time or the inclination very addictive) and an iphone! My close friends are shocked at the new technologically fearless me. Don’t get me wrong I’m no expert but I now have more than enough skills and confidence to navigate my way round. Oh gosh – I’ve turned into a computer nerd. Geekdom is calling!

some appearances from me at ‘The Rock Bar’ as it’s our intention to do some ‘Back to JoJo’s’ monthly parties there in the new year. If you’ve never listened to my weekend show on Galaxy, then I’ll understand as it is on at quite an antisocial time – 2am to 6am on Sunday mornings. But if you have Sky you can Skyplus it! Check me and technology again! Also keep checking online as Galaxy is to install a listen again facility on the website meaning that you won’t have to be completely nocturnal to listen to Galaxy’s brilliant weekend output. You’ll be able to listen at your leisure - happy days! That’s ww.galaxyfm. com. Obviously I’m still doing the breakfast show alongside Hirsty and Danny, Monday to Friday when you wake up, but I do like to moonlight of a weekend with numerous others including ‘The Haggis Horns’ who appear with me and my better half this Chrimbob on ‘Back to JoJo’s’ Christmas special (27th December to hear this show – but if you are reading this in the new year you’ll have missed it!). One more quick thing on the food front, I recently dined at the multi-award winning Chino Latino after tons of recommendations and I was blown away by the fantastic pan Asian menu in particular the beef salad. Yes salad never tasted so good! It’s quite pricey but worth every penny and ideal for an anniversary or celebration. Anyway – enough chat from me I need to get on with my sewing. I’ve just learnt how to use a sewing machine and am planning on making a lot of gifts this Christmas including a zebra costume for my three year old son who is obsessed with the monochrome creatures. And if any of my friends or family are reading this – I would like some jewellery for Christmas from Links of London in the Victoria Quarter. They have some fantastic pieces in there especially the DJ range, which features pendants of solid silver cassettes, jack plugs and even a volume knob…hint, hint... Have a great Christmas and even better new year and don’t forget you can download our breakfast show podcast for free from Galaxyfm. com or subscribe to it off of iTunes, just search for Hirsty’s Daily Dose – simple to do and it’ll fill some space on that new ipod you received this Christmas.

Obviously I don’t have much free time now I’m a fully fledged Facebooker but I have managed to get myself out of late and Leeds has a couple of new additions on the bar front. One being ‘District’ near Ace Clothing and the other being ‘The Rock Bar’ on Call Lane recently opened by the legendary Tony Hannon of Up Your Ronson\ MTV parties in Ibiza fame. My husband Jake has started a new Friday night down there called ‘Eclectic Avenue’ (awesome name) playing all the amazing music we play on ‘Back to JoJo’s’, my weekend show on Galaxy. So if you fancy listening to some truly assorted music make sure you go down to get down! It’s free to get in and in the daytime they specialise in the food of gods! No, not lobster or caviar but good old fashioned cheese on toast including halloumi, dolcelatte and good old fashioned cheddar – slurp. It’s simple. It’s the future! Keep an eye out for Ciao for now! xx

NEW CHIEF INSPECTOR PLEDGES TO MAKE LEEDS CITY CENTRE EVEN SAFER Leeds city centre’s new Chief Inspector has pledged to make it an even safer place. Vernon Francis returned to the city centre last week having been based within the City and Holbeck area at every rank of his policing career. and on his appointment, Chief Inspector Francis has pledged to work as closely as possible with all partners involved in the city to make it an even safer place to be, 24 hours a day.

Part of Chief Inspector Francis’ role will be to introduce a new strategy to deter and tackle violent crime within the city centre. Chief Inspector Francis said: “The simple fact is that serious violent crime and disorder is

rare within the city centre, and one of the reasons for this is the hard work done by Neighbourhood Policing Team officers and representatives from other agencies. “But by working closer together we can have even more of an impact by reducing the number of violent offences and dealing swiftly with the minority when they attempt to spoil everyone else’s enjoyment of the city.” Chief Inspector Francis joined West Yorkshire Police in 1982, having previously played Rugby League professionally, and having been posted to Millgarth Police Station he continued to play for Featherstone Rovers. As a uniformed patrol officer, he was one of the first officers on the scene when Sgt John Speed was shot near Leeds Parish Church on Wednesday, 31 October, 1984. On his arrival, he found Sgt Speed had been shot dead and his colleague PC John Thorpe had been seriously injured from a gunshot. In 1988 he became a Drugs Squad officer involved in undercover and surveillance work, and later moved into the Task Force Firearms and Search Team where he was involved in searches to locate incendiary devices secreted in Leeds stores by the

Animal Liberation Front. He was also part of the search team that travelled to Grantham and recovered the ransom money used in the Stephanie Slater kidnap and Julie Dart murder enquiry. On promotion to Sergeant in 1992, he returned to Millgarth Police Station to take charge of 19 officers in the Drugs Unit, Shoplifters Squad and Divisional Taskit Team. He was then posted to the Operations Division in 1996 where he led one of the 10 teams, before returning to the City and Holbeck Division in 2004 on promotion to Inspector. He originally led a patrol team before becoming Inspector for the Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team. He was based at Rothwell unto 2007, when he was posted to Operations Support on promotion to Chief Inspector. Chief Insp Francis said: “I have extremely close ties with the city of Leeds and have loved working here since becoming a beat bobby. “I’m extremely proud to be responsible for policing in the city centre and will work as hard as possible to ensure it is a safer place for everyone connected with it.”

contact us: The City Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) is inviting residents to get in touch to help decide our policing priorities for their local area. There are a series of contact opportunities for local people to make their voices heard and influence NPT officers’ work in the city. The NPT host monthly meetings at Millgarth Police Station where people can attend to discuss issues that affect the city and receive updates from officers on the progress made in tackling these. The next meeting will be held on 12 January, at a time to be decided. Officers also hold regular meetings at The Plaza student accommodation, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds City Markets, The Tannery, City Dweller | 12

Liberty Park, Concept Place, the Opal buildings, Marshall Mills, The Rosebowl, the Victoria Quarter and Concord Street Apartments. You can contact an NPT officer by visiting the Millgarth Police Station Helpdesk between 8am and 8pm Monday to Saturday, by ringing 0113 2413101, by texting 07850 080242 and starting your message with CANPT, by emailing cacommunity@westyorkshire.pnn.police. uk. Details of NPT officers’ daily activities is now being posted on Twitter too! You can follow them at Millgarth NPT. Chief Inspector Vernon Francis said: “The

opinions of people living and working in Leeds city centre are key to everything we do, which is why it’s so important to us to hear what you have to say. “We always act on the information you give us and use it to define the NPT’s policing priorities for the weeks and months ahead. Please contact us about any issues you experience which you want us to act on.”

LEEDS’ NEWEST DEVELOPMENTS WHY NOT DISCOVER MANOR MILLS AND ECHO CENTRAL? Both developments are located in the heart of Leeds City Centre. Apartments at Manor Mills and Echo Central start from £500 pcm DixonLaw Residential is a Leeds city centre specialist in sales and lettings of quality properties. The firm was set up 3 years ago and is managed by Tanya Brocksom. Due to increased instructions, in the letting market particularly, Tanya has recently recruited Leanne Cruickshank to assist her with the lettings enquiries and viewings, and commented: “I am delighted that Leanne has joined us, with her previous experience in the lettings business she will be an invaluable member of the team and has already made a good impression with our clients.” Leeds property management agent DixonLaw Residential, is the latest company to join the NALS nationwide letting scheme set up to provide a much-needed benchmark accreditation scheme to enable landlords and tenants to avoid the pitfalls of dealing with cowboy letting agents. NALS (the National Approved Letting Scheme) ensures that agents comply with defined service standards and have in place a customer complaints procedure offering independent redress through the Ombudsman for Estate Agents Scheme, Professional Indemnity Insurance, Client Money Protection cover and access to Tenancy Deposit protection. The scheme is supported by some of the most powerful voices in the property industry. The British Property federation (BPF), National Landlords Association (NLA), Sanctuary Shaftesbury Housing, the National Union of Students (NUS) and the guild of Letting and Management are all Directors of the scheme. Whilst Shelter, National Federation of property Professionals (NFOPP) and RICS endorse NALS. Accreditation is open to any firm operating in the lettings sector who meets NALS strict criteria for accreditation. NALS Operation Director Isobel Thomson comments: NALS service standards are the customers benchmark against which to judge the performance of letting and management agents operating in the private rented sector and we are delighted to welcome DixonLaw Residential to the scheme. Agents such as DixonLaw Residential are in the vanguard of a drive to establish uniform service standards in the industry. Those agents who are not prepared to meet the standards required by NALS and, most importantly, the public, will not survive for long. Colin Dixon of DixonLaw Residential adds: “We see our NALS membership as an excellent opportunity to increase business within our letting and management department. This visible assurance provided by the NALS logo gives prospective landlords and tenants the confidence of knowing the service they can expect from dealing with us.” More information on the National Approved Letting Scheme and details of how to contact your local NALS agent can be obtained by calling NALS on 01242 581 712, email: info@nalscheme.co.uk or visiting the NALS website at www.nalsceme.co.uk

DixonLaw Residential is the property arm of DixonLaw Ltd. Celebrating its first year of business in January 2008, the residential agency has excelled – now with over 100 properties on its books. Contact Tanya Brocksom for details of sales, rentals and our landlord-focussed services.

FREEDOM FROM BACK PAIN IN THE CITY Most of us take our backs for granted until, that is, you suddenly experience pain and discomfort. Even the smallest tweak can leave you in agony and result in sleepless nights and pain-filled days. If this is something you have experienced you are not alone. According to the Health and Safety Executive four out of five Britons will be affected by back pain resulting in 4.9 million workdays being lost each year. Despite the potential demand from sufferers it can be difficult to receive treatment if you are a city dweller or city centre worker, as the sector is predominantly made up of single practitioners located in the suburbs who open at inconvenient times. That is why we have launched Freedom Back Clinics, a brand new concept in back care. Our first ultra-modern clinic opened a couple of months ago on King Street, right in the heart of Leeds city centre. We have transformed the 3,000 sq ft ground floor into five high-tech consulting and treatment rooms, X-ray room and a fast track treatment area designed to accommodate busy city centre workers. On hand to give you the very best treatment and advice is our fully qualified and experienced team of osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists and acupuncturists, supported by our friendly team of patient advisers.

In addition to being centrally located, the clinic is open until 7.30pm to provide flexible treatment hours to fit in with your busy schedule. We even provide a 24-hour online booking facility for even greater convenience. Recently introduced is our ten minute fully clothed, ‘express massage treatment’ so you can relax those tense muscles having been hunched over a computer all day. With plans to open 40 Freedom Back Clinics nationwide in the next five years, we are delighted to have opened our first one in Leeds. To celebrate we are offering a free spinal assessment if you contact us before the end of January and say you read about us in City Dweller. If you know someone who suffers from a bad back or pains and niggles, why not get them a Freedom Back Clinics gift voucher. It could be the best present they have ever had. So now you don’t have to put up with those aches and pains in your back anymore. Come and see us and we will give you your Freedom Back!

New Project for Disabled Homeless Launches in Leeds A new project supporting people who are disabled and homeless launched on Thursday 26th November at St Georges Crypt, Leeds. The service is part of a new initiative from leading national charity, The Disabilities Trust.

The Disabilities Trust Foundation has employed a specialist alcohol worker who will work with service users to improve their quality of life and build a sustainable support network with local services. A research associate has also been hired to study the link-worker to ensure maximum possible impact, with the aim of rolling the project out across the country. Trustee for the Disabilities Trust, Christine Yorath attended the event. Christine, a prominent Leeds property developer is already a keen supporter of the work carried out by St George’s Crypt, in her hometown of Leeds. She said “The centre is at the forefront of provision for homeless, disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the city; established over 79 years ago it serves 35,000 people a year but there is a real need for specialist support at the centre for those with alcohol or drug dependency who also have acquired brain injury or autism.” Chris Fields, CEO, St Georges Crypt said “We want to provide a service that will enable our existing service users with disabilities to work closely with professionals who can support individual needs. We hope that this groundbreaking project will be at the forefront of disability and homeless care provision in the city.” The launch was attended by over 50 people including local dignitaries and representatives from health services across Yorkshire and was a great success.

They have been described as one of the most exciting new bands to come from Leeds in a long time. In just eight short months, indie rockers Sound Of Sirens have achieved much. Set to release their debut single in December, the Leeds based five piece are hoping for a breakout year in 2010. Originally formed by guitarist Mick Bray, it was the arrival of local Leeds vocalist Robert Doherty which made for a turning point, and the start of a successful songwriting relationship. Deciding that the current crop of musicians at the time were not right for their vision, they set about bringing together some likeminded musicians to work with. At the end of March this year, the band was finalized. The addition of powerful drummer John Whicker was complimented by the arrival of Bassist Pete Davies, and second guitarist Danny Madden. The group went into the rehearsal room and set about crafting their sound. Within a few weeks, the group decided to start gigging in Leeds. Soon enough, glowing reviews started to pour in, not only for their electrifying live shows, but also for their sound, which seemed to mix

heavy rock with more radio friendly melodies and funk bass lines. Taking inspiration from the positive feedback, the group began to record songs for their upcoming album, set for release in 2010. Gigging constantly for the entire year, the group have gained a reputation as a stellar live act, and have recently began to play the more popular venues in the city such as the legendary cockpit, in support of larger, nationally touring bands. December sees the release of their self distributed double A side single, titled ‘sketch my vision’ which has proved popular with live crowds at their shows. For a band tipped by reviewers as ‘potentially the next big band to come out of Leeds’ and ‘breathtaking live’ it seems that 2010 could well be a big year for sound of sirens. To find out more about the band, you can visit them on MySpace at www.myspace.com/soundofsirens666. The ‘Sketch My Vision’ / ‘Fast or Slow’ single is available now through digital download via iTunes, Amazon MP3, Beatport etc, and copies of the single are available from crash records & jumbo in Leeds, or directly from the band themselves at gigs.

REGGAETON CON FLOW is a new monthly night held at BAR 4 in Leeds city centre, and features the celebrated DJ SILVAO. You might have seen him at CARNAVAL (The Faversham). REGGAETON CON FLOW combines reggaeton with electro flow, dancehall and Latin R&B, and it’s exactly what Leeds has been missing. If you’re passionate about music and love to dance - but maybe think you’ve heard it all before -

ThIS COuLD BE ThE ALTERNATIVE NIGhT FOR YOu. This night is proving popular with students as well as a cross-section of Leeds’ international community. It’s certainly hit a cultural nerve - clubbers say they can really relate to the sound and the rhythms being showcased. DJ Silvao is well-known for his unique mixes, and he’s created some very catchy dancefloor Latin mixes of popular chart songs specifically for the club nights - so there’s a little bit of something for everyone, Spanish speaking or not. Bar 4 is an ideal venue for this party - downstairs is ideal for chilling and chatting to friends and upstairs has a very spacious dance floor with a brilliant sound system. There’s an outdoor terrace overlooking the quiet end of Sovereign Street, ideal for hanging out and soaking in the City nightlife.

men’s HealtH It’s great being a man! We don’t get PMS every month, we don’t give birth, we don’t go through the menopause and we don’t need to sit down to go to the toilet! Women say we have it easy and in some respects they’re right. However, because we have it easy, we tend to think we don’t have to look after ourselves as much as women do. They’re always preening and fussing with their weight, diet and so on, whereas men generally just be men and get on with it. Normally I would be a supporter of ‘getting on with it’, but when we look at the figures we see that men die on average five years younger than women with the biggest killer being heart disease, I definitely think that attitude needs changing.

Heart disease: Did you

know that 1.5 times more men die from heart disease than women? And under the age of 65, three times more men than women die from heart attacks?

CanCer: 1.5. times more men die from cancer than women! Men have a higher probability of developing cancer and don’t survive as long once they’ve been diagnosed. suiCide: Rates of suicide are, on average, four times higher for men than women. For most age groups suicide rates have remained unchanged since 1946, but for those aged 15 to 24 years the rate has increased 250% and 6

out of 7 are male. Not only are diseases trying to keep us from ageing with our women but we actually kill ourselves a lot more too! Diabetes Nearly 1.5 times more men than women die from diabetes which is one of the fastest growing diseases in the UK due to obesity.

it’s not looking so good for all us men. I guess the question is: Is being able to pee while standing worth all the risks that come with being a man? Well, I think yes! It’s worth it because every single cause of death mentioned above can be greatly reduced by a healthy lifestyle, exercise and nutrition. Check out the facts below before you start considering that sex change.

Heart disease: a recent study in the British Medical Journal found that exercise in middle age reduces the risk of premature death from heart disease. It shows this reduction of risk from heart disease is similar to smokers kicking the habit. People who are physically active are half as likely to get cardiovascular disease as those that are inactive. Most men know this but it’s time we start helping ourselves.

CanCer: Let’s start with the obvious one, lung cancer.

Lung cancer affects more men than women: Smoking is the biggest risk factor! If we men all decided to quit smoking

by mark HugHes

we would raise our nation’s life expectancy for males in an instant. Simply ‘kick the habit’. Prostate cancer is the second biggest cancer death rate for men, yet this month the Journal of Urology found that among men diagnosed with prostate cancer, 51 percent of sedentary patients had more aggressive cancer, versus 22 percent of those who had been mildly active (getting the equivalent of one to three hours of moderate walking per week).

suiCide: Many studies have

found that exercise, more specifically ‘vigorous aerobic exercise’ reduces anxiety and depression. Depression is what leads to suicide. Other studies have found that males who participate in team sports have significantly less suicidal thoughts than non-participants suggesting that team sports that are vigorous like football are the best to stave off suicidal thoughts. It’s thought that the endorphins (feel good hormones) that are released after exercise are the cause for the effect.

diabetes: Physical activity helps to prevent type 2 diabetes and manage the condition of those with diabetes, along with a healthy diet and weight maintenance. A study done by the Harvard School of Public Health and published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that being overweight and obese was the single most important risk factor that predicted who would develop type 2 diabetes. During a 16 year follow-up

period, study results showed that regular exercise (at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week) and an improved diet that’s low in fat and high in fibre significantly helped with type 2 diabetes prevention. The bottom line: type 2 diabetes prevention could be as easy as adopting healthy lifestyle habits. So when you look at the solutions we don’t have it bad at all, as long as we adopt healthy lifestyles there should be no physical reason why we can not only live at least to the same age as our better halves but also feel fantastic along the way! - mark HugHes

This month City Dweller returns with another fantastic installment of ‘The Real Review!’ Each month Real Radio’s Dixie will be here to provide you, the reader, an insight into what’s HOT and what’s NOT in the CD charts!

ROBBIE WILLIAMS REALITY KILLED THE VIDEO STAR

JLS JLS

FOO FIGHTERS GREATEST HITS

1

4

3

These are the lads that didn’t win X Factor; Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes’, Jonathan “JB” Gill and Oritsé Williams who together make up JLS (Jack the Lad Swing). This album of 13 perfectly crafted R&B/Pop songs, many of which include writing credits for the boys, feels like a hybrid of so many bands and singers around today.

From the wild boy who could do no wrong, Robbie has become such a household name he’s almost started to blend in with the wallpaper. He really needs a big album, or moreover a single, to underpin the genius status that gave us classics like Millennium, She’s The One, and Angels. Reality Killed the Video Star sees the big guns of legendary producer Trevor Horn step up to try and put Robbie back where he should be; recouping some of the £80m advance he got so publicly in 2001.

Dave Grohl has been very public in his opposition to this release, though let’s make it clear from the off; this album is brilliant. Grohl has turned out to be an awesome songwriter, all round musician and an iconic figure in the world of rock. Not a band you’ll hear on our station, but our sister station, the home of classic rock, Rock Radio (www.rockradio.co.uk) love this one. Once the drummer in Nirvana, the band that gave birth to grunge, Dave Grohl went through various transitions following the tragic death of Kurt Cobain and subsequently the band.

Within a year of losing the biggest talent show on the planet, JLS have had two number one singles (three if you count the X Factor ‘Hero’ charity single) and this going straight in at #1, equals winner Alexander Burke’s chart performance. The first single Beat Again won a Best Song MOBO Award and is a nice MTV friendly tune, while Everybody in Love is so Boys II Men it’s worrying; a good song all the same. The album rolls back and forth from pseudo R&B like Close To You, One Shot or Tightrope, to Justin Timberlake wannabes like Private, the euro pop of Only Tonight, the awful Kick Start and Only Making Love. There is no real soul in the album, too many mixed messages and no songs of any real believable substance. While JLS may be able to light a candle to their idols, it will be a very long time before they are able to hold one to them. Get it while they’re hot!

QUEEN ABSOLUTE GREATEST 2 Does what it says on the tin. These are the greatest hits and all on one CD. This is not one for dinner parties as it’s pretty full on right from the tribal drums of We Will Rock You, through all 20 tracks, with a slight respite for Who Wants To Live Forever and The Show must Go On before possibly the greatest song of all time, Bohemian Rhapsody, closes the set. As a unit Queen were a formidable force and Freddie was one of the greatest singers of all time. The band wrote the hits individually as well as a band, as we see here in the first five tracks; the opener by Brian May, Radio Ga Ga by Roger Taylor, Another One Bites The Dust by John Deacon, We Are The Champions by Freddie and the whole band credited with I Want It All. The brief union with Paul Rodgers was ok for touring but ill advised when it came to recording a new album. Freddie was the heart and soul of Queen, he was the pomp and ceremony and this encapsulates just a morsel of that. It’s a tiny snapshot of one of the greatest and most original bands of the 20th Century. They remain the bench mark for all that follow.

So, we kick off with Morning Sun, a pleasant enough mid-tempo song which Robbie performs with ease, but it’s not good enough to reflect the input the six people it took to write it. The first single, Bodies, follows. It’s quirky and the hook is reminiscent of Millennium but it tries too hard to be ‘cool’ and ends up falling short. ‘Bodies’ was the barometer for the album and as the lead single it should have ripped the doors off their hinges and been a dead cert #1. But it fell short at #2, pipped at the post by X Factor’s Alexandra Burke. The next single, You Know Me is based on an original song from 1967 called Voilà by French artist Françoise Hardy. This is another midtempo Robbie standard with a huge build that you can just imagine hearing 180,000 people at the likes of Knebworth singing along to. It’s a good track but still, not the albums saviour. Blasphemy is a sweet little tune and sees Robbie back with his old writing partner, Guy Chambers; “So what about the great depression, was it a blast for you? ‘cause it was a Blasphemy..” he sings. It’s a little painful to listen to sometimes because you know he’s spilling his heart out, but maybe that’s just what Robbie needed to do to get back to the Robbie his fans know and love. Over and above that, the album is littered with familiar echoes but rolls through very nicely and is overall a good listen. Do You Mind is a snarling rocker, Last Days Of Disco should be a duet with the Pet Shop Boys, Somewhere is a 62 second Beatles-esque vignette, but there’s nothing on a par with the likes of the aforementioned classics or Rock DJ and certainly nothing to touch Let Me Entertain You.

Dixie presents The Real Breakfast on 106 - 108fm Real Radio every weekday 6am to 10am, available on FM and internet at www.realradioyorkshire.co.uk

Featuring tracks from all six studio albums, the Foo Fighters mix power pop/rock with some seriously brilliant riff led hard edged rock. The Pretender has to be one of the best rock songs of recent years as it deceives you with its soft acoustic guitar intro, layered with Grohl’s gentle vocal which suddenly jars into the angrier choppier verse, until it kicks the doors in on its mighty chorus… Brilliant and a typical build on a Foo Fighters track. The obligatory two new tracks are ‘Wheels’ which is fresh and relevant and a prime cut followed by ‘Word Forward,’ which stands up as an excellent album track. The great thing here is oldies can say they love Foo Fighters and hip young things can say they love Foo Fighters and both are right. Foo Fighters transcend generations and are awesome. If you want the proof, buy this.

SNOW PATROL UP TO NOW

5 Those who have been with Snow Patrol since their debut Songs for Polar Bears album will have most of what we are presented with here. But for many, Eye’s Open was Snow Patrol’s first album so this could be a journey of great discovery. I just hope they travel past the hits to songs like 1998’s brilliant Starfighter Pilot from that first album or On/ Off from 2001’s When It’s All Over We Still Have To Clear Up. It took Snow Patrol three albums, (four if you count Gary Lightbody’s ‘indie supergroup’ The Reindeer Section’s release) before they really hit big with Run, from The Final Straw followed by the real monster; Chasing Cars from Eye’s Open. When you listen across this collection, their sound, which would have been classed as ‘indie,’ has stayed true and they have made their sound mainstream. The production is sharper but basically, the fact is they have always been really good. Featuring three new songs, one of which ‘Just Say Yes’ was the first single, Up To Now is 30 great tracks across a 2 CD set and is vital listening.

HELPING MEN STAY HEALTHY Good health is important because it allows you to get the most out of life. With today’s busy lives, managing your professional life, looking after your family and keeping up with your friends and hobbies, it’s sometimes difficult to take a step back and think about health. Many conditions that affect men’s health often happen gradually and can sometimes go unnoticed. A problem may start as a minor niggle, and before you know it you’ve learned to live with it, putting any concerns aside as you get on with your life. Also, you may not know that it can be treated. Nuffield hospitals are a registered charity that has over 50 years experience in healthcare and over that time we have treated men for a range of conditions. There isn’t much we haven’t seen or heard, so you can feel comfortable in talking to us about your own health. Common problems effecting men’s health include the following:

• • • • • • • • • • •

Hair Loss Varicose Veins Weight Gain Hernias Moles and Skin Damage High Blood Pressure Poor eye sight Prostate Cancer Breast Cancer Testicular Cancer Enlarged Male Breasts

For all of these problems (and many more) we have the expertise and the time dedicated to helping you resolve any concerns. Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital is hosting a free men’s health event in January 2010 for people that may have concerns in any of these areas but at a loss as to what to do next. For more information on the event, or for any other queries please contact Sonia Rhodes on 0113 388 2059 to discuss further At Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital, we’re totally dedicated to healthcare and how it can make your life better. Our specialist staff are always on hand to explain any issues in a reliable, professional way. You’ll feel at ease with a familiar team and if appropriate we will provide a treatment that is tailored just to you. City Dweller | 25

I hate fake flowers! To me flowers signify freshness, vitality and a beautiful scent, to ‘plasticify’ them is just wrong. I’m on the train on my way back from London after filming an advert for The Daily Mail and presenting the Euromillions lottery with Tim Vincent, and these neon pink lilies are sat with a deathly perfection that actually makes me shiver! Maybe it is their ‘perfection’ that I dislike so much; nothing in life is perfect, so why try to fake it? As this issue is themed around health and beauty, I thought I’d scour out the most innovative beauty treatments to freshen your face for your festive frivolities! (Try saying that after a few mulled wines!)

A huge new craze in L.A - as a result of

filmstars desperately seeking facial rejuvenation after directors have been banning botox because of its obvious muscle paralysis and inevitable expressionless facial performances - is the ‘acupuncture face lift’! Guess what: I found a therapist perfectly situated in the treatment rooms above Neals Yard in Victoria Quarter for all us city dwellers. There have been extreme claims from those dramatic Americans such as “it can take 10 years off you” etc etc, but I’ve found some more plausible effects of this cosmetic acupuncture. It is believed to lessen signs of ageing from the face, fine lines, jowls firmed, droopy eyelids lifted, improved moisturisation of skin; increased local circulation of blood and lymph to the face; increased collagen production; improved muscle tone, and dermal contraction; tightening of the pores; brightening of the eyes; with results usually apparent after just a few treatments. Sounds pretty good to me! Jermaine quickly questioned my state of mind as I booked an appointment with the reality being that I was going to let a guy I don’t know stick needles in my face...but you’ve got to take risks in life and the acupuncturist (Tim from Triangle Therapies) reassured me he has all the qualifications. From our first meeting, Tim seems a very genuine guy, a picture of new-age hippiness. He started to find pressure points on my lower legs and gently inserted these tiny needles. Tim uses silicon-coated needles from Japan, although they cost more than double the normal needles, especially for the face, as they are apparently a lot less painful. This was much appreciated as, although I didn’t feel a few of the needles go in, you do feel a teeny prick. After 15 minutes of looking like a voodoo doll, he took them out and gave me a wonderfully deep facial massage, like I’ve never experienced before. I loved feeling like he was actually stimulating my muscles to lift and I’m sure the increase in blood circulation will help my skin’s appearance if nothing else! My face was a little red in patches after the treatment but looked very refreshed, as it usually does after a facial. Perhaps my genetically misfortuned drooping jowls have been lifted slightly or perhaps that’s my positive thinking?!

So I booked a couple more treatments, one week apart as this is recommended to notice any kind of change. The second time, I was much more prepared but still baffled and intrigued by the sensations, again the massage was welcomed after the needles and I did leave feeling revitalised and Jermaine did comment on my glowing skin! Third time around...and the poll says I look 16! Result! No - no poll just my man, my mum and the blatant honesty of 30 little children at Ology Performance School, which I own and run every Saturday morning. So the conclusion for the acupuncture face lift; it intrigued me and I guess still does. I have noticed I’m not wearing foundation half as much as I used to, which is rare for me in winter and I have had a few ‘you look really well comments’ - always nice! Personally, there is no comparison with botox, as acupuncture is holistic and botox is poison, paralysing your muscles, simple. Plus, I don’t want to look like a robot; I’m a very expressive person and the lines on my face show that! I like that the acupuncture worked on the energy and overall body wellness, which in turn shows in your face and I do think it did. For a few weeks before a special occasion I’m sure it will help you radiate inner beauty. Check our www.triangletherpsies.co.uk to book yours.

Love love love Minx nails - seen on the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna, these nails look fantastic, I can’t wear them every day because of my modelling but I shall be rocking them New Year’s Eve! Available from Bliss Spa in Headingley and West Park for £24. Beyonce - after watching her at the MEN, I have a new found adoration for her; she sounds better live than on her album, looks better than any airbrushed magazine shoot and has a aura and presence on stage that left me simply in awe, just incredible - Jermaine and I were singing so loud I couldn’t speak the next day! Studded boots - as Leeds is so small, I’m reluctant to mention this as I haven’t seen anyone in them yet but I’m loving my new Australian Luxe ‘Angel’ sheepskin boots, I think they’re exclusive to Harvey Nichols too! Until next time, good bye and take care...

Christmas with the... T H E C R AV E N DA L E FESTIVE CHALLENGE

RHINOS FANS IN FOR A TREAT THIS CHRISTMAS AT HEADINGLEY CARNEGIE...

Leeds Rhinos fans are in for a treat this Boxing Day with a host of Rhinos stars running out for the Champions in the Cravendale Festive Challenge against Wakefield at Headingley Carnegie, kick off 11.30am. The fact that only four Rhinos are on duty with England during the Gillette Four Nations and Kylie Leuluai away with Samoa means that coach Brian McClennan will have the majority of the Grand Final winning squad to pick from for the annual clash with Wakefield. New signing Brett Delaney will make his first appearance for the Rhinos whilst the likes of Rob Burrow, Carl Ablett, Ryan Bailey, Danny Buderus, Brent Webb, Scott Donald, Ali Lauitiiti, Luke Burgess and Ian Kirke could all feature on Boxing Day. For Rob Burrow it will mean his first festive outing since 2004 and the scrum half admits he is looking forward to it. “Boxing Day is a great occasion and I am looking forward to playing in it this year. The last few years I have been sat in the stand supporting the guys but it will be good to be involved this year. For a lot of us, Boxing Day was our first chance to show what we can do in the first team when we were youngsters and it is amazing to think what we have gone on to achieve as a group since then. I am looking forward to playing alongside Brett Delaney, it is always hard for a player when he comes into a new environment but hopefully getting a game under his belt early will help him settle in.” This will be the sixth consecutive year that Leeds have met Wakefield in the Cravendale Festive Challenge with the Rhinos winning the first three and the Wildcats looking to level the series this year after back to back wins. Commenting on the game, Chief Executive Gary Hetherington said: “Unlike last year with the World Cup, there are only a handful of players who will miss the start of pre-season this year. Everyone else will begin preseason at the end of the month and be available for Boxing Day with the exception of Keith Senior and Jamie Jones-Buchanan who had operations at the end of last season. Brian McClennan will have to assess the fitness of his players nearer the time but it certainly looks like an exciting line up at this stage. “There will also be an opportunity for players like Jay Pitts, Kyle Amor and Michael Coady to show what they can do as they look to press their claims for a first team spot. Jay has won the last two Cravendale Festive Challenge games but with Wakefield so hopefully he will be lucky for us this time!” added Hetherington.

Project A met as professional dancers for the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team four years ago (Amy has been dancing there 10 years and is co-manager and co-choreographer). Their first ever gig was at Elland Road where they performed to over 32,000 people.

We have also put our vocals on a track with Tom Zanetti, produced by DJ Alex Simmons and Ian Bland who are well known in the club scene.

This year the girls hung up their pom poms and auditioned for X Factor 2009 where over 200,000 acts auditioned and Project A made it to the final 24! They made the last six groups in the country and to the mentors stages of the competition. Project A have been described as having the personality of the Spice Girls combined with the full package performance show of the Pussycat Dolls. “We just want to have fun and hope that the energy we have comes across in our performance, we want to put on a show!” Amy says “The X Factor experience was amazing, we became even closer as a group, we had great fun and we even had helpful advice from other competitors such as Danyl Johnson.” Lucy says: “It was great putting Leeds on the map, everyone says we came across really likeable and I think that’s because we are Leeds lasses.” Leeds is a great city and a great place to shop and

Bringing it back to our roots, in December we are performing at the Rhinestones Christmas show (Rhinos cheerleading academy). We are also performing at a Legends of Rugby event on 17th Dec in Sheffield where stars of rugby league and rugby union will be playing against each other (more details can be found on the Rhinos website). We have potential management based in London so that is very exciting. “We have worked so hard by ourselves that it will be nice to have someone helping us reach our goals and make our dreams a reality.”

GRAYSON’S MEN IN POLE POSITION

MAX IS MAD FOR IT AT LEEDS

SPEND CHRISTMAS AT ELLAND ROAD

LEEDS UNITED head towards the festive period with a tight grip on the League One promotion race.

Leeds United loan man Max Gradel was delighted to secure his short-term future with the club, following an extension to his loan move.

Elland Road will be the only place to be this Christmas as Simon Grayson’s men look to end 2009 on a high on home soil.

After 18 games, Simon Grayson’s side were six points clear at the top of the division and were a whopping 10 points clear in the promotion places.

The 22 year old, who joined from Leicester City for an initial month, had his stay extended until January 2 after impressing both the manager and the Elland Road fans.

United entertain Southampton on Saturday December 19 and the manager celebrates his first anniversary as Leeds United boss seven days later when the club entertain Hartlepool United on Boxing Day.

The 1-0 defeat of Leyton Orient at Elland Road at the end of November saw the unbeaten home record stretch to 20 matches and, as the New Year beckons, Grayson’s men are established as the firm favourites to book a Championship return.

Gradel struck the winning goal against Orient in November and walked away from Elland Road with his second Man of the Match award of the month.

As a special festive offer, if fans buy a ticket for Southampton and Hartlepool in the same transaction they can purchase a Hartlepool ticket at a Category B price.

But the manager is determined to keep his feet and the feet of his players firmly on the ground.

“I’m very happy to be back here,” said Max, “Leeds asked Leicester, and Leicester didn’t say no, so I’m really happy. Leicester thought it was best for me, and best for me to keep playing first team football.

Tickets are on sale now to members and go on general sale on Wednesday December 2. Call 0871 334 1992 to book or visit leedsunited.com

“We’ve had a great start to the season and we’re in a great position,” he said. “There’s a lot of other clubs who would love to be in the position we’re in – but there’s still a long way to go. Promotions aren’t won in November and December, they are won in May and it’s where we are then that counts. “What we’ve done is given ourselves a platform with the start we’ve had. We’ve shown a good level of consistency and we keep raising the standards higher and higher. I thought we were terrific when we won 4-0 at Bristol Rovers, but then we went to Brighton and turned in what I felt was our best performance of the season. “It’s all about keeping it going. We have the players here who have a real belief in what they are doing. There’s no complacency among them and if they see other players slacking they tell them. That’s how it should be.”

“I haven’t spoken with the Leicester manager, but I hope to speak to him in January to see what options are available to me. I don’t know what will happen, but I want to play first team football and we’ll talk about it in January, and see what the best thing is.

Please note: This offer is only available until 5pm Friday December 18

“It’s Leicester’s decision and we’ll see, but I need to do what’s best for me at the moment.” The player has settled in quickly with United. “The manager, the staff, and the players have helped me settle down quickly and I’m enjoying it here,” he added. “I need to get more confidence and get my fitness levels high, and I’m looking to keep on going now. “We have a lot of games coming up that we have to be ready for, and I’m looking forward to things.”
