Little Women was first published as a children’s book in September 1868, meaning that the story will be 157 years old this autumn. This beloved story by Louisa May Alcott has seen countless adaptations over the years, each offering insights into contemporary concerns while also establishing the text firmly as a classic.
What exactly keeps readers coming back to this story? I think we all have a little Jo March inside of us. Someone who isn’t ready to be told what to do, or who feels frustrated at the path in front of them. Haven’t we all had a moment where we felt like
we didn’t quite fit the expectations of others? Jo lays her feelings out for us on the page, inviting us into her world, and making us feel less alone in our hopes, aspirations, and in our foibles; for we love people for their flaws just as much as we love them for their heroism.
A little research shows that Louisa May Alcott had reservations about this story – both in its inception and in its success. What exactly does it mean to be asked to write a story for girls?
Louisa - who often went by Lou - made many compromises in writing the novel. Little Women was inspired by Lou’s own family, and Jo is often thought of as an avatar for the author, who chose to remain a spinster. Writing Jo into a marriage was almost certainly a compromise requested by the publisher, so Lou chose to give Jo a partner that upholds her family’s unique values and allows her an intellectual freedom that would have been uncommon at the time.
People have always made compromises to survive in this world - particularly folks who suffer at the hands of inequitable systems. And if, like the March sisters, you are able to surround yourself with people who love you for who you really are, it will ease the suffering you might feel at the hands of society.
People love Jo March as a role model because she helps us to believe we don’t entirely have to be what society expects us to be. What does it mean to write a story for “girls”?
Despite more than 150 years having gone by, we know gender inequity is still a struggle. Children learn gendered expectations from family, caregivers, and educators from a very early age. Gendered stereotyping affects career choices, and can contribute to poor mental health, low self-esteem, and body image issues. We are still collectively working towards a time when all genders can access opportunities and rights without discrimination.
The Marches show us the strength and beauty of family and how it might help us overcome the challenges we face in life. Marmee loves each of her children for who they are, always encouraging them to seek their own truths and pursue them. The sisters learn early to be kind to others and to take care of each other, supporting each other through the best and worst of times. They support each other in spite of their differences – a path that isn’t always easy, but is worthwhile walking.
- Jenna Rodgers I Director
Could Little Women work as a video game? What would happen if the March sisters went on a reality show? Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is a beloved novel that has been adapted into multiple plays, films, television shows, operas, and has even been re-told as a werewolf horror story. The story’s tribute to sisterly love paired with its progressive views on a woman’s role in society is as poignant today as it was when the novel was written in 1868. As media and entertainment diversifies into multiple forms and platforms, how do today’s creators adapt our beloved classics into stories that are still worth telling? Before seeing Little Women, students will work with playwright and adapter, Ellen Chorley to discuss how adaptation takes stories from the page to the stage and even beyond!
Ellen Chorley (she/her) is an Edmonton-based playwright, producer, director and arts educator. She is the current Artistic & Festival Director of Nextfest (Edmonton’s annual emerging arts festival), the Academy Director of the Theatre Network Summer Academy, an acting and playwrighting teacher for Foote Theatre School at the Citadel, the Student’s Club Facilitator for the Citadel Theatre and produces theatre for young audiences under the banner of Promise Productions. As a playwright, Ellen has had plays produced all over Canada and recently her play Everybody Loves Robbie won the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama at Alberta Literary Awards.
