CITADEL

We are thrilled to welcome you to the Citadel Theatre for our 26th annual production of A Christmas Carol!

The Citadel’s Christmas Carol tradition began in 2000 with Tom Wood’s celebrated adaptation, which ran for 19 consecutive years. In 2019, to celebrate the 20th anniversary, we commissioned Edmonton playwright David van Belle to create a fresh and moving new version. This season marks our 7th year of David’s adaptation (including one year online!) and an incredible 26 years of A Christmas Carol at the Citadel.

If this is your first time joining us, welcome! We are so glad you are here, and we hope this will become a new part of your holiday tradition with us. To those who return year after year, thank you for making A Christmas Carol a cherished part of your celebrations.

We are proud to continue our long-standing partnership with Edmonton’s Food Bank. If you are able, please consider making a donation after the performance to support neighbours in need and help strengthen our community.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the hundreds of local artists, designers, craftspeople, technicians, stage managers, and staff whose artistry and dedication make this production possible. And thank you, once again, for celebrating the season with us. Your presence keeps the spirit of theatre alive at the Citadel throughout the year.

This year’s production is dedicated to our beloved colleague and friend, Julien Arnold, whose artistry, warmth, and generosity of spirit touched the hearts of all who knew him.

From all of us at the Citadel, we wish you a season filled with light, laughter, and joy!

Enjoy the show!

At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you.

We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan – Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands.

Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. We commit to this work through the sharing of resources, ongoing training, the inclusion of Indigenous stories, histories, and experiences in our programming, and by fostering meaningful relationships with the community.

In the spirit of reciprocity and respect, we seek to uphold the original intent of the Treaty and strive to create a shared narrative that honors our responsibility to this land and to each other.

This holiday season, we remember Julien Arnold, a cherished member of Edmonton’s theatre community, who passed away on November 24, 2024.

Born in Mbeya, Tanzania in 1965 and raised in British Columbia, Julien moved to Edmonton in 1986 to study acting at the University of Alberta, where his fearless spirit and joy for performance were evident from the very first moment he stepped onstage.

Over a 35-year career, Julien appeared in approximately 70 roles at the Citadel Theatre, co-founded Edmonton’s summer Freewill Shakespeare Festival, and launched his own Atlas Theatre Collective, leaving a lasting imprint on the city’s cultural landscape. He was beloved for his versatility, particularly in A Christmas Carol, where he played many different characters: from the devoted Bob Cratchit to Jacob Marley, Mr. Fezziwig, and even Ebenezer Scrooge himself. Julien brought warmth, humour, and heart to every role.

Beyond his performances, Julien nurtured young actors, created a spirit of camaraderie backstage, and treated every cast and crew member like family. His generosity and warmth extended past any single production as he helped shape the theatre community itself into a more connected, compassionate, and joyful place to create.

As we celebrate A Christmas Carol, we honour Julien’s legacy and the light and joy he brought to the Citadel Theatre and our hearts.

A HOLIDAY CLASSIC, WOVEN INTO EDMONTON’S

STORY

For more than a quarter century, A Christmas Carol has been part of The Citadel Theatre’s holiday heartbeat. This year, the beloved production celebrates its 26 th season, continuing a legacy that has become deeply woven into the festive fabric of Edmonton.

A Christmas Carol first premiered in December 2000 and quickly became a cornerstone of the city’s holiday celebrations. That original adaptation by Tom Wood ran for 19 years, enchanting generations of audiences. In 2019 the Citadel premiered a new adaptation by Edmonton playwright David van Belle. His new vision, set in the 1950s, breathed fresh life into Dickens’ timeless tale, and the tradition has joyfully continued ever since.

For many families, A Christmas Carol at the Citadel isn’t just a performance, it’s the official start of the holiday season. Whether it’s your first visit or part of your family’s cherished holiday ritual, we invite you to join us once again for this unforgettable celebration of community and compassion.

A TRADITION THAT SUSTAINS AND INSPIRES

Each season, A Christmas Carol represents more than a holiday favourite, it’s an investment in our city’s creative economy. Over the past 26 years, the Citadel has signed more than 1,400 contracts with artists, designers, and technicians, welcoming over 400,000 patrons through our doors. Because our sets and props are crafted and maintained in-house, we’re able to keep costs sustainable and reinvest in new Canadian voices through programs like our play development initiatives and the theatrically adventurous Highwire Series. The spirit of giving extends beyond the stage as well. Through our ongoing partnership with Edmonton’s Food Bank, audiences have helped raise over $1.6 million, funds that, with matching support from Capital Power, bring warmth and nourishment to families across the community. A reminder that this production doesn’t just tell a story of generosity — it lives it.

CELEBRATE THE SEASON TOGETHER

The Citadel is brimming with ways to make memories this winter. Supported by the City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund, we invite you to ring in the new year with New Year’s Eve at the Citadel on December 31, 2025 with a free, family-friendly celebration featuring festive activities and a cozy spot to view the downtown fireworks. And don’t miss our 60 th Anniversary Concert this February in a joyful tribute to six decades of theatre magic, community, and creativity.

Experience the wonder, laughter, and togetherness of the season, right here at your Citadel Theatre.

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS

THANK YOU! WE EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to all our donors, whose generosity plays a crucial role in ensuring our community has the opportunity to experience performing arts. Our donors have a profound and lasting impact on the quality, accessibility, and relevance of the Citadel’s productions, facility, and educational offerings.
