WELCOME TO THE CITADEL

Welcome to Legally Blonde!

We are thrilled to bring you this dazzling production as part of our 60th Anniversary Season. Musicals have always held a special place in the Citadel’s heart, and Legally Blonde is no exception. This vibrant, empowering show reminds us of the importance of staying true to who we are and using our voices with confidence and pride.

This production also marks a joyful reunion with our friends at Theatre Calgary. We are proud to continue building strong Alberta-based partnerships that support artists and bring exceptional theatre to audiences across the province. Co-productions like this one help us share resources, talent, and vision, and they showcase what is possible when we come together.

Elle Woods may have arrived at Harvard with a sparkle in her eye and a Chihuahua in her bag, but she leaves us all with a powerful message: never underestimate the power of authenticity, determination, and a well-timed bend and snap.

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate 60 years of bold, heartfelt storytelling in 2025/26. Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, we are so glad you’re here.

Enjoy the show!

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatoriesCree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney and Cree-Iroquois - as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupy this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

AMANDA BROWN - from the novel Legally Blonde “ “
True blondes, whether natural or not, could be identified by their inner light of buoyant, charmed, confidence.

It has been almost 25 years since Elle Woods appeared on movie screens for the first time and introduced us to her pink positive effervescent world. Why has this story become such a cultural phenomenon?

There is something about Elle Woods we identify with. Most of us have been underestimated at some point in our lives and we celebrate that Elle doesn’t need to fundamentally change who she is to succeed. We all deserve to exist in the world unapologetically as ourselves. So many of us wish we could or strive to do that every day without fear of judgement.

And the film is often credited as having one of the biggest effects on women deciding to go to law school, known as ‘The Legally Blonde Effect’. The Harvard Law School student make-up has shifted over the years and finally achieved gender parity in 2017, but Elle has also inspired women to embrace their femininity in traditionally male dominated professions. She remains an emblem for challenging stereotypes and female empowerment in the face of misogyny.

Because Elle continues to be a role model in 2025, it seemed only natural to place our production in the time we are living in now. This musical has always been one of my favourites with its big heart, catchy songs and fabulous dance arrangements. Elle reminds me to always lead with kindness, and it is a dream come true to get to live in her orbit for a while.

The world is so very dark, complicated, and overwhelming at the moment. Legally Blonde will hopefully allow you to escape for a couple of hours and inspire you to use your gifts to help others, defy expectations and remind you to stay true to yourself.

Thank you to our incredible cast, my fellow creatives, stage management team and everyone at Theatre Calgary and the Citadel Theatre who have worked so hard to bring the show to audiences in Alberta. Special thanks to my Assistant Director, Monice Peter, Assistant Choreographer, Alysse Ernewein, and dance captain, Greg Pember.

Thank you for supporting live theatre. Enjoy!

BASED ON THE NOVEL BY Yann Martel

ADAPTED BY

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ROYAL MANITOBA THEATRE CENTRE

Life of Pi brings Yann Martel’s acclaimed novel to life in a visually stunning and emotionally captivating theatrical experience. The story follows Pi Patel, a young Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and is left stranded on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with only a Royal Bengal tiger named Richard Parker for company. As Pi struggles to survive in the vast, unforgiving ocean, he confronts the limits of his faith, his resilience, and his understanding of the world.

The stage adaptation immerses audiences in Pi’s extraordinary journey, blending breathtaking visuals, puppetry, and immersive storytelling to bring the ocean, the tiger, and Pi’s incredible survival to vivid life. As Pi recounts his tale to skeptical officials, the play explores themes of faith, identity, and the power of storytelling, leaving audiences to question the nature of truth and belief.
