WELCOME TO THE CITADEL

We’re thrilled to have you here for our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The ‘70s Musical!

In 2016, Daryl directed a production of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost at Bard on the Beach in Vancouver. Daryl reimagined it as a 1920s jazz musical, cutting half the text and adding more than 20 songs. It was such a hit that Christopher Gaze, Artistic Director of Bard on the Beach, invited Daryl to re-imagine As You Like It with Beatles music. Daryl’s Beatlesinfused musical became the best-selling production in the 30-year history of Bard and went on to play across North America in Chicago, Washington DC, Milwaukee, Winnipeg, Calgary, London (Ontario), Vancouver (again!) and here at the Citadel.

The process of adapting Shakespeare into a musical was so fun, and the productions such hits with audiences, Daryl decided to dive in again, this time with Shakespeare’s most famous comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The magic and fantasy of Dream, inspired Daryl to listen to the music of the 1970s. It quite quickly became easy to see Puck inspired by Ziggy Stardust, or Oberon as a Led Zeppelin-esque rocker. And disco! There had to be disco! The music of the ‘70s fit the story perfectly.

Music intertwines with Shakespeare’s language beautifully. Songs are able to replace monologues or scenes and still serve the same narrative purpose, advancing the character’s journey and dramatic action. Daryl partnered with Kayvon Koshkham to create this adaptation (Citadel audiences will remember Kayvon’s hilarious performance as Touchstone in As You Like It). We’re thrilled with the musical and magical world we have created and hope you have a fantastic time on this groovy trip back to the 1970s! Thanks so much for joining us. Enjoy the show!

PS – We have announced our fantastic 2025/26 season, which includes: Life of Pi, The Wizard of Oz and the world premiere of Vinyl Cafe: The Musical! We hope you’ll join us for all of the great shows planned next season!

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatoriesCree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois - as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupy this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.

STUDENTS CLUB

Young people are integral to the artistic fabric of the Citadel Theatre, and we are committed to providing programs and initiatives that champion the development of their artistic identities. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our mainstage shows, students participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew.

William Shakespeare’s richly comedic characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream have inspired centuries of boisterous laughs from audience members. Amidst the complex language and expansive imagery, how do actors make the action of the story clear to contemporary audiences? Before seeing Midsummer, Students Club participants were treated to an in-depth exploration of the words of William Shakespeare with Neil Bye-Kuefler.

Neil is a passionate educator at Victoria School of the Arts in Edmonton, fostering the next generation of learners. He is dedicated to his family, cherishing his roles as partner and parent. A lifelong learner, Neil thrives on collaboration and embraces the joy of imaginative play, whether on stage or in everyday life. His contributions to the Edmonton theatre scene, including his co-founding of Thou Art Here Theatre, have brought him a great source of inspiration and he hopes that, in some small way, he has brightened the landscape of our fine city. “Trust your guts.”

JOE’S DREAM built the Citadel Theatre

HENRY HOLE, 1884-1954

JOE’S SPIRIT continues to inspire the theatre we create today

JOE’S LEGACY lives on through a generous gift to the Citadel from his estate

On the Citadel’s 30th Anniversary, a gift was made by the Company of Harry Hole, James F. Hole, Ralph K. Hole and Robert W. Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole. The Citadel Theatre is proud to honour Henry Hole’s integrity, compassion and leadership in the dedication of this complex to his memory.
