WELCOME TO THE CITADEL
Welcome to Life of Pi!
We are delighted to welcome you to this captivating production as part of our 60th Anniversary Season. It is a milestone year for the Citadel Theatre and what better way to celebrate six decades of storytelling than with this extraordinary and imaginative journey.
Life of Pi is especially significant as it marks its first regional production, and we are thrilled to partner with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre to bring this stunning adaptation to life. Collaborations like this enrich our theatre community by sharing creative vision, resources, and passion, allowing us to present powerful stories that resonate far beyond our stage.
As we honour 60 years of bold, innovative theatre, we thank you for being part of our story. Whether this is your first visit or one of many, your presence makes this celebration all the more meaningful.
We are especially grateful to those who have been subscribers, or who have carried on their family’s subscription tradition since our early days, and who remain an integral part of the Citadel.
Thank you! Enjoy the adventure!
Daryl Cloran
Jessie van Rijn Artistic Director Executive Director
At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you.
We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan – Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands.
Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. We commit to this work through the sharing of resources, ongoing training, the inclusion of Indigenous stories, histories, and experiences in our programming, and by fostering meaningful relationships with the community.
In the spirit of reciprocity and respect, we seek to uphold the original intent of the Treaty and strive to create a shared narrative that honors our responsibility to this land and to each other.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Life of Pi is a story of survival, belief, and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. At its heart, it is a fable about storytelling itself. How we shape narratives to make sense of the incomprehensible, and how imagination can become both a tool for endurance and a vessel for truth. What I am most excited about this piece is its rich theatricality. It dares to ask impossible questions and uses bold, visual poetry to answer them. How do you stage the vastness of the Pacific Ocean? A Bengal tiger? A soul in crisis? That is exactly what theatre is made for. To transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through collaboration, design, performance, and belief.
Directing this production has been a great privilege. The artistry, ingenuity, and heart that every member of this creative team, cast, and crew has brought to the process is nothing short of inspiring. Together, we have aimed to honour the depth of Yann Martel’s novel and the powerful theatrical adaptation by Lolita Chakrabarti while creating something uniquely our own.
A sincere thank you to Daryl Cloran and everyone at The Citadel for the opportunity to bring this remarkable story to life with you.

STUDENTS CLUB
Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing shows – Students Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton.
Before select mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew – diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life.
With stunning visuals and breath-taking story-telling, the puppeteers of Life of Pi bring characters alive. Students will learn from puppeteer, puppet builder, mask maker, and stilt-walker Randall Fraser about the ingenuity involved in the creation and building of puppets as well as the skills behind what it takes to perform as a puppeteer!
Randall is the founding Artistic Director of the National Stiltwalkers of Canada and is celebrating 21 years of promoting preserving and presenting the art of stiltwalking. Randall’s history in theatre and special event creation is long and varied. From his origins as a young actor, Randall has become a Designer, Director, Producer, and Performer for many major festivals and events locally, nationally, and internationally. If it’s fantastic and spectacular, Randall is probably nearby.

As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, we are proud to present a special feature in each program highlighting the rich history, unforgettable moments, and remarkable people who have shaped The Citadel Theatre.
IT BEGAN WITH AN IDEA
Edmonton’s rich history is filled with stories of passionate individuals coming together to build, create and imagine. The Citadel Theatre’s origin story is no exception. It began with a simple phone call from a real estate agent to Joseph H. Shoctor, a prominent local businessman with a deep love for theatre. The one phone call provided him with the opportunity to purchase the former Salvation Army Citadel building on 102 Street, now the Starlite Room, which had previously served as both a church and administrative office.
WHAT’S IN A NAME
Known as “The Citadel,” the building was in serious need of repairs, but Shoctor was thrilled to find a sloped floor, seating and an area that could serve as a stage, features that added to the allure of creating a new live theatre space in Edmonton. His intention was to make The Citadel “the theatre centre of this country.” Shoctor, along with friends James L. Martin, Ralph B. MacMillan and Sandy Mactaggart, purchased the original location of what would become The Citadel Theatre for $100,000. The theatre opened on November 10, 1965, with a production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
FOR THE LOVE
OF EDMONTON
Our founding families contributed to a legacy here in Edmonton, and we are grateful for their efforts. We also deeply appreciate all those who have supported the Citadel through six decades of magnificent theatre. Your contributions help ensure that future generations can enjoy live theatre for years to come.
CELEBRATE!
This Autumn, we’re marking our 60th Anniversary season with special events that bring our community together, supported by the City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund.

DID YOU KNOW? YOU CAN RENT THE VENUES AT THE CITADEL THEATRE!
SHOCTOR THEATRE
This elegant proscenium theatre, complete with red velour seating and redwood panelling, is ideal for many types of performances and presentations.
THE RICE
A black box theatre with a balcony, The Rice is the Citadel’s smallest fully-equipped stage. The Rice’s intimate setting and private lobby are great for a variety of events.
ZEIDLER HALL
Originally built as a movie theatre, Zeidler Hall has adapted to serve the needs of the Edmonton area. Its sloped walkways make the seating area completely accessible.
MACLAB THEATRE
Located in the tropical Lee Pavilion, at the base of our spectacular Light Wall, the theatre has a thrust stage, with 13 rows of seats set in a “U” around the stage.
TUCKER AMPHITHEATRE
Nestled on the uppermost level of our tropical atrium, this space is famous for its lush greenery, winding paths, wooden bleacherstyle seating, and raised stage area.
MEETING SPACES
We offer a variety of meeting spaces with different capacities and set-ups, including the Citadel Boardroom, classrooms and the David D. Bentley Salon.
