Canoe Lake man backs Idle No More with hunger strike taken from PaNow One man in Canoe Lake is saying ‘stop’ to the impending nuclear dumping and passing of Bill C-45, which many say loosens environment protections across the country.

Emil Bell has been on a hunger strike for eight days protesting some of Harper government's policies that are having a negative effect on many people’s land and community.

Adopted daughter of Bell, Donna Larat who resides in Prince Albert, said this isn’t the first time he has gone on a hunger strike to protest conservative policies.

“I talked to him (Sunday night) and he sounded pretty weak already because he’s 72 years old. He did this last year and went for 17 days and it was my niece who begged him to stop because really no one was paying attention then at all,” Larat said.

“He actually sat me and my husband down last Tuesday actually, a week ago because I wasn’t really happy with the last one, mainly because nobody was listening. It frustrated me because nobody was listening and he really means this; he’s not messing round. He seriously plans doing it until the death.”

Since his previous hunger strike Larat said he has found groups that share his feelings including the international social media movement against Omnibus Bill C-45, Idle No More, as well as Attawapiskat Chief

Theresa Spence who has been on a hunger strike since Dec. 11 in support of the grassroots effort to help achieve change.

“He’s really proud of these women and he’s just all for them and it’s also in support of what Theresa is doing,” Larat said.

“I know elders for many years have been saying it’s going to be the women who are going to take it and will succeed at bringing the change. They will bring the change on and you can see it already because both aboriginal and non-aboriginal are saying ‘ya enough because this is our country.’”

She said there’s no talking him out of the hunger strike, explaining Bell is from a generation where this is how they got things done.

“He wants more action. He wants more support for the women that are organizing these walks and these rallies. He wants it stopped. He wants the nuclear waste stopped from coming forward. It’s more than just one thing,” Larat continued.

The Idle No More group, which was started by four women from Saskatchewan, has been holding rallies against Bill C-45 that have spread to Prince Albert and internationally.

HIGHWAY HOTLINE HELPING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MOTORISTS Highway Hotline Activity Spikes in November Severe weather during the month of November resulted in a large number of calls to the Highway Hotline.

"Snow and freezing rain led to some adverse driving conditions during the past month, resulting in increased activity for the Highway Hotline," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said. "With a growing province, more drivers are using a variety of methods offered by the Highway Hotline to make informed decisions before hitting the road."

The total number of inquiries to the Highway Hotline increased more than 200 per cent to 659,601 last month from 214,144 the previous November. This year's numbers include 112,317 phone calls and 547,284 web visits to the hotline.

The information for the Highway Hotline is compiled from observations made by Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure staff.

Information provided on the 24 hours a day service may be subject to rapidly changing weather, flooding, forest fires or other events.

Motorists need to be alert to these possible changes and operate their vehicles in a safe and responsible manner based on the road conditions before them.

The Highway Hotline Twitter account recorded an increase in its followers to about 4,600 from about 3,700 from the start to the end of November 2012, which is a 24 per cent increase. The Highway Hotline Facebook page, for the same time period, recorded an increase in likes to 4,112 from 3,200, or an increase of about 28 per cent.

North Sask Victim Services (NSVS) Inc. Regional Supervisor North Sask Victim Service (NSVS) is a new non-profit organization created to strengthen and coordinate the deliver of police based victim services in northern Saskatchewan.

NSVS is seeking to fill the position of Regional Supervisor. The Regional Supervisor, located in La Ronge, will be responsible for supervising Coordinators located in a variety of northern locations thr oughout the Norther n Administration District (NAD).

This position reports to the Executive Director. In the absence of the Executive D ir ect or , t h e R eg i o n a l Sup er vis or will a ssu m e r esponsibilit y for t he management of the organization.

Key responsibilities include:  Recruiting, supporting and supervising Coordinators and volunteers of NSVS  Assisting with and coordinating services to victims  Administrative duties as required inclu ding implementing p olicy, submitting reports, and collecting data  Providing str ong leadership to Coordinators and volunteers while handling problems and resolving conflict  Helping build a strong, mutually supportive team  Educating and increasing awareness of the services of the organization. The

successful candidate will have proven communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Experience in the nonprofit sector is an asset.

In addition the individual should possess:  Degree in the Human Services field or an equivalent combination of education and experience  Knowledge of northern and Aboriginal Cultures, identity, languages and organizations  Excellent computer skills including data base management, desk top publishing, etc.  Knowledge of victimization and trauma  Experience working with victims and marginalized people  Supervisory experience with knowledge of Human Resources  Ability to travel on gravel roads at short notice throughout the NAD while working field hours  Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP security clearance and work in a police environment Interested individuals can submit their applications (including cover letter, resume and names of three work related references)
