SENIORS RIDE FOR JUST $10 IN SEPTEMBER The Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) will once again offer seniors the opportunity to explore Saskatchewan at a great price. Throughout the month of September, seniors 60+ will be able to ride anywhere along STC’s network for only $10 one-way.

“September is a great time of year to get out and explore our province. Whether it is to visit friends and family, or for appointments, seniors can take advantage of this great offer to travel Saskatchewan,” Minister responsible for STC Don McMorris said.

Wi-Fi and other great amenities including power outlets, increased leg room, and wheel chair access, make travel by bus convenient and comfortable. In 2012, STC reported a 93 per cent customer satisfaction rating from customers that rated the company’s service as “good” or “excellent”.

“We hear great stories from our passengers after our senior seat sales,” STC President and CEO Shawn Grice said. “Some will try to ride every route we offer, while others will use it to schedule necessary appointments or do some shopping in major centres.

The most rewarding stories are about STC connecting friends and family from across Saskatchewan.”

In 2012, more than 30,000 seniors took advantage of seat sale months. STC has offered similar promotions since 2009.

North West Communities Wood Products Ltd. Junior Resources Rangers Program Submitted by Jamie Laliberte

The North West Communities Wood Products Ltd (NWC), recently hosted the Junior Resources Rangers program which is designed to teach aboriginal students some of the basic tools needed for a career in forestry, mining, and encourages students to pursue postsecondary schooling. The program began in 2006 with the support the Sturgeon Lake First Nations’, since its’ eight seasons, the program as now had close to 500 graduates from many of the southern reserves to the northern Métis communities.

The Saskatchewan Resource Ranger program is a summer work experience program in a six -week period. The program gives youth an opportunity to earn certificates and to gain knowledge in the field of natural resources.

Six of the main topic areas are: forestry, fire management, environment, health and safety, mining, and cultural awareness including Traditional Ecological Knowledge. The objectives of the program are to: encourage youth to remain in high school or pursue postsecondary schooling to complete or advance their education by promoting confidence, culture, and leadership skills, support and encourage youth to establish a career in the field of natural resources, provide participants with the opportunity to learn and respect our environment, work together with the community to engage participants, parents, and elders to build a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable future, and to develop successful partnerships between Aboriginal people, Government, and Industry.

The Prince Albert Model Forest coordinates

the program with the team support of representatives from the Prince Albert Grand Council, Canadian Forest Service, SIAST Woodland campus: Department of Natural Resources and Saskatchewan Environment: Fire Management and Forest Protection (FNFP) branch. Each organization is committed to helping youth build brighter futures.

NWC made the decision to host the program in the summer of 2013. The initial intent was to select two participants from each of the seven communities that comprise the NWC, due to low number of applicants, only 12 youth began the program, five males and seven females.

They were from La Loche, Turnor Lake, Buffalo Narrows, Ile a la Crosse, Beauval, and Pinehouse.

The Amyot Inn, near Beauval, was leased exclusively for the duration of the program.

The crew members stayed there for the week and had the weekends off. Instructors were able to stay overnight if needed. The crew had supervision the whole time with evening activities to keep them occupied. The crew had a cook who feed them well, and a 15 passenger van was rented for transportation.

Aside from the training programs, which the crew members got certificates in First-Aid/ CPR, chainsaw course, boat operators course, firearm safety, GPS training, new workers and workplace training, and wilderness survival, the crew was also exposed to presentations from the: RCMP, Conservation Officers,
