On July 31, Culex tarsalis mosquitoes – which carry West Nile – caught in the city tested positive for the virus.

Experts said colder temperatures in August and September should result in a decrease in all mosquitos.

However, the City of Saskatoon and the Saskatoon Health Region are still warning people to cover up during dusk and dawn to avoid being bitten.

The health region also recommends use insect repellant that contains DEET. Every week, the city sends samples to the Ministry of Health to test for West Nile. This is the first time in 2013 that positive tests were found in Saskatoon.

SASKATCHEWAN PATIENTS ARE RECEIVING SURGERIES FASTER The Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative and surgical teams across the province have continued their effort to improve outcomes for patients by providing surgeries sooner.

The latest provincial wait times numbers show that 79 per cent of patients are having their surgery within three months of their referral from a surgeon and 91 per cent within six months.

“I am very pleased to see our health system is steadily moving toward the ambitious target of offering surgeries to all patients within three months by April 2014,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. “We still have a lot of work ahead but we are committed to shorter wait times and improved quality of life for patients.”

MORE FULL TIME JOBS OFFERED ON SASKJOBS.CA IN JULY

The employment market in the province continues to grow based on the number of jobs available on SaskJobs.ca, which were reported today.

Saskatchewan employers are offering more full time jobs, accounting for more than 60 per cent of July 2013 postings on SaskJobs.ca, marking a 14.7 per cent increase over July 2012. The number of jobs also went up to 17,249 in July 2013 - an increase of 8.6 per cent when compared to July 2012.

“Our strong economy continues to inspire confidence in our employers who are actively investing and creating valuable jobs for our people,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “Sectors such as the arts, recreation and sport have witnessed strong gains in the last year while employers in trades, transport, construction, sales and services continued their steady job creation.”

SENIORS RIDE FOR JUST $10 IN SEPTEMBER The Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) will once again offer seniors the opportunity to explore Saskatchewan at a great price. Throughout the month of September, seniors 60+ will be able to ride anywhere along STC’s network for only $10 one-way.

“September is a great time of year to get out and explore our province. Whether it is to visit friends and family, or for appointments, seniors can take advantage of this great offer to travel Saskatchewan,” Minister responsible for STC Don McMorris said.

Wi-Fi and other great amenities including power outlets, increased leg room, and wheel chair access, make travel by bus convenient and comfortable. In 2012, STC reported a 93

per cent customer satisfaction rating from customers that rated the company’s service as “good” or “excellent”.

“We hear great stories from our passengers after our senior seat sales,” STC President and CEO Shawn Grice said. “Some will try to ride every route we offer, while others will use it to schedule necessary appointments or do some shopping in major centres. The most rewarding stories are about STC connecting friends and family from across Saskatchewan.”

In 2012, more than 30,000 seniors took advantage of seat sale months. STC has offered similar promotions since 2009.

Work Zones CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT TO DO IN THE WORK ZONE & WHEN YOU HAVE TO SLOW DOWN? When a driver first encounters the highway work zone, they will see an orange sign with a black image of a worker on it and a tab that identifies “Workers Present”. This will be followed by a black and white speed sign of 60 km.
