Most of our censure of others is only oblique praise of self, uttered to show the wisdom and superiority of the speaker. It has all the insidiousness of self-praise, and all the ill-desert of falsehood. ~Tyron Edwards Or as my mother always told me growing up [when other kids teased me], "What people say is wrong with you is most likely what's wrong with themselves."

I used to do this in my younger years. I would criticize those who disagreed with me to show how much better I was. Upon further reflection -- I had that same negative trait that I had criticized them for having. It's interesting how the human psyche works.

Insults are really nothing more than a coping mechanism people use to protect themselves from the things they fear are true, don't want to believe, or simply don't believe. It's how they keep themselves safe from themselves because the most frightening thing of all is to look into the mirror with eyes wide open and see into the self.

The self is not always a pretty place. It is laden with envy, greed, anger, self-righteousness, conceit, and a myriad of other "flaws" we would all like to think we have never possessed. I am no different. I've been greedy, rude, self-righteous, angry, vindictive, selfish etc... at various times in my life or within certain situations. We all have. It's called being human.

Perfection is possessed by no man or woman. We all have choices to allow what we deem negative traits to rule us because we are all blessed with free will.

Basically - each person can *try* to not allow these behaviors to become a permanent part of our personality. That doesn't necessarily mean we'll succeed.

So when we judge others perhaps we should step back for a moment and judge our judging. Are we being fair?

Or are we acting on a double standard? After all, you cannot condemn a man for drinking from the well that you drink from every morning.

Building a Better Future: one nail at a time Could you imagine a class of high achievers, each one trying to perform at an A level or higher? Could you imagine students helping each other maintain a high safety standard by working together? Could you imagine students who constantly revise their work until it is perfect? Could you imagine students who argue with each other about wanting to stay after school, or come to do extra work on their spare time? Would you believe this is happening with students who were serious underachievers last year? Yes it is all true, and it is happening in Beauval’s Carpentry and Construction class where students are building a house for Sask.

Housing.

The high school program, which was first started in La Loche 3 years ago, is now a Northern Lights School Division 113 showcase of what students can achieve given the right conditions. Those conditions include a partnership with Sask. Housing personnel, who supply the materials, and NLSD-113, who supply a teacher/site supervisor and carpenter / mentor. “The biggest problem I have is picking who is going to work overtime” stated Morris Brizinski, a long time teacher at Valley View School. Mr. B. went on to say “In 30 years of teaching, this was the greatest teaching experience I have ever been involved in. “ Louis Wolverine, a Master Carpenter, stated, “These students are incredible, we were a month behind because of late start, and now these students are now right on schedule. I just have to show them once how to do something, and they try their best to get it perfect.” Louis went on, “I wish I had their attitude and energy with some of the professionals that I had to work with in the past.”

Philip Alcrow stated, “I can’t wait for the plumbers to start work, so I can help them out. That’s something I would like to do in the future.” “I have 16 students working in two shifts - 2 hours in length,” Mr. Brizinski acknowledged. He added, “They will get two PAA high school credits, but more importantly than that, they will know what’s it like to be a professional. They will be always be able to walk by that house and say, “ I built that house.” The house has to be completed by Jan. 30th, when the semester ends.
