PRESCRIPTION FOR EXCELLENCE With Dr. James J. Williams

Weathering COVID-19 Outbreak: Skill Up Your Speaking Skills In recent months, our country witnessed citizens forced to work from home. Imagine that? One could argue that this is the ultimate dream job – working from home – with pay! In many cases, not so much. There are also people that are in a more unfortunate situation where they actually can’t work at all right now. These folks stay at home in some cases while not earning a paycheck. I personally have family members facing this crisis. My brother among them! Laid off with no additional income, like so many others, he too lost the battle against his company’s bottom line due to a pandemic. For better, for worse, this sudden shift is a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. For those who are in this place of uncertainty due to this whole COVID-19 outbreak, you have my deepest sympathy. I know exactly what you’re going through. While, I’m fortunate enough to work remotely – it’s certainly no picnic. My days include managing my teenage son’s school projects as he spends time in an online learning environment. He utilizes his remaining time decompressing by playing video games with his friends – who are also housebound. Can I tell you - I’m good with that? My wife, who is considered “essential personnel” leaves the house most days and teleworks other days. Though she’s not in the medical field, rather the financial space for a non-profit, it has been hectic for her as well. It’s an interesting transition in our household for sure, so I do fully understand the situation that many of you are experiencing. Just know this - we’re in this together! There’s a lot of people stuck at home right now again whether they’re working or they’re not working. An unfortunate trend that has already started to happen is that you’re seeing headlines of how streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney Plus are having biggest days and weeks ever. They’re even having to in some cases lower the quality of their videos and movies that they have on their platforms in order to make sure that the speed can still keep up with everyone who is on the platforms. Unfortunately and as tempting as that might be to just use this time as a vacation and binge watch your next Netflix series, I do think it is an important time to actually use this as an opportunity to advance your skills and advance your knowledge because of what’s coming down the road - so I urge you to read further and apply the tips that I will share with you.

10

That’s really the purpose of this article – to prepare you and invite you to conduct a selfinventory of your skillsets. During this time, while folks are rightfully focused on the health aspect of what’s going on with COVID-19, they may not be thinking about what will likely happen following the recovery period of this outbreak in terms of skillsets for continued/increased income. The unfortunate thing is that this is going to have some deep underlying economic impacts because obviously businesses are shut down and they’re making a lot less revenue than they typically would. The world economy, as we know it, has already been negatively impacted. The ongoing coronavirus crisis has confined many of us to our homes and has created a lot of uncertainty in our lives. But there is one thing I know for sure--it will eventually pass and you’ll be right back out there building your career, pitching your idea, or starting a business. Take this opportunity now to build a fundamental skill that you’ll need to stand out in the workplace--public speaking. Why public speaking? Because Warren Buffett says it’s the one skill you can build today that will increase your value by 50 percent, and you can do it from home. Keynote Speaker, author, and Inc.com columnist, Carmine Gallo prescribes 4 steps to skill-up your speaking craft while at home: 1. Watch one TED Talk a day. Set aside 18 minutes a day to watch a TED Talk. With tens of thousands of TED and TEDx talks delivered over the years, the TED.com website is your source for education. While most people watch TED talks for the content, I’m suggesting you also watch for presentation style. After all, many TED speakers--especially the speakers at the annual TED Conference in Vancouver--work with coaches. You can see the result of that preparation. One thing to look for is what TED calls the “through-line.” When a speaker first comes to a TED coach, they’re often rambling and there’s no clear connection among the examples or statistics in their presentations. They are taught to find a through-line, or the main point of the presentation. Focus on one idea and connect the examples, stories, and statistics to it.

11

continued on page 13

continued from page 11

You can spot the through-line easily in some of these popular talks: • “How to Stay Calm When You Know You’ll Be Stressed” (Daniel Levitin) • “The Surprising Habits of Original Thinkers” (Adam Grant) • “The Next Outbreak? We’re Not Ready” (Bill Gates’s 2015 prescient talk about virus outbreaks) • “The Power of Vulnerability” (Brené Brown) 2. Record yourself. Set aside time to go into a quiet room, set up your smartphone (it’s also worth investing in a small tabletop tripod for this exercise), and hit record. Now give your presentation. Watch the video. You’ll spot a number of distracting habits that you’re simply not aware you have. Eliminate habits such as: • Touching your face • Fiddling with your hair • Reading from your notes or slides • Using too many filler words such as “uh,” “um,” and “ah” Very few people record themselves practicing a presentation. You’ll stand out by using this tip. 3. Practice in front of family and pets. Many people suffer from various levels of nerves. You’re not alone. We’re hardwired to feel anxious when we’re speaking in front of people. Here’s the good news: Stage fright can be managed. But it takes practice. Start with small steps by speaking in front of people you’re comfortable with. 4. Read books on communication skills. While I’ve written 2 books on success and have taught college-level courses on leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication, there are many great books from other authors that I’m placing in my permanent library. Some of my recommended favorites include: • DataStory by Nancy Duarte. In this new book, presentation design specialist Nancy Duarte explains in visual form how to turn data into impactful stories. • If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face? by Alan Alda. Many people don’t know that the actor Alan Alda founded a center for the communication of science at Stony Brook University. He’s a remarkable storyteller who understands the value of simple, clear, and impactful public speaking. • This Is Marketing by Seth Godin. Although “marketing” is in the title, it’s a book about effective communication. In Godin’s definition, marketing is the act of making change happen--like changing someone’s mind. And you can’t change minds without sharpening your communication skills. 13

How Webinars Helped Me Generate $15k in 21 Days Can webinars help you generate real revenue? Yes, they can! I was able to generate $15,000 in 21 days by doing webinars. For many people, this sounds like an impossible goal to achieve. As a systems expert and successful webinar host, I’ve been using webinars to help promote our business for the past 4 and a half years. I’ve spent countless hours teaching clients how to use webinars for their businesses. We have pulled out the whiteboard and walked step-by-step, providing a blueprint that our clients use to display their message using the webinar platform. They are one of the most powerful ways of connecting with current and potential clients and they help you, as the expert, develop authority and trust with your audience. In addition to developing strong business relationships, you can generate lots of revenue from Webinars, when done correctly. The key is, you’ll have to put the work in. As DeKesha Williams, your Virtual COO, let me show you how you can be successful with webinar marketing

Generating $15k in 21 days? Yes, it’s possible! At first glance, it may sound like a challenge to generate 15k in less than a month just by using webinars, but let me tell you how it can be done. In our business, I used to spend over 3 hours teaching clients how to maximize on webinar hosting. Most clients would pay $10,000-$20,000 a month and I would teach them how to use highrise. I’d follow a step-by-step approach, where I would use a whiteboard to break down all the fundamental elements of a webinar. Think webinar registration page, thank you page, sales page, etc. I would teach clients how to set all these elements up- and how to begin attracting people to their webinar sessions. I would also teach my clients how to set up their tech sequence, including email, social media, and other marketing techniques that would pull subscribers to sign up for an upcoming webinar.

continued from page 15 The Challenge

If I told you to attract 30 people to a webinar every week, would you be able to do it? To some, it sounds simple; yet to others, it’s a daunting task. What if I told you to attract 100 subscribers? Things usually start getting more complicated at that point. However, it can still be done and you can join clients of mine who say they are able to do this with only a two-week window from WSB!

8 Webinars in 30 days

My colleague and I were challenged to do 8 webinars in 30 days. Within 21 days, I was able to close $15,000 in commission, at a 20% rate. These results made me take a step back and ask myself how I was able to make this happen. I made $15,000 in commission. What if I was selling my own program? What if you were selling your own program? Wouldn’t it be nice to generate revenue selling your program via webinars? What’s the secret to achieving this goal?

It’s All About Execution

After reflecting on my process and the results I was able to achieve, I realized why my clients weren’t winning. It’s not that they didn’t know what to do, it’s that they weren’t putting that knowledge to work. It is not a knowledge problem! It’s an execution problem! You may know what you need to do, but are you doing it? As your virtual COO, I teach what I believe in! I knew that everything I was teaching had the potential of helping my clients generate $100,000 in their business, so I decided to try out my training for myself. I needed to see if I could achieve the results that I expected from my clients. Guess what? It’s all about putting in the work. Many of us have been there, purchasing course after course and eventually deciding that it doesn’t work for you (I’ve been guilty of this). However, the question remains. Did you put in the work? You may know exactly what to do, but you have to do it. 16

The Blueprint Works If You Do The Work

When talking to potential clients, I’m asked a common question, “Does the blueprint work?” People tend to focus on the theoretical aspects rather than the practical ones. I always say that the blueprint works if you put in the work. In other words, if you implement the specific strategies, you’ll see results sooner than you may think. However, it all starts when you put in the work to make it happen. Through my own experience, I showed you guys that it’s possible to generate $15,000 in 21 days, and it was all commission-based. How did I do it? I turned on the camera and shared my message. Strategically, consistently, and passionately, I put the blueprint to work and implemented all the strategies that I share in my webinar training. Executing this strategy will bear fruit for your business if you are committed to your goal. Yes, it sounds easier than it actually is, but you do have the framework to make it happen. With each step outlined for you, you have everything you need. For me personally, we’ve earned nearly $80,000 in 9 months on just one of our programs. Believe me, just one program can change your life if you let it. It’s possible to generate thousands of dollars by selling your own program via webinars. Just stick to the blueprint and execute.

Why Webinars are Effective at Getting Your Message Across

You may be wondering why I love webinars. As the queen of webinar hosting, my experience has shown that webinars are one of the most effective channels for spreading your message. Regardless of what you do or how your business is set up, it’s hard to go wrong with webinars. Hosting one will help you spread your message in the following ways: 1. Build trustworthy relationships with your clients For you to generate any real revenue, your clients have to know who they’re doing business with. Remember that people do business with people, not with companies. Brief online commercials, or even getting traffic to your website, may not be quite enough to close sales. Webinars fill in this gap by creating a personal connection with clients. They’ll get to know you in person, develop a relationship, and gain trust in your message. 2. Establish yourself as an authority within your field Customers like seeing the face behind the product they’re purchasing. Also, hosting a webinar allows you to showcase your expertise, abilities, and knowledge of the industry. It also introduces a human element that people can connect to. And when your clients view you as an authority within your field, you’ll have an easier time generating revenue from trusted recipients of your message. 17

continued from page 17

3. Have a better understanding of your clients As your virtual COO, I teach that understanding who (what type of customer) you’re going after is the best approach to generating revenue. Do you know your target audience? What are their needs and preferences? What problem do they have that you’re trying to solve? A webinar is, also, a critical step towards knowing your clients, what they like, what they don’t like, and so much more. Raise Awareness of Your Brand Of course, a webinar wouldn’t be useful if it didn’t make people more familiar with your business. You can elevate the awareness of your brand without spending tons of cash on costly advertising or other business promotion techniques. Tips for Hosting a Successful Webinar I am a webinar lover. We were able to create $15k in just 21 days of hosting them, but hosting a successful webinar requires a careful strategy, the blueprint. I spend 3-4 hours per session walking my clients through the essentials (and details) of hosting a successful webinar. The step-by-step process is detailed, but here’s a little sneak peek of what I teach, and what it takes to host a successful webinar: • Use the right hosting platform • Timing is everything (choose a day and time that works for your clients) • Get your equipment right (camera, microphone, lighting, etc.). Experiment with the setup in advance • Promote your webinar well in advance and get your audience ready (using email chains, social media, landing pages, etc.). • Choose an engaging topic that will draw in your audience Finally, Do The Work! With the webinar blueprint in place, it’s up to you to execute. Generating lots of revenue through webinars is absolutely possible, you just need to commit yourself to make it happen. Be ready to do the work. And finally, be passionate, purposeful, and most importantly, be profitable. © 2018 by DeKesha C. Williams. All Rights Reserved. DeKesha C.
