As the state’s oldest nonprofit human services organization, founded in 1893, just four years after South Dakota became a state, Children’s Home Society (CHS) evolves to meet the changing needs of the people we serve. Today:

The Gift for Good Campaign for Children’s Inn reaching two-thirds of its goal months ahead of schedule, thanks to the efforts of more than 50 volunteers and the extraordinary generosity of our supporters, who faced personal and business challenges of their own during the pandemic.

The phrase choose kindness resurfaced during the pandemic, reminding us all that a momentary choice can diffuse difficult situations and offer a healing balm. At Children’s Home Society, we know that a deliberate decision to choose kindness can turn a simple act into a powerful wave that can create a legacy beyond imagination. Our founders William and Elizabeth Sherrard chose kindness in 1893, and here we are–board members, staff, volunteers and donors— approaching 130 years of making lasting impacts for children and families. Residential Treatment and Day School Black Hills Children’s Home (BHCH) and Sioux Falls Children’s Home (SFCH) are psychiatric residential treatment facilities and special education schools for children, ages 4-14. We partner with parents and caregivers to serve children with emotional, behavioral or mental health needs who may have experienced domestic violence, neglect, and emotional, physical or sexual abuse.

WHEN LOVE ISN’T ENOUGH Tika was just seven weeks old when she first met Tracy, Caleb and Millie Hinkkanen. The family was providing foster care; Tika and her siblings were their first placement.

“She was in and out of our care—had eight or nine different placements and every kind of trauma imaginable,” says Tracy.

“She was three when we got her back for good.”

The Hinkkanens had always wanted to adopt Tika. But their counselor cautioned the family. “Due to Tika’s extreme trauma, the counselor was concerned. She advised us to hold off before finalizing the adoption until we knew she could attach.”

Unmanageable behaviors Tika’s unresolved trauma did turn out to be a problem.

“She'd be the sweetest, most cuddly thing in the world and then she'd be angry and ripping down posters and throwing chairs,” says Tracy. “She could not stand when we would give our other children attention.

It always had to be about her.”

“There was no room for our son Micah, who was two. Our older daughter, who was 11 at the time, hated Tika.

She never wanted to be around her because Tika was always whining, crying, yelling and screaming. I think both of our biological kids felt like we didn't have time for them because we were constantly dealing with Tika's behavior.”

“As a mom to all three of them, I couldn't go forward with adoption because we always said we would never do anything with foster care that would be detrimental to our biological kids. And as much as we loved Tika, I realized we couldn’t ruin their childhood.”

The final straw occurred after Tracy’s parents had gotten a puppy.

Tika loved the puppy. “But my mom found her with a chair cushion over the puppy, trying to smother it.” That’s when the family began the process of getting Tika into residential treatment at Sioux Falls Children’s Home.

Insights from residential care In a Facebook post, Tracy wrote about bringing Tika to CHS. “We could not heal our little girl’s heart with love alone; she needed treatment—intense, inpatient treatment. Despite trusting those who were advising us on Tika’s need to go to CHS, it was a painful decision. So many tears were shed

leading up to and after dropping her off.”

Admission Coordinator Joan Sim helped Tracy process her conflicted feelings. “I don't know if I could have gone through with it if Joan hadn't coached me in the beginning,” says Tracy. “Just the time that she took on the phone and her compassion and understanding of what I was enduring.”

“I didn't want to visit Tika initially. Joan told me that was normal. I don't think everybody looks at it that way, but when you love this child unconditionally and they're abusing you because they've been abused, it's hard on your mom heart. Then, you have all the mom guilt. And to hear her tell me, that's okay. you're not the only parent that doesn't immediately want to come visit.

I'm just so thankful for Joan.”

In the beginning, due to COVID-19, the Hinkkanens visited Tika outside. But as the pandemic worsened, visitors were not allowed on campus. They tried video visits, but this proved difficult because of Tika’s short attention span.

Visible progress Tika’s first home visit was over Christmas. She had been in residential treatment for about six months.

“We noticed she was a lot calmer,” Tracy says. “They put her on medication for ADHD and gave her sleep

medication. Previously at night she would sit on the floor—she didn’t like to stay in the bed—and bang her head on the floor. She had done it ever since she was little, it was a self-soothing thing, one of her behaviors.”

little girl wanted to open a gift. My mom said, ‘No, it's Tika's party. We need to let Tika open the gifts.’ Then Tika said, ‘It’s okay. She can open one,’ and handed her a gift and sat back and let her open it.”

The Hinkkanens didn’t know how little she was sleeping because they needed sleep themselves. But at CHS, residential treatment counselors discovered that Tika was only getting two to three hours of sleep every night.

Tracy and her mom were dumbstruck.

“My mom said, 'Tracy, are you seeing this? Do you even recognize how much she has changed?’ Because for her to even get through a party without a meltdown would have been considered miraculous a year ago, let alone sharing the spotlight with somebody else! I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, it's really happening. She's going to be okay.’”

“After trying several, they finally found a sleep medication that worked,” says Tracy. “It was a game changer. Think how hard it would be to behave and think straight if you were only getting two to three hours of sleep for years.”

“That was huge. It felt like a family again instead of the Tika show.”

And as Tika began visiting home on a regular basis, the Hinkkanens saw more improvements.

“We had a birthday party for her in April,” says Tracy. “She’d never even had a real birthday party because she couldn't handle it.”

The party went on without incident.

“Then, we were opening gifts and this 8

Returning home Tika was discharged from Sioux Falls Children’s Home. She now attends Journey Elementary School in Harrisburg, SD. “She’s doing really well, and we haven’t had a single note from the teacher.” The family is part of the Post-Adoption Therapy program offered at CHS. The end of Tracy’s Facebook post shows how much residential treatment helped Tika. “This child is so much happier and healthier than we ever

imagined possible one year ago,” Tracy wrote.

“Does it break my heart that my love wasn’t enough to do that healing? Initially it did, but the realization that she got the help she needed and has the best possible chance of a healthy life eventually overpowered my self-doubt.”

“If she needed medical treatments to save her life, I wouldn’t be mad that I couldn’t perform those. I would just get her to a doctor ASAP. I know now all that matters is that Tika got the emotional and mental help she needed to live her best possible life,” Tracy wrote.

The happy ending to this story is that Tika’s adoption was finalized on November 5, 2021.

Child Advocacy Center The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) serves children who are alleged victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse or who have witnessed violence. Like more than 900 other CACs nationwide, the Children’s Home CAC provides forensic interviews, support to families and coordinates specialized medical examinations.

These services eliminate the need for repeated interviews and examinations by multiple investigating parties.

Referrals come primarily through law enforcement and Child Protection Services.

SHARING THE SECRET Imagine that you are a 10-year-old girl. You are being sexually abused by a family friend. It’s a secret—because the “friend” has threatened you.

You keep pushing it out of your mind. But one day, when you’re playing with one of your own friends, the secret slips out.

To your surprise, your friend tells you that the same thing happened to her a few years ago!

She says she told an adult and was interviewed at the Children’s Home Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC). Most important, the abuse stopped.

Your friend says that telling an adult is the right thing to do. She even offers to go with you to share with your mother what has been happening. It’s hard to tell your mom, but having your friend there helps. Your mom is shocked and alarmed. But she believes you. And she thanks your friend for helping you come forward.

Since your friend’s mom has already been through the process, she helps your mom make a report to law enforcement. Next you have a forensic interview at CAC. An advocate supports your mom for several months, helping her with protection orders, counseling, support groups and more. Your friend is also forensically interviewed as a witness. She provides additional information that strengthens the case.

The abuse stops immediately, as your friend and your mom promised it would, and your family works to help you heal.

CAC often receives referrals of this sort, which are called “accidental disclosures.” This means the 10-year-old child didn’t necessarily tell her friend because she thought the friend would make the abuse stop—she was just sharing with her friend, which is what friends do.

The abuse could potentially still be happening to the 10-year-old if her friend hadn’t been brave enough to disclose her own experience and to encourage the 10-year-old to do the right thing. This friend knew that after she told an adult about her abuse, she was supported and connected to healing services.

The trickle-down effect was one of the silver linings as the abuse stopped for the 10-yearold and she is now safe from her abuser. She is making progress in her healing and the offender is being held accountable because of these two courageous girls.

BRINGING PURPOSE TO PAIN Think back in time to 2009.

You are living a parent’s worst nightmare. Your head hurts, your heart is racing, your stomach is in knots.

You’ve just learned that your five-year-old son was raped by his uncle. And within hours you find out that your eight-year-old son was also sexually abused by the same man.

This was what Mary Beth Holzwarth of Gettysburg, SD, and her children faced. The only thing more unbearable than their ordeal was discovering that child sexual abuse is fairly common.

“After the perpetrator was sentenced, I got a phone call from a lady from Rapid City and she asked how we were able to get justice,” says Mary Beth. “And I just was floored. I had no clue. I really didn't know how prevalent it was. She told me her story and I started researching it and I was just blown away. I couldn’t believe that people weren’t talking about it. This was happening all the time, and literally, no one was doing anything.”

You are horrified and tell your boys, “This isn’t just you. It’s happening to kids all the time.” Your five-year-old looks you in the eye and says, “Well, you have to do something, Mom. You have to make it stop.”

There’s nothing I can do, you think. I’m just a stay-at-home mom. I don’t even have a college degree. But you can’t say that to your son.

Prevention, Training and Education The goal of CHS Prevention, Training and Education is to prevent child abuse in South Dakota.

Statewide education, trainings and events focus on teaching the public and professionals how to recognize and respond to child abuse, properly handle child abuse disclosures, understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and implement trauma informed care.

“My faith is super important to me, and I committed to praying and researching,” says Mary Beth. “And it led us on this crazy mission to share my kids' story, with their blessing, and teach people what I wish I had known about how child sexual abuse works and how to keep your kids safe.”

Mary Beth became involved with the task force that helped pass Jolene’s Law. She connected with the Children’s Home Society’s Prevention program when she attended training in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Mary Beth became one of the first ACEs master trainers. When CHS began Enough Abuse training, she signed up and soon became a trainer in that program, which is specifically focused on preventing child sexual abuse and responding

correctly when a child discloses sexual abuse.

Today, Mary Beth serves on the advisory board of the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment.

She trains groups statewide and shares her family’s experiences.

“In my area of the state, the central part of South Dakota, ACEs and Enough Abuse have been slow to get going. In those rural areas, people sometimes think, ‘None of that stuff happens here. We’re fine.’

But that's another reason I'm glad I’m speaking to groups—people are realizing, ‘Oh, this has happened in a town of 900 people. Maybe we should start listening.’ With a combination of those two trainings, I've seen schools, especially, take a much more trauma-informed approach, and many more protective measures.”

“I'm just very grateful that CHS has taken that initiative to bring ACEs and Enough Abuse to South Dakota,” says Mary Beth. “And I am so grateful, not only for having been selected to be a part of these two training

opportunities, but that CHS is at the forefront, saying, "We're not going to stand for this anymore and South Dakota deserves better.”

Even though your sons are now 17 and 21, you are haunted by the past.

You blame yourself for not knowing your boys were at risk.

Rationally, you realize you couldn’t have known. But you struggle to accept that every single day.

“My kids are the heroes,” she says.

“I'm just the annoying megaphone that won't shut up. Their courage and their willingness to have their stories told is everything. I have watched them step outside of their own pain.

And I watched them just fearlessly defend other people who have had the same experience. It’s helped them heal. Are we 100% okay? Are they 100% healed? Are they ever going to be? No, they're not. This is a life sentence in some ways. But it doesn't have to determine and define who they are.”

“And I think that's why they're doing so well—they know that there's been a bigger purpose for their pain.”

Community Based Services:

Therapeutic Foster Care, Adoption and Family Engagement Services Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) serves children of all ages who have moderate emotional and behavioral needs, usually from abuse or neglect. TFC offers a healing family experience to prepare children for reunification or adoption.

Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) works to find adoptive families for children of all ages who are considered hard to place. WWK believes that no child is unadoptable.

Post Adoption Services include therapy, family support, training and referrals.

Family Engagement Services is a pilot program offering intensive case management and evidence-based interventions and support to children, youth, and families at imminent risk of system involvement.

CONNECTING FOR CHILDREN Tiny and fragile, William was born prematurely, at 26 weeks.

He had been exposed to drugs in utero and spent the first 10 weeks of his life in an intensive care unit.

When William was three months old, he went to live with Tanya, a provider of Therapeutic Foster Care licensed and supported by Children’s Home Society (CHS).

Fortunately, Tanya is a registered nurse and when William went into cardiac arrest, she performed CPR and revived him. She called an ambulance and at the nearby hospital, William went into cardiac arrest two additional times. Eventually he was lifeflighted to a major regional hospital. Tanya packed up her other children and left for the hospital immediately.

William’s birth mom was alerted to his condition, and she also went to the hospital.

Together, she and Tanya supported William— and each other.

“We just bonded,” says Tanya. “We were both there to support William and to be a positive influence on his life. There weren’t any barriers because we both were there just for him.”

“I was able to stay in contact with her,” says Tanya. “I would give her daily updates and FaceTime her with William so she could see him. We created a relationship, and it was nice to have that for William and for us, too.”

Although uncomfortable at first, the connection between Tanya and William’s birth mom promoted healing. “We were able to look at each other's different places in life,” says Tanya. “She is 24 years old and she’s trying hard to stay off drugs, but she just doesn’t have any support.”

Encouraging a relationship between birth families and foster and/or adoptive families is a relatively recent trend.

While it may be difficult for some, many foster families and birth families embrace the relationship. What’s most important is that it’s beneficial for children because it validates their own experiences, keeps them connected to parents, siblings and other relatives, and helps with healing.

“I wish all foster parents could get to know birth parents, if it's safe for the kids,” Tanya says. “It helps the children and it’s helping the mom, too, because she just got her kiddo taken away and she's in pain. I'm sure she's going through a lot. Hopefully it helps motivate her to get into a support group, get a sponsor, get a job. She has to get some stuff figured out. And I think that she will.”

Tanya has compassion for people who struggle with drug and alcohol addiction because a member of her own family had substance abuse issues and ended up committing suicide.

The birth mom has her own trauma, as well. She spent much of her childhood in the foster care system and Tanya learned that she had recently lost a sibling, who William was named after.

Tanya hopes she can be a good influence on William’s birth mom. “I know the main goal is reunification,” Tanya says.

“I pray that she does get on the right path. But no matter what happens, at the end of the day it’s about William.”

Bright Start A nurse home visitation program, Bright Start provides care for at-risk families during pregnancy and after delivery. Nursing services include prenatal, maternal and infant/child health and development assessments and education; and parenting, health, safety and nutrition education. Services may continue until the child’s second birthday. Bright Start also helps link families with community resources, such as prenatal, postpartum and pediatric medical care; family planning services and mental health services.

THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME You are 21 years old, living in a new city, and you’re pregnant and mostly alone. You feel tremendous love for your unborn child. And you want to be the best parent ever.

But it’s difficult. You don’t know what you should do, where to go and how to get help.

That’s where Jurnee was, in 2019, when she met Kristy, a nurse at Bright Start. They began meeting on a regular basis.

“I was able to learn more about pregnancy, how to plan for each stage,” Jurnee says. “She helped me make better decisions and changed how I felt about myself.”

From Kristy, Jurnee learned how to have a healthy pregnancy. Kristy also helped her with housing resources, employment opportunities, Medicaid, food stamps, the Teddy Bear Den, the Furniture Mission, Sharing Christmas and bus passes so she could get to her prenatal appointments.

At 36 weeks, Jurnee gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

She met regularly with Kristy, who helped her navigate the complexities of infant care.

“As a mother, she helped me understand my child and get down to the bottom of things, like rashes,” she says. “Those things helped me know I was on the right track. I feel like that changed my life and my life as a mom.”

When her son was almost a year old, Jurnee’s lease ran out and she had no home. She and her son went to live with her mother in Minnesota. When Jurnee learned that she was pregnant again, she reached out to Kristy. Jurnee was anxious about taking care of two children on her own. Confused and stressed, she and Kristy spent a lot of time talking through her options.

Eventually, she decided to move back to Sioux Falls.

"At that point when I moved, I already had so many resources in Sioux Falls that it felt like home,” Jurnee says. “Kristy was so supportive and she made me feel so much better. And honestly, she was one of the reasons why I wanted to move back.”

You had a stable and consistent family.

Then your world fell apart and you went into foster care. Angry and rebellious, you went from one home, one town and one high school to another and another and another.

You remember how much happier you were with the kind of home life you experienced as a young child.

And that’s what you want for your children.

“What I want for my kids is stability.

To have a stable parent,” Jurnee says.

“To have a home and a consistent job.”

“I want to raise them to have good lives.

I want to have my life together, and I want them to see that and possibly be inspired by me, or to be able to look up to a parent that is doing well and trying hard.”

After Jurnee moved back to Sioux Falls, Kristy, Jurnee and baby girl Kristy helped her achieve that stability. Jurnee got a job, found good child care, and enjoyed seeing her son thriving physically and developmentally. She gave birth to a healthy little girl and began successfully co-parenting with the father of her children.

“I'm just so impressed with Jurnee,” says Kristy. “She's a strong person. It’s so evident how much love she has for her kids.”

“Kristy is not just my nurse,” Jurnee says. “She's my friend. I've been able to go to her for so many different things and she's always been supportive. And when she's here, we don't just talk about the nursing stuff, we talk about, ‘how's the day,’ ‘how's this been?’”

YOU DESERVE LOVE You are in a loving relationship with Ethan. You live together and have a child, who is your world. Slowly—you can’t even put a finger on when it happens—you see that Ethan has a hard edge. At first it seems like love. He always wants to know where you are going and what you are doing. You adjust because you’re young, you’ve heard that relationships take work, and you love him.

Over time, it almost seems like Ethan has become two different people—one rational and caring, the other crazy and mean. You cannot predict when he will get angry because it seems random. He blames you for things that aren’t your fault. Makes demands and becomes irate when you don’t or can’t comply. Threatens to hurt you if you don’t obey him.

He also confirms your greatest fears— that you are unattractive, unlovable and unworthy. Your self-confidence sinks and you believe what he tells you, that you could never make it on your own.

Like many people experiencing domestic violence, Brianna tried and tried to make the relationship work— until Ethan crossed a line.

“The day that I decided to leave my abuser was when he was strangling me in front of our son,” Brianna says. “He

was only two and he was saying things like, ‘No, Daddy! Daddy, stop!’ And then Ethan pushed him down.”

“That was my snap of reality because I had tried to leave multiple times before. But as soon as he put my child in danger—that was the line he crossed. I knew that if my son saw me going through that, he would think it was okay to hurt others or get hurt himself.”

As soon as Ethan left for work, Brianna called her mom, who told her to go to Children’s Inn.

“When I first came to Children’s Inn, I was a mess. I just sat at the dinner table and cried in my food. It felt like it was the end of the world.”

“But everyone accepted my mess,” says Brianna. “And they offered unconditional support: you're still beautiful. You're still worthy of love. And I started crying because I just felt so accepted and loved. There was no, ‘Oh you're bad’ or, ‘You don't matter.’ Well, you do matter.

And your child matters.”

“They were really kind,” she says. “Really sweet, helpful, non-judgmental people.

I found a lot of hope and support for the future. They got me into counseling.

They advocated for me in court. They helped me with my child. And they helped me get into the place that we're living in right now.”

Brianna tried co-parenting with Ethan, but it didn’t work because he continued to be abusive. Eventually they worked

And Brianna has worked hard to become the parent her child needs and deserves.

“She is very hands-on with her son,” says Children’s Inn Mental Health Therapist Jody Bockorny. “She is gentle—she acknowledges his feelings and she gets down at his level, eye-to-eye, and explains why Mommy doesn't want you to do this or why this isn't good for you at this time. And she’s just very proactive, learning about early childhood education, attending to any medical needs.”

Recently, people have noticed that you now have a warm and protective presence. You are told that you radiate calm and confidence. For the first time in years, you feel at peace.

And now that you can take better care of your son, and keep him in a safe environment, it feels like you love him more, if that’s even possible. And what’s even more amazing to you is that you have come to love yourself.

“I've known Brianna since she first came to Children’s Inn,” says Jody. “It's been an honor and a privilege to be a part of her journey. To see her progress, success and accomplishments—and to watch her be a confident, independent woman and a wonderful mom.

She can do anything she puts her mind to.”

Brianna continues to be thankful for Children’s Inn. “I just bring the story back around to Children's Inn because that's where it really started. That's where I got my confidence back. That's where I got the empowerment back,” she says.

“And if I hear someone talking about abuse or someone they know who has been or is being abused, I always tell them about Children’s Inn. Even if you don’t stay there, please get connected with them.”

“They have resources,” Brianna says. “They have help. They have kind hearts.”

COVID-19 continued to wreak havoc worldwide.

At Children’s Home Society (CHS), we are proud and grateful that the pandemic did not disrupt or affect the care and services we provide. We made various accommodations, such as offering trainings on Zoom and replacing in-person fundraising with virtual events. But overall, the story you’ll see in the names and numbers here is one of generosity, hope and confidence.

To that end, CHF raises financial and gift-in-kind resources for operating support and facility needs, and works to establish long-term sustainability through endowment funds and estate gifts.

Since the early 1900s, caring friends have helped CHS during challenging economic times by providing bequests from their estates. Today, donors use a wide variety of gift vehicles, including:

• Bequests through wills and trusts • Lead Trusts and Charitable Remainder Estates • Making CHS the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan Legacy gifts are used to grow the endowment from which a board-designated percentage is distributed annually to help fund CHS programs and services. Specific designations can also be made to programs of CHS, such as Children’s Inn.

Throughout each year, I am very grateful for the opportunities to share information about Children’s Home Society (CHS). As our programs and services have grown and evolved, it takes some time to touch on everything we do.

At our core, we continue to focus on the reason CHS started in 1893—to ensure the safety and well-being of children. Through the merger with Children’s Inn in 1998 our mission expanded to include the safety of adults. Today our programs focus on preventing both child abuse and neglect, and domestic violence—and helping people heal from trauma. We also serve children who are not in those situations, but have emotional, behavioral or mental health issues and need our specialized care and programs.

I hope the stories and information in this publication help you better understand how your gifts are used and how they make a difference in the lives of the people we serve. Children’s Inn Breaks Ground for New Facility in 2021

On May 4, 2021, Children’s Inn broke ground on a new facility at 113 N. St. Paul Avenue in Sioux Falls.

The new 48,000-square-foot building was designed

by Koch Hazard Architects and is being built by Lloyd Companies. It will increase Children’s Inn’s capacity from 40 beds in 24 bedrooms to 96 beds in 38 bedrooms, and include enhanced dining facilities, larger family rooms, more indoor and outdoor play space and additional areas for drop-in crisis visits, case management and support services. The building is scheduled for completion in October 2022.

As the only domestic violence shelter in the area, Children’s Inn serves a population of more than 329,000 in Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, Union and McCook counties.

“For the past six years, we have been operating at or above our capacity of 40 individuals the majority of the time,” said Children’s Inn Program Director, Amy Carter.

“As the area’s population increases, so has the need for safe shelter for victims of domestic violence and child abuse and neglect,” she said. “Children’s Inn is the only option for these individuals.”

GIFT FOR GOOD CAMPAIGN LAUNCH Children’s Inn launched the Gift for Good fundraising campaign in June 2021, for the new building, construction and endowment to ensure long-term sustainability.

A generous contribution of $11 million from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford is the lead gift, with $5.5 million going toward building construction and $5.5 million to the Children’s Inn endowment.

The goal of the campaign is to raise an additional $6 million to complete the facility construction as well as an additional $6 million for the endowment for ongoing operations.

At Children’s Home Society (CHS) in Sioux Falls, Valentine’s Day has gone to the dogs!

At Shop Dog Boutique, customers and their dogs helped make valentines for children at CHS. Visitors brought their dogs into the store, where instant photos were snapped. Customers attached these to valentines provided by Shop Dog and the cards were sent to children at CHS. The store also sold Valentine’s Day Bundles, consisting of special treats and a doggy-bandana, with all proceeds going to CHS. Thanks to Shop Dog Boutique and its customers for all the love—
