WHO IS CHS? We are 348 employees, along with numerous volunteers, donors and board members in Sioux Falls and the Black Hills.

We are accountants, administrators, advocates, case managers, cooks, coordinators, counselors, directors, forensic interviewers, fundraisers, housekeepers, HR specialists, maintenance workers, marketers, nurses, secretaries, social workers, teachers, therapists, technicians and more.

We are diverse in ability, age, education, experience, race, gender and talent.

We are kind, tenacious, passionate, professional and mission driven.

Tenacity is truly my favorite core value and I think you will see, through these stories in our annual program report, just how important tenacity is at Children’s Home Society (CHS). For the children and families we serve, it takes tenacity to overcome trauma.

For our team members, it takes tenacity to do everything we can to help our clients through some of life’s biggest challenges.

As the state’s oldest nonprofit human services organization, founded in 1893, just four years after South Dakota became a state, we have evolved to meet the changing needs of the people we serve. Today:

It completes our series of three annual program reports centered around our values (including We are Better Together in 2021 and We Choose Kindness in 2022).

It is through these values, embraced and practiced by leadership and staff, that CHS has overcome daunting challenges and achieved audacious goals during the past few years.

Tenacity is the driving force behind: Building the new, 48,000-square-foot Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety (formerly Children’s Inn). See page 29 to learn more about the project.

Receiving increased Medicaid funding. See page 17 for details.

Decreasing front-line staff turnover from 70% to 23% at the end of the 2022 fiscal year. CHS used multiple approaches to solve this issue, including surveys, a commitment to transparency, a formal leadership training program (CHS University), increased wages, new benefits and expanded marketing.

Because of this workforce transformation, CHS received a national award in April, 2023, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Children’s Bureau—the only agency in South Dakota to do so.

Finally, at CHS we don’t just practice tenacity. We preach, teach and model it for the people we serve. And they, in turn, show us the transformative power of tenacity in their own lives.

As we celebrate 130 years, I am prompted to think about William and Elizabeth Sherrard and how their love for children started something so powerful, and how they gave of their hearts and souls to care for them.

Through determination, persistence and tenacity, they provided hope, shelter, safety and love.

Our tenacity has kept that dream alive. With staff, volunteers, Board Members and donors, tenacity has enabled us to provide the best programs to prevent, heal and treat trauma.

As CHS Board President, I have experienced a powerful, impactful and often overlooked key to our success: the tenacity of our staff. Put simply, tenacity is that fierce blend of determination, persistence, patience, creativity and grit.

Tenacity is a key trait of our people that lifts CHS from good to great.

Tenacity is important because not everything we need to do at CHS is easy or simple. Our staff members face constant obstacles, setbacks and challenges with the people we choose to serve.

As human beings, we cling to what we love, whether that’s a memory, a friend, or a place where we find peace. The same is true with our staff. Their love– their calling, if you will—is to be indispensable to those we serve.

When the going gets tough, messy or seems unsolvable, most people walk away from the work. Not so at CHS. I’m honored to witness the tenacity of our people driving our success.

Residential Treatment and Education Black Hills Children’s Home (BHCH) and Sioux Falls Children’s Home (SFCH) are psychiatric residential treatment facilities and special education schools for children ages 4-14. We partner with parents and caregivers to serve children with emotional, behavioral or mental health needs who may have experienced domestic violence, neglect, and emotional, physical or sexual abuse.

ZOE LEARNS BRAIN SCIENCE Eleven-year-old Zoe was admitted for residential treatment at SFCH several years ago. Her background included “significant and severe” physical abuse and neglect, serving as a caretaker for her younger siblings and a pattern of emotional shutdown.

Understanding how our brains work can be a tool for healing and behavioral change, explains Director of Residential Treatment Ondrea Patzlaff.

“Applied educational neuroscience is a new formalized approach for something that’s been going on for many years at Children’s Home,” says CHS’s Loving School Teacher Jordan Hofer. “It’s an approach that is brain-focused and rooted in scientific research.”

Instead of simply telling a child to stop behaving in a certain way, staff consider why that behavior is happening, what’s going on in the child’s brain and what needs it’s fulfilling in the child. The idea is to help both staff members and children understand behavior in terms of trauma and the brain.

“It’s a trauma-informed approach,” Jordan says. “We help children think about how their brains work, and it helps them understand themselves better.”

“For example, a behavior in the classroom may not make sense. But in the environment the student came from, it might have made a lot of sense. Aggression, violence, not trusting adults—these may not be appropriate, but they are survival skills that kids might need to keep themselves safe in certain environments,” he says.

If a child is cognitively advanced, he or she might learn about brain chemistry’s role in a diagnosis, such as the effects of serotonin on depression. Younger children might be guided to learn that sometimes our brains don’t work the way they’re supposed to, and the wires get mixed up.

One of the foundations of this approach is that staff, too, consider their own brains. Teachers and residential staff must understand their own triggers or barriers to self-regulation, or they are unable to effectively help children.

“The way I look at it, the learning we’re doing about the brain is, one, to help the students understand their own brains— what’s going on and how they can understand themselves better to make improvements,” says Jordan. “And two, I’m learning about how the brain works in students with trauma, so that I can design my classroom environment as effectively as possible to help them.”

After several years at CHS, Zoe went into foster care, where she has been successful. CHS staff handled the transition and prepared the foster family with information on patterns, behaviors and, again, brain science! In this case, a child of the same age in the family had a cell phone, but Zoe couldn’t handle having one. The foster parents learned that it’s the brain of the child, not the age of the child, that determines readiness and maturity.

Loving School’s staff expertise, specialized resources and low student-to-staff ratio help children learn self-regulation in the classroom.

Self-awareness for students and staff At CHS, Zoe’s classroom teacher and residential treatment therapist worked as a team to help Zoe grow in both settings.

According to Ondrea and Jordan, Zoe would present herself as kind, responsible and friendly 80 to 90% of the time. But when she was triggered, she would go into a very different state, becoming angry and aggressive—and making comments about self-harm and suicide.

“Learning about the brain can help kids understand how their own pasts, their own trauma, their own abuse and their own experiences affect their responses to situations,” says Ondrea.

“We try to help them recognize, ‘I might be responding from a survival mode in my brain, or I might be responding from an emotional response in my brain.’”

ACEs TRAINING PROVIDES ANOTHER TOOL FOR TRIBAL COMMUNITY HEALING What if scientists discovered that human experience is stored not just in our minds, but also in our bodies?

The role of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—traumatic events or situations during childhood—in health, behavioral and social problems is well established. ACEs are linked to national public health crises, such as heart disease, diabetes and depression. And researchers are, at this very moment, seeking to use this knowledge to profoundly change the future of the public’s health.

In 2022, CHS helped bring ACEs training to Native communities across South Dakota, where ACEs concepts are being incorporated into culturally-based mental health services—bringing another tool to the table for healing and growth.

In 2018, the CHS Prevention program partnered with the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment (CPCM) to bring ACEs training to South Dakota. Created by renowned psychologist Dr. Robert Anda and Laura Porter, the ACEs training they provide is for Master Trainers, who can then train Presenters in their communities.

To date CHS has taken the lead on training more than 200 ACEs Presenters, and the number continues to climb.

In collaboration with trained ACEs Master Trainers and Presenters, more than 22,028 adults and youth have received education in a shared language around understanding the impact of trauma.

Project Aware The first Indigenous Master Cohort training in South Dakota was held in April for Project Aware. Located in the Oglala Lakota community of Kyle, SD, on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Project Aware is part of the Culturally Informed, TraumaInformed Schools program.

On Pine Ridge, youth suicide is a true crisis. While suicide is the leading cause

of death in South Dakota for 10-to-29-year-olds, suicide rates among the state’s Native people is 2.6 times higher than for whites.

In addition to other programs, Project Aware has created an on-call emergency mental health system to respond to students who may be suicidal. Parents, relatives, friends, teachers and students are assured of an immediate response, referrals and resources.

Director Edwina Brown Bull sought ACEs training for Project Aware staff for years.

“Part of the sustainability of Project Aware was to get as many Master Trainers in our partner schools as possible, so that we can design the services that we need for our students, the training we need for our staff and, after the grant funding is over, we will have that resource at those schools.”

Prevention, Training and Education The goal of CHS Prevention, Training and Education is to prevent child abuse in South Dakota.

Statewide education, trainings and events focus on teaching the public and professionals how to recognize and respond to child abuse, properly handle child abuse disclosures, understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and implement trauma-informed care.

Understanding ACEs is just part of the healing process for Project Aware.

Culture and nature are Tribal pathways to healing from ACEs and shape the bulk of the program’s work.

November 2022 training Later in the year, through a partnership with the state’s Department of Social Services Behavioral Health Division, and a newly formed Tribal Advisory Group, a second Indigenous Master Trainer cohort event was held. Individuals from seven Tribal Nations in SD participated, spending four days in conversation with Dr. Anda and Porter.

Pauletta Red Willow, Founder and Director of Maggie’s House, also in Kyle, attended the fall training. Maggie’s House is a residential transitional living program for 17-to-22-year-olds who are exiting foster care, homeless or trafficked.

“In the Tribal Advisory Group, we discussed how the ACEs material needs to be presented with cultural experience and knowledge,” says Pauletta.

Tribal people may have multiple layers of trauma, including historical trauma and boarding school trauma, that are passed down from one generation to the next. ACEs are a tool for understanding these impacts, but must be placed in the right context.

“Say you score a seven on the ACEs test,” says Pauletta. “One of the Tribal Advisory Group members said, ‘If I had known this

when I was younger, would I have turned out the same? Would I have set myself up for defeat?’ It’s an indication that things out of your control are going to make your life even harder. What does someone do with that information?”

The training was an important step towards a model for using ACEs in Indigenous communities throughout South Dakota and beyond. “It was a good learning opportunity,” says Pauletta. “We had a great group of individuals to review the materials and discuss what we were experiencing in our own communities.”

Community Based Services

Therapeutic Foster Care, Adoption and Family Engagement Services Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) serves children of all ages who have moderate emotional and behavioral needs, usually from abuse or neglect. TFC offers a healing family experience to prepare children for reunification or adoption.

Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) works to find adoptive families for children of all ages who are considered hard to place. WWK believes that no child is unadoptable.

Post Adoption Services include therapy, family support, training and referrals.

Family Engagement Services (FES) is a pilot program offering intensive case management and evidence-based interventions and support to children, youth, and families at imminent risk of system involvement.

THE TRIUMPH OF TENACITY Family Engagement Services is one of the newest preventionfocused programs at CHS. We provide in-home case management to families at risk for involvement in the child welfare, juvenile justice or criminal justice systems.

Part of our philosophy is empowering families to identify and build upon their strengths and to develop healthy relationships, parenting skills and family stability.

Katie was one of those children who had a history of slipping through the cracks.

Fortunately, that ended when CHS’s Sarah Crawford, Family Engagement Specialist was assigned to work with Katie’s family through the FES program in Rapid City.

“When I first went into the home, Katie wasn’t necessarily receptive to me,” says Sarah. “The first thing she said to me was, ‘You’re just a social worker, bitch.’ But within six months she was referring to me as her BFF. That’s a story that Katie and I laugh about.”

Sarah soon found that Katie’s mother needed support and help with parenting skills to manage some of the problematic behaviors that Katie showed.

“The first visit was very interesting and ended up with law enforcement being called,” Sarah explains. “I walk into this home not knowing them at all. They don’t know who I am. And things just escalated to where Katie and Mom

were fighting each other. Katie can get very aggressive. When Katie reached out and hit her mom, Mom knew to call law enforcement right away.”

Katie, age 13, had been referred to FES by the juvenile diversion program. “She was having significant self-harm and suicidal ideation, so I had concerns about her being safe in the home environment,” says Sarah. Her advocacy helped Katie receive residential treatment while she continued to work with Katie’s mom.

When Katie returned home and transitioned back into the public school system, now in high school, she struggled. She refused to attend school and fought with her mother. Although the team considered whether Katie should return to a psychiatric residential treatment facility, they decided to maintain her status at home and continue to provide community based services. Next, Sarah turned to the school district to advocate for Katie and helped her get into a placement that better met her needs.

“That increased her attendance,” says Sarah. “Her mental health improved dramatically. She took pride in the fact that she hadn’t self-harmed in five months, which was really wonderful for her.”

The family “graduated” from the program when Sarah had done everything she could to help them develop the skills they needed. “It’s a great feeling. I think the best part of it is that connection and relationship that I’ve built with the family and knowing that they trust me,” says Sarah.

“It was bittersweet when I discharged them from the program. Katie’s response was, ‘No, Sarah, you can’t leave me. Sarah, you’re divorcing me.’ I said, ‘I’m not going anywhere. I will still be here.’”

“And I do remember a couple months in, Mom saying stuff like, ‘This isn’t going to work, Sarah. Nothing’s ever going to work.’ And I just looked at her and I said, ‘You know what?

I will walk beside you until she turns 18 if that’s what it takes.’

But after about a year, she was saying things like, ‘Sarah’s the only one who has not given up on us and walked away from us.’”

Since Sarah started working with Katie, the FES program has brought on two additional employees, effectively tripling our capacity. And in 2022, Sarah received the CHS Rising Star of the Year Award for her pioneering and tenacious work in the program.

Bright Start A nurse home visitation program, Bright Start provides care for at-risk families during pregnancy and after delivery. Nursing services include prenatal, maternal and infant/child health and development assessments and education; and parenting, health, safety and nutrition education. Services may continue until the child’s second birthday. Bright Start also helps link families with community resources, such as prenatal, postpartum and pediatric medical care; family planning services and mental health services.

FROM BRIGHT START TO SHINING LIGHT Fourteen years ago, Amanda Tilberg was a pregnant single mother. She became a client of Bright Start, a nurse home visitation program for first-time moms. Amanda and her baby thrived in the program.

“It was so important to have someone who never made me feel ashamed for having a bad day, who was always reminding me of my potential as a mom and that I wasn’t alone,” Amanda says.

“Just knowing that someone believed in me and my abilities.”

The nurse made a strong impression on Amanda at a critical moment in her life. “At the time, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life. Through working with her, I thought, ‘I think I want to be a nurse—and then I someday want to be a nurse in the Bright Start program.’”

Amanda started attending college, earned her associate’s degree and then her bachelor’s. Eventually she returned to school and earned a master’s degree.

She worked in a wide variety of roles in hospitals and clinics, becoming a nurse practitioner in women’s health. By chance, she learned of a rare opening for a Bright Start nurse and joined the team in April 2022.

“I didn’t know if it was going to happen or not, but by the grace of God, here I am,” Amanda says.

“So I feel very, very, very lucky, very fortunate.”

“I felt like it was meant to be. I love what I do. I value the people that I get to work with, and they make me better, too. Every day I wake up and I’m excited to do my job. I can’t imagine doing anything else. It’s the most rewarding thing that I’ve ever done.”

I will forever be grateful for what Amanda has done for me. I look forward to the next two years I have with her to help me learn and be the best mother I can be.”

Child Advocacy Center The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) serves children who are alleged victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse or who have witnessed violence. Like more than 900 other CACs nationwide, the Children’s Home CAC provides forensic interviews, support to families and coordinates specialized medical examinations.

These services eliminate the need for repeated interviews and examinations by multiple investigating parties. Referrals come primarily through law enforcement and Child Protection Services.

THE MOM, THE ADVOCATE AND THE POWER OF LOVE Several years ago, a case came to CAC through Internet Crimes Against Children from a tip about child pornography.

A short time later we learned that the individual was sexually abusing his daughters, who were three and four at the time.

It is exceedingly rare for a CAC client to tell their story publicly. The mother of these girls, Casey, came forward to share her story with Child and Family Advocate Jennifer Arnold on video. Jennifer: Going through this process is oftentimes kind of like the grief process. And sometimes, like you said, you didn’t really have a grasp of what was going on, probably because you were in shock. Talk a little bit about where you saw yourself in that process, in the beginning.

Casey: In the beginning, I had so much running through my head. How could I be a mom of three kids all by myself?

How was I going to get through this? How can I try to think more clearly for them?

Because what had happened was very shocking to me, like you said. I mean, my whole world blew up. I felt loss and betrayal, mostly because I gave him children. I gave him the best gift you could give somebody, and he just ruined it.

And I just felt completely alone, because this kind of thing only happens, you think, in movies. You don’t think it would ever happen to you or your kids.

Jennifer: Offenders often use manipulation and not only groom and manipulate children, but also their caregivers and that’s frequently moms. Can you tell me a little bit about how that looked for you and how he manipulated you into thinking that he was someone different?

Casey: He painted himself as this great father and someone who treated me like a princess, a queen…gave me gifts and stuff like that. He did treat me bad sometimes in front of the children, but he also would buy me things without me even asking or go shopping with the kids and let me sleep in, come home with this big breakfast and bouquet of flowers. He would give me money just to go shopping, go get some clothes. And when I had a long day with the kids or I didn’t feel good, he would bathe the kids.

He would wake up early with the kids, so I could sleep in.

He’d make sure that I was happy.

Jennifer: I think sometimes for caregivers, it’s not that they don’t believe what happened, it’s just that they can’t believe it right then. It’s just too overwhelming.

Casey: And it really was. I think I was just so overcome with sadness and betrayal, and I felt lied to, and I couldn’t process that this really happened. I mean, I heard it happened, and I heard people say it happened. I even heard him say that it happened, and I still, I couldn’t even picture that it could have ever happened because of how well he acted as being a father, how caring he was to the children.

Jennifer: Oftentimes when moms come to the Child Advocacy Center, because their child has had some type of victimization, their own trauma is triggered and comes up, and they may not have thought about it for a while or for years. And so not only are they having to support their children and be there for their children, but they’re having to relive their own trauma. Can you talk a little bit about how that played into your journey and your journey with your children throughout this process?

Casey: When I was about 12, I think, my mom remarried, and I never really liked the guy. And it’s not that he wasn’t good to us, but he always gave me weird feelings. My friends were telling me that he was messaging them on Facebook, sexual things, and I would go to my mom, and she never believed me. But he did end up touching my little sister inappropriately. She also told my mom, who didn’t quite believe her either.

The only time that she decided to believe us was when he got caught with child pornography on his work phone. And he was a police officer. He was sentenced about a week before my children’s’ father was, to 25 years. And I think continued on pg. 16 >

Casey: Well, when I first came here, I had no clue who you were, but I think when I walked through the door, you gave me a hug. You took us back to a little room, and you just talked to me like normal. I think it really helped me relax. And you kept in contact with me, and I told my mom, “She’s my guardian angel.”

I remember coming to my house and seeing a box.

And there was a coat in there, and I needed a coat.

I was like, “Man, she didn’t have to do this.” I felt like you really understood what was happening. And you were there for me to talk to and to confide in about things that I was having trouble with and not just things about the kids. And you didn’t shut me out because of the mistakes I made during this whole ordeal.

growing up like that kind of affected things negatively for me on how to be able to recognize those types of things, especially when it’s someone so close to you and you’re so trusting.

You think that what’s important to you is also going to be super important to them, as well. And you’re hoping that he will protect his children just like you would protect your children. And I guess I got too caught up in the fact that this is their father, and he wouldn’t do that to them because who would, I mean, what parent would do that?

I wanted so bad for the kids to have a good dad because I never got one, and I never was close to my birth father or my stepfather.

And I just was so hopeful that they had a good dad that I just couldn’t see any bad in him.

Jennifer: Can you talk about what our relationship has been like through this process? And what role has that played for you as time has passed?

Jennifer: What would you like to tell someone that’s just starting out in this process of hearing a disclosure, learning this information about what maybe their children have gone through? What would you like to share with them?

Casey: I guess that it’s normal to feel confused and shocked and hurt…And it’s normal to almost feel nothing at all because you’re so shocked that you can’t even cry. But even though it’s hard in the beginning, as time goes by, the pieces just kind of start coming back together. And as it comes back together, you’ll get stronger and you’ll feel happier. And the more you reach out and the more connections you have, and support and family and love, it can get better faster.

Jennifer: Well, I’ve been doing this for a very, very long time, and you are a mom that I will never forget. You’ve been a gift to work with and to guide, and you’ve really changed my life, too.

Casey: You changed mine because out of all this crummy stuff that I’ve been through, you’ve always been one of the best parts. You have just been this, I guess, beacon of light in all of this and just really helped me get through it even when I didn’t think I could.

Jennifer: I’m sorry that our paths crossed because of this situation, but with everything that you have done and the growth that you’ve shown, your children are going to be okay. There’s so much hope, and you’re going to just be a gift for the world because of what you’ve endured. I guess the joy and sorrow of this situation is your perseverance and your tenacity. And so, thank you.

At CAC, approximately 5% of our cases move forward to prosecution.

Nationally that number is 3 to 5%. The children’s offender was sentenced to 65 years early in 2022.

Our Chief Financial Officer, Joe Herdina, led the charge to increase Medicaid rebasing—first through strong financial analysis to show our shortfall and second by spending the legislative session in Pierre—telling our story and testifying at Appropriations.

Through Joe’s tenacity, residential treatment will be funded at breakeven, allowing us to cover the actual cost of care for the first time ever.

Joe retired at the end of March.

We will miss seeing Joe every day, but his tenacity in ensuring CHS is rebased appropriately will be felt for many years to come.

130 Years and Going Strong Children’s Home Society was founded as an orphanage in 1893 by Elizabeth and William Sherrard. Elizabeth looked after the children while William traveled around fundraising and retrieving orphans; he was an enthusiastic champion for abused, neglected and abandoned children.

Within the first two years, they had taken in 400 children, and they needed a larger space. Beginning in 1899, penitentiary inmates cut the pink quartzite blocks for the new orphanage.

The four-acre building site on a hill overlooking the city of Sioux Falls cost $1,518; construction of the 33-room building designed by William Dow was $25,000.

In 1902, the Sherrards, their staff and 20 children moved into the new orphanage. Furniture and supplies were donated by organizations, churches and individuals.

CHS remained at this location until 1968.

On October 14, 2022, CHS and the Minnehaha County Historical Society dedicated an historical marker at 10th and Cliff, where the orphanage stood.

Funding for the marker was given to honor longtime CHS supporters, Loren and Mavis Amundson, by their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Amundson family has supported the orphanage for many years, and their generosity continues today.

Behind the numbers… *There are 10 types of ACEs in three categories: abuse, neglect and household dysfunction. The more ACEs a child has, the higher the risk of developing illnesses such as heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression and cancer.

CHS impacts nearly 16,000 vulnerable children and families annually from every county in South Dakota. We serve children of all ages throughout our six programs.

As we reflect on and celebrate our 130-year anniversary, gratitude and perspective come to the forefront. In 1898, just five years after our founding, William Sherrard reported to the Board of Directors that the organization had cash on hand in the amount of $1.02. Today, because of your generous hearts, philanthropy is thriving at Children’s Home Society!

The work continues, however.

Philanthropy and the generous support of our donors and volunteers continues to be a vital necessity for us to carry out our mission. We are so thankful for each one of you and your tenacious spirit of generosity.

Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety (formerly Children’s Inn) provides free services for women, children and men who are victims of domestic violence, stalking, elder abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse or neglect.

SAME HEART. NEW HOME. Trauma-Informed Care for Victims of Domestic Violence Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety, formerly Children’s Inn, held a ribbon cutting event on October 13, 2022 at its new building, designed by Koch Hazard Architects and built by Lloyd Companies.

The 48,000-square-foot building doubled the capacity of the previous shelter with 96 beds and 38 bedrooms. Move-in date was November 15.

“Our name and location have changed,” says Program Director Amy Carter. “But our staff, our services and our commitment to the people we serve is the same.”

The new facility was built to alleviate overcrowding at the previous location, which had been a problem since 2016.

“We wish that this shelter was not needed. Unfortunately, that is not the reality,” says Amy. “In fact, each year we have more than 1,100 intakes. These are women who sacrifice themselves to protect their children. These are people you might know from your church or school. These are families who have lived in fear but can now find peace. This new shelter provides us with what we need to, in turn, give victims of abuse the services and support they deserve.”

Every feature of the new shelter supports our clients on their journey of hope and healing: The homelike setting is warm and welcoming; guests can enjoy privacy or opportunities to socialize, as they choose Enhanced kitchen and dining areas and larger family rooms have greater capacity More indoor and outdoor play spaces, including a climbing wall, provide additional resources to help children heal Dedicated administrative areas for drop-in crisis visits, case management and support services Abundant natural light and outdoor spaces lift spirits A hand-built fieldstone wall, made of donated, locally sourced stones, guides visitors to the entrance Safety is ensured with state-of-the-art equipment Artwork throughout the building promotes peace, wonder and healing The Lotus Boutique provides shelter guests with clothing, shoes and jewelry donated by community partners A mini-call center allows clients to work remotely for Five Star Call Center and transition to working at home when they depart shelter

If one in three women and one in four men in South Dakota experience domestic violence during their lifetimes, we don’t have to look far to find victims. Some can see it in their friends and family members; others need only look within.

“There’s still a lot of shame around domestic violence,” says Amy. “Victims may believe they ‘deserve it’ or that ‘it’s not that bad.’

We encourage people to call our crisis line even if they’re not sure it’s abuse. Talking to someone can really help.”

The population of the Sioux Falls area continues to grow quickly.

People from smaller South Dakota towns and other areas of the country flock here for jobs, good schools and our excellent quality of life. Domestic abuse can occur in any family, so as the number of residents rise, the number of shelter guests also increases.

“The thing that is unique in our philanthropy is that we can give art. Not everybody can do that.

Instead of writing a check, we say, ‘We’d like to provide a program of art for your facility.’ That does a couple of things. One, it provides the art that they may not have been able to have. And it then provides a special place for the healing process. That’s thrilling for us, that we’re able to do that.”

THE ART OF GIVING What makes a house into a home?

For many, artwork is essential.

It can be anything from a child’s drawing on the fridge to an original painting.

What’s important is that it’s personally meaningful.

As CHS and Koch Hazard Architects planned the new Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety, we worked to make it feel to guests like a home, rather than an institution.

And the extraordinary donation of art from fine art nature photographer Paul Schiller, and his wife and business partner, Koni, helped us succeed more than we dreamed possible.

The Schillers became involved after touring the previous Children’s Inn facility on Western Avenue, where they saw a young woman in 34

distress arrive at the shelter.

They were moved to donate photographs for the new facility.

The Schillers could have given a few photos—but instead they donated 32 pieces of art plus framing ($70,000 total). Many are colorful macro shots of the natural world, while others feature panoramic views of iconic South Dakota landmarks.

Koni Schiller, who is a retired cardiac nurse, understands the power of art to change lives.

“It gives them a pathway to escape the pain and find some happiness,” she says.

“When people are going through a traumatic part of their lives, if they can find something to grab hold of that’s positive, it allows them to picture a better life,” adds Paul.

The Schillers’ gift helped inspire other artists to contribute and other donors to fund more artwork. The results shine on nearly every wall within the 48,000-squarefoot facility, infusing rooms and hallways with beauty, warmth and wonder.

“It’s an art gallery,” says Koni.

“It literally is a story to be told, giving people pride in where they’re at right now. And it just adds to their healing process.”

“It’s one of the finer art collections in Sioux Falls, and for all the right reasons. And that’s what I feel very good about,” says Paul.

RUSHMORE ROTARY ROCKS! In 1986, the Rotary Club of Rapid City Rushmore was founded as an offshoot of the Rapid City Rotary Club. Members of the new club joined the other 1.4 million members of Rotary International in some 46,000 local clubs. For 35 years, Rotarians have been working globally to eradicate polio. Other focuses include promoting peace, supporting education, saving mothers and children, and more.

“Each club has its signature project,” says Rotary Club of Rapid City Rushmore President Lt. Col. Retired Jennifer Rollins. “And Children’s Home Society (CHS) is definitely our signature project.”

In 1989, the club made its first pledge to CHS, a $20,000 gift designated for the Black Hills Children’s Home flagship building. By 2022, the Rotary Club of Rapid City Rushmore had given a total of $2,014,841 to CHS!

“We are a very active club,” says Jennifer. “With just 74 members, we have 23 committees!” In addition to helping CHS, the club works with Feeding South Dakota, highway cleanup, youth outreach, sending funds to Ukraine and Turkey, and supporting a school in Tanzania. A group within the club called Rotary Community Core RCC is focusing on developing partnerships with Native American organizations. And within the 40-club Rotary district that includes all of South Dakota, several projects are addressing human trafficking in the area.

The club hosts two events annually that benefit CHS: the Gala event every March and the Rotary Golf Tournament each July.

With a motto of “service before self,” this small but mighty Rotary club has touched the lives and hearts of many children and families we serve.

At Children’s Home Society (CHS) in Sioux Falls, Valentine’s Day has gone to the dogs!

At Shop Dog Boutique, customers and their dogs helped make valentines for children at CHS. Visitors brought their dogs into the store, where instant photos were snapped. Customers attached these to valentines provided by Shop Dog and the cards were sent to children at CHS. The store also sold Valentine’s Day Bundles, consisting of special treats and a doggy-bandana, with all proceeds going to CHS. Thanks to Shop Dog Boutique and its customers for all the love—
